Summer 2018
Building Community One Book at a Time
Dear Reader,
Ah, summertime in the Northwest! After our long, gray winter, the return of brilliant sunshine on blue water and the deep green calm of tree-lined trails is incredibly welcome. We’re out with friends and family hiking and camping near Mount Baker, flying kites at Zuanich Point Park, or simply relaxing (with a good book!) at one of our wonderful county parks. Our bookstore family has exciting summer adventures to share as well. The Bellingham Farmers Market returns to the Village Green with new hours. There’s a fantastic line-up for the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema. The Chuckanut Writers Conference is June 22-23. Lynden launches Hot Thursday Nights. And – thanks to your amazing support – we celebrate 38 years in business at our June 16 and 17 anniversary sale! Please join us for the celebration. We cover these fun events and more in this issue. The peace and beauty of our corner of the world is a major selling point when we pitch Bellingham and Lynden as stops on author tours. Sarah and Mary did just that in May when they met with publishers and authors at BookExpo America in New York City. You’re going to love the writers who will be coming to town! And to top it all off: there’s a new cafe upstairs in the Fairhaven store. We are honored that the award-winning Evolve Chocolate will open their first cafe on the mezzanine. (Chocolate martini at the end of a hot summer day? Yes, please!) We’re also re-imagining the mezzanine with new areas for writers and events. Books and chocolate – they really do make life better! Wishing you a summer full of delicious, local food, happy adventures, and good books,
– Kelly, Sarah, Paul
and the Entire Village Books and Paper Dreams Family

New Evolve Chocolate + Cafe on the mezzanine of Village Books promises a sensory blend of sweets, sips, and savories with a spectacular view. by Mary Vermillion, Marketing Director, Village Books and Paper Dreams
A
new restaurant will open soon on the mezzanine of Village Books and Paper Dreams in Fairhaven. Evolve Chocolate + Cafe, co-owned by Chef Christy Fox and Shannon Fox, will offer an array of sweets, sips and savories in the cozy space tucked among the book shelves, overlooking the Village Green and Bellingham Bay. Evolve Chocolate is known for its award-winning truffles, sipping chocolates and unique flavor profiles. The Foxes have sold their small-batch chocolate confections at wine, food and chocolate festivals from Seattle to San Francisco as well as the Bellingham and Edison farmers markets, Washington wineries, and at their popular “pop-up” chocolate lounges around Bellingham for the past five years. Chef Christy Fox’s experience goes beyond chocolate; she has a nearly 30-year background working in regional fine dining restaurants. The co-owners with the help of the community have been searching for a permanent home to offer a full sensory experience with a savory menu that highlights regional bounty, handcrafted cocktails, and desserts from scratch. “The Village Books team approached us to see if we were interested in the space. Humbled by their inquiry, we knew immediately that it was Evolve’s new home,”

Shannon Fox says. Christy Fox adds: “Being housed inside Village Books is like being given a big hug with mutual value structure and belief in community.” “When we heard Shannon and Christy’s plans for the space and read their proposed menu, it confirmed they are absolutely the right fit,” says Village Books co-owner Kelly Evert. “They are designing an experience that will encourage community, celebrate local food, and create memories.” Adds co-owner Sarah Hutton, “We have a shared goal to welcome our community to Fairhaven and to encourage conversation inspired by great food and great books. We think our customers are going to love it!”
“We have a shared goal to welcome our community to Fairhaven and to encourage conversation inspired by great food and great books. We think our customers are going to love it!” –Sarah Hutton, Village Books and Paper Dreams Co-owner
The Foxes will continue to support both Bellingham Farmers Markets by shopping there for fresh ingredients as well as maintaining a working booth at Saturday market. They’ll open a sidewalk cafe at Village Books’ parkside entrance near the Village Green during the Wednesday Fairhaven Market and Saturdays for Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema movies. Special events such as champagne soirees, high tea and author/book-themed dinners will be housed in their private event space.

Evolve Coming to Village Books - continued from page 5 The Foxes will launch a Kickstarter campaign so community members can support their cafe. While cafe construction is underway, Village Books owners will re-imagine the rest of the mezzanine level with new areas for writers and events. The bookstore and Evolve are working with The RE Store to upcycle fixtures, tables and seating. When it opens, Evolve Chocolate + Cafe’s hours will be open the same hours as Village Books and Paper Dreams. Watch our website and Facebook page for grand opening events. The Foxes are the fourth owners of the cafe space in Village Books. When Village Books founders Chuck and Dee Robinson designed the new Village Books, they made sure to incorporate a cafe where the community could gather. They approached local restaurateurs Fred and Lynn Berman, who created and opened Book Fare Cafe Oct. 25, 2004, the same day the new Village Books location opened. The Bermans sold Book Fare to Rachel Vasak in 2007. She ran it for two years then passed ownership to Lori Calderhead-Wetzel, who operated the cafe from 2009 to 2010. Chef Charles Claassen took the reins in late 2010. He is selling the cafe to pursue other interests. “With our continued long-term relationship with our neighbor Colophon Cafe and the exciting new addition of Evolve Chocolate + Cafe, Village Books and Paper Dreams remains Bellingham’s place to feed your mind, body and soul,” says co-owner Paul Hanson.
Read. Eat. Repeat. Indulge your palate and your mind in the new Evolve Chocolate + Cafe, perched deliciously above Village Books, Fairhaven.

So long, farewell
N E H E S R E D E I W AUF goodbye... Erika Set to Retire in August by Stephanie Douglas, Village Books and Paper Dreams
I
f you have been a regular customer at Paper Dreams over the course of the past 10 years, you are probably very familiar with Erika. A former chocolatier for Chocolate Necessities, you can usually find her on Mondays making vast amounts of fudge while running registers, tidying up the store, and occasionally designing our small window display. Originally from Germany, she loves chatting with tourists who speak her native tongue and her fellow German Club members. Though she is one of the hardest-working employees we have, she fills her free time with dancing, cooking, Zumba, and travelling, and every time I see her she always has a new funny story to share. We have come to depend on Erika’s keen eye and talent for merchandising, and her high standards for even small details encourages us all to live up to her meticulousness. But with her upcoming retirement, it is her energy and spirit that will be the biggest loss. While many people come and go, Erika has stayed all these years not just because she needs a job, but because she cares so much about Paper Dreams and wants to make it the best she can. She has put so much of her heart into her work, and in turn she has taken a place in all of our hearts. Though the swirls on our fudge will never be quite so perfect, and the many scarves never so neatly folded in her absence, we hope for many more years of seeing her as a customer and friend.

However, for a great many women, the answer is not so obvious and such is the case with the narrator of Sheila Heti's new novel. By turns funny, angsty, and very moving, we follow her as she tries to make one of the biggest decisions of her life and weighs all aspects. Well, does she or doesn't she? The King’s Witch : Frances Gorges Historical Trilogy, Book 1
by Sayaka Murata, translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori
by Tracy Borman
available in June, hardcover, Grove Press
available in July, hardcover, Atlantic Monthly Press
Keiko adores her dead-end job at a convenience store in Tokyo and doesn't understand the concern of her friends and relatives who want her to settle down. Murata brilliantly captures the atmosphere of the familiar convenience store that is so much part of life in Japan. With some laugh-out-loud moments prompted by the disconnect between Keiko's thoughts and those of the people around her, she provides a sharp look at Japanese society and the pressure to conform.
In March of 1603, Frances Gorges, a much-loved healer, is happy to stay at home when intolerant King James of Scotland succeeds to the throne. But when her ambitious uncle forcibly brings Frances to the palace, she is a ready target for the twisted scheming of the court. As a dark campaign to destroy both King and Parliament gathers pace, Frances is surrounded by danger. Acclaimed as a brilliant historian, Tracy Borman proves with this thrilling debut novel that she is also a born storyteller.

Warlight
by Michael Ondaatje available now, hardcover, Knopf
Nobody writes like Michael Ondaatje and he proves it with every single book he releases. Warlight is no exception and it captivated me from the start. It's a strange story. Two children, a brother and sister, are left in the care of a man they don't know as their parents depart for top-secret war work. The years spent with this man, who they call the Moth, are filled with gatherings of strangers in their house at night. These people seem to have something in common that is all very mysterious. And then one day, their mother returns. Enigmatic is the best word I can use to sum up this one. I will definitely be reading it again. –Claire

by Patrick Hasburgh available in June, hardcover, Harper Perennial
Part thriller, part family novel about an expat American living and surfing in Mexico, the family he loves, and the murder he witnesses. “Pirata is a great summer ride. It’s rare to find a novel that’s so harrowing, funny and touching at the same time, but Patrick Hasburgh somehow pulls it off. His surf-bum narrator is a new classic — think of Philip Marlowe, on a longboard.” –Carl Hiaasen

The Ensemble by Aja Gabel
available now, hardcover, Riverhead Books
My favorite book thus far for 2018. The story starts as a group of talented college students prepare their quartet. Brit, the second violinist, grew up on an island off of Bellingham. Henry, a musical prodigy, seems to always have it easy. Cellist Daniel is angry and unsettled. And Jana, who is the first violinist and leader of the Van Ness String Quartet. We follow the four musicians as they age, and they navigate success, marriage, betrayal and loyalty. Following these four unforgettable characters, Gabel's debut novel gives a behind the scenes look into the competitive, stressful world of being a professional musician. Octet in E Flat Major, op.20 –Felix Mendelssohn –Kelly E.
Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg
available in June, hardcover, One World
Set in the 18th-century London of notorious thieves and queer subcultures, this daring, genre-bending novel is a bold reimagining of Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera. Confessions of the Fox blends high-spirited adventure, subversive history, and provocative wit. Writing with the narrative mastery of Sarah Waters and the seductive intimacy of Jeannette Winterson, Jordy Rosenberg is an audacious storyteller of extraordinary talent.
The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner
available now, hardcover, Scribner
Kushner’s protagonist is a single mother who ends up in jail, separated from her young son and convicted of murder committed in his (and her own) defense. Romy is a strong and desperate person, trying to be a good mother but caught up in a mess of bad circumstances and bad life decisions. Not fully a victim, she is not totally culpable for the way her life turned out either. This is a novel whose thoughtfulness saves it from being as dark as it could be, and it’s impressive how Kushner makes it look so easy. –Stephanie

Pretend I'm Dead
available now, hardcover, Scribner
by Jen Beagin
A sweeping, romantic, and profoundly moving novel, set in Europe in the aftermath of WWI and Los Angeles in the 1950s, about a mysterious amnesiac, and the doomed romance between a former soldier and a war widow. It is a cinematic, masterful, and deeply engaging story about the tragedy and compromises of war.
available now, hardcover, Scribner
"Pretend I'm Dead is a shambling, lyrical dispatch from the dive bars and the flop houses where the downtrodden, divested of hope, livelihood, good health, and any number of other markers of respectability, nevertheless retain full possession of their hearts and minds, their integrity, their souls. Rare is...the humor and compassion that Beagin manages to locate in some of the country's, and the psyche's, darkest corners." –Joshua Ferris

With each new book she writes, Moshfegh tackles a completely new genre. After a mystery and a collection of short stories (both shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize), she takes on contemporary fiction with a characterdriven novel whose construction is centered completely around a rather unlikeable, privileged, directionless young woman. The payoff comes at the end when you realize how masterfully Moshfegh has been leading her protagonist to a kind of redemption, an acknowledgment of a need for human connection after an experiment in its total rejection. –Stephanie
When Sarah meets Eddie, they connect instantly and fall in love. So when Eddie leaves for a long-booked vacation and promises to call from the airport, she has no cause to doubt him. But he doesn’t call. Weeks go by and she discovers there is a reason for Eddie’s disappearance, and it’s the one thing they didn’t share with each other: the truth.

I enjoyed Tell the Machine Goodnight because it explores through the lens of speculative fiction that hairline boundary between what we believe will make us happy/contented and what we may not know will bring us actual joy/fulfillment. Katie Williams’ writing blends science fiction, family drama, philosophy, social commentary, and keen poetic prose in a story that feels very close to real life, with people who are not far away from being us. –Hannah

MARK TWAIN Returns to Fairhaven In August 1895, Samuel Clemens – better known as Mark Twain – visited Fairhaven. Now, he's back. Or at least his likeness is. Like Fairhaven founder Dirty Dan Harris and community leader J.J. Donovan, a life-sized bronze sculpture of Twain seated on a bench, reading a book, has been installed on 11th Street in front of the bookstore. Donated by local community members Anne and Michael Botwin to the City of Bellingham and Village Books and dedicated at a May 26 ceremony, the bench has space so you can sit awhile with the legendary writer and humorist.

Other ready-to-eat options include breads, pastries, Indian foods and frozen treats. The Fairhaven Market also features crafters providing local, hand-crafted jewelry, all-natural bath and beauty products, henna tattoos and more. The popular Fresh Local Music series will continue with live music from 4-6pm each week. “Each year, we count the days to the return of the Bellingham Farmers Market to the Fairhaven Village Green,” says Village Books co-owner Paul Hanson. “It’s pretty incredible to walk out Village Books' back door and into the vibrancy of the Wednesday Market. It’s a great amenity for the people who live and work in Fairhaven, but we hope everyone – no matter where they live in Whatcom County – will experience this intimate, welcoming Market this summer.”

Flavor Bombs : The Umami Ingredients That Make Taste Explode
by Adam Fleischman
available now, hardcover, Rux Martin
Why does everyone love burgers and pizza? When Adam Fleischman investigated, he discovered what they — and many other ultra-flavorful dishes have in common: umami. A renegade self-taught cook, Fleischman deployed this savory “fifth dimension of taste” to ratchet up flavor using ingredients naturally rich in umami, such as Parmesan, tomatoes, caramelized onions, and anchovy paste. In so doing, he created ultimate versions of icons, including Umami Burger with Port and Stilton, Sweet and Savory Brisket, and Parmesan Fondue.
How to Taste : The Curious Cook's Handbook to Seasoning and Balance, from Umami to Acid and Beyond — With Recipes by Becky Selengut
available now, hardcover, Sasquatch Books
This engaging and approachable (and humorous) guide to taste and flavor will make you a more skilled and confident home cook. How to Taste outlines the underlying principles of taste, and then takes a deep dive into salt, acid, bitter, sweet, fat, umami, bite (heat), aromatics, and texture. You'll find out how temperature impacts your enjoyment of the dishes you make as does color, alcohol, and more. How to Taste will ultimately help you feel confident about why and how various components of a dish are used to create balance, harmony, and deliciousness.

The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse is a work of an avid heart, a writer's writer, and a storytelling genius.
Thursday, July 26, 6pm –Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders George Saunders spins an unforgettable story of familial love and loss that breaks free of its realistic, historical framework into a supernatural realm both hilarious and terrifying. Willie Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln, finds himself in a strange purgatory where ghosts mingle, gripe, commiserate, quarrel, and enact bizarre acts of penance. Within this transitional state — called, in the Tibetan tradition, the bardo — a monumental struggle erupts over young Willie's soul.
Thursday, August 30, 6pm –Human Acts by Han Kang In the midst of a violent student uprising in South Korea, a young boy named Dong-ho is shockingly killed. The story of this tragic episode unfolds in a sequence of interconnected chapters as the victims and the bereaved encounter suppression, denial, and the echoing agony of the massacre. From Dong-ho's best friend who meets his own fateful end; to an editor struggling against censorship; to a prisoner and a factory worker, each suffering from traumatic memories; and to Dong-ho's own grief-stricken mother; and through their collective heartbreak and acts of hope is the tale of a brutalized people in search of a voice.

CONTEMPORARY
CULTURAL CRITICISM
The Darkening Web : The War for Cyberspace by Alexander Klimburg
available in July, paperback, Penguin Books
Klimburg brings us face-to-face with the range of threats the struggle for cyberspace presents, from an apocalyptic scenario of debilitated civilian infrastructure to a 1984-like erosion of privacy and freedom of expression. He reveals the extent to which the battle for control of the Internet is as complex and perilous as the one surrounding nuclear weapons during the Cold War — and quite possibly as dangerous for humanity as a whole.
Rendezvous with Oblivion : Essays by Thomas Frank
available in June, hardcover, Metropolitan Books
Frank's accounts of folly and exploitation are here brought together in a single volume unified by Frank’s distinctive voice, sardonic wit, and anti-orthodox perspective. They capture a society where every status signifier is hollow, where the allure of mobility is just another con game, and where rebellion too often yields nothing. It is a booster shot of energy, reality, and moral outrage.
PLAY! The Nasty Woman Game : A Card Game for Every Feminist
#NeverAgain : A New Generation Draws the Line by David Hogg, Lauren Hogg
available in June, paperback, Random House
This book is a manifesto for the movement begun that day, one that has already changed America — with voices of a new generation that are speaking truth to power, and are determined to succeed where their elders have failed. With moral force and clarity, a new generation has made it clear that problems previously deemed unsolvable due to powerful lobbies and political cowardice will be theirs to solve.
Messing with the Enemy : Surviving in a Social Media World of Hackers, Terrorists, Russians, and Fake News
by Clint Watts
available now, hardcover, Harper
Business executives have coughed up millions in fraudulent wire transfers, seemingly good kids have joined the Islamic State, and staunch anti-communist Reagan Republicans have cheered the Russian government’s hacking of a Democratic presidential candidate’s e-mails. As a former FBI Special Agent and leading cyber-security expert, Watts knows how they do it because he’s mirrored their methods to understand their intentions, combat their actions, and co-opt their efforts.
The Perfect Weapon : War, Sabotage, and Fear in the Cyber Age by David E. Sanger
available in June, hardcover, Crown
Behind the Russian cyberattacks that may have thrown the 2016 election; behind the Sony hack; behind mysterious power outages around the world and the disappearance of thousands of personnel records from poorly guarded government servers are the traces of a new and powerful weapon, one that has the potential to remake global conflict like nothing since the invention of the atomic bomb.
by Amanda Brinkman available in July, game, Clarkson Potter
Amanda Brinkman is the creator of the T-shirt that became a rallying cry for women all over the world, and now she’s back with an addictively fun card game. Through a series of prompts and actions, the Nasty Woman Game gets your crew talking, laughing, and thinking about politics and social issues. And because it’s based on your improvised responses, you set the tone: serious, irreverent, or downright offensive.

Sh*tshow!... The Country's Collapsing and the Ratings Are Great by Charlie LeDuff
CULTURAL CRITICISM
available now, hardcover, Penguin
I first became a fan of Leduff's when I read Detroit: An American Autopsy back in 2013. Follow LeDuff as he travels the country between 2014 and November 2017, visiting spots like Flint and Detroit, Michigan, the Mexican/U.S. border at the Rio Grande, and Ferguson, Missouri. His scathing social commentary is in full swing here as he dissects the state of the Union as he sees it, choosing no side except that of the Everyman/woman. He is the thorn in every politician's side at press conferences and sure, he's prone to antics, but behind the sh*tshow truth is to be found. He's one ballsy journalist. Can I say ballsy here? Too late. –Claire
The Retreat of Western Liberalism
The Death of Truth : Notes on Falsehood in the Age of Trump
by Michiko Kakutani
available in July, hardcover, Tim Duggan Books
How did truth become an endangered species? This decline began decades ago, and in The Death of Truth, former New York Times critic Michiko Kakutani takes a penetrating look at the cultural forces that contributed to this gathering storm. In social media and literature, television, academia, and political campaigns, Kakutani identifies the trends — originating on both the right and the left — that have combined to elevate subjectivity over factuality, science, and common values.
by Edward Luce
available now, paperback, Grove Press
From Financial Times chief US columnist and commentator Edward Luce, The Retreat of Western Liberalism offers a sharp and insightful look at why the values the West has long championed are now in danger, with a new afterword. Combining on-the-ground reporting with intelligent analysis, Luce makes a powerful statement about the weakening of Western hegemony and gives a forward-thinking analysis of what those who believe in enlightenment values must do to defend them.

Planet Funny : How Comedy Took Over Our Culture by Ken Jennings
available now, hardcover, Scribner
Ken Jennings traces the history of funnyness — from fart jokes on clay Sumerian tablets to Colbert's conservative persona. Born to a traditional Shia Muslim family in Yemen, Mohammed Al Samawi was distanced from his peers early in life by impairment resulting from a stroke. In compensation, he studied hard. His active mind led him to closer relationships with teachers, fluency in English, the gift of a bible, and a strong will to bring a fractured world together. He attended interfaith, international peace conferences. Then came the death threats and a horrific civil war. This memoir tells the harrowing and uplifting story of Al Samawi’s escape from Yemen, aided by a small group of tireless Western interfaith activists. Knowing he survived, I was still scared as I read this book. But knowing that so many young people strive for a better world gives me hope. –Terri

History God, War, and Providence : The Epic Struggle of Roger Williams and the Narragansett Indians against the Puritans of New England
Hue 1968 : A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam by Mark Bowden
available now, paperback, Grove Press
by James A. Warren
available in June, hardcover, Scribner
At the heart of God, War, and Providence are the tangled relations in 17thcentury New England between the aggrandizing Puritan oligarchy, the powerful Narragansetts and their affiliated tribes, and the most "modern" figure of the era, Roger Williams. The Narragansetts' courageous resistance campaign, aided by Williams, serves as a telling precedent for white-Native American encounters along the North American frontier for the next 250 years.
With unprecedented access to war archives and interviews with participants from both sides, Bowden narrates each stage of this crucial battle through multiple viewpoints. Played out over 24 days and ultimately costing 10,000 lives, the Battle of Hue was the bloodiest of the entire war. When it ended, the American debate was never again about winning, only about how to leave. Hue 1968 is a gripping and moving account of this pivotal moment.

Bikes and Bloomers : Victorian
by Maggie Andrews, Janis Lomas

available in June, hardcover, The History Press
What are the items that symbolize the journey of women from second-class citizens with no legal rights, no voting rights, and no official status to the powerful people they are today? And what are the objects that still oppress women? From the corset to the Pill, the typewriter to the first pair of women’s trousers and the invention of IVF — there are objects through history that document the developing role of women in society.
Empress : The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan
by Ruby Lal
available in July, hardcover, W.W. Norton
by Kat Jungnickel
available now, hardcover, Goldsmiths Press
Despite its benefits, cycling was a material and ideological minefield for women. Conventional fashions were unworkable, with skirts catching in wheels and tangling in pedals. Yet wearing "rational" cycle wear could provoke verbal and sometimes physical abuse from those threatened by newly mobile women. Seeking a solution, pioneering women not only imagined, made, and wore radical new forms of cycle wear but also patented their inventive designs. Drawing on in-depth archival research and inventive practice, Kat Jungnickel brings to life in rich detail the little-known stories of six inventors of the 1890s.
When it came to hunting, she was a master shot. As a dress designer, few could compare. An ingenious architect, she innovated the use of marble in her parents’ mausoleum that inspired her stepson’s Taj Mahal. She was both celebrated and reviled for her political acumen and diplomatic skill. In 1611, 34-year-old Nur Jahan, daughter of a Persian noble and widow of a subversive official, became the twentieth and most cherished wife of the Emperor Jahangir. While other wives were secluded behind walls, Nur ruled the vast Mughal Empire alongside her husband, and governed in his stead as his health failed and his attentions wandered from matters of state.

A Memoir
by Michelle Tea
by Beck Dorey-Stein
available now, paperback, Amethyst Editions
available in July, hardcover, Spiegel & Grau
A queer countercultural icon divulges on all things artistic, romantic, and neurotic in this collection of essays. Delivered with her signature honesty and dark humor, this is Tea’s first-ever collection of journalistic writing. As she blurs the line between telling other people’s stories and her own, she turns an investigative eye to the genre that’s nurtured her entire career — memoir — and considers the price that art demands be paid from life.
Dorey-Stein was scraping by in DC when a posting on Craigslist landed her in the Oval Office as one of Barack Obama’s stenographers. The ultimate DC outsider, she joined the team who accompanied the president wherever he went. On whirlwind trips across time zones, Beck forged friendships with a group of fellow travelers who, like her, left their lives behind to hop aboard Air Force One in service of the president.

Historically reviled as dangerous pests, killer whales were dying by the hundreds, even thousands, by the 1950s. In the Pacific Northwest, fishermen shot them, scientists harpooned them, and the Canadian government mounted a machine gun to eliminate them. But that all changed in 1965, when Seattle entrepreneur Ted Griffin became the first person to swim and perform with a captive killer whale. Over the following decade, live display transformed views of Orcinus orca. The public embraced killer whales as charismatic and friendly, while scientists enjoyed their first access to live orcas. In the Pacific Northwest, these captive encounters reshaped regional values and helped drive environmental activism. This is the definitive history of how the feared and despised "killer" became the beloved "orca.”

The Order of Time
available now, hardcover, Farrar, Straus and Giroux
available now, hardcover, Riverhead Books
In this scintillating collection, Holt explores the human mind, the cosmos, and the thinkers who’ve tried to encompass the latter with the former. With his trademark clarity and humor, Holt probes the mysteries of quantum mechanics, the quest for the foundations of mathematics, and the nature of logic and truth. Holt offers a painless and playful introduction to many of our most beautiful but least understood ideas.
We all experience time, but the more scientists learn about it, the more mysterious it remains. Weaving together ideas from philosophy, science and literature, Rovelli suggests that our perception of the flow of time depends on our perspective, better understood starting from the structure of our brain and emotions than from the physical universe.

Happy Brain : Where Happiness Comes From, and Why
By Dean Burnett
available now, hardcover, W.W. Norton
The pursuit of happiness is one of the most common and enduring quests of human life. It’s what drives us to get a job, fall in love, watch stand-up comedy, go to therapy, have questionable obsessions, and come home at the end of the day. But where does happiness come from, and why do we need it so much? Is lasting, permanent happiness possible — or should it be? Dean Burnett explores these questions from a neuroscientific perspective. He combines the latest research and theories about how the brain works with interviews and contributions from relevant individuals, such as relationship experts, psychology professors, comedy writers, celebrities, millionaire gurus, and pretty much anyone else involved in bringing about happiness in others.

Humor Maeve in America : Essays by a Girl from Somewhere Else
Calypso
by David Sedaris
by Maeve Higgins
available now, hardcover, Little, Brown, and Co.
available in August, paperback, Penguin
This book is right up my alley and I loved it to pieces. Maeve Higgins is hilarious and really insightful, delivering really keen insights about American and Irish culture with a lot of humor and grace. I relate to the journey of going somewhere else to really find yourself, and I highly recommend Maeve’s unique perspective on roaming in order to really find your home. –Hannah
This is a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort. Sedaris's powers of observation have never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter is unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future.

Bobby Sky: Boy Band Or Die by Joe Shine
Jazz Owls :
A Novel of the Zoot Suit Riots
by Margarita Engle & Rudy Gutierrez Illustrated by Rudy Gutierrez available now, hardcover, Dutton
Spurred by obvious passion and boundless knowledge, Engle's Jazz Owls is an incredibly riveting and meaningful expression of verse and raw power. Engle colors the passion, desperation, frustration, and grief that spurred and calmed the infamous Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. Her novel takes on a mind of its own as it draws insight and character from multiple different perspectives, and highlights the devastation left in the wake of such a deeply abominable act. In addition, it celebrates what it means to be Mexican and to be proud of your heritage. –Abby D. age 18

This book happily surprised me. With the name Boy Band or Die, I wasn't expecting the smart and intriguing novel that it was. This fast-paced story will take you on a journey with Hutch, a 14-year-old who can't catch a break. After being incarcerated again, Hutch is given an ultimatum, die or become an agent for FATE. After choosing the latter he is sent out to protect Ryu Enomoto, a Future Important Person. YAs will love the twist and turns of this book and won't be able to put it down till they know how everything unfolds. –Sam T. age 17
Save the Date
by Morgan Matson available in June, hardcover, Simon & Schuster Teen
Morgan Matson’s Save the Date is an incredibly fun read. She paints a loud family who has reunited after spreading out across the country. Matson portrays the struggles of Charlie, a young adult about to go to college who is unwilling to leave the familiar behind. Her indecision, love life, and dedicated love for her family play out across the backdrop of a chaotic family wedding. You feel for the stubbornness of Matson’s heroine as she tries to determine what she wants for herself. Matson has created another heartfelt and lighthearted picture of a witty young heroine. –Kira M. age 16

Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne
available now, hardcover, Houghton Mifflin
Young engineer Stella Ainsley jumps at the chance to teach a young girl aboard the Rochester, a spaceship orbiting the moon that is also rumored to be haunted. Far from her previous life and friend, she grows close to the ship's captain, Hugo Fairfax, all while conspiracies erupt and threats are made personal. The question is: what will Stella do to fix these problems? A modern take on Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Brightly Burning is both mysterious and swoon-worthy, sure to keep readers up late into the night. –Aria S. age 17
Brightly Burning
Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne is a stunning debut. The story is a retelling of the classic Jane Eyre, only set in space. Stella Ainsley is an engineer who dreams of being a teacher. She is ecstatic when she is offered a governess position on board the private ship, Rochester. There she meets the mysterious Captain Hugo Fairfax. Against her better judgement, she begins to fall for him. The space setting really adds a lot to the story and I enjoyed all the little nods to the original Jane Eyre. This was a beautiful read and I would recommend it. –Sarah K. age 16
Tradition
Beautiful prose fills in the outlines of a deeply touching story in Janice Lynn Mather’s gorgeous debut novel Learning to Breathe. Sixteen-year-old Indy has lived life by the book, trying to escape the reputation of her mother and be faithful to her grandmother. But when she’s sent away to Nassau to live with distant relatives, she must find a place in the new world she now lives in―and conceal her unwanted pregnancy. Indy is trying to find home: a home that’s not defined by where you are, but by who you’re with. This bittersweet, painfully true and brilliantly written novel will warm the hearts of any upper-teen reader. –Nich V. age 17

From Brendan Kiely, co-author of All American Boys, comes a powerful book discussing rape culture and the role tradition plays in it. At Fullbrook Academy there are numerous traditions from the seniors rating first year girls by their looks in the student handbook, to athletes stacking hockey pucks in their dorm windows to count their “conquests,” to perhaps one of the most dangerous traditions of all: the expectation that first year girls will go to and leave from the school-sponsored dance with senior boys. Tradition serves as an excellent reminder that we shouldn't let dangerous traditions go unchecked. – Gretal M. age 18

Fun Fact
Learning to Breathe
Emily France's Zen and Gone made me cry. As someone who actively pursues Buddhism, this novel really hit home. France's story is a powerful conglomeration of family, spirituality, and struggle, and depicts the determination and passion of a group of young adults who are still trying to figure out who they are. Her story keeps nothing hidden in its relatableness and frankness, and is a complex, hilarious, and heart-wrenching read. –Abby D. age 18

By Marisha Pessl

This was a fun and creepy read! How could you pick between yourself and your friends if only one of you could survive? This is the very basic premise... it gets much more complicated and twisty. Pessl kept me in suspense right up until the end, so I had to finish the book all in one go. Now I want to read her other books; this one had me hooked! –Lauren S. Young Adult VB Staff Recommends... Jazz Owls : A Novel of the Zoot Suit Riots by Margarita Engle Illustrated by: Rudy Gutierrez
available now, paperback, Simon & Schuster
This poem-history grabbed my heart immediately and showed me a part of World War II history that I was unaware of. Margarita Engle’s poetry blends music and sobering experiences, joy and uncertainty, historical events and the life of fiction together so well — this is historical fiction at its finest. Please take a turn through her verses. –Hannah See page 69 for a YARC recommendation of this book!
Sleight
by Jennifer Sommersby available now, hardcover, Sky Pony Press
What is it that fascinates me so about circus folk? I think it's their inherently unsettled existence that is based on magic and illusion that keeps me watching. And this book does just that, it keeps me reading. Naturally, it begins with a mystery and the death of the young heroine's aerialist mother. What force caused her to plummet from such heights doing a routine she had done thousands of times? It turns out, there are dark forces at work that have been hunting her, and now her daughter must take up the fight. Compelling, magical, and just the beginning, I can't wait for the next installment. –Claire

With its humor, heart, and wonderful introspection, this newest from Maurene Goo goes straight to the feel-good part of your being. –Hana See page 69 for a YARC recommendation of this book!

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings : 15 Retellings of Asian Myths and Legends
by Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman available in June, hardcover, Greenwillow Books
This is a fantastic interpretive collection based on Asian mythology and folktales. In these stories, wonders unfold like a mountain falling in love with a hunter, two sisters shape-shifting their way out of imprisonment, and the sun saving the moon from death. My poet’s brain was inspired by these stories which were new to me, and I feel this is a group of tales everyone can glean something from. –Hannah

What’s Better than Prom? Photos at Village Books! Ferndale High School seniors Laurel Brinson-Larrabee, Ashlyn Cearns, Mari Nordeen and Emma Olson have known each other since grade school. So they wanted to remember their senior prom with special photos at their favorite bookstore, Village Books. With their OK, we shared their images on Facebook, and, not surprisingly, the beautiful scenes of the young women and their dates in formal wear among the stacks went viral. The post was shared more than 1,000 times, liked by more 1,300 people, and seen by close to 200,000. “We’re passionate about local businesses,” Cearns says. “Books were influential in our childhood, and we thought it would be special to reflect on that.” Despite all the online buzz for their prom-inspired photos, ironically, they didn’t go to the dance. After taking their photos in Fairhaven, they went to a show at The Upfront Theatre.

JUNE Thursday, June 7, 7pm Poetry! HARVEY SCHWARTZ –Hampden Road Join us for an evening of poetry and music with this celebrated local poet. "Hampden Road is a place of sardine can row houses with spiked hair antennae looking down to sneakers hanging on telephone wires. It’s where Sputnik slowly crawling across the sky dropped cinders on us. Caddys, Chevs, and Fords spun out on curves to scare us kids and impress the chicks. I grew up on Hampden Road, which is a part of me. But so are my ancestors. Grandpa drove a Chevy Wagon, called it his machine, but he never shared his thoughts or what his eyes had seen. And so is history. Crystal sky impales goose-stepping troops with blood-stained feet." BONUS! Sunday, June 10, 4pm KYMBERLY CUMMINGS –Will You Remember Me… Time Shared This book is about the purpose and value of human life. It was born out of Cummings' desire to honor her parents’ lives so she made a book that expresses anecdotes of their time shared together. Originally from Federal Way, Kymberly Cummings has lived in Bellingham for over 30 years. She is a graduate of Western Washington University and taught in the Blaine School District for 27 years. She is currently retired from 30 years of public school service and while working on her writing is also substitute teaching in the Bellingham and Ferndale School Districts.
Respond-ability and the Pause. It's all about slowing down. When confronted we can do more than flight, fight or freeze. As humans we have choice when responding to stimulus (things outside ourselves). We can be reactive — respond by reflex — or we can be proactive and pause — check in with ourselves — before giving our response. Taking deep breaths, counting to 10, trying to figure out what is going on with the other person and with ourselves will benefit us during conversation. Pausing especially when we are in a tense situation or experiencing conflict, but it's also a great way to learn communication in all aspects of our lives. Join Dawn Harju in the Readings Gallery for this free mini-workshop sponsored by Excellence NW. Harju has a contagious way of inviting people to be their best self, and is committed to the fabric of world-wide goodwill. She volunteers with Excellence Northwest, a non-profit organization, and is dedicated to the success of Excellence Seminars International.

PETER DONAHUE –Three Sides Water In Three Sides Water, award-winning author Peter Donahue portrays the lives of three young people who seek meaning in an often violent, insensible world. In his newest work of literary fiction, Donahue distills the raw and vivid world of the Olympic Peninsula into a stunning work that challenges what it means — in three distinct eras — to live life with purpose and integrity. Peter Donahue is the author of the novels Clara and Merritt and Madison House, winner of the 2005 Langum Prize for American Historical Fiction, and the short story collection The Cornelius Arms. He teaches at Wenatchee Valley College at Omak and lives in Winthrop, Washington.

With photographs, stories, and short readings, Jonathan takes his audiences on an enthralling journey into the surprising and poetic workings of the tide. Thursday, July 12, 6:30pm THE CHUCKANUT RADIO HOUR at WCC's Heiner Theater featuring THOR HANSON –Buzz: The Nature and Necessity of Bees
Join the audience for the taping of our live radio show featuring monthly interviews with noteworthy authors, live music, fun skits, groaner jokes, performance poetry, and more! This month we're excited to welcome the award-winning author of The Triumph of Seeds and Feathers to the show. Thor Hanson will introduce us to his latest book, Buzz. Bees are like oxygen: ubiquitous, essential, and, for the most part, unseen. While we might overlook them, they lie at the heart of relationships that bind the human and natural worlds. In Buzz, Thor Hanson takes us on a journey that begins 125 million years ago, when a wasp first dared to feed pollen to its young. From honeybees and bumbles to lesser-known diggers, miners, leafcutters, and masons, bees have long been central to our harvests, our mythologies, and our very existence. They’ve given us sweetness and light, the beauty of flowers, and as much as a third of the foodstuffs we eat. And, alarmingly, they are at risk of disappearing. As informative and enchanting as the waggle dance of a honeybee, Buzz shows us why all bees are wonders to celebrate and protect. Read this book and you’ll never overlook them again. Thor Hanson is a conservation biologist and Guggenheim fellow. He lives with his wife and son on an island in Washington State. Tickets $5: available at Village Books and brownpapertickets.com. Receive a free ticket with the pre-purchase of Buzz.

With four events in the Pacific Northwest, and all of its costumes, books, crafters, music, and so many other aspects, it's safe to say that steampunk has caught on in the region. But what is it? In this presentation author Jeffrey Cook will discuss the history of the genre, its roots in 1960s literature and movies, its predecessors and inspirations, and where some of the modern explosion came from. Author Jeffrey Cook lives in Maple Valley with his wife and three large dogs. He has written sports pieces for the Bellingham Herald and RPG books for Seattle's Deep7 Press, but the Dawn of Steam series were the first of his novels.

Free Workshop!
What am I making important? The biggest choice we make is what we choose to make important. How can you tell what you're making important? First we have to understand that we are a choice. Have you ever gotten into a situation where you've agreed to something and later wished you didn't? Or agreed to something you had no interest in actually doing? “Live your life for you not for anyone else. Don’t let the fear of being judged, rejected or disliked stop you from being yourself ” –Sonya Parker. Dawn Harju has a contagious way of inviting people to be their best self, and is committed to the fabric of world-wide goodwill. She volunteers with Excellence Northwest, a non-profit (501c3) organization, and is dedicated to the success of Excellence Seminars International. She has a passion for children, animals, and the environment.
