About Vietnamese American Female Painter Michelle Pham
(Source: Cubism Paintings_Internet) And Abstract art uses visual language from shapes, patterns, colors and lines to create a bright light. Authors can exist independently, to some extent, with real references from the world. In 2000, Michelle Pham graduated with a degree in painting in the US, but it was difficult for Michelle to devote her full time to composing because she was busy struggling with her new, difficult daily life. It wasn’t until 2010 that Michelle really returned to the easel. But that same year, Michelle’s heart seemed to break because of the death of her niece Vanessa Pham in June of that year. Vanessa’s sudden and unprovoked death had a strong impact and prompted Michelle to create paintings for her desire to make an exhibition in memory of her dear deceased grandchild. Five years later, Michelle Pham fulfilled her desire in November 2015 with an exhibition called “In Loving Memory of Vanessa Pham Exhibition”, sponsored by the exhibition area of the Community Cultural Center, Richard J. Ernst of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).

Michelle Pham paints to convey her life experiences. Michelle uses many different colors, forms and materials such as watercolors, acrylics, oil colors, etc. Although Michelle Pham considers Picasso a model in painting, Michelle does not follow Picasso’s drawing style. Even so, we still see the silhouette of Picasso in some of Michelle’s motifs. Michelle Pham has worked as a creative artist at a building called Circle Tower for nearly 10 years and Michelle considers it her second family home. Circle Tower is located at the intersection of Arlington Avenue and Blake Lane about 10 miles from Washington DC, and it is here that Michelle released a series of works in the fall of 1996. Michelle Pham’s paintings in general have shown in accordance with the spirit and drawing style of the Abstract school: formless. Feeling about abstract paintings is not easy because the viewer must have the ability to “imagine” because the language of abstraction is to use the expressive elements of the visual language, but not the form, but the elements “inside”, that is, the “nature” of the form such as: signs, signals, symbols... to express... just like music without words. Through Michelle Pham’s paintings, viewers can feel one thing: the artist’s passion and emotions are very strong, and the gentleness moves in a relaxed way. The composition of most of Michelle Pham’s paintings carries the free spirit of abstraction; however, there are some paintings that are influenced by the Baroque style. Baroque art and architecture is visual art and design and construction produced during a period in Western art history roughly coinciding with the 17th century. The Baroque style began as a
continuation of the Renaissance period. Baroque art was pioneered by famous painters, architects and sculptors who brought the visual power of art to the masses.

Artist Michelle Pham uses bright colors, some paintings use contrasting tones to create strong visual effects, cheerfulness and movement. Expression of Abstraction is non-physical, including signal elements, symbols, color arrays... to express the author’s (artist’s) subjective views on life’s issues. The works show that the author has consulted and been influenced by many styles of the previous authors, so Michelle Pham’s paintings converge on the diversity of expression. Through Michelle Pham’s paintings, we can read nostalgic features about Michelle’s own life and expressions about events and obstacles happening around her, perhaps the most profound was the death of her dear nephew Vanessa. Michelle Pham is a person of art, not only in the field of painting but also in the field of music (piano and violin). Violin and piano help players express their emotions clearly. In the case of Michelle Pham, piano and violin are two companion tools with bright colors and contrasting tones creating strong visual effects, cheerfulness, and the movements Michelle often uses to express her feelings. In 2013, Michelle Pham started to reach out to the Vietnamese community through her creative activities and volunteer drawing courses, a work that is very respectful and encouraging. Michelle opened volunteer painting classes starting in the summer months of 1996 at Pastor Huynh Trang Tinh’s church in Falls Church. At the end of that summer, because of life, Michelle paused until she started again in the summer of 2013 at Graham Church in Falls Church. Next is at Huong Thien Pagoda in Fairfax. Then moved to Vietnam House at Falls Church until the virus outbreak (Covid-19) broke out, she stopped completely in February 2020. At Vietnam House, there is a symbolic tuition fee of 10 dollars / 1 month (4 Saturdays, 2 hours on Saturdays) to pay for Vietnam House. But children who cannot afford to pay tuition fees can still study like everyone else. The drawing tools Michelle gave to her students, not asking for money from anyone. Sometimes parents contribute money to help buy drawing tools for their students. Thus, Michelle Pham teaches drawing continuously from 2013 to 2020.
