The first Pac-Man arcade cabinets were released in October 1980. Originally, the character was called "Puckman." When the game came to the U.S. from Japan, however, they changed the name over concerns the arcade cabinet could be easily vandalized to say something much more, ahem, rude.

Celebrating 40 Years Building Community One Book at a Time
Dear Reader, Village Books is 40 years old! What you hold in your hands is a bit of a time capsule–a blast from the past if you will. We are celebrating 40 years in business this summer and we wanted to place a special spotlight on where we’ve been. We are so grateful to mark such a milestone and we owe our gratitude to you, dear reader, for your devotion to our mission of building community. What started as a mom-and-pop dream has now developed into a company that employs almost 50 people in Whatcom County and is poised to be here for years to come. We appreciate every time we see you selecting a birthday gift, starting your holiday shopping, or picking up a little something for yourself. We are here because you know that an independent bookstore is the heart of the community, and we’re proud to be that heart. With gratitude for 40 years and here’s to at least 40 more!

COntinuing the Legacy Village Books Owners Reflect on the Past,
Look to the Future
T
hrough the hard work and dedication of owners and employees, Village Books is celebrating 40 years in business. Forty years! Amazing! This occasion lets us reflect on what it means to be the owners of a business that we know has been important to so many people in the community. There's a certain level of pride in being owners of a company that has helped bring authors and illustrators to students in our schools; that has partnered with and donated to hundreds of philanthropic organizations that help our community and beyond; and that has employed hundreds of people over the years. We appreciate that we are still here because our customers know the value of having a vibrant, local economy that carries a diverse array of products. Though the store has had to face various changes to the bookselling landscape over the years (predatory practices by non-brick-and-mortar retailers, the rise and plateau of e-books and e-readers, severe economic fluctuations), we have remained, and continue to remain, devoted to reaching our customers in whatever ways they need us. We are also appreciative of all the authors, illustrators, editors, and translators who have come to Village Books to share their work. The memories that are created when folks are able to get a peek behind the scenes into the creative process are priceless. Some of our favorites have been kids events where the front of the Readings Gallery is filled with children sitting on the floor, absolutely rapt. Whether it's a debut author reading in the store or a sellout crowd at the Mt. Baker Theatre, our events have created many happy moments. We also owe so much gratitude to Chuck and Dee Robinson, the founders of Village Books and Paper Dreams. We know that their decades of leadership and guidance, both in the business and in the community, help to make the store what it is today. We know that we are building a literary community in everything we do and to make it to 40 years is no small feat. We thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts. –Sarah, Paul, and Kelly

The FAQS (Facts)
of FORTY YEARS Former VB Owner/Co-Founder Chuck Robinson shares the answers to four decades of frequently asked questions. Looking Back... Q: What prompted you and Dee to open a bookstore? A: The smart-aleck response is “a moment of insanity.” But seriously, a love of books, wanting to work together, and a desire to help build community.
Q: Why did you choose Bellingham? A: There were several factors: the proximity to Seattle and Vancouver, while being a separate community; the size of the city; the presence of colleges; and that it was a community of readers – it boasted high library usage and already had a good independent bookstore.
Q: Did you envision the stores becoming what they are today? A: Not for a moment. Dee and I imagined running a single “Mom & Pop” store with a couple of employees.
Q: What was the biggest surprise of those early days? A: Running a business was far more complicated than it looked, and it wasn’t a 9 to 5 job.
Q: What were the biggest changes and challenges? A: That could take pages to answer, but here are some landmark changes in the last 40 years: the roll-out of the big box bookstores and their pressure on publishers for special deals; the internet; eBooks; digital audio; the 2008 recession; and the accelerating speed of change.
Q: How did the author events program begin? A: Three weeks after opening the store we hosted James Stewart Thayer. Most events were just signings. Then came poetry readings, then a transition to readings and talks. Last year the store hosted more than 350 events. FH: 360.671.2626 • villagebooks.com

40 Years of Frequenty Asked Questions
ANSWERED!
continued
Q: Who were the most memorable author guests? A: Ivan Doig was one of our earliest, most frequent, and most beloved guests. Johnny Cash was incredibly gracious and shy. Garrison Keillor entertained more than 1000 folks at a 2008 Chuckanut Radio Hour. Chris Van Allsburg, Roger Tory Peterson, and Dale Chihuly had lines around the block for their signings. Hosting Barbara Kingsolver a couple of times was very exciting. The list could go on and on.
Q: Do you worry that the stores will change? A: A big reason that Village Books still exists after 40 years is that it constantly changed. We love change and encourage it.
Q: Do you regret selling the stores and do you miss them? A: We found the perfect combination of people to continue the legacy of Village Books, and the timing was right. We miss the folks we worked with and all the friends we made among our customers, but we love our new life. Village Books and Paper Dreams Co-Founders Chuck and Dee Robinson retired in 2017. In between travels, they now run a consulting company and are actively engaged in supporting a number of community organizations and causes. A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn
paperback, Harper Perennial Modern Classics
Since it first made waves in 1980, this radical history of the United States by lifelong activist Howard Zinn is just as pressing and relevant today. A critical examination of the nation via the perspective of immigrant, working class, indigenous, and other oppressed peoples, this edition has been updated up through the 2005. If you once had to write an essay on how the U.S. won the Vietnam War for a class in high school like I did, this book may be a wake-up call for you. –Questen

"The first time that I came to Village Books, I was in elementary school and starting to fall in love with books. How fitting and thrilling, then, that VB provided the first space where I would ever present myself to the public as an author. My release party for "Aliens on Vacation" was one of the best moments of my life as a Bellinghamster. I stepped up to the podium and saw my beloved 8th grade teacher in the audience and nearly dissolved into tears. What an honor to release my book at the same place where I have found so many wonderful stories and authors over the years." –Clete Barrett Smith, Aliens on Vacation and If We Were Giants 10

"My love of Village Books is deep and longstanding. I so admired Chuck and Dee Robinson, the founders of the store: under their leadership, Village Books became a central part of literary Bellingham and the larger community. And I’m delighted that the new generation of owners - Kelly Evert, Paul Hanson, and Sarah Hutton - are carrying on the great work, broadening and deepening the store’s well earned reputation for being one of the best bookstores in the country. When she instead marries esteemed doctor Juvenal, the resolute Florentino will wait a lifetime for her. In the era before weather satellites, a mega hurricane approaches Galveston, Texas. What else can I say about this timeless and beloved story that hasn't already been said a thousand times? Only that I end up re-reading HP once every year or so when I'm in need of comfort. But my favorite way to enjoy the whole series is listening to it on audio, read by the fabulous Jim Dale. This book has lived on as an all-time favorite of mine because of how capable, powerful, and complex Sabriel is as a heroine. It's uncommon in fantasy to see a female character not sexualized, especially 25 years ago! I treasure this story (along with the rest of the series) and it's a favorite of mine to reread every year. If you're looking for feminist fantasy, Sabriel is the real deal. –Lauren

The true story that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick. Not only an insightful history of the New England whaling industry that drove ships to sail around Cape Horn into the Pacific Ocean in search of whales...not only an insight into whales' behavior that would incite such an attack...but an examination of the success and failure of very different leadership styles upon the fates of the two lifeboats that escaped from the Essex. David Mitchell’s kaleidoscopic novel tells the unexpurgated story of Utopia Avenue’s turbulent life and times; of fame’s Faustian pact and stardom’s wobbly ladder; of the families we choose and the ones we don’t; of voices in the head, and the truths and lies they whisper; of music, madness and idealism. Can we really change the world, or does the world change us?
A Burning
by Megha Majumdar available in June, hardcover, Knopf
Taut, symphonic, propulsive, and riveting from its opening lines, A Burning has the force of an epic while being so masterfully compressed it can be read in a single sitting. Majumdar writes with dazzling assurance at a breakneck pace on complex themes that read like a thriller: class, fate, corruption, justice, and what it feels like to face profound obstacles and yet nurture big dreams in a country spinning toward extremism. An extraordinary debut.

That is, until the fateful summer when word spreads of a new pill that offers even confirmed cynics a short-term taste of happiness…just long enough to make it through the holidays without sinking into depression. Sarah J Maas’ latest series, Crescent City, is one of the greatest fantasy series in the last decade. Following Bryce Quinlan, a half-fae, Maas creates a story of love and redemption set among the backdrop of a tumultuous city on the verge of an epic, cataclysmic war. Great for fans of Marvel movies, high fantasy, and searing supernatural romance! –Chase
A group of families is vacationing at a lakeside mansion when a storm of biblical, climate change proportions sweeps through, forcing the kids to abandon their parents and fend for themselves. Why? Because their parents embody all the irresponsible behavior, entitlement and policies that have led to this moment, and the kids know it. Angry and resentful, they realize that they must find solutions on their own. A harsh view of grown-ups and a hopeful view of the tenacity of youth. –Claire

The Vanishing Half
The Engineer’s Wife
available in June, hardcover, Riverhead Books
available now, hardcover, Sourcebooks Landmark
Brit Bennett has bowled me over with her latest novel, easily my favorite of 2020 thus far. Twin sisters growing up in Jim Crow Era Louisiana are so light-skinned that they could pass for white, which is exactly what one does. Stella vanishes to start anew on the west coast leaving her sister, Desiree, bereft. The narrative follows both paths and the anticipation and wondering about whether they will meet again is palpable. So, so good. –Claire

The Apocalypse Factory : Plutonium and the Making of the Atomic Age
by Steve Olson
available in July, hardcover, W.W. Norton
In the desert of eastern Washington State, Hanford was built in months. Far from prying eyes, scientists Glenn Seaborg, Enrico Fermi, and many thousands of others manufactured plutonium. With his characteristic blend of scientific clarity and storytelling, Steve Olson asks why Hanford has been largely overlooked in histories of the Manhattan Project and the Cold War. He recounts how a small Washington town played host to some of the most influential scientists and engineers in American history as they sought to create the substance at the core of the most destructive weapons ever created. Let's Never Talk About This Again: A Memoir by Sara Faith Alterman
available in July, hardcover, Grand Central Publishing
Twelve-year-old Sara enjoyed a G-rated existence in suburban New England, filled with nerdy word games invented by her prudish father, Ira. But Sara's world changed for the icky when she discovered that Ira had been shielding her from the truth: that he was a campy sex writer who'd sold millions of books in multiple languages, including the wildly popular Games You Can Play with Your Pussy. Which was, to the naïve Sara's horror, not a book about cats. For decades the books remained an unspoken family secret, until Ira developed early onset Alzheimer's disease . . . and announced he'd be reviving his writing career. With Sara's help.

"I'd like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Village Books on their 40th anniversary! Village Books is one of my favourite bookstores in the whole wide world! It is a pleasure to visit as a customer. I never leave without an armload of goodies. Add to the goodness the wonderful warm welcome I've experienced every single time I've visited as an author over the years. What a treasure this bookstore is. Such a blessing, not just for the community of Bellingham, but for the literary community as well. Thank you, Village Books, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" –Meg Tilly, Golden Globe award-winning actress and author of Cliff's Edge, Solcace Island, and other novels
"Village Books stole my heart when I first walked in their door 17 years ago. They’re an author’s dream, and a reader’s best friend; that is how they’ve achieved forty wonderful years!" –Jennie Shortridge, whose novels
40 Year Tributes "Village Books is my favorite kind of bookstore—big enough to get lost in, small enough to find yourself, big enough to stock titles you’ve never even heard of, small enough that there’s a kind and clever bookseller to point you personally to ones you’ll love, big enough to host great events, small enough that the crowd will always be full of familiar faces. Thank you for forty wonderful years, Village Books! Looking so forward to what comes next!" –Laurie Frankel, This Is How It Always Is, The Atlas of Love, Goodbye for Now
include Love Water Memory and When She Flew
"How do you celebrate 40 years of awesomeness? Let me count the ways. As a long-time customer from the first days when the cat wandered between the bookshelves to Village Books’ present-day form, I have always found the book I wanted and the book I needed. As a writer, I found a literary home at VB, inspired by authors such as Louise Penny, J.A. Jance and Charles Frazier who came to read and tell the story of their writing journeys. Village Books helped me to grow as an author. I read with Jim Milstead at the first ever open mic, where I learned the value of writing “outloud,” sharing my words with the public. When VB put together the first writer’s event, held upstairs in the old Golden Rule, I heard Ivan Doig for the first time and had breakfast the next morning with Sharon McCrumb in the old Woolworth luncheon. Wrapping books for the Christmas tree and doing Hogwarts activities to bring out the latest Harry Potter book at midnight are things I’ll always remember. We are so blest to have such a gathering place full of prose and poetry and a cup of tea. Huzzah for another 40 years." –Janet Oakley, long time customer and author of Tree Soldier, Timber Rose, Hilo Bay Mysteries, and more.

The first book in Tamora Pierce’s expansive and excellent Tortall books, Alanna: The First Adventure contributed greatly to my love of fantasy and has me always coming back to it. Anniversary Edition 2011 Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children #1 by Ransom Riggs
paperback, Quirk Books
Miss Peregrine’s has this fantastical yet sinister energy about it that draws you in. Riggs’ spectacular world-building, aided by eerie black-and-white photographs dispersed throughout the book, effectively portray the dark, rich world of the peculiar. Jacob, the protagonist, is neither arrogant nor perfect. The characters are anything but stereotypical and have depths that make you truly wonder about their backstories. In short: a must-read. –Isabel F. age 15
2017 Turtles All The Way Down by John Green
paperback, Penguin Books
This book had one of the most accurate portrayals of mental illness that I have seen in YA literature. The main character, Aza, is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, but she is often trapped in the spiral of her own thoughts. Aza’s anxiety and OCD felt real, and I felt connected to her. –Sarah K. age 18

By Claire McElroy-Chesson, Village Books Events Coordinator Thinking about my time here at Village Books and the hats that I have worn, one that has been the most gratifying for me is leader of the Young Adult Review Committee (Y.A.R.C.). It began in September of 2014 and I thought, what better way to honor the “looking back” theme than to interview my three original members? Emma, Gretal, and Stephanie have been with me since the beginning. When we started the group they were 18, 15, and 14, respectively. Gretal and Stephanie are both students at Western Washington University and Emma works in I.T. All three are voracious readers and have collectively written hundreds of book reviews that we use in a variety of ways here at Village Books. (See page 36) We met via Zoom and reminisced about the last nearly 6 years together. Were we not in the midst of a pandemic, Gretal would be studying abroad in Prague. Stephanie, in addition to attending her classes at WWU, is the co-president of the Harry Potter Club, and Emma would be going TO work instead of working from home. What’s not different? They’re reading A LOT. Here is a list of some highlights of the past 6 years: 1. Our annual holiday book exchange which gets fairly raucous. 2. The Young Adult Cliché Bingo Board on which we were able to put one prominent title in almost every, single space. 3. The Banned Books week meeting circa 2018. 4. Hosting guest authors Nick James, Jennifer Longo, and Martha Brockenbrough. I asked them what their favorite books were that they reviewed for the Y.A.R.C., followed by a book that has special significance for them and here is what they said:
Emma: A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi and Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley Gretal: Last True Poets of the Sea by Julia Drake and Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia Stephanie: The Light in Hidden Places by Sharon Cameron and The Chosen by Chaim Potok
When asked about the impact that the Y.A.R.C. has had on them, they agreed that forming friendships has been key. I couldn’t agree more. Whether it’s discussing books, the latest binge-worthy series on TV, or ripping apart terrible covers in the Y.A. genre (about which, they are ruthless), we have a lot of fun and I am grateful for this particular hat that I get to wear. VB & COVID-19 By Sarah Hutton, Village Books & Paper Dreams Co-Owner Owning a business is, and always will be, an adventure. But owning a business in these times has allowed us to become our most creative and innovative selves. We have had to rethink our business strategies day by day, figuring out ways to serve our customers and community in a safe manner. Though it has been difficult to see the "closed" and "see you soon" signs in windows, the things that have carried us through this time are the creativity and tenacity of our staff—who, every day, help with new and creative solutions—and the patience and generosity of our customers, who are rolling with these changes. For a business that has always thrived on building community, rethinking what that might look like is no easy task. Pivoting to an almost exclusive online model with shipping and curbside pickup helped us to still reach out to those who needed us while keeping our employees and customers safe. (The Mark Twain bench served as a great landmark for curbside pickup!) You may have even received a home-delivery from one our owners! We're scheduling more virtual events like Open Mic Night and a great many authors. We've received so many messages thanking us for our customized care packages, for our greeting card service, and for workbooks sent to bored kids and parents. These new services are helping to keep us connected during this time and many of these innovations will carry forward long after this has all passed. Our community has grown stronger as we navigate these new waters. We are truly grateful to our customers who have continued ordering from us and those finding us online for the first time. We are also grateful to our staff working hard to fulfill those orders. We're excited to see you back in the store and we thank you for all of your support.

Summer Reading
Challenge Hey Kids!
Join us in celebrating summer with one of our favorite activities—READING! We've changed it up a little this year by adding optional challenges for pre-readers AND adults in addition to our traditional reading challenge. Download the Summer Reading Challenge form that works best for you at villagebooks.com or stop by either our Fairhaven or Lynden location to pick one up then read your way to rewards. Read all 15 books on the challenge and return your completed form by Monday, August 31st and receive a $5 gift certificate to Village Books and Paper Dreams AND a treat from our good friends at the Colophon Café. Select your favorite read of the summer and, on the card we provide you, tell us what you liked about it. We'll hang your review up in the store! BONUS! We will hold a drawing in early September from the completed forms and if we draw your name, Village Books will donate a $100 gift certificate to YOUR SCHOOL LIBRARY! If a homeschooler wins, we will donate to the charity of your choice.

CELEBRATE
BELLINGHOME
The last time I was writing an article for The Chuckanut Reader I had no idea we would be in a
totally different kind of world by summer. But here we are. And if there is anything I have learned from the past three months, it's that we live in a fabulous part of that world. Being close to home is what this summer is all about and we have just a few items that make it all the sweeter. We live in a place that is abundant in nature. We have two books that are must-haves for Bellinghamsters! Urban Trails of Bellingham by Craig Romano discusses trails that are quick to get to and perfect for families. Hiking Whatcom County by Ken Wilcox has 110 hikes of miles in northwest Washington State complete with information on parks and water access.
While on these hikes, a sun hat will be needful. We carry Sunday Afternoons Hats: great-looking hats that keep you covered. From the Sport Hat with more neck coverage or my favorite, the Sun Tripper Hat with a small pocket just big enough for latte money, to the adorable Kids Trucker Hat with limited edition art work by northwest artists. And don't forget socks! Modsock is a local business that has been producing whimsical, colorful socks since 2013. From mushrooms and mercats to Sasquatch these are perfect for any outdoor (or indoor) adventure. After that long hike and wanting to relax on your patio to chat with friends, a Magnolia Casual Swing is the ideal spot. These swings are so incredibly comfortable as they cradle you in. You can feel good on the inside too as the outdoor fabric is designed in Central America by artisansapplying traditional processes. These jobs give economic support and sustainability to rural areas. A win-win for all!! Looking forward to seeing you all again and to enjoy this summer together.

VIRTUAL EVENTS JUNE Friday, June 19, 7pm JENNIFER GOLD in conversation with her father, Terry Persun
Virtual Event
–Keep Me Afloat
From the author of The Ingredients of Us comes a moving story about true love and heartbreak, mistakes and redemption, forgiveness and second chances. Poignant and heartfelt, Keep Me Afloat asks the question: How can you expect forgiveness from others if you can't even forgive yourself? Jennifer Gold believes love is sweet and life is messy, which is probably why she has a passion for writing about the relationships of career-focused women. Gold holds a master’s degree in writing and lives in Washington State. Terry Persun has published short stories and novels since the 1970s. He has received seven literary awards over the years. Persun writes in a variety of genres including science fiction, thriller, mystery, and mainstream fiction, as well as poetry. He is a respected keynoter and speaker at libraries, writers’ groups, writers’ conferences, and universities across the country and just so happens to be Jennifer's dad!

A Woman's Quest for Forgiveness and Unconditional Love
A personal, accessible, and literary exploration of the psychology of architecture.
In Search of Pink Flamingos is the true story of a young Nebraska farm girl who defies her parents' demands to become a farmer's wife. At age 19, with a suitcase full of farm-smarts and a license to be a practical nurse, Susan joins the Peace Corps in Africa then serves as a nurse in upcountry Liberia. An interracial romance further aggravates her parents who disown her. When Susan finds the pink flamingos, she discovers what she had been searching for all along. Her journey is one of passion, strength and finding forgiveness and unconditional love. These early adventures fueled a life-ong commitment to service and a thirst for travel and adventure. Join us!
