Concrete Pavers Lend Curb Appeal to Steps, Staircases and Stoops Most homeowners and real estate professionals would agree that the walk-up to a home should be inviting, not forbidding. Making sure that address numbers are in place and polished, the front door and gutters have a fresh coat of paint, and placing a few embellishments like a seasonal wreath, an attractive welcome mat and a potted plant are among the most favored preferences. But what about the staircase and front stoop? Because they are usually the most prominent structure to be encountered as someone walks toward the front entrance, front steps can make a positive first impression or detract from everything else that is done to augment the curb appeal of a home. Front stoops are part of the landscape of American homes. In large cities and small towns, they welcome visitors and present a spot that leads up to the front door for neighbors to chat. The term stoop dates back to the Dutch word “stoep”, while the American stoop (aka staircase and landing) was first identified in the neighborhoods of the Hudson River Valley and New Amsterdam. Today these entryways grace inner city brownstones, suburban homes and rural farmhouses. Personalization is as diverse as the personalities of the home’s residents. The design/build of one can be as complex and costly as one chooses to make it. The selection of materials ranges from lumber, cement block, brick and bluestone to modern
day hardscape products such as concrete pavers, manufactured wallstones and cast stone steps. The later offer certain advantages over the others — ease of installation, structural durability, stylish options and variety of colors that can be more likely to match or coordinate with inherent characteristics of the home as well as any adjoining, interlocking paver walkways. Hardscape product manufacturers such as Cambridge offer products especially suited for steps, staircases and landings. Concrete pavers are slip-resistant and, due to a low absorption of moisture, are unaffected by frost and deicing salts. Staircase Filler Block can be used along with other wall products from Cambridge such as MaytRx® 6-inch and or Stretcher Stone in the building of a staircase and landing. As a result, a set of steps can be built without leveling and compacting the center of each layer. Because there will be less cleanup, your contractor will save time in addition to costs associated with the transportation of bulk stone and the compaction of aggregate that is typically used to fill in the void in the center of steps and a porch. Cambridge Pavingstones are available in an array of colors, shapes and textures for the top surface of the landing and Cambridge Large Caps or Bullnose pavers are ideal choices for the treads. Consider making the landing large enough to
villageconnentionmagazine.com • 21
accommodate a functional bench or sculpture and be constructed in a dimension that relates proportionately to the size of the home. A trained and experienced contractor can help with determining the best dimensions and configuration for you. Interesting finishing touches can be added such as decorative columns, which can be custom designed or purchased fully assembled and in prepackaged kits along with various capping options. If your front yard is sloped, a gradual assent can be accomplished with two or more staircase landings connected by straight, angled or winding paver walkways. Staircases made of pavers and wallstones also work well at the back door and next to patio door sliders. This option combines form and function when making the transition to a small patio, outdoor room, pool deck or garden path that requires one or more steps down. All of the aforementioned minutia speaks to a larger truth. According to veteran real estate agent for Weichert, Realtors Michael Machinski, exterior curb appeal is just as important, if not more important, than interior curb appeal. “When a buyer drives up to your house and gets excited by what he or she sees,” explained Machinski, “he or
she will be anxious to cross over that threshold to see what’s inside.” Marketing a home is all about psychology; getting into the mind of the buyer and creating that “WOW factor”. Homeowners will find it encouraging knowing that Cambridge offers the added value of a fully-transferrable lifetime warranty if and when it comes time to sell your home.
Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc. He is one of the founders and a current board member of the Interlocking Pavement Institute. Organized in 1993, ICPI is the North American trade association representing the interlocking concrete paver industry and considered by peer associations around the world as the leader in development and dissemination of technical information for design professionals and contractors. Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.

The Benefits of Exercising During Pregnancy
I get many questions from people who are looking to become pregnant or who are pregnant and want to continue exercising. You must always speak with your doctor first to see what his/her recommendations are before you start or continue with your exercise program. Here are some general guidelines for exercising during your pregnancy along with how it may be beneficial to both mother and baby!! as per www.AmericanPregnancy.org www.WebMD.com) If you are already exercising then you should be able to continue with what you are doing to some level. If you’re having a normal low risk pregnancy then is has not been shown that pregnancy would increase your risk of miscarriage. During your workouts you want to do the following: 1. Listen to your Body. If you feel “off ” at all, stop exercising and see your doctor. 2. Take water breaks often 3. I see many doctors still recommend not getting your heart rate over 140 bpm however there are more doctors who are focusing on the rate of perceived exertion ( how hard you are working) rather than your heart rate. 4. Avoid climbing exercises like climbing ropes and going across the monkey bars 5. When you are in your 2nd and 3rd trimesters avoid lying on your back as it can cause decreased blood flow to the baby. 6. Speak with your doctor concerning weight training and get a guideline on the maximum you should be lifting 7. Warm up properly and cool down and stretch properly 8. Let your trainer know that you are pregnant before starting the workout. 9. Let your trainer know if you are not feeling well or if any exercises are causing you discomfort. Here are some possible benefits to mom and

baby: 1. Shorter labor time, fewer medical interventions during labor and increased sustained energy during labor. 2. Stronger abdominals can aid in an easier delivery 3. Stronger abdominals can also help you to maintain proper posture which is important at all times especially after you give birth and are lifting your child numerous times each day. 4. Exercise my help increase the chances of your baby being born leaner with a healthy organ and circumference size. 5. Better quality sleep 6. Can increase mom’s energy level 7. Helps improve your mood 8. It is recommended to not gain more than 2535 pounds and exercise can help manage gaining too much weight. If there was ever a time to hire a personal fitness coach, during your pregnancy would be the time. If you are not working with a fitness coach then make sure you communicate with the staff at whatever fitness facility you are attending. And again always work directly with your doctor before exercising and continue to work with him/ her throughout your entire pregnancy. A Painter’s Paradise Art Talk about Neill Slaughter’s Fulbright Fellowship to India ART LEAGUE OF LONG ISLAND SATURDAY, APRIL 18 AT 2 PM Artist Neill Slaughter comes to the Art League of Long Island to discuss his experiences during his Fulbright Fellowship to India in 1992. In what Slaughter terms “an intense, life-changing experience” he will share his observations of the people of India, their culture, landscape and architecture and show samples of paintings and drawings from his “Images of India” series. Slaughter states, “Although traveling in India or Africa is both physically and mentally demanding, India is the most visually stimulating place I have ever visited. It is a “painter’s paradise.” To explore India is to discover one’s relationship with not only the natural, physically challenging environment, but also an amazingly diverse and vastly different culture that is so exotic compared to middle-class America. During his 36 years of teaching, Professor Slaughter has spent a considerable amount of time traveling throughout the world to teach, conduct research and create art. His extensive travels have influenced what he paints, which often reflect the social conditions of his surroundings. Among the awards and honors Professor Slaughter has received are a Ford Foundation Fellowship (1977-78), a Scottish Arts Council Grant (1980), an LMU Research Grant to Africa (1988) and a Fulbright Fellowship to India (1992).
Seance
To Have and To Have Not
Neill Slaughter has had 30 solo exhibits of his drawings and paintings since 1978 and participated in more than 75 national and international group exhibitions. His art has been reviewed by leading newspapers as well as magazines, and his work is in public and private collections throughout the world. Space is limited, register early to ensure a spot. ZZ At The NYCB: AOK Servin' Up The Blue BBQ It was rather refreshing, quite frankly. All right, it was four new songs in an 80 minute set, not exactly a radical overhaul, but after a decade of ZZ Tops set being basically a color-by-numbers greatest hits parade, a near-capacity house seemed to relish some new wrinkles from the 45-year-old band. Maybe its guitarist Billy Gibbons increasing solo work (he has a solo album due this summer that is said to be long on the Cuban jazz), maybe it was a fire re-lit with ZZs new album in 2012, La Futura, but there was something fresh about this evenings set. Ripping into their trademark opener, “Got Me Under Pressure,” that little ole band from Texas rolled through their standard opening segues of “Waitin For The Bus” and “Jesus Just Left Chicago” before pausing for initial greetings. Seeming a lot more chatty and in the moment than they have been in years, the vibe was more relaxed that it has been in years. They next launched into the lead single from La Futura, “I Gotsta Get Paid,” before airing out some larger than life string-bending on their pulverizing “Pin Cushion.” With bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard laying down their nasty, clockwork rhythms, Top was kicking it into second gear. Playing some area dates to make up for cancelled dated on their tandem tour with Jeff Beck last year (Dusty Hill was injured in a fall), ZZ worked other new tracks, “Flyin High” and “Chartreuse” into the hit heavy set, which naturally included “Give Me All Your Lovin,” “Cheap Sunglasses,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs” and “Im Bad Im Nationwide.” They also covered their obligatory slow blues turn with “Catfish Blues,” a change of pace from usual set faves, “Fool For Your Stockings” and “2000 Blues.” By the time they wrapped up with their traditional encore medley of “La Grange” and “Tush,” Gibbons had once again remind34 villagewhy connection • april 2015 ed a•crowd he is a totally unique player in tone and
phrasing and Beard and Hill put an exclamation point on it with a wall of sound. Opening the show and touting a plethora of homemade instruments was the Ben Miller Band. Between Miller and his two cohorts, Scott Leeper and Doug Dicharry, the Joplin, Missouri trio two-stepped their way through a 35 minute set of originals that fused rock, funk, backwoods blues and jazz and moonshine. They had the crowd roaring their approval on both originals such as “Get Right Church,” “Follow You Down” and covers like “St. James Infirmary.” Their turbo-charged mountain music was a most unique choice to get the room a-rockin. While ZZ Top and the Ben Miller Band added up to a dynamic evening, for the hardcore ZZ follower, it would be nice to see them take a cue from Yes or Rush and do “An Evening With.” With 15 studio albums, a remarkable catalogue full of old school blues and great experimentation with tones and style changes, theres a lot of ZZ catalogue that has been lost to the ages (nothing from 1st album, Rio Grande Mud, El Loco, Tejas, XXX, Mescalero, Rhythmeen or Recycler made the set), it would be easy to fill out a two-hour show (with an intermission) and do something unforgettable. That would make a helluva 50th anniversary tour, but then again...why wait? Theres never a better time to do something new than the present and ZZ made it clear theyre aware of it this night. Zebra: Forty Years Of Rockin' Rolls into NYCB Theatre Photo by Mark Schoen
“Realistically,” says Zebra frontman Randy Jackson late in the interview, “3 piece bands tend to stay together...ZZ Top, Rush...even though Rush aren't the original three. It becomes like family and you learn to accept everyone's contributions and learn that people aren't going to change. We're not too different philosophically and we're at the point that we've had fights but we can't even remember what they were about. It's like family.” If only staying together for 40 years was as easy for everyone. On Thursday, April 9, Zebra celebrates 40 years of rockin' with a very special show at NYCB Theatre at Westbury, no small accomplishment for a New Orleans band that was adopted by Long Island and became one of their all-time favorite sons. It all seems like it happened so easily, it always does. Hardly the case, as Jackson explains as the interview untracks. ”It was LA or NY, we wanted to go after a record deal,” he begins, “and the Good Rats played down in New Orleans. Joe

We were back and forth, we weren't making enough or gigging enough to survive, but we brought money with us. We'd go back to New Orleans to make money to keep going.” Eventually, they carved out a reputation and started headlining places like Hammerhead's and Mad Hatter. “It was definitely a unique time, lot of great bands, the drinking age was 18,” remembers Jackson, “the climate was right.” In the early days, Zebra had made their reputation covering things bands like Deep Purple, BTO, David Bowie, Robin Trower, but they built a rep on the Island for their Led Zeppelin... that and sneaking in originals. “We used to sneak our originals in to the set without even mentioning them because New Jersey club owners didn't want us doing originals,” laughs Jackson as he thinks back, “people would come up and say they liked a song but couldn't

CONFIRM U.S. TOUR The glam rock band Steel Panther have announced a headlining U.S. tour on the heels of their uber-successful UK run this spring. The “17 Girls in a Row” singers are set to open Orlando, FL on Tuesday, May 7th at The Beacham Theatre. The entire list of tour dates can be found below and tickets and VIP packages are now on sale via LiveNation.com. Steel Panther returns to the states after bringing their raucous show to UK audiences, selling out shows in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Wolverhampton, and Leicester. The music world was rocked when a baby was born at Wembley Arena during the bands sold out headlining performance. “Im 60% sure its not one of ours” said Michael Starr, the bands lead singer. “Were so proud to announce the first Panther being born into captivity,” lead guitarist Satchel added. Hailing from Los Angeles, the epicenter for rock n roll in all its debauchery and glamour, Steel Panther have established themselves as the worlds premier party band, melding hard rock virtuosity with parody and criminally good looks. With three full-length albums, touring across the world, platinum-level You Tube status and high-profile television appearances such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, Larry King Now, and FOX NFL Sunday, the band is touring in support of their latest effort, All You Can Eat (Open E Records via Kobalt Label Services). Released in April, 2014 to rave reviews the album bowed at #24 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart; which also garnered the band their third consecutive #1 album on the Top Current Comedy chart. Check out their latest music video for “Pussywhipped” HERE. Of All You Can Eat, Rolling Stone avowed, “Theres a reason Steel Panther have transcended their origins as a covers band playing the Sunset Strip”, while Metal Sucks declared, “Steel Panthers concept is genius… their songwriting is…preposterously snappy – and relatable.” Click HERE to check out the music video for “The Burden Of Being Wonderful.” Steel Panther has been joined on stage by such musical icons as Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Paul Stanley of KISS, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Billy Ray Cyrus, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Tom Morello of Rage Against

The Legends of Sweet Hollow Road Sweet Hollow Road is located in the West Hills area of Huntington, and is surrounded by woods, a park, a cemetery and residential homes. Throughout the years, all sorts of legends and hideous tales have been reported. One of the most well-known is the story of the Lady in White, also known as Mary. It is said that Mary was a patient at a hospital that was located near the crossing at Mount Misery Road in the mid-1850’s. The hospital mysteriously burned down, and many people had died. After the rebuilding, it supposedly was torched by an insane woman and burned to the ground again. It is rumored that moans, screams and cries for help can be heard, and that small burning specters can be seen. Other stories claim that Mary was pushed out of a car on Sweet Hollow Road by a jealous boyfriend and was killed by an oncoming car. An even earlier story from the late 1600’s, talks about Mary being a witch who was hung and buried in the area. The “veiled lady in white” has been seen wandering the road and the woods, along with a lady in red, a gypsy, who roams the area. A man in a checkered shirt is also said to walk the woods at night, carrying an ax in his hand. Another story speaks of a slain police officer who stops cars along the road. He seems normal until he turns around and has blood on his uniform, and the back of his head is missing. An officer is said to have died in the area while on duty. When and if this ever happened, no one seems to know for sure.
42 • village connection • april 2015
Non-human ghosts are also said to haunt Sweet Hollow Road and include a black Labrador, a ghostly horse and a mysterious doglike creature called the “Black Dog of Misery rumored to be “a harbinger of death.” One of the most recent ghost stories is about several teenagers who hung themselves from the Northern State Parkway overpass in the 1970’s. If you honk your car’s horn three times before going under the overpass, it is said the ghostly boys will jump in front of your car. Finally, there is the story of a thirteen-year old girl who was beaten and strangled in 1976. Her murdered body was found along the road. Supposedly the killer was never found, and the case remains unsolved.
Six-time, award winning author Kerriann Flanagan Brosky, best known for her Ghosts of Long Island books, has been featured in a number of publications, and has appeared on radio and television. South Shore Comedy Night: The Laughs Won't Be Intimate For Long Debbie & Ted Plezia have been veterans on the Long Island Theater circuit for years, the former as both actress and director, the latter as actor and magician. Add theatre-owners to the list with their South Shore Theatre Experience venue on Montauk Ave. in Lindenhurst. As an any saavy theater manager will tell you, success lies in diversity and, in addition to plays, magic shows and acting classes, you can add stand-up to their list of quality entertainment, which is exactly what THEY did on March 7. Hosted by the likeable and breezy Alan Scott, who kept the comics coming up and down at a well-paced clip, the night started off with Scott grabbing laughs talking about his $250 donation for a stripper that others might simply call a police ticket. Brooke Arnold, a NYC stand-up, followed with a raunchy set that pushed the envelope but netted consistent laughs with stories about being interviewed by reality shows (She sees herself “in prison” when asked how she projects herself 5 years up the road), her less than ideal education (“Second grade dropout”) and a brother who was inspired by L. Ron Hubbard. Her Texas-New York culture clash makes for some priceless moments. Geoff Kole rolled out next, long a familiar face to Island comedy fans. The Dix Hills-raised, Manhattan native connected for good laughter on subjects such as Nicky Minaj lyrics, cell phones, cell phones and customer service reps. Kathy Arnold took the show through the first half by sharing hemorrhoid anxieties in her opening remarks before blasting Geoff Kole into pet peeves like car stick figures (“A pedophile's dream”), college kids, alcohol enemas and pot-smoking friends. Her sarcastic delivery never gets unpleasant or unlikeable and she scored well with the full house. Rolling out the 44 • village connection • april 2015 second half
was LA West, who lamented his physical appearance to Fresh Prince character Carleton and height issues. He also talk about time in the service as well as Sesame street characters. At this stage, he needs work on his material but, as is, his sheer likeability and presKathy Arnold
ence wins people over. Maleta Apogo was up next and bringin' it with plenty of sass. Originally from Philadelphia, she aired it out about hating winter, being a school teacher and some funny business about senior homes. Possessing strong time and great poise, she drives her material home like a well-trained boxer. Circuit veteran Mike Keegan put the lid on the fast -paced 100 minute show about his indifference towards gym memberships, Kardashian obsessions and his girlfriend's concerns about her appearance (She: “Would you still love me if I gained wait?” He: “Yes...I'd miss you, but I'd still love you.”). The right guy was in the closer's spot, to be sure. South Shore Theatre experience is a nice, intimate, smaller venue with a great deal to offer. There's no drink minimums but there is plenty of fun waiting for you. You can always dot.com it for more information, but you certainly couldn't miss just picking a weekend night and taking a ride out on a whim.

We Provide Support for Those Seeking an Alternative Approach to Healing
Maria’Z Hope Foundation Inc was founded in 2012 and named for Maria Zuccala-Burke who lived with Stage IV Breast cancer which matastisized to her bones for eight years. Who was Maria? Her sister, Rita Zuccala-Mahoney describes her: “My sister was the strongest person I know. She was always helping people in the community whether it was someone living with cancer or helping families in need. A divorced mother of three, a PTA President and a Girl Scout Leader for 20 years, she still found the time to orchestrate gift card collections for those in need!” Forty Five Thousand dollars had been raised to send Maria for an alternative treatment that was not covered by insurance after doctors told her that there were no other treatments for her. At fifty thousand dollars a month, Maria went to the Century Wellness Clinic in Reno, Nevada. When she came back from that treatment, her overall quality of life was amazing. This foundation’s mission is to “provide emotional, financial and educational support for individuals living with life-threatening illnesses who seek alternative treatment not covered. Examples of Complementary Medicine include: acupuncture, nutrition, chiropractic care, yoga, massage and Reiki. This all volunteer organization with no paid employees counts on donations from the community, corporations and volunteers to keep programs for participants going.
