Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader,

If you’ve been to our Fairhaven store in the past few months, you’ve likely experienced at least one of our many changes. There’ve been so many, we’ve dubbed this the Season of Metamorphosis. (Paul just adores big words!) It began May 26th with the installation of our new Mark Twain bench that we featured in the previous issue. Since then, the bench has proved a favorite photo op. Further improvements to the exterior of the buildings included a paint job and the replacement of Paper Dreams' front windows – both were much-needed structural changes. Come by and see the new colors that were inspired by a popular palette back when the building opened in 1891 as the Fairhaven Cash Grocery. Inside the store, all the noise and dust coming from the café space on the mezzanine were evidence of progress at Evolve Chocolates + Café (see page 29). We've also added new tables in the Writers’ Corner thanks to The RE Store's Revision Division, this season’s Round It Up partner (see page 59). More unobtrusive but no less impactful, our Publishing Division has been hard at work improving and expanding our services – stay tuned for upcoming announcements. Additionally, we’ve just hired 11 new bright-eyed and eager employees. Yes, we’ve been busy! Another good word that comes to mind is agrypnia. Although the changes have been many, all of what you love about Village Books and Paper Dreams remains the same. To continue with our gaudiloquence, this fall we're bringing an amazing line-up of authors to Bellingham including Ray Troll, Hank Green, Terry Brooks, Erin Hunter, Marissa Meyer, Leif Enger, and Anne Lamott. In addition to a plethora of regional and local authors, we are hosting Book Group Mixers in Fairhaven and Lynden (see page 7) and speaking out for the freedom to read during Banned Books Week (see page 9). We know we couldn’t do any of this without your ongoing and celeberrimous support, Dear Reader! Thank You.

"Violent Past s, Peaceful Fut ures"

6-9pm at The Majestic - 1027 North Forest, Bellingham, WA

I

n 1982, the United Nations declared September 21 an annual worldwide, 24-hour cease-fire to envision what the world can look like without weapons, violence, and oppression. In solidarity, hundreds will gather in Bellingham for the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center’s 15th annual International Day of Peace celebration, "Violent Pasts, Peaceful Futures" from 6-9 pm, Friday, September 21 at The Majestic, 1027 N. Forest in Bellingham. Village Books and Paper Dreams is proud to once again sponsor this community tradition. The evening’s events include music of love and struggle and the presentation of the Howard Harris Lifetime Peacemaker Award. The award has been given annually since 2005 to a local peacemaker whose life's work is in the spirit of Howard Harris, one of the founders of Bellingham's peace vigil. The original keynote speaker, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, unfortunately had to cancel due to health issues. A new speaker will be announced soon. Back for its second year (and this time, with more food!) a falafel and dessert buffet will be served from 6 -7pm. Guests can pay for dinner on a sliding scale of $5 - $20, depending on their ability to pay. Proceeds benefit the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center. Come and break bread with your community. Twenty community organizations will be on hand during the dinner hour to connect with you. Village Books will be at the event to sell books; 10% of book sales that evening will be donated to the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center. The Whatcom Peace & Justice Center works to create a voice for peace and social justice in Whatcom County through partnerships with local community and religious organizations, direct action, public witness, and education on alternatives to violence and war. We call on our government and society to disavow policies of violence and seek a culture of peace.

READ A BANNED BOOK BANNING BOOKS

B

SILENCES STORIES

anned Books Week 2018, the annual celebration of the freedom to read, is Sept. 23-29. The 2018 theme, “Banning Books Silences Stories,” is a reminder that everyone needs to speak out against the tide of censorship.

Since 1990, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has recorded more than 10,000 book challenges. A challenge is a formal, written complaint requesting a book be removed from library shelves or school curriculum. About half of all challenges are to material in schools or school libraries, and one in four are to material in public libraries. OIF estimates that less than one-quarter of challenges are reported and recorded. The most challenged and/or restricted reading materials have been books SPEAK for children. Even if someone’s motivation to ban a book is well intentioned, the results are harmful to OUT! free speech. “Challenges such as these are censorship because they are an attempt to remove books from circulation, denying someone’s freedom to choose and to think for themselves,” says Village Books co-owner Kelly Evert. “In the case of children’s books, we believe parents should be the ones to decide which books their child should read.” Banned Books Week has reminded us that while not every book is intended for every reader, each of us has the right to decide for ourselves what to read, listen to, or view. Help us celebrate our freedom to read by buying a banned book. You’ll find them proudly displayed in special in-store displays during Banned Books Week.

Top Challenged Books of 2017 The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 354 challenges to library, school and university materials in 2017. Of the 416 books challenged or banned in 2017, the Top 5 Most Challenged Books are 1. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher Originally published in 2007, this international bestseller has resurfaced as a controversial book after Netflix aired a TV series by the same name. This YA novel was challenged and banned in multiple school districts because it discusses suicide.

2. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie Consistently challenged for acknowledging issues such as poverty, alcoholism, and sexuality, this National Book Award winner was challenged in school curriculums because of profanity and situations that werest deemed sexually explicit.

3. Drama by Raina Telgemeier This award-winning, graphic novel was challenged and banned in school libraries because it includes LGBT characters and was considered “confusing.”

Saturday, September 1 10am - 5pm

This critically acclaimed, multigenerational novel was challenged and banned because it includes sexual violence and was thought to “lead to terrorism” and “promote Islam.”

5. George by Alex Gino Written for elementary-age children, this Lambda Literary Award winner was challenged and banned because it includes a transgender child.

MEET THE AUTHOR! Virgil Wander by Leif Enger

available in October, hardcover, Grove Press

Leif Enger was once a reporter and producer for Minnesota Public Radio where, I imagine, he refined his ear for story, character, and language. In his first novel in 10 years and 17 years after his bestselling debut Peace Like a River, Enger’s gifts remain strong. In charming, often masterful writing, he crafts a tale – equal parts mystery, fairy tale, and love story – of an endearing movie house owner, the down-and-out community he loves, and the eccentric characters who live and pass through the town tucked away in the upper Midwest. Curl up and spend time with Virgil Wander. He’s excellent company. –Mary

LEIF ENGER

Saturday, October 20, 7pm Village Books is thrilled to welcome Leif Enger back to Fairhaven! His debut novel, Peace Like a River, has long been, and continues to be, a staff favorite. Join us for one or both of the events we've planned with him: 5:30pm PRIVATE RECEPTION in Evolve Chocolate + Café on the mezzanine level of Village Books in Fairhaven. Tickets available now – find details at villagebooks.com. 7pm PUBLIC READING & SIGNING in the VIllage Books Readings Gallery. This FREE event is open to all!

The Lost Queen

available now, hardcover, Berkley

available in September, hardcover, Touchstone

On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than one hundred words per day, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. Soon women are not permitted to hold jobs. Girls are not taught to read or write. Before, the average person spoke sixteen thousand words each day, but now women have only one hundred to make themselves heard. But for her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

The Lost Queen possesses elements similar to epic series like Outlander and A Song of Ice and Fire – rich characters, compelling narrative style, and a plot line immersed in turbulent times. I fell into the story immediately with its mixture of historical detail and fantastic elements. Plus, my heart belongs to Scotland through and through so reading this novel was a grand experience. –Hannah

by Christina Dalcher

If You Leave Me by Crystal Hana Kim

available now, hardcover, William Morrow & Co.

Historical fiction fans, rejoice! Set in South Korea in 1951-1967, If You Leave Me is a deeply engrossing novel told through multiple narrative voices. Four young refugees are forced to make tough choices with results they cannot predict, and how to choose between love and security is chief among them. I especially recommend this book for fans of Pachinko, but anyone who enjoys deep, sweeping sagas with rich characters will love it. –Stephanie

The Reservoir Tapes by Jon McGregor

available now, hardcover, Catapult

"On the heels of his Man Booker Prizelonglisted Reservoir 13, McGregor brings readers back to that novel's English Midlands village, subtly shining new light on the novel's central mystery: the disappearance of 13-year-old Becky Shaw. [...] As a standalone, the novel is quietly consuming, but as a companion to Reservoir 13, it serves as an exquisite elaboration on the mysterious characters that are the heart of both novels." –Publishers Weekly review

A Philip Marlowe Novel

available in September, hardcover, Knopf

by Lawrence Osborne

available now, hardcover, Hogarth

Lawrence Osborne is a great read for me because of his meticulously beautiful descriptions of international locales — like armchair travel with a psychological thriller thrown in! This time he takes on Mexico with this noir thriller starring the classic character Philip Marlowe. Marlowe is restless in his retirement in Baja, and takes up the case of Donald Zinn, a man possibly murdered for his insurance money. But is he really dead or on the lam? –Laura P.

The Prague Sonata by Bradford Morrow

available in September, paperback, Grove Press

In The Prague Sonata, a young musicologist seeks to solve the mystery behind an 18th century sonata manuscript. Magisterially evoking decades of Prague’s tragic and triumphant history, from the First World War through the soaring days of the Velvet Revolution, and moving from postwar London to the heartland of immigrant America, The Prague Sonata is both epic and intimate, evoking the ways in which individual notes of love and sacrifice become part of the celebratory symphony of life.

The Dinner List by Rebecca Serle

available in September, hardcover, Flatiron Books

At one point or another, we’ve all been asked to name five people, living or dead, with whom we’d like to have dinner. What if that dinner was to actually happen? When Sabrina Nielsen arrives at her 30th birthday dinner she finds at the table not just her best friend, but also her favorite professor from college, her father, her ex-fiance, Tobias, and Audrey Hepburn. As the appetizers are served and conversation begins, it becomes clear that there’s a reason these six people have been gathered together. The Dinner List grapples with the definition of romance, the expectations of love, and how we navigate our way through it to happiness. Oh, and of course, wisdom from Audrey Hepburn. Delicious but never indulgent, sweet with just the right amount of bitter. Bon appetit.

He is being pushed out of his job, his wife doesn't love him any longer, and his son has been diagnosed with autism. He goes on an ill-planned road trip by Greyhound bus to find himself and meet up with an old girlfriend, bringing his angst and fine watch collection with him.

Sea Prayer

by Khaled Hosseini available in September, hardcover, Riverhead Books

A powerful book written by Hosseini in response to the current refugee crisis, Sea Prayer is composed in the form of a letter, from a father to his son, on the eve of their journey. Watching over his sleeping son, the father reflects on the sea-crossing that lies before them. It is also a portrait of their life in Homs, Syria, before the war, and of that city’s transformation into a deadly war zone.

The Labyrinth of the Spirits

Bitter Orange

available in September, hardcover, HarperCollins

available in October, hardcover, Tin House Books

by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

The internationally acclaimed author returns to the magnificent universe he constructed in his bestselling novels The Shadow of the Wind, The Angel’s Game, and The Prisoner of Heaven in this riveting series finale — a heart-pounding thriller and nail-biting work of suspense which introduces a sexy, seductive new heroine whose investigation shines a light on the dark history of Franco’s Spain.

The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock

by Imogen Hermes Gowar available in September, hardcover, HarperCollins

One September evening in 1785, Jonah Hancock hears an urgent knocking on his front door near the docks of London. The captain of one of Jonah’s trading vessels is waiting eagerly on the front step, bearing shocking news. On a voyage to the Far East, he sold Jonah’s ship for something rare and far more precious: a mermaid. Jonah is stunned — the object the captain presents him is brown and wizened, as small as an infant, with vicious teeth and claws, and a torso that ends in the tail of a fish. It is also dead. Imogen Hermes Gowar, Britain’s most-heralded new literary talent, stuns with this spellbinding novel of a merchant, a mermaid, and a madam — an unforgettable confection that explores obsession, wonder, and the deepest desires of the heart with bawdy wit, intrigue, and a touch of magic.

Make a cup of tea, find your favorite blanket and corner on the sofa, and be ready to stay there until you have finished this book. This is a gothic, psychological story that will take hold of you. Bitter Orange is a mystery that starts in the attic of Lyntons, a dilapidated English country mansion. We are introduced to Frances who sees Cara and Peter from the peephole beneath a floorboard. The three find themselves in an entangled life full of lies and longing. Claire Fuller is a masterful storyteller who writes in a psychic, mind-bending style reminiscent of Shirley Jackson, Daphne du Maurier, and Sarah Waters. Fuller's characters stay with you well after you have finished the book and have left all the lights on in the house throughout the night. –Kelly E.

Melmoth

by Sarah Perry

Gothic

available in October, hardcover, Custom House

For centuries, the mysterious darkrobed figure has roamed the globe, searching for those whose complicity and cowardice has fed into the rapids of history’s darkest waters — and now, in Sarah Perry’s breathtaking follow up to The Essex Serpent, it is heading in our direction. Spanning several continents and centuries, Melmoth is a masterpiece of Gothic storytelling. Perry delivers an incandescent and breathtakingly original exploration of the clash of faith and reason; the tension between obligation and reserve; love’s boundless gravity and the terror of engagement. Yet Melmoth is a massive step forward, too, a novel of greater ambition, depth and immediate resonance than anything Perry has written before.

Long awaited, we have a new book by author extraordinaire, Barbara Kingsolver. And she delivers again with this new book. Willa is the matriarch of the Knox family, caring for her aging and cranky father-in-law, her teen daughter, son and his new baby, and encouraging her husband who is working long hours as a professor. Despite all the hard work and education and being middle class in America their house is falling down around them and they cannot keep up with the bills. Willa decides to investigate the history of her home and finds a kindred spirit from 1880, Thatcher Greenwood. A science teacher, Thatcher finds himself under scrutiny as he is told not to tell the exciting new theories published by Charles Darwin. Beautifully written, Unsheltered is the story of two families, in two centuries, trying to deal with changing shifts in cultures. With uncertainty there is always the bond of human spirit, and a shelter we can find within each other. –Kelly E.

This story is an entire world, constructed in incredibly vivid detail, alive and potent, with a beating mystical heart at the center of it. Based on Homer’s Iliad, The Silence of the Girls is a femaledriven narrative that underscores the wreckage of war, invokes the strange twists of fate, and showcases the power of womankind to endure. To read it is an honor; it is the best book I’ve read in quite a bit. –Hannah

Katerina

by James Frey available in September, hardcover, Scout Press

I loved this story because it captured the feeling of Paris as a city, the struggle between hope and despair that comes with being young, and the nostalgia of years gone by and precious things lost. I felt like I was living this book as I read it because the thoughts and feelings Frey captures were so touchingly real and communicated some of my exact impressions about life. This one is an existential trip, fulfilling and heartbreaking. –Hannah

Forest Dark

by Nicole Krauss available now, paperback, Harper Perennial

Forest Dark is a novel complex enough that it probably takes a second reading to fully understand it. Meandering and introspective, it’s so full of Kafka lore and references that it’s no surprise when it becomes Kafka-esque itself. Though not intended for casual readers, it’s immensely well-written and rewarding, a book as ripe for dissection and study as much it is to be appreciated for its narrative. –Stephanie

Women in the 21st century are being pushed backward, losing hard-fought rights and freedoms. Highlighting this dangerous trajectory, Jack Remick’s timely and mindbending novel Citadel asks: what if women were in control? I love historical fiction, particularly when it's about the Pacific Northwest AND when it's by a local author. Anna's Home fits all of these criteria and it does not disappoint. Based on personal letters, journals, and extensive research, Spitzer has woven a story of a daughter of Swedish immigrants who leaves her family in Minnesota to start life with her pastor husband in the Washington territories. Fans of Annie Dillard and J.L. Oakley will love this portrait of our region and will delight in the attention to detail that Spitzer has provided. I’m not at all surprised that this book is full of humor and wit; what else would you expect from vlogbrothers co-creator Hank Green? He’s crafted a unique heroine in April May who unwittingly stumbles upon a giant robot sculpture (who she calls Carl) that is definitely more than it appears. The Sisters of the Winter Wood

Science Fiction/Fantasy

by Rena Rossner

available in September, hardcover, Redhook

What I loved most about this book was not only the fairytale-esque story, which is enchanting on its own, but that its core is about sisterhood, family, and navigating one’s own path in the world. I found it refreshing that Judaism plays a huge role for the sisters in this tale, but unlike many others, it's not about the Holocaust! Told in alternating chapters of prose and verse, the language captured Liba and Laya perfectly and made for a really enjoyable read. An impressive debut from an author I’ll keep my eyes out for in future! –Lauren S.

Foundryside

Community and Encouragement at 8th Annual Chuckanut Writers Conference by Mary Vermillion, Village Books Marketing Director

I

n powerful addresses that bookended the June 22-23 Chuckanut Writers Conference, Washington state Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna and legendary writing instruc-

tor and author Natalie Goldberg urged participants to have the courage and discipline to share their stories. Presented by Village Books and Whatcom Community College, the eighth annual conference was held on Whatcom’s campus and in Fairhaven. In her conference opening, Castro Luna said: “… Writing is hard. And not because of the innumerable considerations: the grammar rules, word choice, syntax, rhyme, line breaks, story arches, character development, plot outlines. No, writing is difficult because it demands that the writer come to it fully – no hiding behind linguistic pyrotechnics. Writing demands that we tell the truth. Our individual truth whatever that may be at the time we sit down to write.” Castro Luna, who immigrated as a child with her family from El Salvador, acknowledged the difficulty of overcoming self-doubt. “Of course, between the murmur and the page there stands a myriad of things that may make it difficult for one to order words on a page,” she said. “This is something I struggle with every single day: Fighting the internalized No!” Thankfully, Castro Luna’s belief that she had a story to tell overcame her internal critic. She describes how poetry encouraged her to bravely tell her truth in her beautiful poem "As Such to Be Chosen" (on this page). In craft-focused workshops and plenary sessions, she and other members of the conference’s incredible faculty encouraged participants (continued on page 24) Shop 24/7 at villagebooks.com

(continued from page 23) to do the same. Many conference participants also scheduled one-on-one pitch sessions with visiting agents or participated in pre-conference master classes that offered intense instruction on specific aspects of writing technique and practice.

“You don't have to be nervous about (writing). You just have to relax and be present and your whole body takes it in. … It's about keeping your hand moving and entering the lineage of writers by our physical act of doing it.” – Natalie Goldberg

In a pre-conference reading at Village Books and in her closing address, Goldberg, author of the bestselling Writing Down the Bones and 14 other books, reminded writers that in addition to having the courage to share their story, they must also develop a writing practice. After inviting the audience to sit and meditate for 5 minutes, Goldberg said to the quiet theater of 200-plus people: “You don't have to be nervous about (writing). You just have to relax and be present and your whole body takes it in. … It's about keeping your hand moving and entering the lineage of writers by our physical act of doing it.” She continued: “What really matters is practicing. ... You have to pick up the pen and write. ... There's no such thing as writer's block. All there is is you physically doing it. It's an athletic activity. You practice.” (Listen to Goldberg’s full speech at chuckanutwriters.com.) The Chuckanut Writers Conference has grown into an essential gathering for writers seeking community, inspiration and wise counsel. Draft No. 4 : On the Writing Process

by John McPhee

WRITING

available in September, paperback, Graywolf Press

Draft No. 4 is a master class on the writer’s craft. In a series of playful, expertly wrought essays, John McPhee shares insights he has gathered over his career and has refined while teaching at Princeton University, where he has nurtured some of the most esteemed writers of recent decades. McPhee offers definitive guidance in the decisions regarding arrangement, diction, and tone that shape nonfiction pieces, and he presents extracts from his work, subjecting them to wry scrutiny. In one essay, he considers the delicate art of getting sources to tell you what they might not otherwise reveal. In another, he discusses how to use flashback to place a bear encounter in a travel narrative while observing that “readers are not supposed to notice the structure. It is meant to be about as visible as someone’s bones.” The result is a vivid depiction of the writing process, from reporting to drafting to revising — and revising, and revising.

It’s open!

IT’S OPEN!

After months of dreaming and planning, hammering and sanding, we’re thrilled to welcome you to the new Evolve Chocolate + Café at Village Books in Fairhaven. Evolve’s owners – Chef Christy Fox and Shannon Fox – led the loving renovation. This dynamic duo is bringing their inspired vision, delicious food, and inventive beverages to the café tucked among the bookshelves and overlooking the Village Green. We couldn’t be more excited! Meet Chef Christy Fox and Shannon Fox of Evolve Chocolate + Café.

read. eat. repeat.

With two laughing wives on the mezzanine… IF Gandhi was a chef, he would cook the change you wish to see in his food. IF Lewis Carroll was a chef, he would transform the menu six times before tea time. IF Leo Tolstoy was a chef, he would cook an epic 20-course meal. We write uniquely, as do we cook. Chef Christy Fox has a knack for combining daring ingredients to create the most impressive meals you’ve ever eaten. One of the SAVORY food items on Evolve Chocolate + Café’s menu is a Forager Rillettes – confit of locally sourced rabbit, mushrooms with house-made cacao and cardamom crackers, blueberry mustard and pickled veggies. It’s a perfect pairing with a celebratory prosecco or a toprated Oregon pinot noir. (We recommend: Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook: Strategies, Recipes, and Techniques of Classic Bistro Cooking, by Anthony Bourdain, hardcover, Bloomsbury) For the SIP portion of the menu, Christy has embraced the medicinal properties of turmeric and utilized it to the max in her kitchen. The popular pick-me-up drink Chilled Awakening with turmeric, ginger, coconut oil, coconut milk and espresso leaves you clear-eyed and ready for whatever lies ahead. The mesmerizing jewel-tone color of local favorite KUMA turmeric liqueur spawned EC+C’s specialty cocktail Kumosa, gently muddled candied ginger, topped with sparkling wine that leaves your palate fresh and zingy. Both drinks pair nicely with a chopped baby green salad with avocado, tomato, Whatcom Blue cheese, salt cured egg, carrot ginger dressing and cacao nibs. (Check out 101 Amazing Uses For Turmeric: Reduce Joint Pain, Soothe Your Stomach, Make a Delicious Dinner, and 98 More!, by Susan Branson, paperback, Familius) SWEET is not always last – at EC+C it can be applied to any meal preparation … along with our beloved chocolate truffles, chocolate cake and chocolate ice cream, just to “sweeten” the deal! Chocolate will come in many forms on the menu from Chicken Molé Poblano Tostada – shredded local, free-range chicken, multiple layers of spices, cacao and chilies topping three crisp corn tortillas with avocado and pickled radish – to Coffee Affogato, our house-made, single-origin coffee liqueur and malted ice cream sprinkled with smoky and nutty cacao nibs. (See SWEET by Yotam Ottolenghi & Helen Goh, hardcover, Ten Speed Press) “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.” – Anais Nin Chef Christy created multiple menu offerings: Breakfast, Lunch, Outdoor Café-grab-n-go, Happy Hour, Weekend Supper Special, Dinner, Tea Parties, Book Club Food Pairings and Special Event Site. Come by for the experience!

How FisherPoets-on-Bellingham-Bay by Buck Meloy

Came to Be

I

n the fall of 1997, a small group of fishermen, and an even smaller group of fisherwomen, got together in Astoria, Oregon, to figure out how to share their experiences with people unfamiliar with how seafood reaches their tables. Their stories, poems, songs and music would help the non-fishing world understand them. So these writers, poets, and musicians got together, with yellow pads and pencils, and by January of 1998 they had a plan. The "Cowboy Poets" annual event in cattle country provided a model. If the cowboys could do it, so could they, and they managed to gather about 15 readers, including themselves, for the first event. February's last Saturday was the date, and a local tavern, the appropriately named "Wet Dog Cafe," agreed to let them do their thing until about 6:30pm when paying customers might show up. Then they had to get out. Next stop was the American Legion Hall, so they traipsed down the rain-slopped street to finish there. Much was learned through that first effort, and a more structured second attempt was made the following February. It had a surprisingly substantial audience, one that thrived on what they saw and heard from an industry that had previously attracted very little public attention. The Fisher Poets Gathering had been born! Following 21 years of steady growth, this year's Astoria Fisher Poets Gathering saw well over one thousand paying fans watch a weekend of presentations in seven different venues. Enthused fisherpeople have taken the idea back to their homes and fishing towns, to places like Cordova, Homer, and Kodiak in Alaska; Portland, Oregon; Seattle; and right here in Bellingham: FisherPoets-on-Bellingham Bay – this September 21. American Like Me : Reflections on a Life Between Cultures

CULTURAL CRITICISM

edited by America Ferrara available in September, hardcover, Gallery

America Ferrera has always felt wholly American, and yet her identity is inextricably linked to her parents’ homeland and Honduran culture. Speaking Spanish at home and eating tamales alongside apple pie at Christmas never seemed at odds with her American identity. Now, in American Like Me, America invites thirty-one of her friends, peers, and heroes to share their stories about life between cultures. We know them as actors, athletes, politicians, and artists. However, they are also immigrants, children or grandchildren of immigrants, indigenous people, or people who otherwise grew up with deep and personal connections to more than one culture. Each of them struggled to establish a sense of self, find belonging, and feel seen.

This Land : America, Lost and Found

by Dan Barry

available September, hardcover, Black Dog & Leventhal

A landmark collection by New York Times journalist Dan Barry, selected from a decade of his distinctive "This Land" columns and presenting a powerful but rarely seen portrait of America. Complemented by the select images of award-winning Times photographers, these narrative and visual snapshots of American life create a majestic tapestry of our shared experience, capturing how our nation is at once flawed and exceptional, paralyzed and ascendant, as cruel and violent as it can be gentle and benevolent.

Literature A Carnival of Losses : Notes Nearing Ninety by Donald Hall

available now, hardcover, Houghton Mifflin

Donald Hall died June 23 — just short of 90. Before he passed, he reflected on aging and his remarkably creative life in a final essay collection that is achingly beautiful in its honesty and humor and a master class in craft. Writer Ann Patchett says: “Donald Hall writes about love and loss and art and home in a manner so essential and direct it’s as if he put the full force of his life on the page.” Absolutely, Ann! –Mary

Essential Essays : Culture, Politics, and the Art of Poetry by Adrienne Rich

available in September, hardcover, W.W. Norton

Not only was Adrienne Rich a poet (one of my favorites), she was also an essayist who thought critically about ideas like motherhood, feminism, and lesbianism. Her writings are canon for me and this new collection, spanning her career from the 1960s to 2008, is a timely reminder for both new and current fans of her work. –Sarah

On the Other Side of Freedom : The Case for Hope by DeRay Mckesson

available in September, hardcover, Viking

The Constitution Demands It : The Case for the Impeachment of Donald Trump

by Ron Fein, John Bonifaz, Ben Clements available in August, paperback, Melville House

Three veteran constitutional attorneys say there’s no way around it: the Constitution demands that Donald Trump must be impeached. And in clear language using compelling logic rooted firmly in the Constitution, they detail why the time to start is now—not in the indefinite future after criminal investigations have ended. In fact, much of Trump’s impeachable conduct lies outside the scope of ongoing federal criminal investigations.

In August of 2014, 29-year-old activist DeRay Mckesson stood with hundreds of others on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, to push a message of justice and accountability. These protests, and others like them in cities across the country, resulted in the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement. Now, in his first book, Mckesson lays out the intellectual, pragmatic political framework for a new liberation movement.

Rising Out of Hatred : The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist

by Eli Saslow

available in September, hardcover, Doubleday

Rising Out of Hatred tells the story of how white-supremacist ideas migrated from the far-right fringe to the White House through the intensely personal saga of one man, Derek, who eventually disavowed everything he was taught to believe, at tremendous personal cost. With great empathy and narrative verve, Eli Saslow asks what Derek’s story can tell us about America’s increasingly divided nature.

To most, it will be a hair-raising revelation that the Cold War did not end in 1991— that it merely evolved, with Trump’s apartments offering the perfect vehicle for billions of dollars to leave the collapsing Soviet Union. In House of Trump, House of Putin, Craig Unger methodically traces the deep-rooted alliance between the highest echelons of American political operatives and the biggest players in the frightening underworld of the Russian Mafia.

History The Spy and the Traitor :

Crash Course : From the Good

The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War

War to the Forever War by H. Bruce Franklin

by Ben Macintyre

available in September, hardcover, Crown

The celebrated author of Double Cross and Rogue Heroes returns with his greatest spy story yet, a thrilling Americans-era tale of Oleg Gordievsky, the Russian whose secret work helped hasten the end of the Cold War. Unfolding the delicious three-way gamesmanship between America, Britain, and the Soviet Union, and culminating in the gripping cinematic beat-by-beat of Gordievsky’s nail-biting escape from Moscow in 1985, Ben Macintyre’s latest may be his best yet.

available in September, hardcover, Rutgers University Press

Crash Course is essential reading for anyone who wonders how America ended up where it is today: with a deeply divided and disillusioned populace, led by a dysfunctional government, and mired in unwinnable wars. It also finds startling parallels between America’s foreign military exploits and the equally brutal tactics used on the home front to crush organized labor, antiwar, and civil rights movements.

The Genius of George Washington and the Victory at Yorktown

by Michael Beschloss

Whether examining Lincoln’s controversial military leadership, Wilson’s idealistic and authoritarian approach to World War I, or LBJ sinking into the quagmire of Vietnam, Beschloss employs deep research and unsurpassed storytelling to bring these presidents to life in moments of public oratory and private doubt. He also charts their relationships with the public, which has consigned them to fame or infamy, and with Congress, which has continually struggled to define the president’s wartime powers.

Harari's unique ability to make sense of where we have come from and where we are going has captured the imaginations of millions of readers. Here he invites us to consider values, meaning, and personal engagement in a world full of noise and uncertainty. When we are deluged with irrelevant information, clarity is power. Presenting complex contemporary challenges clearly and accessibly, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is essential reading.

Fall 2018

Chronicling the final, fateful year of the Revolutionary War, National Book Award winner Philbrick highlights General George Washington's military mastery in understanding that he couldn't win the war without French naval power and shows how the Battle of the Chesapeake — fought without a single American ship — made the victory at Yorktown possible.

Butch Heroes :

21 Lessons for the 21st Century

Armchair Historians Book Group

by Nathaniel Philbrick

Brodell offers a series of 28 portraits of forgotten but heroic figures, each accompanied by a brief biographical note. They are individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced dire punishment for being themselves. Brodell did extensive research for each portrait, piecing together a life from historical accounts, maps, journals, paintings, drawings, and photographs, finding the heroic in the forgotten.

History History American Dialogue : The Founding Fathers and Us by Joseph J. Ellis

available in October, hardcover, Alfred A Knopf

Joseph Ellis looks at four issues: race relations, equality, the constitution, and international relations by examining the lives and philosophies of four of the nation’s founders: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison and George Washington. He then follows each section with an examination of our current situation and the backlash and misconceptions with which we are left. If this seems dry, it is anything but. The book is filled with brilliant insight and clarification. The inconstancies of Jefferson’s racism seem clearer after reading this book. Adams, the consummate student of history, anticipated the economic inequality of the gilded age (or our own.) Madison, a major author of the Constitution, insisted that it was a “living document.” Washington had good reasons for what seem like an isolationist philosophy. The author makes liberal use of letters and other writings of the men he studies, and the book contains detailed end notes and sources. In this short blurb, I can’t possibly do justice to this fascinating volume. I hope it will become required reading in every high school civics class. –Terri

Bunk : The Rise of Hoaxes, Humbug, Plagarists, Phonies, Post-Facts, and Fake News by Kevin Young

available in September, paperback, Graywolf Press

Has the hoax now moved from the sideshow to take the center stage of American culture? Award-winning poet and critic Kevin Young traces the history of the hoax as a peculiarly American phenomenon — the legacy of P. T. Barnum’s “humbug” culminating with the currency of Donald J. Trump’s “fake news.” Young then turns to the hoaxing of history and the ways that forgers, plagiarists, and frauds invent backstories and falsehoods to sell us lies about themselves and about the world in our own time. Disturbingly, Young finds that fakery is woven from stereotype and suspicion, with race being the most insidious American hoax of all. Brilliant and timely, Bunk asks what it means to live in a post-factual world of “truthiness” where everything is up for interpretation and everyone is subject to a contagious cynicism that damages our ideas of reality, fact, and art.

The Oath and the Office : A Guide to the Constitution for Future Presidents

by Corey Brettschneider

available in September, hardcover, W.W. Norton

The Oath and the Office is the book we need whether we are voting for or running to become president of the United States. Constitutional law scholar and political science professor Brettschneider guides us through the Constitution and explains the powers — and limits — that it places on the presidency. From the document itself and from American history’s most famous court cases, we learn why certain powers were granted to the presidency, how the Bill of Rights limits those powers, and what “we the people” can do to influence the nation’s highest public office — including, if need be, removing the person in it.

Frederick Douglass : Prophet of Freedom by David W. Blight

available in October, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

As a young man, Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. With dignity and great intelligence he bore witness to the brutality of slavery. In this remarkable biography, David Blight has drawn on new information held in a private collection that few other historians have consulted, as well as recently discovered issues of Douglass’s newspapers.

When Nell Painter turned 64 she decided NOT to retire. She decided to start over. Already a successful author (The History of White People) and an academic, Nell had a passion for art that had called to her all her life. Now was the time to jump in and follow a long-shelved dream. She called herself "an old black woman who didn't fit in" among the younger, zanier, diverse art students, yet she persisted! Travel with her through the art studios, the vast media methods, the ageism, the racism, and explore the artwork of contemporary, yet unknown, artists. –Cindi

In 2012, Sarah Ruhl was a distinguished, two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist. Max Ritvo, a student in her playwriting class at Yale University, was an exuberant, intensely curious and gifted poet in remission from pediatric cancer. Over the next four years — in which Ritvo’s illness returned and his health began to decline — the two traded a series of letters that spark with urgency, humor, and the desire for connection. Letters from Max is a deeply moving portrait of a friendship, and a shimmering exploration of love, art, mortality, and the afterlife.

Here, Laymon asks himself, his mother, his nation, and us to confront the terrifying possibility that few in this nation actually know how to responsibly love, and even fewer want to live under the weight of actually becoming free.

The four most powerful African-American women in politics share the story of their friendship and how it has changed politics in America. This book is a sweeping view of American history from the vantage points of four women who have lived and worked behind the scenes in politics for over 30 years. Over the years, they’ve filled many roles: in the corporate world, on campaigns, in unions, in churches, in their own businesses, and in the White House. Through all of this, they’ve worked with those who have shaped our country’s history, focused on the larger goal of “hurrying history” so that every American — regardless of race, gender or religious background — can have a seat at the table.

But those stories have always been locked away — until now. Who are our ancestors? Where did they come from? The Dinosaur Artist : Obsession, Betrayal, and the Quest for Earth’s Ultimate Trophy

by Paige Williams

by Rachel Love Nuwer

available in September, hardcover, Hachette Books

available September, hardcover, Da Capo Press

New Yorker magazine staff writer Paige Williams delves into the riveting and perilous world of fossil collectors in this true tale of one Florida man's attempt to sell a dinosaur skeleton from Mongolia. The Dinosaur Artist is a stunning work of narrative journalism about humans' relationship with natural history and a seemingly intractable conflict between science and commerce. The Dinosaur Artist illuminates the history of fossil collecting — a murky, sometimes risky business, populated by eccentrics and obsessives, where the lines between poacher and hunter, collector and smuggler, enthusiast and opportunist, can easily blur.

Journalist Rachel Nuwer plunges the reader into the underground of global wildlife trafficking, a topic she has been investigating for nearly a decade. Through exhaustive first-hand reporting that took her to 10 countries, Nuwer explores the forces currently driving demand for animals and their parts; the toll that demand is extracting on species across the planet; and the conservationists, rangers, and activists who believe it is not too late to stop the impending extinctions.

Poetry If They Come for Us : Poems

The Dark Between Stars

available in August, paperback, One World

available in September, paperback, Atria

After being orphaned as a young girl, Asghar grapples with coming-of-age as a woman without the guidance of a mother, questions of sexuality and race, and navigating a world that put a target on her back. Asghar’s poems at once bear anguish, joy, vulnerability, and compassion, while exploring the many facets of violence: how it persists within us, and how it is inherited across generations.

Atticus' writing blooms in seeming simplicity, until you sit with it for a moment and start to let his words come alive in your heart and mind. Ranging in subject matter from the mundane to the magical, this second volume of work from the anonymous poet is dazzling and delightful with its fantastic prose-poetry and photography. –Hannah

The RE Store

and Environmental Heroes Round It Up to the Nearest Dollar and Make a Change Locally

Thanks to your support, Round It Up, our amazingly simple giving program to support local nonprofits, is rolling into its successful second year. Each season, we feature a new partner that will benefit when you choose to increase your purchase to the nearest dollar. The non-profit receives the Round It Up difference. Our partner this fall is The RE Store. The RE Store is non-profit program with a retail location in the Fountain District of Bellingham. The RE Store exists to divert as much reuseable material as possible from the landfill and to build a culture of reuse in our community. The retail location features salvaged and reclaimed building materials, vintage decor, and a facility to receive lightly used donated items. The RE Store was founded in 1993 and is a program of RE Sources for Sustainable Communities. RE Source's vision is to see people living satisfying lives in accord with the ecosystem we depend on – generation after generation. Each year The RE Store: • Saves the community over $1 million in building materials costs, • Diverts nearly 3 million pounds of quality building supplies from the landfill, and • Provides more than 1,500 hours of accessible on-the-job training opportunities. Every dollar raised through the store’s retail sales and services goes back into their work to conserve valuable natural resources, provide job training to displaced workers, and advocate for a strong, resilient local economy. In their warehouse, you can find the Revision Division woodshop, a design lab for the design and construction of hand-made furnishings from reclaimed materials. Village Books has a long history of working with the Revision Division to craft furniture for the store, including the bench in the children’s section and our re-imagined Writers Corner. Visit Evolve Chocolate + Café to see the tables the Revision Division created from an abandoned homestead in the county. The RE Store is also home to the Sustainable Living Center, a meeting space and conference room open for public rental. Winnie's Great War:

Squirm

by Lindsay Mattick and Josh Greenhut illustrated by Sophie Blackall available in September, hardcover, Little, Brown and Company

During World War I, an extraordinary bear named Winnie was in the Canadian Veterinary Corps. Winnie eventually went on to meet a young boy named Christopher Robin Milne and inspire the everlasting story of Winnie-the-Pooh. Winnie's Great War tells Winnie's story through the bear's own eyes, pieced together from the real wartime journal of the Captain who cared for her. This story is exceptional, and a must-have for anyone who has visited Pooh and friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. –Hana This is the story of Winnipeg, the real little bear behind A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, and how she went from the woods of Canada to becoming a military mascot and then all the way to the London Zoo. Winnie’s Great War is an absolute delight for all ages… and a bit of a tearjerker as well. I can see it becoming the favorite of many a family, if not a classic in its own right! –Hannah

Young Adult Sawkill Girls

The Muse of Nightmares

by Claire Legrand

By Laini Taylor

available in October, hardcover, Katherine Tegen Books

available in October, hardcover, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Prepare yourselves for the dazzling follow up to Strange the Dreamer. I haven’t been this excited about a sequel since Harry Potter, in all seriousness. The story starts right where we left Lazlo and Sarai, and I promise you won’t be disappointed. Her beautiful writing shines through every page, and the way she fleshes out her characters even more is impressive. Plus, she weaves in links to her previous trilogy, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, so if you read closely, you’ll spot some easter eggs! –Lauren S.

The War Outside by Monica Hesse

available in September, hardcover, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

It's 1944 and World War II is raging across Europe and the Pacific. The war seemed far away from Margot in Iowa and Haruko in Colorado – until they were uprooted to a dusty Texas internment camp, all because of the places their parents once called home: Germany and Japan. With everything around them falling apart, Margot and Haruko find solace in their growing, secret friendship. But in a prison the government has deemed full of spies, can they trust anyone?

Dry

by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman available in October, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

It's present day-ish So Cal and the government has implemented something called the Tap-Out. All water has been turned off, reserving what little there is for "critical services" which do not include the general public. Local teen Alyssa watches as her community goes animal in the days following the shut off. Her parents disappear in an effort to get water and she and her little brother are left to fend for themselves in an increasingly desperate situation. With Dry, the Shusterman father/son duo has created a scenario that feels all too believable and is totally unsettling. You'll never take water for granted again after this one. Prepare to be thirsty. –Claire

Fall 2018

The author of Furyborn is back but this time with something completely different: an equally awesome, suspenseful paranormal thriller. I loved the myth that she builds in this story, but by far my favorite aspect is the three diverse, imperfect female characters who are the heart and soul of this book. It’s all about female camaraderie and fighting off the evil lurking on the island together and I LOVED it! –Lauren S.

Sawkill Girls When a diverse trio of girls battle a demon from another dimension, things are bound to get dark. Sawkill Girls was everything I have wanted out of YA literature in the last few years. It has heart and strength as the protagonist must battle forces beyond their understanding, as well as ancient misogyny and their own misunderstandings. Claire Legrand is one of my favorite authors and this book is another example of why she is so incredible. –Hayden

Do you ever wonder about Elizabeth Frankenstein? The mostly-absentfrom-the-tale adopted sister of Victor? Well, look no further! Young Adult Part of Your World:

Darius the Great Is Not Okay

A Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell

available in September, hardcover, Disney Press

If you're like me then you have reverse Ariel syndrome — all you want is to live under the sea. Splash into an alternate universe where Ariel didn't defeat Ursula OR break Prince Eric from his stupor OR save King Trident. True to the characters and seamlessly woven into the Disney Classic, make this epic "tail" a Part of Your World. –Abbie S. "The Little Mermaid" was one of my favorite stories growing up. Now that I am older, I am thrilled to read a darker, even more fantastical version of the story. It is obvious that Liz Braswell has amazing enthusiasm for fairy tales; she brings Ariel's world to life in vivid detail and this novel is certainly one to dive into. –Hannah

by Adib Khorram

available now, hardcover, Dial Books

Darius doesn't fit. He's not American enough. And when his family travels to Iran for the first time in his lifetime, he worries he won't be Persian enough. Darius's tale is simply addicting. Khorram tackles family, what it means to be who you are, and living with clinical depression (especially when those around you don't understand it), all while breaking down toxic masculinity with grace, heart, and just the right amount of tea and Star Trek references. –Hana

Sanctuary

The Truth Lies Here

available now, hardcover, Simon Pulse

available now, hardcover, Harper Teen

In the future, some people, like Kenzie and her family, are citizens of corporations, while the less fortunate are government citizens. This unique yet somehow logical idea, along with the blurb's promise of an attempted prison escape, a hostage situation, and the questioning of long-held beliefs, drew me into Sanctuary. The characters were just as enjoyable as the setting and plot. I am ready for a sequel! –Brynna K. age 18

In The Truth Lies Here, Lindsey Klingele explores themes of truth, belief, family, and the past. The summer before her senior year, aspiring journalist Penny returns to her childhood home with the hopes of writing an article for her application to Northwestern about the town's economic decline. As she conducts interviews, however, she notices some odd patterns, and she and a couple old friends begin to investigate further. The story turns into a mystery, and it is unclear whether the answer will be realistic or fantastical. –Brynna K. age 18

But when her father sells her off to be the high prince's bride, her life spirals out of control. Starting with a shooting at her wedding and ending in ways Mia could never have imagined, this story is full of cliff hangers big and small to grab you and keep you hooked. –Kamden I. age 15

In Another Time

by Lindsey Klingele

We Regret to Inform You by Ariel Kaplan

available now, hardcover, Knopf

We Regret to Inform You by Ariel Kaplan challenges the idea that high school students must always be in competition. She introduces Mischa, a high school senior who has done everything right in order to assure her future. You empathize with her as she has to confront her feelings surrounding college acceptance after being denied. Kaplan looks into the deepest, darkest fears of any academic overachiever in having to face the idea that filling out all the right boxes might still not be enough. Kaplan’s book resonates with anyone who had ever gone to college, is going to college, or wants to. –Kira M. age 16

by Caroline Leech

available now, hardcover, Harper Teen

In Another Time by Caroline Leech surprised me with how much I enjoyed it! The story follows Maisie, a member of the Woman's Timber Corps during World War II. During her time with the corps, she meets a man named John Lindsey and they fall in love. I had never heard of the Woman's Timber Corps before and it was interesting to learn about it. Maisie was a great character — she really stood up for herself while still helping John with his struggles. All in all this was a great historical fiction read. –Sarah K. age 16

A Heart In a Body In the World

Broken Things

by Deb Caletti

by Lauren Oliver

available in September, hardcover, Simon Pulse

available in October, hardcover, Harper Teen

It is not an exaggeration to claim that I did not put this book down once in the duration of reading it. I couldn't. Annabelle's story swept me up and left me feeling torn open — everything about it was so shockingly real, so relevant. She speaks of unwilling activism after a traumatic event shakes her world, and how facing the truths in the present moment is one of the most challenging tasks to face. Caletti's novel is more than a story; it's a work of art, and it's a piece of literature that speaks to a heartbreaking epidemic truth faced in the United States. But most importantly, it is brutal, sincere, and eyeopening all at the same time, and it demands to be read. –Abby D. age 18

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Janice Kiersten White

available in September, hardcover, Delacorte

Lauren Oliver has a knack for writing creepy, fascinating stories-Panic, Vanishing Girls — and her latest novel, Broken Things, follows suit. Broken Things follows three girls, Brynn, Mia, and Summer-except Summer is dead, and everyone in their small town believes that Brynn and Mia murdered her five years ago. Banding together with some new and old friends, Brynn and Mia set out to find the truth of what happened to Summer all those years ago. I raced through this all in one sitting, and I loved every dark, twisty minute of it. –Hannah M. age 19

When I heard that Kiersten White, one of my favorite authors, was coming out with a retelling of Frankenstein, I was VERY excited to get my hands on a copy. The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein is creepy and eerie in the best possible way, and I love that we get to see the story from Elizabeth’s point of view. As with all of Kiersten White’s novels, this one is fabulously plotted and completely enthralling. –Hannah M. age 19
