Dear Reader, "The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is 42." So we have been told by Douglas Adams, and here we are, celebrating year 42 at Village Books. So maybe the universe is telling us something for this summer. A little antigravitational levity may be due to us, it's summer, don't panic — time to play! Romance books are packing themselves onto the shelves, as are books and guides celebrating the nature of the northwest. Games and puzzles are also cosmically popular as we sit down to play with friends, neighbors, and family during the long evenings. Our ever popular summer camp for youth will be back so this must mean the planets are aligning in our favor.

We wish you and yours a happy and safe summer with wherever your adventures take you, but remember, "you've got to know where your towel is."

This is the first book by Jennifer McMahon that I have read, I'll definitely be seeking out her previous novels! This suspenseful story is told in alternating timelines, covering childhood dreams and nightmares, the importance of family, the dangers of playing God, and the consequences of doing so.

This was by far, one of the best psychological thrillers I have read. I really enjoyed this modern take on a classic monster book. –Erica

Spokane’s Free Speech Riots of 1909 form the backdrop of the novel and historical figures Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and Police Chief John T. Sullivan anchor the plot. WaMemWriMo Classes for Your Writing Life COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Write Your Memoir in September Since 2014, September has been declared Washington Memoir Writing Month (WaMemWriMo) by the Red Wheelbarrow Writers in conjunction with Village Books and Whatcom Community College. Throughout the month there are classes, write-outs, readings and encouragement to write 1666 words every day, resulting in 50,000 words of your memoir — a book — by the end of September.

As a part of WaMemWriMo, this series of workshops will help you along the way as you turn your memories into memoir.

You will have given shape and voice to the stories and adventures you always wanted to share, the stories your readers want to hear. These workshops, all taught or led by experienced memoir writers and teachers, can be taken as a whole, or you can select from the individual workshops to suit your needs and schedule.

Four Sessions: Thursdays, September 8- 29, 5pm-6:30pm Thursday, September 8 • The Past and the Page: Introduction To Writing Your Memoir with Laura Kalpakian Hybrid - at Village Books in Fairhaven or Virtual Memoirs begin with memory. Writing a memoir means shaping memories— places, people, relationships, family stories, events both big and small—into a coherent narrative. This class will offer ideas, strategies, and suggestions to help you meet that challenge. We’ll discuss how (and where) to begin putting the past on the page, how to develop and sustain your work, and how to use family materials – journals, letters, photographs–to enhance your story.

Thursday, September 22 • The Scene and Three Acts with Nancy Canyon Hybrid - at Village Books in Fairhaven or Virtual Aristotle's Incline — a three-act plotting device, along with the literary scene — the building block of any book, provide writers with two easy tools for penning and organizing a memoir. Literary scenes locate along the timeline and big scenes — ­ or turning-points — ­ build dramatic tension and move the story forward. We'll examine pacing, flashback, action, dialogue, and learn how conflict is essential to writing a dramatic story. In this introductory class, we'll generate a beginning time-line and several scene ideas to write at your leisure. Nancy Canyon, MFA, an award-winning writer, is the author of Dark Forest (short fiction), Saltwater (poetry), Celia's Heaven (novel), and Struck, a memoir detailing her work as a fire lookout attendant in the 70s.

Thursday, September 15 • Four Essential Practices for Successful Memoir Writing with Cami Ostman Hybrid - at Village Books in Fairhaven or Virtual No matter how long you've procrastinated or how many times you've tried to write your memoir, this class will give you the tools you need to get it done.

Hear about the top three roadblocks most memoir writers face, and the four essential (and simple) practices you need to put in place in order to complete your memoir. Walk out of this class with a plan that will carry you through the rest of your writing life. TROY LUGINBILL - Lynden Manager -

A

ll of us at Village Books and Paper Dreams are excited to welcome Troy Luginbill as manager of our Lynden location. Since he started in February, we've all enjoyed getting to know him better and sharing our mutual love of puns, community, and period clothing.

Troy's life has been surrounded by stories. He began his reading career at a local bookstore in Port Orchard. His mother could not take him enough and he went to sit and look at books most Saturdays. His first job was at the Little Professor Book Center in Gig Harbor. From there he went to Western for an Archaeology Degree. While there he took an internship at the Lynden Pioneer Museum. This developed into him leading the organization for 27 years. At the museum he researched and learned the many stories of Whatcom County and its settlers and builders. He served as an elected commissioner at the Whatcom Cemetery District 10. There he learned the stories of those that passed into history. Now as the manager of the Lynden Village Books and Paper Dreams he has returned to his roots helping seekers to find and tell the stories important to them.

His passions include collecting WW2 militaria and restoration of his 1943 Dodge WC-55. His primary book interest is in sci-fi and history, although lately he has been reading illustrated novels by fantasy artists. Troy is married to his great love, Jerrie, and has a son, Archer. Born in Bloomington Indiana, he loved running through the May apples in spring, catching crawdads in the creek, and riding his bike with his childhood cat Natasha. His family moved to Gig Harbor and there he graduated from Peninsula High School.

We're so pleased that Troy's story is now intertwined with our own...

Stories have always fascinated Troy. The discovery and telling of stories continued through his tenure as the Director/Curator of the Lynden Pioneer Museum. While he was there he wrote and published Footsteps on Front Street collecting the many stories of the businesses of downtown Lynden. Currently he is writing a tale for his father, "The Adventures of Lucius Stone." The character in the title sprang forth from a portrait he (continued on page 32)

found at the Lynden Pioneer Museum. The portrait was simply labelled "Lucius Stone" on the back. The story of this fellow immediately sprang to life and demanded to be written. As manager of the Lynden Village Books and Paper Dreams he is once more surrounded by stories and tales from the lives of the world around him. Surrounded by stories is a great place to be.

We're so pleased that Troy's story is now intertwined with our own and we look forward to discovering where it will lead!

Their club, at the heart of America’s bohemia, was a springboard for parties, performances, and politics. But it was the women’s extraordinary friendships that made their unconventional lives possible, as they supported each other in pushing for a better world.

Rouse posits that, contrary to popular belief, the suffrage movement included a variety of individuals who represented a range of genders and sexualities.

However, owing to the constant pressure to present a “respectable” public image, suffrage leaders publicly conformed to gendered views of ideal womanhood in order to make suffrage more palatable to the public. Rouse argues that queer suffragists did take meaningful action to assert their identities and legacies by challenging traditional concepts of domesticity, family, space, and death in both subtly subversive and radically transformative ways.

The year 1983 began like any other year in Canada’s West Coast province. Then suddenly everything changed when the newly elected provincial government announced an avalanche of far-right legislation that shocked the country.

In response, a resistance movement called Solidarity quickly formed across British Columbia uniting people who had never protested before. Solidarity chronicles the history of 20th century British Columbia, exploring its great divides and alliances, cultures and subcultures, and conflicts that continue into the 21st century. Travis will do some demonstrations, answer questions about his art, and sign copies of his book, Anglerfish Sauna. On the book: What inspired us to make a 17 foot model of a female Anglerfish that is a wood-fired sauna on wheels? These pages will lead you on a multimedia journey through the conceptual design, the process of construction, and meaning within the sculpture. There will not be instructions on how each part is made, as all of the techniques reflect a nuanced relationship between the artist and the material. This relationship is explored through a process of design that allows the characteristics of the media to guide the construction. Travis Skinner has always been comfortable and inspired being outside. The woods are a refuge for his creativity and a provider of his materials. His soul is deeply fulfilled when his hands are able to commune with mud, sticks, and rocks.
