Dear Reader, The excitement of yet another holiday season is upon us and this edition of the Chuckanut Reader is packed with news about happenings at the store, in Fairhaven and throughout the community. Carriage rides, Santa and the Grinch are all returning and we're extremely excited about a new Fairhaven-wide activity that launches November 14th— Fairhaven Gives Back (pg. 4). Small Business Saturday (November 30) has a new twist as authors become booksellers in the new Indies First program (pg. 6). And Rick Steves makes a couple of pre-holiday appearances, among many other events. Of course, you'll find dozens of previews of new books that will make fine presents for those on your list, or great reading for yourself. Each staff member has also picked a book or a product that he or she recommends as a great holiday gift. For even more recommendations you'll find our annual Holiday Books insert as well. The holiday season is always a time for reflection and gratitude. As we reflect on the past year we're extremely grateful for you, dear readers. We're grateful for your support of local businesses and your dedication to building a healthy community. We're grateful for the way you value books and the ideas they carry. And, we're grateful for your friendship. We wish you the most joyous of holiday seasons and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Last year, because of your generosity, we gave books to almost 800 kids through a dozen local organizations! And in case you hadn't noticed, it doesn't seem that things have gotten much better for a lot of folks. So, pick an ornament-tag from the GIVING TREE, on the store's main floor, and match it with a book of your choice. The books you purchase for giving tree recipients will be offered at a 20% discount, and will be distributed to kids, through community organizations, the week before Christmas.

indies FIRST In the old-time cowboy movies the heroes arrived to save folks from the attacking Indians. In one of the greatest turnabouts in history, an Indian is out to save Independent bookstores from the attacks of an online behemoth. Late this summer, longtime Village Books (and indie bookstore) friend, Sherman Alexie, wrote this to fellow authors: "Now is the time to be a superhero for independent bookstores. I want all of us (you, and you, and especially you) to spend an amazing day hand-selling books at your local independent bookstore on Small Business Saturday (that's the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 30 this year, so you know it's a huge weekend for everyone who, you know, wants to make a living)." Sherman went on to suggest to fellow writers that they sign on to be booksellers for a day at an independent bookstore. He told them to sell and sign not only their own books, but to recommend books by other authors that they love and want others to read. Well, authors responded. From 11am until 7pm you'll be able to meet and talk with Northwest authors who are passionate about books right here at Village Books. We have four authors lined up to talk up their favorites, so stop in and learn what they want you to read. Here's the schedule: • 11am -1pm: ABBE ROLNICK, novels Color of Lies and River of Angels • 1-3pm: CLETE BARRETT SMITH, Alien Bed & Breakfast middle reader series: Aliens on Vacation, Alien on a Rampage, and Aliens in Disguise • 3-5pm: JIM LYNCH, novels Truth Like the Sun, Border Songs and The Highest Tide • 5-7pm: JANET OAKLEY, novel Tree Soldier

Building Community One Book at a Time
Paul Hanson Named
Village Books/Paper Dreams General Manager In mid-September Paul Hanson, who joined us as Community Outreach Director June, 2011, was named General Manager of Village Books/Paper Dreams. Paul began his retail bookselling career in 1989 in a mall bookstore where he worked for six years—the last three as the store manager. He had a sixteen-year tenure at Eagle Harbor Books on Bainbridge Island, serving as the store's manager for thirteen of those years, just before coming to Bellingham. During those years he was active in the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association, serving on its board of directors and as its president; and in the American Booksellers Association, serving a three-year term on its Booksellers Advisory Council. Since coming to Bellingham, Paul has been actively engaged in building community partnerships with businesses and nonprofits. Taking to heart the Village Books mission—"Building Community, One Book at a Time"— he has worked with dozens of organizations to build mutually beneficial relationships, and has extended that to the Paper Dreams side of the business as well. One of his major responsibilities has been as the store's primary representative in the partnership with Whatcom Community College producing the Chuckanut Writers Conference. He has also been instrumental in developing stronger relationships with writers and writers' groups. Paul will work closely with Chuck and Dee, who will continue as Co-CEO's. He will also collaborate with the other members of the Leadership Team—Store Manager Sarah Hutton and Floor/Merchandising Manager Kelly Evert—in overseeing the stores' operations. In August Paul married Kelly Evert on the Fairhaven Village Green. They live in Bellingham with her 15-yearold daughter, Madeline, and their dog, Harry. "We got to know Paul many years before he came to work with us at Village Books," said Co-owner Chuck Robinson. "We're thrilled to have him step into this role and help lead this organization."

FICTION
The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan
available in November, hardcover, Harper
Spanning fifty years and two continents, Tan resurrects lost worlds: from the moment when China's imperial dynasty collapsed and a Republic arose and foreign trade became the lifeblood of Shanghai, to the inner workings of courtesan houses. It is also a deeply evocative narrative of family secrets, the legacy of trauma, and the profound connections between mothers and daughters.
A Great Gift... Sweet Thunder
hardcover FICTION
The Explanation for Everything: A Novel by Lauren Grodstein
available now, hardcover, Algonquin
Still recovering from the loss of his wife, an evolutionary biology professor agrees to mentor a new student's independent study on intelligent design. At first, I expected Grodstein to get preachy one way or the other, but I was pleasantly surprised by the non-political humanity of her novel. Not so much a book about the ideas themselves, but rather a compelling story about the extreme difficulty of sticking to your beliefs in times of stress, and the stubbornness of those who become slaves to their beliefs. —Brendan
by Ivan Doig
"In the third of his Morrie Morgan tales, Sweet Thunder, Doig takes us back to Butte and the battle between Anaconda, with their mouthpiece the "Post," and the start-up labor newspaper, the "Thunder" over corporate/labor issues. Doig is at his best when writing from the experience of his former reportorial career. It's a rollicking good read and, linked with its two prequel volumes, Whistling Season and Work Song, rounds out a great trilogy." –Chuck
The Last Days of California by Mary Miller
January, hardcover, Norton
With The Last Days of California, Mary Miller bursts into the literary world, taking up the mantle of Southern fiction and rendering it her own with wry vulnerability and contemporary urgency. Miller’s revelatory protagonist, Jess, is fourteen years old and waiting for the world to end. Her evangelical father has packed up the family and left their Montgomery home to drive west to California, hoping to save as many souls as possible before the Second Coming.
A Great Gift... Night Film
Orfeo: A Novel by Richard Powers
January, hardcover, Norton
The National Book Award-winning author of The Echo Maker delivers his most emotionally charged novel to date, inspired by the myth of Orpheus. Impossibly ambitious yet exquisitely intimate—the ending will leave you both gasping at its audacity and weeping over its characters. It contains ecstatic, passionate, beautifully wrought writing about music. Orfeo is coming in January, but start buckling your seatbelt now,and get ready to have your mindset totally alight.

FICTION The Wind Is Not a River by Brian Payton
available in January, hardcover, Harper
While accompanying a crew on a bombing run in World War II, journalist John Easley's plane is shot down over the Aleutian island of Attu. But surviving the crash is only the beginning of his ordeal in this harsh and unforgiving fury of a wilderness known as "the Birthplace of Winds." In the days ahead, John must battle the elements, starvation, and his own regrets while evading discovery by the Japanese.
The Last Man Standing by Davide Longo
available now, hardcover, Quercus
In a "post-peak" world of chaos and deprivation, a gentle, feckless antihero is cast adrift, seeking refuge in an imagined elsewhere that no longer exists. Unusual alliances are formed, and his character is shaped in unexpected ways, while paradoxically retaining a core of integrity. This emotionally pithy work of speculative fiction may be a sleeper. And yet it may haunt your dreams..." —Donna
A Great Gift...
Someone Else's Love Story
Inferno
by Joshilyn Jackson
by Dan Brown
available in November, hardcover, Harper
"This novel is a high-speed collision of ideas: faith with happenstance, love with death, truth with the lies we tell ourselves to get along. A miracle unfolds: a literary gem wrapped in a page turner, a novel of ideas encased in a love story you will never forget." —Lydia Netzer, author of Shine, Shine, Shine
Bellman & Black by Diane Setterfield
available in November, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
Setterfield's debut novel, The Thirteenth Tale, was my favorite book of that year (everyone I've recommended it to has agreed), and has remained at the top of my list ever since. So, I was understandably thrilled when I'd heard that her second novel, Bellman & Black, was coming. Oh. Holy. Cow. She has done it again. This gothic tale is PERFECT for these darkening days. My only quandary: Which of her books is now my favorite? —Paul
The Ascendant: A Thriller by Drew Chapman
available in January, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
Bond analyst Garrett Reilly has stumbled upon something much larger—and scarier—than he could have imagined. This taut and cunning novel takes readers into a scenario that is eerily plausible and utterly terrifying—an unconventional war capable of bringing a superpower to its knees. The Ascendant is a brilliant new twist on the art of the white-knuckle thriller.
12 Winter 2013 – 2014
"You'll learn a lot about Italy's history while enjoying a very exciting story!" –Erika
Hild: A Novel
by Nicola Griffith available in November, hardcover, Macmillan
Hild is a young woman at the heart of the violence, subtlety, and mysticism of the early medieval age, all of it brilliantly and accurately evoked by Nicola Griffith's luminous prose. Recalling such feats of historical fiction as Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall and Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter, Hild brings a beautiful, brutal world and one of its most fascinating, pivotal figures, the girl who would become St. Hilda of Whitby to vivid, absorbing life.
Half the Kingdom by Lore Segal
available now, hardcover, Melville House
A downtown hospital is struck by an epidemic of dementia; elderly patients deteriorate before the befuddled eyes of their doctors and children. Some assume it's a terrorist plot, others assume it's the end of the world, and even the medical system finds itself blundering in the dark. Segal takes us into the minds of the afflicted, full of confusion and memory. She surprises us, makes us feel uncomfortable, and jokes with us all at once. Through it all, Segal lampoons our fear of mortality with dark wit and deep sensitivity to the diverse pains of growing old. —Brendan

The Mongolian Conspiracy by Rafael Bernal, translated by Katherine Silver available in November, paperback, New Directions
Ruthless, misogynistic, and seemingly unaffected by violence, Filiberto Garcia is a “stiff machine”—an aging, exrevolutionary hired gun in mid-sixties Mexico City. Tasked with investigating a threat against the US president during an upcoming visit, Garcia uncovers more than he bargained for, and encounters real tragedy and—maybe, just maybe – some little bit of redemption in the process. Finding Camlann: A Novel by Sean Pidgeon
January, paperback, Norton
Archaeologist Donald Gladstone is sure that there never was a “real” King Arthur—that is, until a surprising find at Stonehenge seems to offer hard evidence of Arthur’s existence. Teaming up with Julia Llewellyn, a gifted linguist working at the Oxford English Dictionary, Donald sets off on a literary and mythological quest that will change both of their lives. Gloriously many-layered, Finding Camlann is a deeply satisfying love story, a gripping detective story, and a narrative journey of myriad pleasures.
The Dinner: A Novel by Herman Koch
available now, paperback, Hogarth
A psychological thriller that takes place over the course of one meal. Once this multinational bestseller from the Netherlands sank its teeth into me, I was riveted. Koch's narrator merely sits at the table munching appetizers with his wife, brother, and sister-inlaw, yet I couldn't tear myself away. What kept me going was my gradual suspicion that through this narrator, the author had placed me inside the mind of a sociopath. With cunning detail and flawless pacing, Koch explores the furthest limits of family loyalty. Required reading for book groups and anyone with a dark room and a flashlight. —Brendan
The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly: A Novel by Sun-mi Hwang, translated by Chi-Young Kim available in November, paperback, Penguin
The 2-million-copy bestselling modern fable from Korea that is winning hearts around the world. "Sometimes the simplest character, expressed in the sparest prose, embarks upon life's most heroic journey. Meet Sprout, a plucky hen whose modest dream to hatch a single egg will take her down a path that leads to her true place in the natural world. This novel is uniquely poised at the nexus of fable, philosophy, children's literature, and nature writing." —Adam Johnson, The Orphan Master's Son

FICTION Above All Things: A Novel by Tanis Rideout
available in February, paperback, Penguin
Alternating between the perspectives of mountaineer George Mallory and his wife Ruth, this story ensnares the reader with atmospheric writing that captures all the cold and cruelty of this expedition. While George tries to reach the summit of Mount Everest, Ruth resents his absence and his obsession and fears this time he won’t return. —Rachel H.
The Isle of Youth: Stories by Laura van den Berg
Wigrum
available in November, paperback, Talonbooks
Originally written in French and winner of the 2011 Grafika Award, Wigrum artfully blurs the line between fiction and reality. When he disappears one night in October 1944, Sebastian Wigrum leaves one final wish: to have his collections of ordinary objects compiled and published. The result is this amazing compendium, full of seemingly random objects and ficticious —but entirely believable—stories behind them. The creative format and subject matter will appeal to flash fiction readers and fans of Thomas Pynchon. This is a truly innovative book! —Jenny
The Island of Second Sight
available in November, paperback, Macmillan
by Albert Vigoleis Thelen
The characters in these stories share the sensation of having become lost in the mysteries of the self and the world at large that seems at once entirely singular and utterly familiar. Van den Berg writes with an elegant urgency and hypnotic rhythm, revealing the inner lives of marginalized young women who are grappling with the choices they've made.
available now, paperback, Penguin
The Antagonist by Lynn Coady
by Daniel Canty, translated by Oana Avasilichioaei
Unavailable to English readers for more than 50 years, The Island of Second Sight is a masterpiece of world literature. Set in the years leading up to World War II, this is the fictionalized account of the time spent in Mallorca by the author and his wife, who encounter the most unpredictable and surreal adventures, pursued all the while by Nazis and Francoists. And then, the Spanish Civil War erupts. The Island of Second Sight is at once ironic and humanistic, hilarious and profoundly serious, philosophical and grotesque.
available now, paperback, Vintage
Tired of the reluctant hero? Finally, debut author Coady gives us the ultimate reluctant villain. Gordon "Rank" Rankin Jr. is a burly, sarcastic, unfor tunate dude. When Rank discovers his old college buddy has published a novel casting him as the villain, Rank decides to set the record straight. In a furious, occasionally drunk series of emails, he bares his damaged soul, rages against his despicable father, and reveals the hideous distortions forced upon us by others. A tip of my cap to Coady for writing the most hilarious man-to-man dialogue I've ever read (seriously). A genuinely original, resoundingly-delivered tragicomedy. —Brendan
The Yellow Eyes of Crocodiles by Katherine Pancol, translated by William Rodarmor available in January, paperback, Penguin
"No wonder Katherine Pancol's books are all bestsellers, reading her feels like coming home. Her characters become like friends and family members, and you long to know how they get on. The Yellow Eyes of Crocodiles has all the quirks, tensions, and belly laughs that family, friendship, and sisterhood can entail. It is touching, entertaining, and vibrant." —David Weill

Launched with the summer 2004 award-winning Brooklyn Noir, this groundbreaking series is a must-read for all mystery fans; and this is the first "best of" collection. As Oprah Magazine says: "Hold the eggnog: What you need is a draft of 'edgy fatalism and sexy recklessness,' of flashy crime, gallows humor, and 'desperate deals with a variety of devils,' served up in Akashic Books' brilliant noir anthologies."

HORROR!
In 1977, Stephen King introduced readers to sheer terror with The Shining —the story of one family taking care of the Overlook Hotel during the winter months. Danny Torrence, the son in the family, has a special gift that gives him telepathic powers called 'shining'. Ghosts start to plague the family and, well, I think we all know what happened next. Doctor Sleep takes place many years later. Danny now goes by Dan and suffers from alcoholism. Moving from town to town he settles in New England and works in a hospice where he uses his shining abilities to help people cross to the other side. Elsewhere there is a group called the True Knot that take young children with the shining ability and feed off their "steam". This book about good vs.evil is an excellent book for any Stephen King fan. —Alex

GAY
by Ginn Hale
available now, paperback, Blind Eye Books
“Finally the third installment in Hale’s Rifter trilogy is here! The last book ended on a painful cliffhanger. I always come to love Hale’s characters so much it’s hard to see them suffer and she certainly doesn’t make things easy for them, but the real miracle of her writing is that I feel everything her characters feel. Hale never disappoints.” —Rachel H.

Publishing Programs Making Transition For more than four years, Village Books has been engaged in publishing books under its own Chuckanut Editions imprint, and printing and binding books for selfpublishers. The two programs have been very successful, and we are now embarking on some major changes. The most apparent change will be that we have moved our printing and binding services off-site. The Espresso Book Machine, which has been a prominent feature of our Parkside North section of the store, has been moved out. Other changes will be in enhanced publishing services that we will be able to roll out to folks who wish to publish their own books. Look for details of those services in our Spring Chuckanut Reader and check out the Writers' Corner tab at VillageBooks.com for further information. As with any change, there will likely be some glitches as we work out all of the details and get our new systems and programs in place. We ask for your patience as we make the transition.

WRITING Carver Country: The World of Raymond Carver by Raymond Carver
available now, hardcover, Quantuck Lane Press
This posthumous collection paints a biographical portrait of Raymond Carver, a Northwest poet and short story writer, with excerpts from his stories, poems and letters, and tributes by Ann Beattie and Tess Gallagher. The reader will explore the beautiful and harsh environment of Carter’s youth, which he captures so clearly in his stories, and images of the under-dog characters who populate those places. Writers of all genres will discover a kindred spirit in Carver as he honed his voice and developed his craft. The photographs of Bob Adelman provide an armchair tour through Raymond Carver country—Yakima, Vantage, Port Angeles. I suggest reading Carver’s poems and stories as an accompaniment to this book for an in-depth experience of Carver’s complexity and simplicity. —Cindi

Introducing ... VILLAGE BOOKS’
Signed
FIRST EDITIONS
CLUB
W
hether you love reading, collecting books, or simply the idea of a monthly surprise in novel form, consider joining our Signed First Editions Club. As a member, you’ll receive a newly published signed first edition fiction book each month for a year. Our qualified buyers work together to select books based on literary quality and potential collectability. What does it cost to join? - Nothing! You pay for the books, but not for the membership. The list prices of the books vary a little around an average $25-$35 range, but members only pay a flat $25 for each book (including both tax and shipping!). Each selection also comes with a protective dust jacket cover. Memberships last for a year and you will be charged that $25 on a monthly basis. You may cancel your membership at any time. Why a Signed First Editions Club? - Book collecting is the primary reason, but some avid readers simply enjoy receiving a novel surprise every month. This club helps members build their libraries with contemporary, autographed, first edition novels that we consider worth your attention. Since our selections are all recent publications, members have a chance to discover upcoming writers and literary gems before everyone else. As book lovers, we’re promoting literary investment more than monetary investment, but it’s also worth noting that first editions, especially signed ones, often increase significantly in value over time, especially when the author gains notable recognition. Why Village Books’ club? - Village Books, founded in 1980, is immersed in the reading/publishing world, as is our staff of knowledgeable booksellers. We host more than 300 authors a year and have become a literary icon in our community. Our staff reads advance copies of books months before publication and frequently meets with publishing industry representatives to discuss new publications. We know books and we love books! Can I give a membership as a gift? - Absolutely! This would be an ideal gift for the bibliophiles in your life, especially the book collecting kind, and maybe even for someone who isn’t obsessed with books…yet. Memberships last for a year and you, as the gift giver, will be charged $25 each month for that year. After that, the gift receiver can decide whether or not to continue their membership on their own... or you can renew their membership. How do I sign up? - You can register online at VillageBooks.com (under Book Recommendations/Signed First Editions Club), by phone, or in store. You're bound to have more questions about this program, so check out our FAQs at VillageBooks.com (under Book Recommendations/Signed First Editions Club).

BUY LOCAL for the Holidays F
or the 10th year, Sustainable Connections’ Think Local First! campaign is reminding folks about what it means to be local and the steps we can all take to continue to support our local businesses, our local economy, and our friends and neighbors. Take these steps for a happy and prosperous holiday season: Shop Local – Support local retailers and service providers by doing your holiday shopping with them. Remember that for every $100 you spend at a local business $68 stays here recirculating in our community, supporting local jobs and reinvestment in our community. Make a 10% Shift – The smallest change in shopping behavior can make a huge difference. Make a goal of shifting at least 10% of your non-local purchases to a local business this holiday season. Eat Local Food – Just because the weather has cooled doesn’t mean there isn’t still a plethora of local food to enjoy for the holidays. The Bellingham Farmers Market is open through Dec. 22nd and is a great resource for local foods. Use Cash – Consider using cash when making holiday purchases at local businesses. Not only will using cash help ensure you’ll stick to your budget but can save local businesses thousands of dollars in processing fees. Give and Volunteer - Local non-profits contribute significantly to the quality of our community and can use all the help they can get during these challenging economic times. Consider a monetary gift or volunteer some time. Relax and Have Fun! – After all, that’s what this season is about. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Take the time to enjoy the season and all its bounty along with your family and friends. You deserve it!

One Book Pledger "Step out onto the planet. Draw a circle a hundred feet round. Inside are three hundred things nobody understands, and, maybe, nobody's ever really seen. How many can you find?" If you've been around Saul Weisberg very long, you've probably heard him recite this Lew Welch poem more than once. It quickly and accurately gives you two very important clues about him: 1) he's deep to the bone a naturalist, and 2) he loves poetry. In 1979, having left Ohio for the mountains of Washington State a few years earlier, Saul became a backcountry ranger with the National Park Service in the North Cascades. On an early season climb of Mt. Shuksan, Saul and a fellow ranger were instrumental in rescuing a party that had strayed from their route and lost one member in a fall. Saul’s boss, realizing the need, designated the two as the park’s first climbing rangers, and they went on to begin what has grown into the very sophisticated mountain rescue program that exists within the park today. In 1986 Saul, along with fellow ranger and close friend Tom Fleischner, created North Cascades Institute. The institute, which at first operated pretty much out of Saul and Tom's backpacks, has now grown to include a beautiful Environmental Learning Center at Diablo Lake, serves nearly 20,000 individuals each year—from 5th graders in Mountain School, to adults in field classes—and has a budget pushing 3 million dollars. The Institute’s mission is to conserve and restore Northwest environments through education. The organization does that by connecting people, nature and community, with the goal of helping people of all ages enjoy the mountains, rivers, forests, wildlife and people of the Pacific Northwest so that all will care for and protect this special place.
"My knowledge of the literary world is based on dropping into the store."
Books have always had a special place in Saul's life. He says, "back in the day, there were two things I never hesitated buying—books and climbing gear. I'd look at a book or piece of gear that I wanted and I'd say to myself, 'I need that.' I've never felt that way about clothes or cars or food or anything else." Because Saul seldom gets rid of the volumes he's purchased, his library has grown with the books of many of his favorite authors, including Tim Egan, Barbara Kingsolver, Robert Michael Pyle, Ivan Doig, Wendell Berry, Gary Snyder and Tim McNulty, among others. "The books on your shelves help define who you are," he says. “They are also a window into your past.”
Since the time Village Books began in 1980, Saul has seldom purchased books elsewhere. "My knowledge of the literary world is based on dropping into the store," Saul asserts. "I know VB has people who pay attention to books, and I know I'll find something that makes sense for me." He acknowledges that the pick shelves, where each bookseller has recommended books, has accounted for many of his purchases. "When I find someone who shares my taste in writing, I'm very likely to pick up another book they've recommended," he says. Saul recently took a 6-month sabbatical from the institute during which he did two main things: 1) traveled with his wife Shelley talking with dozens of people outside of his circle—artists, politicians, healthcare professionals, and others— asking the question "what are you paying attention to in the world; what should I be paying attention to?", and 2) reading and writing poetry, some by poets he hadn't read, like Kathleen Flenniken, whom he came to love. Saul is putting the final touches on the book of poetry he wrote during the sabbatical. "Now I need to figure out what to do with it," he muses. Perhaps you'll find it on the shelves of Village Books some day soon.

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Barbara C. Matilsky
available now, paperback, W.W. Norton & Co.
“America’s funniest science writer” (Washington Post) takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: the questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts? Can constipation kill you? Did it kill Elvis? In Gulp we meet scientists who tackle the questions no one else thinks of—or has the courage to ask.

Octopus!: The Most Mysterious Creature in the Sea
Seeing Flowers
by Katherine Harmon Courage

"The exceptional photography (not to mention the fascinating commentary) of this book makes it a detailed and inspirational artistic reference. I love it just as much as I love Seeing Trees!" –Laura P.
With eight arms, three hearts, camouflaging skin, and a disarmingly intelligent look behind its eyes, the octopus appears utterly alien. But octopuses have been captivating humans for as long as we've been catching them. Now, Courage provides an entertaining yet informative romp through the world of these infinitely interesting creatures.
Badluck Way : A Year on the Ragged Edge of the West by Bryce Andrews
available in January, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
While reading the lean prose, I could feel the callouses on my hands and the wildness of the Montana ranch. What starts as a poetic and thoughtful memoir of a modern-day cowboy becomes a balanced portrayal of the struggle between ecologically-conscious cattle ranching and newly reintroduced wolves who threaten the herds. Through Bryce's writing comes understanding and from understanding comes compassion... for both sides of this thorny issue. —Paul

Beautiful Old Dogs: A Loving Tribute to Our Senior Best Friends
HUMOROUS Downton Tabby by Chris Kelly
available in December, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
While this book makes affectionate fun of Downton Abbey, the phenomenally popular TV show where everyone's always getting dressed, it makes a broader humorous point: We treat our cats like high society. Their servants are us. If you live with a cat, the butler, maid, and cook is you. It's our cats' world. We just lint-roll it.
by David Tabatsky and Garry Gross available in November, hardcover, Macmillan
Gandhi once said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way that its animals are treated." How people regard older animals is especially revealing. Beautiful Old Dogs honors our senior best friends and explores their current state of care and custody. This book is inspired by the exquisite photography of Garry Gross.

POETRY For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey
A Great Gift... Poems To Learn By Heart
by Caroline Kennedy
by Richard Blanco
available in November, paperback, Random House
Richard Blanco hit many “firsts” when he was invited to be President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Poet: first openly gay, first immigrant, first Latino. Blanco writes in this little book about the feelings and emotions that came from his invitation, and his struggle with keeping his personal story in balance with the bigger picture of what it means to be “American.” As a Cuban-American myself, I related with Blanco and his desire to honor every part of his heritage. He writes with passion, honesty, and artistic language, and captures the spirit of the writing process well. What I enjoyed most about the book was that the three poems were included in both English and Spanish-- a little treasure for my poetry collection. —Christina
A Great Gift... I Could Chew on This: And Other Poems by Dogs

Rimbaud the Son
by Pierre Michon, translated by Jody Gladding and Elizabeth Deshays available now, paperback, Yale University Press
Rimbaud the Son is now masterfully translated into English, enabling a wide new audience to discover for themselves the author Publishers Weekly called “one of the best-kept secrets of modern French prose." Widely celebrated upon its publication in France, Pierre Michon examines the storied life of the French poet Arthur Rimbaud by means of a new literary genre: a meditation on the life of a legend as witnessed by his contemporaries, those who knew him before the legends took hold.
by Francesco Marciuliano
"When I read I Could Pee on This, I rolled my eyes. Those cats don't know poetry. But these dogs, on the other hand, are like Wordsworth and Dickinson tied into a blindingly brilliant poetic package. These poems speak to me in ways that kibble and Kongs never will." –Charlie

SPIRITUALITY The Hidden Lamp: Stories From Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women edited by Florence Caplow and Susan Moon available in November, paperback, Wisdom Publications
Former Bellingham resident Florence Caplow has written an exciting book: a collection of 100 stories of Buddhist women since the time of the Buddha, many of them lost until this volume. These stories are extraordinary expressions of freedom and fearlessness, and each is accompanied by the commentary of a contemporary woman teacher. As Sharon Saltzberg says, “This is an invaluable resource for practitioners and seekers everywhere. These are treasures unearthed.”
RELIGION A Great Gift...
Zealot, the Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslam
Quiet
available now, hardcover, Random House
With the objectivity of an historian, and the insights of a social anthropologist, Reza Aslan has written Zealot, an account of first century C.E. occupied Palestine. Centuries before the birth of Muhammad it was the Jews vs. the Romans in Palestine; many rebellious Jews became zealots and revolutionaries. Unfortunately, crucifixion was the standard Roman method of publically eliminating rebels. Aslan offers a fascinating window into a turbulent century at the crossroads of cultures. Oh yes, there was an illiterate but charismatic rebel named Jesus who lived there too. —Cindi

CULTURAL CRITICISM
With Charity For All: Why Charities Are Failing and a Better Way to Give
by Ken Stern
available now, paperback, Anchor
by Keith Farnish
available now, paperback, New Society Publishers
If you’re looking for a radical, in-yourface solution to the problem of the industrial machine look no further. Written as a how-to guide to open your mind to corporate, cultural and political brainwashing, it provides some tools to start working against those systems, and the institutions that disempower us. Lest it sound too bleak and anarchist, this book does end on the positive note of needing to build community and offers many steps to be taken in that direction. Nonetheless, this one is not for the faint of heart. —Jessica

Love & Gratitude From the First Ten Years of StoryCorps
My Life in Middlemarch
available now, hardcover, Penguin
by Rebecca Mead
by Dave Isay
Get your hankies out because this book is a tear jerker. Celebrating ten years of StoryCorps, the oral history project that airs weekly on NPR, this latest collection of stories focus on love and gratitude. These excerpts are from radio interviews recorded all over the country, usually between two people who wish to share and preserve their stories. Whether it’s a teacher and student, siblings, married couples, or a parent and child, each person relates a part of their life that has been touched by the relationship. I have always been a huge fan of StoryCorps. It reminds me that even in the most challenging, painful, and dire situations, our human ability to express love and gratitude is remarkable. —Christina
A Laura Favorite! available in January, hardcover, Crown
In this revealing work of reportage and memoir, Rebecca Mead leads us into the life that the novel inspired her to create. Employing a structure that deftly mirrors that of Eliot's masterpiece, this autobiography takes the themes of the novel-the complexity of love, the meaning of marriage, the foundations of morality-and brings them into our world.

The Dark Path: A Memoir by David Schickler

At college he initiates serious conversations about becoming a Jesuit just as he enters a passionate relationship with a vivacious, agnostic young woman. Candid and funny, lyrical and blunt, The Dark Path is an evocative portrayal of one man's struggle with faith and women.
Every Love Story is a Ghost Story: A Life of David Foster Wallace by D.T. Max
available now, paperback, Penguin

Alfred Russel Wallace: Letters from the Malay Archipelago edited by John van Wyhe and Kees Rookmaaker
available in November, hardcover, Oxford
This volume brings together the letters of the great Victorian naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace during his famous travels in the Malay Archipelago, which led him to come independently to the same conclusion as Charles Darwin: that evolution occurs through natural selection. Recently discovered letters shed light on the voyage and on Wallace's reluctance to publish on evolution, and why he famously chose to write to Darwin rather than to send his work to a journal directly. Together the letters form a remarkable and vivid document of one of the most important journeys of the 19th century by a great Victorian naturalist.

FAMILY All Joy and No Fun: The
A Great Gift...
Paradox of Modern Parenthood
by Jennifer Senior
available in January, hardcover, Harper
As a parent, I often reflect upon my relationship with my children. Am I teaching them the right way? Am I helping them find their fullest potential? Am I screwing them up? The questions are endless in my mind about what I’m doing right or wrong as a parent, and usually the focus is on how I affect my children. In Jennifer Senior’s new book though, she takes the reverse approach and looks at how children affect their parents. Are they teaching us the right way? Are they helping us find our fullest potential? And are they screwing us up? Full of facts, figures, and lots of first-hand stories from parents, this book is insightful and even comforting at times. Kids really can bring deep joy into our lives, even if it isn’t always fun. —Christina

Families can pick from various topics and have thoughtful conversation with their kids at the dinner table, in bed, on a walk, in the car, or just about anywhere. I mom approve this book." –Christina

As they struggle to survive in the big city, they realize that finding your uncle in New York is incredibly difficult if you have almost no information about him.
available in November, hardcover, Clarion
"In the beginning, there was nothing but endless flatness. Then came the Carpet…” That's the old story everyone knows and loves. But now the Carpet is home to many different tribes and peoples, and there's a new story in the making. The story of Fray, sweeping a trail of destruction across the Carpet. The story of power-hungry moguls--and of two brothers who set out on an adventure to end all adventures when their village is flattened. It's a story that will come to a terrible end—if someone doesn't do something about it.

The workings of the magic system are intriguing and Serafina’s Baba Yaga encounters are varied and thought-provoking, but it’s Serafina herself who steals the show, finding ways to take control of her own life even when all hope of independence seems lost.” —Rachel H.

The Wolf Princess by Cathryn Constable
available now, hardcover, Scholastic Inc.
“Sophie knows there’s something strange about an obscure Russian princess inviting her and her friends to visit during their vacation, but she’s so caught up in the peculiar wonder of it all that she pushes away any misgivings. This story swept me away with its luscious descriptions of wintery Russia. The tale is magical without any magic, simply for the haunting mystery it evokes. Perfect reading for a chilly winter night, but a captivating story regardless of the season.” —Rachel H.

Perfect Ruin
by Lauren DeStefano available now, hardcover, Simon and Schuster Morgan Stockhour knows getting too close to the edge of Internment, the floating city in the clouds where she lives, can lead to madness. If she ever wonders about the ground, and why it is forbidden, she takes solace in her best friend, Pen, and in Basil, the boy she’s engaged to marry. Then a murder, the first in a generation, rocks the city. With whispers swirling and fear on the wind, Morgan can no longer stop herself from investigating, especially once she meets Judas. Betrothed to the victim, he is the boy being blamed for the murder, but Morgan is convinced of his innocence. Secrets lay at the heart of Internment, but nothing can prepare Morgan for what she will find or whom she will lose.

The Chaos of Stars
by Kiersten White available now, hardcover, HarperCollins On the surface this is a fantasy book, but thematically it’s far more about family. Isadora’s parents are Egyptian Gods and most of her family is immortal, so she’s pretty steamed —and hurt—by the realization that they don’t intend to use all their godly power to make her immortal, too. The wry voice is what really won me over and I laughed aloud more times than I can count. Seriously, if you think your family is complicated you need to read this for some perspective. —Rachel H.
360-671-2626 • 800-392-BOOK • www.villagebooks.com
by Amy Rose Capetta available now, hardcover, Houghton Mifflin This book is so much more fun than it seems at first glance. In a universe vaguely reminescent of Star Wars, humans are a second-class minority, dispersed among the multitudes of alien planets and peoples. Although Cade's primary quest is to rescue her other half (a boy named Xan), this book has very strong themes of friendship and self-discovery, with an adventurous plot and lovable characters. A refreshing return to the classic space adventure! —Rachel M.
Teardrop
by Lauren Kate available now, hardcover, Delacorte Press Never, ever cry… Eureka Boudreaux's mother drilled that rule into her daughter years ago. But now her mother is gone, and everywhere Eureka goes, Ander is there: Ander, the tall, pale blond boy who seems to know things he shouldn't, who tells Eureka she is in grave danger. But Ander doesn't know Eureka's darkest secret: ever since her mother drowned in a freak accident, Eureka wishes she were dead, too. She has little left that she cares about, just her oldest friend, Brooks, and a strange inheritance—a locket, a letter, a mysterious stone, and an ancient book no one understands. The book contains a haunting tale about a girl who got her heart broken and cried an entire continent into the sea. Eureka is about to discover that the ancient tale is more than a story and that Ander might be telling the truth.
