A Magazine for the Northwest’s Most Avid Readers

ROUND IT UP It Makes Cents

T

his summer, Village Books and Paper Dreams proudly introduced Round It Up, our new, amazingly simple giving program for local nonprofits. Each season, we’ll feature a different partner that will benefit when you choose to Round It Up, increasing your purchase to the nearest dollar. The nonprofit will receive the difference. Our first non-profit partner was Recreation Northwest. During June, July and August, over 1,000 customers rounded up their Village Books and Paper Dreams purchases to support Recreation Northwest’s efforts to clean up trails in Fairhaven Park and to get more people outdoors through their Parkscriptions Program.

In September and October, the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center (WDRC) will be our Round It Up partner. The WDRC offers conflict prevention and intervention services for businesses, organizations, individuals, and families. On a prevention level, the WDRC seeks to build the capacity of community members to better manage conflict as it arises, and to learn ways to minimize the possibility of it occurring. Please join us in supporting their meaningful work by rounding up your purchases. Thank you!

Know you’ve made a difference in our community.

Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader,

For us, autumn is always a time for reflection and hope ... a time to think back to summer vacation and the fun we had with family and friends and the anticipation as kids head back to school: pencils sharp, erasers still pink, crisp air and pumpkins turning orange and ripening on the vine. It also brings new reading potential as we find ourselves wanting to nestle into a cozy corner of the sofa with a hot cup of tea and a new book. Authors bring delightful new stories to us in the autumn and it is this excitement that stirs in booksellers as we share them with you, our devoted customers. We hope you enjoy reading about all the new books our Fairhaven and Lynden staff are passionate about and we look forward to talking to you personally about our newest favorites. We have a lot of exciting events this time of year. In September, Paul and Kelly tour the San Juans with author Jim Lynch on the Schooner Zodiac for our second Books A'Sail, our book group at sea (see page 10). Our favorite Seattle librarian and literary critic Nancy Pearl will be joining us not once but twice for her new novel and the Annual Literacy Breakfast (see pages 11 & 41). Banned Books week is the last week of September. This is a favorite for staff as we enjoy the heated discussions that ensue when we see the list of personal beloved books that have reached the banned book list. We look forward to the day when we no longer need to have a Banned Books Week. Look for a pair of new October events in Fairhaven and Lynden that we hope will become an annual tradition: these Book Group Mixers (see page 4) will bring people together with the same passions ... reading books, talking about books, and, of course, wine. And helping us to spread the word about all these great happenings are our two newest additions to our marketing team, Mary Vermillion and Abbie Schollmeier (see page 5). As always, we are ever thankful to you Dear Reader, for being part of our Village. Happy Reading!

–Kelly, Sarah, and Paul

Our Super Power is a Wise &

WONDERFUL

STAFF of

Local Booksellers

D

id you know Village Books and Paper Dreams employs 50 local community members? According to our friends at Sustainable Connections, small local businesses like Village Books are the largest employer nationally and, in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. We also know the personal interests and skills of our wise and wonderful staff are what make our business distinctive and truly rewarding to shop. When you have a team of this size, there’s bound to be change. We recently celebrated major milestones. When 10-year employee Jonica Todd retired, it created a great opportunity for bookseller Lauren Sommer, who succeeded Jonica as a book buyer. Book buyer Joan Terselich marked her 20th year at Village Books in May. In celebration, owners Paul Hanson, Kelly Evert and Sarah Hutton presented Joan with an all-expense-paid trip of her choosing. Read about Joan’s adventure on page 40. There have been changes within our marketing team, too. Mary Vermillion joined Village Books and Paper Dreams as its marketing director in May. She will work with owners Kelly, Sarah and Paul to develop strategies that further connect Village Books with the community and raise awareness of the store’s programs and services. "We're excited to welcome Mary into the Village Books and Paper Dreams team,” Paul said. “We've known her for many years because she is an avid reader and writer who is actively involved with community organizations Village Books supports. The grace, wisdom, and experience she brings will help us to expand our community building efforts." And 2016 Western Washington University graduate and bookseller Abbie Schollmeier took over our digital marketing when Amy Blackwood left in July to focus on her writing and editing business. Prior to moving into the digital marketing role, Abbie was on the floor as a bookseller and behind the scenes working in inventory and online orders. "Abbie has an incredibly valuable perspective from her previous roles here at Village Books," Kelly said. "We love the energy and creativity she brings to Village Books and Paper Dreams digital presence, which includes our social media, website and customer emails." On the floor, you’ll meet newly hired booksellers: Bellingham based Western Washington University students Emma Bachmeier, Candee Blanc, Kelli Terpsma, and Clarissa Williams; Lynden based WWU students Hannah Emory and Lauryn Paoli; Lynden local Sofia Bouma; and Bellingham locals Adam Kane, Jenni McDowell, and Etta Morris. At press time, we were in the process of hiring additional team members to help you while shopping at Village Books and Paper Dreams. We hope you’ll drop by to say hello! Whether novice or veteran, we’re all excited to carry on Village Books and Paper Dreams tradition of personally connecting customers with books you love to read and gifts you love to share. We are grateful for your support. Speaking of support, keep an eye out for the Village Books Speed Readers in the upcoming Bellingham Traverse on Saturday, September 16th. CHUCK'S

BIG RIDE redux I

A 2000 Mile Fundraiser - Still a Chance to Donate

n the summer of 2015 Chuck set out to ride his bicycle from Bellingham to his hometown of Galva, Illinois — a distance of about 2400 miles. Things went well until the 37th riding day when he was attacked by dogs, thus ending the fundraising ride that had yielded pledges of nearly $30,000. Fortunately, most folks honored their pledges…as did Chuck. Two years have passed and Chuck’s ready to climb back on the bike. Beginning the ride on September 1st where he went down and, after saying hello to those dogs, he’ll pedal on to Bar Harbor, Maine—a distance of about 2000 miles. Once again, Chuck is pledging $1 per mile to each of three organizations: • Whatcom Community Foundation • Whatcom Community College • The Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc)

8

Fall 2017

Chuck hopes you’ll join him in pledging your support to one or more of these. You may pledge as little as 1¢ per mile for a total of $20—less than lunch in many places. Or, you can join Chuck and pledge $1 per mile…or more. These are all very well run organizations that will put your donations to good use. See the links on villagebooks.com to pledge. Links are available on the Village Books website so you can pledge, visit the sites of each of organization, and see Chuck’s blog, where he’ll be chronicling his ride. Chuck's ride is sponsored in part by BodyFloat Kinekt Seat Post, Coros LINX Smart Helmet, and Fairhaven Bicycle.

Banned Books Week Celebrates Our Right to Read Mark Banned Books Week with Village Books and Paper Dreams

B

anned Books Week, the annual celebration of the freedom to read, begins September 24th at Village Books and Paper Dreams. For this year’s celebration, the national coalition of organizations that sponsors Banned Books Week will emphasize the importance of the First Amendment, which guarantees our inherent right to read. According to the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) – which tracks reports of book challenges and bans and compiles an annual Top Ten Challenged Books List—there was an alarming 17% increase in book censorship complaints in 2016. Since most challenges are not reported, the actual number is probably much higher. Even more disturbing, while only 10% of the titles reported to OIF are normally removed from the institutions receiving the challenges, half of the most frequently challenged books were banned last year. The Banned Books Week Coalition (BBWC) is responding with “Our Right To Read,” a celebration of the diverse range of ideas found in books, and our right as citizens to make our own intellectual choices. Village Books will join the celebration with window displays, a public “Read In” of select banned books, and other activities. Visit villagebooks. com for the full list of activities. Then, join the Village Books staff in support of the freedom of ideas.

The right to express, access, and discuss a wide range of ideas is integral to our free and open society. -Sarah Hutton, Village Books co-owner

“The right to express, access, and discuss a wide range of ideas is integral to our free and open society,” says Village Books co-owner Sarah Hutton. “Book bans diminish that right and create divisions. We invite our community to join us in this celebration of freedom of speech and freedom of ideas.” The Banned Books Week Coalition is an alliance of organizations joined by a commitment to increase awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom to read. The Coalition seeks to engage various communities and inspire participation in Banned Books Week through education, advocacy, and the creation of programming about the problem of book censorship.

FICTION

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

available in September, hardcover, Penguin Press

Shaker Heights is a suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned out just perfectly, from the houses to the winding streets. Mia Warren and her daughter Pearl arrive and rent a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and her daughter Pearl and the Richardsons four children become close. But when the Richardson's friends attempt to adopt a Chinese American baby, a custody battle ensues that divides the town and puts Mia in an awkward situation. Little Fires Everywhere really delves deep into the emotional journey of what it means to be a mother. And what we, as women, will do to save our children and family. –Kelly E. “I read Little Fires Everywhere in a single, breathless sitting. With brilliance and beauty, Celeste Ng dissects a microcosm of American society just when we need to see it beneath the microscope. Be ready to be wowed by Ng’s writing—and unsettled by the mirror held up to one’s own beliefs.” –Jodi Picoult

A Column of Fire by Ken Follett

available in September, hardcover, Viking

In 1558, the ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn apart by religious conflict. The real enemies, then as now, are not the rival religions. The true battle pitches those who believe in tolerance and compromise against the tyrants who would impose their ideas on everyone else—no matter what the cost.

FICTION

Thalia : A Texas Trilogy by Larry McMurtry

available in September, hardcover, Liveright

Larry McMurtry burst onto the American literary scene with a force that would forever redefine how we perceive the American West. His first three novels— Horseman, Pass By (1961), Leaving Cheyenne (1963), and The Last Picture Show (1966)—all set in the north Texas town of Thalia after World War II, are collected here for the first time. From a cattle ranch rivalry that confirms McMurtry's "full- blooded Western genius" (Publishers Weekly) to a love triangle involving a cowboy, his rancher boss, and wife, and finally to the hardscrabble citizens of an oil-patch town trying to keep their only movie house alive, McMurtry captures the stark realities of the West like no one else.

Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin

available now, hardcover, Algonquin

When Aviva, a young congressional intern, has an af fair with the Congressman, she decides to keep a blog about it (It’s anonymous, right? No one will know!). When the affair is revealed, her blog is identified and her reputation is ruined. Unable to get a job, Aviva moves away and creates a whole new life, and name, for herself. This novel is incredibly topical, as Zevin masterfully describes the double standard women face, and not just in politics. This is a brilliant, moving story that needs to be shared again and again. –Lauren

The Age of Perpetual Light by Josh Weil

available in September, hardcover, Grove Press

Josh Weil brings together stories selected from a decade of work in a stellar new collection. Beginning at the dawn of the past century in the early days of electrification, and moving into an imagined future in which the world is lit day and night, The Age of Perpetual Light follows deeply-felt characters through different eras in American history. Brilliantly hewn and piercingly observant, these tales speak to the all-too-human desire for advancement and the struggle of wounded hearts to find a salve, no matter what the cost.

Under a Pole Star by Stef Penney

available in September, hardcover, Quercus

Set against the stark, timeless beauty of northern Greenland, and fin-de-siècle New York and London, Penney has written a compelling look at the dark side of the golden age of exploration, a study of the corrosive power of ambition, and an epic, incendiary love story. "A first-rate gripper with a notably sensual as well as psychological understanding of its main characters." —Globe and Mail

Jamie Ford, author of The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, has crafted a touching, heart wrenching story about Ernest, the half Chinese orphan who was raffled off at the first Seattle World's Fair in 1909. He is bought to live and work at a high class brothel, where he meets two girls who turn into the only family he has ever had in his life. Set in two different time periods in Seattle's history, he's created wonderfully real, brave, and hopeful characters in Ernest, Maisie, and Fahn. Ford is a truly talented storyteller and I loved it. –Lauren So. Ernest is such a compelling character. This is a delightful story with history of Seattle written in. SHORT STORIES

Five-Carat Soul

by Jeffrey Eugenides

18

There are novels that deepen and expand the way we see the world. Miss Burma does that on both a deeply personal and a political-historical level. Based on the lives of her mother and grandparents whose lives were all an intrinsic part of Burma’s history during its transition from a British colony into war and political repression. It’s clear that Craig’s acting background informs her writing in the way she conveys the complex, intimate inner workings of the characters in contrast with their outer lives. This depth, combined with historical revelations of the time, including the CIA’s involvement, left me satisfied, enlightened, and yearning to learn more. –Paul

The stories in Five-Carat Soul spring from the place where identity, humanity, and history converge. They’re funny and poignant, insightful and unpredictable, imaginative and authentic—all told with McBride’s unrivaled storytelling skill and meticulous eye for character and detail. He writes with humor and insight about how we struggle to understand who we are in a world we don’t fully comprehend.

Every page had me craving to know what happened to teenage sisters, Cass and Emma. available in September, paperback, Arcade

Historical fiction, mystery, and crime meld seamlessly in Graeme Macrae Burnet’s Man Booker-nominated novel. Roderick Macrae might commit and confess to the triple murder in the first pages, but the real work is reading between the lines of his confession to understand why he did it. The true motive is only hinted at, but points to a much darker motive than he will admit. –Stephanie

Deep in the heart of Mexico City, Ana spends her days buried in Agatha Christie novels to forget the mysterious death of her little sister years earlier. Over the summer she decides to plant a milpa in her backyard, and as she digs the ground and plants her seeds, her neighbors in turn delve into their past. In prose that is dazzlingly inventive, funny and tender, Laia Jufresa immerses us in the troubled lives of her narrators, deftly unpicking their stories to offer a darkly comic portrait of contemporary Mexico, as whimsical as it is heart-wrenching.

Lucky Number Seven Chuckanut Writers Conference Marks Successful Seventh Season by Mary Vermillion, Village Books Marketing Director

A

few days before the June 23rd and 24th Chuckanut Writers Conference, I saw former Village Books events coordinator lNan Macy on the main floor of Village Books. A member of the inaugural conference planning team, Nan is writing a book and told me that just a day or so before she had decided to register for the seventh annual conference. Her trigger? Nature writer and environmental activist Kathleen Dean Moore was on the faculty. For Nan, the chance to learn from a writer she deeply admires was impossible to pass up. And that’s how it goes with the Chuckanut Writers Conference, a partnership between Village Books and Whatcom Community College. Each person who attends the annual gathering of writers comes for very personal reasons. For Nan, it was the chance to gain inspiration from a favorite writer. For others, the conference is a time to focus and polish their craft. For those who sign up for a pitch session with an agent, it’s a first step to see if they’re on the right track to possible publication. While the goals vary, everyone has one thing in common: a love of the written word. That shared appreciation creates what feels very much like a gathering of friends. Veterans who have attended all seven conferences greet each other at the bookstore we set up on campus. Faculty buy books written by other faculty members … and ask for autographs. New friendships are made during breaks on WCC’s sunny open plaza. Writers achieve a-ha moments in intimate break-out sessions with respected authors.

Jessica Lohafer

Faculty tell us Chuckanut is the friendliest conference they attend. For the past three years, conference coordinator Jessica Lohafer has helped to set that tone. An accomplished poet, Jessica is also a world-class hugger and first-rate advocate for writers of all ages. This was her last conference as coordinator. We’re placing bets as to when she’ll return as faculty. Thank you, Jessica, for your attention to detail, your inspired suggestions of new voices as teaching faculty, and for the energy you shared with all who attended or planned the conference.

Jessica is leaving the conference in the capable hands of new coordinator Kaity Teer. Our organizing committee of Whatcom Community College and Village Books staff is already planning for 2018 by reviewing feedback from this year’s attendees and starting our list of dream team faculty. We hope you’ll join us for next year's conference. Oh, and one more thing about Nan’s 2017 Chuckanut Writers Conference. Joan

Hits a Milestone 20 Years of Sharing a Passion for Books by Sarah Hutton, Village Books & Paper Dreams Co-Owner

I

f I think of 20 years as 20 years, it seems like a long time. If I think of 20 years ago as 1997, it seems like just yesterday. If I try to think of Village Books without Joan, who celebrated 20 years with us this year, it’s nigh impossible. Her hard work, dedication, and great recommendations have proved crucial to our success. And one of the traditions we’re proud to carry on is celebrating our employees who reach this milestone with a trip to the destination of their choice. Joan, in keeping with her kind heart and fierce love of the Pacific Northwest, chose to share this trip with her family and had a great time exploring our corner of the country. Joan traveled in Seattle, Anacortes, Celebrates with Family! and Bellingham with her niece's family including children Tim, 13; Magdalena, 11; and Tobias, 6. They spent time enjoying the Pike Place Market and a delicious Indian dinner in Seattle. Highlights for the kids included a trip to the Boeing Future of Flight Center that interested Tim, who enjoys tech and engineering; the Seattle Aquarium and PacMam in Anacortes for Magdalena, who loves marine biology; and, of course, a monorail ride for train-loving Tobias. Closer to home, everyone had a blast whale-watching and experiencing the Farmers Market and our local museums. Reflecting on the time spent with her family, Joan said, “I had lots of fun with my family, cooking together and sharing meals, getting to know the kids better, including compassionate tech tutorials for auntie (me), and a newly formed mutual appreciation society with my family and cats. It was very special for me to be able to treat my family to their first Pacific Northwest experience. The kids had never been outside of Colorado!” We’re glad that everyone had a wonderful time and are truly appreciative of Joan and all of the hard work she has done through the years. Thank you, Joan!

SHOP AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE

with products crafted with love and hope We’re proud to offer two new product lines from companies that are helping to power change.

SUDARA – comfortable apparel, powerful impact On a 2005 trip to India, Sudara founder Shannon Keith heard stories of women who were sold into sex slavery or were at high risk of being forced into the sex trade because they lacked an education or the resources to, truly, have a choice. From that experience grew Sudara, which offers living-wage employment as a pathway to freedom for women and their families. The Bend, Ore. company partners with sewing centers in India to teach women to make the company’s line of loungewear, T-shirts, robes and kids clothes. Village Books and Paper Dreams co-owner Kelly Evert discovered the line and can personally attest to the quality, style and comfort. “When I’m ready to curl up with a good book, I reach first for my Sudara loungewear pants,” she says. “I love the colorful designs and the silky smooth fabric, but these are my favorite comfy pants because I know my purchase is making a difference in the lives of women."

BARS OF HOPE more than soap

Our newest line of soap does more than uplift your senses and cleanse your body. Bars of Hope from Health 2 Humanity (H2H) is a movement for entrepreneurial development and sustainable hygiene. Founder John Celafu was 17 when he first visited Kenya for a community service project. On that visit, he realized many of the community’s health issues – especially among children – could be avoided by building good hygiene habits. In response, Celafu hand-crafted the first batches of H2H soap in his dorm room. With the help of Kenyan-based partners, the business quickly outgrew the dorm. Bars manufactured and sold in the United States fuel the job training that occurs in Africa. Entrepreneurs in Kenya are trained and equipped to make soap and to bring hygiene to their communities. In every job training location that Health 2 Humanity sponsors, illness rates and disease have declined by 25 percent.

Mrs. Bave Presents

THE PIG WAR

World Premiere!

at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center The almost true story of a play that nearly happened about a war that never occurred

Bellingham TheatreWorks continues its commitment to celebrating stories of significance to the Pacific Northwest by premiering Steve Lyons' comedy Mrs. Bave Presents the Pig War. Based in part upon historian Mike Vouri’s The inspirational book The Pig War, the center of this play is, yes, tale of diplomacy the Pig War of 1859, which was a border dispute triumphing over between the United States and Britain over the San Juan Islands that was ignited by the shooting war, as told by the of a British boar by an American farmer. This war mannequins who is significant because ultimately there was no war! were there. Peace was chosen over war. This is one of the few examples in our country’s history of diplomacy triumphing over war. Subtitled “The almost true story of a play that nearly happened about a war that never occurred,” this comedy is inspired by the wacky, true tale of Emilia Bave and her play about the Pig War, titled “The San Juan Saga.” Originally presented in 1959, Mrs. Bave’s play featured mannequin actors because no one on San Juan Island wanted to be in her play! Using her mannequin cast, she presented her play to unsuspecting visitors for nearly 20 years. In the new Mrs. Bave Presents the Pig War, her cantankerous Pig War mannequins spring to life, and take over the telling of the amazing and inspiring Pig War tale.

Business FICTION Hit Refresh :

Capital Gaines : Smart Things

The Quest to Rediscover Microsoft's Soul and Imagine a Better Future for Everyone

by Chip Gaines

I Learned Doing Stupid Stuff

available in October, hardcover, Thomas Nelson

by Satya Nadella, with Greg Shaw & Jill Tracie Nichols, foreword by Bill Gates available in September, hardcover, Harper Business

The inside story from Microsoft’s CEO, Hit Refresh is about the arrival of the most exciting and disruptive wave of technology humankind has experienced: artificial intelligence, mixed reality and quantum computing. At its core, it’s about us humans and how our one unique quality—empathy—will become ever more valuable in a world where technological advancement will disrupt the status quo as never before.

Long before the world took notice, Chip Gaines was a serial entrepreneur who was always ready for the next challenge. Whether it was buying a neighborhood laundromat or talking a bank into a loan for some equipment to start a lawnmowing service, Gaines always knew that the most important thing was to take that first step. In Capital Gaines, we walk alongside him as he relives some of his craziest antics and the lessons learned along the way.

Thriving in the Middle : How the Best Managers Create Mutual Success by Mike Cook

available in October, hardcover, Elevate

How does your company train its operational-level managers? Do they go offsite, learn new information from a management expert, receive a training manual, or something similar? Most businesses fall into this development category, treating managers as our academic system treats students. The results, unfortunately, consist of short-lived bursts of enthusiasm and little measurable improvement, in part due to the lack of day-to-day applicability and personal accountability. Thriving in the Middle looks to replace this ineffective version of management development with a more culturally founded, experience-dependent model. Based on decades of leadership experience and breakthrough studies, Mike Cook establishes the case for "Distributed Development Communities," in which application takes place in a near-real-time, experiential environment using actual situations faced. Learn the attributes and processes of better management improvement. Your bottom line and your front line will thank you for it. A former human resource professional for Standard Oil of California, Cook now works primarily with senior leaders and teams to develop and implement communities of collaborative performance. With his 30+ years of consulting and coaching experience, operating in a wide range of industries, Cook enjoys working with diverse client teams at all levels to build alignment and enable change that is sustainable and strategic. History Quackery : A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything

The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve

by Lydia Kang and Nate Pedersen

by Stephen Greenblatt

available in October, hardcover, Workman

Looking back with fascination, horror, and not a little dash of dark, knowing humor, Quackery recounts the lively, at times unbelievable, history of medical misfires and malpractices. Ranging from the merely weird to the outright dangerous, here are dozens of outlandish, morbidly hilarious “treatments”—conceived by doctors and scientists, by spiritualists and snake oil salesmen (yes, they literally tried to sell snake oil)—that were predicated on a range of cluelessness, trial and error, and straight-up scams. With vintage illustrations, photographs, and advertisements throughout, Quackery seamlessly combines macabre humor with science and storytelling to reveal an important and disturbing side of the ever-evolving field of medicine.

available in September, hardcover, W.W. Norton

Comprising only a few ancient verses, the story of Adam and Eve has served as a mirror in which we seem to glimpse the whole, long history of our fears and desires, as both a hymn to human responsibility and a dark fable about human wretchedness. Tracking the tale into the deep past, Greenblatt uncovers the tremendous theological, artistic, and cultural investment over centuries that made these fictional figures so profoundly resonant in the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim worlds and, finally, so very "real" to millions of people even in the present.

Hero of the Empire : The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill by Candice Millard

When Women Didn’t Count :

The Chronic Mismeasure and Marginalization of American Women in Federal Statistics by Robert Lopresti

available now, hardcover, Praeger

Federal statistics have been hiding and distorting women's history since the first Census in 1790. Robert Lopresti's book traces the development of data on population, employment, crime, health, and many other topics, showing how often the statistics which have shaped our view of American women have been based on false assumptions, or simply wrong. Readers will learn why a report on farm wages ended by angrily denying that farm life drives women insane, why department store owners preferred ex-prostitutes as managers, and why the number of women-owned businesses appeared to suddenly drop by 20 percent in 1997.

While President Trump poses particular dangers because of his personality and disposition, Trumpism—a mixture of authoritarianism, nationalism, racial backlash, and a tendency to delegitimize opposition—is an ideology with deeper roots and greater reach. The authors provide a roadmap for understanding how Trumpism came to pass in 21st-century America, identifies the sources of systematic decay in our politics, and the actions necessary to prevent worldwide democratic erosion.

Economics for the Common Good by Jean Tirole

available in October, hardcover, Princeton University Press

When Jean Tirole won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Economics, he suddenly found himself being stopped in the street by complete strangers and asked to comment on issues of the day, no matter how distant from his own areas of research. Over the following seven years, more than 1,500 quakes were recorded. The DOE plans to dump spent nuclear rods in the same way. Evidence of fracking’s seismological impact continues to mount. . . . Humans as well as fault lines built our “quakeland.” This journey around the United States in search of the truth about the threat of earthquakes leads to spinetingling discoveries, unnerving experts, and ultimately the kind of preparations that will actually help guide us through disasters. It’s a road trip full of surprises.

American Wolf : A True Story of Survival and Obsession in the West

available in September, hardcover, Basic Books

available in October, hardcover, Crown

Berns and his team began with a radical step: they taught dogs to go into an MRI scanner-completely awake. They discovered what makes dogs individuals with varying capacities for self-control, different value systems, and a complex understanding of human speech. What It's Like to Be a Dog will fundamentally reshape how we think about, and treat, animals.

Before men ruled the Earth, there were wolves. Once abundant in North America, these majestic creatures were hunted to near extinction by the 1920s. But in recent decades, conservationists have brought wolves back to the Rockies, igniting a battle over the very soul of the West. With novelistic detail, Nate Blakeslee tells the gripping story of one of these wolves, a charismatic alpha female named O-Six.

The Art of Flora Forager

by Andy Goldsworthy

by Bridget Beth Collins

available in September, hardcover, Abrams

available in September, hardcover, Sasquatch Books

Projects presents more than 40 of the artist's recent large-scale sculptural work from around the world. Using local materials—including stone, clay, and wood—Goldsworthy's projects are inspired by and interact with the natural landscape. Goldsworthy's ideas about the work are subject to the brute facts and forces of nature: sunlight, sedimentation, tides, erosion, extremes of heat and cold, and plant growth and decay. Situated mostly throughout Europe and the United States, Goldsworthy's projects are as beautiful as they are thought-provoking. Each one is accompanied with notes by the artist, and many have not been published previously.

Flower fans and nature enthusiasts will fall in love with this charming art book from Instagram sensation Flora Forager featuring the best of her unique floral compositions created with botanical materials. Flora Forager creates images out of flower petals, leaves, stones, twigs, and other natural materials that she finds in her garden and in urban wild areas in her neighborhood.

Ansel Adams : The National

Wise Trees

Parks Service Photographs

by Diane Cook and Len Jenshel

by Ansel Adams

available in October, hardcover, Abrams

available in October, hardcover, Abbeville Press

Photographers Cook and Jenshel spent two years traveling to 59 sites across five continents to photograph some of the world's most historic and inspirational trees. Trees, they tell us, can live without us, but we cannot live without them. Not only do trees provide us with the oxygen we breathe, food gathered from their branches, and wood for both fuel and shelter, they have been essential to the spiritual and cultural life of civilizations around the world. This project both reflects and inspires awareness of the enduring role of trees in nurturing and sheltering humanity.

In 1941, Ansel Adams photographed America's national parks for a series of murals that would celebrate the country's natural heritage. Because of the escalation of World War II, the project was suspended after less than a year, but not before Adams had produced these images, which illustrate both his early innovations and the shape of his later, legendary career as America's foremost landscape photographer. In these glorious, seminal images we see the inspired reverence for the wilderness that has made Ansel Adams' work an enduring influence on environmentalism as well as art.

Nevermoor : #1 The Trials of Morrigan Crow

by Jessica Townsend

available in October, hardcover, Little Brown

It has been too long since I have felt this way about a book. At first I lamented that I didn't get to read this through the eyes of my childhood self, but then I realized that this book completely channeled my inner 11-year-old. Morrigan Crow's story is delightfully inventive and the characters are so refreshing that I am certain Jessica Townsend is destined for greatness. It's inevitable that comparisons will be made to a certain boy wizard but Morrigan Crow stands on her own. I don't know how I'm going to wait for the next book! —Claire

OCTOBER 3rd

Pre-order your copy today!

At last, Cressida Cowell is giving us a new series! And this one is just as rollicking as her How to Train Your Dragon series. Here we meet Xar, a young wizard waiting for his magic to come in, and Wish, a maiden warrior. These two should be mortal enemies but keeping with tradition of most middle grade stories, they become unlikely friends and adventure ensues. Witches are extinct (or are they?) but Xar doesn't believe it and is determined to catch one and steal its magic. Meanwhile, something very dark, very evil, and VERY hungry is hunting them. Oh, and did I mention that Cressida Cowell is coming here? Mark your calendars for October 5th so that you can meet her in person! –Claire The author of the How To Train Your Dragon series is back with a new series that is fun and fantastical. Neither Xar, a wizard without magic, or Wish, a warrior princess, are what their respective parents hoped for. But when events bring them together they find their skills of wit, cleverness, and bravery are needed to combat an ancient evil. Great start to a new series filled with fun characters and Cowell's goofy illustrations. –Trevor

Mighty Jack and the Goblin King by Ben Hatke

I love Ben Hatke's graphic novels. His drawings are goofy, fun, and have a great ability to convey emotion. As much fun as his Zita the Spacegirl trilogy is, I think I like Mighty Jack even more! In this second installment Jack and Lilly must journey into the plant world to rescue Jack's autistic sister Maddy from ogres with the aid of their magical-plant-fueled powers. A great addition to anyone's graphic novel collection. –Trevor

Nyxia

by Gregory Scott Katsoulis

by Scott Reintgen

available in August, hardcover, Harlequin Teen

available in September, hardcover, Crown Books

All Rights Reserved is a chilling dystopian set in a future America where every word and gesture is copyrighted, patented, or trademarked and everyone older than 15 must pay to speak ($47.93). Saying sorry costs $10 and is a legal admission of guilt ($71.03). After witnessing a friend kill himself on her 15th birthday instead of working off his family’s mountains of debt, Speth makes the decision never to speak again and sparks a rebellion ($294.43). I’m not the biggest fan of dystopian, but I loved this book because it was such a clever social commentary ($35.17). –Gretal M. age 18

Nyxia: The most valuable substance ever and just happens to be the substance that can be molded like clay into anything by the human mind, and Babel (formally known as Google), has given 10 kids a fortune if they would compete for the ability to go planet-side on Eden and mine more Nyxia. Reminiscent of Ender's Game, this book was a great read, full of deceit, mystery, love, and betrayal. –Brayden W. age 17

Her sister Laurel on the other hand doesn't want anything to do with her grave and spends her time hunting and admiring the woods desperately wanting to go to the place her sister hates—school. This book is a beautifully woven cloth where the fabric is the book and the threads are the stories. –Stephanie K. age 17

Adam Silvera’s latest novel is sure to make you cry. They Both Die at the End is set in an alternate reality where each person gets a call on the day they are going to die, letting them know. Two boys start out their End Day as strangers, but for different reasons they both search for a Last Friend to share their last day with. Wednesday, September 27, 7pm ERIN MCKITTRICK –Mudflats & Fish Camps:

NCI Nature of Writing Series

800 Miles Around Cook Inlet

Alaska holds a mythological place in the American imagination as our wildest, coldest, largest, and farthest frontier. It is also the home of writer Erin McKittrick, who lives in a yurt on the shore of Cook Inlet with her husband and two preschool-age children. Mudflats and Fish Camps chronicles McKittrick’s journey as they set out to hike and paddle the entire coastline of Cook Inlet, a distance of 800 miles. This is unconventional parenting in the extreme, bringing kids not just into the woods, but into quicksand, snow, and the realm of grizzles! Their story provides an intimate history of a wild and fascinating place and the people who call it home.

CHRIS KELLY –America Invaded: A State by State

Guide to Fighting On American Soil

Have you ever wondered why some towns in Texas have French names? Or why there’s a statue of a Shawnee chief at the US Naval Academy? America Invaded has the answers to these intriguing questions, and so many more. Ever since they first set foot on the North American continent, humans have explored, discovered, established boundaries—and subsequently invaded—all across the territory we now call the United States. Join us as we welcome, once again, one of our favorite historians to the Readings Gallery.

Sunday, October 1, 4pm ROBERT MICHAEL PYLE Where Bigfoot Walks:

NCI Nature of Writing Series

Crossing the Dark Divide

At long last, this gem has been reissued! Updated with fresh experiences and finds, Where Bigfoot Walks is a spectacular, moving, and witty narrative exploration of not only the phenomenon of Bigfoot, but also the human need to believe that something is out there beyond the campfire, and that wildness remains as well. Awarded a Guggenheim to investigate the legends of Sasquatch, Robert Pyle trekked into the unprotected wilderness following accounts of unknown, upright hominoid apes among us. Robert Michael Pyle is the author of 18 books, including Wintergreen, Chasing Monarchs, The Thunder Tree, Sky Time in Gray’s River, and the recent poetry collection Evolution of the Genus Iris. A Yale-trained ecologist and a Guggenheim fellow, he is a full-time writer living in southwestern Washington.

Wednesday, October 4, 7pm Dual Reading! KATE CARROLL DE GUTES –The Authenticity Experiment: Lessons from the Best & Worst Year of My Life & BRENDA MILLER –An Earlier Life Join us in the Readings Gallery for this dual event by two of our favorite memoirists. De Gutes didn't yet understand how insidious social media had become—all of it curated to show a wonderful life, regardless of what was really occurring. But when her editor, her best friend, and her mother all died within 10 months of each other, de Gutes could no longer keep up the charade. She began The Authenticity Experiment as a 30-day challenge, wondering if she could be more honest about her days. The essays resonated with a wide audience, so de Gutes kept writing, chronicling the dark and the light, and putting it out there for everyone to see. AN EARLIER LIFE: Whether traveling from synagogue to sweat lodge, from the Arizona desert to a communal hot springs in California, in her latest book Brenda Miller navigates the expectations placed on young girls and women at every turn. She finds guidance in her four major creeds (Judaism, Home Improvement, the Grateful Dead, and Rescue Dogs), while charting a course toward an authentic life.

Thursday, October 5, 6:30pm THE CHUCKANUT RADIO HOUR at WCC's Heiner Theater featuring NATHALIA HOLT –Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars

In the 1940s and '50s, when the newly minted Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed quick-thinking mathematicians to calculate velocities and plot trajectories, they didn't turn to male graduates. Rather, they recruited an elite group of young women who, with only pencil, paper, and mathematical prowess, transformed rocket design, helped bring about the first American satellites, and made the exploration of the solar system possible. Based on extensive research and interviews with all the living members of the team, Rise of the Rocket Girls offers a unique perspective on the role of women in science. This special Radio Hour will also salute Whatcom Community College's 50th Anniversary. Nathalia Holt, Ph.D. is a science writer and the New York Times bestselling author of Cured: The People who Defeated HIV. Tickets $5: available at Village Books and brownpapertickets.com. Friday, October 6, 7pm NCI Nature of Writing MARIA MUDD RUTH –A Sideways Look at Clouds Series When she moved to the soggy Northwest, Ruth assumed that locals would know everything there was to know about clouds, in the same way they know about salmon, tides, and the Seahawks. Yet she never heard anyone talk about clouds. People knew a little bit about clouds, most were like her: they had a hard time identifying clouds or remembering their names; as adults, life had largely sidetracked their sky-gazing time. A captivating storyteller, Ruth blends science, wonder, and humor to take the scenic route through the clouds and encourages readers to chart their own rambling, idiosyncratic course. Maria Mudd Ruth is the author of more than a dozen books on natural history topics, including Rare Bird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet and now lives in Olympia, Washington.

Eliot Prize; and Between Storms. Her chapbooks include Letters from Prague and The Violin Teacher.

Wednesday, October 18, 7pm MIKE COOK –Thriving in the Middle: How the Best Managers Create Mutual Success

How does your company train its operational-level managers? Do they go offsite, learn new information from a management expert, receive a training manual, or something similar? Most businesses treat managers as our academic system treats students. The results consist of short-lived bursts of enthusiasm and little measurable improvement, in part due to the lack of day-to-day applicability and personal accountability. Thriving in the Middle looks to replace this ineffective version of management development with a more culturally founded, experience-dependent model. Learn the attributes and processes of better management improvement. Your bottom line and your front line will thank you for it. A former Human Resource professional for Standard Oil of California, Mike now works primarily with senior leaders and teams to develop and implement communities of collaborative performance.

Upstream interweaves nature, commerce, cuisine, adventure, and the environmental impact on how we consume this once seemingly limitless food source. Sunday, October 29, 4pm Dual Poetry Reading! RICHARD WIDERKEHR –In the Presence of Absence and BARBARA BLOOM –Pulling Down the Heavens Richard Widerkehr’s In the Presence of Absence brings together elegies, journeys, and love poems. Gayle Kaune said the book is filled with gratitude earned by paying attention to the small moments that make up a reverent life: the black trees reflected in a roadside puddle, a mother’s slow passing and the tenderness with which the poet stands witness to her death: I must be true/to your story./ I can’t tell it/one spoonful at a time. This book details a heart that is wide open to both the pain and beauty of life. Widerkehr sings Kaddish for his father, admires bikini-clad women on a resort beach in Mexico, and observes his own cancer surgery, all the while knowing we are just passing through. BARBARA BLOOM: On Pulling Down the Heavens, Joe Stroud said, “Barbara Bloom’s poems are a clear window into the world of wonder, of a childhood lived in the wilds of British Columbia, of a commitment to family and friendship, and an abiding reverence for the natural world.” The poems are autobiographical, touching on topics from childhood to the present.
