villagebooks.com Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader, In a time of dire headlines and news stories crafted with the intention of inciting outrage, we at Village Books and Paper Dreams often find ourselves in a veritable oasis of warm feelings and optimism. Whether we're talking with those patiently waiting in the long line to talk with Australian author Markus Zusak and hearing story after personal story of how much they treasure The Book Thief for helping them to love reading again, or the man in his later years who finally attended his very first book group and marveled at how life and mind-changing it can be to connect with others in this way, or whenever someone discovers that next perfect read that they never new existed. Our thoughtful and caring staff go home at the end of each day, buoyed by these small confessions that provide peeks into how books bring us together and help us along our journey — knowing that in some small way, we are helping to provide a safe haven to those special people in our community who strive every day to make this a better place to live. Thank you, Dear Reader, for sharing your lives with us and, in turn, welcoming us into yours. Warmest of wishes to you and yours, now and all year long.

November 30th is

indies FIRST and SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY A Day Dedicated to Supporting Small Businesses — and Independent Bookstores — Across the Country Village Books and Paper Dreams joins forces with independent businesses nationwide to mark Small Business Saturday and Indies First on Saturday, November 30, a day dedicated to supporting the local businesses that help create jobs, boost the economy, and preserve neighborhoods. Small Business Saturday is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, encouraging holiday shoppers to patronize brick-and-mortar businesses that are local. Indies First is the national campaign of activities and events in support of independent bookstores that takes place on Small Business Saturday. Independent bookstores host authors as honorary booksellers to help handsell their favorite titles and sign books,

FAIRHAVEN – We’ll have two celebrated local authors on hand to sign copies of their books and talk about THEIR favorite reads this season. 11am-noon: Spencer Ellsworth, author of The Great Faerie Strike, will join us. Local memoirist Sean Dwyer will be here from noon-1pm to sign copies of his new book, The Quest for Tears. Both of these titles will make great gifts this season! Thanks for Supporting Local!

Events like Indies First emphasize how small, local businesses contribute to a community’s cultural experiences. But there are also significant economic impacts. According to the American Independent Business Alliance, Independent retailers return to their community more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than do chain competitors. And by supporting your locals instead of online giants, your sales taxes are reinvested right where they belong — into your community.

Marley

Such a Fun Age

available now, hardcover, Atria

available in December, hardcover, G.P. Putnam’s Sons

In Jon Clinch’s ingenious novel, Jacob Marley, business partner to Ebenezer Scrooge, is very much alive: a rapacious and cunning boy who grows up to be a forger, a scoundrel, and the man who will be both the making and the undoing of Scrooge. They meet as youths, begin a twisted friendship, and their shared ambition manifests itself in a fledgling shipping empire. With their business interests inextricably bound together and instincts for secrecy and greed bred in their very bones, the two men engage in a shadowy war of deception, false identities, forged documents, theft, and cold-blooded murder.

A striking debut novel from an exhilarating new voice, Such a Fun Age is a bighearted story about race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her wellintentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both. With empathy and piercing social commentary, this novel explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone “family,” and the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

A Great Gift... An Absolutely Remarkable Thing

available now, hardcover, Simon and Schuster

by Hank Green

In Berlin, at the time when the world changed, Hanni Kohn knows she must send her 12-year-old daughter away to save her from the Nazis. She finds her way to a renowned rabbi, but it's his daughter, Ettie, who offers hope of salvation when she creates a mystical Jewish creature, a rare and unusual golem, who is sworn to protect Lea. Once Ava is brought to life, she and Lea and Ettie become eternally entwined. In a world where evil can be found at every turn, we meet remarkable characters that take us on a stunning journey of loss and resistance.

"This whimsical, thought-provoking (dare I say remarkable?) debut novel has already won over the hearts of many. After April May broadcasts her finding of a giant sculpture in the middle of New York City she is launched overnight into stardom. In this crazy alternate reality where martian sculptures appear all around the world, Green is able to provide interesting commentary on internet fame and its effect on relationships, and the incredible way the internet can bring people together, as well as polarize them. Now in paperback!" –Cherie

A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende

available in January, hardcover, Ballantine Books

Roser, a pregnant young widow fleeing Franco’s regime, finds her life intertwined with that of Victor, an army doctor and the brother of her deceased love. In order to survive, the two must unite in marriage, and together are sponsored by Pablo Neruda to embark on the SS Winnipeg in search of a new life. As unlikely partners, they embrace exile and emigrate to Chile as the rest of Europe erupts in World War.

Under Occupation by Alan Furst

available in November, hardcover, Random House

Paris, 1942: just before he dies, a man being chased by the Gestapo hands off to Paul Ricard a strange looking drawing. It looks like a part for a military weapon; Ricard realizes it must be an important document smuggled out of Germany to aid the resistance. As Ricard is drawn deeper into the French resistance, his increasingly dangerous assignments lead him to travel to Germany, and to meet the mysterious Leila, a professional spy.

The Man Who Saw Everything by Deborah Levy

available now, hardcover, Bloomsbury

Levy has accomplished something rare-a novel with an odd but endearing humor that shifts seamlessly into tender melancholy. The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

available in November, hardcover, Doubleday

It's been eight years since we were captivated by The Night Circus and the long wait is finally over. Morgenstern's latest novel is just as, if not more, magical than the last. It's a beautiful, never-ending onslaught of stunning imagery. Zachary, a gamer and bibliophile is following a white rabbit into a mysterious world of books, missing people, and strange characters, all floating on an underground sea of honey. You'll get swept away by this tale! –Claire

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

available in November, hardcover, Harper

Kevin Wilson’s best book yet — a moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with remarkable and disturbing abilities: the twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. With white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Wilson has written a most unusual story of parental love.

A Great Gift... The Travelling Cat Chronicles

Hollow Kingdom

Kira Jane Buxton

by Kira Jane Buxton

"There is no better gift for your favorite reader than this novel narrated by a foul-mouthed, but lovable crow named S.T. He navigates Seattle with his best friend Dennis the hound in this post-apocalyptic adventure. Entirely narrated by animals, this book is by turns hilarious, heart-wrenching, and so dang smart" –Claire

available now, hardcover, Nan A. Talese

Finally, it's here and it does not disappoint. For those of us who wanted more; more Gilead, more backstory, more answers, now we get them. Told in three feminine voices central to the original story, I was most captivated by that of Lydia, the most powerful of the Aunts. We learn who she is, who she was, and what her secret plan has been all along. A corrupt and controlling government like that of Gilead can't last forever. –Claire

With his fictional exploration of language via a champion top-level high school debate competitor, Lerner seems like the kind of Very Important Writer I would normally roll my eyes at. But he heartily succeeds in exposing the ridiculousness of political discourse and how it’s closer to violence than actual communication. I was won over by his ability to write powerfully without sacrificing character development, and it’s a book I can’t stop thinking about. –Stephanie

Fantasy & Science Fiction Ninth House

by Leigh Bardugo available now, hardcover, Flatiron Books

Alex knew one thing: she could see them. The ghosts. Darlington knew another: they couldn’t hurt you. Except he was wrong. When Alex is accepted to Yale and inducted as a member of Lethe House – playing police to the campus’s magic users – she and her mentor, Darlington, stumble upon something ancient and dark that could tie the Houses of the Veil to a slew of murders. But in a world of magic and capital greed, finding the truth might also mean finding your grave. Bardugo’s debut adult novel is vicious, lush, and it doesn’t pull its punches. –Rachel

Well-loved author Leigh Bardugo’s first foray into the world of adult books is not so much a splash as it is a cannonball of darkness and paranormal activity. An addicting journey through Yale’s secret societies and its ghostly happenings, as well as a masterfully woven portrayal of living with trauma, Ninth House is not one for you to sink your teeth into. Rather, it’s one that will sink its teeth into you. –Hana

Dahlia Black by Keith Thomas "The Pulse altered every living thing: was it destiny or contrived manipulation out of our control? Three ragtag rebels waging an endless war for the fate of the world against an all-powerful corporation. Jeff VanderMeer's Dead Astronauts presents a City with no name of its own where, in the shadow of the allpowerful Company, lives human and otherwise converge in terrifying and miraculous ways. At stake: the fate of the future, the fate of Earth — all the Earths.

by J.D. Barker and Dacre Stoker available now, paperback, G.P. Putnam’s Sons

120 years later, and this is the first prequel to Dracula ever endorsed by Bram Stoker’s Estate. Vera Violet

by Melissa Anne Peterson available in February, paperback, Counterpoint

Watch out for this one as this debut is poised to take the Pacific NW literary world by storm. Melissa Anne Peterson writes about aimless teenagers in a depressed logging town like a pro, as if she's been doing this for eons. Her voice is poetic and transcendent, taking us deep into the desperation of our heroine, Vera Violet, as she navigates a life with little opportunity, and a fierce devotion to one Jimmy James Blood. This is a book that will haunt readers deeply. –Claire

Poetry Poems from the Edge of Extinction : An Anthology of Poems in Rare and Endangered Languages

Is, Is Not : Poems

edited by Chris McCabe

available now, paperback, Graywolf Press

available in December, hardcover, Chambers

Restorative in every sense, Is, Is Not is the kind of book that takes a lifetime to write — a book of the spirit made manifest by the poet’s unrelenting gaze and her intimate engagement with the mysteries that keep us reaching. These poems upend our notions of linear time, evoke the spirit and sanctity of place, and hover daringly at the threshold of what language can nearly deliver while offering alternative corollaries as gifts of its failures.

by Tess Gallagher

Featuring award-winning poets from cultures as diverse as the Ainu people of Japan to the Zoque of Mexico, this evocative collection gathers together 50 of the finest poems in endangered, or vulnerable, languages from across the continents. Each poem appears in its original form, alongside an English translation, and is accompanied by a commentary about the language, the poet and the poem - in a vibrant celebration of life, diversity, language, and the enduring power of poetry.

COOKING

The Joy of Cooking, Fully Revised and Updated

Find the cookbooks along with fun food and cooking items in Paper Dreams!

by Irma Rombauer et al.

available in November, hardcover, Scribner

In the nearly 90 years since Irma S. Rombauer self-published the first three thousand copies of Joy of Cooking in 1931, it has become the kitchen bible, with more than 20 million copies in print. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded by Irma’s greatgrandson John Becker and his wife, Megan Scott. John and Megan developed more than 600 new recipes for this edition, tested and tweaked thousands of classic recipes, and updated every section of every chapter to reflect the latest ingredients and techniques available to today’s home cooks.

A Great Gift...

Vietnamese Food Any Day: Simple Recipes for True, Fresh Flavors

I Can Cook Vegan

by Isa Chandra Moskowitz available now, hardcover, Abrams

Each chapter is a building block to becoming a better, more competent cook. The book teaches readers to cook the way someone might learn a new instrument: master a couple of chords, and then start to put them together to form songs. Each chapter starts with a fresh mission, and readers will cook their way through pastas, salads, sandwiches, bowls, sautés, sheet-pan suppers, and sweets — more than 125 recipes!— until they are ultimately the Best Cook Imaginable.

History

Stolen : Five Free Boys Kidnapped Into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home by Richard Bell

available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

Philadelphia, 1825: five young, free black boys fall into the clutches of the most fearsome gang of kidnappers and slavers in the United States. Lured onto a small ship with the promise of food and pay, they are instead met with blindfolds, ropes, and knives. Their ordeal shines a glaring spotlight on the Reverse Underground Railroad, a black market network of human traffickers and slave traders who stole away thousands of legally free African Americans from their families in order to fuel slavery’s rapid expansion in the decades before the Civil War.

The World Aflame : A New History of War and Revolution 1914-1945

by Dan Jones and Marina Amaral available in December, hardcover, Pegasus Books

Dan Jones and Marina Amaral tell the epic, harrowing, and world-changing story — in narrative form with colorized images — of global conflict from the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand to the obliteration of Hiroshima by the first atom bomb. The World Aflame embraces not only the total conflagrations of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 and the tensions, ideologies and economic forces that set them in motion, but also the revolutions in Russia; civil wars in Ireland and Spain; American interventions in Latin America, colonial wars in Morocco, Ethiopia, and Palestine; and events on the domestic ‘fronts’ of nations.

The Second Founding : How

the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution

History Day by Day : 366 Voices from the Past

by Peter Furtado

available now, paperback, Thames and Hudson

History Day by Day presents an original perspective on over two millennia of human history through 366 quotations, one for each day of the year, including leap years. Each quotation, tied to the anniversary of a significant historical event, captures that moment with the immediacy of an eyewitness or the narrative flair of a chronicler.

All Blood Runs Red : The Legendary Life of Eugene Bullard-Boxer, Pilot, Soldier, Spy

by Phil Keith, Tom Clavin

available in November, hardcover, Harper

For readers of Unbroken, The Boys in the Boat, and Hidden Figures, the incredible life story of Eugene Bullard, the first African American military pilot to fly in combat, and the only African American pilot in World War I, who went on to become a self-taught jazz musician, a Paris nightclub impresario, a spy in the French Resistance, and finally an American civil rights pioneer, by the award-winning and bestselling historians Phil Keith and Tom Clavin.

Checkpoint Charlie : The Cold War, The Berlin Wall, and the Most Dangerous Place on Earth by Iain MacGregor

by Eric Foner

available in November, hardvoer, Scribner

available now, hardcover, W.W. Norton

As the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall approaches in 2019, MacGregor captures the essence of the mistrust, oppression, paranoia, and fear throughout this period. Here we have the nerve-wracking confrontation between the West and USSR, highlighting such important global figures as Eisenhower, Stalin, JFK, Khrushchev, Reagan, and other politicians of the period. He also includes never-before-heard interviews with the men who built and dismantled the Wall; children who crossed it; relatives and friends who lost loved ones trying to escape over it; military policemen and soldiers who guarded the checkpoints; and many more whose living memories contributed to the full story of Checkpoint Charlie.

Eric Foner’s compact, insightful history traces the arc of the pivotal 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments from their dramatic origins in pre–Civil War mass meetings of African-American “colored citizens”. A series of momentous decisions by the Supreme Court narrowed the rights guaranteed in the amendments, while the states actively undermined them. Today, there are serious political challenges to birthright citizenship, voting rights, due process, and equal protection of the law. Like all great works of history, this one informs our understanding of the present as well as the past.

Dreams of El Dorado : A History of the American West

by H. W. Brands

A Game of Birds and Wolves :

available now, hardcover, Basic Books

The Ingenious Young Women Whose Secret Board Game Helped Win World War II

Dreams of El Dorado tells the thrilling, panoramic story of the settling of the American West. Brands shows how the migrants' dreams drove them to feats of courage and perseverance and how those same dreams also drove them to outrageous acts of violence against indigenous peoples and one another. Balanced, authoritative, and masterfully told, Dreams of El Dorado sets a new standard for histories of the American West.

Between Two Fires : Truth, Ambition, and Compromise in Putin’s Russia

by Joshua Yaffa

by Simon Parkin

available in January, hardcover, Little, Brown and Company

Combining rich novelistic accounts with extensive research and interviews, Simon Parkin describes for the first time the role that women played in developing the Allied strategy which won World War II. Told with unforgettable cinematic detail and larger-than-life characters, A Game of Birds and Wolves is a heart-wrenching story of ingenuity, dedication and perseverance, bringing to life the incredible sacrifice required to defeat the Nazis at sea.

A Great Gift...

available in January, hardcover, Tim Duggan Books

In this tour of contemporary Russia, Joshua Yaffa introduces readers to some of the country’s most remarkable figures — from politicians and entrepreneurs to artists and historians — who have built their careers and constructed their identities in the shadow of the Putin system. Torn between their own ambitions and the omnipresent demands of the state, each walks their own path of compromise. What binds them together is the tangled web of dilemmas and contradictions they face.

The Last Whalers : Three Years in the Far Pacific with a Courageous Tribe and a Vanishing Way of Life

The National Team : The Inside Story of the Women Who Changed Soccer

by Doug Bock Clark

by Caitlin Murray

available now, paperback, Back Bay Books

available in November, paperback, Abrams Press

The Lamalerans: a tribe of 1,500 hunter-gatherers who are the world's last subsistence whalers. But now, under assault from the rapacious forces of the modern era and a global economy, their way of life teeters on the brink of collapse. Deeply empathetic and richly reported, The Last Whalers is a riveting, powerful chronicle of the collision between one of the planet's dwindling indigenous peoples and the irresistible enticements and upheavals of a rapidly transforming world.

The National Team tells the history of the USWNT in full, chronicling both their athletic triumphs and less visible challenges off the pitch. Through nearly 100 exclusive interviews with players, coaches, and team officials, Murray takes readers inside the locker rooms and board rooms in engrossing detail. The Witches Are Coming

POLITICS &

CURRENT

by Lindy West

available in November, hardcover, Hachette Books

From the moment powerful men started falling to the #MeToo movement, the lamentations began: this is feminism gone too far, this is injustice, this is a witch hunt. In The Witches Are Coming, a laugh-outloud, incisive cultural critique, Lindy West turns that refrain on its head. You think this is a witch hunt? Fine. You've got one.

EVENTS

We Are Indivisible : A Blueprint for Democracy Under Trump

by Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin available in November, hardcover, Atria

Here, the (still-married!) co-executive directors of Indivisible tell the story of the movement. They offer a behind-the-scenes look at how change comes to Washington, whether Washington wants it or not. And they explain how we’ll win the coming fight for the future of American democracy. We Are Indivisible isn’t a book of platitudes about hope; it’s a steely-eyed guide to people power — how to find it, how to build it, and how to use it to usher in the post-Trump era.

Gender and Sexual Diversity

Tightrope : Americans Reaching for Hope

by Nicholas D. Kristof, Sheryl WuDunn available in January, hardcover, Knopf

With stark poignancy and political dispassion, Tightrope draws us deep into stories of an “other America.” Taken together, these accounts provide a picture of working-class families needlessly but profoundly damaged as a result of decades of policy mistakes. With their superb, nuanced reportage, Kristof and WuDunn have given us a book that is both riveting and impossible to ignore.

Gender : A Graphic Guide

How Charts Lie :

available in January, paperback, Icon Books

Getting Smarter about Visual Information

by Meg-John Barker and Jules Scheele We’ll look at how gender has been ‘done’ differently — from patriarchal societies to trans communities — and how it has been viewed differently — from biological arguments for sex difference to cultural arguments about received gender norms. We’ll dive into complex and shifting ideas about masculinity and femininity, look at non-binary, trans and fluid genders, and examine the intersection of experiences of gender with people’s race, sexuality, class, disability and more.

Feminism: A Graphic Guide

We’ve all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words, but what if we don’t understand what we’re looking at? Good charts make us smarter — if we know how to read them. They can also lead us astray. In How Charts Lie, data visualization expert Alberto Cairo teaches us to not only spot the lies in deceptive visuals, but also to take advantage of good ones to understand complex stories.

Six Weeks to Zero Waste:

available in November, paperback, Icon Books

In this unique, illustrated introduction, explore the early history of conscious struggle against sexist oppression, through the modern “waves” of feminism, up to present-day conversations about #MeToo, intersectional feminism, and women’s rights in the Middle East. It also covers critical theory, popular action and the social and cultural forces that affect attitudes toward gender, women’s lives and the struggle for equality. As you'll see, feminism is at once global, local and individual.

by Holly George-Warren

available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster

Joplin was a tomboy who was also intellectually curious and artistic. By the time she reached high school, she had drawn the scorn of her peers for her embrace of the Beats and her racially progressive views. She was a Texan who yearned to flee Texas but could never quite get away — even after becoming a countercultural icon in San Francisco. Written by one of the most highly regarded chroniclers of American music history, and based on unprecedented access to Janis Joplin’s family, friends, band mates, archives, and long-lost interviews, Janis is a complex, rewarding portrait.

Becoming Eve : My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman

A Memoir

by Abby Chava Stein

by Calvin Hennick

available in November, hardcover, Seal Press

available in December, paperback, Pushcart Press

Abby Stein was raised in a Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, born as the first son in a dynastic rabbinical family, poised to become a leader of the next generation of Hasidic Jews. But Abby felt certain at a young age that she was a girl. Powerful in the truths it reveals about biology, culture, faith, and identity, Becoming Eve poses the enduring question: How far will you go to become the person you were meant to be?

Five years into fatherhood, Calvin Hennick is plagued by self-doubt and full of questions. How can he teach his son to be a man, when his own father figures abandoned him? As a white man, what can he possibly teach his biracial son about how to live as a black man in America? In search of answers, Calvin takes his young son on the road, traveling across the country to arrive at the annual rodeo in his small Iowa hometown. In this unforgettable debut memoir, Calvin Hennick holds a mirror up to both himself and modern America, in an urgent and timely story.

Bowie’s Bookshelf : The Hundred Books that Changed David Bowie’s Life by John O'Connell

available in November, hardcover, Gallery Books

Three years before David Bowie died, he shared a list of 100 books that changed his life. His choices span fiction and nonfiction, literary and irreverent, and include timeless classics alongside eyebrow-raising obscurities. How did the power imbued in a single suit of armor in The Iliad impact a man who loved costumes, shifting identity, and the siren song of the alter-ego? How did The Gnostic Gospels inform Bowie’s own hazy personal cosmology? In 100 short essays, music journalist John O’Connell studies each book on Bowie’s list and contextualizes it in the artist’s life and work.

Personal Journeys Little Weirds by Jenny Slate

available in November, hardcover, Little Brown and Co.

This is a beautiful, soul-baring punch in the gut. Slate’s writing is just as often poetic as profound, like in the flash fiction-esque vignettes where she imagines surreal scenarios of her own death. She writes less with assurance than with insight and tenderness, but the writing is no less a force for that decision. Little Weirds has been the biggest surprise of the year, and I can’t wait for everyone to read it. –Stephanie

Wizards, Aliens, and Starships : Physics and Math in by Charles Adler

Letters from an Astrophysicist

available in November, hardcover, Princeton University Press

available now, hardcover, W.W. Norton

Fantasy and Science Fiction

by Neil DeGrasse Tyson

From space elevators to interstellar travel, science fiction and fantasy writers have come up with some brilliant, innovative ideas. Yet how plausible are these ideas? Which concepts might happen, and which ones wouldn’t work? From the works of Ursula K. Le Guin to Star Trek and Avatar, this book delves into the most extraordinary details in science fiction and fantasy — such as time warps, shape changing, and rocket launches — and shows readers the physics and math behind the phenomena.

In this hand-picked collection of 101 letters, Tyson draws upon cosmic perspectives to address a vast array of questions about science, faith, philosophy, life, and of course, Pluto. His succinct, opinionated, passionate, and often funny responses reflect his popularity and standing as a leading educator. With Tyson’s most candid and heartfelt writing yet, Letters from an Astrophysicist introduces us to a newly personal dimension of Tyson’s quest to explore our place in the cosmos.

by Moorea Seal

Why We Can't Sleep : Women's New Midlife Crisis by Ada Calhoun

available in January, hardcover, Grove Press

Are you a Generation X woman? I am. Sandwiched between Boomers and Millenials, most of us are in our '40s and staring down the barrel of 50. Sure, it happens to everyone but remember, we were the first women who were expected to truly "have it all" and now that effort is backfiring on countless women in the form of debt, strains on relationships, and spreading ourselves way too thin. Calhoun peppers her troubling research with great references to the '70s, '80s, and '90s, that only we can best appreciate. –Claire

From the author of Brain on Fire comes this propulsive narrative history investigating the 50-year-old mystery behind a dramatic experiment that changed the course of modern medicine.

Spirituality One Long River of Song : Notes on Wonder for the Spiritual and Nonspiritual Alike

by Brian Doyle

available now, hardcover, Sasquatch Books

available in December, hardcover, Little, Brown and Company

Develop peace of mind through the calming practice of list-making. Create 52 lists, one for each week of the year, in this lovely undated hardback journal, and along the way, develop a personalized tool kit at the back of the book as a quick reference with strategies to turn to for relief. Includes 52 listing prompts divided into 4 sections: Be Present, Look Back, Move Forward, and Release, plus strategies for mindfulness and relaxation.

A playful, deeply moving book of spiritual essays by beloved writer Brian Doyle. At a time when our world feels darker than ever, Doyle's essays are a balm for the tired soul. He finds beauty in the quotidian: the awe of a child the first time she hears a river, the whiskers a grieving widow misses seeing in her sink every day — but through his eyes, nothing is ordinary.

Brian Grazer's insatiable curiosity and determination to connect with and learn from the world around him, has lead him to some extraordinary experiences, which he shares in this book. Religious Lit Rescuing the Sacred Texts

The Reading Life : The Joy of Seeing New Worlds Through Others' Eyes

available in November, hardcover, Knopf

available now, hardcover, HarperOne

The sacred texts have been co-opted by those who interpret Scripture to bolster their own prejudices. But as Armstrong shows in this chronicle of the development of major religions, such a narrow reading of Scripture is a relatively recent phenomenon. Historically, the world’s religious traditions have regarded these texts as tools that enable the individual to experience a different level of consciousness and help engage with the world in more meaningful and compassionate ways.

The revered teacher and bestselling author of such classic Christian works as Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters reflects on the power, importance, and joy of a life dedicated to reading books in this delightful collection drawn from his wide body of writings. A window into the thoughts of one of the greatest public intellectuals of our time, this collection reveals not only why Lewis loved the written word, but what it means to learn through literature from one of our wisest and most enduring teachers.

Different could be hair. Different could be eyes. Different could be faces. Different could be you or me.

The Opposite of Peace by Bryn Bergman, age 13 Whatcom Middle School

Imagine ashes instead of snow Picture fires instead of rain Think of bones and blood and bags of trash floating through the wind.

And know That every palm Holds their own Great estuary.

Bring to mind empty rooms and broken walls, Roofs that have fallen in. Vacant streets and lonely buildings, Homes that have long been forgotten.

One finger Climbing through another Flowing together Intertwined

Products of war. Results of dividedness. A future we caused. Unless…

Linked across the world Love flowing From each palm To each heart These hands, Divergent in color, Divergent in love, Divergent in life, Saying just because A hand is different Doesn’t mean You can’t hold it.

Everyone experiences conflict. The Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center is your community resource for conflict resolution.

Sunnyland Elementary

Imagine waves of water instead of garbage Picture trees instead of skyscrapers Think of people walking, smiling, living, Dancing in the wind. Bring to mind crowded rooms and windows, Roofs with happy people beneath them. Busy streets and buildings filled with workers, Homes that make room for everyone. Isn’t that the future we want? Isn’t that peace? Village Books and Paper Dreams is proud to sponsor the 2019 Peaceful Poetry Youth Contest.

She’s even exploring her family’s history — which happens to be loaded with betrayals, superstitions and possibly even a family curse. You know, typical drama. But it's nothing she can't handle.

DECEMBER Sunday, December 1, 4pm DEBORAH NEDELMAN –What We Take For Truth What We Take for Truth is the story of a young woman who finds her strength when the world around her crumbles. At its height, the world of logging in the Pacific Northwest was both brutal and beautiful. When the conservation movement sent protestors into the woods and the government began to place the needs of a small, shy bird above those of families who had lived for generations off the harvest of those woods, the conflicts that erupted were fierce and heartbreaking. What We Take for Truth tells a story that both defends a way of life that is dying and celebrates a landscape that is being lost. DONALDSON –Trouble in Mind Neil Rivers has no past — only a blank slate forged in the burning chaos of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and a secret hidden in the hills of Oahu. Full of atmospheric writing, explosive drama, and ethical quandaries, Trouble in Mind weaves a gripping tale of a man struggling to create a new identity from a stolen one. What more appropriate day to present this book than on the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor? Local author Jamie K. Donaldson is a peace and social justice activist and avid bird watcher. Dean Donaldson enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving for a time in Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Wichita. He obtained a master’s degree in English literature and creative writing at the University of Washington. He was a prolific writer of novels, short stories, poems, and plays. He died in 2007.

Steven Greenebaum’s spiritual journey, One Family: Indivisible, looks at all of these divisions, particularly addressing how we might come together to celebrate and respect our spiritual diversity rather than fear it. Founder of the Living Interfaith Church, Reverend Steven Greenebaum (The Interfaith Alternative and Practical Interfaith) holds Masters Degrees in Mythology, Music, and Pastoral Studies. MARGARETHE ZUBLER-KELLER –Scarlett and Dilcey We all know Scarlett, but who is Dilcey and why does she share the title of Margarethe Zubler-Keller’s definitive sequel to Gone with the Wind? Scarlett and Dilcey continues where Mitchell left off with a book that takes us from Georgia to Canada to Europe, Panama, and finally comes to rest in San Francisco. Along with Dr. Michael Copass, they started Medic One, an emergency service unlike any other. One year later, the first vehicle equipped with a defibrillator and ten highly trained Seattle firefighters took to the streets. Medic One has since trained hundreds of paramedics, added an emergency air transport service in four neighboring states, helped build a statewide emergency transfer system and saved countless lives. Dr. Richard Rapport delivers an inside look at one of the most influential medical programs in Washington State and the country. Dr. Rapport is an attending physician at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where among other duties he is the co-site director for the UW medical students’ neurosurgical elective course.

“At the heart of democracy lies the ballot box, and Elaine Weiss’s unforgettable book tells the story of the female leaders who — in the face of towering economic, racial, and political opposition — fought for and won American women’s right to vote. Unfolding over six weeks in the summer of 1920, The Woman’s Hour is both a page-turning drama and an inspiration for everyone, young and old, male and female, in these perilous times. So much could have gone wrong, but these American women would not take no for an answer: their triumph is our legacy to guard and emulate.” —Hillary Rodham Clinton.
