Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader, This is a momentous occasion for us, our first Dear Reader entry. The support that the community has shown us since we became owners this year has been so affirming and heartwarming that we can only thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We hope that you have enjoyed this transition period as much as we have. It’s been a time of learning and exploration for all three of us, including our first trip as Village Books owners to the annual Book Expo in New York. We met with publishers and authors to find the best books and events to bring to you. Our buyers and staff have been busy previewing and reviewing books for your perusal. And though it’s our names at the bottom of this note, many of the events you’ve enjoyed during summers past are still here including our annual Anniversary Sale, our Chuckanut Writers Conference, and the ever-popular Find Waldo Local hunt. It’s sure to be a summer packed with fun, engagement, and great reading and we know that we have you, Dear Reader, to thank for being able to share it with you. We are grateful for your support and are looking forward to writing many of these for years to come.

We promote outdoor recreation and bring people together to enjoy, preserve and improve the places where we play. Northwest became FAIRHAVEN PARK Recreation Park Stewards for Fairhaven

TRAIL&BOARDWALK

Park in 2014. We chose this space due to the impact we have during the trail run leg of our Bellingham Traverse. We were quickly propelled into taking on a multi-phased project for the health of the forest and the benefit of our community- relocation of wetland trails. For the past two years, we’ve been working in partnership with city staff and our community towards connecting Fairhaven Park with the “100 Acre Woods”. We are proud to be working to relocate unsanctioned trails through fragile wetlands in this special urban forest, allowing increased and enjoyable access for people. We are currently working to raise the funds needed to complete the connector trail and boardwalk.

ROUND IT UP

A New Donation Program at Village Books & Paper Dreams

Village Books and Paper Dreams is proud to introduce Round It Up, our new, amazingly simple giving program created to support local nonprofits! Each season, we'll feature a different nonprofit partner that will benefit when you choose to Round It Up, increasing your purchase to the nearest dollar. The non-profit will receive the Round It Up difference. Your change can really make a change! To participate: As you pay for your purchase, just tell your Village Books or Paper Dreams sales associate that you'd like to Round It Up for local nonprofits. We'll take it from there. June, July, and August's featured nonprofit is Recreation Northwest. Recreation Northwest has been working in our community to clean up trails in Fairhaven Park and through their new Parkscriptions Program will be getting people in our community outdoors. They host fantastic events like the Bellingham Traverse in September (look for the Village Books team again this year!) and the Recreation Northwest EXPO in February. They're stewards for our beautiful Fairhaven Park and are currently working on constructing a new trail and boardwalk within the Fairhaven Park trail network to help make it more accessible for everyone. Please join us in celebrating Recreation Northwest's accomplishments—bringing people together and outdoors—and Round It Up today!

When Jonathan Evison Came to Town by Paul Hanson, Owner, Village Books & Paper Dreams If you were fortunate enough to catch Jonathan Evison, our latest Whatcom Reads author, when he visited Bellingham back in March on behalf of his book The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, you know what a delight he was. Johnny regaled crowds throughout Whatcom County—including Ferndale, WWU, VanZandt, the Cruise Terminal, and Mt. Baker Theatre—with his ribald stories, glimpses into his writing life, and insights into life and the human condition. If you missed Johnny in March or want to see him in another role, you've an opportunity at this year's Chuckanut Writers Conference on June 23-24 (see page 27) where Evison will join 18 other faculty members to educate and inspire attendees.

2018 Whatcom Reads! Looking ahead, the 2017-18 Whatcom Reads! title is Sunil Yapa’s unflinching novel, Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist. Set amid the 1999 World Trade Organization protests, it's a fast-paced, raw, and absorbing story about conflict and compassion, exploring how far we must go for family, for justice, and for love. As a proud partner of the Whatcom Reads! program, Village Books will donate 10% of our sales of Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist to Whatcom Reads! Sunil Yapa is scheduled to visit Whatcom County in March of 2018 at events throughout Whatcom County. Events will be free-of-charge and open to the public—more details in the months ahead. Whatcom READS is a county-wide program that encourages everyone to read and discuss the same book. It is organized by all the public and academic libraries in Whatcom County and Village Books, with significant funding from Friends of the Bellingham Public Library and Whatcom County Library Foundation and support from other local businesses and organizations including the Fairhaven Village Inn.

Do Not Become Alarmed by Maile Meloy

available in June, hardcover, Riverhead

Two families are having a blast on a cruise when, ashore in Central America, the four children go missing. The fastpaced, gripping plot of Do Not Become Alarmed carries with it an insightful, provocative examination of privilege, race, guilt, envy, the dilemmas of modern parenthood, and the challenge of living up to our own expectations.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy

available in June, hardcover, Knopf

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness takes us on an intimate journey across the Indian subcontinent—from the cramped neighborhoods of Old Delhi and the roads of the new city to the mountains and valleys of Kashmir, where war is peace and peace is war. It is an aching love story and a decisive remonstration, a story told in a whisper, in a shout, through unsentimental tears and sometimes with a bitter laugh.

The Readymade Thief by Augustus Rose available in August, hardcover, Viking

After taking the fall for a rich friend, Lee reluctantly accepts refuge in the Crystal Castle–a cooperative of homeless kids squatting in an austere, derelict building. Into the Water by Paula Hawkins

available now, hardcover, Riverhead Books

Do you know how the second book that follows on the heals of a debut bestseller is so often a disappointment? The Girl on the Train was so satisfyingly dark, twisty, and thrilling! Well, she did it. Hawkins' second novel is brilliant and very different from her first. Here we visit a small English town where throughout the years, women die in the Drowning Pool. A woman who has made a special project documenting these deaths ends up dead in the Pool and no one can fathom why. The cast of characters is motley, complex, well-developed and yes, there is a lovely twist at the end. So, so good. –Claire

Watch Me Disappear by Janelle Brown

available in June, hardcover, Spiegel & Grau

A woman vanishes on a solo hike in California’s Desolation Wilderness and leaves behind a family reeling from the loss of this charismatic, enigmatic wife and mother, who, they come to learn, was very good at keeping secrets. A bold departure from the author of the national bestseller All We Ever Wanted Was Everything.

If you’re wondering about that eyecatching title, each story in this collection is named after a geographical location, beginning with two women who take the train to the end of the line at Cockfosters in search of a lost pair of glasses. Sometimes moody, sometimes irreverent, sometimes ironic, Simpson shows an impressive ability to leap into the mind of any character and any style she chooses. The standout is called Erewhon, and is perhaps one of the simplest and most effective deconstructions of gender roles I have ever read. –Stephanie

Land of My Fathers by Vamba Sherif

available now, hardcover, Hoperoad

The Republic of Liberia was founded in the 19th-century with the triumphant return of the freed slaves from America to Africa. Once back to Africa, however, these American-Liberians had to integrate with the resident tribes who did not want or welcome them. Against a background of French and British colonialists busily carving up Africa, while local tribes were still unashamedly trading in slaves, the vulnerable newcomers felt trapped and out of place. Where men should have stood shoulder to shoulder, they turned on each other instead.

The Leavers by Lisa Ko

available now, hardcover, Algonquin

One morning, Deming Guo's mother, Polly, an undocumented Chinese immigrant, goes to her job at a nail salon—and never comes home. No one can find any trace of her. With his mother gone, 11-year-old Deming is left mystified and bereft. Eventually adopted by a pair of well-meaning white professors, Deming is moved from the Bronx to a small town upstate and renamed Daniel Wilkinson. But far from all he's ever known, Daniel struggles to reconcile his adoptive parents' desire that he assimilate with his memories of his mother and the community he left behind.

The Talented Ribkins

available in June, hardcover, Crown

by Ladee Hubbard

"Nina George's engrossing novel is as much about indulging the senses with succulent dishes and dazzling sights as it is about romance and second chances. With a profound sense of place and sensuous prose, the novel functions as a satisfying virtual visit to the French Riviera. A luscious and uplifting tale of personal redemption in the tradition of Eat, Pray, Love." —Kirkus Reviews

available in August, hardcover, Melville House

Goodbye, Vitamin by Rachel Khong

available in July, hardcover, Henry Holt & Company

The sunny cover art and wryly funny writing from Khong in Goodbye, Vitamin initially lures you into thinking it will be nothing more than a standard (though quite good) family drama. But as Ruth gets pulled into the slow, subtle buildup of her father's Alzheimer's, so does Khong almost seamlessly elevate the emotional depth of her characters. Sweet, funny, and absurd moments marry with despair and regret in the way that familial love so often does. –Stephanie

FICTION

A compulsively readable, big-hearted story about a family with special gifts who sometimes stumble in their efforts to succeed in life, The Talented Ribkins draws on such novels as Toni Morrison's Sula and Colson Whitehead's The Intuitionist to weave themes of race, class, and politics into a wonderfully accomplished and engaging novel by a talented new author.

Things That Happened Before the Earthquake by Chiara Barzini

available in August, hardcover, Doubleday

Mere weeks after the 1992 riots that laid waste to Los Angeles, Eugenia, a typical Italian teenager, is rudely yanked from her privileged Roman milieu by her hippie-ish filmmaker parents and transplanted to the suburban world of the San Fernando Valley. With only the Virgin Mary to call on for guidance as her parents struggle to make it big, she must navigate her strange, new, Californian existence.

The pledge is a commitment to buy, in any given month, one fewer book from online sellers and chain stores and one more book from Village Books and Paper Dreams.

A Butch Bliss Novel

available July, paperback, Counterpoint

by Harry Bryant

available in June, paperback, Rota Books

Once upon a time Butch Bliss was a rising star in the adult film industry, but that was before the unfortunate incident with all that cocaine (not his) in the back of the car (also not his). Regardless of the truth, Butch got a decade's worth of free room and board in prison. You'd think a man would be sour on the world after that, but along the way, Butch found an internal serenity. Now he's out of jail and out of work. Stoic, unflappable, and easy-going, Butch is the dude who will do just about anything, if you ask nicely.

Jack McCann is a high-stakes Wall Street trader who sneaks into his office early one morning to clear out his things and run, knowing he's in deep trouble. Outside his office window, Jack hears a booming sound, and then the worst thing imaginable. The date is September 11, 2001. The next day his wife is visited by a grief counselor, and then the mob, to whom he owes $750,000. Totally and utterly broke, in grief and now shock, Diane soon learns her husband was not the loving spouse he appeared to be. A perfect summer read by the son of Elmore Leonard, this is an inventive crime story with a lively cast of rogues.

My Struggle, Book 5 :

by Nathan Hill

Some Rain Must Fall

available now, paperback, Vintage Press

It's 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson hasn’t seen his mother, Faye, in decades— not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she's reappeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news and inflames a politically divided country. She needs Samuel’s help. To save her, Samuel will have to embark on his own journey, uncovering long-buried secrets and relearning everything he thought he knew about his mother, and himself. Entertainment Weekly's #1 Book of the Year. A New York Times AND Washington Post 2016 Notable Book.

by Karl Ove Knausgaard available now, paperback, Farrar, Straus and Giroux

I haven’t been this obsessed with a book series since I was in fourth grade and reading Harry Potter. In this autobiographical six-part series, though classified as fiction, Knausgaard writes with such presence and detail about his life that it’s impossible not to get pulled in deep. Book Five finds Knausgaard at the age of 19 and studying at the writing academy in Bergen, Norway. I’ll anxiously be awaiting Book Six, coming fall 2018. –Joe

Spanning eight hours, this novel follows a squad of AWOL soldiers as they attempt to cross war-torn Baghdad on foot to attend the funeral of their leader. As the men make their way to the funeral, they call to mind the most ancient of warriors, yet also a microcosm of 21st-century America. Kinship of Clover

Here Comes the Sun

by Ellen Meeropol

by Nicole Dennis-Benn

available now, paperback, Red Hen Press

available in June, paperback, Liveright

Set in Jamaica, the plot of Here Comes the Sun revolves almost exclusively around a family of women who all have a different idea of what happiness means. Money, success, love, freedom...these strong and complex characters each want something different from life and each other. It is both epic in theme and intimate in its examination of the struggles each woman faces. There aren’t easy answers or sunny conclusions, just spectacularly honest writing about a culture not often represented in modern fiction. –Stephanie

“This smart, lyrical novel cooks up a cast of quirky characters dealing as best they can with a host of 21st century issues: climate change and biodiversity loss, physical and mental illness, personal tragedy, alternative lifestyles, and the enduring love among friends and family. Ellen Meeropol's deep knowledge of the environment, health care, progressive politics and the human heart shines through on every page. A thought-provoking delight to read; I couldn't put it down!” –Jennifer Browdy, author of What I Forgot And Why I Remembered

Beast

by Kathleen A. Flynn

available now, paperback, Harper

by Paul Kingsnorth available in August, paperback, Graywolf Press

Beast plunges you into the world of Edward Buckmaster, a man alone on an empty moor in the west of England. What he has left behind we don't yet know. What he faces is an existential battle with himself, the elements, and something he begins to see in the margins of his vision: some creature that is tracking him.

Two researchers time travel back to 1816 with a mission to befriend Jane Austen and salvage a lost manuscript. I absolutely loved this book! This debut novel is not to miss. It's well researched and witty—the pages will fly by. I felt like I was in Regency England and became friends with Jane Austen and her family myself. –Leah

The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter by Theodora Goss

available in June, hardcover, Saga Press

Sly, entertaining, and amusing, this is a great summer read. What if some of the best characters in Victorian Gothic stories had daughters (think Dr. Jekyll), and what if, through bizarre circumstances, they found each other? And then, throw in Sherlock Holmes to help them solve some murders (not that they need any man's help!) What you would get is this book which has a fast plot, witty dialogue, and is highly entertaining. –Jonica

Amatka

by Brenda Cooper

available in June, paperback, Pyr

Coryn Williams has grown up in the megacity of Seacouver, where her every need is provided for—except satisfaction with her life. After her parents’ suicides, her sister Lou fled the city. Finally of age, Coryn leaves with her companion robot to look for her sister. But the outside world is not what she expects, and while some people help her, some resent the city and some covet her most precious resource: her companion robot.

The Refrigerator Monologues

by Catherynne M. Valente

by Karin Tidbeck

available in June, hardcover, Saga Press

available in June, paperback, Vintage

A new Valente book is always cause for excitement. In a series of linked short stories, dead girls from a comic book universe recount their lives as tangential characters. In a genre historically dominated by male authors, too often female characters are relegated to supporting roles, only useful for how they serve the hero's story. Valente, in her usual sharp and witty writing, gives voice to these women, challenging how we read male-centric narratives. –Trevor

In Karin Tidbeck's dystopic imagining, language has the power to shape reality. Unless objects, buildings, and the surrounding landscape are repeatedly named, and named properly, everything will fall apart. Trapped in this repressive colony, Vanja dreams of using language to break free, but her individualism may well threaten the very fabric of reality. Amatka is a beguiling and wholly original novel about freedom, love, and artistic creation by an idiosyncratic new voice.

The Weaver's Light by Mara Fields

When the English Fall by David Williams

available in July, hardcover, Algonquin

available in July, paperback, Cite & Folde Books

Fields' novel follows two broken people who have lost their families. Her voice for Callan, the bitter master weaver who spends his days drinking, and Pashi, the lonely orphan and brightest in her class, are each distinct and well versed. The adventure to discover a secret treasure to stop wicked sorcerers with powers straight out of a storybook takes this tale of forgiveness and adds danger and intrigue. Those who like fantasy that's more than armies and battles are sure to enjoy. –David

When a catastrophic solar storm brings about the collapse of modern civilization, an Amish community in Pennsylvania is caught up in the devastating aftermath. Once-bright skies are now dark. Planes have plummeted to the ground. The systems of modern life have crumbled. With their stocked larders and stores of supplies, the Amish are unaffected at first. But as the English (the Amish name for all non-Amish people) become more and more desperate, they begin to invade Amish farms, taking whatever they want and unleashing unthinkable violence on the peaceable community.

Finishes Another Chapter by Sarah Hutton Another chapter is closing here at Village Books—Jonica Todd has left us after working here for 10 years. She has previously held the positions of new book buyer, used book buyer, and consignment buyer. She’ll be spending more time with her family, including an adorable new grandson, and devoting more time to her creative pursuits including art and fashion. We will miss her keen wit and her amazing recommendations for poetry, art, and science fiction that kept everyone turning the pages. We wish her all of the best as she goes forward—Congratulations Jonica! "Jonica is an example of someone who was in this business because of a true, deeply rooted love of books and I found this inspiring every day that I had the privilege to work with her. I'm going to miss our conversations about books, authors, and most recently, grandbabies! And it's because of that cute little baby Fox, that I give her my permission to leave us. Otherwise, I confess I would put up more of a struggle. All best wishes to my friend on her new chapter." –Claire, VB Events Coordinator

Writers at every stage of their career will have the opportunity to participate in lively writers’ workshops, enjoy faculty readings, pick up tips from industry experts, and even pitch their book to literary agents. 2016 Conference Attendee Tara Fort had this to say about their experience: "Perfect amount of speakers, sessions, and attendees. I feel inspired and not overwhelmed. I am looking forward to 2017!" This year we are thrilled to announce that we are again offering master classes! For an additional fee, attendees will have the opportunity to work more closely with conference faculty. In Washington State Poet Laureate Tod Marshall’s class, Exploring the Boarded-Up Houses of Your Triggering Towns, writers will push to get beyond that initiating source of inspiration. This master class is filling up quickly, and it’s only available to conference attendees. Be sure to sign up before it’s too late!

Not only is this cookbook beautifully designed, but it is the most extensive Vegan cookbook I have ever seen. The recipes in this book are from all over the world so you can be sure you are getting a little bit of everything. Plus there is an extensive index in the back of the book organized by recipe and by country. This cookbook really has everything any vegan could want. –Rebecca

GARDENING How to Grow More Vegetables, Ninth Edition : (And Fruits, Nuts, Berries, Grains, and Other Crops) Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land with Less Water Than You Can Imagine

COOKING LITERATURE Dinner with Edward by Isabel Vincent

available in June, paperback, Algonquin

by John Jeavons

available in July, paperback, Ten Speed Press

"There are two kinds of vegetable gardeners—those who garden in beds of some kind and for whom this is the ultimate foundation book, a must-read, and an essential reference. Then there are those who don't garden in beds, for whom it's still a must-read and an essential reference. The book is about how to grow pretty nearly all your food and your garden's fertilizer on a modest amount of land." –Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener: Food Production and Self-Reliance in Uncertain Times

Carefree Outdoor Eating

Le Cadeaux Dinnerware

Thinking she is merely checking in on a friend's nonagenarian dad, Isabel Vincent has no idea that the man in the kitchen cooking a sublime meal will end up changing her life. Dinner with Edward is a book about love, nourishment, and how dinner with a friend can, in the words of M. F. K. Fisher, “sustain us against the hungers of the world.” (Oh, and it includes the technique for the best scrambled eggs … ever. –Paul)

CHUCK'S

BIG RIDE redux Back in the Saddle – A 2000 Mile Fundraiser

I

n the summer of 2015 Chuck set out to ride his bicycle from Bellingham to his hometown of Galva, Illinois — a distance of about 2400 miles. Things went well until the 37th riding day. That evening Chuck posted this on his ride blog: “The big news today came at 17.6 miles, just barely over an hour into the ride, with everything going fine. At a farm, set back a ways from the north side of the road, two dogs began barking loudly, and running toward the road. I kept riding. The next thing I knew they were between me and the right side of the road and one was snarling as if it was about ready to lunge and bite. I kicked out with my right foot to fend off the dog. Everything after that happened very quickly. I went down in the right lane— luckily without a car close.” The result was three broken and two cracked ribs, and many abrasions. Thus ended the fundraising ride that had yielded pledges of nearly $30,000. Fortunately, most folks honored their pledges…as did Chuck. Two years have passed and Chuck’s ready to climb back on the bike —guess you could call him a slow learner. He’ll begin the ride on September 1st where he went down and, after saying hello to those dogs, he’ll pedal on to Bar Harbor, Maine—a distance of about 2000 miles. Once again, Chuck is pledging $1 per mile to each of three organizations: • The mission of the Whatcom Community Foundation is to “amplify the force of philanthropy—by connecting people, ideas and resources—so that communities flourish.”

It helps folks do amazing things in Whatcom County to make this a better place for all of us to live. • Whatcom Community College is celebrating its 50th year—“building futures together since 1967.” WCC has been recognized as one of the leading community colleges in the nation and leads the region in cybersecurity and nursing education. • The Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) has been assisting booksellers in need since 1986, by helping in times of unexpected financial crises. Binc also has given scholarships to bookstore employees and their dependents, and assisted booksellers in attending industry events. Chuck hopes you’ll join him in pledging your support to one or more of these. You may pledge as little as 1¢ per mile for a total of $20—less than lunch in many places. Or, you can join Chuck and pledge $1 per mile…or more. These are all very well run organizations that will put your donations to good use. See the link on villagebooks.com to pledge. Several riders plan to join Chuck for portions of his journey. If you wish to ride a few miles — or many — email galvaboy@me.com. A link is available on the Village Books website so you can pledge, visit the sites of each of organization, and see Chuck’s blog, where he’ll be chronicling his ride. Chuck's ride is sponsored in part by BodyFloat Kinekt Seat Post and Fairhaven Bicycle.

Sunday, August 27, 3pm CANDACE WELLMAN –Peace Weavers:

Uniting the Salish Coast Through Cross-Cultural Marriages

Coast and Interior Salish families arranged cross-cultural marriages throughout the mid-1800s. These strategic alliances played a crucial role in regional settlement and spared Puget Sound’s upper corner from tragic conflicts. Although accounts of the men exist in a variety of records, the contributions of their native wives remain unacknowledged. The four women profiled—Caroline Davis Kavanaugh, Mary Fitzhugh Lear Phillips, Clara Tennant Selhameten, and Nellie Carr Lane—exhibited exceptional endurance, strength, and adaptability. Each wife’s story is unique, but together they and other intermarried women helped found Puget Sound communities and left lasting legacies. They were peace weavers. Candace Wellman is a local history consultant and speaks regularly about women’s history and regional settlement.

You Don't Have to Say You Love Me : A Memoir by Sherman Alexie

available in June, hardcover, Little Brown & Co

How does he do it? How does he manage to send me on a roller-coaster of emotions so effectively with words on a page? Every time. He gets me every single time, and this memoir about his mother Lillian, a deeply conflicted woman, is no exception. The hardships she endured are unfathomable yet she survived. An extremely personal book, this one gutted me and I'm so grateful that Alexie has shared this with us. –Claire

This is the first-person account of how a drug-abusing dropout with a weakness for the International House of Pancakes and a chronic inability to hold down a real job became one of the funniest people on the planet. We Are Never Meeting in Real Life : Essays by Samantha Irby

Whether talking about how her difficult childhood has led to a problem in making “adult” budgets or dispensing advice on how to navigate friendships with former drinking buddies who are now new suburban moms (hang in there for the Costco loot), Samantha Irby is as deft at poking fun at the ghosts of her past self as she is at capturing powerful emotional truths.

Not Quite a Genius by Nate Dern

Nate Dern's razor-sharp eye examines modern society and technology, man buns, dating apps, and juicing crazes. Anyone who's ever scrunched their eyes at WiFi Terms & Conditions, listened to the reasons that led a vegetarian to give up meat, or looked on in horror at the evolving audacity of reality TV, will appreciate Dern's wicked and funny take on modern life.

by Paula Poundstone

available now, hardcover, Algonquin

Offering herself up as a human guinea pig in a series of thoroughly unscientific experiments, Poundstone tries out a different get-happy hypothesis in each chapter of her data-driven search. She gets in shape with taekwondo. She drives fast behind the wheel of a Lamborghini. She communes with nature while camping with her daughter, and commits to getting her house organized (twice!). Swing dancing? Meditation? Volunteering? Does any of it bring her happiness? You may be laughing too hard to care.

Are You Anybody? : A Memoir by Jeffrey Tambor

available now, hardcover, Crown Archetype

At last, Tambor answers the question "Are you anybody?" with a promise that success doesn't mean perfection and failure most definitely is an option.

Tales of

White Sands : Experiences

Traveling the World by London Taxi

From the Outside World by Geoff Dyer

available now, paperback, Vintage

Travel literature never appealed to me until I read Geoff Dyer. Beautiful, present, and at times laugh-out-loud hilarious, it’s hard not to be taken in by Dyer’s spiraling despair and fleeting moments of epiphany as he travels the world. His essay entitled “Northern Dark,” in which he journeys north with his wife to see the northern lights and finds there only darkness, had me tearing up (with laughter) by the end. –Joe

A Woman’s Walks by Lady Colin Campbell

available in June, paperback, Pushkin Press

From young men seeking outdoor adventure to intrepid ladies of a certain age discovering other cultures, Victorian explorers were starting to develop a more personal kind of travelogue. In A Woman’s Walks, Lady Colin Campbell takes us on a voyage of exploration through her inner landscape—as well as through Italy, France, Switzerland, Austro-Hungary, London, and the English countryside.

Shark Drunk : The Art of Catching a Large Shark From a Tiny Rubber Dinghy in a Big Ocean

by Morten Stroksnes

available in June, hardcover, Knopf

A writer and an artist hunt for a shark. What follows is a tale of two men in a boat, drinking, talking, mostly not talking at all, and nothing ever really happening, but I tell you, I couldn’t put it down. Philosophy, history, bromance, tales of the deep, of death and life in the ocean’s grip, this book has it all. I came for the shark, I stayed for the quiet, the beauty of the Norwegian coast. –Joe

Leaving London behind, Paul, Johno, and Leigh began a 43,000-mile trip that would take them off the beaten track to some of the most dangerous and deadly places on earth. By the time they arrived home, they would manage to circumnavigate the globe, and in doing so, break two World Records.

The Long Haul : A Trucker’s Tales of Life on the Road

by Finn Murphy

available in June, hardcover, W.W. Norton

Finn Murphy dropped out of college to become a long-haul trucker. He’s covered more than a million miles packing, loading, and hauling people’s belongings all over America. He whisks readers down the I-95 Powerlane, across the Florida Everglades, in and out of the truck stops of the Midwest, and through the steep grades of the Rocky Mountains. Murphy recounts with wit, candor, and charm the America he has seen change over the decades. Some 40 million Americans move each year, and very few have any idea what they’re getting into or the kind of person to whom they are relinquishing their worldly goods. The Long Haul is also a behind-the-scenes look at the moving industry, revealing what really happens when we call in “the movers.”

The Strange Career of William Ellis : The Texas Slave Who Became a Mexican Millionaire by Karl Jacoby

available in June, paperback, W.W. Norton

To his contemporaries in Gilded Age Manhattan, Guillermo Eliseo was a fantastically wealthy Mexican, the proud owner of a luxury apartment overlooking Central Park, a busy Wall Street office, and scores of mines and haciendas in Mexico. But for all his obvious riches and his elegant appearance, Eliseo was also the possessor of a devastating secret: he was not, in fact, from Mexico at all. Rather, he had begun life as a slave named William Ellis, born on a cotton plantation in southern Texas during the waning years of King Cotton.

The Untold Journey : The Life of Diana Trilling

by Natalie Robins

Moore's careful examination of court documents, letters, and interviews makes this remarkable group of women shine brighter than any chemical ever could. –Hayden

The Assassination Complex :

CONTEMPORARY

CULTURAL CRITICISM

The Fire This Time : A New Generation Speaks about Race

by Jesmyn Ward

Inside the Government's Secret Drone Warfare Program by Jeremy Scahill and the Staff of The Intercept

available now, paperback, Simon & Schuster

Drones are a tool, not a policy. The policy is assassination. But drone strikes often kill people other than the intended target. These deaths dwarf the number of actual combatants who have been assassinated by drones. They have generated anger toward the United States among foreign populations and have even become a recruiting tool for jihadists.

available in June, paperback, Scribner

Jesmyn Ward gathers our most original thinkers and writers to speak on contemporary racism and race. We've made significant progress in the 50-odd years since Baldwin's The Fire Next Time was published, but America is a long and painful distance away from a "post-racial society"—a truth we must confront if we are to continue to work towards change.

Collected here are stories of 200 super women, including Dian Fossey, Martina Navratilova, Sojourner Truth, Indira Ghandi, Aretha Franklin, Margaret Mead, Coretta Scott King, Joan Baez, and many more. Now is the time to acknowledge the greatness of women!

Horsemen of the Apocalypse : The Men Who Are Destroying Life on Earth andWhat It Means to Our Children by Dick Russell

available now, hardcover, Hot Books

Our planet is heating up at an alarming rate, yet progress in climate control is blocked by powerful men who profit from the burning of the planet: energy moguls like the Koch brothers, former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson (now Secretary of State), and politicians like Senator Mitch McConnell who receive massive contributions from energy industries. Most of these men are too intelligent to truly believe that climate change is not a growing crisis, yet put their profits ahead of the health and welfare of the world's population. How do they explain themselves?

Warnings : Finding Cassandras to Stop Catastrophes

by Richard A. Clarke and R.P. Eddy available now, hardcover, Ecco

In Greek mythology Cassandra foresaw calamities, but was cursed by the gods to be ignored. Modern-day Cassandras clearly predicted the disasters of Katrina, Fukushima, the Great Recession, the rise of ISIS, and many others. Like her, they were ignored. "…this book is critical to the need to listen to those few Cassandras who can alert corporations, governments and the global community to catastrophe—this is not a book about miracles, it is a book about how to recognize warnings in a very dangerous world." —Leon Panetta, former Secretary of Defense

available now, hardcover, Princeton University Press

Deep within the American Dream lies the belief that hard work and steady saving will ensure a comfortable retirement and a better life for one's children. But in a nation experiencing unprecedented prosperity, even for many families who seem to be doing everything right, this ideal is still out of reach. Jonathan Morduch and Rachel Schneider draw on the groundbreaking U.S. Financial Diaries, which follow the lives of 235 low-and middle-income families as they navigate through a year. The authors challenge popular assumptions about how Americans earn, spend, borrow, and save and identify the true causes of distress and inequality for many Americans.

Science Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are Seth Stephens-Davidowitz

Inferior : How Science Got Women Wrongand the New Research That's Rewriting the Story

available now, hardcover, Dey Street Books

by Angela Saini

It may have been a shock in 1950 when researchers in Denver surveyed citizens to find that even in anonymous polls participants gave false information. No, they were not all registered to vote and many who claimed to did not have a library card. The statistics were there for the taking, and they did not match the claims. We worry about what other people think, which is why social media is also unreliable. But late at night, in the privacy of our homes, we tell Google the truth. Economist, philosopher and data scientist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz unravels the mystery of big data. He explains what it can tell us about the darker side of human nature, about tracking epidemics and revolutionizing scientific research. But big data is more than Google searches. It is aggregated data from thousands of searchable sources, and has origins in older collection methods. Mostly, you need to ask the right questions. And some of these are about what we should not do with big data. Dr. Stephens-Davidowitz asks the right questions in this absorbing and surprisingly funny, if sometimes depressing, introduction to a science which is changing our lives. –Terri

available now, hardcover, Beacon Press

Caesar's Last Breath :

In Inferior, acclaimed science writer Angela Saini weaves together a fascinating—and sorely necessary—new science of women. As Saini takes readers on a journey to uncover science’s failure to understand women, she finds that we’re still living with the legacy of an establishment that’s just beginning to recover from centuries of entrenched exclusion and prejudice.

The Great Unknown :

Decoding the Secrets of the Air Around Us

Seven Journeys to the Frontiers of Science

by Sam Kean

available in July, hardcover, Little Brown & Co.

by Marcus du Sautoy

Of the sextillions of molecules entering or leaving your lungs at this moment, some might well bear traces of Cleopatra's perfumes, German mustard gas, particles exhaled by dinosaurs or emitted by atomic bombs, even remnants of stardust from the universe's creation. Kean reveals how the alchemy of air reshaped our continents, steered human progress, powered revolutions, and continues to influence everything we do.

Body & Soul If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face? : My Adventures in the Art and Science of Relating and Communicating by Alan Alda

available in June, hardcover, Random House

Alda reflects on moments of miscommunication in his own life, and his determination to improve the way we relate to others. He teaches us ways to build empathy, and even develop a kind of mind-reading ability. This book digs into the heart of what it means to be a true communicator: being able to read another person so well, you know what they’re thinking and feeling and thus be in sync with them.

Memory's Last Breath : Field Notes on My Dementia

Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships : Decoding Social Mysteries Through the Unique Perspectives of Autism (2nd Edition) by Temple Grandin, Veronica Zysk, and Sean Barron available now, paperback, Future Horizons

Born with autism, both Temple Grandin and Sean Barron have created successful social lives. However, their paths were quite different. Temple's logical mind controlled her social behavior, and logic informed her decision to obey social rules and avoid unpleasant consequences. By contrast, Sean's emotions controlled his social behavior, and confused by social rules, isolated and friendless, he made up his own rules and applied them to others. Whether you are a person with autism, a caregiver in the autism community or just someone interested in an outsider view of society, their powerful stories will enthrall and enlighten you.

by Gerda Saunders

available in June, hardcover, Hachette Books

When she was diagnosed with early stage dementia at age 61, Professor Gerda Saunders started a journal chronicling the progression of her disease from her own point of view. Now in the middle stages of the disease, Prof. Saunders recently made a video series for Utah's NPR station that made headlines when she candidly discussed assisted suicide with her family.

From an icon of popular culture, here is inspiring advice for artists, graduates, and all who seek happiness and success on their own terms. When John Waters delivered his gleefully subversive advice to the graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design, the speech went viral, in part because it was so brilliantly on point about making a living as a creative person. Now we can all enjoy his sly wisdom in a manifesto that reminds us, no matter what field we choose, to embrace chaos, be nosy, and outrage our critics. Illustrated with slightly demented line drawings by Eric Hanson, Make Trouble is a one-of-a-kind gift, the perfect playbook for gaming the system by making the system work for you.

The Girl with the Ghost Machine by Lauren DeStefano

available in June, hardcover, Bloomsbury

I was warned this book would make me cry. I was not warned it would reduce me to a blubbering mess by the last page. Emmaline's father invents a machine that can bring back her mother's ghost, and the machine has changed their lives more than they know, for the mechanics of bringing someone back is trickier than you might think. Lauren DeStefano's middlegrade books are instant classics in the running with Kate DiCamillo, and she seamlessly incorporates difficult topics within her beautiful stories—I recommend all of them. –Leah

Gail Carson Levine has been one of my favorite authors since I was a kid. The Two Princesses of Bamarre is still one of my favorite books, kind of like comfort food. The main character deals with prejudice, oppression, and how to stage a revolution, all in a delightful fantasy setting that made me wish I was a kid again. –Hayley

This is the geekiest Cinderella story I've ever read. With a heroine who lives for a Star Trek-esque TV show, an actor trying to break out of his pretty boy typecasting, a greenhaired fairy godmother, a stepsister who is more than she seems, and a pumpkin-themed vegan food truck as the magical carriage, every bit of this story is a heartwarming adventure. –Hayley

Young Adult Afar

Spill Zone

by Leila del Duca, illustrated by Kit Seaton

by Scott Westerfeld, illustrated by Alex Pullivard

available now, paperback, Image Comics

available now, hardcover, First Second

This book is gorgeous. If you like fantasy, and post-apocalyptic societies but are a little bored with the current run of books that all look the same, check this one out. It takes place in Africa, and the characters are all delightful. Besides, who doesn’t like stories about astral projection? –Hayley

A few years ago something happened in the city of Poughkeepsie, now it's a landscape with malignant dangers on every street corner. I'm a long time fan of Westerfeld's work and he's brilliant as usual. In this graphic novel there are monsters, a strong female lead, and plotting toy dolls. With the unsettling but striking illustrations by Alex Pullivard, The Spill Zone will scare the crap out of you—assuming you'll make it out alive, that is. –Leah

Deserted Lands Double: Toils & Snares AND Outward Bound by Rob Slater

Here Rob Slater gives us two books in one—a flip book! Read one and then flip the book over and read the other. Both books have been popular in digital format. Toils & Snares: Untouched by a global pandemic killing over 95% of the population, Samuel’s family fears a mutated virus and the people who have survived it. Is this apocalypse an act of God? Enjoy these reviews of the latest and greatest Young Adult books to hit the streets in recent and upcoming months. Don't miss our in-store Y.A.R.C. display which is always up-to-date and evolving with reviews by teens, for teens! What better way to find out what teens are reading than to go straight to the source?

Royce Rolls

by Margaret Stohl available now, hardcover, Freeform

Do I use rhetorical questions to review books often? Is my need to gush about this book unfounded? Have I seen a YA book that’s this phenomenal before? No, no and no. Because Royce Rolls isn’t the kind of book you see every day. Will you root for teenager Bentley as she struggles to break out of her scripted life? Will you be shocked at the perfectly executed twists and turns the story takes as tension rises? And is there heart, honesty, glitz and glamour? Yes, yes, and yes. Should you pick this novel up right now? Yes, you should. –Nich V. age 16

What to Say Next by Julie Buxbaum

available in July, hardcover, Delacorte Press

What to Say Next is a genuine YA novel centered around David, who has a brilliant mind when it comes to mathematics and small details but is still finding his footing when it comes to social interactions, and Kit, a socialite who's trying to find herself after the loss of her father. These two meet in the middle and become friends. Kit enjoys David's candor and David enjoys Kit’s sense of wonder. These two come together to find the answer to Kit’s question: how did her father really die? Together they start the accident project to find out just that. –Sam T. age 17

A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge

The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr

available now, hardcover, Philomel Books

Flora lost the ability to make new memories at the age of 10. Every few hours when her latest memories slip away, she finds herself in a state of confusion, as to what she’s doing, of course, but also because she realizes over and over that she is no longer 10, but 17. I found Flora’s condition to be absolutely fascinating, but what really made the book special was the emotions that went along with it. Even if she weren’t grappling with this unique problem, Flora’s courage would be inspiring. Prepare yourself for some feelings. –Brynna K. age 17

House of Furies by Madeleine Roux

available now, hardcover, Harper Teen

This story follows young Louisa, a fortune teller on the street, who decides to join a woman (by the name of Mrs. Haylam) who simply offers her a better job and hopefully better life. They arrive at Coldthistle House in the countryside and she is given work and a place to reside in the huge estate. After a short while, and a meeting with the mysterious Mr. Morningside, Louisa notices weird occurrences going on. What she finds out about the house will truly shock you. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery and horror teen novels. –Rosie T. age 17

For Teens, By Teens

available now, hardcover, Amulet Books

A Face Like Glass has the most AMAZING and bizarre concept. Who can imagine a world in which an entire population lives below ground, cannot show any emotion on their face and must learn “faces” in order to do so, and create perfumes that can seduce the mind, wines that can erase memory “live,” and cheeses that can do the same and more? Couple this world with a ruler that literally has split personalities and a thief with a secret plan that is only kept safe by his not even knowing it, and it becomes an amazing read! –Brayden W. age 16

Review Committee Reaper

For Teens, By Teens

Antisocial

by Kyra Leigh available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

Rosie Wolfe just died and woke up surrounded by the grumpy and overworked employees of the Grim Reaper herself, a beautiful woman with a bad attitude. It turns out that in order to get to paradise and meet her dad, she has to collect three souls from the land of the living. She quickly finds out that's easier said than done as she meets a great guy who she doesn't want to leave. A creative, and surprisingly hopeful book about how love can too easily thwart fate, Reaper is not one you want to miss. –Abby C. age 17

by Jillian Blake available now, paperback, Delacorte Press

Antisocial is a book so true, it feels real. Told from Anna, a senior in high school, this story weaves a tale that is so rich in detail. When all of the world is so social, it takes one push, or in this case, one hack, to bring it tumbling down. When all of your so-called private information becomes public, life in high school falls apart. This story correctly tells how much we share on social media and how little that truly matters. I think this is a must-read for those who share their life on social media and those who share nothing. A true masterpiece. –Kamden I. age 13

Our Broken Pieces by Sarah White

available in August, paperback, Harper Teen

When Dimple Met Rishi

Seeing her boyfriend cheat on her with her best friend was something Everly Morgan never thought she’d have to experience. Our Broken Pieces by Sarah White is the story of Everly who just had her heart broken by the two most important people in her life. She feels lost and abandoned until she meets Gabe in her therapist’s office. With Gabe’s help, she’s able to heal and overcome the hurt that has been caused by her two best friends. I really enjoyed this story, because it is a very cute little romance and it is about a young girl finding her way back after she’s been betrayed. –Amanda M. age 16

by Sandhya Menon

Words on Bathroom Walls

York : The Shadow Cipher

available in July, hardcover, Random House

available now, hardcover, Walden Pond Press

Words on Bathroom Walls is a creative story about a boy named Adam who has schizophrenia, a condition that makes him see people and things that aren't there. Just as Adam starts a drug trial to help stop his visions, he meets a girl named Maya. Maya doesn't know Adam's secret and as they become close, she starts to get worried. This story is all about coping with secrets and things you can't control. A beautiful story that ties first love, voices in your head, and selfacceptance together. Very uplifting. –Kamden I. age 13

A city-wide, hundred-year-old puzzle set in a futuristic New York—this, along with the beautiful cover, drew me in right away. I love puzzle books, and I've found that middle reader ones tend to be the best, York: The Shadow Cipher included. Not only does Laura Ruby set up a compelling premise, within it she portrays diversity in her characters without calling attention to it. Normalized diversity plus fascinating plot equals a book every middle reader, young adult, or not-so-young adult should read. –Brynna K. age 17

by Julia Walton

available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

Mix two teens (who will be arranged to be married soon) with science camp and what do you get? The hilarious and heartwarming tale that is When Dimple Met Rishi. I absolutely loved it; the characters are a breath of fresh air in the contemporary genre. Dimple and Rishi are both smart, complex, and fully developed by Menon. The story itself is utterly adorable and kept my attention throughout. A feminist, diverse, own-voices read that quickly became one of my favorites of the year. –Hannah M. age 18

by Laura Ruby

Organized by habitat—forest, beaches, fresh water, and backyards/urban parks—this book will teach kids about some of the most intriguing flora, fauna, and natural phenomena of the region, while also teaching ecological lessons. PERFECT for summer! Local Sunday, June 25, 4pm Author CANDACE WELLMAN –Peace Weavers: Uniting the Salish Coast Through Cross-Cultural Marriages

Candace Wellman, a Bellingham resident, is a local history consultant and speaks regularly about women’s history and regional settlement. Can't make this event? Candice will join us in Lynden to discuss Peace Weavers on Sunday, August 27th at 3pm.

Join us in welcoming this bestselling author as he stops in Bellingham as part of a national tour promoting the paperback release of this novel, called "hugely entertaining and unfailingly smart" by the New York Times Book Review. The story: it’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson hasn’t seen his mother, Faye, in decades—not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s reappeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: she’s facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuel’s help.
