New Film Series announced January 2022 5
About Jack Simmerling Jack Simmerling answered his calling as an artist at a very young age. Just in his early teens, he began to sketch and paint historic buildings. He was especially interested in those of Chicago’s Prairie District, many of which were set to be demolished. His passion extended to building small scale models of these same buildings, some of which are now on display in the Glassner Museum. Thus began Jack’s life-long dedication to art and presentation. As the community learned of his skills, Jack began to receive requests by local residents to sketch their homes. Local banks and businesses also asked Jack for the work of his pencil and brush. His crisp sketches and clean watercolors were hung in bank lobbies and business offices. They were sent on Christmas cards. Some of his first commercial sketches were locations around the Beverly/Morgan Park area, many of which are framed in houses throughout Beverly to this day. Those who flee Chicago winters bring Beverly with them when they leave. Jack received his degree in Fine Arts from the University of Notre Dame. He studied art history at the University of Chicago. In 1958, Jack opened a small art gallery on 111th street, near the train station. He offered his paintings, sketches, and art supplies in the front of the
gallery and picture framing in the back. On Saturday mornings, he would teach painting classes in the back room. His students speak of those memories with nostalgia and pride. Neighborhood residents flocked to his humble storefront, not only to enjoy the artwork, but to converse with Jack, whose stories of Chicago and its cultural richness were abundant. Jack’s welcoming and sunny personality would keep patrons coming back to the place they knew not only as a business but as a social destination. Community member would consider his shop, The Heritage Gallery, the place to find gifts for anyone from graduates of local schools to retiring professionals. As Jack’s professional reputation grew, so did the demand for his work. From across the Chicago area, businesses and residents commissioned Jack for his original work. Chicago’s business elite, politicians, and residents made his efforts prolific. Today, his children and grandchildren share and preserve Jack’s passion for art and history in the creative arts, academia, music, and the written word. And throughout Beverly, Chicago, and parts unknown, Jack’s stories in brush and pencil help us remember him, too.

BALLET Students will learn the foundation of dance graduating through tiered levels matching age, learned techniques, and experience. Beginning first with Twinkle Toes Toddlers and then into Creative Movement, students begin by learning how a dance class operates, basic positions, basic warm-up and cool-down skills, and introductory techniques. Students graduate into Child Ballet Intro at age 5, building coordination, turn-out, and skill, and then move through Youth Ballet learning higher level techniques, musicality, and barre work while increasing flexibility and poise. Once at the intermediate/advanced level, dancers will strengthen and refine their ballet technique and be introduced to pointe technique in Youth Ballet II/Pointe I. The pointe technique is the part of classical ballet technique in which a ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet within pointe shoes. All dancers must wear pink leotards, pink tights, pink ballet shoes with hair off their face or white t-shirt, black sweatpants, and black ballet shoes. Grab the Spotlight Productions and performances are a great way for students to apply their newly-learned skills as performers and technicians. The Beverly Arts Center provides multiple ways for our students and members of our community to have time in the spotlight through our Junior Stars, Teen Studio, and BAC STAR+ productions. BAC JUNIOR STAR productions - Students ages 7-12 rehearse an up to 90-minute show, experiencing the art of theatre on a deeper level. More advanced theatre techniques are learned while cultivating character-development, performance technique, and vocal work. These productions culminate in a fully-realized production over multiple dates on the Baffes Theatre stage. BAC TEEN STUDIO productions - Students ages 13-17 rehearse a show with themes appropriate for older performers. These include both straight plays and musicals, and incorporate the BAC TECHIES class to help get the production up and running. Students learn audition techniques, more advanced theatre theories, acting exercises, warm-up techniques, and push their art to the limit. These productions culminate in a production over multiple dates in the Baffes Theatre or Studio Theatre. BAC STAR+ productions - Ages 7- adult. These productions are audition only. Students and community members will get the opportunity to work with a professional director, choreographer, musical director, and theatre designer in addition to performing live on-stage in the Baffes Theatre with professional actors.

Professional Performing Arts Productions Next to Normal
Wilcanic Studio Theatre Directed by | Emily Nelson
Spring 2022 To the outside world, the Goodman family are picture perfect: doting father Dan, his brilliant wife Diana and their two teenagers seem to be living the American Dream. But appearances can be deceiving, and beneath the surface, the cracks are widening. This riveting piece of theatre, which won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, deftly explores mental health and the collateral damage one family endures as they try to maintain their “normal”. Set to an award-winning rock score, this will be one production not to be missed.
Snow Globes. Tattoos. Scars That Look Like Trees. Wilcanic Studio Theatre Written & Directed by| Maria Welser
Coming Soon The world premiere of the winner of the 2020-21 New Playwright’s Festival, Maria Welser’s play “Snowglobes. Tattoos. Scars That Look like Trees” will receive a fully-staged production. Izzie is home for the holidays and her mother, Helen, is determined they have a happy time. She pulls out decorations, gets a Christmas tree and orders their favorite takeout. However, Helen soon discovers that Christmas with a college graduate is far different than Christmas with her little girl. They unpack more than just decorations as they come to realize why Helen is determined to keep Izzie “happy”. “Snowglobes” is a story about how religion, depression, anxiety, and hopelessly good intentions have caused a family of four, to dwindle to two.

Multiple Child Discount
The BAC offers a sibling discount of 5% off the member or non-member tuition price for the second sibling in the same workshop or camp. All siblings following the second sibling receive 10% tuition for the same workshop or camp. No sibling discounts will be applied to private lessons.
Photography Release
By registering for a class, the customer grants the Beverly Arts Center permission to photograph or video their child’s participation in the Beverly Arts Center’s education programs. The customer also grants the BAC permission to use their or their child’s likeness in a promotional capacity including, but not limited to, print materials, web site, online or out of home media, and other mediums now or later developed; as well as permission to share photography and video including their or their child’s likeness for use by media publication and institutions that fund the BAC’s operations and programs.
Tuition and Refunds CLASSES & WORKSHOPS Full tuition is refunded only for classes or workshops canceled by the BAC. Students who wish to drop a workshop after registering but before the first date of the workshop will be charged a fee of $25.00. No refunds will be offered once a workshop has begun even if the student is absent for the first day of class. No make-up class will be offered if a student misses a class.
During these unprecedented times, no refunds will be given if the classes move to a virtual platform. If the patron no longer wishes to participate, patrons will receive a class credit for a future session to be used within one year’s time. Registration ends the second full week of class. Classes may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. For classes paid for via invoice, customer acknowledges that remaining payments must be made according to the set payment plan. Full balance must be paid off by due date given. If payment is not paid in full on given due date, patrons will not be able to participate in any future registration. Registration fees will not be prorated for classes missed during the session, nor will they be applied to another session. Not attending a class does NOT constitute an official withdrawal from a course or cancellation of tuition or fees. LIVE EVENTS No refunds or exchanges will be honored once the tickets have been purchased. Should the Beverly Arts Center postpone an event, the original tickets will be honored for the new date. Should the Beverly Arts Center cancel an event, a full refund will be given, minus service fees.
