Dear Reader,

The holiday season is always exciting, but the 2015 holiday season is excitement on steroids as we get our new location open in Lynden and join that community's holiday celebrations (see page 35). And, there will be no less excitement in Fairhaven with Fairhaven Gives Back (page 6), carriage rides (page 7), and many other events you'll see in this edition of the Reader. You'll also find recommendations from each member of the Village Books and Paper Dreams family, including those folks at the Lynden store. You'll find some of our favorite books and gift ideas throughout this issue. As always, the Reader is also packed with previews of forthcoming books, and reviews of some we've really liked. This is a season of thanks, and it's only appropriate that we thank you, Dear Reader. As we celebrate our thirty-sixth holiday season in Fairhaven and reach out to our North County community, we want to let you know how much we appreciate your support of local business and your community. We wish you a joyous holiday season, and may you have a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year.

Fairhaven Gives Back

RHA VEN FAI

Thursday, November 12th When you’re doing your holiday shopping this year, don’t just pay; pay it forward. That’s the message of Fairhaven Gives Back, an annual event hosted by the Historic Fairhaven Association. Held two weeks before Thanksgiving—on Thursday, November 12th—Fairhaven Gives Back helps holiday shoppers support local businesses as well as their favorite local nonprofits with each purchase they make. It’s a brilliantly simple idea: When shoppers make a purchase at participating Fairhaven businesses or restaurants, 10% of the sale is donated to the nonprofit of the shopper’s choosing from a list of up to 20 Whatcom charities. Since the event was first launched in 2013, Fairhaven Gives Back has raised more than $3500 for local nonprofits.

November 28th is

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY and indies FIRST A Day Dedicated to Supporting Small Businesses —and Independent Bookstores— Across the Country Small Business Saturday serves as a reminder to keep local businesses in mind when preparing for the holidays. When you Shop Small, the money you spend in the community can stay in the community. Conceived by American Express and first observed on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, encouraging holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are local. Register your American Express card at shopsmall.com in advance and receive a special bonus from AmEx for purchases made on Nov. 28th at Village Books and Paper Dreams and at other eligible small businesses. Indies First is a campaign in support of independent bookstores by authors and publishers. Sherman Alexie came up with the idea for writers to support their local indies by volunteering to work at a store on Small Business Saturday in 2013. Alexie called the appeal “Indies First.” This year, bestselling author Cheryl Strayed is leading the call for her fellow authors to get behind Indies First for the 2015 holiday season. Stop by Village Books and Paper Dreams for great recommendations from local authors and our knowledegable staff.

Thanks for Shopping Indie!

FICTION

A Great Gift... Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

"Groff's story of a twenty-four year marriage is as unexpected as it is brilliant. Fiction doesn't get any finer than this." –Joan

Unspeakable Things by Kathleen Spivack

available in January, hardcover, Knopf

A strange, haunting, debut novel about survival and love in all its forms: about sexual awakenings and dark secrets, about European refugee intellectuals who’ve fled Hitler’s armies with dreams intact and who have come to an elusive new (American) “can-do, will-do” world they cannot seem to find. A novel steeped in surreal storytelling and beautiful music that transports its half-broken souls—and us—to another realm of the senses.

FICTION

The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel

available in February, hardcover, Spiegel & Grau

From the author of Life of Pi, this is an allegorical novel about faith and loss told in three intersecting narratives. The story starts in Lisbon at the turn of the 20th century, then visits mid-20th century, and, finally, current day. Martel is a master observer of human foibles and is an excellent storyteller.

And West is West by Ron Childress

available now, hardcover, Algonquin

An Air Force drone pilot is tasked with launching a missile against a suspected terrorist even though women and children are in the crosshairs. On Wall Street, a young quant develops an algorithm that profits his clients by exploiting the instability caused by this kind of antiterrorist strike. These minor players’ actions have global implications. Winner of the prestigious PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction.

The Early Stories of Truman Capote by Truman Capote

The pledge is a commitment to buy, in any given month, one fewer book from online sellers and chain stores and one more book from Village Books and Paper Dreams.

My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout

available in January, hardcover, Random House

Looking for your next book club pick? This is it, the latest from Pulitzer prize-winner, Elizabeth Strout (Olive Kittredge). Told in Strout’s emblematic sparse prose, we see Lucy Barton’s complicated bond with her mother. Through hospital bedside conversations, Lucy’s past and present are revealed—her complex relationships with her husband and daughters, her difficult childhood overshadowed by poverty, and her road to a life of her own choosing. Brilliant and complex, this novel will leave your book club mulling ideas over for hours. –Laurie

360-671-2626 • 800-392-BOOK • villagebooks.com

available now, hardcover, Random House

His prose: witty, poignant, and crystalclear. His characters: solitary, observant young children; charming and naïve young women, and aging urban sophisticates worn down by cynicism. His settings: the rural South of his childhood and the cosmopolitan New York of the 1940s. This collection offers readers the opportunity to see the confident first steps of one of the 20th century’s most-acclaimed writers onto the path that would lead to his most beloved works.

Eleanor

by Jason Gurley

by Sunil Yapa

available in January, hardcover, Crown Publishing

available in January, hardcover, Lee Boudreaux Books

This electrifying debut novel takes place during the 1999 anti-globalization riots in Seattle, WA. It follows a handful of unforgettable characters who are all integral parts of the mayhem on this particular day. But the real star here is Yapa's colorful language, a style reminiscent of Junot Diaz for its poetic playfulness and urgency.

In a tale of magic and fantasy, Portland author Jason Gurley takes us to a place where tragedy can be averted and time exists in more than one dimension. Twins Esme and Eleanor have been violently torn apart, yet somehow this family must be healed. This is a story of redemption you will not be able to put down. –Laurie

Carrying Albert Home: The Somewhat True Story of a Man, His Wife, and Her Alligator

After Alice

by Gregory Maguire available now, hardcover, William Morrow & Company

by Homer Hickam

From the vivid imagination that brought you the story of the Wicked Witch of the West now comes the wondrous adventures of Ada. And just who is Ada? Why, she is the friend who follows young Alice down the rabbit hole! With an always impressive skill for retelling a story and with a truly unique wit, Gregory Maguire manages to make Ada’s Wonderland adventure fresh and new, even though she is following right along in Alice’s footsteps. –Hana

available now, hardcover, William Morrow

Carrying Albert Home is the funny, sweet, and sometimes tragic tale of a young couple and a special alligator on a crazy 1000-mile adventure. Told with warmth and down-home charm Homer Hickam's rollicking tale is ultimately a testament to that strange and marvelous emotion we inadequately call love. The story takes place post depression and is a real charmer.

Rolf Glass

This historical novel is a portrayal of the red scare of the 1950s, in particular the ”trial” and execution of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. The events are seen through the eyes of Millie Stein, a fictional neighbor and friend of the Rosenbergs. The author captures the uncertainty under which citizens lived while McCarthy and the FBI ran rampant during some of America’s darkest times. The detail is amazing and the story is intimate and absorbing—one of those books which made my heart beat faster and kept me up late, unable to put the story aside to sleep. –Terri

Science Fiction Now in Paperback!

Heraclix and Pomp: A Novel of the Fabricated and the Fey

by Forrest Aguirre

available now, paperback, Underland Press

Before being sewn together Heraclix was a dead pile of mismatched pieces. And Pomp was immortal—at least, so she thought. That was before her impossible near-murder at the hands of the necromancer, Heraclix's creator. But when playing God, even the smallest error is a gargantuan weakness. When the necromancer makes his, Heraclix and Pomp begin their epic flight. Somewhere between fantasy and mythology, like all great stories, at its heart this is a discussion of identity, immortality, and what it means to be truly alive.

A Great Gift... The Dead Lands by Benjamin Percy

"One of the most imaginative and unusual reads of the year, I thoroughly enjoyed this epic tale of dystopia and cross-country travel from Saint Louis to the Columbia River. I loved the use of historic characters’ names (such as Lewis and Clark)." –Jonica

A Great Gift... The Martian by Andy Weir

"I'm not crazy about science fiction, but I loved this book. It won the indie debut of the year award, and is now a major motion picture." –Chuck

California’s Wild Edge: The Coast in Poetry, Prints, and History

by Tom Killion with Gary Snyder available now, hardcover, Heyday Books

I am a huge fan of Tom Killion’s hand-carved Japanese-styled wood block prints, as well as Gary Snyder’s poetry. This wonderful collaboration showcases the unique Pacific Californian style of pictures, poetry, and prose influenced by the Japanese. Not only is it a delight to look at and read, it includes fascinating stories of events not covered in most history books, and the development of California’s stubbornly unique culture. –Jonica

Portraits: John Berger on Artists by John Berger

available now, hardcover, Verso Books

Portraits. The title tricked me into imagining something dr y and textbook-ish. I was so wrong. This large collection of writing from the legendary author of Ways of Seeing has blindsided me in the depth and intimacy with which he explores each artist. From the surprising revelation of who his favorite artist of all time is (I'm not telling), to the personal letters he wrote to his dear friend, Juan Munoz, after his passing, and to the treatment of Pollock and Krasner as one portrait instead of two, I am captivated. This is a book meant to be savored by anyone who appreciates art. –Claire

Bob Dylan All the Songs:

My Life (So Far) In Song

The Story Behind Every Track

by Sara Bareilles

by Philippe Margotin and Jean-Michel Guesdon

available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

available in November, hardcover, Black Dog and Leventhal

This is the only book to tell the stories behind all 492 songs Dylan released. Margotin and Guesdon recount the details that led to the composition of Dylan's recorded songs, what went on in the recording studio, what instruments he used, and behind-the-scenes accounts of the great artists that Dylan worked with.

For the lovely Sara Bareilles, authenticity as a musician and as a person is something she has strived for her whole life, including within this book. In Sounds Like Me ,Sara has written a collection of essays, each titled with an original song she has written. She describes the highs and lows of childhood, rising to stardom, struggling with body image, and the subtleties of the heart. Hilarious, beautiful, and devastatingly honest, this book is a great read for musicians and music fans alike. It sounds like her. –Elise

Chuck and Dee Robinson’s

ART COLLECTION By Northwest Washington Artists will be featured in the Fine Arts Gallery

at the Jansen Art Center

December 3 – January 29 by Karen Bacon, Art Director at the Jansen Art Center, Lynden, WA When Chuck and Dee offered to loan their collection for an exhibit at the Jansen Art Center, I was intrigued and excited by the idea. They invited me to their home where they shared stories about the local artists whose work filled their walls—a large collection of colorful paintings of Northwest scenes, as well as captivating masks, and beautiful pottery. The Jansen Art Center will present the Robinson’s collection “salon style” as it hangs in their home. We are pleased to showcase the creativity and fine art of the many talented Northwest artists whose works are presented in this personal exhibition. Our exhibit will feature 36 pieces, including five paintings by Susan Bennerstrom who has a solo exhibit at the J in October and November. The list of artists’ names is impressive and well known in our region: Tom Wood, John Cole, Donna Auer, Judge David Nichols, Lisa McShane, Sybil Sanford, Dederick Ward, Tom Sherwood, Vicki Canada, Ben Mann, Mary Froderberg, and more. With the Robinson’s dedication to supporting their community, it is no surprise that their art collection is promised to the Whatcom Museum. As Lynden celebrates the opening of the Waples Mercantile Building this fall, the Jansen Art Center extends a warm and appreciative welcome to Chuck and Dee Robinson and the Village Books and Paper Dreams family as our new neighbors!

An exhibit of twelve paintings by well-known Bellingham artist Susan Bennerstrom continues at the Jansen Art Center through Wednesday, November 24th. Her paintings are in numerous public and private collections throughout Washington State and throughout the world, from Ballycastle, Ireland, to Istanbul, Turkey. Pictured here is Morning Light, Turkey, one of several Bennerstrom paintings from Chuck and Dee's collection.

A History

A New Book by Brian Griffin It's been a long time in the making, and was temporarily set aside while Brian worked on the J.J. Donovan exhibition and book, but his longawaited Fairhaven book should be here before Christmas. Lacing together untold years of research, Brian traces the history of this beloved Bellingham neighborhood from its geologic roots to its latest boom. Though the exact publication date has not yet been set, the book is expected in the store early in December. Watch our website and eNewsletters for information on signings at the store. There must be a number of folks on your list for whom this would make the ideal holiday gift.

MORE MURDER An Interview with Todd Warger With Brendan Clark, Village Books Publishing Director

As many of you may know, local historian Todd Warger's latest book was just released in October though Village Books' in-house publishing imprint, Chuckanut Editions. More Murder in the Fourth Corner is the highly anticipated followup to Murder in the Fourth Corner, last year's creepy collection of true crime stories, drawn from the earliest homicide cases recorded in Whatcom County. I recently sat down with Todd to chat about this new batch of historical killings: Q: What inspired you to bring these homicide cases back into the public eye, over a century after they occurred? A: What inspired me to resurrect these stories really comes from several directions. My background is in history and research, and having the opportunity to play a sleuth becomes enticing and exciting when looking into old case files. Nearly every case throws me a curveball from where I thought I would be going. So, I would have to say it’s the detective work that thrills me most. Q: What surprised you the most as you researched these books? A: I’m surprised where these cases led me, and I’m amazed how the stories became lost with time. Bellingham and Whatcom County have had some very heinous murders in the past, which one would think hard to forget. The 1907 Addie Roper murder in Blaine for instance was brutal in all its commitment. It was reported in newspapers along the entire west coast. Some murders appear to be simple slayings, but are discovered to have great backstories. Several cases from the area went to the state Supreme Court and set precedents. Many still went unsolved due the lack of scientific methods available, while others were solved by good old-fashioned detective work. Q: What patterns or trends did you notice in the details of these murders, the reaction in the media at the time, and the court cases that followed? A: The reasons for murder, a hundred plus years ago, were no different than those committed today. They occurred or were committed out of greed, hate, drunkenness, robbery, rowdiness run amok, domestic violence, jealousy, etc. But murder tended to be more brutal as it was usually committed close-up with a knife, an axe, or a savage beating utilizing anything handy at the time. Guns were used as well, but rarely from distances. The deed was usually close and personal. The methods applied in solving cases; the justice system; courts and media were different as well. Detectives and police officers were appointed or elected as law enforcement, bringing little or no knowledge to the job. Sleuthing was a matter of observation,

hunches, gut feelings, reasoning, and collecting evidence at the scene. Witnesses were unreliable, but you stood a better chance if witnesses were persons of means and importance. When captured, most anyone could just walk in the jail and visit the prisoner, especially the press. Newspapers widely enhanced and sensationalized the gruesomeness of the slayings to sell as many papers as possible. Writings were far more explicit than reporting today, printing about wound descriptions and how the victims appeared in death. That said, reporters sat in on the trials, and surprisingly their reporting was as accurate as the court transcripts. Q: Apart from the addition of Skagit County, what makes the cases presented in your new book different from those detailed last year in the original Murder in the Fourth Corner? A: In addition to murder stories from Skagit County and murder stories that cross between the U.S./Canadian border, I have also added several dozen portrait images of law enforcement, attorneys, coroners, and judges who have appeared in both books. Q: What do you expect readers to be most shocked or intrigued by as they read your new book? A: More Murder in the Fourth Corner will be an exciting read. Readers will find eleven stories from 1858 to 1937. One murder discusses the Castle Law, as a precedent case regarding defending one's home was decided here. An unsolved double-murder on Lummi Island; the death of a hermit and a beheading at the Sumas border detention center, are sure to get people talking. Plus, I have two guest writers who have contributed well-researched stories. •

by Simon Winchester

available in November, hardcover, HarperCollins

Today, the Pacific is ascendant. Its geological history has long transformed us—tremendous earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis—but its human history, from a Western perspective, is quite young, beginning with Magellan's sixteenth century circumnavigation. It is a natural wonder whose most fascinating history is currently being made and Winchester's storytelling is second to none.

God, Godless, & Good

Confronting Religious Violence

by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

available now, hardcover, Schocken Books

Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, brings a trove of information from many disciplines— history, psychology, and sociology—to this treatise on what has become our time’s most pressing evil: terrorism in the name of religion. Some he describes as sibling rivalry between the Abrahamic faiths. He also details the dangers of dualism inherent in fundamentalism. But if this sounds like a formidable book—it is not. Sacks’ interpretation of scripture, science and culture is clear, readable and fascinating. I gained more understanding from this book than I can easily express in a paragraph, and I find myself sharing the stories with anyone willing to listen. –Terri

Battling the Gods: Atheism in the Ancient World

by Tim Whitmarsh

available in November, hardcover, Knopf

Long before the Enlightenment sowed the seeds of disbelief in a deeply Christian Europe, atheism was a matter of serious public debate in the Greek world. But history is written by those who prevail, and the Age of Faith mostly suppressed the lively free-thinking voices of antiquity. Whitmarsh brings to life the fascinating musings of Diagoras of Melos; Democritus, the first materialist; and especially Epicurus and his followers.

The Good Book: Writers Reflect on Favorite Bible Passages edited by Andrew Blaumer available in November, hardcover, Simon and Schuster

As the title states, this is an anthology of essays relating to various passages from the Bible. However, the authors are not all religious and come from a variety of backgrounds, leading to quite a diverse collection of perspectives. Their reflections and personal stories are quite thought-provoking. –Chris

It's been more than twenty years since the horrors of the Rwandan genocide, and at a glance, the nation appears to be a place of peace and progress. Behind this appealing veil, however, is a controlling state with no tolerance for dissenting voices. When Anjan Sundaram (author of “Stringer”) went to Rwanda to teach local reporters as part of an internationally funded program, his students showed him a pervasive culture of fear and secrecy, and the challenges of reporting the news freely in a country that is anything but free. This sobering, readable account of his experiences is timely, important and well worth picking up. –Sam

Two Hours: The Quest to Run the Impossible Marathon

by Ed Caesar

The Road to Little Dribbling : Adventures of an American in Britain

by Bill Bryson

available in January, hardcover, Doubleday

In 1995 Bill Bryson got into his car and took a farewell trip around England before moving his family back to the US. Two decades later, he set out again to rediscover that country, and the result is The Road to Little Dribbling.

available now, hardcover, Arcade Publishing

This book opens with a fall on K2 that the author very nearly could not stop, down a vertical rock ramp leading to a threethousand-foot drop. The qualities that saved him then on K2 drove his sixteenyear journey to summit all of the world's eight-thousanders (fourteen peaks that exceed 8,000 meters) and climb into the death zone. Incredibly, he accomplished that feat without the aid of bottled oxygen for all but one mountain. During twenty-three expeditions, he spent a total of three years clinging to the sides of dangerous mountains.

Young Adult Arrows

by Melissa Gorzelanczyk available in January, hardcover, Delacorte Press

What I expected to be a complete guilty pleasure read surprised me with a heartfelt tale of love and friendship. This little book tackles the love between a mother and child, as well as the selflessness that accompanies a pure romance. While simple in its delivery this little novel asks the questions what would we do for the ones we love, and how far are we willing to go for their happiness? Karma is a goddess in her own right tackling teen motherhood, young unrequited love, and a dream for the future for both herself and her daughter. Aaryn on the other hand must deal with not only his own mistakes, but the growing political struggle that may have a drastic effect on the future for those he has come to care about. Arrows is a tender story about being young, human, and learning to love. –Hayden

Da Vinci's Tiger by L.M. Elliott

Ginevra de' Benci. This mysterious figure is the subject of one of Leonardo da Vinci's earliest, groundbreaking masterpieces. In Da Vinci's Tiger, Elliott imagines her story, based on known fragments from history and the only surviving scrap of Ginevra's own poetry: "I ask your forgiveness and I am a mountain tiger." Beautifully told, Ginevra's inspiring story as she navigates Florence during the Renaissance, a time when women were to be seen and not heard, is both captivating and empowering. –Hana

It's a Wonderful Death

I'm From Nowhere

available now, hardcover, Sky Pony Press

available in January, hardcover, Soho Teen

by Sarah J. Schmitt

Sarah J. Schmitt's debut novel, It's a Wonderful Death, is a hilariously witty book about a selfish, spoiled and sassy teenage girl whose soul gets mistakenly collected by a grim reaper. Immediately, her mission is to convince everyone in the afterlife to return her to her life. She is given a choice: stay in the afterlife or replay three moments in her life where she could have made a better choice to see if she can make better choices the second time around. This is a charming book with great character development that is definitely worth a read. –Kirsten N., age 14

Up to this Pointe by Jennifer Longo

For most of Up to this Pointe, you are wondering why on earth Harper is in Antarctica. You can only assume that something went wrong with the Plan. Yes, the Plan, the one that details exactly how and when Harper and her best friend Kate will make it into the San Francisco Ballet. The view alternates between Harper in San Francisco and Harper in Antarctica. Hearts are won and broken, friendships made and gone astray, and dreams found and shattered in Harper’s wild yet relatable journey to find herself. —Brynna K., age 15

by Suzanne Myers

When her journalist mother takes a job in Greenland, Wren's life changes forever. She's shipped off to Hardwick Hall, the prestigious boarding school her mother attended—and where she met Wren's mysterious father. by Richelle Mead available in November, hardcover, Razorbill

In a world without sound, what happens when one girl suddenly regains hers? That's what happens in this book to Fei, a teenage girl accustomed to speaking through sign language in a small village in the mountains. However, when the village starts to lose their supplies usually sent up from below the mountain and many villagers start losing their sight too, Fei realizes her newfound ability to hear might just save her village and home. A thrilling book with a unique perspective on sounds and sights, I highly recommend this book to those who are looking for a well-written novel like no other. –Abby, age 15

Young Widows Club

The Killing Jar

available in November, hardcover, Farrar, Straus and Giroux

available in January, hardcover, Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Seventeen-year-old Tam had just married her amazing musician boyfriend and moved into a new house with him, overcome with the joys of marriage. A few weeks later, he died in his sleep. Shell-shocked and grief-stricken, Tam is forced to return to the real world, and that means high school, parents, and..a widows club? An interesting look at young marriage, life, and grief, this book strikes a chord with its realistic look at the stages of grieving and reaching out to others, even the ones you didn't expect. I highly recommend to anyone struggling with grief of their own or anyone with a grieving loved one. –Abby, age 15

In this haunting and beautiful urban fantasy, Jennifer Bosworth tells the tale of a teenage girl named Kenna with a dark power that she doesn't understand and her mother refuses to talk about. But one day, when a man violently attacks her mother and sister, Kenna's mother realizes that she has to take her to an isolated compound that is the only way to help, but the compound isn't what it seems and Kenna quickly learns that staying there may kill her. I recommend this unique read to lovers of the weird, creepy, and fantastical. –Gretal M., age 15

The Lies about Truth by Courtney Stevens

by Jennifer Bosworth

Young Adults Recommend...

available in November, hardcover, Harper Teen

After a car crash killed Trent and sent her through the windshield, Sadie can’t stand her friends, avoids crowds, and only runs at night, when no one can see her scars. She emails Trent’s brother, Max, to cope. As the anniversary of the crash approaches and Max returns home, Sadie begins to emerge from her isolation, trying to forgive and wear tanktops in public, while receiving mysterious, painful notes. It’s astonishing how good this book is. Courtney Stevens can swing between lightness and depth without forcing it. The Lies About the Truth was unexpectedly brilliant, with powerful characters and writing. –Haleh M., age 16

Lessons Found at Death’s Door

Have humans really tamed every inch of the world? In our overheated and overcrowded planet, are wild places now an endangered species? Environmental journalist Jason Mark shows that the rumors of the demise of wilderness have been greatly exaggerated. He explores how wilderness and wild places are a touchstone for reminding us of our connection to nature and delves into why that relationship is important, raising critical questions about the future of the planet.

Mike and Anne Mikkelsen conclude their 30-year journey with Parkinson's. Having recognized a new and powerful tenderness, Mike prepares for his ultimate adventure with the same creativity he demonstrated all his life, generously sharing his obsessions, his hallucinations, and his gratitude. Anne, immersed in his world, discovers that the most profound lessons in life can be found at death's door. Love's Last Measure is a story nourished by humor and tears, love and light, as Mike takes charge mastering the fine art of dying.
