Summer 2019
Building Community One Book at a Time
Dear Reader,
It must be summer in the northwest. Front doors are opened wide, lawn mowers are humming, the sweet smell of raspberries fills the air, and the telltale signs of deer garden destruction are all around. We love the summer! And we the staff love to see you come into the stores during your family walks or with your muddy legs after a ride around Galbraith or a hike among our many mountain trails. And with the change of the season we too have changes quietly happening within our store family. As we write, our children’s buyer Hana is eagerly awaiting her first baby. We have a new manager in the Fairhaven store. And we have high school and college student staff that are graduating and moving towards their next chapter. But as some things change, some stay the same as we get our Summer Reading Challenge under way and we hunt for Waldo in the annual Find Waldo Local hide and seek game. During this 39th summer of Village Books and Paper Dreams, we could not be more grateful for the beautiful home we have here in Whatcom County. But also for you, dear reader, as you are also part of our bookstore family — our front door will always be open to you and yours so come on in and we will share with you that perfect beach read.

It’s a thrilling, moody and mysterious tale that we expect you will find a rich and rewarding read. New York Times bestselling author Eowyn Ivey is scheduled to visit Whatcom County in March 2020. Inspired by Fire
The Big Burn Sparks Creativity by Kelly Evert, VB Co-Owner
The Big Burn by Timothy Egan was the Whatcom Reads book for 2018-19. If you were able to attend one of the discussions with the author you will know how important this book is especially to the Northwest. In 1910, the largest fire in American history raged in the Northern Rockies. In 23 hours, a firestorm burned more than three million acres and killed at least 78 firefighters. Local artist Anita Boyle was inspired by the story and created a "quilt" for the Allied Arts showing that coincided with the author visit. This artwork is made of papers handmade with 100% cotton rug yarn, (remnants cut from rugs made at True North Textiles, a local loom-woven rug business). Boyle printed historical photos onto the paper, and added some of her favorite quotes from the book. There are some buttons sewn in to represent items lost in the fire. Jeni Cottrell, a local fan of both Village Books and Allied Arts purchased the piece and lovingly donated the art to the store. It hangs upstairs in the fiction section for everyone to enjoy (we put it up higher on the wall as the paper is delicate and we want to keep it safe). We truly are honored to have such a beautiful piece of art so lovingly created by Anita Boyle and donated by Jeni Cottrell. 10

Busman’s Holiday by Paul Hanson and Kelly Evert, Co-Owners, Village Books and Paper Dreams
When bookstore owners go on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to Ireland, what do they do? Why they visit every bookstore they can find, of course!
L
ast fall, when our friend invited us to visit her in Ireland the following March, Kelly and I immediately booked a flight to the country that’s been at the top of our list of places to travel since we first met. The attractions were many: from the bucolic scenery peppered with more castles than you can shake a shillelagh at, to the traditional music that hearkens one back to simpler times. But the rich tradition of storytelling that underpins every aspect of the Emerald Isle called to us the strongest. So as we researched and planned, bookshops served as our stepping stones throughout our journey. We landed in Dublin the day after St. Patrick’s Day—yes, just in time for the hangover—and our first stop after we unpacked our bags was The Winding Stair, one of the oldest bookstores in Dublin and overlooking the River Liffey that runs through the heart of the city. It’s a small shop that is extremely well curated. Coincidentally, they used to be three floors with a restaurant on the third floor, just like Village Books. There we struck up a conversation with the lovely bookseller Michelle and compared recent favorites that we happened to have in common: Little by Edward Carey and Circe by Madeline Miller. After each sharing our wonder at meeting kindred readers from across the pond, we asked her favorite book. “Oh my. That’s a most difficult question. But today, I’d have to say my favorite book is The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly.” Great! One we haven’t read yet! We added that to the stack of books we purchased.
Paul, Michelle, and Kelly at the Winding Stair in Dublin
There were many more in Dublin that we visited—like Hodges Figgis near Trinity College, Stokes Books in the Arcade, and Ulysses Rare Books (bring a handkerchief for the all drooling you’ll do) and yet we still missed a number of gems including Books Upstairs, the shop that everyone who’s visited Dublin asks us about. (continued on page 13)

(An Irish Holiday – continued from page 11)
Visits and conversations continued as we toured the southern half of Ireland. There’s Bantry Books, newly purchased by two sisters with boundless energy who are helping to continue the tradition of the West Cork Literary Festival. (Recommending Toast: The Story of a Boy’s Hunger.) Far to the west is the Dingle Bookshop where owner Michael is from Britain and, at the moment, “a bit ashamed of it” (thanking you very much, Brexit). He’s put together a core section of his recommendations he calls “Vital Titles” and his recent favorites are Pachinko, Orphan Master’s Son, and Sisters Brothers.
St. Patrick, beautiful blue bookshops, and reading recommendations from our new friends.
Then our last and finest stop was at Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop in the heart of the college town of Galway, home of Cúirt International Festival of Literature. It was just voted Bookshop of the Year, deservedly so, and they are celebrating 30 years. This is a bookstore to get yourself good and lost in and we enjoyed a long visit with Charlie himself, the charming Vinnie, and the waggish Noreen (whose answer to “How are you?” was, “Very well, thank God.”) Kelly and I left Ireland with a great many new friends, pages of recommended reading, phones full of photos, a stack of books that we needed an extra bag to carry back, and enough memories to fill the pages of the Chuckanut Reader. But space won’t allow any more so we’ll just have to stop here. Wait! Kelly just reminded me … we didn’t even mention the Book of Kells, the Trinity College Library, or the Chester Beatty Library. And the pubs! Good golly, the PUBS! Well now, that’s an article unto itself, isn’t it? You’ll just have to ask us about it next time you see us. Unless we go back to Ireland for good, that is. Then you’ll just have to come visit. –Paul and Kelly Charlie Byrne's Bookshop in Galway, Ireland's bookstore of the year!

ROUND IT UP for
O
ur Round It Up program has been going strong for over two years and we’re elated to share our newest partner, Lydia Place! You might know them from their innovative fundraisers around the county such as Handbags for Housing and Bowling for Beds, or you might know them from the hard work that they have done to fight homelessness in Whatcom County since 1989. Now, we’re glad to help support their profound mission “to disrupt the cycle of homelessness and promote sustained independence for current and future generations,” with your help of course.
A nonprofit, community-based agency serving homeless families since 1989, Lydia Place is an active participant in our community’s effort to end homelessness in Whatcom County.
From a single safe-housing location 30 years ago, Lydia Place has developed into a full-service organization. Over the years they’ve recognized housing is merely the first step, and families who are experiencing homelessness have greater needs and high barriers they must face on their paths to stability and independence. As a response, Lydia Place has developed wide-ranging programs designed to go beyond emergency and permanent supportive housing, and dive deeper into their mission of breaking the generational cycle of poverty, by including supportive wrap around services. In addition to intensive housing case management, Lydia Place has a Parent Support Program that offers in-home early childhood development and parent education, and a Mental Health Program with high quality, low barrier, in-home clinical mental health services to support clients to living a life where they feel mentally and emotionally healthy. With all of these offerings available for clients, their needs are great. In 2018 alone, Lydia Place spent $45,000 on emergency sheltering for vulnerable families with children due to housing shortages and affordability, and they have already exceeded this amount for 2019. We are happy to partner with Lydia Place in two ways. First, we can round your purchase at both our Fairhaven and Lynden locations to the nearest dollar. That small change can make a big difference! BONUS: If you pre-purchase your copy of The Testaments by Margaret Atwood before the release date of September 10th, Village Books will donate a portion of the sales to Lydia Place in honor of the work they have done to improve the lives of families in our community. This sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale has been years in the making and is one of the most anticipated books of the year. Pre-order yours today!
To learn more about their programs and find volunteering opportunities, please visit LYDIAPLACE.ORG. Meanwhile, we’ll see you in the store to Round It Up!
Thanks for rounding up your purchases this season in support of Lydia Place. 14

Light from Other Stars
The Electric Hotel
available now, hardcover, Bloomsbury
available in June, hardcover, Sarah Crichton Books
Eleven-year-old Nedda Papas is obsessed with becoming an astronaut. In 1986 in Easter, a small Florida Space Coast town, her dreams seem almost within reach—if she can just grow up fast enough. Theo, the scientist father she idolizes, is consumed by his own obsessions. Laid off from his job at NASA and still reeling from the loss of Nedda’s newborn brother several years before, Theo turns to the dangerous dream of extending his living daughter's childhood just a little longer. The result is an invention that alters the fabric of time. Light from Other Stars is about fathers and daughters, women and the forces that hold them back, and the cost of meaningful work. It questions how our lives have changed, what progress looks like, and what it really means to sacrifice for the greater good.
For nearly half a century, Claude Ballard has been living at the Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel. A French pioneer of silent films who started out as a concession agent for the Lumière brothers, the inventors of cinema, Claude now spends his days foraging mushrooms in the hills of Los Angeles and taking photographs of runaways and the striplings along Sunset Boulevard. But when a film-history student comes to interview Claude about The Electric Hotel—the lost masterpiece that bankrupted him and ended the career of his muse, Sabine Montrose—the past comes surging back. In his run-down hotel suite, the ravages of the past are waiting to be excavated: celluloid fragments and reels in desperate need of restoration, and Claude’s memories of the woman who inspired and beguiled him.

The Lightest Object in the Universe by Kimi Eisele
available in July, hardcover, Algonquin
What if the end times allowed people to see and build the world anew? This is the landscape that Eisele creates in her surprising and original debut novel. Evoking the spirit of such monumental love stories as Cold Mountain and the creative vision of novels like Station Eleven, this novel tells the story of what happens after the global economy collapses and the electrical grid goes down. It’s a story about resilience and adaptation, a testament to the power of community, where our best traits, born of necessity, begin to emerge.

Emmeline lives an enchanted childhood on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses. What he won’t explain are the mysterious scents stored in the drawers that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them. –Paul

by Kristen Arnett
available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
available now, hardcover, Tin House Books
An unnamed Sri Lankan inmate has barricaded himself inside a prison computer lab in Dutchess County, N.Y. A riot rages outside, incited by a poem published in the house literary journal. This, our narrator’s final Editor’s Letter, is his confession. As he awaits imminent and violent interruption, he takes us on a roller coaster ride of plot and language, determined to share his life story. How did he end up here? Should he have remained a quiet Park Avenue doorman? Or continued his rise in the black markets of postwar Sri Lanka?
One morning, Jessa-Lynn Morton walks into the family taxidermy shop to find that her father has committed suicide, right there on one of the metal tables. Shocked and grieving, Jessa steps up to manage the failing business, while the rest of the family crumbles. Her mother starts to make aggressively lewd art with the taxidermied animals. Her brother Milo withdraws. And Brynn, Milo’s wife—and the only person Jessa’s ever been in love with—walks out without a word. Suddenly, her mother’s art escalates and the Mortons reach a tipping point.

In painting this portrait of a family’s becoming, Lombardo joins the ranks of writers such as Celeste Ng, Elizabeth Strout, and Jonathan Franzen as visionary chroniclers of our modern lives.

A grand baronial house on Loch Ness, a quirky small-town bookseller, and a single mom looking for a fresh start all come together in this witty and warmhearted novel by New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgan. Single mother Lottie answers an ad for a nanny job in the Scottish Highlands — the job description asks for someone capable of caring for two…well, the advertisement says “gifted children”; the reality is more like “feral wolverines.” Are books, fresh air, and kindness enough to heal this broken family — and her own?
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson
available now, paperback, Sourcebooks Landmark
Appalachia during the Great Depression was tough. But what gave many struggling families entertainment was the librarian and her pack horse, bringing a library book. In this novel, Cussy is a proud librarian. However, a condition from an enzyme deficiency has left her blue. If Cussy is going to bring the beloved books to people, she is going to have to endure prejudice and trouble. I was inspired by this story of a tough woman as she brought books to her community despite her struggles. –Kelly E.

You will have given shape and voice to the stories and adventures you always wanted to share, the stories your readers want to hear.
WhaMemWriMo Workshop Series
These classes take place in the Village Books Readings Gallery from 5-6:30pm on Thursdays, September 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Get Inspired!
September 5 “Did he really say that?” Creating Effective Dialogue in the Memoir with Laura Kalpakian
September 12 Three Acts & Scene Generation with Nancy Canyon
Memoirs begin with memory. Writing a memoir means shaping memories—places, people, relationships, family stories, events both big and small—into a coherent narrative. This class will offer ideas, strategies, and suggestions to help you meet that challenge. We’ll discuss how (and where) to begin putting the past on the page, how to develop, and sustain your work, how to use journals, letters, and photographs to enhance your story. Bring your ideas, your thoughts, your hopes and questions. Leave with a handout to guide you, and a sense of direction.
Aristotle’s Incline—a three act plotting device, along with the literary scene— the building block of any book, provide writers with two easy tools for penning and organizing a memoir. We’ll examine pacing, flashback, action, dialogue, and learn how conflict is essential to writing a dramatic story. In this intro class, we’ll generate a scene list that will help you flush out your narrative. You’ll leave class with a beginning time-line, Aristotle’s Incline, and several scene ideas to write at your leisure.
September 19 Turning People You Know into Characters on the Page with Rebecca Mabanglo-Mayor Wr i t i n g a b o u t family and friends can be a daunting task when writing memoir. Using techniques drawn from traditional storytelling and modern improvisational theater, join Rebecca Mabanglo-Mayor in exploring how gesture, vocal quality, and silence can turn the people in our lives into vibrant characters on the keyboard.

Building Community One Book at a Time
Three Women POLITICS &
CURRENT EVENTS
The Macho Paradox : Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help by Jackson Katz
available in June, hardcover, Sourcebooks
Revised to include current studies, politics, and discussions, The Macho Paradox is the first book to show how violence against women is a male issue as well as a female one–and how we can come together to stop it. It incorporates the voices and experiences of women and men who have confronted the problem from all angles, the discussions surrounding currents events in politics and pop-culture, and where the violence is ignored or encouraged in our upbringing.
Dopesick : Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy
by Lisa Taddeo
available in July, hardcover, Avid Reader Press
Over the past eight years, Taddeo embedded herself with three American women in different parts of the country to write a deeply immersive account of their sexual lives and longings. American women are embarking on a new age of owning their desire, and this is the book that will be a must-read for that movement. The women in this book are real, three-dimensional people, with strengths, flaws, opinions, and needs and the book itself is raw, unfiltered, and unapologetic.
Gender and Sexual Diversity Pride : Fifty Years of Parades and Protests from the Photo Archives of the New York Times by The New York Times
available now, hardcover, Abrams Image
Here, collected for the first time, is a powerful visual history of five decades of parades and protests of the LGBTQ rights movement. These photos, paired with descriptions of major events from each decade as well as selected reporting from the Times, showcase the victories, setbacks, and ongoing struggles for the LGBTQ community.
available in August, paperback, Back Bay Books
In this masterful work, Beth Macy takes us into the epicenter of America's twentyplus year struggle with opioid addiction. From distressed small communities in Central Appalachia to wealthy suburbs; from disparate cities to once-idyllic farm towns; it's a heartbreaking trajectory that illustrates how this national crisis has persisted for so long and become so firmly entrenched. But in a country unable to provide basic healthcare for all, Macy still finds reason to hope.
The Mueller Report
by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller with additional reporting from the Washington Post available now, paperback, Scribner

History History The Death of Democracy : Hitler's Rise to Power and the Downfall of the Weimar Republic
The Ghost Ships of Archangel : The Arctic Voyage
by Benjamin Carter Hett
available in June, paperback, St. Martin’s Griffin
That Defied the Nazis
by William Geroux
available now, hardcover, Viking
In 1942, four Allied ships traversing the Arctic are separated from their convoy and head north into the ice field of the North Pole, seeking safety from U-boats in the perilous white maze of ice floes and giant bergs. Despite the risks, they have a better chance of survival than the rest of Convoy PQ-17, a fleet of 35 cargo ships carrying $1 billion worth of war supplies to the Soviet port of Archangel.
A riveting account of how the Nazi Party came to power and how the failures of the Weimar Republic and the shortsightedness of German politicians allowed it to happen. Why did democracy fall apart so quickly and completely in Germany in the 1930s? How did a democratic government allow Adolf Hitler to seize power? In The Death of Democracy, Benjamin Carter Hett answers these questions, and the story he tells has disturbing resonances for our own time.

Down the Up Staircase : Three Generations of a Harlem Family by Bruce Haynes and Syma Solovitch
of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison’s Ten-Year Road Trip
available in June, paperback, Columbia University Press
by Jeff Guinn
available in July, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
The fascinating story of two American giants whose annual summer sojourns introduced the road trip to our culture and made the automobile an essential part of modern life, even as their own relationship changed. Although the Vagabonds traveled with an entourage of chefs, butlers, and others, this elite fraternity also had a serious purpose: to examine the conditions of America’s roadways and improve the practicality of automobile travel.
The authors trace the social history of Harlem through the lens of one family across three generations, connecting their journey to the historical and social forces that transformed Harlem. This story is told against the backdrop of a crumbling threestory brownstone in Sugar Hill and captures the tides of change that pushed blacks forward through the 20th century — the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, the early civil rights victories, the Black Power and Black Arts movements — as well as the many forces that ravaged black communities.

History Theodore Roosevelt for the Defense : The Courtroom Battle to Save His Legacy by Dan Abrams
available now, hardcover, Hanover Square Press
Teddy Roosevelt, the boisterous and mostly beloved national hero, had accused his former friend and political ally, now turned rival, the Republican Party leader William Barnes of corruption. The furious Barnes responded by suing Roosevelt for an enormous sum that would have financially devastated him. But the trial wasn’t about money, it was a fight for reputation. For Roosevelt this was to be his last hurrah. He still harbored political dreams, and there were strong indications he intended to make one more run for the White House. Barnes had his own political ambitions, planning to run for the United States Senate. Those hopes would be dashed if he could not defeat a man so widely respected as “Colonel Roosevelt.” Following the case through court transcripts, news reports, and other primary sources, New York Times bestselling authors Dan Abrams and David Fisher present a high-definition picture of the former president, still fighting for his own political career and, just as importantly, the patriotic ideals he held dear.

Tracing the liquid’s diverse history from antiquity to the present, he details its curious and crucial role in cultural evolution, religion, nutrition, politics, and economics.
One Giant Leap : The Impossible Mission That Flew Us to the Moon
by Charles Fishman
available in June, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
On the day of Kennedy’s historic 1961 speech, America had a total of 15 minutes of spaceflight experience — with just five of those minutes outside the atmosphere. Russian dogs had more time in space than U.S. astronauts. Each hour of space flight would require 1,000,000 hours of work on Earth to get America to the Moon and back on July 20, 1969. From the research labs of MIT, to the factories where dozens of women sewed spacesuits, parachutes, and even computer hardware by hand, Fishman captures the exceptional feats of these ordinary Americans.

In the 1890s, the nation’s promise of equality had failed spectacularly. Amidst this backdrop arrived Major Taylor, a young black man who wanted to compete in the nation’s most popular and mostly white man’s sport, cycling. Twelve years before boxer Jack Johnson and 50 years before Jackie Robinson, Taylor faced racism at nearly every turn — especially by whites who feared he would disprove their stereotypes of blacks. In The World’s Fastest Man investigative journalist Michael Kranish reveals new information about Major Taylor based on a rare interview with his daughter and other never-before-uncovered details.

by Brenda Wineapple
from the Bubonic Plague

by David Randall
available now, hardcover, W.W. Norton
Wong Chut King’s passing on March 6, 1900, would have been unremarkable if a city health officer hadn’t noticed a swollen black lymph node on his groin. Empowered by racist pseudoscience, officials rushed to quarantine Chinatown. If the devastating disease was not contained, San Francisco would become the American epicenter of an outbreak that had already claimed 10,000,000 lives worldwide. As local press, railroad barons, and elected officials mounted a cover-up, it fell to federal health officer Rupert Blue to save a city that refused to be rescued.

The Last Wilderness: A History of the Olympic Peninsula by Murray Morgan
available now, paperback, University of Washington Press
Morgan’s history of the Olympic Peninsula, published in 1955, evokes a remote American wilderness “as large as the state of Massachusetts, more rugged than the Rockies, its lowlands blanketed by a cool jungle of fir and pine and cedar, its peaks bearing hundreds of miles of living ice that gave rise to swift rivers alive with giant salmon.” Redesigned with a new introduction by Tim McNulty, this saga will engage a new generation of readers.
The Pig War : The Most Perfect War in History

Christianity cast a shadow over so-called pagan thought, books were burned, and the library of Alexandria, the greatest repository of classical knowledge, was destroyed. available now, paperback, Michael Impero
by E. C. Coleman
available now, paperback, The History Press
The 1859-1872 "Pig War" broke out when an American living on a quietly disputed island in the Gulf of Georgia shot a British pig. The nearby Vancouver Island authorities and the military leadership of the Washington Territory both wanted to escalate the trivial incident into a fullblown war between the US and Great Britain. The hot-heads decided that the problem should become one of the earliest examples of international arbitration.

Northwest History

Devastated by war, many white Southerners hoped to restore a pre-Civil War society — just without slavery — and Andrew Johnson seemed to share their goals. He ignored Congress, pardoned rebel leaders, and promoted white supremacy. Congress had to stop the American president who acted like a king. Brenda Wineapple dramatically portrays this period when the country, on the heels of a brutal war, was rocked by the first-ever impeachment of a sitting American president.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps — a two-part program whose goals were to refurbish the timberlands and farmlands of the country and to put unemployed young people to work. One result was the establishment of Camp Glacier in Whatcom County. In a short period of time, there were 200 enrollees stationed there and they helped to shape areas of Mount Baker that we all know and love. Perfect for all Whatcom County history buffs! –Lauren

Run by a group of female abolitionists, it survived earthquakes, bubonic plague, and violence directed against its occupants and supporters. Art • Artists The Last Leonardo : The Secret Lives of the World’s Most Expensive Painting by Ben Lewis
available in June, hardcover, Ballantine Books
Controversy surrounds this artwork: did the auction house actually have the right painting, or is there another? Did Leonardo even paint a Salvator Mundi? Was the painting restored to such an extent that it became a Leonardo, though it was in fact the work of his apprentices? In short: Is it the genuine artifact, the result of a frenzied marketing genius — or perhaps a little of both?
Calypso
by David Sedaris available now, paperback, Back Bay Books
Interesting Lives No Walls and the Recurring Dream : A Memoir by Ani DiFranco
available now, hardcover, Viking
Ani’s coming of age story is defined by her ethos of fierce independence – unwaveringly building a career through appearances at clubs and festivals, releasing her first album at the age of 18, and consciously rejecting the mainstream recording industry and creating her own label, Righteous Babe Records. In these pages, as in life, she never hesitates to question established rules and expectations, maintaining a level of integrity that has inspired and challenged.
HUMOR
With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny — it's a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris's powers of observation have never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. Calypso is simultaneously Sedaris's darkest and warmest book yet — and it just might be his very best.

Does time exist? What is infinity? Why do mirrors reverse left and right but not up and down? In this scintillating collection, Holt explores the human mind, the cosmos, and the thinkers who’ve tried to encompass the latter with the former. With his trademark clarity and humor, Holt probes the mysteries of quantum mechanics, the quest for the foundations of mathematics, and the nature of logic and truth. Along the way, he offers intimate biographical sketches of celebrated and neglected thinkers, from the physicist Emmy Noether to the computing pioneer Alan Turing and the discoverer of fractals, Benoit Mandelbrot. An entertaining guide to the most profound scientific and mathematical problems — and personalities — of recent centuries.
Science Underland : A Deep Time Journey by Robert Macfarlane
available in June, hardcover, W.W. Norton
Macfarlane takes us on a journey into our relationship with darkness, burial, and what lies beneath the surface of both place and mind. Traveling through “deep time” — the dizzying expanses of geologic time that stretch away from the present — he moves from the birth of the universe to a post-human future, from the prehistoric art of Norwegian sea caves to the blue depths of the Greenland ice cap, from Bronze Age funeral chambers to the catacomb labyrinth below Paris, and from underground fungal networks to a deep “hiding place” where nuclear waste will be stored for 100,000 years to come.
Chasing the Moon : A Science Graphic Novel! The Imitation Game : Alan Turing Decoded
by Jim Ottaviani, illustrated by Leland Purvis available in July, paperback, Abrams ComicArts
Alan Turing was the mathematician credited with cracking the German Enigma code during World War II, enabling the Allies to defeat the Nazis. In this original graphic novel, Jim Ottaviani and Leland Purvis show Turing to be an eccentric, persecuted genius and a groundbreaking theoretician whose seminal work still plays a role in the science and telecommunication systems that fuel our modern world.
The People, the Politics, and the Promise That Launched America Into the Space Age
by Robert L. Stone and Alan Andres available in June, hardcover, Ballantine Books
In 1961, President Kennedy proposed the nation spend twenty billion dollars to land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. For the first time, Chasing the Moon reveals the unknown stories of the individuals whose imaginative work across several decades culminated in America’s momentous achievement. More than a story of engineers and astronauts, the moon landing grew out of the dreams of science fiction writers, filmmakers, military geniuses and rule-breaking scientists.
Reader, Come Home : The Reading Brain in a Digital World
by Maryanne Wolf
available in August, hardcover, Harper
From the author of Proust and the Squid comes a lively, ambitious, and deeply informative epistolary book that considers the future of the reading brain and our capacity for critical thinking, empathy, and reflection as we become increasingly dependent on digital technologies. Concerns about attention span, critical reasoning, and over-reliance on technology are never just about children — Wolf herself has found that, though she is a reading expert, her ability to read deeply has been impacted as she has become, inevitably, increasingly dependent on screens. Provocative and intriguing, Reader, Come Home is a roadmap that provides a cautionary but hopeful perspective on the impact of technology on our brains and our most essential intellectual capacities — and what this could mean for our future.

Embracing All Your Feelings to Create a Life You Love
available in July, hardcover, St. Martin’s Press
by Randy Taran
available in June, hardcover, St. Martin’s Press
Many books have broached the subject of self-help over time, but I found myself really impressed with this one. All people typically aim for happy, positive lives. Our emotions are a powerful part of the human experience. Randy Taran explores how negative emotions even have something to offer. For example, fear can help us discover courage and anger can help us understand personal limits and set healthy boundaries. A positive and uplifting guide for all of those feelings! –Kristen
Neurologist and sleep physician Leschziner shares true stories and experiences from some of the people he’s treated in this revealing and curious book about sleep disorders. Subjects discussed include sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and nocturnal epilepsy. What I appreciated the most was how the author helped to define the disorders in relatable ways. He expands upon the methods used to treat patients and the critical role that sleep plays in our overall health. A very fascinating read! –Kristen

Life and Facing Death
by BJ Miller and Shoshana Berger
The World According to Mister Rogers :
available in July, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
Important Things to Remember
by Fred Rogers
available now, hardcover, Hachette Books
An inspiring collection of stories, anecdotes, and insights, this book reminds us that there is much more in life that unites us than divides us. Culled from Fred Rogers' speeches, program transcripts, books, letters, and interviews, along with some of his never-before-published writings, The World According to Mister Rogers is a testament to the legacy of a man who served and continues to serve as a role model to millions.
Miller and Berger present a clear-eyed and big-hearted plan for approaching the end of life, written to help readers feel more in control of an experience that often seems anything but controllable. Their book offers everything from instructions for how to do your paperwork and navigate the healthcare system to answers to questions you might be afraid to ask your doctor. There are also lessons for survivors, like how to shut down a loved one’s social media accounts and write a great eulogy. An honest, surprising, and detailed-oriented guide to the most universal of all experiences.

The World Could Be Otherwise : Imagination and the Bodhisattva Path by Norman Fischer
available now, paperback, Shambhala
Norman Fischer Saturday, June 22, 4pm
In frightening times, we wish the world could be otherwise. With a touch of imagination, it can be. Imagination helps us see what’s hidden, and it shape-shifts reality’s roiling twisting waves. In this inspiring reframe of a classic Buddhist teaching, Zen teacher Norman Fischer writes that the paramitas, or “six perfections”— generosity, ethical conduct, patience, joyful effort, meditation, and understanding — can help us reconfigure the world we live in. “This book gives me hope. In times like these, when we cannot afford to indulge in hopelessness, Norman Fischer offers us a vision of the human imagination as a spiritual practice and a source of courage and love. Now, more than ever, we need his vision of ourselves and of the world.”—Ruth Ozeki

AN INTERACTIVE JOURNAL

I fell in love with Woods' first novel, and her sophomore work does not disappoint! She has a wonderfully vivid way of capturing the classic aspects of the most enduring stories: the joys, the trials, the journeys, and the whimsy of a child who sees magic everywhere. Her story of young Oona from the seaside town of Nordlor hits all the right notes: a high seas adventure, a seafaring cat, sea creatures who can soar through the skies, and how to find your own inner strength. –Hana

On Motherhood Before I Was Ready

by Meaghan O'Connell

What makes a woman ready for motherhood? How many of us actually ARE ready when it happens? Here is an honest look at the months before and after the birth of O'Connell's son, detailing the feelings that she had and those that she thought she should have. Sometimes there's a big difference. This is not the glorified, glowing picture of pregnancy, birth, and post-partum. It's real, honest, and so, so relatable. –Claire

Fortunately, she gets into a prestigious boarding school in Scotland. Unfortunately, she can’t stand her roommate who just so happens to be a Scottish princess. How It Feels To Float by Helena Fox

You could look at the most exquisite piece of art in the most prestigious gallery in the world — or you could read this book. How It Feels To Float is Biz’s story of mental illness, loss, love, and unlikely friendship. Her father passed away years ago, but he still visits Biz to recount memories from her childhood. Except every time Biz tries to respond, he vanishes. But it’s okay; Biz has her mom, the twins, and Grace. Until she kisses Grace, and everything gets awkward. Helena Fox’s astounding debut will sweep you up, break your soul into a trillion tiny pieces, and then put it back together bit by bit. Bottom line: I highly recommend! –Isabel F. age 14

When We Were Lost by Kevin Wignall
available in June, hardcover, Hachette
When We Were Lost is the thrilling tale of a group of teenagers and their adventures in the jungle. While they must work together as a team if they are to survive, there are some figures who believe that they are better suited to leadership roles than others. The author has created a real page-turner, filled with lovable characters, giant caimans, and lethal snakes. I couldn’t put this book down and would highly recommend it to all. –Noah G. age 16
Hungry Hearts : 13 Tales of Food and Love edited by Elsie Chapman and Caroline Tung Richmond
available in June, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
My experience with anthologies is usually a collection of independent stories, so it was refreshing to see one where a common thread weaved them all together into one cohesive story: they all took place in the same neighborhood, where both food, family, and culture intermingle. From magical realism, thriller, to contemporary, anyone can find a story that they relate to. The LGBT+ and POC representation is gracefully integrated and adds to the melting pot of the neighborhood. If you only take one thing away from Hungry Hearts, I hope it's that food and love are closely connected. –Aria S. age 17

Girls of July
Warhead : The
by Alex Flinn
available in June, hardcover, Harper Teen
Girls of July caught me unawares. Spider, Britta, Kate, and Meredith — four very different girls–find peace and adventure in the Adirondack mountains when Spider decides to rent out her family’s cabin for the summer. Alex Flinn’s contrasting characters and interwoven plot lines make this book glow. Far more than a teen friendship story, this novel explores the nuances of family, the impact we have on our neighbors, and the courage it takes to be yourself. Irresistible in every way, Girls of July is not one to miss! –Isabel F. age 14
Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi
available in June, hardcover, Macmillan
This book is the sapphic hate to love story everyone needs in their life. Sana and Rachel have been enemies since Sana asked Rachel out, and Rachel thought it was a cruel joke. But now Sana is the one person Rachel needs for her film project. Tell Me How You Really Feel was everything I hoped it would be and more. It’s a perfect romantic comedy to match its perfect cover. Aminah Mae Safi is phenomenal, and I also highly recommend her debut novel, Not the Girls You’re Looking For. –Gretal M. age 19

True Story of One Teen Who Almost Saved the World
by Jeff Henigson
available in July, hardcover, Delacorte Press
Warhead: The True Story of One Teen Who Almost Saved the World by Jeff Henigson is a story about Jeff's teenage years. He has the typical teenage worries: grades, friends, and girls, and he also has brain cancer. When Jeff is offered a wish, he takes it as an opportunity to make his distant father proud. Jeff wishes to travel to the Soviet Union to meet with Mikhail Gorbachev to discuss ending the Cold War. Jeff's story dealt with serious topics such as death, distant fathers, and war yet he still managed to put an optimistic look through it all. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an uplifting story. –Sarah K. age 16

To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks. With the kingdom of Castallan’s fate in their hands, the two must race to vanquish what they have unleased, even if it means facing the deepest darkness in their pasts.

The only time her mind isn’t on school, her grandmother, or her beloved daughter is when she cooks, and she is GOOD at it. This is not the story of Cinderella, her prince, or the pumpkin that bore the princess to the ball. The tale that follows is chock full of twists and turns, girls who are done being told who and what to be, and glorious selfintrospection of what beauty truly is. –Hana

Saturday, June 15, 7pm SAVANNAH MOORE-STEIN –Did I Raise You Right? A Single Mother's Memoir Join us in the Readings Gallery as Savannah Moore-Stein presents her new, heartbreaking and beautiful memoir. On her book: "This is a memoir of my life while raising my daughter as a single mother. I have written this book in hope of touching someone’s life. I know raising my child alone is not unique, but my daughter experienced some horrific ordeals as a child and young adult. Over the years I’ve tried to avoid our pain. Now I’ve cracked open that pain to investigate my guilt in all this, taking a good look at how I didn’t protect her. I discovered this book to be cathartic therapy for myself; and I hope it will be for my daughter and my readers as I review what I did, or did not do, and why." Savannah Moore Stein is a pen name for this first-time author. She lives happily in the Pacific Northwest with her loving husband, Rand.

featuring KARL MARLANTES –Deep River: A Novel Karl Marlantes made his name with the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller, the powerful and moving Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War. Now with his new novel, Deep River, Marlantes applies the epic narrative sweep of Matterhorn to a family saga about Finnish immigrants to the Pacific Northwest. He draws glancing inspiration from his own family history to tell a story against the backdrop of a logging industry clashing with the radical burgeoning labor movement, World War I, and the upheavals of early 20th century America. Layered with fascinating historical detail and vivid evocations of the pristine beauty of the primeval forest, Deep River is an ambitious and timely exploration of the place of the individual, and of the immigrant, in an America still in the process of defining its own identity. Karl Marlantes grew-up in a small logging town on the Oregon coast and fished commercially with his grandfather as a teenager. In addition to the author interview, each Radio Hour includes live music, fun skits, performance poetry, and lots of laughs. Join us! Tickets $5: available at Village Books and Eventbrite.com. Receive a free ticket with the pre-event purchase of Deep River.
