The Bare Bones of Architectural Design Upcoming Exhibition at CMOA Displays Creative Process PITTSBURGH, January 12, 2015- A new year means new, exciting exhibitions. For architect and art lovers alike, The Carnegie Museum of Art is showing a new exhibition called Sketch to Structure in the Heinz Architectural Center. From January 31 through May 25 of this year, the exhibition will dive into the architectural design process.* Over 100 original pieces will be displayed showing the development of early ideas of color, shapes, and concepts for architectural projects. Displays include sketches of different mediums, rough blueprints, and even 3d models or computer renderings. These pieces are divided into four sections representing different stages in the design process: Concept, Collaboration, Communication, and Case Studies.

Several projects to be shown include designs by the Jakob + MacFarlane firm for the Restaurant Georges in Paris, and several suggested color schemes by Winold Reiss for the Savarin Restaurant at Penn Station in NYC, and watercolors by Steven Holl for a client’s “Oceanic Home” in Hawaii. More early-in-planning peices include loose hand drawings by Richard Neutra, for the Los Angeles County Hall of Records and a progression of sketches and models for the apartment building Formosa1140 in LA designed by Lorcan O’Herlihy.
