Summer 2022
Building Community One Book at a Time
Dear Reader, "The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is 42." So we have been told by Douglas Adams, and here we are, celebrating year 42 at Village Books. So maybe the universe is telling us something for this summer. A little antigravitational levity may be due to us, it's summer, don't panic — time to play! Romance books are packing themselves onto the shelves, as are books and guides celebrating the nature of the northwest. Games and puzzles are also cosmically popular as we sit down to play with friends, neighbors, and family during the long evenings. Our ever popular summer camp for youth will be back so this must mean the planets are aligning in our favor. We wish you and yours a happy and safe summer with wherever your adventures take you, but remember, "you've got to know where your towel is."

Village Books & Paper Dreams Owner & Gift Buyer Kelly Evert Shares Her Top Picks for the Season “I’ d like to do just whatever I like the whole day long.”
–Audrey Hepburn, Roman Holiday
It seems as if we've waited a long time for summer this year. We deserve some days of fun, relaxation, and play. I sure remember non-scheduled summer days – outside all day, playing until twilight when mom called us back in. Before cell phones (this was only possible on Star Trek) and computers, adventure, and imagination were all we needed. And like Audrey Hepburn’s character in Roman Holiday, we all need a scooter ride every once in a while. Feel the wind and the freedom in our face. This summer we have the most adorable scooters for little ones. The PRIMO ride-on toy is the ultimate scooter for kids. It is a combination of a classic Italian design, with fine handmade craftsmanship to create a timeless ride for toddlers. It has durable double back wheels for stability. Time to roll! And once you have rolled into the perfect spot for a picnic it is food and drink time. Whether you find your picnic spot at Boulevard Park, Lake Padden, or up at Mt. Baker, having your food make it there is extremely important. Dutch made Mepal are food storage heroes! That salad and those delicately picked berries will be safe and sound in these containers. Each Mepal container and bento box are BPA free, microwave and dishwasher safe. Deciding on which modern color to take on your adventure will be the most difficult task.

The Children on the Hill
Big Girl
available now, hardcover, Simon and Schuster
available in July, hardcover, Liveright
This is the first book by Jennifer McMahon that I have read, I'll definitely be seeking out her previous novels! This suspenseful story is told in alternating timelines, covering childhood dreams and nightmares, the importance of family, the dangers of playing God, and the consequences of doing so. This was by far, one of the best psychological thrillers I have read. I really enjoyed this modern take on a classic monster book. –Erica
Growing up in a rapidly changing Harlem, eight-year-old Malaya hates when her mother drags her to Weight Watchers meetings; she’d rather paint alone in her bedroom or enjoy forbidden street foods with her father. This novel centers around Lexington, one of the greatest American racehorses, and Jarret, the slave who was his devoted companion and trainer. Based on truth but crafted into a beautiful story, Horse takes us from pre-Civil War to the present day when the skeleton of Lexington is found languishing in storage at the Smithsonian and restored. I loved this book. –Claire
Either/Or
by Elif Batuman available now, hardcover, Penguin Press
It’s sophomore year, 1996, and Selin knows she has to make it count. The first order of business: to figure out the meaning of everything that happened over the summer. Why did Selin’s elusive crush, Ivan, find her that job in the Hungarian countryside? Why is Ivan’s weird exgirlfriend now trying to get in touch with Selin? On the plus side, it feels like the plot of an exciting novel. On the other hand, why do so many novels have crazy abandoned women in them?
available in July, hardcover, HarperCollins
A sweeping tale about marriage, freedom, identity, and motherhood, The Falcon’s Eyes not only illuminates a brilliant century and the notorious queen who dominated it, but also brings to life the characters whom the heroine encounters on her journey to selfhood. The various settings — Château Ravinour, Fontevraud Abbey, and Queen Eleanor’s exiled court in England — are depicted as memorably as the noblewomen, nuns, servants, falconers, and courtiers who inhabit them. With a series of twists and turns, the story pulses forward as Isabelle confronts one challenge, one danger, after another, until it hurtles to its final, enthralling, page.

Would you choose to find out the length of your life? One spring day, small wooden boxes arrive for every person, all over the world, from suburban doorsteps to desert tents. All the boxes feature the same inscription, “The measure of your life lies within,” and vary in only two ways: the name of the recipient and the length of the single string inside. Instantly, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy, first to ascertain their origin and meaning, and then to confront the truth of the strings. The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious meditation on life, family, and society that challenges us to consider the best way to live life to the fullest.

Let me introduce my new favorite 'feelgood' book of the year. Marcellus the octopus is quite possibly the best character I have ever encountered, he left my heart so full. The plot moves and develops cleverly, which kept me interested the whole way through. Plus, it takes place in the Snohomish and Bellingham area! So fun! –Kiana An absolutely wonderful book! Told by Tova, a woman who works the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, and by Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Tova needs a friend and Marcellus is just the octopus for her. Marcellus needs someone to wash the fingerprints off his tank, and Tova is just the human for him. Their relationship is one to envy. From summer read on holiday, to book-clubs, this is one of those books that everyone will enjoy. –Kelly E.

Wow, what an incredible book. There were so many layers in this book it was like peeling a never-ending onion. The characters of the triplets were each so different and fun to follow as they journeyed out separately into the world. The plot was so well thought out with pieces being carried through from exposition to epilogue, evolving the whole way. This is my favorite Korelitz book by far! –Kiana

The Mermaid of Black Conch
by Gabrielle Zevin
available in July, hardcover, Knopf
by Monique Roffey
available in July, hardcover, Knopf
Aycayia must relearn what it is to be human, navigating not only her new body but also her relationship with others on the island, a difficult task after centuries of loneliness. As David and Aycayia grow to love each other, they juggle both the joys and dangers of life on shore. But will the former mermaid be able to escape her curse? Taking on many points of view, this mythical adventure tells the story of one woman’s return to land, her healing, and her survival.
Gabrielle Zevin, writer of the superb The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, once again voices the fragility of love and the enduring nature of friendship. I was immediately drawn in to the book, and bonded with each of these characters as they told their tale. The book swings between past and present, trading vignettes around two sad and lonely childhoods, and blossoming with time into a deep love steeped in understanding. There are fall-outs, and successes, and everything in between. I want to read this again. And again. –Erin

This time, the cast of oddballs includes Ole Mbatian Jr., a Maasai warrior; Kevin, his sortof-son; Agneta, a wronged and penniless ex-wife; Johan, an unscrupulous Stockholm ad-man whose company specializes in revenge services; a goat called Molly; and the Pope. Jonasson's unique worldview is presented through a fresh, funny new angle as he takes on the evergreen ills of capitalism and colonialism.

The Many Daughters of Afong Moy by Jamie Ford
available in June, hardcover, Atria Publishing
Jamie Ford, author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, has written another beautiful book about the relationship between mothers and daughters shifting throughout time. Epigenetic inheritance, the pain that follows one generation to another is as real as is healing and hope. A great book for book clubs. –Kelly E.

So begins the war between Joaquín Alboroto, the most powerful drug lord on the planet, and his most hated enemy: the city of New York. "Talk about your killer snowstorm. Don't flake out, but Marshall Karp has written one stonecold mystery!" - Al Roker

The Final Revival of Opal and Nev by Dawnie Walton
available now, paperback, 37 Ink
Is music fiction a genre? If not, it should be, and this would be a great example. It’s about the rise and fall and maybe rise again, of 70’s punk duo Opal and Nev, an unlikely pair whose career barely got off the ground before it crashed at a concert-turned-riot. When Opal disrespects a Confederate flag belonging to another band, chaos ensues. It’s a story about race, friendship, authenticity, and above all, music. Thank you Nancy Pearl for this recommendation! –Claire

When I met this author, she had real cool shoes on and was carrying a serinette (please do Google that one). With these two insights, I knew this was going to be a book that was going to take me on a journey, and sure enough, it did. Set in early 19th century and taking the reader to a different world of mechanical music makers, it was not only a book that gave a story, I also learned a lot of history. This is a lovely book, with luscious writing just perfect for a summer day. –Kelly E.

Ordinary Monsters by J. M. Miro
available in June, hardcover, Girl Friday Books
I confess, any book of fantasy that has a raven on the cover will entice me to pick it up. Imagine my delight when I found that the story within both defied and surpassed my high expectations. In Victorian London, two children with mysterious powers are hunted by a figure of darkness—a man made of smoke. What follows is a story of wonder and betrayal, from the gaslit streets of London to post Civil War Mississippi, and from the wooden theaters of Meiji-era Tokyo to an eerie estate outside Edinburgh where other children with gifts are forced to combat the forces that threaten their safety. This ensemble of wayward and memorable characters come together in a struggle where the world of the dead and the world of the living threaten to collide. First in a series! –Paul

Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock
available in July, paperback, Tor Books
I can’t be more thrilled that TOR Essentials has re-released this classic. I read it upon its release in 1984 and it remains one of my very favorite books after all this time. The mystery of Ryhope Wood, Britain's last fragment of primeval forest, consumed George Huxley's entire, and long, life. Now, after his death, his sons have taken up his work. But what they discover is beyond anything they ever could have expected. For the Wood is a realm where myths gain flesh and blood, tapping primal fears and desires subdued through the millennia. A realm where love and beauty haunt your dreams—and may drive you insane. Looking back, I realize this is one of my own essential books that helped shape me into the person I am today. –Paul

We'll examine pacing, flashback, action, dialogue, and learn how conflict is essential to writing a dramatic story. In this introductory class, we'll generate a beginning time-line and several scene ideas to write at your leisure. Nancy Canyon, MFA, an award-winning writer, is the author of Dark Forest (short fiction), Saltwater (poetry), Celia's Heaven (novel), and Struck, a memoir detailing her work as a fire lookout attendant in the 70s.

Village Books Welcomes
TROY LUGINBILL - Lynden Manager -
A
ll of us at Village Books and Paper Dreams are excited to welcome Troy Luginbill as manager of our Lynden location. Since he started in February, we've all enjoyed getting to know him better and sharing our mutual love of puns, community, and period clothing.
Troy's life has been surrounded by stories. He began his reading career at a local bookstore in Port Orchard. His mother could not take him enough and he went to sit and look at books most Saturdays. His first job was at the Little Professor Book Center in Gig Harbor. From there he went to Western for an Archaeology Degree. While there he took an internship at the Lynden Pioneer Museum. This developed into him leading the organization for 27 years. At the museum he researched and learned the many stories of Whatcom County and its settlers and builders. He served as an elected commissioner at the Whatcom Cemetery District 10. There he learned the stories of those that passed into history. Now as the manager of the Lynden Village Books and Paper Dreams he has returned to his roots helping seekers to find and tell the stories important to them. His passions include collecting WW2 militaria and restoration of his 1943 Dodge WC-55. His primary book interest is in sci-fi and history, although lately he has been reading illustrated novels by fantasy artists. Troy is married to his great love, Jerrie, and has a son, Archer. Born in Bloomington Indiana, he loved running through the May apples in spring, catching crawdads in the creek, and riding his bike with his childhood cat Natasha. His family moved to Gig Harbor and there he graduated from Peninsula High School.
We're so pleased that Troy's story is now intertwined with our own...
Stories have always fascinated Troy. The discovery and telling of stories continued through his tenure as the Director/Curator of the Lynden Pioneer Museum. While he was there he wrote and published Footsteps on Front Street collecting the many stories of the businesses of downtown Lynden. Currently he is writing a tale for his father, "The Adventures of Lucius Stone." The character in the title sprang forth from a portrait he (continued on page 32)

found at the Lynden Pioneer Museum. The portrait was simply labelled "Lucius Stone" on the back. The story of this fellow immediately sprang to life and demanded to be written. As manager of the Lynden Village Books and Paper Dreams he is once more surrounded by stories and tales from the lives of the world around him. Surrounded by stories is a great place to be. We're so pleased that Troy's story is now intertwined with our own and we look forward to discovering where it will lead!

Overnight she went from performer to Resistance spy. Drawing on a plethora of new historical material and rigorous research, including previously undisclosed letters and journals, Lewis upends the conventional story of Josephine Baker, revealing that her mark on history went far beyond the confines of the stage.

A Queer History of the Women’s Suffrage Movement
available in June, hardcover, Seal Press
available now, hardcover, NYU Press
On a Saturday in New York City in 1912, a group of women gathered, all of them convinced that they were going to change the world. It was the first meeting of “Heterodoxy.” Its members were passionate advocates of free love, equal marriage, and easier divorce. They were socialites and socialists; reformers and revolutionaries; artists, writers, and scientists. Their club, at the heart of America’s bohemia, was a springboard for parties, performances, and politics. But it was the women’s extraordinary friendships that made their unconventional lives possible, as they supported each other in pushing for a better world.
Rouse posits that, contrary to popular belief, the suffrage movement included a variety of individuals who represented a range of genders and sexualities. However, owing to the constant pressure to present a “respectable” public image, suffrage leaders publicly conformed to gendered views of ideal womanhood in order to make suffrage more palatable to the public. Rouse argues that queer suffragists did take meaningful action to assert their identities and legacies by challenging traditional concepts of domesticity, family, space, and death in both subtly subversive and radically transformative ways.

River of the Gods : Genius, Courage, and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile by Candice Millard
available now, hardcover, Doubleday
For millennia the location of the Nile River’s headwaters was shrouded in mystery. In the 19th century, there was a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. At the same time, European powers sent off waves of explorations intended to map the unknown corners of the globe – and extend their colonial empires. Candice Millard has written another peerless story of courage and adventure, set against the backdrop of the race to exploit Africa by the colonial powers.
France : An Adventure History
by Graham Robb
available in July, hardcover, W.W. Norton
available in July, hardcover, W.W. Norton
In August 1930, no place in the world was less well explored than the east coast of Greenland. Henry George Watkins, a 23-year-old British explorer, led an expedition into its vast and forbidding interior to set up a permanent meteorological base on the icecap. When they arrived, there were not enough provisions for a two-man shift, so the station would have to be abandoned. Then team member August Courtauld made an astonishing offer — he would monitor the station solo through the winter. When a team went up in March to relieve Courtauld, after weeks of brutal effort to make the 130-mile journey, they could find no trace of him or the station. On April 21, four months after Courtauld began his solitary vigil, Watkins set out inland with two companions to find and rescue him.
Beginning with the Roman army’s first recorded encounter with the Gauls and ending in the era of Emmanuel Macron, France takes readers on an endlessly entertaining journey through French history. Robb conveys with wit and precision what it felt like to look over the shoulder of a young Louis XIV as he planned the vast garden of Versailles, and the dangerous thrill of having a ringside seat at the French revolution. Frequently hilarious, always surprising, Graham Robb’s France combines the stylistic versatility of a novelist with the deep understanding of a scholar.

Current Events The Destructionists :
The Flag, the Cross, and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at his Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened by Bill McKibben
available now, hardcover, Henry Holt and Co.
McKibben grew up believing — knowing — that America was the greatest country on earth; that for all its obvious flaws, it was history’s most dynamic machine, pushing steadily towards a better future. Postwar suburban prosperity; the emerging movements for human equality — the escalator seemed to be heading steadily up. But new understandings of history have cast shadows on that picture — and over the past half century, over consumption and hyper-individualism have wrought havoc on three of America’s most distinctive features: our intertwined sense of history and patriotism, our kindness and generosity, and the promise of prosperity for all. But perhaps something of that old world—of the flag, the cross, the station wagon—can be summoned up again to help us face a difficult future. But if so we’ll need to deal honestly with some serious questions. We can, and we will, be able to tell an American story—a truer one this time.
The Twenty-five Year Crack-Up of the Republican Party by Dana Milbank available in August, hardcover, Doubleday
Dana Milbank sees a clear line from the Contract with America to the coup attempt. In the quarter century in between, Americans have witnessed the crackup of the party of Lincoln and Reagan, to its current iteration as a haven for white supremacists, political violence, conspiracy theories, and authoritarianism.

As the world gradually settles into a new reality, Sedaris too finds himself changed. Newly orphaned, he considers what it means, in his seventh decade, no longer to be someone’s son. The Hurting Kind by Ada Limón
available now, hardcover, Milkweek Editions
An astonishing collection about interconnectedness — between the human and nonhuman, ancestors and ourselves — from National Book Critics Circle Award winner and National Book Award finalist Ada Limón. “I have always been too sensitive, a weeper / from a long line of weepers,” writes Limón. “I am the hurting kind.” What does it mean to be the hurting kind? To be sensitive not only to the world’s pain and joys, but to the meanings that bend in the scrim between the natural world and the human world? To divine the relationships between us all? To perceive ourselves in other beings — and to know that those beings are resolutely their own, that they “do not / care to be seen as symbols”? With Limón’s remarkable ability to trace thought, The Hurting Kind explores those questions—incorporating others’ stories and ways of knowing, making surprising turns, and always reaching a place of startling insight.

She also shows that her theories about what's outside of our universe are now starting to be backed by observational evidence. What's out there? A quantum energy landscape filled multiverses. (Mind blown!)
A Portrait of the Scientist as a Young Woman by Lindy Elkins-Tanton
available in June, hardcover, William Morrow
One part Lab Girl, one part Wild. Amidst a childhood of extraordinary trauma, Elkins-Tanton fell in love with science as a means of healing and consolation. But still she wondered, was science “for her”? In answering that question, she takes us from the wilds of the Siberian tundra to the furthest reaches of outer space, from the Mayo Clinic, where Elkins-Tanton battled ovarian cancer while writing the Psyche proposal, to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where her team brought that proposal to life. A Portrait of the Scientist as a Young Woman is a beautifully constructed memoir that explores how a philosophy of life can be built from the tools of scientific inquiry. It teaches us how to approach difficult problems by asking the right questions and listening in return — and how we may find meaning through exploring the world around us.
There Are Places in the World Where Rules Are Less Important Than Kindness by Carlo Rovelli
available now, hardcover, Riverhead Books
Written with his usual clarity and wit, this journey ranges widely across time and space: from Newton's alchemy to Einstein's mistakes, from Nabokov’s epidopterology to Dante’s cosmology, from mind-altering psychedelic substances to the meaning of atheism, from the future of physics to the power of uncertainty. Charming, pithy and elegant, this book is the perfect gateway to the universe of one of the most influential minds of our age.

Virology : Essays for the
Living, the Dead, and the Small Things In Between
by Joseph Osmundson
available in June, hardcover, W.W. Norton
I really haven’t had the bandwidth for a “pandemic book” but I’ve been looking forward to this one for months. Osmundson is a queer microbiologist and his essays explore the links and differences between Covid and AIDS; what it means to have community care and self care; and what risk really means when we are perpetually at risk. Virology is a hug of solace, a call to action, a confessional over a glass of rose’, and a celebration of the queerness of our whole wide world. –Sarah
Proving Ground : The Untold Story of the Six Women Who Programmed the World’s First Modern Computer by Kathy Kleiman
available in July, hardcover, Grand Central
After the end of World War II, the race for technological supremacy sped on. Top-secret research into ballistics and computing continued across the United States as engineers and programmers rushed to complete their confidential assignments. Among them were six pioneering women, tasked with figuring out how to program the world's first general-purpose, programmable, allelectronic computer. While most students of computer history are aware of the ENIAC, the great contributions of the women who programmed it were never told — until now.
The Elephant in the Universe : Our Hundred-Year Search for Dark Matter
by Govert Schilling
available now, hardcover, Belknap Press
Physicists have devised huge, sensitive instruments to search for dark matter, which may be unlike anything else in the cosmos. Yet so far dark matter has escaped every experiment. Indeed, dark matter is so elusive that some scientists are beginning to suspect there might be something wrong with our theories about gravity or with the current paradigms of cosmology. Schilling interviews both believers and heretics and paints a colorful picture of the history and current status of dark matter research, with astronomers and physicists alike trying to make sense of theory and observation.

Picture Books Supposing...
The Wildwood Elves by Anne-Marie Chapouton, illustrated by Gerda Muller
by Alastair Reid, illustrated by Joohee Yoon
available now, paperback, Floris Books
available in July, hardcover, Enchanated Lion
"SUPPOSING I looked in the mirror one day and saw someone who wasn’t me at all… SUPPOSING I sailed around the world and when I was a mile from my hometown, I just turned the boat and sailed round again the other way… SUPPOSING..." Supposing leads to pondering a chain of hypothetical events that dare us to imagine a world beyond the laws of physics and unbeholden to societal conventions. Still as delightful and fresh as it was in 1960, Alastair Reid’s text is accompanied by new, dazzlingly vibrant illustrations from JooHee Yoon.
Deep in the forest, the Wildwood elves live happily in their little village, making pottery, chopping wood and growing vegetables. But when a friendly seagull makes a flying visit, they are astonished to hear of a mysterious thing called 'the sea'... and so begins a wonderful seaside adventure. Charmingly written by popular French children's author Anne-Marie Chapouton, and full of lively and characterful illustrations by world-renowned artist Gerda Muller, this classic tale is available in English for the first time.

While holding guard during Knight Night Watch, Owl is faced with the ultimate trial — a frightening intruder (dragon!). It’s a daunting duel, but what Owl lacks in size, he makes up for in good ideas (pizza!). Full of wordplay and optimism, this surprising display of bravery proves that cleverness (and friendship) can rule over brawn.
Imagine a house's early days as a home: A young family builds a picket fence and plants flowers in its yard, children climb the magnolia tree and play the piano in the living room, and there is music inside the house for many happy years. But what happens when its windows grow dark, its paint starts to crumble, and its boards creak in the winter wind? The house dreams of a family who will love it again...and one day, a new story will emerge from within its walls. From the nationally beloved co-host of the #1 hit show Home Town comes the quintessential celebration of home.

Picture Books The Language of Flowers
Berry Song
by Dena Seiferling
by Michaela Goade
available now, hardcover, Tundra Books
available in July, hardcover, Little, Brown
Deep within a magical meadow, some lonely flowers receive a very special gift: a baby bumblebee in need. The flowers name her Beatrice. They care for her and help her find her wings. As she grows older, Beatrice learns the language of her floral family — messages of kindness and appreciation that she delivers between them. With each sweet word, the flowers bloom until the meadow becomes so big that Beatrice needs help delivering her messages and decides to set out in search of her own kind. What happens when this little bee’s quest takes her beyond the safety of the meadow? This gently fanciful tale of the miracle of pollination and the important relationship between flowers and bees, inspired by the Victorian practice of floriography, suggests the secret to flourishing is kindness and appreciation.
Growing up along Alaska’s wild coast where she picked berries with every season, Caldecott-Medalist Michaela Goade's first self-authored picture book is a gorgeous celebration of the land she knows well and the powerful wisdom of elders. On an island at the edge of a wide, wild sea, a girl and her grandmother gather gifts from the earth. Salmon from the stream, herring eggs from the ocean, and in the forest, a world of berries. Salmonberry, Cloudberry, Blueberry, Nagoonberry. Huckleberry, Snowberry, Strawberry, Crowberry. Through the seasons, they sing to the land as the land sings to them. Brimming with joy and gratitude, in every step of their journey, they forge a deeper kinship with both the earth and the generations that came before, joining in the song that connects us all.

Answers in the Pages by David Levithan
available now, hardcover, Knopf

It's just an adventure novel about two characters trying to stop an evil genius...right? But soon the entire town is freaking out about whether the book's main characters are gay, Donovan's mom is trying to get the book removed from the school curriculum, and Donovan is caught in the middle. Donovan doesn't really know if the two boys fall in love at the end or not — but he does know this: even if they do, it shouldn't matter. The book should not be banned from school. Interweaving three connected storylines, bestselling author David Levithan delivers a bold, fun, and timely story about taking action (whether it's against book censors or deadly alligators...), being brave, and standing up for what's right.

A Show for Two
Our Crooked Hearts
available now, hardcover, Inkyard Press
available in June, hardcover, Flatiron Books
Mina Rahman dreams of becoming a film director, leaving New York City and her parents behind. Wanting to leave with a mark, she recruits Emmitt Ramos, a small indie actor, to use him as clout to win the Golden Ivy student film competition. With a budding relationship between the two, not exactly strictly business, Mina ends up rethinking everything she’s lived for. I recommend this book especially for fellow South Asians out there, hitting home hard for so many struggling to find their voice, who need some hope for their dreams. –Suhani K. age 16
Our Crooked Hearts weaves a brilliant tale of secrets, witchcraft, and lies, creating a gripping book that is eerie, strange, and mysterious in all the right ways. Though it moves around in time, this book was still easy to follow, with a good flow, and a romantic side plot that didn’t feel forced or last minute. If you are interested in fantasy, horror, or simply enjoy books with intriguing plotlines and dark, rich writing, then give this book a try. –Nora L. age 14

Sofi and the Bone Song
by Joya Goffney
by Adrienne Tooley
available now, hardcover, Harperteen
available now, hardcover, Margaret K McElderry Books
Sofi and the Bone Song is the perfect book to read in a cozy chair by the fire with a warm cup of tea. This is a refreshing take on fantasy, centered around music rather than war, with decently creative world building and plenty of LGBTQ+ representation (including main characters)! It is wholesome and comforting without shying away from discussing abuse and suffering. Overall, a beautiful, well-written story for anyone who loves music and fantasy. –Louisa M. age 18

Confessions of an Alleged Good Girl This book is literally about sex…and self-love, unlikely friendships, and defining you for yourself; all so masterfully bundled in this entertaining book. Follow church “good girl” Monique as she embarks on the rocky road of putting herself first when it comes to her body, her heart, and her morals. Although the ending was better than the beginning, I very much enjoyed reading this book, as it kept me smiling and rooting for the protagonist the whole time! –Kaatri G. age 16
The Ghosts of Rose Hill by R. M. Romero
available now, hardcover, Peachtree Teen
Caught between her music and the dreams of success her parents held, Illana is exiled to Prague for the summer. However, despite her constraints, she manages to break away and find herself in a dilapidated cemetery. She is haunted by pain, passion, and of course, ghosts and bogey monsters alike. The Ghosts of Rose Hill is a stunning story in verse depicting the contradictions we face in coming home to ourselves. I found myself comfortable and enthralled by each line just as you may. The touching characters, vibrant scenery, and historical accents will surely ensnare you as the ghosts of Rose Hill did Illana. –Abby S. age 17

Green Eyes And Ham is that one story that just makes you want to say, we’ve all met that bad boy. Discovering feelings and just learning how to be a person, this story made me think back. Although no one really wants to go back to middle school, I enjoyed this one last trip. –Riley J. age 17

We All Fall Down : The River City Duology #1
by Rose Szabo
available in June, hardcover, Farrar, Straus and Giroux
This first book in a dark fantasy YA duology by the author of What Big Teeth, is about the power and danger of stories and the untold costs of keeping magic alive, perfect for fans of Alexandra Bracken and Claire Legrand. In River City, where magic used to thrive and is now fading, the witches who once ruled the city along with their powerful King have become all but obsolete. When a corrupt police officer, an enforcer of the New City's oppressive rules, turns up dead, four people are brought into each others' orbits as they uncover a deeper magical conspiracy. They do not realize that they have been selected as archetypal figures — The Maiden, the Hero, the Monster, and the Witch, intended to act out an ancient ritual that will revive the flow of magic through their world.

These pages will lead you on a multimedia journey through the conceptual design, the process of construction, and meaning within the sculpture. There will not be instructions on how each part is made, as all of the techniques reflect a nuanced relationship between the artist and the material. This relationship is explored through a process of design that allows the characteristics of the media to guide the construction. His soul is deeply fulfilled when his hands are able to commune with mud, sticks, and rocks.

Round It Up, our amazingly simple giving program, was designed to support local non-profits. Join Village Books and Paper Dreams customers who are supporting our community by rounding up your next purchase to the nearest dollar.
Wild Whatcom fosters lifelong connections to nature. They do this to promote the health and well-being of young people, and to support our community in raising a generation of environmental stewards who care about each other and the planet. They are committed to closing the nature gap by creating pathways to comfort, connection, and discovery for people who have barriers to accessing outdoor programs. Their free, school-based programs for low-income, rural, and special needs students, free loaner gear, and scholarships make that possible! Wild Whatcom offers a variety of programs for ALL ages: visit wildwhatcom.org to explore and sign up!
