A Fond Farewell to Carol & Charlie! After over 20 years of keeping the books and paying our bills, Carol Hamilton recently joined the ranks of the happily retired. A true behind-the-scenes hero, Carol is leaving with Charlie, her loyal pup, who spent the past 14 years "working" alongside her in the business office. As they do with all employees who reach the 20 year mark, Village Books and Paper Dreams owners Sarah Hutton, Kelly Evert, and Paul Hanson are giving Carol a trip as a thank you for her many years of service. Wisely, Carol selected Hawaii as her choice destination and will enjoy a beach-filled vacation there this October. Aloha, Carol and Charlie—we miss you!

An Invitation... GET HOOKED on FisherPoets by Sierra Golden

A

bout fishing, I once wrote, “I’m overwhelmed and exhausted by piling gear and shoveling fish, but I’m also too stubborn to say it, so there is nothing but surviving, day after day. I don’t think much about who I am, just wait to see who ends up on the other side of the summer.” What I love about fishing poems: they’re the inverse experience to losing one’s self in fish scales, knots, winches, tidebooks, saltwater, calluses, gales, sunrises, fogbanks, anchor chains, cast iron pans, biscuits and gravy, Xtratufs, raingear, jellyfish, and the god-given blessing of a single long hot shower. Poems mean I get to find out just who ended up on the other side of summer. Come fall, I make sense of this world and my place in it with a wily bunch of FisherPoets on stage in bookshops and bars. And, it’s not just about the individual. There’s a real sense of community. At any FisherPoets event you can expect a warm, welcoming crowd and all kinds of poems: funny poems and sad poems, poems about good years and bad, shenanigans, rabblerousing, feminism, philosophy, and life-changing moments. We’ll mourn our losses, celebrate our victories, and pass wisdom from generation to generation. All in all, this makes for a great show, and so, whether you’re a fisher or not, I hope you’ll join us at SeaFeast 2019! We love telling stories, and like any bunch of performers, we love an audience that hoots, hollers, and sighs at just the right moment.

Sierra Golden is an award-winning poet. Although she calls Washington State home, Golden spent many summers in Alaska, working as a commercial fisherwoman. She now works in communications at Agros International, a nonprofit working to break the cycle of poverty among rural farmers in Central America. Her first poetry collection, The Slow Art, has been nominated for a 2019 Washington State Book Award!

ROUND IT UP for the Bellingham

FOOD BANK

& Project Hope Food Bank

O

ur Round It Up program has been going strong for over two years and we’re elated to share our newest partners, Bellingham Food Bank and Project Hope Food Bank in Lynden! For far too many families in the Whatcom community, hunger is a real and ever-present struggle. Finding enough fresh, healthy, and affordable food is a constant concern from one day to the next. For the last 45 years, the hardworking staff and dedicated volunteers at the Bellingham Food Bank have been working tirelessly to meet the community need for good food. Every week, they pull their efforts together to feed over 3,500 Whatcom county families. In Bellingham alone, more than 1,350 families make a weekly trip to the food bank, and nearly 20 percent of its residents regularly use the food banks' services. Why donate funds? Because the food bank can buy food for a lot less than you and your friends can. They can take

"I never thought I would need to use the food bank to feed my family. Six months ago I had a great job." — New BFB Client

a $100 donation and turn it into 1,000 pounds of food. That’s a good thing for Whatcom County. Bellingham Food Bank partners with and supports food banks throughout Whatcom County, including Project Hope which serves families living within the Lynden School District. Round It Up dontations made in Lynden will go directly to Project Hope Food Bank. In addition to food, these food banks provide a small source of peace of mind. When families are fed, they can focus on being successful in their day-to-day lives.

Round your next purchase up to the nearest dollar and make a difference!

To learn more about their programs and find volunteering opportunities, please visit bellinghamfoodbank.org Meanwhile, we’ll see you in the stores to Round It Up!

Olive, Again

The Water Dancer

available in October, hardcover, Random House

available in September, hardcover, One World

Whether with a teenager coming to terms with the loss of her father; a young woman about to give birth during a hilariously inopportune moment; a nurse who confesses a secret high school crush; or a lawyer who struggles with an inheritance she does not want to accept, the unforgettable Olive will continue to startle us, to move us, and to inspire moments of transcendent grace.

This is a bracingly original vision of the world of slavery, written with the narrative force of a great adventure. Driven by the author’s bold imagination and striking ability to bring readers deep into the interior lives of his brilliantly rendered characters, The Water Dancer is the story of America’s oldest struggle—the struggle to tell the truth—from one of our most exciting thinkers and beautiful writers.

by Elizabeth Strout

Inland

by Téa Obreht available now, hardcover, Random House

Lurie is a former outlaw and a man haunted by ghosts. He sees lost souls who want something from him, and he finds reprieve from their longing in an unexpected relationship that inspires a momentous expedition across the West. Mythical, lyrical, and sweeping in scope, Inland is grounded in true but little-known history. It showcases all of Téa Obreht’s talents as a writer as she subverts and reimagines the myths of the American West.

Cilka’s Journey by Heather Morris

available in October, hardcover, St. Martin’s Press

From the author of the bestseller The Tattooist of Auschwitz comes a new story of heartbreak and healing, based on an incredible true story of love and resilience. Cilka is just 16 years old when she is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1942, where the commandant immediately notices how beautiful she is. Forcibly separated from the other women prisoners, Cilka learns quickly that power, even unwillingly taken, equals survival.

Stay and Fight

by Ta-Nehisi Coates

The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa

available now, hardcover, Pantheon

When a young woman who is struggling to maintain her career as a novelist discovers that her editor is in danger from the Memory Police, a draconian organization that “disappears” personal sentimental objects, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her floorboards. As fear and loss close in around them, they cling to her outstanding memory as the last way of preserving the past.

Out of Darkness, Shining Light by Petina Gappah

available in September, hardcover, Scribner

This is the captivating story of the loyal men and women who carried explorer and missionary Dr. Livingstone's body with his papers and maps, 1500 miles across the continent of Africa, so his remains could be returned home to England and his work preserved there. Narrated by Halima, the doctor's sharp-tongued cook, and Jacob Wainwright, a rigidly pious freed slave, this is a story that encompasses all of the hypocrisy of slavery and colonization—the hypocrisy at the core of the human heart—while celebrating resilience, loyalty, and love.

by Madeline Ffitch

available now, hardcover, Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Absorbingly spun, perfectly voiced, and disruptively political, Madeline Fffitch's Stay and Fight forces us to reimagine an Appalachia—and an America—we think we know. It takes us, laughing and fighting, into a new understanding of what it means to love and to be free. "A Contemporary Feminist Spin on the Traditional Pioneer Novel." –New York Times

This Tender Land

Penelope Speaks

by Luigi Malerba, translated by Douglas Grant Heise available in October, hardcover, University of California Press

After 20 years, Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca, but instead of receiving the homecoming he had hoped for, he finds himself caught in an intense battle of wills with his faithful and long-suffering wife Penelope. In this captivating retelling of The Odyssey, Penelope rises as a major force with whom to be reckoned. Shifting between first-person reflections, Ithaca Forever reveals the deeply personal and powerful perspectives of both wife and husband as they struggle for respect and supremacy within a marriage that has been on hold for 20 years.

Going Dutch

by William Kent Krueger available now, hardcover, Atria

1932, Minnesota—the Lincoln School is a pitiless place where hundreds of Native American children, forcibly separated from their parents, are sent to be educated. It is also home to an orphan named Odie O’Banion. Forced to flee, he and his brother Albert, their best friend Mose, and a girl named Emmy steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippi. Over the course of one unforgettable summer, these four orphans will cross paths with others who are adrift, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds.

The Women of the Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell

by James Gregor

available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

Exhausted by dead-end forays in the gay dating scene, surrounded constantly by friends but deeply lonely in New York City, and drifting into academic abyss, twenty-something graduate student Richard has plenty of sources of anxiety. But at the forefront is his crippling writer’s block, which threatens daily to derail his graduate funding. Enter Anne: his brilliant classmate who offers to “help” Richard write his papers in exchange for his company. What begins as an initially transactional relationship blooms gradually into something more complex.

The Institute by Stephen King

available in September, hardcover, Scribner

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy—who got to this place the same way Luke did.

In July 1913, 25-year-old Annie Clements had seen enough of the world to know that it was unfair. She’s spent her whole life in the copper-mining town of Calumet, Michigan where men risk their lives for meager salaries—and had barely enough to put food on the table and clothes on their backs. The women labor in the houses of the elite and send their husbands and sons deep underground each day, dreading the fateful call of the company man. When Annie decides to stand up for herself, and the entire town of Calumet, nearly everyone believes she may have taken on more than she is prepared to handle.

The Warlow Experiment by Alix Nathan

available now, hardcover, Doubleday

I'm not going to lie. This book is weird and the fact that it's based on an actual ad that the author came across from the 18th century only makes it more fascinating. What kind of person would sign on to live underground for seven years with no human contact, and no chance to leave? It turns out just one person, John Warlow. Herbert Powyss creates this experiment to test how man survives alone, without contact with others and the result is astonishing. This one's dark, folks. So delightfully dark. –Claire

From Bellingham’s own international bestselling author of The Gilded Hour, comes Sara Donati's enthralling epic about two trailblazing female doctors in 19th-century New York. Dr. Sophie Savard, obstetrician and daughter of free people of color, returns home to Washington Square Park in 1884 to resume her life after the death of her husband and childhood love. Awaiting her is her dearest friend and fellow physician Dr. Anna Savard—and also a city whose starved, desperate pleas go unanswered, forsaken by Lady Liberty’s cold copper gaze, drowned out by the dazzling splendor of New York’s Gilded Age. Sara Donati is also the author of the Wilderness series, which includes Into the Wilderness, Dawn on a Distant Shore, Lake in the Clouds, Fire Along the Sky, Queen of Swords, and The Endless Forest.

Reluctantly, Noah brings Michael with him to France on a pilgrimage to piece together clues left about his family during WWII. This is an homage to family, history, and love. –Claire

by Rob Hart

Cloud isn't just a place to work. It's a place to live. And when you're here, you'll never want to leave. "On the surface, The Warehouse is a thrilling story of corporate espionage at the highest level, but dig a little deeper and you'll find a terrifying cautionary tale of the nightmare world we are making for ourselves." --Blake Crouch, New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter.

Who Are You, Calvin Bledsoe?

Agent Running in the Field

available now, hardcover, Algonquin

available in October, hardcover, Viking

Can you imagine John Calvin having a conversation with a gerbil? Our author can. Meet Calvin Bledsoe named for the theologian a pellet stove blogger, divorced from the only other pellet stove blogger in the industry. Travel to Stockholm and beyond with Calvin and his mysterious Aunt (?) Beatrice. I read this book based on its comparison to a Wes Anderson movie alone. I was not disappointed. –Diana

Set in London in 2018, Agent Running in the Field follows a solitary figure who, in a desperate attempt to resist the political turbulence swirling around him, makes connections that will take him down a dangerous path. In his plot and characterization, le Carré is as thrilling as ever, and in the way he writes about our times he proves himself, once again, to be the greatest chronicler of our age.

Virgil Wander by Leif Enger

A Ladder to the Sky

available now, paperback, Grove Press

by John Boyne

The first novel in ten years from author Leif Enger, Virgil Wander is a sweeping story of new beginnings against all odds that follows the inhabitants of a hard luck town in their quest to revive its heart. Carried aloft by quotidian pleasures of kite-flying, movies, fishing, baseball, necking in parked cars and falling in love, Virgil Wander is a swift, full journey into the heart and heartache of an often overlooked upper Midwest.

available now, paperback, Hogarth Press

Oooh boy, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Maurice Swift is a fascinating and downright villainous character; I could not stop reading until the very end to find out what else this dastardly man would do to get a story. Boyne's scarily plausible tale had me gasping aloud at times, and I bet you might, too. –Lauren

Bramber also appreciates dolls and they strike up a correspondence, he from his home and she from the mental hospital where she has lived for the last 20 years. Andrew decides to rescue her and begins a road trip like no other. Peppered throughout this tale are the stories of their shared favorite author and doll-maker, Ewa Chaplin. Remember Daphne du Maurier's Don't Look Now? This one reminds me of that classic. –Claire

From the gilded ballrooms of Imperial Vienna to the frozen forests of the Eastern Front, The Winter Soldier is the story of war and medicine, of family, of finding love in the sweeping tides of history, and finally, of the mistakes we make, and the precious opportunities to atone. "A dream of a novel... Part mystery, part war story, part romance." --Anthony Doerr, author of All the Light We Cannot See

Be still and feel the seasons changing. Make room for another. Consider an animal's perspective. Ponder our water supply. Turn Around Time

A Walking Poem for the Pacific Northwest

MEET THE AUTHOR!

At long last, David Guterson is coming back to Village Books to present his book of poetry and we're thrilled. Most outdoor enthusiasts understand the phrase “turn around time” as that point in an adventure when you must cease heading out in order to have enough time to safely return to camp or home—regardless of whether you have reached your destination. For award-winning novelist David Guterson, it is also a metaphor for where we find ourselves in the middle of our lives. His new narrative poem explores this idea through a lyrical journey along a trail, much like those in Washington’s mountain ranges which he hiked while growing up. David Guterson is a bestselling novelist, short story writer, poet, journalist, and essayist. He is best known as the author of the novel Snow Falling on Cedars (1994), which won the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award. This event is part of the Nature of Writing Series run in partnership with the North Cascades Institute.

We want to eat in healthy and just ways. Is there a right way to eat, or is eating a product of our beliefs? Is food a language? If so, what does it say? Food invites interaction. Adria Libolt's new book suggests that our hunger for food is a longing for goodness. Food: An Appetite for Life is a collection of humorous experiences and reflective essays illustrating how hunger for food is part of a longing for abundance and goodness of life. "Who I am and how I approach the subject of food is deeply rooted in the far corner of northwest Washington State in a land of dairy farms and berry fields, where for the month of August one could live off the profusion of wild black berries. I grew up on a small dairy farm with a mother who often milked the cows, made pies for Sunday and a dad who made fishing a high priority when he wasn’t working. Out of such abundance grew my love for food and a hunger for life." ~Adria Libolt

Karl Marlantes Tuesday, September 24

–Deep River: A Novel Karl Marlantes’s debut novel Matterhorn has been hailed as a modern classic of war literature. In his new novel, Deep River, Marlantes turns to another mode of storytelling—the family epic—to craft a stunningly expansive narrative of human suffering, courage, and reinvention. This tale of Finnish immigrants who settle and tame the Pacific Northwest, is an ambitious and timely exploration of the place of the individual, and of the immigrant, in an America still in the process of defining its own identity. On Fire : The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal

by Naomi Klein

available in September, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

For more than 20 years, Naomi Klein has been the foremost chronicler of the economic war waged on both people and planet—and an unapologetic champion of a sweeping environmental agenda with justice at its center. In lucid, elegant dispatches from the frontlines of contemporary natural disaster, she pens surging, indispensable essays for a wide public: prescient advisories and dire warnings of what future awaits us if we refuse to act, as well as hopeful glimpses of a far better future.

Whose Story Is This? Old Conflicts, New Chapters by Rebecca Solnit

available in September, paperback, Haymarket Books

Who gets to shape the narrative of our times? The current moment is a battle royale over that foundational power, one in which women, people of color, nonstraight people are telling other versions, and white people and men and particularly white men are trying to hang onto the old versions and their own centrality. In Whose Story Is This? Rebecca Solnit appraises what's emerging and why it matters and what the obstacles are.

Inconspicuous Consumption :

The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have by Tatiana Schlossberg

available now, hardcover, Grand Central Publishing

Cataloging the complexities and frustrations of our carbon-intensive society with a dry sense of humor, Schlossberg makes the climate crisis and its solutions interesting and relevant to everyone who cares, even a little, about the planet. She empowers readers to think about their stuff and the environment in a new way, helping them make more informed choices when it comes to the future of our world.

available now, hardcover, The New Press

Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues reimagines what education might look like if schools placed the flourishing of Black and Brown girls at their center. Grounding each chapter in interviews, case studies, and testimonies of educators who work successfully with girls of color, Morris blends research with real life to offer a radiant manifesto on moving away from punishment, trauma, and discrimination toward safety, justice, and genuine community in our schools.

Blowout : Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth by Rachel Maddow

available in October, hardcover, Crown

With her trademark dark humor, Maddow reveals the greed and incompetence of Big Oil and Gas and draws a surprising conclusion about how and why the Russian government hacked the 2016 U.S. election. She deftly shows how Russia’s rich reserves of crude have, paradoxically, stunted its growth, forcing Putin to maintain his power by spreading Russia’s rot into its rivals, its neighbors, the West’s most important alliances, and the United States.

POLITICS &

CURRENT EVENTS

The Problem with Everything : My Journey Through the New Culture Wars by Meghan Daum

available in October, hardcover, Gallery 9

In this gripping new work, Daum examines our country’s most intractable problems with clear-eyed honesty instead of exaggerated outrage. With passion, humor, and most importantly nuance, she tries to make sense of the current landscape—from Donald Trump’s presidency to the #MeToo movement and beyond. In the process, she wades into the waters of identity politics and intersectionality, thinks deeply about the gender wage gap, and tests a theory about the divide between Gen Xers and millennials.

Our Women on the Ground :

Essays by Arab Women Reporting from the Arab World by Zahra Hankir

available now, paperback, Penguin Books

In Our Women on the Ground, 19 of these women tell us, in their own words, about what it’s like to report on conflicts that (quite literally) hit close to home. Their daring and heartfelt stories, told here for the first time, shatter stereotypes about the region’s women and provide an urgently needed perspective on a part of the world that is frequently misunderstood.

How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

How to Start a Revolution : Young People and the Future of American Politics by Lauren Duca

available in September, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

A columnist at Teen Vogue, Lauren Duca has become a fresh and authoritative voice on the experience of millennials in today’s society. Duca investigates and explains the issues at the root of our ailing political system and reimagines what an equitable democracy would look like. It begins with young people getting involved—people like Alexandria OcasioCortez, the youngest woman ever to be elected to Congress; David and Lauren Hogg, two survivors of the Parkland, Florida shooting who went on to become advocates for gun control; Amanda Litman, who founded the nonprofit organization Run For Something, to assist progressive young people in downballot elections; and many more.

Represent : The Woman’s Guide to Running for Office and Changing the World

by June Diane Raphael and Kate Black available in September, paperback, Workman

A comprehensive, lively, interactive woman's guide to running for office that comes with a sense of humor and of style. Practical, how-to text is combined with elements of a workbook/planner to inspire potential female candidates, whether they're running for office on the local, state, or national level (from school board to senator). “Over the last few years we’ve seen a remarkable surge of women running for office, and even better, winning. Running takes courage, passion, and commitment, but it also takes books like this. June and Kate have created a wonderful resource for women as they think about taking the leap.”—Hillary Rodham Clinton

So You Want to Talk About Race

available now, hardcover, One World

by Ijeoma Oluo

In this book, Kendi weaves an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science, bringing it all together with an engaging personal narrative of his own awakening to antiracism. How to Be an Antiracist is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond an awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a truly just and equitable society.

In So You Want to Talk About Race, Ijeoma Oluo guides readers of all races through subjects ranging from intersectionality and affirmative action to "model minorities" in an attempt to make the seemingly impossible possible: honest conversations about race and racism, and how they infect almost every aspect of American life.

Historical Island of the Lost : An Extraordinary Story of Survival at the Edge of the World

The Bastard Brigade :

by Joan Druett

available now, paperback, Alqonquin

It is 1864, and Captain Musgrave’s schooner, the Grafton, has just wrecked on Auckland Island, a forbidding piece of land 285 miles south of New Zealand. Battered by year-round freezing rain and constant winds, it is one of the most inhospitable places on earth. Incredibly, at the same time on the opposite end of the island, another ship runs aground during a storm. Separated by only twenty miles and the island’s treacherous, impassable cliffs, the crews of the Grafton and the Invercauld face the same fate, but they respond very differently. Using the survivors’ journals and historical records, award-winning maritime historian Joan Druett brings to life this extraordinary untold story about leadership and the fine line between order and chaos.

The True Story of the Renegade Scientists and Spies Who Sabotaged the Nazi Atomic Bomb

by Sam Kean

available now, hardcover, Little, Brown, and Company

Two weeks after the beginning of World War II the German military summoned eight physicists and chemists to a secret conference in Berlin to begin a project to develop an atomic bomb. Belatedly, the Allies realized that the Axis had a two year start on that vital arms race, and sabotaging the German progress became as important or more than the Allied Manhattan Project. This book is a non-fiction nail-biter. –Mel

Threads of Life : A History of the World Through the Eye of a Needle

by Clare Hunter

available in October, hardcover, Abrams Press

Threads of Life is a chronicle of identity, protest, memory, power, and politics told through the stories of needlework. Clare Hunter, master of the craft, threads her own narrative as she takes us over centuries and across continents—from medieval France to contemporary Mexico and the United States, and from a POW camp in Singapore to a family attic in Scotland—to celebrate the age-old, universal, and underexplored beauty and power of sewing.

Metaphysical The Ghost : A Cultural History by Susan Owens

available now, paperback, Tate Publishing

The enduring popularity of ghosts in literature, art, folklore, and film attests to their continuing power to fascinate, terrify, and inspire. Our conceptions of ghosts— the fears they provoke, the forms they take—are connected to the conventions and beliefs of each particular era, from the marauding undead of the Middle Ages to the psychologically charged presences of our own age.

Unbreakable : The Woman Who Defied the Nazis in the World’s Most Dangerous Horse Race by Richard Askwith

available now, hardcover, Pegasus Books

Notoriously dangerous, the Czechoslovakian Grand Pardubice steeplechase is considered the ultimate test of manhood and fighting spirit. In 1937, the Nazis have sent their paramilitary elite—SS officers on a mission to crush the “subhuman Slavs." The local Czech cavalry officers have no hope of stopping them. But there is one other contestant in the race: a countess riding a little golden mare. Filled with eccentric aristocrats, socialite spies, daredevil jockeys—and a race so brutal that some consider merely taking part in it a sign of insanity, Unbreakable brings to life a unique hero.

Katie Gale : A Coast Salish Woman’s Life on Oyster Bay by Llyn de Danaan

available now, paperback, Bison Books

Katie Kettle Gale was born into a Salish community in Puget Sound in the 1850s, just as settlers were migrating into what would become Washington State. With her people forced out of their traditional hunting and fishing grounds into illprovisioned camps and reservations, Gale sought her fortune in Oyster Bay. In that early outpost of multiculturalism—where Native Americans and immigrants from the eastern United States, Europe, and Asia vied for economic, social, political, and legal power—a woman like Gale could make her way.

In the Country of Women :

Women in History No Stopping Us Now : A History of Older Women in America

by Gail Collins

available in October, hardcover, Little, Brown and Company

Acclaimed columnist Gail Collins illustrates the ways in which age is an arbitrary concept that has swung back and forth over the centuries. From Plymouth Rock when a woman was considered marriageable if "civil and under fifty years of age" to the first female nominee for president, American attitudes towards age have been a moving target. Collins gives women reason to expect the best of their golden years.

Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister : Three Women at the Heart of Twentieth-Century China

by Jung Chang

available in October, hardcover, Knopf

One of the best-known modern Chinese fairy tales is based on the story of three real-life sisters from Shanghai. It was sometimes said that “One loved money, one loved power and one loved her country,” but there was far more to the Soong sisters than these caricatures. As China battled through a hundred years of wars, revolutions and seismic transformations, each sister played an important, sometimes critical role, and left an indelible mark on history.

A Memoir

by Susan Straight available now, hardcover, Catapult

"Straight's In the Country of Women is an American epic about what the United States could be and in fact already is for so many people like those of her extended family. Straight's kin—by blood and by choice—embody the complicated, painful history of this country and its tremendous, hopeful diversity. This is an enriching, inspiring, and moving account of how a writer chose her family and her destiny." —Viet Thanh Nguyen, author of The Sympathizer

TIMOTHY EGAN at Bellingham High School

Friday, November 1, 7pm

A Pilgrimage to Eternity From Canterbury to Rome in Search of Faith At a time when America and Europe have never been so secular—and when his mother’s death and his Catholic family’s history with the church prompted a reckoning with his own beliefs— Pulitzer prize-winning author Timothy Egan decided to follow in the footsteps of centuries of seekers. He embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage through the cradle of Christianity, to explore one of the biggest stories of our time: the collapse of religion in the world that it created. Egan sets out along the Via Francigena, once the major medieval trail leading the devout to Rome, and makes his way overland via the alpine peaks and small mountain towns of France, Switzerland and Italy. The goal: walking to St. Peter's Square, in hopes of meeting the galvanizing pope who is struggling to hold together the church through the worst crisis in half a millennium. Join us as we welcome National Book Award-winning author Timothy Egan back to Bellingham as he shares this thrilling journey, family story, and a revealing history and peek at the future of Christian faith. Tickets are available at Village Books or online at Eventbrite.com. Choose from two ticket options: $35 admits one person and includes a hardcover copy of A Pilgrimage to Eternity OR $45 admits two people and one hardcover copy of A Pilgrimage to Eternity. The Pretty One : On Life, Pop Culture, Disability, and Other Reasons to Fall in Love with Me by Keah Brown

available now, paperback, Atria

Keah Brown loves herself, but that hadn’t always been the case. Born with cerebral palsy, her greatest desire used to be normalcy and refuge from the steady stream of self-hate society strengthened inside her. But after years of introspection and reaching out to others in her community, she has reclaimed herself and changed her perspective. In The Pretty One, Brown gives a contemporary and relatable voice to the disabled, exploring everything from her relationship with her able-bodied identical twin (called “the pretty one” by friends) to navigating romance, her deep affinity for all things pop culture—and her disappointment with the media’s distorted view of disability.

Motherhood So White : A Memoir of Race, Gender, and Parenting in America

by Nefertiti Austin

available in September, hardcover, Sourcebooks

When Nefertiti Austin decided to adopt a black baby as a single black woman, she realized that she was seen as an anomaly, that virtually no narratives existed of her experience. So she wrote this book, a trailblazing manifesto on the ups and downs of following your heart no matter what the world says. Through sheer love and determination, she became a mother and a role model for anyone who wants to follow in her path. –Stephanie

available in September, hardcover, Atria

Eyes to the Wind is a rousing memoir featuring intertwining storylines about determination, perseverance, and how to live a life filled with purpose and intention. The first traces Barkan’s battle with ALS: how he turned the initial shock and panic from his diagnosis into a renewed commitment to social justice—not despite his disability but because of it. The second, told in flashbacks, illustrates Barkan’s journey from a political nerd to a prominent figure in the enduring fight for equity and justice who is “willing to give [his] last breath to save our democracy” (CNN).

Womack focuses on the dynamics between John, Paul, George, Ringo, producer George Martin, and his team of engineers, who set aside (for the most part) the tensions and conflicts that had arisen on previous albums to create a work with an innovative, and controversial, studiobound sound.

Erosion : Essays of Undoing by Terry Tempest Williams

available in October, hardcover, Sarah Crichton Books

Buzz : The Nature and Necessity of Bees

by Thor Hanson

available in September, paperback, Basic Books

The award-winning author of The Triumph of Seeds and Feathers presents a natural and cultural history of bees: the buzzing wee beasties that make the world go round. As informative and enchanting as the waggle dance of a honeybee, Buzz shows us why all bees are wonders to celebrate and protect. Read this book and you'll never overlook them again.

Fierce, timely, and unsettling essays from an important and beloved conservationist and one of our staunchest and most impassioned defenders of public lands. A naturalist, a fervent activist, and a skilled and stirring writer, she has spoken to us, and for us, again and again her in books. In this latest collection of essays, Williams explores the concept of erosion: of the land, of the self, of belief, of fear. She is overwhelmed and exhausted by the current state of American politics, the dire environmental implications of the current administration’s choices, and the drought she sees outside her door and feels within herself.

Juliet Takes a Breath

available in September, hardcover, Putnam

available in September, hardcover, Dial Books

by David Yoon

There has been so much buzz around this book and after reading it, I understand why. David Yoon captures teen angst perfectly as two KoreanAmericans fake-date each other so that their parents won't find out about their real non-Korean girlfriend/boyfriend. Yoon is so funny I was laughing out loud throughout, but here's the kicker; he can also write about the heart. About realizing the sacrifices our parents make for us out of pure love. I alternately laughed and cried my way through this book and it was great. –Claire

I’m Not Dying With You Tonight

I’m always on the lookout for YA books that can spark the conversations I want to see in a younger audience, and I’m excited to announce that I’m Not Dying With You Tonight is a perfect addition to their shelves. Moving quickly from one fraught situation (sudden violence erupting at a Friday night football game) to the next (Campbell and Lena, a white girl and a black girl who aren’t friends, forced to stick together to find a safe path home), I’m Not Dying With You Tonight will sweep you up and inspire deep thought about race, violence, and safety at any age. –Nich V. age 18

Containment : A Sanctuary Novel by Caryn Lix

available now, hardcover, Simon Pulse

Containment is a continuation of a thrilling story-line that tells of Kenzie's journey beyond the Sanctuary. Kenzie and her friends must race against the clock to destroy an alien ship and to prevent its beacon from calling an entire race of aliens from invading. The protagonist knows that the aliens will show no mercy to those who stand in their way, and must work together with her friends to cope with the evolution of their powers and to prevent the destruction of all they hold dear. With its endearing characters and exciting plot twists, this book was a great read and I would recommend it to all. –Noah G. age 17

Destroy All Monsters by Sam J. Miller

available now, hardcover, Harper Teen

Sam J. Miller has done it again. Destroy All Monsters is a return to Miller’s signature style: a gritty puzzlebox of a novel that asks us to rethink the way we see difficult issues like child abuse and PTSD as the main characters battle the monsters inside them as well as the ones they share space with, both formidable and very real. Miller writes with wisdom and magic, and, while hard to confront at times, Destroy All Monsters is a book that you’ll enjoy figuring out as the story unravels. –Nich V. age 18

I Hope You Get This Message is the story of what would happen if Earth was just an alien experiment, and the aliens were deciding if humanity was worth saving. After Earth decodes a message that confirms the world could be ending in a week, everything falls into chaos. The story follows three teens, Jesse, Cate and Adeem, all trying to find something during their last week on Earth. This was a beautifully heartbreaking book filled with both loss and also hope for the future. I would recommend this to anyone looking for the good of Community humanity in uncertainBuilding times. –Sarah K. ageOne 17 Book at a Time

Disruptive Play: The Trickster in Politics and Culture journeys from ancient folkloric appearances of Tricksters such as Raven and Èsù-Elegba, to their confined role in Western civilization, and then on to Trickster’s 20th century jailbreak as led by dada and the hippies. Disruptive Play bears witness to how this spirit informs social progress today, whether by Anonymous, Banksy, Bugs Bunny, or unrevealed mischief-makers and culture jammers. Such play is revolutionary and lights the path to a transformed society. Dr. Shepherd Siegel is a writer, a rock and jazz musician, and educator. He returned to his countercultural roots to write Disruptive Play and spread its message of playfulness and progressive change.
