Chuck and Dee to be Honored by Bellingham Whatcom Chamber
Man of the Year and Woman of the Year In an unprecedented occurrence the Bellingham Whatcom Chamber of Commerce announced that Village Books and Paper Dreams owners Chuck and Dee Robinson will be honored as Man of the Year and Woman of the Year at the Chamber’s December Annual Awards Banquet at Silver Reef Casino Spa. According to Guy Occhiogrosso, the Chamber’s President and CEO, the honorees are chosen separately and the awards have never before been given to a couple or business partners in the same year. The Man and Woman of the Year are lifetime achievement awards. Recipients are honored based on their contributions to the community in a number of areas including their civic, business, humanitarian, cultural, and educational activities in Whatcom County. Honorees are chosen by a select group of community leaders, including past recipients, members of the chamber board, members of the community, and elected officials. Other honors to be bestowed that evening include Large and Small Business of the Year, Green Business of the Year, and Nonprofit of the Year, among others. Anyone interested in attending may go to the Chamber’s website (bellingham.com) and select “Annual Awards Dinner” under the events tab.

Dear Reader,
It’s amazing to think that this is the 37th year that Village Books in Fairhaven, the 35th year that Paper Dreams in Fairhaven, and the 2nd year that the combined store in Lynden welcomes the community to come choose gifts for the holiday season. No season has been more exciting than this one. We’re especially thrilled to announce a new Chuckanut Editions publication, Nooksack Wanderings. Bob Kandiko is a fabulous photographer who has taken photos along the Nooksack from Mt. Baker to the Bay. This is Chuckanut Editions’ first full-color publication. Check out page 57 for details of events he’ll be doing in both Lynden and Fairhaven. A variety of holiday events in Fairhaven and Lynden are detailed and in addition to many book previews and reviews, you’ll also find individual recommendations from each staff member for a holiday gift. There’s information about post holiday events, including our annual Resolutions and Resolutions for Writers programs for which you’ll find information on page 10, Booked at the Baker Events on page 25; Chuck and Dee’s escorted trip to Amsterdam and Paris on page 33; and much more. We are forever grateful to you, Dear Reader. As we’ve often said, you—and you alone—are our reason for being. Thank You! May you have a blessed holiday season and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

Fairhaven Gives Back
New Date!
RHA VEN FAI
Thursday, November 17th When you’re doing your holiday shopping this year, don’t just pay; pay it forward. That’s the message of Fairhaven Gives Back, an annual event hosted by the Historic Fairhaven Association. Held one week before Thanksgiving this year—on Thursday, November 17th—Fairhaven Gives Back helps holiday shoppers support local businesses as well as their favorite local nonprofits with each purchase they make. It’s a brilliantly simple idea: When shoppers make a purchase at participating Fairhaven businesses or restaurants, 10% of the sale is donated to the nonprofit of the shopper’s choosing from a list of Whatcom charities. Since the event was first launched in 2013, Fairhaven Gives Back has raised more than $5000 for local nonprofits.

by Willie Nelson
CHRISTMAS
available in November, hardcover, Blue Rider Press
For over fifty years, Willie Nelson has wondered about the story of a vendor who sold wrapping paper and supplies on the street in downtown Ft. Worth. This seller of “pretty paper” became the subject of one of country music’s most beloved holiday songs, and now, with a leap of imagination, Willie tells a wonderful tale of who that man might have been. "This engaging holiday musical treat by a country music star will delight all readers, particularly Nelson’s fans." --Library Journal

National Book Award Finalist!
by Paulette Jiles
available now, hardcover, Deckle Edge
Paulette Jiles' spare storytelling in this western reminds me of True Grit. Set in the lawless, post Civil War era, old veteran Captain Kidd earns a living as an itinerant newspaper reader, bringing news of the world to audiences in small towns across the wilds of Texas, charging a dime a head. 10-year-old rebellious Johanna has just been retrieved from the Kiowa, where she had been a captive for years, beloved by her adopted family. Together, this odd couple goes on an adventure and odyssey to restore her family, but find each other instead. A delightful historical western tale. –Cindi

As the past is revealed to the reader and Henry must choose his future, the alternating viewpoints add velocity to this fun, fanciful story that will keep readers guessing until the end. “Harding’s wry debut novel is a winsome tale of an unexpected love triangle late in life.” –Publishers Weekly

The Wangs Vs. the World is an outrageously funny tale about a wealthy Chinese-American family that “loses it all, then takes a healing, uproarious road trip across the United States” (Entertainment Weekly). Their spectacular fall from riches to rags brings the Wangs together in a way money never could. It’s an epic family saga and an entirely fresh look at what it means to belong in America.
A Great Gift... A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
"If you’re a fan of historical fiction, it doesn’t get much better than novels by Towles. In this latest, we experience early 20th century Russia from inside the Metropol Hotel, where our aristocratic prisoner is sent for a lifetime sentence of house arrest." –Dee
The Mothers by Brit Bennett

The buzz for this novel has been growing for months, and with good reason. When ambitious high-schooler Nadia gets pregnant, she is confident in her decision to get an abortion. But the consequences of her choice follow her and her community in ways she could never anticipate. Debut author Brit Bennett handles a complex and controversial issue with grace and honesty. –Stephanie

"One of the most stunning debuts I've ever read. I could feel the searing heat of the Australia setting. Every word is near perfect. Piano Tide

by Kathleen Dean Moore
As a dancer, Mata Hari shocked and delighted audiences as a courtesan. She bewitched the era’s most powerful men. But as paranoia consumed a country at war, her lifestyle brought her under suspicion. In 1917, Mata Hari was arrested in her hotel room and accused of espionage. Told in her voice through her final letter, The Spy is the unforgettable story of a woman who dared to defy convention and who paid the ultimate price.

Conclave
by Robert Harris available in November, hardcover, Knopf
The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, one hundred and eighteen cardinals from all over the globe will cast their votes in the world’s most secretive election. They are holy men. But they have ambition. And they have rivals. Over the next seventy-two hours one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on Earth.
A debut novel by award-winning naturalist, philosopher, activist and author Kathleen Dean Moore. On the shores of the wet, wild rainforests of the Pacific Northwest lies the fictional town of Good River Harbor. Nora, who has figuratively and actually burned bridges in her previous home of Bellingham, WA, has moved to the far reaches of Alaska to start over with her dog and her piano, but finds herself in the middle of a town drama that includes a headstrong Axel, who has made a killing by selling off trees and fish. But when Axel decides to open a business that includes a bear pit, Nora has to act. Full of humans versus nature that includes bitterness, love, survival and of course consequences. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope you will as well. -Kelly E.
Siblings and Other Disappointments by Kait Heacock
available now, paperback, Ooligan Press
Intimations : Stories by Alexandra Kleeman
available now, hardcover, HarperCollins
This collection, when it leans towards the experimental, has a George Saunders vibe, and when more straightfor ward reminds me of Miranda July. There's a sense of claustrophobia, a need to push back against the normalcy we are expected to crave. Kleeman’s stories are not gentle, nor are they meant to be. Look here to be challenged, to be made aware of how precarious our contentment can be. –Stephanie GRAPHIC NOVEL
The Return of the Honey Buzzard
Kait Heacock delves into the vulnerability of relationships and the various ways families fight, forgive, or fall apart. This debut collection of twelve short stories follows a mother waiting for the rapture, newlyweds on a trip to the mountains, a father who competes in food-eating competitions, and an array of other characters scattered throughout Central Washington, Nevada, and Alaska. Each story explores themes of loneliness and isolation and how those exist both apart from our families and within them.
Thank you for your continued support. We wouldn't be here without you!

available now, hardcover, Abrams
Simon has hit hard times. The financial crisis has struck bookstores hard and sales have slumped; his store looks set to close, and he has become increasingly stressed. Returning from his storage facility in the woods, he stops at an isolated railroad crossing, and witnesses a suicide. Already haunted by memories he struggles to repress, Simon withdraws deeper into himself. A beautifully drawn and impressively crafted debut from Aimée de Jongh, this is a compelling, cinematic, and emotionally perceptive graphic novel about confronting the past and starting again.

Auschwitz, 1944. Sisters Stasha and Pearl are together, but imprisoned within Mengele's Zoo. They are chosen for this different type of hell because of their Aryan looks, but more importantly because they are identical twins. Told in alternating perspectives, the experiments and horrors they are subjected to change them in different ways. And when Pearl disappears, Stasha is the only one who believes she is alive. Konar skillfully weaves this beautiful story about sisterhood, love, and hope into the horrific descriptions and events of WWII and what happened to the subjects of Mengele's experiments. It's not one to miss. –Lauren

Margaret Fishback was the most highly paid female advertising copywriter in America during the 1930's. It's true. Now author Kathleen Rooney has brought Margaret back fictionally through her protagonist Lillian Boxfish. The story starts us off on the cold New Years Eve of 1984. Lillian, now 84, has decided to put on her mink coat and go for a walk. As she walks Manhattan and meets various people along the way she thinks about her advertising lifestyle and how the city has changed her over time and how the city itself has changed. Her quest will unveil how Kai, her enigmatic father, a talented pianist, and Ai-Ming’s father, the shy and brilliant composer, Sparrow, were forced to reimagine their artistic and private selves during China’s political campaigns and how their fates reverberate through the years with lasting consequences.

“One sign of a great novel is an ending that seems shocking when you read it but entirely inevitable when you look back over the events of the book . . . Tender and funny . . . Science Fiction A Great Gift...
The Last Days of New Paris
Uprooted
by Naomi Novik "This is a genuinely magical novel for readers of all genres. It's a tale of friendship, enduring love, bigoted mistrust, magic, social hierarchy, revenge, and delicate politics. Reading it feels like stepping into a complex folktale you don't want to end." –Hayden
by China Mieville
available now, hardcover, Del Ray
A Blade of Black Steel by Alex Marshall
available now, hardcover, Orbit Books paperback in January
I loved the first book in this series A Crown for Cold Silver, where a retired warrior queen is forced back into fighting for her realm. This second in the series is just as delightful with lots of action, adventure, adversity, sword and magic play, punctuated with bawdy wit and lots of the use of the 'F' word. But beyond the twisty plot and adventure is the author's wonderful character development and his deft ability to make this story much deeper than just bad guys against good guys. If you like George R. R. Martin, you'll like this. (And fewer people die horribly.) –Jonica
As with many of China Mieville's books, this story almost defies any attempt to define it. How do you explain Surrealism with mere words? How do you discuss the sources of power and art and the manifestation of dreams? This is more than just an adventure story, or a reimagining of the Nazi/Allied struggles during World War II. This is a deeper grappling with the passions and irony of being a living, thinking, creating, person. If you love the wit (and horror) of Dali, Duchamp, Ernst, et al, exquisite corpse drawings, and walking and painted metaphors, you'll love this. If you don't appreciate Surrealism, this will not be an enjoyable read. –Jonica

The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin
available now, paperback, Orbit Books
This book is declared to be a story of post eco-disaster earth, but that just doesn't do it justice. Although set in some distant future after multiple iceage type epochs, human behavior and frailties seem all too familiar. The author has created a complicated story with multiple characters, and slowly teases out the nature of this world, as an impending new era of disaster fast approaches. I loved the characters, and the twisty turns the story takes. But best of all is the narrator's voice—wry and slightly caustic. This is a great story and definitely deserves to be the Hugo Award winner for 2016. –Jonica

It was, improbably, the forerunner of our digital age: a French poem about a shipwreck published in 1897 that, with its mind-bending possibilities of being read up and down, backward and forward, even sideways, launched modernism. Stéphane Mallarmé’s One Toss of the Dice, a daring, twenty-page epic, provided an epochal “tipping point,” defining the spirit of the age and anticipating radical thinkers of the twentieth century. In Bloch’s shimmering portrait of Belle Époque Paris, Mallarmé stands as the spiritual giant of the era, gathering around him a luminous cast of characters including Émile Zola, Victor Hugo, Claude Monet, André Gide, Claude Debussy, Oscar Wilde, and even the future French prime minister Georges Clemenceau.

Thunder at the Gates : The Black Civil War Regiments that Redeemed America
by Douglas R. Egerton
available in November, hardcover, Sentinel
available in November, hardcover, Basic Books
Only weeks after Jefferson’s inauguration in 1801, the Pasha of Tripoli ordered the flagstaff at the American consulate chopped down. It was an act of war, and a personal challenge to Jefferson. He had refused to pay off the pirates who ran Tripoli, and he now had to decide if the fledgling United States would stand up to the kidnapping of American ships and sailors.
A Square Meal :
Soon after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, abolitionists began to call for the creation of black regiments. At first, the South and most of the North responded with outrage— southerners promised to execute any black soldiers captured, while many northerners claimed that blacks lacked the necessary courage. Meanwhile, Massachusetts, long the center of abolitionist fervor, launched one of the greatest experiments in American history. A stirring evocation of this transformative episode, Thunder at the Gates offers a riveting new perspective on the Civil War and its legacy.
A Culinary History of the Great Depression

Mystery meat, casseroles, hobo stew, soup lines, bread lines, and Hoover apples. These humble roots reveal the unique American relationship with food, the American trait of resilience and survival, and the creative, thrifty habits of a generation. Brother can you spare a dime? This is a fascinating book for those who enjoy delving into cultural history. –Cindi

Not your regular ghost story book. I like ghost stories, but the focus here is on the actual locations in question, and how they became notorious for becoming a “haunted” place to begin with. Mr. Dickey’s book is about the relationships between places and the people surrounding them; how oral histories, newspaper accounts, letters, church registries, and headstones often tell the true story. A great history read about some very familiar sites. –Laura O.

Taste of Persia: A Cook's Travels Through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Kurdistan by Naomi Duguid available now, hardcover, Artisan No one gets more authentic than Naomi Duguid. Charles Claassen is the chef/owner of the Book Fare Café on the mezzanine of Village Books. The British Table : A New Look at the Traditional Cooking of England, Scotland, and Wales
by Colman Andrews and Christopher Hirsheimer available in November, hardcover, Abrams
Drawing on a vast number of sources both historical and modern, this book celebrates the best of British cuisine old and new. With more than 150 recipes, from traditional regional specialties to modern gastropub reinventions of rustic fare, these dishes are delicious reminders of the depth and breadth of Britain’s culinary heritage. Some of the finest chefs in England, Scotland, and Wales have contributed forgotten dishes of the past worthy of rediscovery.
Araxi : Roots to Shoots, Farm Fresh Recipes
by James Walt and Andrew Morrison available now, hardcover, Figure 1 Publishing
Gordon Ramsay calls it the best restaurant in Canada. The chefs at Araxi Restaurant and Oyster Bar call it a celebration of where they live. In this follow-up to their James Beardnominated cookbook, award-winning chef James Walt and his team share 80 classic recipes from Araxi’s dining room and signature Longtable events, all adapted for delicious home cooking.
COOKING Mario Batali—Big American Cookbook : 250 Favorite Recipes from Across the USA
by Mario Batali and Jim Webster available now, hardcover, Grand Central Life & Style
Over two years in the making, with Batali searching for truly delicious dishes from all corners of the US, this definitive cookbook features the best America has to offer. While Batali uses recipes passed down through the generations, he also shares hints on what he would add to the recipe to take the flavor up a notch.
Appetites : A Cookbook
by Anthony Bourdain & Laurie Woolever available in November, hardcover, Ecco
Bourdain's first cookbook in ten years, Appetites boils down forty-plus years of cooking and traveling to a tight repertoire of personal favorites—dishes that everyone should (in Bourdain’s opinion) know how to cook. Years of the hyper-organization necessary for a restaurant kitchen however, have caused him, in his words, to have “morphed into a psychotic, anally retentive, bad tempered Ina Garten.”

A Great Gift... Simple Green Smoothies by Jen Hansard & Jadah Sellner
"This fun recipe book features a wide variety of healthy and delicious smoothie, dessert, and snack recipes. With its beautiful pictures and easy to follow recipes, it is a must have for any smoothie lover!" –Asya
An exploration of the surprising origins of our tastes, Bee Wilson draws on the latest research from food psychologists and neuroscientists to reveal that our food habits are shaped by a host of factors: family and culture, memory and gender, hunger and love. Taking the reader on a journey across the globe, Wilson introduces us to people who can only eat foods of a certain color, a nine-year-old anosmia sufferer who has no memory of the flavor of her mother’s cooking, and researchers who have pioneered new ways to persuade children to try new vegetables.

re you an independent traveler who sometimes longs for just a bit more connection in your travels? Do you like socializing with others when abroad, but don't ever want to follow an umbrella? Would you like to get some travel guidance, without having every minute of your vacation pre-planned for you? If you answered yes, the Tale of Two Cities tour may be just the trip for you. It's a tour designed for people who like to walk and use public transportation. VB Owners Dee and Chuck Robinson will lead this trip. For several years, they have led groups to London, Paris, Bruges, and Amsterdam. Our trip will begin June 16 in Amsterdam, where we'll spend five nights. We'll start with a welcome dinner where we'll indulge in Amsterdam's famous Indonesian meal, the rijsttafel. We'll visit some outstanding Amsterdam art museums, tour the city by canal boat, take a walking tour with a local guide, and visit nearby Haarlem by train.
On June 21, we'll take the train to Paris, where we'll stay for six nights. Our first night there is summer solstice, when the city is alive with music on every corner with the Fête de la Musique. Our hotel is in the 7th arrondissement, near the Eiffel Tower and the lovely Rue Cler market street. It's a 5-10 minute walk to our metro stop, but Paris is a very walkable city. We will visit 2-3 museums, enjoy a sunset concert in the awe-inspiring St. Chapelle, visit the famous bookstore, Shakespeare and Company—a bridge and short walk away from Notre Dame Cathedral. Again, we will have walking tours with local guides, visiting literary and artistic Paris. The tour ends after breakfast on June 27 and is limited to 16 travelers. Included in the trip are 11 nights of hotel, breakfast each morning, opening night dinner, train transportation between Amsterdam and Paris, as well as the visits and tours listed above. Cost for the trip is $2900 p/p double occupancy. (Deduct $200 if you have travelled with us before.) Single supplement is available for $600. A $500 deposit holds your place; a second payment of $1000 is due December 1, 2016, at which time the deposit is non-refundable. The final payment is due on March 1, 2017. Make checks payable to Village Books and send them to Village Books, 430 Front Street, Lynden, WA 98264, attention Chuck Robinson. Building Community One Book at a Time
EUROPE
Endlessly Entertaining For Me
by RICK STEVES
I
’m back from nearly five months of European travel (leading tours, researching guidebooks, and filming TV shows) and I’m bursting with practical tips and fun insights. And I’ve just set a date— Monday, February 6th—to share what’s new with my friends at Village Books in Bellingham, as I love to do each winter. When I’m researching guidebooks or leading groups I love to collect Eurekas: Carillon players have one inch callouses on their little fingers after years of playing their church tower glockenspiels (fists on wooden pedals); cityscapes are wide open and clean here as they have no electric wires (they’re under the pavement stones—easy to dig up, fix/replace/augment, and then put the street back together); with an all-day tram pass you can swing like Tarzan on vines through the urban jungle of Amsterdam; of the dozen or so people a year who drown in Amsterdam’s fabled canals, a good portion of them are dredged up with the zippers down—having drunk way too much, staggered over to the canal to relieve themselves…and taken a fatal tumble in the wee hours. With my staff our mantra is “content is king” and we are producing like mad. Even silly little extras, like my new “Rick Steves Europe” playlist on Spotify. For the Best of Europe 21 day tour I recently led, I collected fun and instructive cuts of music, organized them in the order of our “Best of Europe” tour itinerary, posted the playlist named “Rick Steves Europe” on Spotify, and then played them on our big bus to set the mood (you
know, as we cross the “Beautiful Blue Danube” or say “Arrivederci Roma”). If traveling our route (Holland, Germany, Alps, Italy, more Alps, France, and Paris), feel free to use this list to inject some location-specific music into your travel fun. Crowds are a bit down over here as many Americans watch too much fear-mongering commercial TV news and have lost their ability to separate fear and risk. Of course, it’s much safer in Europe statistically than it is in the USA, but what can a travel writer do? Security is certainly tight over here. I’ve been in Siena for the Palio and in Munich for Oktoberfest this year and was thankful that Europe is still wide open (refusing to be kept down by any terrorist threat) and I’m thankful for the comforting presence of military and police guards at obvious soft targets. It let the local crowds of revelers feel relaxed and enjoy the fun. Very recently, while leading a group through Venice it occurred to me how the great joy of guiding and travel writing is to take my travelers’ life-long imaginings, transform them into actual experiences, and then into life-long memories. We shared a family-style feast as Loris served us the seafood bounty of the lagoon with deliciously-grilled local vegetables and polenta. Then, twinkling from our continued on page 45

sprightly Venetian white wine, we wandered through back lanes musty with history, paused on lonely bridges to watch gondolas glide silently by, and then, just a few blocks farther on... This all brought back vivid memories from when, as a very young tour guide, I would bring my groups out of the tangle of back lanes and suddenly onto Piazza San Marco, perhaps the most beloved square in all of Europe, where the age-old glories of Venice still swirl. I watched the wonder sweep over my travelers’ faces...years ago...and again tonight. The sun was down and the lights were on. The crowds were gone and, at the last corner before St. Mark’s, I blitzed ahead so I could turn around and watch every one of my travelers’ expressions as they arrived on the piazza. A “wow” moment, amplified two dozen times. REAL PEOPLE TRUE TALES Born a Crime : Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
Darling Days : A Memoir by iO Tillett Wright
available now, hardcover, Ecco
Wright gives us an emotionally raw, devastatingly powerful tale of gender and identity, freedom and addiction, rebellion and survival in the 1980s and 1990s. “Gender-defying iO Tillett Wright mixes such a high-octane cocktail of radiant ink, wild anecdotes, bad behavior, and gritty truths—topped off with an unexpected tonic of transcendence—it could stagger Charles Dickens, electrify Maxim Gorky, and cause Jane Austen to walk around in army boots.” –Tom Robbins
available in November, hardcover, Spiegel & Grau
Noah was born illegal—the son of a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother, who had to pretend to be his father’s servant in the brief moments when the family came together. His eccentric mother loomed large over his life—a savvy hustler who kept food on their table during rough times, and who was an aggressively involved, often seriously misguided parent who set Noah on his bumpy path to stardom.

Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and, finally, thriving. Now, for the first time, he weighs in on the sources of his creative inspiration and his struggles.

A Life Discarded : 148 Diaries Found in the Trash by Alexander Masters
If you follow Anna Kendrick on social media, you won't be surprised when I say that she is laugh-out-loud funny. In Scrappy Little Nobody, her first book, Anna hilariously recounts memorable moments from her life, before celebrity status and after. She doesn't seem to mind sharing embarrassing tidbits with the world, either. What I love most about this book is that, even though she's famous, she's entirely relatable. I found myself constantly nodding along and thinking, "Can we be best friends now, Anna?" –Lauren
Frantumaglia : A Writer's Journey

by Elena Ferrante and Ann Goldstein
A Life Discarded is a true, shocking, poignant, often hilarious story of an ordinary life. Part thriller, part love story, part social history, it is a biographical detective story that unfolds with the suspense of a mystery.
available in November, hardcover, Europa
Ferrante explains the joys and the struggles of writing and she contemplates her relationship with psychoanalysis, with the cities she has lived in, with motherhood, with feminism, and with her childhood as a storehouse for memories, impressions, and fantasies. The result is a vibrant and intimate self-portrait of a writer at work.
I'm Supposed to Protect You From All This by Nadja Spiegelman
available now, hardcover, Riverhead
This book gave me goosebumps time and time again. Spiegelman traces mother-daughter relationships up through the matriarchal generations of her family through extensive interviews with her mother and grandmother. There is a very real focus on how these women (including the author herself) came to be the way they are, the kind of focus that you can't seem to pull away from. Darkly humorous and highly engaging, this book is a must-read for anyone who likes problematic main characters and competing points of view. –Brenda

Local Music Come See What We Have In Store! by Stephanie Douglas, Village Books Employee & Music Buyer, and member of the local band, The Shows
M
ost of you probably know by now that Village Books is much more than a bookstore. We value community and love supporting local writers, artists, and musicians. Our staff is a talented bunch that dabbles in a wide range of artistic pursuits, and we love when we get to bring our passions and expertise right into the store. As a member of a local band called The Shows, it thrills me that I can sell my music through Village Books, and to give other local musicians the same opportunity. Here's a sampling of what you can find at Village Books: Polecat is a perennial local favorite. This band is so popular we're having trouble keeping their newest release, Into the Wind, in stock! Their blend of genres, including bluegrass, rock, and reggae give them a wide appeal and a truly unique sound. Dana Lyons is a prolific musician, with nine albums including Cows With Guns, which included the hit single of the same name. His newest is called The Great Salish Sea, which aims to raise awareness of the effect of noise and environmental pollution on our coastline. Cabin Fever NW is a trio that dabbles in many musical genres as well. You'll hear influences from Americana, gospel, bluegrass and more in their complex harmonies. String instruments and compelling lyrics round out their vibrant sound. The Shows started out as a lo-fi noise pop band, but over the years they've become more layered and complex. A trio with only drums and guitar for instruments, you won't miss a bassist on their first full-length album Signifier. Stephanie grew up in Anacortes and gradated from WWU with a degree in Creative Writing. She would love to talk to you about candy, weird fiction, short stories, and the local music scene!

Rest : Why You Get More Done When You Work Less by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang
available in December, hardcover, Basic Books
This book by Pang is a close look at structuring your daily time so that you can work smart by working less time, rest smart, and play smart. You've heard the phrase, "all work and no play makes Jane a dull girl?" Active rest makes a good life and a well rested person produces more. By studying the work habits of highly creative and productive people, this author suggests that working fewer, focused hours allows more time to stimulate and sustain creativity by deliberately resting: napping, walking, painting, reading, pondering. Being too busy is not efficient. Are you burned out? Hurrying all the time? Perhaps you are working yourself to exhaustion. –Cindi

The Undoing Project is about the fascinating collaboration between two men who have the dimensions of great literary figures.

Building Community One Book at a Time
Nooksack Wanderings Images From Mount Baker to Bellingham Bay by Brendan Clark, VB Publishing Director
I
'm thrilled to announce the latest release by Village Books' in-house publishing imprint, Chuckanut Editions, which recently brought you Murder in the Fourth Corner, Geology of the San Juan Islands, The Colophon Café Cookbook, and Haunted Fairhaven. This year, we teamed up with local photographer Bob Kandiko to produce Nooksack Wanderings, a full-color photo book dedicated to the natural and human-made environments of the Nooksack River Valley. Starting with breathtaking views of Mount Baker and the river's source, the book continues on through the towns along the river and winds up in Bellingham Bay. For the book's introduction, I asked Bob to reflect on his experience taking pictures while traveling along the river; here's a bit of what he had to say: "Just as the landscape varies as the Nooksack descends to the bay, the people living along the river also change. The communities of Deming, Lynden, Ferndale, and the Lummi Nation contain unique cultures that could normally be found hundreds, if not thousands of miles apart. While living in relatively close proximity, these communities retain and celebrate their historical roots with festivals commemorating their founding fathers and mothers. When Chuck Robinson of Village Books proposed this book project to me I literally jumped at the opportunity to collect images that captured not just the scenic bookends of the Nooksack River at the peaks and the bay, but also to explore places along the Nooksack as it winds its path through northern Whatcom County. For most of this project I traveled by bicycle, which allowed me to appreciate the scenery at a leisurely pace and permitted frequent stops to linger in appreciation of the beauty found in many locations. This project has reaffirmed why I am proud to tell others as I travel that Whatcom County is my home." Bob's book can be found in our northwest section, and I highly recommend it as a gift for anyone with an appreciation of the incredibly picturesque region we live in.

When Nobody Was Watching : My Hard-Fought Journey to the Top of the Soccer World
by Carli Lloyd
Sports
available now, hardcover, Houghton Mifflin
In 2015, the U.S .Women’s National Soccer Team won its first FIFA championship in sixteen years, culminating in an epic final game that electrified soccer fans around the world. It featured a gutsy, brilliant performance by team captain and midfielder Carli Lloyd, who made history that day, scoring a hat trick during the first sixteen minutes. But there was a time when Carli almost quit the sport. In 2003 she was struggling, her soccer career at a crossroads. Then she found a trusted trainer, James Galanis, who saw in Carli a player with talent, skill, and dedication to the game. What Carli lacked were fitness, mental toughness, and character. Together they set to work, training day and night. Despite all the naysayers, the times she was benched, and moments when her self-confidence took a nosedive, she succeeded in becoming one of the best players in the world.

available in November, hardcover, Skyhorse Publishing
One hundred years ago, Sir Ernest Shackleton embarked on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, defying odds and accomplishing one of history’s most remarkable feats of endurance. Less well known, however, is the incredible tale of the Mount Hope Party—six men who worked in the shadow of Shackleton’s greater cause. Sent to the opposite side of the Polar continent, these men dropped life-saving food and fuel across the Great Ice Barrier, ensuring that Shackleton had necessary supplies. Unaware of Shackleton’s own failed task, the party persevered in their mission, facing insurmountable obstacles, risking their lives for the safety of his.

Thus began a journey that would lead to the Bahamas and to David Pinder, a legendary bonefishing guide. by David Arnold
This is just such a beautiful read. The switching narratives, the quirky humor, the mysterious beginning, and the story being told all add up to a great book. I haven't read a YA novel like this in quite some time. Be prepared to laugh (and cry) out loud. This is a coming-of-age romance that truly delivers in every aspect, and I definitely recommend it to the John Green fans out there looking for something more to chew on. –Brenda
The sequel (and ending) to Wolf by Wolf is finally here! We pick up with Yael, the Jewish skin-shifting assassin, right after she failed to kill Hitler, and now she's on the run. Determined to finish her mission, she relies on help from her Axis Tour competitors, Luca Lowe and Felix Wolfe, whose point of views we also get to see in this gripping, page-turner of a book. The three points of view add a new intensity to the plot and make it all the more emotional at the end. Be prepared to shed some tears! –Lauren
A Great Gift... A Wizard of Earthsea

by Ursula K. Le Guin
"Anyone who enjoys Harry Potter will love the original boy-goes-to-wizard-school story. My favorite series of all time; perfect for both kids and adults." –Trevor
A Shadow Bright and Burning
by Kendare Blake
available now, hardcover, HarperTeen
This book is dark. It’s a bloody contest between three young queens, each with their own abilities and allies, to see who will win the throne of their kingdom. The poisoners have held the throne for generations, and the naturalists and elementals all want their shot at the seat, but in order to get it, the sisters must first kill end the others. Only one can win. -Hayley
by Jessica Cluess
available now, hardcover, Random House Books for Young Readers
Henrietta Howel's dangerous gift of bursting into flame can't stay hidden forever. When she is discovered, not only is she not killed for performing witchcraft, she is declared the chosen one and a sorcerer, much to her shock. Whisked away to Victorian era London in order to train with her fellow sorcerers to battle The Ancients and save the world, its clear that something is wrong, though only Henrietta knows what it is: she is not the chosen one. This is an awesome story and I'm a sucker for strong female protagonists, which Henrietta hits head on! Plus, add monsters, magic, and a little love triangle, what's not to love? –Lauren

The Amateurs
Labyrinth Lost
available in November, hardcover, Free Form
available now, hardcover, Sourcebooks Fire
Enticing, thrilling, and mysterious, Sara Shepard’s first installment in The Amateurs series is a novel full of crazy twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat! This book follows the four main characters: Seneca, Brett, Maddy, and Aerin, as they journey through the steps of solving the mystery of Helena Kelly’s disappearance and death. I really enjoyed reading this book, because I have never read anything by Sara Shepard and the way she has the characters interact with one another all throughout the book to solve this crime, makes for a very interesting read. –Amanda M. age 16
Zoraida Córdova’s Labyrinth Lost surprised me in the best way. With its Latin-American traditions and magic, this book stuns. Following a young bruja who hates her magic and just happens to be exceptionally powerful, this book takes the reader on a highly original journey to a fantastical and dangerous land full of intriguing creatures as the bruja tries to save all her family members that she accidentally banished in trying to get rid of her magic. The betrayal, love, diversity, magic, and adventure make this book a must read. –Gretal M. age 17

Saving Hamlet by Molly Booth
available in November, hardcover, Disney-Hyperion
by Zoraida Córdova
Pushing Perfect by Michelle Falkoff
available now, hardcover, Harper Teen
When Emma Allen, stage manager of her school's play, falls through a trapdoor, the last place she expects to land is Shakespeare's Globe Theater. Now caught between present day and 1601, can Emma save two potentially tragic productions of Hamlet before opening night? In a wonderfully fresh debut novel, Molly Booth combines Shakespeare, time travel, drama club drama, and a hint of romance, Saving Hamlet proves that the show must go on. –Emma W. age 20
Pushing Perfect isn't what I expected it to be. A girl with perfect grades and a seemingly perfect life, gradually increasing pressure on her to do well, which, of course, builds up to—oops, spoilers! The novel is so unpredictable that I actually couldn’t put it down. Part of the reason this is so powerful is that the protagonist is never who you think it is, and you never know exactly what’s going on. With a twisty plot and a vibrant, real cast of characters, I would recommend this for any teen reader up for an adventure. –Nich V. age 15
Rose and Thorn
The Sun is Also a Star
by Sarah Prineas
available now, hardcover, Harper Teen
Story is gaining power once more. The evil force aims to weave together a weapon, a princess, and a Witch to create the tale of Sleeping Beauty and take control of the City. Rose is her cursed princess, but she refuses to fall easily to the spindle. Griff has been trained to fight Story with ignorance and coldness, but those traits are used against him when he's chosen as its weapon. The two struggle to trust themselves and each other in the fight against Story while slowly learning that the most powerful weapon they have is their love for each other. An exciting, unpredictable twist to a well-known fairytale, this book is everything I could ask for in a fall fantasy read. –Abby C. age 16

The Sun is Also a Star is thoughtful, heartfelt, and perfect for fans of Eleanor and Park. –Hannah M. age 17

Claire came back to the stores a few years ago and has taken on a myriad of tasks here, most recently heading our inventory consignment area, creating and running our Young Adult Review Committee, and working as our Kids Events manager. She will now schedule and plan all events for the Fairhaven and Lynden stores. Claire has contributed greatly to the stores and we’re thrilled that she’s bringing her talents to this position.

Tuesday, February 21, 7pm JONATHAN WHITE –Tides: The Science & Spirit of the Ocean In Tides, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White takes readers across the globe to discover the science and spirit of ocean tides. In the Arctic, White shimmies under the ice with an Inuit elder to hunt for mussels in the dark cavities left behind at low tide; in China, he races the Silver Dragon, a twenty-five-foot tidal bore that crashes eighty miles up the Qiantang River; in France, he interviews the monks that live in the tide-wrapped monastery of Mont Saint-Michel; in Chile and Scotland, he investigates the growth of tidal power generation; and in Panama and Venice, he delves into how the threat of sea level rise is changing human culture—the very old and very new. Tides combines lyrical prose, colorful adventure travel, and provocative scientific inquiry into the elemental, mysterious paradox that keeps our planet’s waters in constant motion.
