Good, you found me... This issue is so packed - our biggest yet at 100 pages - that I had to give up my publisher’s page to fit it all in. And since that means I only have to write a few sentences instead of paragraphs, I’ll consider it a little vacation in the middle of our deadline craziness. We hope you enjoy this issue of Village Connection Magazine. We literally lose sleep working to make each issue better than the one before. We welcome your feedback and suggestions, or even a note just to say hi. Email us at VillageConnection@live.com. In the meantime, I’ll see you in the Village...

Beauty

Transitions to Spring

April is a time for renewal. Think about transitioning your winter beauty look as we delve deep into spring’s warm embrace. Take a stepped approach to transforming hair color as we ease our way to May. Move a shade lighter from your winter hue. Auburn browns can shift to lighter chocolates, caramel blondes to slightly sunnier golden tones, velvety reds to a more airy strawberry. Color transitions should be natural-looking, relaxed. There’s no need for a dramatic color change in April. Try a color glossing treatment to return moisture and shine to thirsty locks that have been dried out from cold winter blasts. Slough off dry winter skin with a Green Science Skin Renewing facial, packed with antioxidants. An Enbrightenment Illuminating facial will improve your skin’s clarity, diminishing the appearance of dark spots and discoloration. Your face will feel soft and dewy – ready for warm summer fun! Prep your skin head to toe with an all-over body polish to remove dry, dead skin cells. This is especially great for elbows and knees soon to make their debut in sleeveless spring dresses, skorts and shorts. Aveda’s limited edition spring-summer makeup collection makes eyes pop along with shimmering skin and luscious lips compliments of Aveda color and skin care will make you the envy of all on lookers. The Kissam Barn Built in 1790

in the nearby farming community of Lloyd Harbor, the barn, currently known as the Kissam Barn, can be historically traced back to the Rogers family, who used the structure on their homestead for livestock housing. Legend has it, however, the barn also housed British troops who were quartered there during the Revolution. In March 1972, the three-bay barn, measuring 44 feet across the front, 38 feet deep and 30 feet high, was owned by Mr. & Mrs. Grenville D. Braman. The old building was in disrepair. Offered as a gift, with the stipulation that it had to be removed down to clean ground from the Braman’s property, the vintage barn, although having no historical significance, was irresistible to the Society, who immediately embraced the idea of the big old building hosting fund, raising events, educational programs and exhibits. A framing plan was drawn and volunteers wrote out 900 numbered tags that were nailed to each joint in the entire main building and adjoining sheep shed. Piece by piece the parts were laid out on a huge flatbed trailer and transported to .the Kissam House. The timbers were stored under tarpaulins for nine months until the society could raise the necessary funds to pay for the reconstruction. Much of the wood had to be replaced and new oak pegs, tenions and mortises had to be hand-hewn as not one nail would be used. The actual “barn-raising” took place in the freezing 15-degree weather on January 31st, 1973. As over 30 devoted

Huntington Historical Society Presents: Antiques

volunteers stood by, the 40-ton crane hoisted four two-ton wooden frames or “bents” and swung them into place. Take your opportunity to finish the barn by visiting “Antiques in April” on April 15, 22, and 29, featuring Historical Society Barn Sale, antique furniture, books, smalls, the Museum Shop will be open, and antique dealers will be set on the property. Free admission to public.

Are you having difficulty scheduling your workouts because of time constraints? Most of us have very busy lives and when something has to “give” it often is exercise. Missing workouts because there are so many things we need to get done in a day and we “don’t have time” is a complaint that I hear all too often. I have the solution! It’s called “increasing your exercise intensity.” Exercise Intensity is how much work is being done by your body while you are exercising. The higher the intensity the more calories you burn and the harder your muscles work in a shorter period of time. For example, you can walk on the treadmill for 60 minutes at a low intensity and burn 200 calories or you can power walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes at a faster pace and walking uphill and burn the same 200 calories or more. The Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and the Talk Tests are the easiest ways to determine how hard you are working and how intense your exercises are. The RPE is a scale from 1-10. Number 1 is your body at rest, 2-4 is light exercise, 5-7 is hard to somewhat hard, and 8-10 is extremely hard to maximum exertion. While you are exercising, think of this scale in your head and determine what your number is. An intensity of 5-7 is optimal to achieve an increase in calorie burn for a shorter period of time. You can also work at 5-7 for a period of time, then drop to 2-4 for a minute or 2 then work at 8-10 for a few minutes then

back down to a 5-7. This is just an example of how you can vary the intensity to keep your muscles and cardiovascular system working hard and not have to spend a long time exercising. The Talk Test is another way to determine how hard you are working. You want to be able to speak a word or two but not be able to carry on a full conversation. If someone asks you a question and it is tough but you can answer with one or two words then you are working hard (RPE 5-7). If you can talk continuously then you need to increase the intensity until you cannot converse. If you are not able to say even one word you are probably working extremely hard or at maximum exertion (RPE 8-10) and may want to reduce the intensity slightly or stay here for a short period of time and then bring it down. The best part of using these two simple tests is to learn how to increase your intensity and decrease the amount of time you are exercising while doing the same amount of work, burning the same amount of calories and achieving the same benefits as you would if you were exercising for twice as long. Child Have ADHD? Stop Feeding Them This! A key strategy to reducing and eliminating ADHD symptoms naturally

There’s evidence suggesting that gluten sensitivity may be at the root of many neurological and psychiatric conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). What is gluten? It’s a protein found in wheat grain and part of “gluey” proline and glutamine rich proteins known as prolamines. Prolamines are found in all cereal grains, even rice, corn and oats, but only wheat, and to a lesser extent rye, spelt and einkorn, are associated with the serious neurological and autoimmune reactions often linked to autism spectrum disorder. Gluten is only found in wheat species. Spelt or einhorn gluten has dramatically lower antigenicity of common wheat (Triticulum aestivum) that is used in bread products. Other cereal grasses have what are known as prolamines (proline-glutamine rich proteins) with rye containing secalin, barley containing horedin, etc, but they have very little cross-reactivity with antigens associated with wheat intolerance. It has long been known that people with celiac disease are also more likely to suffer from ADHD, another condition that is heavily influenced by dietary habits. However, while the treatment of celiac disease is a completely gluten-free diet, with ADHD the most oft-cited dietary villain is sugar, whereas grains are often overlooked (even though they act much like sugar in your body). It turns out, though, that there may be a closer link between the symptoms of celiac disease and ADHD than was previously recognized, and that connection is gluten. A Gluten-Free Diet May “Cure” ADHD Many children with ADHD do not respond well to most grains, especially wheat. This could be because they have full-blown celiac disease, which impacts an average of one out of every 133 people in the United States (although some studies have found that this number may be as high as 1 in 33 in at-risk populations) -- or because they have a less obvious condition known as gluten sensitivity. People with gluten sensitivity, which may comprise 10 percent of the U.S. population or more, experience many of the same symptoms as celiac disease causes, including headaches, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, gas and more, but may be unaware that the culprit triggering these symptoms is wheat and other glutencontaining grains. It’s also very possible to have celiac disease and not know it … as researchers state, “in many cases, the disease

34 • village connection • april 2012

may be clinically silent despite manifest small bowel mucosal lesions.” But the psychological and behavioral symptoms of ADHD are now overlapping so often with those of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity that it’s recommended “celiac disease … be included in the ADHD symptom checklist.” This suggestion was prompted by a new study, which found people with ADHD who tested positive for celiac disease improved significantly after following a gluten-free diet for at least six months. The researchers noted: “After initiation of the gluten-free diet, patients or their parents reported a significant improvement in their behavior and functioning compared to the period before

celiac diagnosis and treatment … “ It may sound strange to you that eating a grain that wreaks havoc on your gut would manifest as symptoms related to your brain, rather than your digestion, but grains are inherently pro-inflammatory and will worsen any condition that has chronic inflammation at its root -- and not just inflammation in your gut, but anywhere in your body. Chronic inflammation in your body can wreak havoc in your brain, and the importance of reducing inflammation when dealing with mental health issues is well known. It is very common for people to experience a wide variety of mental health and emotional improvements upon eliminating gluten from their diet. Why Even Whole, Sprouted Wheat is a Problem I recommend that everyone following my beginner nutrition plan eliminate all gluten from their diets, whether or not they have celiac disease or ADHD, because many

experience health improvements upon doing so. Among the most important foods to avoid are those gluten-containing grains that contain gliadin molecules, such as wheat. When gliadin in the wheat protein complex (containing over 23,000 proteins) activates the protein zonulin in the gut, it opens up the gaps between the enterocytes causing an influx of improperly digested wheat proteins and stomach bacteria. Therefore regardless of your sensitivity level to the wheat proteins, gliadin opens up a pandora’s box of intestinal permeability, and subsequent systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation. Wheat also contains high amounts of wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), a glycoprotein classified as a lectin, which is largely responsible for many of wheat’s ill effects. Other grains high in lectins include rice, spelt, and rye. Interestingly enough, the highest amounts of WGA is found in whole wheat, including its sprouted form, which is touted as being the most healthful form of all. Lectins are actually designed to withstand degradation through a wide range of pH and temperatures, which is why sprouting, fermenting and cooking will NOT negate its ill effects. WGA lectin is particularly tough because it’s actually formed by the same disulfide bonds that give strength and resilience to vulcanized rubber and human hair. Furthermore, because lectins are so small and hard to digest, they tend to bioaccumulate in your body, where they can interfere with biological processes. WGA is particularly troublesome in this regard. Studies indicate it has a number of health-harming characteristics and activities: Why ADHD Symptoms are Closely Linked to Gut Health A variety of behavioral problems are linked to problems in your

gut, not only from gluten, WGA and other components of grains but also due to the gut-brain connection. The gut-brain connection is well recognized as a basic tenet of physiology and medicine, so this isn’t all that surprising, even though it’s often overlooked. There’s also a wealth of evidence showing gastrointestinal involvement in a variety of neurological diseases. With this in mind, it should also be crystal clear that nourishing your gut flora is extremely important at all life stages because in a very real sense you have two brains, one inside your skull and one in your gut, and each needs its own vital nourishment. Your gut and your brain are actually created out of the same type of tissue. During fetal development, one part turns into your central nervous system while the other develops into your enteric nervous system. These two systems are connected via the vagus nerve, the tenth cranial nerve that runs from your brain stem down to your abdomen. This is what connects your two brains together, and explains such phenomena as getting butterflies in your stomach when you’re nervous, for example. This connection may ex[lain why the toxicity in your gut can flow throughout your body and into your brain, where it can cause symptoms of autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression, schizophrenia and other mental disorders.

What is it about a baby’s shy smile or knowing look that makes our hearts do flip flops? Nobel Prizewinning student of animal behavior, Konrad Lorenz, observed that babies, regardless of species, have heads that are large in proportion to their bodies, big, round eyes, prominent foreheads, and chubby cheeks. According to Lorenz, we are instinctively programmed to feel tenderness when we see these features. Babies and young children have an innocence and an ethereal beauty, and Tricia Rocco, owner of HarborView Photography, has a gift for capturing these qualities in her images. “From a young age, I saw the world in pictures,” said the Northport resident who drew inspiration from her father who used a twin lens reflex camera for family pictures. Tricia’s photographs evolve as she lets her diminutive subjects be themselves, either in her studio or a location that holds meaning for the parents. “Pure love emanates from them,” Tricia said, adding that it is her passion to create photographic keepsakes which convey how much babies and children bring to the world simply by being themselves. Tricia, who takes care to showcase the eyes in her evocative portraits, said that she often melts when babies or children look at her, and she hopes that viewers of her work feel the same. World-renowned photographer Anne Geddes took particular pleasure in taking pictures of babies nestled in flowers or dressed as vegetables, and Tricia also uses accessories -- pearls, flowers and tutus -- to add the color and vibrancy that makes her images sing. Setting the Stage to Sell this Spring By Marilyn Urso , Licensed Real Estate Broker We’ve all watched the many TV reality shows that discuss staging a home to get the best price when selling. Given the economic climate today, many homeowners think they can’t afford to stage their home the way their REALTOR suggests. Here are some affordable solutions to that problem. Start outside the home. Remember, “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.” Stand across the street and look at your home and property. Is it inviting? Does it make you want to see what’s inside? Are the shrubs neatly trimmed back so they don’t block the view of the house? Here are some inexpensive items that you can do yourself to maintain a good first impression: • Keep the lawn mowed – a diagonal cut looks best. • Use marigolds, daffodils and other yellow flowers along the walk or near the front door. Yellow sells! • Clean all the windows – inside and outside. • Power the exterior if possible to remove dirt, pollen and cobwebs etc. • Get a new door mat, mailbox and numbers on your home if needed. • Make sure the porch lights and doorbell are in working order. • Keep the back yard manicured and replace or eliminate any sheds, play sets or outdoor furniture as needed. It’s better to have less than to have broken down items present. There are also many items you can take care of on the interior that won’t cost a lot. Here’s a list of the easiest items: • Clear the clutter. Remove all unnecessary items from counter tops in the kitchen and baths and all other rooms. • Less furniture makes a room look bigger. If you plan to move it with you then find another place to store it. If you’re not keeping it then get rid of it now! Sell it, throw it out, or give it to charity. • De-personalize the rooms. Family photos should be packed up and out of sight. They can be a distraction to buyers. • Clean out closets and remove excess items. Pack them up and neatly store them in the garage or basement. This includes linen closets, kitchen cabinets and pantry areas. • Keep bookcases neat and organized – or better yet almost empty • Make sure each room has good lighting. Replace Bulbs to brightest possible – try LED bulbs if the CFL variety doesn’t seem bright enough. They are, by the way, a ‘Green’ selling feature for the economy-minded buyer! • Remove old, worn carpeting where possible, especially if it is hiding nice wood floors! • Paint if needed and if it fits in your budget – keep colors neutral but not stark white. Do what you can as quickly as you can to make that perfect ‘first impression’ Good Luck & Good Selling!

The Value of Social Media Something to think about; 106 million people watched the final episode of M-A-S-H on TV February 28, 1983. We watched the Giants beat New England and so did 112 million people. Got Facebook? Twitter? Linkedin? 1 billion people are now using Facebook and twitter combined! According to Google, as of the end of 2010, just shy of 7 billion people inhabit our planet. One-sixth of the world communicates via social media and this number continues to grow, everyday. It cost 3.5 million dollars to place a 30 second Ad during the Superbowl, so what does this mean? It means that the TV Networks understand the value of reaching a lot of people, if only for 30 seconds. We can approximate the value of airing a 30 second commercial via Facebook & Twitter to be approximately 30.5 million dollars for a 30 second commercial! There are hundreds of Social Media Sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, MySpace, Meetup, Cafemom and others, with more being created everyday. Thinking about what this means is overwhelming to most. Social media has changed the world; here are a few ways to remind you just how valuable (and yes, sometimes not so valuable) this media is. Arab uprisings in the Middle East - Social media has been used to organize protests, for government Crackdowns, injustices and even to change the way the public thinks! UK Riots - Three full days of utter and complete rioting in London! Did you know that the government actually considered turning off access to social media networking sites to try and gain order? Brought Down a Senator - I Bet Mr. Anthony Weiner wishes he never posted “special” pictures on twitter!

The world stood in shock and awe only to watch via social media earthquake and Tsunami events that changed Japans landscape, forever. How about Charlie Sheen’s complete and utter meltdown with Twitter’s #winning? Remember “Chicken Chicken Sheen Dinner”, or “Tigers blood”? Thank Social Media. Thank Facebook, and the countless other Social Media Sites for connecting the world in a way that would make Alexander Graham Bell invention of the telephone, proud! Known Mark Zuckerberg quotes: “I started the site when I was 19. I didn’t know much about business back then.” “The web is at a really important turning point right now. Up until recently, the default on the web has been that most things aren’t social and most things don’t use your real identity. We’re building toward a web where the default is social.” “I was watching an interview with Steve Jobs the other day, in which he said that ‘In order to be doing something like this, you have to really, really like what you’re doing, because otherwise it just doesn’t make sense.’ The demands and the amount of work that it takes to put something like [Facebook] into place, it’s just so much that if you weren’t completely into what you were doing and you didn’t think it was an important thing, then it would be irrational to spend that much time on it.” Ask a tech! – Have a tech question? Send us your technology questions, we post your question and provide a solution! Send your questions to rob@imson.com

Today’s Factoid - NIAC, the first electronic computer, appeared 50 years ago. The original ENIAC was about 80 feet long, weighed 30 tons, had 17,000 tubes. By comparison, a desktop computer today can store a million times more information than an ENIAC, and is 50,000 times faster.

It’s Tulip Time at Heckscher Park After months of enduring chilly weather, many Long Islanders are thrilled that Spring has finally arrived and we are looking forward to taking part in outdoor activities and events throughout the area. For your outdoor enjoyment and family entertainment, Heckscher Park will be holding its 12th annual Huntington Tulip Festival on Sunday, May 6. I always enjoy this festival because not only is it wonderful to walk around the park and enjoy the beauty of more than 20,000 tulips, but it’s also a fun afternoon that will keep the children happy and entertained for hours. As you stroll through the park, enjoy the beauty of the spectacular spring blooms and if you have young children, they can participate in a variety of activities such as face painting, arts and crafts, and they can also visit many different types of activity booths and exhibits. A fun-filled afternoon of entertaining theatrical and musical performances and a children’s parade is also scheduled to take place at the Chapin Rainbow Stage and these will certainly be a hit for children and the parents will enjoy watching them as well. The Heckscher Park Tulip Festival is a great family-friendly event and if you haven’t had a chance to attend in previous years, mark your calendar and make plans to attend in May. The Tulip festival will take place from 11am until 4pm on Sunday May 6th at

Heckscher Park in Huntington Village. I’m looking forward to this year’s Tulip festival and hope to see you there among the friendly faces and the twenty thousand tulips that make this festival a fun a popular Huntington event!

Achieving both balance and harmony are essential in order for a design project to be successful. The end users, who are the clients, in a residential design project, must experience both. For the professional designer you are required to combine artistic and technical skills-this is obvious. The importance of understanding the client’s psychological needs, however, is at least as important. The fear that a designer will behave in a judgmental manner is exacerbated by the theatrical and condescending way that some reality show primadonna designers behave in front of the camera. Some people are gluttons for this kind of abuse, and there are those out there willing to reinforce the insecurities of these people by treating them badly. I am here to tell you that most designers are really nice, normal and talented people, who respect confidences, budget constraints, deadlines and the personality differences of their clients. They really do want you to relax and enjoy the process of design. Of course the worshipful client with very deep pockets, no particular design preferences and a “Whatever you think!” attitude is any designer’s idea of a dream come true. But these clients are few and far between-- as rare as the drama-queen decorator that makes a client feel unworthy of their oh-so-valuable time.

The question is, “Should I hire an interior designer or go it alone for this project?” If you are even considering hiring a designer and have not, it may be that you feel that you are not wealthy enough. This should not deter you, as there are many levels of service available, one of which can be made to fit into your budget. For example, you can contact the local branches of the national design societies, such as the Long Island Chapter of the IDS (Interior Design Society), which specializes in residential, rather than commercial interior design. They will give you the names of designers who can help within parameters that are comfortable for you. Speaking of which, comfort doesn’t just refer to money matters. In addition to being sure that there are clear expectations on both sides--as with any business transaction--you need to fall in love just a little. Let’s say “fall in like.” You need, on both ends, to feel that there is a blending of personalities. You and your designer will be “dating” for a while, so you will have to “click.” And get references, of course. Give it a try. You’ve got nothing to lose, and as the commercial says, “You’re Worth It!!” Next time--Shop your home, or start with a clean slate?

Northport History

A Farm With A Difference East Northport was a prosperous farming community from colonial times until the housing boom following the Second World War. Best known for its potatoes, cucumbers and cabbage, the area also produced wheat, corn, and spinach. The Farmers’ Club formed in the mid-1800s also delved into dairy farming, while the Richter farm produced apples and pears, as it still does today. The most unusual type of farming appeared in1915 when James Kane leased property from L. B. Gildersleeve to house a silver fox breeding farm. Kane immediately constructed a number of pens for the animals and a small house for the keepers. As soon as everything was prepared, a number of silver foxes were shipped in and seven pairs were mated. In spite of initial doubts as to the suitability of Long Island as a breeding place, Kane’s son William, who was in charge, reported in July that the results had exceeded all expectations having produced 26 pups valued at $1000 each. The success of the initial breeding season led the Kanes to add additional breeding pens. Although the safety of these valuable creatures was a major concern, it seems that Kane had difficulty keeping them under control. One night in early July, a two-month-old pup escaped from his cage causing a considerable amount of activity in the area. He finally returned the next morning

60 • village connection • april 2012

in answer to his mother’s calls heard throughout the night. Another escape that occurred in October involved a number of pursuers. The account given in the Long Islander noted: “The black silver fox that escaped from the Fox Ranch here has been captured. After a three hour chase of very fast running he took to earth. Then three hours of hard digging and he was bagged. Paul Seaman, of Smithtown, furnished the hounds that did the trick. The other men that enjoyed this chase were Melville Brush, of Smithtown, and Hiram P. Ketcham, of East Northport. “ The Great War in Europe severely cut into the fur market since Kane could not ship pelts to England. Nearly all the pups, with the exception of some sold for breeding purposes, were kept on the farm. By the fall of 1918, the entire enterprise had been moved to the Adirondacks. Local farms continued to produce vegetables and fruit for the area, but East Northport had lost its most exotic crop. Bob Little is a long-time resident of the Northport area who greatly enjoys delving into the community’s fascinating history and writing his column for the Northport Historical Society.

playing it safe • david tuohy TEN TIPS FOR SAFE

SPRING CLEANING 1.

Don’t rush because you’re tired or in a hurry. This is really the most basic spring cleaning safety tip. The better thing to do when you are exhausted is to stop and take a break instead of being unsafe.

2. Be careful moving large pieces of furniture and appliances.

Use proper lifting techniques. Wear shoes when moving heavy items so you don't hurt your toes. Finally, if you feel it is just too heavy and you can't find someone to help you, don't move it; clean around it!

6.

Don't carry too much stuff at once, especially on stairs. Make sure you keep a hand free to hold onto the stair railing.

7.

Follow cleaning product label safety instructions and recommendations. Cleaning supplies can create nasty fumes, so make sure you get some fresh air.

8.

Wear a mask when cleaning dusty areas. If you are at all allergic to dust this tip is very important.

9.

3.

Do not leave buckets filled with water around your home. Even small amounts of water are a drowning hazard for small children.

4.

Put away all your cleaning supplies in a childproof cabinet when done cleaning for the day. Follow these spring cleaning safety tips to have a safe and productive spring cleaning!

Be safe while on ladders and step stools. Don’t lean too far to either side. Have someone available to hold the ladder steady for you if possible, and make sure before you step on them that the rungs are not wet, and you are wearing non-skid shoes. Be careful when walking on wet surfaces. Everyone knows how easy it is to slip on a wet floor. Make sure others in your family, including children, are also warned of the wet floor to keep them safe.

5. Keep stairs, landings, and walkways clear of clutter. Spring

cleaning is a great time to declutter your home, but you need to make sure all the boxes and bags of stuff you are getting rid of don't cause a safety concern.

seniors Summer finds many of us under the blazing sun sporting mean looking shades. (By the way shades are called “sunglasses” by the uncool). Because shades look so cool, most celebrities wouldn’t be caught dead without them – even at night. Sunglasses, uh, I mean Shades come in all sorts of shapes, colors and prices but I wondered whether they have a real purpose other than fashion and eye comfort. According to a brochure I found at my eye doctor’s office, sunlight contains some really harmful elements with the worst being Ultraviolet (UV) Light. UV light has been found to contribute to cataracts, eyelid cancers and macular degeneration, which is one of the major causes of vision loss in the U.S. for people over age 60. In addition UV light can prematurely wrinkle and age the skin around eyes. To protect us from this evil, car windshield glass and most prescription eyeglass lenses have built in UV protection. When buying new shades, in addition to checking them in the mirror, make sure the label says they exclude harmful UV light. If not, they can actually make matters worse. For

Eye Shades example, should the lenses provide little or no UV protection, the reduced light from the dark glasses will cause the iris to open up more letting in additional UV rays that would expose the retina to even more damage. As a nerdy substitute, eyeglass wearers like me buy photosensitive lenses (I love them) that are darkened by the UV rays in sunlight. However, because windshields filter out all the UV rays, they won’t darken inside a car - so to avoid squinting and look real cool I put on my great looking prescription shades in a car. Whatever the season, don’t take sunlight lightly. Both water and snow reflect back 80 percent or more of sun rays so that they hit your eyes and skin a second time. The brochure cautions everyone to wear (a brimmed hat, sunscreen and) sunglasses year-round even on overcast days. My attitude is if you must do it, do it right - with the meanest looking shades possible. Outdoor Living VERSATILITY MAKES MANUFACTURED WALLSTONES THE PERFECT LANDSCAPE AND GARDEN WALL SOLUTION Along with the welcome of warm spring breezes, fragrant blossoms and longer days comes the list of seasonal chores, which for many homeowners involves the planning and maintenance of gardens and surrounding landscapes along with the possible addition of a new or revitalized patio space to boost the family’s outdoor lifestyle experiences. We have all had the months of winter to ascertain just what needs to be accomplished this spring in order to spruce-up outdoor spaces. If your “to-do” list encompasses laying a garden wall, building a retaining wall to solve an embankment issue, or running a perimeter rock wall or fencing, you may want to consider bringing into play manufactured wallstones, once you know more about their overall efficiency and aesthetic advantages over natural stone and other alternatives. Manufactured wallstones are more than just functional, and when properly installed, should in no way be compared to painted or texturefaced, cinderblock landscape wall units that are subject to chipping, peeling, cracking, dislodging and more importantly, structural failure. When compared to natural stone such as sandstone, slate, limestone, granite and flagstone, manufactured wallstones are usually a far less costly material. Because the wallstones are designed to use in a wall system, versatility and ease of installation arealso prime factors. Contingent on the attributes of the product, tree rings, freestanding and retaining walls, straight, curved and serpentine walls, as well as various types of perimeter walls that can also serve as casual seating areas can often be built with the same style of wall unit. A nice add-on when deciding on a wall system for fencing on the perimeters of property or as a separation between say, the front and backyard or a pool area, is the integration of a garden or entry gate. Wallstones are commonly available with single-sided or doublesided, natural rock textured and/or distressed (aged-looking) faces. The choice is personal and also depends largely on what type of wall you are planning and what surfaces will be exposed once installed. Some styles are available with right or left corner units. Because of their modular configurations, the wallstones can be easily arranged in staggered, running bond patterns that give a tailored design or in some cases, random positions.

70 • village connection • april 2012

Because they are manufactured under stringent, controlled standards, premium wallstones assure a tight-fitting system without sacrificing a desired natural stone appearance. This effectively eliminates the many crevices found in natural stone installations that can attract animal nesting and the accumulation of debris that usually occurs with freely placed, loose-fitting natural rock. It is also nice to know that color and texture options in manufactured wallstones will be both architecturally and environmentally compatible with a home’s style and other visual characteristics as well as a surrounding landscape, be it woods, a simple tree or shrubbery line, garden bed or a dramatic panorama. Just as color and texture can attract the consumer to a particular natural rock or an interlocking concrete pavement, so it is with wall systems. Leading manufacturers of pavers and wallstones have extended their product lines to also include an array of outdoor living room components. The products, depending on the manufacturer, can include outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, open-air kitchens and pizza ovens, refreshment bars and patio tables, and pond-less waterfalls. These outdoor lifestyle enhancements have wallstones integrated into their design or procedure for installation, which can be coordinated to match landscape wall systems in your overall design.Proper installation of a wall system involves excavation, base preparation including a levering course of C-33 sand into the bottom of the resulting trench, leveling, in some instances back fill, and other factors that must be taken into account. For retaining walls over 36”, an engineer may be required. Check with local officials for regulations that cover the wall that you will be building before beginning wall projects. Not all wall designs are ideal for do-it-yourself projects; you may want to engage the services of a professional landscape designer or hardscape contractor for best results. Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers, Inc. He is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of paving stones, wall stones and many outdoor living products. What Is the Most Tax-Efficient Way to Take a Distribution from a Retirement Plan? If you receive a distribution from a qualified retirement plan, such as a 401(k), you need to consider whether to pay taxes now or to roll over the account to another tax-deferred plan. A correctly implemented rollover can avoid current taxes and allow the funds to continue accumulating tax deferred.

Paying Current Taxes with a Lump-Sum Distribution If you decide to take a lump-sum distribution, income taxes are due on the total amount of the distribution and are due in the year in which you cash out. Employers are required to withhold 20 percent automatically from the check and apply it toward federal income taxes, so you will receive only 80 percent of your total vested value in the plan. The advantage of a lump-sum distribution is that you can spend or invest the balance as you wish. The problem with this approach

is parting with all those tax dollars. Income taxes on the total distribution are taxed at your marginal income tax rate. If the distribution is large, it could easily move you into a higher tax bracket. Distributions taken prior to age 59½ are subject to an additional 10% federal income tax penalty. If you were born prior to 1936, there are two special options that can help reduce your tax burden on a lump sum. The first special option, 10-year averaging, enables you to treat the distribution as if it were received in equal installments over a 10-year period. You then calculate your tax liability using the 1986 tax tables for a single filer. The second option, capital gains tax treatment, allows you to have the pre-1974 portion of your distribution taxed at a flat rate of 20 percent. The balance can be taxed under 10-year averaging, if you qualify. To qualify for either of these special options, you must have participated in the retirement plan for at least five years and you must be receiving a total distribution of your retirement account. Note that these special tax treatments are one-time propositions for those born prior to 1936. Once you elect to use a special option, future distributions will be subject to ordinary income taxes.

Deferring Taxes with a Rollover If you don’t qualify for the above options or don’t want to pay current taxes on your

lump-sum distribution, you can roll the money into a traditional IRA. If instead you choose a rollover from a tax-deferred plan to a Roth IRA, you must pay income taxes on the total amount converted in that tax year. However, future withdrawals of earnings from a Roth IRA are free of federal income tax as long as the account has been held for at least five tax years. If you elect to use an IRA rollover, you can avoid potential tax and penalty problems by electing a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer; in other words, the money never passes through your hands. IRA rollovers must be completed within 60 days of the distribution to avoid current taxes and penalties. An IRA rollover allows your retirement nest egg to continue compounding tax deferred. Remember that you must begin taking annual required minimum distributions (RMDs) from tax-deferred retirement plans after you turn 70½ (the first distribution must be

taken no later than April 1 of the year after the year in which you reach age 70½). Failure to take RMDs subjects the funds that should have been withdrawn to a 50 percent federal income tax penalty. Of course, there is also the possibility that you may be able to keep the funds with your former employer, if allowed by your plan. Before you decide which method to take for distributions from a qualified retirement plan, it would be prudent to consult with a professional tax advisor. The information in this article is not intended to be tax or legal advice, and it may not be relied on for the purpose of avoiding any federal tax penalties. Windows to the Soul “Windows to the Soul,” an exhibit currently on display at Huntington Arts Council’s Main Street Petite Gallery, explores the dynamic interplay between the artist and his subject as reflected in portraiture. The diverse creations of more than 25 artists, including oils, watercolors, pencil drawings and sculpture, are featured in the show juried by Kevin W. McEvoy, who is himself an accomplished, award-winning painter who works in oils. Mr. McEvoy, who studied in New York, Italy and Chile, poetically describes the process of portraiture painting as an attempt “to capture the story that someone’s eyes can tell.” It is also “a dialogue,” he says, an exchange between an artist and his subject that has unique ramifications. A portrait is “the marriage of who the artist is, and the identity of the sitter,” Mr. McEvoy said, explaining that, in a very real sense, every portrait painting is a portrait of the artist because the resulting work is infused with the artist’s heart, and spirit. David Jaycox Jr., a Northport resident whose work is featured in the exhibit, said that he based his evocative watercolor, “Verity,” on an old family photograph of a French Canadian relative who immigrated to this country in the late 19th century. “They were loggers and dairy farmers and they battled the untamed land,” Mr. Jaycox said, adding that his portrait of his

74 • village connection • april 2012

ancestor, Lewis and two horses, Jack and Jill, represents the “symbiotic struggle with nature,” and speaks of a gentler time. The man’s “straightforward look” and “faded fedora” convey “a truth and a simplicity” that is sadly lacking from today’s culture, Mr. Jaycox indicated. Denise Franzino, a Huntington artist who specializes in fine art portraiture and who works in the style of the great Impressionists, has two oil paintings, “Contentment” and “Contemplation,” on display. “Contentment,” is a very personal portrait of the artist herself, gazing with great adoration at her dog, who is nestled in her arms. “She loves to be loved and be held,” the Huntington resident said of the dear canine companion who has brought so much joy and happiness to her life. The painting is a composite of several photographs taken in the backyard by Ms. Franzino’s fiancé. In one photograph, Ms. Franzino noticed that a ray of light happened to filter through the trees, illuminating the dog’s face. Ms. Franzino incorporated this element into the portrait because she felt that it literally brought into focus the feelings she sought to convey. The exhibit runs through May 7 at the Main Street Petite Gallery, located at 213 Main Street, Huntington. For information, call (631) 271-8423.

The Bossa Nova Beatniks

Making Good-Time Music For 20 Years And Counting

T

he Bossa Nova Beatniks were born in Greenwich Village in January of 1992. The quartet debuted at the Village Gate on Bleecker Street clad in leather outfits akin to The Police. Now, 20 years later, the band members are still wearing leather (albeit to a lesser degree) and their music has evolved to incorporate more Latin rhythms (bossas, sambas and bongos), but the Beatniks don’t look as if they’ll be slowing down anytime soon. “It’s been 20 years for this particular band, but we’re always looking to do new material and explore new musical avenues,” said Tom Gould, the Beatniks’ lead vocalist who also plays bass and guitar. “I feel we’re just scratching the surface with what we can do as a band, and I hope we can keep doing so for another 20 years.” Since getting together on that fateful January evening, the Beatniks have produced a dozen CDs and have been playing at venues in and around Huntington ever since. This group of local rockers from Huntington (Gould and guitarist Michael Bifulco), Oyster Bay (Tim Stapleton; back-up vocals, guitar and percussion) and Bethpage (drummer George Vahamonde) have played countless shows throughout Long Island and Manhattan. “It’s fantastic to play in and around your home town,” said Gould, who has lived in Huntington since he was four years

84 • village connection • april 2012

old. “You basically give back because obviously growing up around here has contributed greatly to the style and type of music we play. Huntington makes for an interesting mix because of the closeness to New York City combined with the beauty of the shoreline and the harbor. And putting the band in Huntington, I think really gives us the magic to make our music possible and to make it real.” One person who has gotten an up-close-and-personal look into the band’s sound is John Tabacco, a producer and engineer who has mastered the Beatniks’ recordings for close to 20 years. Tabacco explained that the Beatniks used to record with him at Backdoor Studios in Huntington Station and, more recently, in Stony Brook at Suburban Hermit Studios. “Their music is a blend of basic rock ‘n’ roll from the ‘60s morphed with a more contemporary sound that is similar to Paul Simon’s Graceland record,” Tabacco said. “It’s really just rock ‘n’ roll with a cool vibe. It’s very good-time music. It’s not too heavy.

It’s good-time music that’s great to dance to. It’s good party music.” He added, “Fun, fun is they key word for the Bossa Nova Beatniks. Their music is a lot of fun.” Fred Burns, a local poet and fan of the band for close to 20 years, said he finds the music of the Bossa Nova Beatniks to be unique, above all else. “I enjoy the natural, original sound of the Bossa Nova Beatniks,” Burns said. “It’s a mix of jazz, calypso and rock ‘n’ roll, but it’s their own sound. Even though it’s a combination of a lot of different types of music, it’s original and unique music. It’s real and honest. The music seems like it comes from the heart. There’s no one else around that sounds like them.” Burns added that one thing that attracts him to their music is the honesty of the songs of the Bossa Nova Beatniks. “The words to the songs are about real people, real events and feelings. In this day and age that’s kind of hard

to find, but that’s what I get from them. Tom’s not going for mainstream; he’s going for what comes from himself. That I admire a great deal.” Gould confirmed that the Beatniks aren’t in the music business to make mainstream music lovers happy. “Creatively we’re doing our own thing, playing and having a great time,” Gould said. “One of the advantages to not being in the whole record company, corporate music world is that we don’t answer to anybody else. If we want to make music, we make music. As long as it’s artistically satisfying, that’s all that matters to us. And we are extremely artistically satisfied and continue to have great experiences playing music.” But Gould said no matter what kind of music the Bossa Nova Beatniks are making that he knows someone, somewhere is enjoying it. “Now with Internet and Facebook, YouTube and iTunes, we have people all over the world that are getting to enjoy our music,” Gould said. “People are downloading our songs every day. Somewhere, right now, someone is downloading a Bossa Nova Beatniks song.”

Paying it Forward Local Leukemia Survivor Kicks-Off a Flurry of Fundraisers in a Race to Raise $100,000

BY DANIELLE KRAESE At 23-years-old, Erin Zammett Ruddy would have been the envy of any fresh-faced college graduate—she had a job working for Glamour, an apartment in New York City, a great boyfriend, and a vibrant social life. But on a day that would change everything, a routine doctor’s visit revealed that she also had cancer. Today, the devastation of that harrowing development has become a distant memory for Ruddy as she celebrates 10 years of being cancer-free. Having been nominated for Woman of the Year by The New York City Chapter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), she now finds herself entrenched in a fury of fundraising. Being a nominee comes with the lofty task of partaking in a 10-week competition to raise as much money as possible for the LLS—a fitting way to commemorate her milestone. Ruddy has set the ambitious aspiration of raising $100,000 over the course of the competition, which spans from March 8 to May 17. “It’s for an amazing cause, and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has been a huge part of my life over the past ten years,” Ruddy said. The LLS was responsible for funding the development of a miracle drug that played a critical role in her recovery. In November of 2001, Ruddy was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, a slow-developing cancer of the blood cells that gave her as few as five years to live if she didn’t pursue any treatment. But shortly before her diagnosis, the FDA approved the use of Gleevec, a tiny orange pill that held the hefty promise of the healthy life she once knew. In addition to being effective, the drug did not produce debilitating side effects like those experienced during chemotherapy. Ruddy was able to fend off her cancer without spending a single night in a hospital. “I got to keep my job, I got to still go out with my friends, still work out—all while fighting cancer,” she said. “It sort of changed the idea of cancer treatment.” After about 18 months, Ruddy received the long-awaited news that her cancer was in remission. But the celebration was shortlived as her sister, Melissa Zammett Gonzalez, then 27, received news of her own that same day: the troublesome lump that had been lingering in her neck was lymphoma. The surreal sequence of events was almost too much for their family to process. “Honestly, we felt like we were on a cruel version of candid camera,” Ruddy said.

As if the burden of battling cancer was not enough, Gonzalez was also seven months pregnant. Unlike with her sister’s case, there was no miracle medicine for her to take. Her treatment would require inducing an early labor so she could begin aggressive chemotherapy. For Gonzalez, the journey toward recovery was not a simple one—hers involved a heartwrenching relapse and subsequent stem cell transplant. But seven years later, she is relishing in the same success as her sister and helping in her money-raising mission. “You can’t just feel sorry for yourself—you have to eventually move on,” Ruddy said. Together, the two sisters have worked to put together a diverse mix of fundraisers, including a youth soccer clinic, yoga classes, a promotion by Huntington wine and liquor spot, Bottles and Cases, and even a possible restaurant collaboration that would entail signature drinks for the cause. On April 4, Huntington’s high-end clothing shop, Rexer-Parkes, will host an evening shopping excursion. Attendees will be able to partake in raffles, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and the alleviating of shopper’s remorse thanks to the fact that 15 % of the day’s sales will be donated to the campaign. On April 30, Honu Kitchen & Cocktails will serve as the scene for food, drinks, dancing, and a performance by the 10man a cappella group, “Straight No Chaser.” A silent auction will give guests the chance to win coveted prices that include beauty products, spa treatments, golf outing packages, a Michele watch, Michael Kors items, and a trip to New Orleans. “What’s interesting working on this campaign is looking back at what we went through, because you forget,” said Ruddy. “We’re fortunate enough that we can forget.” On May 17, a culmination of the two sisters’ efforts will take place at the competition’s grand finale at Capitale in New York City, where the Man and Woman of the Year will be announced. But as Ruddy puts it, regardless of whether or not she wins, cancer still loses, and that’s the important part. “We’re lucky enough to have survived these cancers, and we’re not just surviving but thriving,” she said. “I hope other people will see how important it is to give back” For more information on upcoming events or how to donate visit: www.erinzammettruddy.com

A Slice of Paradise in Spain A horticultural journey through time

If you ever want to “Experience a Garden” and become inspired by its magic and designs, then one place to visit is the Gardens of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. You may want to put it on the top of your ‘destinations to visit’ list, since it’s an experience that you’ll remember for a lifetime. If the opportunity does not arise, then at least you can be aware of the awesome wonder that truly combines ‘Old World’ charm with ‘New World’ culture. Though many of the plants used are grown in warmer climates, the concepts are still amazing to see. Since it is one of the finest gardens in Europe, I wanted to share its magnificence with those readers who can appreciate the splendor of the Old World influence. It may be to just implement bits and pieces of ideas that you could use to create something for your own landscape or patio planters.

Adding some of that flavor to your own backyard is one way to keep the history alive. Maybe you even considered having a small formal garden with some Spanish influence. The water gardens, that are so prevalent throughout the Alhambra, are enough to inspire even a novice gardener into the realm of trickling fountains and ponds. It’s a magical place that you just do not want to leave, ever! The sunset is a sight to behold as it dips into the mountains behind the walls of the ancient fortress. Just to give a brief history, the Alhambra is a walled in “city within a city” high atop Granada’s beautiful setting within the Sierra Nevada Mountains in southern Spain known as Andalucia. The Alhambra means ‘red or crimson castle’, named so for the color of the walls and towers surrounding the fortress known as an alcazar.

village connection • april 2012 • 91

The New York Botanical Gardens director was so impressed by these gardens in Granada that they set up some of their own theme gardens last summer in the style of the Alhambra gardens. It was a great place to stroll through on a lazy summer weekend where you could get a “little taste of Spain” in the middle of the Bronx.

The gardens of the Alhambra are called the Generalife Gardens which means “Garden of Paradise” in Arabic. These gardens, that were partially completed in 1319, originally started out as part of an agricultural estate to be used as vegetable gardens and an orchard. With Moorish influence and architecture, it is one of the oldest gardens in the world. The Alhambra Palace is located within the fortress and was built by the Moors several years after the original gardens were started. The present day gardens were added on in the 1930’s

and completed 20 years later. The Rose and Cypress Garden were the first additions to these later gardens. The Pergola Garden provides a view of the palace and the city of Granada below. The North African Garden is one of the most tranquil gardens where you can sit and relax for hours. The Cypress Patio of the Sultan includes a Renaissance Fountain and is lined with impressive myrtles, oleanders and roses. There is a water stairway called The Staircase of The Lions that leads to the upper gardens. The peaceful sound of water is everywhere and the serenity that it brings follows you throughout, making you feel as though you’re walking around in a beautiful dream. One thing I can remember most are the tall slender cypresses that have been there for centuries. They are so stately in their appearance and definitive to the landscape. The impressive balustrades, towers and archways are all a part of the amazing architecture which captures your interest everywhere you go. The oleander promenade is a sight to see, especially when they are in bloom, and a great place to take refuge from the hot summer heat. An amphitheater, which was added in 1952, provides entertainment such as plays and festivals. Flamenco dancers perform on summer evenings where the dance has been a huge part of the Spanish culture for centuries. I think many of the visitors after returning home from the Alhambra gardens try to replicate one small detail that they have seen there. It is one way to have a constant reminder of stepping back in time to a magical place and to create your own little slice of paradise.

Wine

Whites for Ham, Reds for Lamb There are plenty of early spring foods to enjoy this month that lend themselves to great wine pairings for when your family gets together.

Baked Ham? I'd try a slightly sweet Riesling with ham. Riesling paired with a salty, slightly sweet ham can be one of those terrific matches on your grateful taste buds. If using brown sugar in the ham recipe, you can go a little drier on the Riesling or try a sauvignon blanc. Especially good are the New Zealand sauvignon blancs with their bursting citrus flavors.

Easter Lamb? Juicy, sweet lamb with rose-pink flesh and pearly white fat is in its prime. Choose mid-weight reds to complement and not overwhelm the sweet, tender meat. Try a pinot noir. Pinots are usually balanced with plum and blackberry fruit. They are refreshing and often have intriguing hints of wild herbs and spices. Lastly, rosemary, which is often used in lamb recipes is a VERY “red-wine friendly” herb.

the delicate flavor of egg and sauces.

Want to try something different? Eat and drink pink this Easter. Pair a delicious rose poached wild salmon and hollandaise with a slightly fruit forward rose wine. Wines from Spain are really being discovered now. Great roses from Spain fit the bill perfectly. A new Rose favorite of mine is Carlos Serres Tempranillo/Garnacha rose. It offers seductive raspberry and red berry scents with enough acidity to cut through the rich sauce without overpowering the earthy nuances of the fish. Fort Salonga Wine and Spirits carries this wine, or ask for it anywhere. Don’t forget seasonal vegetables-fresh carrots and roast potatoes are a must with tender spring greens! Cheers, and enjoy your spring!

Got Leftovers? Chardonnay goes great with eggs. Try an unoaked style of chardonnay with these recipes. You don’t want oak to overshadow

Left Hand Brewing Co. Nitro Milk Stout Left Hand Brewing is the first craft brewer in the United States to release a nitro beer in a bottle. Milk Stout Nitro pours like a draft beer, complete with a thick, billowy head and bubbles that cascade up from the bottom, similar to the way that bars are able to pour Guinness drafts with special taps. But instead of using a device known as a "widget" to recreate that effect in the bottle, Left Hand figured out another way to gas its beer with a blend of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. How Left Hand did it is a secret. "We WWWthought about taking out a patent on that process," says Chris Lennert, vice president of operations for the Longmont-based brewery. "But then our process would become public and other people would be able to figure it out." All he'll say is that the gasses are added throughout the process, "from the filtration to the fermentation to the packaging." Guinness was the first brewer to sell nitro beers in a bottle, incorporating a gas-producing widget that would activate when the bottle was opened and create the signature fluffy head on the beer. Since its introduction, the brewery figured out how to inject C02 and nitrogen into the beer itself. Guinness still sells cans with the widgets, however. The key to making the Milk Stout Nitro work is pouring it hard and not tilting the glass. The point is to release the nitrogen. And in case drinkers have trouble figuring that out, the brewery added a QR code to its striking label that allows people to go straight to a video that shows them how pour. This is just one of more than 2,000 brands of beer in stock at Shoreline Beverage
