Ah, summertime in the Northwest! After our long, gray winter, the return of brilliant sunshine on blue water and the deep green calm of tree-lined trails is incredibly welcome. We’re out with friends and family hiking and camping near Mount Baker, flying kites at Zuanich Point Park, or simply relaxing (with a good book!) at one of our wonderful county parks. Our bookstore family has exciting summer adventures to share as well. The Bellingham Farmers Market returns to the Village Green with new hours. There’s a fantastic line-up for the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema. The Chuckanut Writers Conference is June 22-23. Lynden launches Hot Thursday Nights. And – thanks to your amazing support – we celebrate 38 years in business at our June 16 and 17 anniversary sale! Please join us for the celebration. We cover these fun events and more in this issue. The peace and beauty of our corner of the world is a major selling point when we pitch Bellingham and Lynden as stops on author tours. Sarah and Mary did just that in May when they met with publishers and authors at BookExpo America in New York City. You’re going to love the writers who will be coming to town! New Evolve Chocolate + Cafe on the mezzanine of Village Books promises a sensory blend of sweets, sips, and savories with a spectacular view. by Mary Vermillion, Marketing Director, Village Books and Paper Dreams

new restaurant will open soon on the mezzanine of Village Books and Paper Dreams in Fairhaven. Evolve Chocolate + Cafe, co-owned by Chef Christy Fox and Shannon Fox, will offer an array of sweets, sips and savories in the cozy space tucked among the book shelves, overlooking the Village Green and Bellingham Bay. Evolve Chocolate is known for its award-winning truffles, sipping chocolates and unique flavor profiles. The Foxes have sold their small-batch chocolate confections at wine, food and chocolate festivals from Seattle to San Francisco as well as the Bellingham and Edison farmers markets, Washington wineries, and at their popular “pop-up” chocolate lounges around Bellingham for the past five years. Chef Christy Fox’s experience goes beyond chocolate; she has a nearly 30-year background working in regional fine dining restaurants. The co-owners with the help of the community have been searching for a permanent home to offer a full sensory experience with a savory menu that highlights regional bounty, handcrafted cocktails, and desserts from scratch. “The Village Books team approached us to see if we were interested in the space. Humbled by their inquiry, we knew immediately that it was Evolve’s new home,”

Christy Fox adds: “Being housed inside Village Books is like being given a big hug with mutual value structure and belief in community.” “When we heard Shannon and Christy’s plans for the space and read their proposed menu, it confirmed they are absolutely the right fit,” says Village Books co-owner Kelly Evert. “They are designing an experience that will encourage community, celebrate local food, and create memories.” Adds co-owner Sarah Hutton, “We have a shared goal to welcome our community to Fairhaven and to encourage conversation inspired by great food and great books. The Foxes will continue to support both Bellingham Farmers Markets by shopping there for fresh ingredients as well as maintaining a working booth at Saturday market. They’ll open a sidewalk cafe at Village Books’ parkside entrance near the Village Green during the Wednesday Fairhaven Market and Saturdays for Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema movies. Special events such as champagne soirees, high tea and author/book-themed dinners will be housed in their private event space.

Evolve Coming to Village Books - continued from page 5 The Foxes will launch a Kickstarter campaign so community members can support their cafe. While cafe construction is underway, Village Books owners will re-imagine the rest of the mezzanine level with new areas for writers and events. The bookstore and Evolve are working with The RE Store to upcycle fixtures, tables and seating. When it opens, Evolve Chocolate + Cafe’s hours will be open the same hours as Village Books and Paper Dreams. Watch our website and Facebook page for grand opening events. The Foxes are the fourth owners of the cafe space in Village Books. When Village Books founders Chuck and Dee Robinson designed the new Village Books, they made sure to incorporate a cafe where the community could gather. They approached local restaurateurs Fred and Lynn Berman, who created and opened Book Fare Cafe Oct. 25, 2004, the same day the new Village Books location opened. The Bermans sold Book Fare to Rachel Vasak in 2007. She ran it for two years then passed ownership to Lori Calderhead-Wetzel, who operated the cafe from 2009 to 2010. Chef Charles Claassen took the reins in late 2010. He is selling the cafe to pursue other interests. “With our continued long-term relationship with our neighbor Colophon Cafe and the exciting new addition of Evolve Chocolate + Cafe, Village Books and Paper Dreams remains Bellingham’s place to feed your mind, body and soul,” says co-owner Paul Hanson.

WHATCOM CULTURAL ARTS FESTIVAL & Fairhaven Art Walk

Friday & Saturday, June 22 - 23, 2018 Artists, musicians and performers will gather at the Fairhaven Village Green for Allied Arts of Whatcom County’s new Cultural Arts Festival, June 22-23. Allied Arts is working with organizations throughout Whatcom County to plan the event, which will include booths and performances by cultural organizations. Fairhaven businesses will welcome visitors with special activities. The festival will kick off with the Historic Fairhaven Fourth Friday Art Walk and run throughout the weekend. Acts include Caixa Seattle, performing classic Afro-Brazilian sambas; Millie & The Mentshn, a group of classically trained musicians who play world music; and Swil Kanim, a native storyteller and violinist. Other participants include the Finlandia Foundation, who will showcase traditional wife carrying races and Finnish pastries. The artists of the Morgan Block Studios will open their studios, and visitors can watch them work in a variety of mediums focusing on the techniques and styles of Italy. Village Books will highlight diverse voices in the Chuckanut Writers Conference June 23 open mics hosted at a variety of Fairhaven locations. For a schedule of events, visit alliedarts.org. The Village Idiots Take Second Place What do Renaissance history, banana Twinkies, and Carli Lloyd have in common? They are all answers that contributed to the second place victory of the Village Idiots! At the 22nd annual Whatcom Literacy Council Trivia Bee, which reached its fundraising goal of $30,000, teams competed for glory, honor, and an awesome bee statue. The Village Idiots were represented by Hayden Winn, Kristen Morse, and Sarah Hutton. Village Books is proud to support programming to promote adult literacy programs in Whatcom County. N E H E S R E D E I W AUF goodbye... Erika Set to Retire in August by Stephanie Douglas, Village Books and Paper Dreams

f you have been a regular customer at Paper Dreams over the course of the past 10 years, you are probably very familiar with Erika. A former chocolatier for Chocolate Necessities, you can usually find her on Mondays making vast amounts of fudge while running registers, tidying up the store, and occasionally designing our small window display. Originally from Germany, she loves chatting with tourists who speak her native tongue and her fellow German Club members. Though she is one of the hardest-working employees we have, she fills her free time with dancing, cooking, Zumba, and travelling, and every time I see her she always has a new funny story to share. We have come to depend on Erika’s keen eye and talent for merchandising, and her high standards for even small details encourages us all to live up to her meticulousness. But with her upcoming retirement, it is her energy and spirit that will be the biggest loss. While many people come and go, Erika has stayed all these years not just because she needs a job, but because she cares so much about Paper Dreams and wants to make it the best she can. She has put so much of her heart into her work, and in turn she has taken a place in all of our hearts. Though the swirls on our fudge will never be quite so perfect, and the many scarves never so neatly folded in her absence, we hope for many more years of seeing her as a customer and friend.

n behalf of Village Books and Whatcom Community College, I’m pleased to invite you to the eighth annual Chuckanut Writers Conference, June 22-23, 2018.

This year, Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna and world-renowned writing teacher Natalie Goldberg will deliver keynote addresses. We’ll also welcome to the stage returning faculty members Paula Becker, a memoirist and staff historian for HistoryLink.org, and novelist Jonathan Evison. Claudia Castro Luna first attended the conference several years ago and we are delighted to welcome her to our faculty. “The Chuckanut Writers Conference was very fruitful for me,” Castro Luna recalls. “I thought the workshops were varied and interesting, and I made connections that I have to this day.” Taking place at WCC, our breakout sessions, panel discussions, and keynote addresses promise to inspire writers at all stages of their careers. Whether you write thrillers or prose poems, profile essays or young adult novels, whether you want to learn more about working with editors or teaching writing—you’ll find a schedule packed with opportunities to hone your craft. Optionally, you can register for pre-conference master classes with Kathleen Alcalá, Robert Wilder, and Jane Wong, as well as pitch sessions with literary agents Clelia Gore, Gary Luke, and Elizabeth Wales. Village Books will host a ticketed pre-conference special event, “An Evening with Natalie Goldberg,” on Thursday, June 21, and is one of several Fairhaven venues that will host the postconference open mic series.

MARK TWAIN Returns to Fairhaven In August 1895, Samuel Clemens – better known as Mark Twain – visited Fairhaven. Now, he's back. Or at least his likeness is. Like Fairhaven founder Dirty Dan Harris and community leader J.J. Donovan, a life-sized bronze sculpture of Twain seated on a bench, reading a book, has been installed on 11th Street in front of the bookstore. Donated by local community members Anne and Michael Botwin to the City of Bellingham and Village Books and dedicated at a May 26 ceremony, the bench has space so you can sit awhile with the legendary writer and humorist.

It's MARKET TIME! Bellingham Farmers Market returns to Fairhaven with new hours and a Regional Cookbook and Cooking Lit Book Group

o create a win-win for employees working in the area and residents returning to Fairhaven at the end of the day, the Fairhaven Market will shift from mid-day to 3-7pm every Wednesday in June, July and August. (The Market will not be open July 4.) This year, 11 farms are participating in the Market, providing a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, meat, honey and plants. New this year, Wild Acre Farms will be selling their own farm-fresh chicken in sandwiches as well as rotisserie style for convenient take-home preparation. Other ready-to-eat options include breads, pastries, Indian foods and frozen treats. The Fairhaven Market also features crafters providing local, hand-crafted jewelry, all-natural bath and beauty products, henna tattoos and more. The popular Fresh Local Music series will continue with live music from 4-6pm each week. “Each year, we count the days to the return of the Bellingham Farmers Market to the Fairhaven Village Green,” says Village Books co-owner Paul Hanson. “It’s pretty incredible to walk out Village Books' back door and into the vibrancy of the Wednesday Market. It’s a great amenity for the people who live and work in Fairhaven, but we hope everyone – no matter where they live in Whatcom County – will experience this intimate, welcoming Market this summer.”

Get ’em ready to go! The Puget Sound Antique Tractor & Machinery Association (PSAT&MA) has held an annual threshing bee and tractor show at Berthusen Park on the outskirts of Lynden for 47 years! Also known as Vintage Farming Days, the show includes threshing demonstrations, antique tractors, steam engines, daily parades, steam powered saw mill demonstrations, swap meet, kids candy scramble, tractor pulls, and so much more! The 2018 show features Oliver Tractors as well as Hart-Parr, Cockshutt and Cletrac Tractors.

ave you been rounding it up at Village Books and Paper Dreams? Last year, we launched Round It Up, our amazingly simple giving program to support local nonprofits. Each season, we feature a new partner that will benefit when you choose to Round It Up, increasing your purchase to the nearest dollar. The non-profit will receive the Round It Up difference. Our partner this summer is the Whatcom Humane Society (WHS)! As the oldest non-profit animal welfare organization in Whatcom County (formed in 1902), WHS is an open-admission shelter committed to caring for any animal in need. The dedicated staff and volunteers at the Whatcom Humane Society cared for approximately 5,000 domestic and native wild animals last year. WHS provides animal control and rescue services for Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Sumas, and Everson/Nooksack and has working agreements with the Nooksack and Lummi Indian Reservations. Each day of the week has a specific beloved book as its focus and activities will be inspired by its respective book. Enjoy short writing exercises, playing games, solving mysteries, and fun crafts. This book happily surprised me. With the name Boy Band or Die, I wasn't expecting the smart and intriguing novel that it was. This fast-paced story will take you on a journey with Hutch, a 14-year-old who can't catch a break. After being incarcerated again, Hutch is given an ultimatum, die or become an agent for FATE. After choosing the latter he is sent out to protect Ryu Enomoto, a Future Important Person. YAs will love the twist and turns of this book and won't be able to put it down till they know how everything unfolds. –Sam T. age 17

Against her better judgement, she begins to fall for him. The space setting really adds a lot to the story and I enjoyed all the little nods to the original Jane Eyre. What’s Better than Prom? Photos at Village Books! Ferndale High School seniors Laurel Brinson-Larrabee, Ashlyn Cearns, Mari Nordeen and Emma Olson have known each other since grade school. So they wanted to remember their senior prom with special photos at their favorite bookstore, Village Books. With their OK, we shared their images on Facebook, and, not surprisingly, the beautiful scenes of the young women and their dates in formal wear among the stacks went viral. The post was shared more than 1,000 times, liked by more 1,300 people, and seen by close to 200,000. “We’re passionate about local businesses,” Cearns says. “Books were influential in our childhood, and we thought it would be special to reflect on that.” Despite all the online buzz for their prom-inspired photos, ironically, they didn’t go to the dance. After taking their photos in Fairhaven, they went to a show at The Upfront Theatre.

"Hampden Road is a place of sardine can row houses with spiked hair antennae looking down to sneakers hanging on telephone wires. It’s where Sputnik slowly crawling across the sky dropped cinders on us. Caddys, Chevs, and Fords spun out on curves to scare us kids and impress the chicks. I grew up on Hampden Road, which is a part of me. But so are my ancestors. Grandpa drove a Chevy Wagon, called it his machine, but he never shared his thoughts or what his eyes had seen. And so is history. Crystal sky impales goose-stepping troops with blood-stained feet." BONUS! Sunday, June 10, 4pm KYMBERLY CUMMINGS –Will You Remember Me… Time Shared This book is about the purpose and value of human life. It was born out of Cummings' desire to honor her parents’ lives so she made a book that expresses anecdotes of their time shared together. Originally from Federal Way, Kymberly Cummings has lived in Bellingham for over 30 years. She is a graduate of Western Washington University and taught in the Blaine School District for 27 years. She is currently retired from 30 years of public school service and while working on her writing is also substitute teaching in the Bellingham and Ferndale School Districts.

Respond-ability and the Pause. It's all about slowing down. When confronted we can do more than flight, fight or freeze. As humans we have choice when responding to stimulus (things outside ourselves). We can be reactive — respond by reflex — or we can be proactive and pause — check in with ourselves — before giving our response. Taking deep breaths, counting to 10, trying to figure out what is going on with the other person and with ourselves will benefit us during conversation. Pausing especially when we are in a tense situation or experiencing conflict, but it's also a great way to learn communication in all aspects of our lives. The Naughty Mouse EP has nine slam poems, with illustrations from Graham Sisk and Jeff Otto. It links the beauty of children’s dreams, with the pain Skywalker felt when he found his family blown to smithereens, and the bells built into our personal pleasure machines. Jordan Bubin is a slam poet and teacher based in Phoenix. He hops on microphones as Naughty Mouse to educate, and entertain, and he has floored audiences from Los Angeles to Boston. A graduate of both Princeton and USC Law, he never let schooling get in the way of his education, and his passion is making knowledge accessible and exciting to everyone.

Sign up at our main counter on the first floor or call (360) 671-2626. Village Books is pleased to announce that the emcee mantle for our monthly Open Mics has passed to local author Sean Dwyer. We are grateful to our former host, Andy McBride, and wish him well on his next ventures. A little bit about Sean: Dwyer is the award-winning author of short stories that have appeared in several anthologies and journals. He is the author of a memoir, A Quest for Tears, the story of his recovery from a brain injury. He is a champion of writing in our community and often hosts writing retreats. A native of Gary, Indiana, Sean lives in Bellingham with his wife, his hairless cat, and an assortment of musical instruments.

Friday, July 6, 7pm Poetry! SUSAN CHASE-FOSTER –Xie Xie Taipei After her son, Moshe Foster, moved to Taiwan in the winter of 2005, Susan Chase-Foster began a series of visits during which the pair explored remote areas of the island, as well as the maze of lanes, alleys, mountains, markets, parks and architecture of Taipei, a city of nearly 3 million people, and a million scooters. In Xie Xie Taipei, moments of geographical and cultural discovery are captured in what Susan calls “poemoirs,” and in Moshe’s finely rendered black and white photographs. Susan Chase-Foster travels the world recording observations in poems and watercolor journals. Susan lives joyfully in Bellingham but delights in sauntering through the remarkable island of Taiwan with her son.

Join the audience for the taping of our live radio show featuring monthly interviews with noteworthy authors, live music, fun skits, groaner jokes, performance poetry, and more! This month we're excited to welcome the award-winning author of The Triumph of Seeds and Feathers to the show. Thor Hanson will introduce us to his latest book, Buzz. Bees are like oxygen: ubiquitous, essential, and, for the most part, unseen. While we might overlook them, they lie at the heart of relationships that bind the human and natural worlds. In Buzz, Thor Hanson takes us on a journey that begins 125 million years ago, when a wasp first dared to feed pollen to its young. From honeybees and bumbles to lesser-known diggers, miners, leafcutters, and masons, bees have long been central to our harvests, our mythologies, and our very existence. They’ve given us sweetness and light, the beauty of flowers, and as much as a third of the foodstuffs we eat. And, alarmingly, they are at risk of disappearing. As informative and enchanting as the waggle dance of a honeybee, Buzz shows us why all bees are wonders to celebrate and protect. Read this book and you’ll never overlook them again. Saturday, July 28, 11am JEFFREY COOK What is Steampunk? With four events in the Pacific Northwest, and all of its costumes, books, crafters, music, and so many other aspects, it's safe to say that steampunk has caught on in the region. But what is it? In this presentation author Jeffrey Cook will discuss the history of the genre, its roots in 1960s literature and movies, its predecessors and inspirations, and where some of the modern explosion came from. Author Jeffrey Cook lives in Maple Valley with his wife and three large dogs. He has written sports pieces for the Bellingham Herald and RPG books for Seattle's Deep7 Press, but the Dawn of Steam series were the first of his novels.

For her maverick open-water performance of the 1970s, Diana Nyad was known as the world's greatest long-distance swimmer. For the next 30 years, Nyad was a prominent sports broadcaster and journalist, filing compelling stories for National Public Radio, ABC's Wide World of Sports, and others. She is a national fitness icon, has written three other books, is a talented linguist, and is one of today's most powerful and engaging public speakers.
