Jim’s wardrobe provided by Milano Men’s Clothing Spring is finally here! If you're like us, you're excited to get out and start taking part in all of the events that the nice weather brings. As you flip through this issue of Village Connection Magazine, one thing you may notice is the number of things that we have to look forward to in the upcoming months. We've got The Townwide Fund Golf Outing, The Long Island Hospitality Ball, The Just Like Me Project, Naval Expo Wellness Walk, The 2nd Annual Huntington Hoe-Down, Outing and Huntington Boating Safety Week. We're also looking forward to hosting Mariel Hemingway and Bobby Williams this month as they promote their new book on April 24 at Honu. Next month is our 2nd Annual Swimsuit issue and we're planning a cover party for that as well. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that we are very involved in this community and we get to have fun at the same time. If you don't believe me, why don't you join us at some of these events and find out for yourself. Get your calendar out while you read this issue, and save the date for your favorites. In the meantime, I'll see you in the Village...

The Mod Squad What’s the hottest fashion trend for Spring? A fun and funky blast from the past…Mod! The hands of time were turning back to the 60s all over the runway as designers showed bold graphics and retro shapes for the coming season. Mod easily goes hand in hand with the cool vibe and bright prints and colors that signify the Spring. In the 60s no one epitomized the look more that the famous English model Twiggy. A unique beauty for the times, she embodied the trend and was rarely seen without her trademark mini skirts and shift dresses. As Mod grew, many fashion designers emerged, such as Sally Tuffin and Mary Quant, who was known for her short miniskirt designs and was a strong force in making the look so popular.

8 • village connection • april 2013

Louis Vuitton’s Spring ad campaign is totally Mod and designers such as Dior, Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Kors are all sporting the look with playful stripes, polka dots, geometrics and checkerboard prints. Classic Mod accessories such as wide belts, bright sunnies, and even the iconic Kelley bag in blocks of black and white all put an updated spin on the Mod look. So to add some whimsy to your wardrobe this season, adopt a colorful pump, a striped satchel bag, even a headband. Of course you can go all the way bold with a bright printed dress, jacket or oversized sun glasses (a la Jackie O) even blue eyeliner is back! There is a fun carefree feel to this look, that makes it perfect for the warmer months ahead!

The ‘Art of Nature’ T

he first signs of Spring are beginning to show in Huntington. Buds are ready to bloom into vivid flora, bright greens and fresh tree bark foreshadow the brilliant color palette of Spring’s latest styles that can been seen in store windows up and down Main Street. Recently, B.J. Spoke Gallery in Huntington Village, participated in this month’s cover photo shoot. The gallery is an artist-run incorporated not-for-profit organization with a variety of styles and exquisite medias. Featured at the gallery is artist, Kevin Larkin and his work. His pieces, seen in the photos, “Manhattan Jazz” and “Restring” provided the perfect background scene for each of the photos to highlight the new Spring collections and trends around town. At Spa Adriana, Huntington’s own award-winning Aveda lifestyle salon and spa, the must-have beauty trend is Aveda’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, Art of Nature. The Art of Nature is a complete makeup collection that combines the elements of nature and takes you on a dreamy, romantic adventure. From rose-petal eyes to flushed cheeks to soft, dewy lips, this Spring is the time to play with shades and textures found in nature.

As seen on our model Samantha (who is also part of the Spa Adriana Style Team) the natural beauty of long cascading curls offer a softer, elegant Spring look. Hair color is a Sophisticated Ombra done as a Color Melting technique. This technique is much better at blending the color from natural tones to the beachy ends to fully capture the warmth of Spring. The primary colors and vibrant spring pastels in Kevin’s piece “Manhattan Jazz” are a wonderful contrast for Samantha in the solid tones of the fashion. Yellow is the must-have color this spring. As seen here, this sun kissed yellow Rag and Bone tuxedo jacket paired with an

eggshell lazar cut tank by Rag and Bone, along side a blushed Rose JBrand pant is the perfect outfit for work or play. Finishing up the look is a lemon studded Valentino clutch and an 18k yellow gold necklace featuring labradoriate and peridot and a touch of rose-colored beads. In this image, we chose Kevin’s painting “Restring” for the background. The combination of block panels of elemental gold and primary red set off the midnight cobalt blue while contrasting the gold lace of the fabric. Start your day in this short sleeve lace midnight blue Derek Lam dress with an Ostrich Michael Kors clutch. (photo left)

Clean Water Changes Lives

April is Earth Month at Spa Adriana. In partnership with botanical beauty brand, Aveda, we are committed to helping raise $5 million for clean water. Spa Adriana is stepping up to support the effort on April 22 along with thousands of other Aveda spa and salons nationwide. At Spa Adriana, we are continually striving to set an example of environmental leadership and responsibility. For over 25 years we have committed ourselves to the organic trend in hair- and skincare. To help the cause, we are donating 100% of our profits from Hair Cut Services on Monday, April 22, 2013. Funds raised by Spa Adriana will benefit Clean Ocean Action– a local charity that advocates for the health of waterways in the New York and New Jersey area. It is a simple and beautiful way for our guests to actively care for the environment. Since Aveda started this campaign in 1999, professionals in more than 30 countries have collectively raised more than $26 million for in support of Earth Month. Beginning in 2007, Aveda has donated

18 • village connection • april 2013

Earth Month proceeds to organizations working to combat the clean water crisis – to date more than $20 million have been directed to support hundreds of clean water projects on six continents. Through our work, not only with Aveda, but also with Ceviche Tours and the promotion of sustainable eco-tourism, we believe that good business is responsible business. It is so gratifying to participate in programs like these that allow us to participate in initiatives that directly benefit our local community and world. In addition to raising money for clean water, Spa Adriana along with Aveda salons nationwide will jointly attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most money raised for a charity by haircuts in a 24-hour period. To help out, call 631.351.1555 or visit www.spaadriana.com and book your appointment for the Earth today or visit www.aveda.com for more information. A New Look at Wedding Ceremony Programs

Of all the many things that Couples can do to make their Wedding day distinctive, a Wedding Ceremony Program is a truly unique and classy way to acknowledge your guests and to provide memories of your special day. In the traditional type of Wedding Ceremony Program you typically indicate a plan or agenda for the ceremony. Included are the names of the Parents of both the Bride and Groom; the Maid of Honor and Best Man as well as the rest of the Wedding Party; and the name of your Officiant. The Contemporary Ceremony Program often includes a short poem, a reading, or perhaps your personally customized vows, but this variety of Program generally does not include the order of your ceremony. Your family and friends grace your wedding with their presence because of the love, respect and consideration that they hold for you. Including a “Thank You” is an important part of the Program. Two or three sentences are all that is needed to offer an elegant and gracious sentiment. An example you may

use: “As this day is very special for us, it is made even more special because you, whom we love, are here to share it with us. So, this evening, as you witness our vows, we thank you for giving us the blessing of your love, and in so doing help to strengthen our union.” It is most respectful to include a section noting those who have passed on. Simply write “In Memoriam” and then list those whom you wish to acknowledge. At times, the relation to the Bride or Groom is also indicated. Adding a phrase such as “Present in Our Hearts Today and Always” or “Forever in Our Minds & Thoughts” is also appropriate and appreciated. Creating a Wedding Ceremony Program is a wonderful way to acknowledge your appreciation of your guests as they are attending one of the most important events of your life! They are a lovely memento of your wedding day and are easy to create as well as produce, whether you do it yourself using specialty paper or have them professional produced.

Enjoy the process of getting married! 24 • village connection • april 2013

Chocolate Cake Cake by Michael Mignano

An Israeli study presents encouraging findings for cake and chocolate lovers: A sweet dish at breakfast time may actually help weight loss diets. In the morning, when the body’s metabolic rate is faster, measured consumption of sweets can reduce appetite for sweets during the rest of the day. The researchers, led by Prof. Daniela Jakubowicz of the Wolfson Medical Center in Israel, determined that adding carbohydrates to breakfast helps the body to deal with the weight loss and improves the effectiveness of weight loss diets over time. “In order to achieve long-term weight loss, when determining meal times and their content, one should take into account the compensatory mechanisms that encourage weight gain after a diet,” the researchers concluded. Not sure I’m ready for cake and eggs, but I am intrigued by the idea of starting my day with chocolate brioche and a strong cup of coffee. With this new study I no longer have to put part of my main course in a doggie bag to save room for my chocolate cake. Now the dessert can be taken to go. Chocolate cake is a dreamy dessert. Done right, it can take your mind off what’s troubling you and flood your senses with pure delight. The economy is shaky, gas prices are climbing… and chocolate cake is my diversion therapy. Chocolate cake has many personalities: layered, fudgy, airy, dense, sinfully rich, bittersweet, molten lava, and my favorite, flourless. How about icing? I want to take mine all the way: layered, dense, and enrobed in ganache. Add shaved chocolate curls on top and I’m in heaven

Awesome Abdominals Everyone I work with at my fitness bootcamp studio wants a flat abdomen. Having lean strong abdominal muscles has many benefits beyond just looking great. Strong abdominal muscles with little fat tissue around them have the following benefits: 1. They look great and your clothes fit better 2. Decreased abdominal fat has been shown to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease 3. Strong abdominals give support to the spine and may help to decrease back pain 4. Strong abdominals may help reduce the risk of back injuries 5. Strong abdominals give your trunk support and allows your limbs to work better because they have a more stable “base”: for example becoming a faster runner or improving in your sport because your arms and legs work off of your trunk. So how are you going to get strong abdominals? Increasing the strength of your abs is achieved by doing abdominal and core (exercises that challenge your abs and back muscle) exercises. Decreasing body fat here is more difficult and is better achieved when you perform exercises along with eating lean proteins and foods in their purest form such as vegetables, fruits, nuts and lean meats. Below are some awesome abdominal exercises that you can do anywhere anytime without any equipment needed. 1. Plank: on your hands and toes as if youre in a push up position or you can be on your forearms. Hold it for as long as you can. The more you consciously squeeze your abs the longer you will be able to hold it. Keep your back flat because if you are arching it then you are not working your abdominals. 2. Bicycle Abs: lye on your back with your hands behind your head and squeeze your abs tightly trying to keep the back as flat into the ground as possible, crunch your abs and lift your shoulder blades off of the ground while rotating your torso and bringing your opposite knee to your chest. Repeat on the other side. Never let your feet or shoulder blades touch the ground. 3. Alternating Leg Lowers: lye on your back and lift your legs to the ceiling. With your hands behind your head squeeze your abs raising your shoulder blades off of the ground while lowering one leg as close to the ground as possible but not touching the ground. Slowly lower your trunk back towards the ground as your leg returns to the up position. Repeat on the other leg. You can crunch straight up and down and/or rotate your trunk to the leg that is lifted. Never let your shoulder blades fully touch the ground. If you perform 10-30 of each exercise (depending on your fitness level) and repeat 3-5 times you will have a nice abdominal workout that will increase strength. You may also Follow it up with a nice balanced meal of healthy carbohydrates like vegetables and fruits and lean proteins like chicken or beans.

Anti-Biotics vs. Pro-Biotics

The Good Guys vs. The Bad Guys - Sound familiar? We see this conflict in movies and read it in books; and if you are like me, I always want the good guys to win. Well in case you didn't know, the same conflict is going on inside your intestines with bacteria. The bad bacteria can challenge the good bacteria. And actually, the stakes are higher than most people realize. The bad bacteria are harmful bacteria that can cause health problems ranging from mild to severe. Bad bacteria compete with the good bacteria for living space and food. These bad guys aren't fooling around. They generally win if their numbers are large. They may also release toxic sub-stances. This may cause many of the good or healthy bacteria to die off. Here are some of the factors that cause the growth of bad bacteria: stress causes a change in the pH of the bowel, causing the healthy bacteria to stagnate; low fiber will starve out the healthy bacteria; a sugar-laden diet, feeds the "bad" bacteria; high trans-fats or hydrogenated oils have a negative effect on bile in the gall bladder stimulating an environment for the growth of bad bacteria. We need healthy bile flow to create the proper pH necessary to proliferate good bacteria. Another factor is antibiotics. Whether we take the pills or if we consume commercially prepared antibiotic tainted chicken, beef or pork, we're getting the side effects of antibiotics. Eating too fast can cause the growth of bad bacteria. If we eat too fast we're not digesting our food properly and our enzymes are not killing the bacteria that are naturally present in our food.

32 • village connection • april 2013

So if you think about it, most people have one or more of these factors. That's why digestion problems are one of the most common health problems today. And if the bad bacteria persist, you are at a greater risk for disease. The more research accumulates, the more we
find that intestinal dysfunction is a contributing factor to just about
every condition. A
huge part of fixing the
GI tract is balancing the micro-flora. In other words, we need the "good guys" or healthy bacteria to come to the rescue. We need a supplement of healthy bacteria called a probiotic. One capsule of a good probiotic contains billions of healthy "Good guys" to come to your rescue. Healthy probiotics have been shown to: improve digestive function, modulate the gut immune system up or down, increase the growth of aerobic bacteria, decrease bad or unfriendly bacteria, reduce leaky gut, improve liver function and support a healthy gastro-intestinal mucosal lining. If the good bacteria win, there are many benefits for your overall health. I recommend a probiotic that is combined with a prebiotic. A prebiotic is valuable to make sure that the healthy bacteria can grow, kind of like putting starter fertilizer on new grass. Once healthy bacteria are replaced, you can stop supplementation. However, several times a year, it is recommended that you go on a periodic "re-seeding" with the healthy bacteria. The goal is to keep a high ratio of good bacteria in your bowel. Probiotics have been successful in not only the treatment of existing health issues but in prevention as well.

Native Spring Wildflowers Non-Native Bleeding Heart; Center:Shooting Star If you’re ever hiking in the forests or woodlands of the northeast in the springtime, you can observe some outstanding native plants that make an appearance for a relatively short period of time. Some of them include trilliums, shooting star, native columbine, mayapple, Virginia bluebells, bloodroot and Jack- in- the -Pulpit. These are just a few of the special native wildflowers that we can look forward to see popping up each year as spring emerges. They are known as spring ephemerals and they show up as spring emerges with the promise of warmer days ahead. Most of them will become dormant by the time the hotter weather arrives. There are a few that maintain above the ground growth through the summer including, Jack-In-The –Pulpit, hepatica, Rue Anemone, Wild Ginger and some trilliums. Most of the others will flower quickly then go to seed and die back to their underground parts again by June. When they are combined in a natural woodland setting, they can create a magical effect as they begin to bloom. It is worth taking a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway of Virginia and North Carolina in April and May just to observe the trillium’s bursting forth with color. Claytonia, Toothwort, Solomon Seal, Trout Lily, Dutchman’s Breeches and Squirrel Corn, can all be found growing off the beaten trails of the northeast and south central United States, coexisting among native ferns and shrubs. They prefer a moist, cool environment in woodlands below tall pines, oaks and maples. Bunchberry, which is a relative to the native dogwood tree, is the only species of the Cornus (Dogwood) family that is an herbaceous perennial rather than a tree or shrub. It requires a moist, peaty soil and is mostly found in northern mountainous regions of New England and Canada. Although bunchberry can be difficult to get established in this area and is relatively short lived, it will not

36 • village connection • april 2013

disappoint those who are lucky enough to enjoy it in their garden. The white or pinkish flowers, which are actually bracts, are very showy, and as an added bonus it produces beautiful red berries in the fall while the leaves turn a wine red color. Native columbine is a more reliable performer and beautiful when in bloom. I have a shady area in my yard where I have grown mayapple, bloodroot, shooting star and native columbine reliably for many years. I tried growing bunchberry and birds foot violet with some success but after several years they disappeared. One of my favorites, Virginia Bluebells, produces vibrant baby blue color bells in the spring that blends well with daffodils, tulips and other spring bloomers. The Old Fashioned Bleeding Heart is a spring ephemeral but it is not native to the United States. There is however a native Bleeding Heart (Dicentra eximia), which will remain throughout the summer and even bloom on occasion into early fall. All these plants have a short opportunity to grow, flower, be pollinated and produce seeds and since they are indigenous to Long Island, they are definitely worth finding a home for in your garden. Many of these plants are not so easy to purchase anymore so you may want to try a reputable nursery to confirm that they have been propagated and not harvested from the wild. In areas where they are endangered or protected it is prohibited to remove them from their natural habitat. Some species have been lost over the years to suburban development, farming, poaching and overcome by the introduction of invasive plants. If you have a woodland or shady area then you might want to consider trying them out. Once they become established in your garden there is not much maintenance involved. Combine them with some native ferns and shrubs to bring a natural beauty to your landscape for years to come.

Dividend Growth Investing It’s hard to believe that for the past 50 years Coca Cola has been paying cash dividends to its shareholders (you read that right…“50 years”) and if that’s not amazing enough - get this - it has increased those cash dividends each and every of those 50 years even during recessions. McDonald’s has done this same thing for the past 36 years, 3M Company for 54 years, Johnson & Johnson for 50 years and Chevron for 25 years - to name just a few well-known companies that are committed to consistently paying and raising cash dividends. This phenomenon has not gone unnoticed by the investment community who devised an investing strategy called Dividend Growth Investing which has come into some prominence during this prolonged period of low interest rates. The concept is simple. Think of planting a seed and watching it grow. Let’s say your research reveals that XYZ is a healthy company, has good future prospects, is fairly valued, has been increasing its dividends for the past 25 years and you like current annual dividend yield of 4.0 % so you buy $10,000 worth of XYZ shares. The 4% dividend yield would generate $400 of cash during the first year. You then continue to hold the shares while dividends are increased as predicted by 10%

each year. After 5 years your dividend yield versus your original $10,000 cost would become 5.9% and after10 years it would grow to 9.40%. Not bad? If your research was correct then not only would dividends increase over the years but so would XYZ’s stock price – which would have the effect of lowering the dividend yield available to new investors. Put another way – if after 25 consecutive years of steady increases, XYZ’s dividend yield versus its current share price is only 4% and not some huge percentage, it shows that share prices climbed along with the dividends. Most stock investors look primarily to rising share prices for profits – you know the ever challenging “buy low, sell high” – but dividend growth investors seek to buy and hold stocks of quality dividend growth companies in order to benefit from an ever increasing flow of cash – understanding that a trickle today will become a torrent tomorrow.

On the television cooking channels, in national magazines and newspapers, in books as well as through various other venues, ‘tis the season to be inundated with recipe after recipe for an array of outdoor grilling recipes usually delivered by famous chefs and authors. By following their expert guidance, our satisfaction is assured. Just as these experts in the culinary arts offer food themes, beautiful presentations of prepared dishes and step-by-step cooking instructions easily put-together for the outdoor cooking enthusiasts, I will offer my recipe for a versatile, kitchen environment that can be enjoyed steps away from your back door. For your outdoor kitchen, you can start with a level area that measures as little as 100 – 400 sq. ft. Select a shape, color and texture of interlocking concrete pavers to your taste for the pavement and refer to proper installation methods. INGREDIENTS: 100-400 sq. ft.paving stones 40-80 lin. ft. (Approx.) color coordinated paving stones as a border (optional) 1 fully assembled, L-shaped outdoor kitchen (or grill island) 1 fully assembled outdoor pizza oven 1 pre-packaged bar module kit (optional)

40 • village connection • april 2013

1 pre-packaged pub & bistro table kit (optional) 1 pre-packaged pergola kit (optional) Arrange all of the ingredients keeping in mind that food prep, cooking and dining can be achieved within close proximity to each other so hosts and guests can intermingle. With a fully functional outdoor kitchen, an almost limitless variety of meats and vegetables can be adeptly cooked from a single device. Choose to add an Outdoor Pizza Oven and you can professionally cook an authentic Neapolitan-style pizza, bake breads and roast vegetables all year long. A Pre-packaged Bar Module Kit assembled nearby gives you amenities like a sink and bar caddy in addition to another refrigerator for beverages. Incorporate a 48” x 48” square or 60” round Pre-packaged Patio Pub & Bistro Table Kit in your outdoor space and the only ingredients left to bring to the recipe are generous portions of guests. Just as seen on television and in magazines, presentation is important too. Because all of the components mentioned in my foolproof recipe are based on hardscape materials, you can create your very own aesthetically pleasing flavors by choosing colors and textures that will blend together naturally. Place some or all of the ingredients under an open-sided pergola or pavilion without fuss of hiring a designer.

the Safe Way As the weather warms, American families are turning their attention to in-home spring cleaning as well as outdoor projects and play. Whether household chores and cleaning, do-it-yourself tasks or playground games, these common spring activities are often associated with a number of serious home dangers including falls, poisonings, fires/burns and drowning hazards. * The Home Safety Council urges families to keep safe practices that help prevent falls, poisonings, fires/burns and drowning top of mind while cleaning up and cleaning out your home, garage and yard. * When cleaning out closets or re-organizing, reduce the risk of falls by keeping stairs, steps, landings and all floors clear of clutter. * Carry loads you can see over, and keep one hand free to hold banisters and railings. * Remember to reduce clutter and safely tuck away telephone and electrical cords out of walkways. In homes with children, make sure toys and other items are always safely put away when not in use. * If you need to climb, use a stepladder or safety ladder. When using a ladder, stand at or below the highest safe standing level. For a stepladder, the safe standing level is the second rung from the top, and for an extension ladder, it is the fourth rung from the top. Before using, make sure the rungs are dry and the ladder is securely positioned on a flat surface.

* When cleaning out cabinets, read all product and medications labels carefully and separate those that say "Caution," "Warning" or "Danger" on them. To prevent poison exposures, lock these up out of sight and reach of young children. * Follow safety recommendations when using harsh products, such as wearing gloves and masks. Do not mix products together because their contents could react with dangerous results. * Never use gasoline as a cleaning solvent and never use or store gasoline in your home, even in tiny quantities. Because its vapors can readily ignite, gasoline can present a serious fire home hazard and is too dangerous to use for any purpose other than as a motor fuel. * Large buckets are often used while cleaning and present a serious drowning danger to young children. Never leave a bucket or any standing water unattended and store all buckets and barrels empty and upside-down.

An Escape From Fame

From the spring of 1958 to the summer of 1964, a tall, slightly disheveled man often shuffled along Northport’s Main Street in well-worn red slippers. He was revered by some as the Leader of the Beat Generation and disdained by others as a dissolute drunk. Jack Kerouac had come to Northport to escape the celebrity he had attained when On The Road was published in 1957. In his search for a place of refuge, Kerouac visited a number of towns on Long Island. He chose to settle in Northport because he felt at home in the Village. In his own words: I went all the way to the Hamptons. I went down to Freeport, it’s a sideshow. You come up here…the little mountains, the little hills, there’s nothing here but trees and ghosts, this is a real village. The house he bought for $14,000 on Gilbert Street seemed a perfect retreat. The house had a large back porch facing a yard that bordered the athletic fields of the (then) Northport High School. Kerouac thought that rocking on the porch contemplating the large pine in the yard would prove to be conducive to the meditation and planning he needed to pursue his writing. Unfortunately, the high school and college students who admired his work flocked to the house in hopes of seeing him. In the six years that he lived in the Village, Kerouac lived in three houses. He chose his last house on Judy Ann Court because he felt the surrounding trees and the six-foot cedar fence would finally provide the privacy he sought. Kerouac did find companionship and a place to relax in

46 • village connection • april 2013

Northport. He became close friends with Stanley Twardowicz and Larry Smith. Twardowicz’s art studio on Main Street became one of his favorite haunts. He was also a regular at the local bars. He would appear with a roll of nickels at Gunther’s Tap Room and spend the late afternoon and evening sipping beer at fifteen cents a glass. After leaving Gunther’s, Kerouac would stroll to Twadowicz’s studio or stumble home in his tattered slippers. On Sundays, he would join Twardowicz and Smith in pickup softball games at Ocean Avenue School before wandering down to Gunther’s. As divergent as the opinions on Kerouac were in the Village, an incident one afternoon in 1964 confirmed them both. Neal Cassady drove down Main Street in his famous wildly colored, “psychedelic” bus. Leaving the bus with the engine running in the parking lot across from Gunther’s, Cassady proceeded to haul Kerouac off to party in Manhattan with Ken Kesey, Alan Ginsberg, and others of The Merry Pranksters. Kerouac was offended by some of the group and stormed out of the party to return to his refuge on Judy Ann Court. In August of that year, Kerouac left the Village and moved to Floridawith his mother so they could be close to his ailing sister. Although he never returned to Northport before he died in 1969, Kerouac is still remembered with an annual softball game, and his picture stares out at Main Street through a front window of Gunther’s.

When it comes to drug addiction, we all lose! The overall safety of our communities is at risk. Families suffer. Our social welfare, school, law enforcement and healthcare systems are overburdened.

46% of all high school students currently use addictive substances; 1 in 3 of them meets the medical criteria for addiction. Startling Statistics: •The fastest growing drug of abuse in American high schools is heroin. •Drug related deaths claim a life every 14 minutes, now outnumbering traffic fatalities in the United States. •There are now more first-time adolescent prescription drug abusers than first-time marijuana users. •An estimated 1.8 million youth age twelve and older are current users of cocaine. Jaguar The Future of Jaguar Sports Cars

The new Jaguar F-TYPE represents a return to the company’s heart: a two-seat, convertible sports car focused on performance, agility and driver involvement. The F-TYPE is a continuation of a sporting bloodline that stretches back more than 75 years and encompasses some of the most beautiful, thrilling and desirable sports cars ever built. Joining the XK convertible and coupe models, the new F-TYPE provides Jaguar with a broader line of sports and GT models. A true two-seat sports car, the all-new Jaguar F-TYPE is equipped with a modern, lightweight soft top that, when lowered, serves as its own tonneau cover. This not only provides a weight savings, but also improves packaging and contributes to the car’s low center of gravity for greater agility. The top can be fully raised or lowered in just 12 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph. Its multi-layer construction includes a Thinsulate® lining for optimal thermal and sound-insulating properties. PERFORMANCE The F-TYPE showcases the new supercharged Jaguar engines, a 3-liter supercharged V6 in 340hp and 380hp states of tune and the 5-liter supercharged V8 in the F-TYPE V8 S with 495hp and 460 ft-lbs of torque. In addition to rapid zero-to-60 acceleration in 5.1 seconds, the new Jaguar supercharged engines give the F-TYPE outstanding merging and passing performance. The 340hp V6 model will go from 50 to 75 mph in just 3.3 seconds; the 380hp S version in 3.1 and the V8 S model in 2.5 seconds.

DESIGN The Jaguar F-TYPE introduces a new sports car design language with bold, clean lines - from hidden door handles and a forward leaning grille, to exhaust finishers that are stamped from a single piece of stainless steel. The Jaguar F-TYPE instrument panel allows the driver naturally placed and logical controls to allow maximum attention to the driving experience. Performance seats can also be ordered with additional side bolstering for greater support during high-force cornering. Jaguar Huntington provides a selection of all the new Jaguar models. The F-TYPE is scheduled to arrive this summer. Their experienced sales staff is dedicated to satisfying customers’ needs. They encourage you to take time to visit their showroom to see the large selection of Jaguar models, or visit www.jaguarhuntington. com to see the latest Jaguar has to offer, request more information, set up a test-drive or inquire about financing. Purchasing a Jaguar at Jaguar Huntington doesn’t end there. Whether changing your oil or replacing your brakes, Jaguar Huntington always maintains the highest standards for delivering the best service every time. Their service staff will make every effort to schedule their customer’s vehicle as soon as possible. Jaguar Huntington is open Monday through Friday, 9am – 8pm and Saturday 9am – 6pm. Located at 1249 East Jericho Turnpike in the heart of Huntington’s Auto Mile, Jaguar Huntington is a favorite for those who seek the ultimate in luxury cars. History, Hauntings and Happenings

The Village Connection has always been something I look forward to reading. Being a Huntington resident for twenty-two years, I love flipping through its glossy pages which are jam packed with wonderful articles about local people, places and food. So when I met up with Jeanne Murphy and Jim Savalli a few weeks ago at a fundraising event for CureMS Foundation, and they asked me if I wanted to write a column, I couldn’t help but say yes. I have to admit, my only hesitation at first was time. Could I fit one more thing into my life? For those of you who may not know me, I’m an author, photographer, historian, radio show host, blogger, mother of two and a ghost investigator. Yes, you heard that right. I am a ghost investigator. Not your average career, but I have to admit, it’s a blast. If I may add, it’s nothing like what you see on TV. I work with paranormal investigator and clairaudient medium Joe Giaquinto, and everything we do stays on the positive side of spirit communication. I always say that I’m a historian first and a ghost investigator second. History, especially Long Island’s history, means everything to me, and I’ve worked hard over the years to preserve it. I served on the Huntington Historical Society’s Board of Trustees as Vice President for six years, and I served as a trustee on the GreenlawnCenterport Historical Association Board for three years. I’ve received numerous awards for my books and my research, my most recent, the Historic Preservation and Education Award given by the Oyster Bay Historical Society. So where do ghosts come into this? Well, when you’re researching old homes, Gold Coast mansions and historical structures, oftentimes I’ll come across a ghost story or two. What better way to learn about local history than through a ghost story? Although I intended my books for an adult audience, countless parents have thanked me and told me their children are finally reading. And they’re learning about local history!

54 • village connection • april 2013

In between my early Huntington books and my Ghosts of Long Island books, I did co-author a cookbook with Mr. Sausage. Anyone who lives in Huntington surely knows Mr. Sausage, the Italian pork store. It’s a cult following. I get jokes all the time, people asking me if it’s a haunted cookbook, but I do have haunted restaurants in my ghost books. I have found out by the way, that ghosts are good for business. But yes, I did write a cookbook as well. Half the recipes are mine, and the other half are Sal Baldanza’s. How can a ghost hunting, IrishAmerican with a Polish last name possibly write an Italian cookbook? My mother’s maiden name is D’Amato. I grew up learning how to cook Italian food. It’s in my blood. As if this all wasn’t enough, it’s been my goal all along to eventually break into fiction. I accomplished this feat this past September when my debut novel, The Medal was released. It’s been a whirlwind ever since, and I’m thoroughly enjoying the ride. The Medal is a work of inspirational fiction and is based on some true things that have happened in my life, including a miracle that took place after the death of my father. I’ve had an amazing religious experience along with all my paranormal experiences, and yes, they can co-exist peacefully as I often say on my blogtalk radio show, “The Kerriann & Joe Show – Spirit Connection.” As the months go on, I will share all my research, adventures and knowledge with you in my new column. I’ll talk about historical places, haunted places, I’ll introduce you to the world of the paranormal, and I’ll even throw in some controversial topics every now and then just to keep things interesting. If you have questions or comments feel free to email me. I have so many great stories I’d love to share with you, and I always love feedback. So stay tuned for next month when I’ll write about orbs, EVP’s and more, and you’ll learn what it’s like to be a ghost investigator. I’ll even mention some Huntington hot spots for ghosts. I hope you’ll enjoy the journey with me. Until next time…

Automate Your Life - Part II So have you pictured yourself, your Hovercraft isn’t parked outside in your driveway, the robot still didn’t finish your dinner or clean the house but who’s to say with the press of a button or the swipe of your finger on an app of your phone so much won’t happen by itself in your home? Like we discussed last month home automation is all around us and more and more households are getting on board. After the formation of one of the most well known automation companies over 40 years ago companies like Creston and AMX are fighting for the market share as automation technology grows and the costs associated with it becomes more affordable for all. St. Paddy’s Day is over but everyone wants to go “GREEN”: It’s all about saving money, saving our worlds resources and making life more convenient. So don’t be dependent on the kids to turn off the lights, don’t feed the utility companies when you’re not at home. With an easy to use, affordable and a flexible system the ability to turn lights on and off, heat and AC up and down can either be tailored to the families schedule or as easily manipulated whether you’re home at your bedside or away on a vacation. Away On A Trip?: Lights and shades can go on and off, up and down set on a schedule just like your right there. And just pulling up to the gate at JFK? Well imagine heating up your home right from your IPhone or Android device? And now your there, pulling into your garage! Well disarm that alarm, your house and family are safe and secure and POP- the lights go on, music streams into your favorite rooms and by simply viewing all the house status on a convenient well

placed wall panel you know all is normal and good. But what about the Clutter Effect?: A system can take away and clean up the look of any wall around your home. The touch panels we place takes the place of every thermostat, alarm and music keypad and even most light switches in the home. Be gone the days of having 6 or 8 light switches by your front door and hello a simple 6 button programmable keypad. Forget running around the house to change and schedule 6, 8 or maybe more thermostats with the changes in the weather when you can do it all from one place. And what about when it rains or gets cold in the middle of July? YEP- you can turn off your sprinkler system and even raise the heat in the pool for when you get home… Its automation! So it’s no longer for the Uber wealthy; while some over the counter systems are popping up and even your alarm company can promise affordable home automation systems costing excessive and absolute technology can be installed for far less than the “Big boys” of yesterday. Featured in our new showrooms, Élan G and RTI offer comprehensive systems that can do everything their pioneers in the industry can do at a far less and even 1/3 the cost! Companies like Buffalo Wild wings, famous homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright and even the famous “Buddy” the Cake boss makes use of an Élan G system to control every aspect of his home and his business facilities. Stop in today to our new showroom right in the heart of the village, test drive an automation system for yourself. See how an affordable, well placed and designed system can help your family everyday of the week.

Lisa Agosti

Lisa Agosti is a fine art painter, muralist and decorative artisan with over eighteen years experience. She specializes in unique custom finishes, murals and decorative art for public, commercial and residential areas. Born and raised in Huntington, she relocated to the area after spending years on the West Coast and Florida. “Huntington is a great place to raise a family and there is an appreciation for the arts here. I grew up here and that stays with you. I moved my business here in 2007, knowing that there is a solid artist community and the right clientele to patronize my work. I appreciate that I can make a living with a brush in my hand here… its every artist’s dream.” Lisa Agosti started her training as a fine artist at 15 years of age. As an apprentice under artist Joseph Mack at the Huntington School of Fine Arts, she received formal art training in painting, drawing and sculpture. This classical training forms the basis for her work. She continued her art education at New

York University, where she earned her BFA in Art and Aesthetics from the Gallatin School of Individualized study. Her work at NYU included a thesis exploring Arthood and Aesthetics; she graduated cum laude in 1999. Lisa Agosti studied the art of buon fresco painting at The Fresco School in Los Angeles, CA in 2011 under master fresco artist, Ilia Anossof. “This was a personal pilgrimage of sorts.”, Lisa explains, “A year later I was asked to do a mural in Italy. This is an opportunity to paint a mural in a 15th Century castle which has been recently renovated in the village my parents left many years ago to come to America.” The artist’s European heritage is an important element in her work. As an award winning artist and founder of L.A. Creative, Lisa has a vast experience in the arts. Working both individually and as part of a team, she has been involved in many projects during her career as an artist that vary greatly in their scope and focus: children’s hospitals, libraries, private homes, businesses,

showrooms and schools. All of the finishes offered can be customized to enhance an entire room or simply to add interest to an accent wall. Whether subtly elegant or boldly dramatic traditional or contemporary, decorative finishes evoke a certain feeling in a space, enhancing the ambiance of a room. Lisa Agosti looks to the future of decorative painting as an ever-evolving trade for an artist to grow with. She has a passion for texture, color, and patina and she draws her knowledge of materials and applications from the long European history of decorative arts. Inspiration comes from the buon fresco paintings of Michaelangelo, the sgraffito and faux marble embellishments on the buildings of Florence… the gilded ornaments in alterpieces, and the aged limestone walls that surround them. Using authentic products imported from Europe, like natural ochre pigments from Provence and fine lime plasters from Italy, endows a fine finish with a certain elegance. Lisa explains, ”These traditional decorative arts are timeless; their application in the modern world brings a feeling of authenticity and history to the space

62 • village connection • april 2013

it inhabits. In an age of information and technology, naturally derived products like fresco and lime plasters offer a refreshingly simple beauty created by organic materials from the earth...” Lisa is fluent in many types of media, and is capable of rendering in a variety of different styles to match the unique vision and aesthetic needs of each client. She has used her creative knowledge to complete projects that are sophisticated and traditional as well as those which warrant a more lighthearted approach. With each creative challenge, she has devised a unique creative solution to the project, making her an artist of distinction in the decorative arts industry. “Whether painting realistic imagery in a mural or developing a decorative finish for a wall…I focus on delivering a certain tone or ambiance by manipulating the materials and applications… changing the feeling of a room to reflect that which the client is seeking to achieve...it’s a bit like alchemy.” With her extensive experience in the field, her expertise in color and familiarity with diverse media, Lisa finds a visual solution to each project.

Master Painter Greg Oleanik ‘colors’ Long Island

If you have visited Cilantro, Maroni’s Cuisine or The Wine Cellar on Main in Northport or have driven past Fred’s Carpet in East Northport, you have undoubtedly appreciated the work of Greg Oleanik. Greg, a Northport resident and owner of Red Lion Painting and Design, honed his skills at Manhattan’s prestigious Art Students League, the New York Institute of Technology, and the Finishing School. When it comes to painting, he does it all, using his knowledge of fine art, faux finishes and color psychology to create enchanting

64 • village connection • april 2013

murals and interiors which resonate with just the right ambiance. Greg cooked up a festive color scheme for Cilantro, a Mexicaninspired eatery that recently opened on Woodbine Avenue in Northport Village. He gave the interior a true Southwestern flair by pumping up the volume of ‘cilantro’ green walls with eye-popping splashes of turquoise, yellow, orange, and purple. Greg also painted the famous Cow mural in Maroni’s private outdoor dining booth for two, which is both a tribute to Northport’s former renown as Great Cow Harbor and the Pink Floyd album, ‘Atom Heart Mother.’ “Maroni’s is all about rock and roll,” Greg said of this mural which is very much in keeping with the Maroni ‘vibe.’ Maroni’s is also home to Greg’s fanciful oil painting, “Across the Street,” which depicts the Beatles making their way to Northport’s iconic smallest restaurant. “It’s a play on the original Abbey Road album cover,” said the artist who favors the impressionist style of painting. Greg served as the charge scenic artist for John W. Engeman Theater’s productions, “Wait Until Dark,” “A Christmas Carol,” and the current theatrical comedy, “Boeing, Boeing,” which runs through May 5. Greg will also use the tricks of his trade in creating the scenery for “South Pacific” which opens on May 23. To appreciate the full range of Greg’s artistry, visit redlionpainting.com.

W

hat can we eat for lunch that is delicious and healthful too? Most afternoons we need food that is fast, but that’s not fast food. The best way to grab a quick and nutritious bite in the Village is to go to wildRocket, the new grab- and -go sandwich shop and café on New York Avenue. Rocket serves juices, smoothies, salads and globally inspired sandwich creations that are made fresh daily. wildRocket is the hippest sandwich spot in town. Everyone needs a quick lunch, whether we are running errands or eating at our desk. The sandwiches and salads are made here with an eclectic mix of international and traditional ingredients that will excite your palate while satisfying your need for speed. The very modern space has a cool vibe with bright orange and green graphics designed for you to view your options for lunch. Quickwiches and Café Salads are grab -and -go items that are made fresh and ready to go when you are! Here there’s a twist on everyone’s favorite; the Ham I Am—smoked ham, Swiss cheese, thinly sliced apples, honey Dijon mustard on multigrain bread. Try Rocket’s specially crafted Garden Burrito--a colorful and leafy wrap of grilled eggplant, roasted squash, basil puree, roasted red onion, and tomato wrapped in romaine lettuce--a truly vegan choice! If you have some time, you can stay awhile and order a Premium Salad or Signature Sandwich made to order, like the savory El Cubano-- layers of pork and pickles, a classic from the Latino culture or try their Vietnamese-inspired Bah Mi with spicy daikon to liven up lunch. Chef Marc Anthony Bynum, a celebrity chef and champion on Food Network’s famous show, “Chopped”, predicts that the Shorty ---braised beef short rib au jus, pickled red onion, goat cheese, wild mushrooms and spinach on fresh baguette will be everyone’s favorite once they have their first bite.

I am already a fan of Rocket’s salads, all made with a balance of tastes, salty or sweet with an added crunch. Dressings are freshly made with real ingredients and brightly flavored for balance on varietal greens. Rocket is another name for arugula, a slightly spicy green that is popular in Italian cuisine. These salads will wake up your palate and get you looking forward to lunch every day.

Best bet for a boost in your day is Rocket’s juice and smoothie bar! wildRocket uses only whole fruits and vegetables—no added sugars or sweeteners--so you get the pick- me -up with all the nutrition of real food. Order the house favorite Smoothie, The Red Racer, a blend of raspberries, strawberries, apples, OJ, and some Greek yogurt for an anti-oxidant bonus for your day! Even with many any other choices, you can still create your own custom smoothie blend. Need a snack to get you through the afternoon? Check out the Cheesebreads made from yucca and cheese, (they are gluten-free!) for a take on a Brazilian taste. These good bites are an added bonus to an already diverse and adventurous menu. wildRocket hits its target and soars with high quality ingredients and portable meals that make for good eating anytime of the day, especially at lunch! Hours are 11AM -8PM daily. Come by pick up a menu or call in an order to get even faster service. 1076 New York Avenue Huntington Village 631-923-0919

The Heart-Healthy Mediterranean Diet Neraki Greek Grill

Good news for good eats! The Mediterranean diet is a healthy way of eating. In a recent study involving thousands of people in Spain and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the health community confirms the benefits of this eating plan. Nutritionists, health coaches and whole-food eaters are not surprised. The revelation of this lifestyle diet dates back twenty years when Nancy Harmon Jenkins published her “Mediterranean Diet Cookbook”. The Mediterranean diet is a heart-healthy plan rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruit and vegetables. It’s low in red meat, low in sugar, processed carbohydrates and low in junk food. The Mediterranean diet encourages us to eat better by replacing those inflammatory foods that cause heart disease and cancer with healthy fats, lean proteins, legumes, low-fat dairy, whole grains and even a glass of wine with dinner! This “diet” is more of a way of living and studies show that this plan may actually help you to lose more weight and feel more satisfied than a traditional low-fat diet. Here in Huntington Village, we have so many exciting restaurants, and Greek cuisine seems even more appealing than ever. So, we’re going Greek! Healthy options abound at Neraki Greek Mediterranean Grill on Main Street, where you will find the flavors and the simplicity of traditional Greek food. Neraki offers many choices of freshly caught fish, grilled over charcoal and dressed in heart-healthy olive oil and lemon and for a distinctive Greek taste. The salads are colorful mixes of greens,

68 • village connection • april 2013

tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, peppers and a light sprinkling of feta cheese, which complement the good nutrition of the Mediterranean meal. Owner Alex Moschos is a true believer in the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and in his native Greek cuisine. He goes to market for fresh seafood and produce daily to insure that his customers enjoy “the best the world has to offer”. Authentic spices like Greek oregano are also a staple of this restaurant’s cuisine. Neraki serves real food in the Greek tradition. Start with appetizers called meze that are part of their ancient culture of sharing your meal with family and friends. Tasty small plates like grilled eggplant and zucchini slices served with tzatziki, a cucumber-flavored yogurt spread, is a perfectly delectable way of adding vegetables to you diet. Greek specialties like grilled octopus, and sardines, which are very high in omega -3 oils deliver lots of immune-boosters. According to doctors in a Harvard University study, if you are eating out, order grilled fish and spinach or other greens sautéed with olive oil and garlic for an anti-inflammatory combo with the added benefits of garlic, which is known to have blood pressure –lowering effects. Neraki also serves lunch with choices that offer the hearty and healthy spirit of Greek cuisine! Neraki Greek Mediterranean Grill 273 Main Street Huntington Village 631-385-3474

John DeRosa’s ‘Reflections’ on Reality

This month visitors to the Smithtown Township Arts Council’s juried fine art exhibition, “Reflections,” will view two still lifes created by Northport High School media arts teacher John DeRosa. Work was submitted by artists from around the country. John’s images were among 68 pieces chosen by juror James Henry Rubin from 191 submissions. Mr. Rubin, an acclaimed art historian and expert in 19th century European art, called for works in which reflection, either physical or psychological, was the primary motif, making for “an interplay between perception and conception.” Entries, which were judged

on originality and insight, included traditional as well as emerging media. Visitors will be dazzled by the cornucopia of watercolors, oils, charcoals, bronzes, archival prints, and mixed media sculpture included in the show and the myriad of ways in which reflection was interpreted. The contest was a perfect fit for John who uses cutting edge technology to create images that appear to be photographs, but are actually computer-generated. In fact, John specializes in creating reflection in his images. In a new age twist on the ancient art of trompe l’oeil (French for “trick the eye”), John painstakingly models primitive shapes into multi-faceted, highly detailed three-dimensional forms and then adds lighting, shadow and texture to create exacting realism. The still lifes that were selected by Mr. Rubin, “Rounding the Bend,” and “Reflections and Revelations” meld well color-wise. “Reflections and Revelations,” in particular, showcases John’s forte for depicting light dancing off shiny spheres. These 3D geometric forms, in turn, reflect and are reflected in metallic, mirror-like rectangular prisms, giving the image an Escher-like quality. The exhibition runs through April 26 at the Mill Pond House Gallery, 660 Rt. 25A, St. James. The gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, and from noon to 4 pm on weekends. Admission is free. To see more of John’s work, visit derosadesigns.com.

Abita Spring IPA

Spring IPA (March-May) is a West Coast-style IPA with an up-front intense hop flavor and aroma. Amarillo and Centennial hops give the brew a rich and resinous flavor of citrus and spice. This bright pale ale has a malt sweetness that will give way to a pleasant bitter. It pairs well with Mexican or spicy Szechwan Chinese food. Spring IPA is a nice accompaniment for cheeses with strong flavors, like sharp cheddar or goat cheese.

Lights, Camera... Huntington! “When it comes to cinematography, New York has a street-style.” remarked the late cinematographer William Fraker (“Rosemary’s Baby”, “Bullitt”). Early on, New York didn’t have the labs and the equipment Hollywood had, so this gritty, do-it-yourself film-making style started in New York and Long Island. With the help of many local, talented do-it-yourself types, I filmed seven feature films, and one documentary in and around Huntington. I have filmed scenes for my films at such local places as Target Rock, the old Party Lounge on Main Street, Finnegans, Skorpios Restaurant, Orange and White Taxi, Timmy Tattoo, Viva Loco, Ripe Art Gallery, Huntington Country Inn, Huntington Hospital, and both village cemeteries. Film and Video production’s key word

76 • village connection • april 2013

may be “Location! Location! Location!” but don’t forget that other key word- permission! Some location owners may think you’ll tie up their business all day with movie-making and they will refuse your request to film at their place. When asking permission to film at a location, I push the fact I am filming in digital video, and will need only a minimum of bulky equipment and set-up/filming time. Some location owners may require you carry insurance, but very affordable third-party property insurance can be obtained. I probably used Huntington the most for my film “Mad Wolf ”, which was based on true events that took place in Huntington during the Revolutionary War. We had an overload of colonial homes and locations to choose from. We even staged scenes inside antique stores in Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor. Pretty much every member of the very helpful Huntington Militia got a close up! A funny incident on that film was when we took our costumed actors into Skorpios Restaurant for a lunch break. “None of the usual lunchtime customers there seemed to notice this unexpected wave of Minutemen and Redcoats coming in to eat.” recalled “Mad Wolf ”’s co-producer/actress Donna Drake. If you are filming a scene with high drama, requiring for example, a fight or screaming- let everybody within a block know. In my film “Sharp and Sudden”, two bounty hunters argue over who gets to turn in their captive fugitive. The fugitive escapes, and a bounty hunter shoots out her car window (Using an amazingly simple, effective “gun-shot” effect.) That means people around you will hear yells, bangs and chaos. We simply went around the block (Elm Street) the day before, telling everybody when and where the mayhem will take place. Due to the finances and time it takes to make movies with16mm or 35mm film, many early indie film-makers filmed in simple locations- like living rooms and backyards. With digital video, your “camera grip-truck” can fit in a back-pack. You can film in all sorts of locations, and Huntington has a lot to offer. On Saturday, April 13th, at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre, I am teaching a one-day, interactive class on the unexpected real-world obstacles that can hinder or stop a video production or career. It’s basically a class on the very crazy stuff film schools overlook. Information on the class can be found at the Cinema Arts Centre’s website (www.cinemaartscentre.org) or my website (www. huntingtonactionfilms.com)
