Building Community One Book at a Time
Dear Reader, The holidays are upon us and there's a great amount of book news to share. However, perhaps the biggest news is about the new Kobo eReader program (see pg. 19). For two years we've sold Google eBooks. Now we're switching to Kobo eBooks and will sell awardwinning Kobo eReaders. If you read some of your books as eBooks you'll likely be as excited about this as we are. The avid book lover will find a lot in this Reader to savor, including previews of new books and reviews and a holiday gift pick by each staff member. And, just a reminder, all previews and reviews in the Chuckanut Reader are eligible for our Risk Free Reads program. There's also information about author events, including Ken Jennings and Rick Steves, and holiday happenings around Fairhaven, including the return of the Grinch to Village Books for holiday photos. There's also an announcement of an exciting ongoing partnership with the Willows Inn, including a very special two-day event with Nancy Pearl in March (pg. 41). It's been a pretty good year at Village Books and Paper Dreams, and for that we're grateful to you, Dear Reader. We wish you a joyous holiday season and a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year.

And in case you hadn't noticed, it doesn't seem that things have gotten much better for a lot of folks. So, pick an ornament-tag from the GIVING TREE, on the store's main floor, and match it with a book of your choice. The books you purchase for giving tree recipients will be offered at a 20% discount, and will be distributed to kids, through community organizations, the week before Christmas.

PAPER DREAMS
A Great Gift... Snoozies Slippers
"These are the coziest things you will put on your feet and could be a perfect gift for absolutely anyone. I hardly take mine off at home! " –Lauren
A Great Gift... Boma Jewelry
A Great Gift... Aninotes Journals "These journals are also animations! For example, the Metamorphosis journal has a drawing on the edge of each page. If you flip rapidly through the pages, the journal becomes an animation of a caterpillar climbing a tree, building a cocoon, and then breaking out of the cocoon as a butterfly. On top of that, the journals have a great earthy feel to them. Their design, like the art inside, is simple but tasteful, making it a great gift for both kids and adults!" –Rachel M.
A Great Gift...
"Boma makes quality sterling silver jewelry, a gift that is guaranteed to last. Beautiful earrings come in hundreds of designs, from owls and other birds, to stone-settings, to studs and hoops. With necklaces and earrings, you don't have to worry about the right size, either!" –Dee
A Great Gift... The Silhouette Night Light "A great gift made from translucent porcelain. The illumination is beautiful with patterns of intricate light warming a dark room." –Kelly E.
A Great Gift... A Combination
Eangee Lamps "Eco-friendly and fair trade made with leaves from the alibangbang (it's just so fun to say) tree. Handcrafted by artisans using organic dyes." –Erika
"My perfect holiday gift would be a pair of Karen Kramer earrings with a Seattle Chocolate bar and a locally made card. Nothing else needed." –Carol B.
A Great Gift... Candles on a Rope "These gorgeous, tastefully scented candles come in a variety of colors and are ready to gift with their unique presentation. Just snip them into singles and you're ready to light them! They also come in boxed sets of four (presnipped) with a matching square candle holder." –Jenny

"Boston bootleggers, Caribbean rum runners, crooked cops, and Italian mobsters rule the streets in Dennis Lehane's engrossing portrait of Prohibition America. The author combines a profound sense of place with classical storytelling as he unfolds the career of outlaw Joe Coughlin—a career laced with rivalry, revenge, and deep family tension. It's a sizzling social commentary, wrapped in a thrilling crime adventure, presented as a comfortable read, and I enjoyed it thoroughly." —Brendan

The Passage & The Twelve: Book Two of the Passage Trilogy by Justin Cronin
available now, hardcover, Ballantine
"Cold nights curled up with a blanket and a cup of cocoa give us a chance to dig deep into a story. And if a tale spanning vast expanses of time, populated with brave adventurers and deadly quasi-vampirical creatures sounds intriguing to you, then you can't miss The Passage by Justin Cronin. Even readers who scoff at the typical vampire and zombie fare will find Cronin's book absolutely engrossing. When you're done and begging for more, go ahead and pick up the second installment of the trilogy, The Twelve, which just came out in October." —Stephanie
Blasphemy: New & Selected Stories
A Great Gift...
by Sherman Alexie
available now, hardcover, Grove Press
"I usually cannot stand short stories. Before I get a chance to engage with the story and characters, the story is over. But Alexie, in his typical, amazing way, has written short stories that absolutely blow my mind, make my heart race, and make me terribly, wonderfully uncomfortable. If you haven't read anything by him ever, I invite you to come into the store, grab a copy of the book, and read one of the stories from Blasphemy. Then decide if you've read anything so beautiful in your life." —Lindsey
Blasphemy: New & Selected Stories by Sherman Alexie
"Somehow I find Sherman Alexie's stories musical. They're stories I can feel, and that touch something in me I didn't know was there. And always there is this current of humor that swings like jazz, and makes it easy to step inside someone else's life. His characters are often at turning points, which he will then punctuate with one- line zingers that cut to the truth of the matter. I love how he does that. This generous collection of new stories also has a smattering of old favorites; so it makes a good one-volume, here-you-go treasury, to keep or to share." –Jim
JIM LYNCH Returns to Village Books Wednesday, February 27th, 7pm The Whatcom Community College Foundation is partnering with Village Books for a special program with popular Northwest author Jim Lynch on Wednesday evening, February 27th. Lynch, whose latest book, Truth Like the Sun, will have just been released in paperback, will be interviewed by Bob Winters, Arts and Humanities Division Chair at Whatcom Community College. Truth Like the Sun is a hugely entertaining political novel of urban intrigue set both in 1962, when Seattle hosted the World's Fair, and in 2001 after its transformation in the Microsoft Gold Rush. Janet Maslin, writing in the New York Times, said this: "Enveloping and propulsive...There is much marveling to be done as Truth Like the Sun unfolds. Lynch captures the excitement of a fair that proudly showed off the world of tomorrow but inadvertently revealed more than it should have."

The Round House: A Novel

available now, hardcover, Harper
"Wow. Okay. First of all, Michael Chabon writes like a devilish, freaky, dictionary on speed. Second, you have to suspend all your rationale of what the 'real world' is when you read this. Third (news flash!), the real world is awfully darn freaky. This is an engrossing epic set on the Berkeley/Oakland borderline, infused with California sunshine and funk music, Black Panthers, midwives and childbirth, fatherhood, bravery and stupidity. What starts as a trip back to the heyday of the wild Bay Area Scene flash-forwards to our current dismal economic times and trials." —Jonica
An indelible portrait of family and memory, injustice and vengeance, friendship and growing up, Louise Erdrich's remarkable novel illuminates the harsh realities of a community where Ojibwe and white live uneasily together. Erdrich writes with undeniable urgency, blending tragedy, the comic, and a spirit world very much present in its all-too-human characters' lives.
by Michael Chabon
Woes of the True Policeman by Roberto Bolaño, translated by Natasha Wimmer
available in November, hardcover, Macmillan
Featuring characters and stories from his other books, Woes of the True Policeman, his last, unfinished novel, invites the reader more than ever into the world of Roberto Bolaño. It is an exciting, kaleidoscopic novel, lyrical and intense, yet darkly humorous. Exploring the roots of memory and the limits of art, it marks the culmination of one of the great careers of world literature.
Eight Girls Taking Pictures: A Novel

The Hollow Man: A Novel by Oliver Harris
available now, paperback, HarperCollins
"I've been waiting for a while for a dark, modern mystery that was neither contrived nor painfully formulaic, and finally such a book has arrived. London detective Nick Belsey wakes up on the sidewalk next to a wrecked police car (which he apparently stole) with an outrageous hangover, broken teeth, crippling credit card debt and some serious moral deficits. In an attempt to escape from the rubble of his life, he decides to steal the identity of an eccentric millionaire who has recently disappeared. MYSTERY A Presumption of Death: A New Lord
The Cutting Season by Attica Locke
Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane Mystery
available now, hardcover, HarperCollins
"I rarely read mysteries, however I'm a sucker for just about any story that takes place in the Southeastern U.S. When I picked up The Cutting Season and began to read, I was immediately hooked. Set on an antebellum plantation in Louisiana in the present day, the story begins with the discovery of a body on the grounds by the plantation's manager, Caren Gray. As the investigation unfolds, another murder is discovered— that of Caren's ancestor, a former slave on the plantation named Jason. This book is haunting, complex, and totally compelling. A truly great read!" —Claire
by Jill Paton Walsh & Dorothy L. Sayers available in November, paperback, Macmillan
It is 1940, at the start of the Blitz, when a practice air raid ends with the murder of a Land Girl. With Peter away, Harriet is forced to investigate. This crime novel is every bit as literate, ingenious, and compelling as the best of Sayers's original Lord Peter Wimsey novels.
SCIENCE FICTION The Vampire Combat Manual: A Guide to Fighting the Bloodthirsty Undead by Roger Ma
available now, paperback, Penguin
In the inevitable event of a vampire attack, the average citizen will have little to no warning and be forced to engage in vicious hand-to-hand combat. To avoid serious injury, disfigurement, or death by exsanguination it's vital to be prepared. With detailed illustrations and firsthand accounts from vampire combat veterans, The Vampire Combat Manual is your best chance at surviving with your life and blood supply intact.
The Unreal and the Real, Selected Stories Volume I: Where on Earth & Volume II: Outer Space, Inner Lands both by Ursula K. Le Guin available in November, hardcover, Small Beer Press
This is a major event for all readers: a comprehensive selection of Ursula Le Guin’s stories made by the author herself. Volume I contains her “realistic” favorites while volume II contains the best of the “nonrealistic” stories. Like Margaret Atwood, Le Guin has always been unclassifiable. Whether “fiction” or “science fiction,” her haunting stories are beautiful, provoking, and filled with sharp satire.

Daniel Stein, Interpreter, based on a real person, ranges from before World War II to modern times, and from the shtetl to Israel to America. It is seen by many as the great Russian novel of our time, winner of the Russian National Literary Prize and the Simone de Beauvoir Prize, and nominated for the Russian Booker Novel of the Decade.
"This holiday season, as you're shopping for the son, brother, boyfriend, husband, or father in your life, I recommend Unholy Night—a frenetic, swashbuckling twist on the Nativity story. With battle scenes worthy of an action movie and emotional depth worthy of a literary classic, he will devour this book." –Brendan

"This book will draw you in from the first page. Dr. Marina Singh, a pharmaceutical research scientist, must embark on a journey to the Amazon to track down an elusive scientist working on a groundbreaking drug. What makes this journey more intriguing is that her coworker mysteriously died on the same mission. Patchett's writing is gripping and beautiful. "Hailed as the Catch-22 of our present day, Fobbit is an Iraq War comedy where the military blurs with the corporate and human stupidity reigns inescapable. David Abrams writes with wit as sharp as a bayonet, and his roaringly hilarious satire absolutely drew me in. Every war produces at least one shockingly evocative story, one which burrows beneath the artificial shell of public image and forces us to laugh at ourselves, fear ourselves, and admit that such horrific absurdity is indeed our own creation. For this war and this generation, Fobbit is that story." –Brendan

available now, paperback, Macmillan
Bad Haircut's ten rich stories, linked by a single adolescent protagonist, explore the themes that have fascinated Perrotta throughout his career: suburban rituals and mores; sports and religion; the cheerful cheesiness of American consumer life; public tests of manliness; and the moral dilemmas faced by ordinary people, parents, and teenagers alike.
That's Not a Feeling
paperback
Better Living Through Plastic Explosives by Zsuzsi Gartner
available in December, paperback, Penguin
Angels crash-land, lovers speak IKEA, a mountain swallows West Coast properties, and a killer stalks the great motivational speakers of North America. These stories ruthlessly expose our covert fears and fathomless desires and allow us to snort with laughter, while grieving at the grotesque world we'd live in if we all got what we wanted. (This is our Penguin rep's favorite book of the season.)
How It All Began: A Novel
by Dan Josefson
available now, paperback, Soho Press
by Penelope Lively
"In the Wallace/Franzen/Harbach tradition, here is a funny novel about being young and dysfunctional in 21st Century America. Set in strange, allegedly 'therapeutic' boarding school (where 'group' has become an acronym for 'Genuine Relationships Occur In Uncomfortable Proximity'), this is a highly entertaining (if slightly unsettling) coming-of-age story." —Sam
available in December, paperback, Penguin
When an elderly woman is mugged on a London street, the event begins a series of mishaps that ripple across the lives of acquaintances and strangers alike. Through a richly conceived cast of characters, Penelope Lively explores the powerful role of chance in human affairs and deftly illustrates how our paths can be altered irrevocably by someone we will never even meet.
The Invisible Ones: A Novel
Alfa Romeo 1300 and Other Miracles by Fabio Bartolomei

Three men, defined by their abject mediocrity, embark on a project to open a rustic holiday farmhouse in the Italian countryside. When a local mobster arrives and demands they pay him protection money, their attempt to run a small business in an area that organized crime syndicates consider their own becomes a quixotic act of defiance.

The Sufferings of Young Werther
by Johannn Wolfgang von Goethe, translated by Stanley Corngold available in December, paperback, Norton
In translating The Sufferings of Young Werther, Corngold follows the German text closely, never knowingly using a word that was not current in English at the time the novel was written, and yet maintaining a modern grace and flair. "Julia Pandl's new book Memoir of the Sunday Brunch is a funny book about growing up as the child of a restaurant owner. She tells witty stories about some of the mishaps, but also reveals a lot about family bonds and loyalty. I was laughing out loud at her stories and highly recommend this to anyone interested in a fun food memoir." –Christina

I have a pretty small cookbook collection at home. I've always loved winter not only for the crappy weather, but also for the cozy comforts that come after a day in the cold and wet. Quinoa apple cake, anyone?

After decades of broken treaties Dakota warriors attacked soldiers and settlers on the Minnesota frontier. Federal forces quashed the uprising and convened a hasty military court that found more than 300 Indians guilty of murder. President Lincoln intervened to spare the lives of 265 men, but still the toll was devastating: a tribe forced to relocate, and 38 warriors hanged the morning after Christmas.

Moranthology by Caitlin Moran
available in November, paperback, Harper
Moranthology is proof that London Times columnist Caitlin Moran can actually be "quite chatty" about many things other than how to be a woman, including cultural, social and political issues that are usually the province of learned professors, or hotshot wonks—and not of a woman who once, as an experiment, put a wasp in a jar, and got it stoned.

Local Author Parkinson's Dreams About Me by Rick Hermann
available now, paperback, self-published
"It is unusual to find a book written from the point of view of someone afflicted with a degenerative disease, such as Parkinson's. It is more unusual to find a well-written story about how it feels to be inside a disease that erodes all physical and emotional sense of self. What is phenomenally rare is to find such an honest, eloquent, and beautifully expressed self-examination of one's life. It takes courage just to live within our 'normal' limitations, and living with Parkinson's takes immeasurable stamina. But the biggest measure of courage is Rick's willingness to be deliberately conscious and unflinchingly honest about his innermost self. This is a self-published book, and Rick is graciously allowing us to carry it. We feel honored to be able to provide this small measure of support to a local author and valued neighbor." —Jonica

Adventures in the Pacific by Tim Flannery
by Eva Saulitis
available in November, hardcover, Atlantic Monthly
Flannery, author of The Weather Makers and discoverer of more species than Darwin, here recounts his early career exploring the far-flung islands of the South Pacific. Armchair traveler, scientist, or natural historian, you’ll enjoy this great read.
available in January, hardcover, Beacon Press
Saulitis has been drawn deeply into the lives of a family of orcas struggling to survive in Prince William Sound. Over the course of a career spent studying these whales, and eventually knowing them as individuals, she has, sadly, witnessed the devastation wrought by the Exxon Valdez oil spill—after which not a single calf has been born to the group.

Pamuk says objects speak to him, they carry stories of their own. We need only recall our own treasured objects and keepsakes to know what he means. Building Community One Book at a Time
One Book Pledger Marilyn McClellan and Village Books arrived on the Bellingham scene at nearly the same time in 1980. Marilyn's husband Donel came to be the pastor at First Congregational Church and it wasn't long until they both—along with their three children—discovered the store and became regular customers. Marilyn recalls being sent elsewhere for a copy of 84 Charing Cross Road. When that store didn't have it, the proprietor called Village Books, where she found the book. As they say, the rest is history—a three-decade history. There are few sections of the store that escape Marilyn's attention, as she loves to wander about and look at new books. The mystery section, however, is a strong magnet for her. She's been a whodunnit fan for years. "On a visit with Donel's relatives, just before we were married, I discovered a copy of an Agatha Christie book in the bathroom. I'd never read a mystery before. I don't think I came out for half an hour," she recalls. "I was hooked." Though she's read mysteries from many parts of the world—most recently Scandinavia—she's a self-described Anglophile. There are few British mystery authors she hasn't read. Marilyn is not only a reader, she's also an author. After a number of years working as a teacher and a school counselor, she was asked to write some books for young people, including one called Madeline L'Engle: Banned, Challenged and Censored. She wrote others on organ transplants and alcohol.
"People in the stores care about the people who come in there. And, while there's a special independent store aesthetic, each one reflects the owners and people who work there."
When asked what she thinks is important about independent bookstores she answers without hesitation, "people in the stores care about the people who come in there. And, while there's a special independent store aesthetic, each one reflects the owners and people who work there." Marilyn knows of what she speaks. Over the years she has visited many independent bookstores—some of them among the best in the country— including Vroman's in Pasadena, where they once lived, and R.J. Julia in Madison, Connecticut, where they often visited. When Marilyn isn't busy working on church committees or visiting with her grandchildren, you'll likely find her curled up reading, or browsing the shelves in her favorite bookstore. If you see her in the mystery section, say hi. You can learn more about the One Book Pledge at www.VillageBooks.com.

Grinch Returns to Village Books
Photos Support Blue Skies for Children Everyone has a photo with Santa, but do you have a holiday photo with the Grinch? Since 2007, Tim Chandonnet has been taking folks' photos with Dr. Seuss' grouchy Grinch—you know, the one who stole Christmas. But in spite of the Grinch's stingy disposition, the photos are a charitable undertaking, raising dollars for Blue Skies for Children. Beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving, you can have photos of you, your children, and even your pets taken with the Grinch in the VB Readings Gallery. For $10 Tim will snap your picture and provide you with a CD, from which you can print copies for all your relatives, decorate your walls, or post on Facebook. Once again, Blue Skies for Children will benefit. The Grinch will be in residence during all of the following times:
Friday & Saturday, November 23 & 24: 11am–6pm Sunday, November 25: 12pm–5pm Saturdays, December 1, 8, 15, & 22: 11am–6pm Sundays, December 2, 9, 16, & 23: 12pm–5pm

My Bad Parent: Do As I Say, Not as I Did by Troy Osinoff
available in November, paperback, Penguin
by Andrew Solomon
available in November, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
For ten years, interviewing more than 250 families, Solomon has observed not just how some families learn to deal with exceptional children, but also how they find profound meaning in doing so. An utterly original thinker, Solomon mines the eloquence of ordinary people who have somehow summoned hope and courage in the face of heartbreaking prejudice and almost unimaginable difficulty.
Illustrated with candid color photographs and the author's hilarious commentary, My Bad Parent casts a gimlet eye on the toughest issues in modern parenting, including: • What's better for a toddler —a standard or a retractable leash? • The number of feet in the air it is permissible to launch a child • The proper size paint bucket for use as a motorcycle sidecar • The right time to introduce a child to political extremism

An engaging mystery with a lead character you won’t soon forget!" –Sarah
"This book has an intriguing premise, but it's the protagonist Alina who makes it incredible. Her sense of humor made her immediately endearing and this book is both intense and hilarious." –Rachel H.

The Last Dragonslayer
available now, paperback, Ember
written by Jasper Fforde
available now, hardcover, Harcourt
In the good old days, magic was indispensable—it could both save a kingdom and clear a clogged drain. Now magic is fading: drain cleaner is cheaper than a spell, and magic carpets are used for pizza delivery. Fifteen-yearold Jennifer Strange runs Kazam, an employment agency for magicians—but it's hard to stay in business. Then the visions start, predicting the death of the world's last dragon at the hands of an unnamed Dragonslayer. If the visions are true, everything will change.
"This book really should become required reading for high school and/or college English classes. McLaughlin creates one of those tooclose-for-comfort near-futures about a society in which teenagers only learn to define their self-worth by an academic rating. Even friendships become expendable - if they won't help your score, you better ditch them." —Rachel H.
