Building Community One Book at a Time

An Invitation... GET HOOKED on FisherPoets by Sierra Golden

bout fishing, I once wrote, “I’m overwhelmed and exhausted by piling gear and shoveling fish, but I’m also too stubborn to say it, so there is nothing but surviving, day after day. I don’t think much about who I am, just wait to see who ends up on the other side of the summer.” What I love about fishing poems: they’re the inverse experience to losing one’s self in fish scales, knots, winches, tidebooks, saltwater, calluses, gales, sunrises, fogbanks, anchor chains, cast iron pans, biscuits and gravy, Xtratufs, raingear, jellyfish, and the god-given blessing of a single long hot shower. Poems mean I get to find out just who ended up on the other side of summer. Come fall, I make sense of this world and my place in it with a wily bunch of FisherPoets on stage in bookshops and bars. And, it’s not just about the individual. There’s a real sense of community. At any FisherPoets event you can expect a warm, welcoming crowd and all kinds of poems: funny poems and sad poems, poems about good years and bad, shenanigans, rabblerousing, feminism, philosophy, and life-changing moments. We’ll mourn our losses, celebrate our victories, and pass wisdom from generation to generation. All in all, this makes for a great show, and so, whether you’re a fisher or not, I hope you’ll join us at SeaFeast 2019! We love telling stories, and like any bunch of performers, we love an audience that hoots, hollers, and sighs at just the right moment.

Sierra Golden is an award-winning poet. Although she calls Washington State home, Golden spent many summers in Alaska, working as a commercial fisherwoman. She now works in communications at Agros International, a nonprofit working to break the cycle of poverty among rural farmers in Central America. Her first poetry collection, The Slow Art, has been nominated for a 2019 Washington State Book Award!

It features explorers charting the Alaskan wilderness in the late 19th century and the endurance that entailed, along with Native American mythology, love, courage and wonder. It’s a thrilling, moody and mysterious tale that we expect you will find a rich and rewarding read. Author Eowyn Ivey is scheduled to visit Whatcom County in March 2020. Events will be free-of-charge and open to the public—watch for details in the months ahead at WhatcomReads.org. Whatcom WRITES Annual Writing Contest

Theme = Discovery Read the book, write on the theme, and enter your work for a chance to be published in the 2020 Whatcom WRITES Anthology. In up to 1,500 words, submit your poem, fiction, or nonfiction work on the theme of discovery due by midnight, October 15, 2019. Winners of the contest will be published in a printed and electronic anthology and invited to read their work at events in both Village Books locations. The Whatcom Literacy Council will host the annual Literacy Breakfast with Nancy Pearl on Thursday, November 7 from 7am-9am at Bellingham Technical College’s Settlemyer Hall and you are invited to join in on the early morning fun. Each year, Whatcom Literacy Council helps hundreds of adults in Whatcom County build their literacy skills through free tutoring and small group classes which help them get jobs and take care of their families. The funds raised at the Annual Literacy Breakfast help make that possible. A $15 registration fee (available via whatcomliteracy.org) is required to reserve a seat. This event typically sells out over a month in advance, so early registration is advised. Because this is a fundraiser for the adult literacy programs offered by the Whatcom Literacy Council, it is expected that guests will make a donation at the event. This year the witty and wonderful Nancy Pearl, NPR commentator and author of Book Lust, More Book Lust, Book Crush, Book Lust To Go and, most recently, the novel George and Lizzie, will return to share her thoughts on some of the best reads available. Village REGISTATION Books will be on hand to sell Nancy’s recommendations. Advance registration of $15 Bonus! Opening remarks will be by Clyde Ford, author of Think Black, a memoir of his father, the first Black software engineer in America. Don't miss out!

ur Round It Up program has been going strong for over two years and we’re elated to share our newest partners, Bellingham Food Bank and Project Hope Food Bank in Lynden! For far too many families in the Whatcom community, hunger is a real and ever-present struggle. Finding enough fresh, healthy, and affordable food is a constant concern from one day to the next. For the last 45 years, the hardworking staff and dedicated volunteers at the Bellingham Food Bank have been working tirelessly to meet the community need for good food. Every week, they pull their efforts together to feed over 3,500 Whatcom county families. In Bellingham alone, more than 1,350 families make a weekly trip to the food bank, and nearly 20 percent of its residents regularly use the food banks' services. Why donate funds? Because the food bank can buy food for a lot less than you and your friends can. They can take

Unity Village is a temporary tiny home community for the homeless in Bellingham and Whatcom County. It is being created in Fairhaven near the Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. HomesNOW! is in the process of building 20 tiny homes to provide a safe place for homeless people to live and keep their belongings while they look for permanent housing. Unity Village will provide access to basic necessities, such as bathrooms, showers, drinking water, and garbage service. HomesNOW! is 100% funded by donations and operated by volunteers and committed to being good neighbors!

At long last, David Guterson is coming back to Village Books to present his book of poetry and we're thrilled. Most outdoor enthusiasts understand the phrase “turn around time” as that point in an adventure when you must cease heading out in order to have enough time to safely return to camp or home—regardless of whether you have reached your destination. For award-winning novelist David Guterson, it is also a metaphor for where we find ourselves in the middle of our lives. His new narrative poem explores this idea through a lyrical journey along a trail, much like those in Washington’s mountain ranges which he hiked while growing up. David Guterson is a bestselling novelist, short story writer, poet, journalist, and essayist. He is best known as the author of the novel Snow Falling on Cedars (1994), which won the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award. Join Chuck and Dee on a Journey to Two of Their Favorite Cities—A msterdam and London !

The tour will begin in Amsterdam on May 10th, 2020. We’ll spend five nights in “Venice of the North,” visiting museums, taking walking and canal tours, and soaking up the history and atmosphere of one of Europe’s most popular cities. Then we’ll take the Eurostar to London where we’ll spend another five nights enjoying much of what the U.K.’s capital city has to offer, including a West End theatre performance and a visit to the Globe Theatre. The tour is limited to 18 people and is ideal for those who like to travel with others, but never want to follow an umbrella. In addition to organized outings there will be plenty of free time to explore personal interests in each city. Travelers should be prepared to walk three to four miles, at times on cobblestones or other uneven surfaces, and to use public transportation.

It is an illness that has been passed down for generations; and continues to infect every one of us and all of our institutions. OCTOBER Wednesday, October 2, 7pm ADRIENNE LINDHOLM –It Happened Like This: A Life in Alaska It Happened Like This is, on the surface, a memoir about what it means to live and love in one of the wildest places on the planet. In an authentic and honest voice, writer Adrienne Lindholm recounts her move to Alaska as a young woman eager to begin her career in environmental and wildlife studies. Lindholm oversees the Wilderness Stewardship Program for the national parks in Alaska. In addition to a memoir about thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, she’s the author of several backpacking guidebooks, and her essays and articles have appeared in a variety of magazines and literary journals. Author Eric Finke worked for the US Environmental Protection Agency investigating environmental crimes, cleaning up environmental waste, and working to prevent further harm for nearly 35 years. He makes his home in the Pacific Northwest town of Bellingham.

Seán Dwyer was driving home to finish editing his novel. A moment later, a car accident left him unable to read, write coherent sentences, or even cry. This memoir of Dwyer’s slow but inspiring recovery will help Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors and their caregivers understand how to cope with healing and change. Seán Dwyer teaches Spanish at Western Washington University and has published a number of short stories. As an advocate for other writers, he hosts the open mic at Village Books. Fiction!
