Cover Artist Michael Krasowitz Michael is a painter and printmaker living here in Huntington. He began his career in photography and was introduced to printmaking as an extension to his photo imagery. He began drawing as a way to react to the printmaking medium of etching in a more direct way. He began to explore his imagination and subconscious more spontaneously through a process called “automatic drawing, a concept created by the Surrealist movement. After many years of experimenting in black and white, Michael began working in oil on canvas to develop his work in color. He also studied drawing from the figure to enhance his skills and incorporate figuration into his work. He also studied historic processes, including Fresco, egg Tempera, and under painting to develop his vision of creating depth and volume in his work. Michaels work deals with spontaneous creation as a way to express universal truths. He relates his work to a search for Jungian Archetypes and believes there is an organic method to expressing these ideas. Michaels work can be seen at www.krasowitz.com. Michael also draws on clothing and this work can be seen at www.krasowitzclothing.com. He can be reached at krasowitz. gmail.com. Currently his work can be seen at KidzHitz, which is located on Main Street in town.

Spa Adriana & Aveda Celebrate Earth Month

Catwalk for Water - Benefitting Clean Ocean Action

cast away Spa Adriana, Aveda's award-winning lifestyle salon and spa, showed how beautiful recycling can be at Catwalk for Water, a green-carpet event hosted by Aveda. Catwalk for Water is an annual event promoting clean water awareness in which salons showcase their creativity and technical skills by using trash to create high fashion. Featured looks blend style and sustainability. The event took place on April 10 this year, at The Taj in New York City. This year’s theme was Trashion Fashion. All proceeds from this event benefit Clean Ocean Action, the NY/NJ region’s only full-time ocean advocacy non-profit organization. Since 1984, Clean Ocean Action has been working to protect the marine waters spanning Cape May, NJ to Montauk, NY. Spa Adriana debuted “Cast Away,” a fashion ensemble created from non-biodegradable materials that are all too often cast into the sea. The netting bodice is made of recycled plastic bags

threaded together with fishing net, reminding us that our trash acts as a net that traps fish and other sea wildlife. The gown is haute mermaid, with a body-hugging bodice flaring out in a trash-plastic tail. Colors of the sea are interwoven throughout bringing a sense of fun, playfulness and hope for the future. “Nothing is wasted in developing our ‘Cast Away’ dress. We reeled in materials that anyone could easily find snagged on their line,” said Adriana Vater, co-founder and Creative Director, Spa Adriana. “Spa Adriana has been dedicated to the preservation of the environment since we first opened our doors more than 30 years ago. We are proud to participate in Trashion Fashion with Aveda.” Spa Adriana’s team crafted hair and makeup for “Cast Away” featuring Aveda beauty and haircolor products. For more information, contact Spa Adriana at (631) 351-1555. Photos copyright John S. Vater

Africa

is amazing. It is another place that is hard to understand unless you have experienced it, but is worth reading about. My first trip to Africa was to southern Africa and included visits to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. While on that trip I was told by my guide that I would be infected with the Africa “virus and I most certainly was. Please do not panic, it is only contagious if you visit Africa and yearn to go back. The virus makes you eat, sleep, dream and breathe Africa until you can return and get infected again and return home to eat,

sleep, dream and breathe about Africa all over again. There is no single cure that I know of except to keep going back and I am fortunate enough to be headed back to Tanzania in July! The best part about being in Africa is its beauty and freedom. It is limitless. You gain a sense of serenity that for most people is unheard of. One of my favorite days involved standing out of the top of my game drive vehicle just listening to the sounds of flamingos. It was spectacular. I felt amazing. If someone took a picture of me at that particular moment it would have expressed pure bliss.

Africa is huge and I want to see it all. I am blessed to have visited two different regions, but I need to see more. There are so many unique features about being in Africa. One of the best includes enjoying game drives and exploring the wilderness. During my East African expeditions in Kenya I spent time in Masai Mara which is a magnificent landscape of open plains bisected by the Mara River and its tributaries and punctuated by marshes and forests. This 650 square kilometer reserve supports

Go to Africa, go on safaris, meet local people and you will gain a calmness in your existence. the highest density of game to be seen anywhere considering its size. During the seasonal migrations, Masai Mara is home to up to a million wildebeest and an equally impressive number of zebra that move into the area from neighboring Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The reserve is home to all the “big five and it is also possible to observe baboon, eland, ostrich, bat- eared fox, jackal, cheetah, and the rivers are abound with hippos and crocodiles. In addition to all of this they are also noted for their abundance of lions. My life could not get better until the morning I was told grab your camera, binoculars and only a backpack! For what? To take to the sky over herds of wildlife in the Masai Mara game reserve flying in a hot air balloon

safari. Can you say amazing? I woke up very early, met my driver and in the cold and dark morning began my voyage to the site where I would meet the hot air balloon. What an experience. It was my first time in a hot air balloon. The balloon can soar over the most inaccessible and undisturbed parts of the reserve. I remember seeing a vulture’s nest and could not believe the size of it. Also, being above the terrain you see the animals from a unique perspective above them. It was unreal. I did not think my trip could get much better until I flew from Kenya to Tanzania and began my journey in Tarangire National Park. It is renowned for its abundant birdlife and plentiful big game. It is hard for me to decide what my favorite place in the world is, but I will tell you for years it was easy for me to say Peru until I visited Tanzania. I think I love many places, but Tanzania has a permanent place in my heart. The game drives in Tanzania were one better than the other. I also had the benefit of being with terrific tour guides who were fun, caring and knowledgeable. I think my friends and I might have scared them on some days, but definitely in a good way. Ngorogoro is a world heritage site. Ngorogoro Crater is remnant of an ancient volcano peak and has one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. It was one of my highlights of my trip in East Africa. I remember not wanting to eat dinner because I did not want to come inside and leave the night sky. I never saw a more spectacular night sky. I felt like I was in the stars. If you have ever visited Africa you know all of the emotions that come over you and my voyage was no different. I was happy everyday and feeling honored to be able to see and feel what was in front of me each day. Some people go places and have a different mindset. You have to be like Africa and be limitless. Expect nothing and gain everything. If you go into a game drive with a list of what you want to see you will immediately be disappointed since you are not in a zoo. You are in the wild and need to respect your surroundings. Each morning I would pray and thank God for my experience and also I would envision lions everywhere. I was obsessed with seeing lions and my prayers usually worked. I was fortunate to see every animal and in abundance. Go to Africa, go on safaris, meet local people and you will gain a calmness in your existence.

Jay Nova I have come to know Jay through having seen him perform as a artist on more than one occasion. His stage presence is captivating and very entertaining. His show, Rock N Ink MC, is shares something he and I have in common, the importance of bringing original artists to the listening ears of all who want to hear something new, fresh, and spectacular.  Its out there! It wasn’t until I had seen a few of his “Rock My Kitchen” episodes that he caught my admiration. He is great at everything he does and accomplishes everything with style, precise perfection and most of all passion. To do what he loves and what lives in his artistic soul and share it. I Interviewed Jay and asked him questions, this is how it went.   Spades: Besides your 9 to 5 job what made you venture out to creating your show? Jay: I was called upon by Janet & Vinny Soluri from “The Soluri No Guts No Glory hour” show that they wanted to have me on their show to interview me. After appearing on the show they said I should have my own show! Well 8 weeks later I had premiered Rock N Ink MC doing what I Loved, Music, Tattoos, Tattoo Models and things that bring awareness to people. www.rockninkmc.com Spades: With your experience of  all of the things you have found yourself doing what has motivated you to move forward? Jay: I love creating and sharing things with people. So the Show has pushed me to use the internet and gather an audience worldwide that has motivated me seeing that people are interested in what I do. So I strive to find even better ways to entertain my audience. Spades: What has been the most discouraging? If so what have you done to relinquish or change it? Jay: I’ll tell you I left Mad House TV after 40 Live Shows. I guess I like to take control of the complete production, there were things I couldn’t get done Live. So I went with a real season schedule: Jan, Feb & March 13 Shows & Sept, Oct & Nov 13 Shows. No more

live shows I needed to get time to break down how people watched the show. I found out the most viewers don’t watch for more than 5 minutes unless it’s very interesting. So I cut the show in short segments now. The other thing is I have relocated from New York to Florida and that has cut my show’s Season 2 short. Now in my 3rd Season I’m struggling to make it the quality and production I want it to be now that I’m moving into a house after 6 months in an apartment. So I will do my best to get Season 3 completed with what I have to work with and in January 2016 I will surprise everyone with the funny segments I want to do and get back to “Rock My Kitchen” so putting shows together has been frustrated at this point. Spades: Where is it that you would you like to see yourself with all you have produced and created? Jay: I just want people to look at my shows and enjoy them; I’m even going through the 40 live shows and editing them into short segments so they will get more viewers. I’m hoping that come January I can get “Rock My Kitchen” to Premier Season 1. I only did 2 Rock My Kitchen segments as a goof and people loved it, It Even got Interest from Spike TV. Spades: On a personal note those who know you know you are single those who didn’t are now listening. What is it that you look for in a woman and what kind of relationship would be the ultimate relationship? Jay: Hum.. Well this is like a 2 part answer!..So it is a personal note, “Am I single” this something I have learned with social media to keep my personal life as private as I can unless it’s something I want to express or share with everyone. What I look for in a woman: Intelligence, Honesty, Independent, Communication, Confidence, Spontaneous, Playful & Sensual, & most important Supportive. Oh ya I didn’t mention attractive to my taste. So the Ultimate Relationship would be that perfect

woman to enjoy and spend our life growing together. I will say I have found that Ultimate Woman and maybe one day I’ll share her with you all. But at this time I’m keeping our relationship private till we are ready to expose ourselves. So I do appreciate all of the attention from my fans and we all can fantasize. Spades: Is there any charity or cause you are passionate about or give of your services to (perform for share your music with)? and Why ? Jay: I’m opened to most charities the 2 that are close to my heart are Cancer & Bone Marrow. I have had too many loved ones and friends pass from Cancer and Giving Bone Marrow is such an important thing to give because people have a hard time finding a match to give them a healthy life again. My 2 sons have had Bone Marrow Transplants and we were lucky that their mother was there match. I have done a show in Dec 2014 season #1 with Love Hope Strength Foundation Co founded by Mike Peters from the band The Alarm. (http://lovehopestrength.org) I have hosted many Fundraisers to help get the word out to help the Families and Charities out there. Spades: what is it you want people to see when they look at you and what you are doing ?  Jay: I want people to see the real person I am, "don’t judge the book by its cover”! People judge too quickly. I’m a Leo so I’m a tamed Lion! “Lol”

I want people to see a guy who cares and wants to help others. My show is about getting others noticed it’s not about me. I don’t promote my bands or any personal things on my show, it’s about my audience. Spades: How it is that you raised three beautiful well established children while still holding onto your busy rock producing ventures. Jay: I give credit to my three amazing adult Children. I’m a divorced dad who has custody of his kids. Now they are grown 2 sons 24 & 21 and my daughter 17.My children have busy lives now and give me support and the time to do these things. They look up to me and see a hard working parent doing everything and enjoying life. Spades: Oh one last thing, I had wanted to know how old you were! Jay: Well let’s leave that to everyone’s guessing. I don’t like age it’s a number. I don’t look or feel my age so I’ll leave it at that.

Spades is what they call her she is owner of www.godsearthangels.com a 501c corp who represents some of the most talented original local musicians, photographers, artists with the very best establishments. That truly make a difference in their communities. She shares links to promote the very best for hire or place to be at and a column on her choice with Live magazine readers.

outdoor living • charles h gamarekian

WAYS TO TAKE ENTERTAINING OUT THE BACK DOOR From cozy get-togethers to mega parties, well-appointed outdoor living rooms put the most favored amenities within reach of hosts and their guests. Don’t let the perception of designing and building a stylish, fully featured outdoor living room in a single undertaking put your plans on the back burner. When planning an extensive interior remodeling, homeowners often resort to a sequence of time windows driven by budget or other pre-existing conditions. The renovation may start with a new kitchen and/or bathroom and end up with a great room extension at a later date. The design/build of a functional outdoor space using hardscape materials often follows the same process with surprising continuity if you follow a few steps at the onset. Before you put your plan into speed dial, consider starting smaller with a modestly sized patio that provides ample room for sunbathing, an umbrella table, or whatever suits your more immediate needs. An adjacent area, with a fire pit for instance, can be added in the second year, a full-kitchen the third year, and a pool or spa after that. But good planning is critical to success. For homeowners living on the east coast, the average cost at $140 per sq. ft. to add 200 square feet to an existing indoor room or complete a basement conversion would be $28,000. By comparison, figuring on the high side at $20 per sq. ft., the budget for a new, similarly sized 10-ft. by 20-ft. outdoor room using manufactured hardscape materials, would run only $4,000. The result is having a four-season, outdoor space for entertaining family and friends at 14% of the cost to construct/ renovate that indoor room. Choosing a single-resource supplier with a positive consumer satisfaction record will bring reassurance and optimum results. For example, Cambridge — makers of pavers with ArmorTec® for color consistency made to last, wall systems and conveniences such as outdoor kitchens, pizza ovens, fireplaces and fire pits, pergolas and water features — received the 2016 Best of Houzz Award for customer service. Houzz, a respected online community, offers recommendations concerning home improvement including both interior and landscape design based on client reviews and other factors.

Designing an outdoor space can be made simpler by bringing a digital photo of your property to a Cambridge distributor who can create realistic, computer-generated designs on the spot using Cambridge DesignScape Visualizer™ software. A series of images can be modified to reflect completions of your project in pre-designated phases. Each design will reflect various color-coordinated selections in styles of your choosing. Note that all patio components such as kitchens and bar modules are sold fully assembled by Cambridge or in pre-packaged kits that allow you to bypass higher costs associated with custom designs. Distributor locations can be found at cambridgepavers.com. Ask for a complimentary 100-plus-page outdoor living room guide and the names of certified Cambridge contractors who can offer advice in the planning stages. Discover how multi-season Outdoor Lifestyling™ ideas will fly out the backdoor in first class and arrive with a happy landing right in your own backyard.

Chameleon Vocalist and Entrepreneur Corvaa Releases “Zipper” Single, Tour Dates With An Expansive Range and the Ability to Transcend Genres- One of the Music Industry’s Newest and Brightest Stars Is Gearing Up for a NYC Showcase April 13th and a Live TV Taping May 4th On the Heels of Her New Single Release April, 2016 (New York, NY) -- It takes a great deal to be not only extremely versatile in today’s music industry, but to have the passion, drive and entrepreneurial spirit to take fans by storm, and with her self-titled debut EP and powerful live performances- NY recording artist Corvaa has done just that! Combining genres from pop music to dance, electronica, and house music, she’s able take art and evolve it to suit her unique tone/voice. With her new single “Zipper” OUT NEXT WEEK on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Rhapsody, Google Play and various other online platforms along with two shows coming up Wednesday, April 13th at Astoria’s Melrose Ballroom and Wednesday, May 4th at Revolution Bar & Music Hall in Amityville for a Live TV Taping on Verizon FiOS1’s Rick's Rising Stars; you’ll have your chance to see this creative talent in action! SAMPLE "ZIPPER" ON SOUNDCLOUD HERE: http://www. soundcloud.com/Corvaa/zipper-corvaa Corvaa, the chameleon vocalist, is twenty-eight and a full time entrepreneur. Originally born in Piraeus, Greece she was adopted and raised on Long Island, NY. Re-starting her musical journey in 2013, her initial recordings were all rough, raw, & recorded out of her house through a cell phone. Each time she would sing, the recording was uploaded directly onto Soundcloud. While doing so was a risk, she focused on her talent being showcased vs the quality of the files. Fast forward to present day, and that risk seems to have paid off immensely: with 50,000+ plays on Soundcloud, 10,000+ followers on Instagram & 5,000+ likes on FB, the music industry has taken notice of Corvaa, the artist. As her following continues to grow, the star yearns to put out quality vocals with beats that pack a punch! Her debut EP disc can be heard on Itunes, Spotify, Amazon, Google Play, CD Baby, and tons of other platforms, and in her own words, she’s said of the monumental undertaking "Knowing I have my own disc of music in under a year puts me at a loss for words. I want to take a moment to personally thank each and every fan out there who continues to support & spread the good word. A quote I live by and have taken so literally it's tattooed on me: Believe, for anything is possible." On her quest for stardom Corvaa realized with bold certainty "I want an empire.", and in order to create this empire, she would need the right people around her. It takes any artist the right team to achieve their goals, but what brings it all home is Loyalty, and because of this- Team Corvaa was composed of talented artists that reside around the tri-state area, acting as extended family to the singer. At the head of this team is the talented Mark Johnston, who acts as her business partner. With her music having been supported by Party 105.3 FM, WKRB 90.3, Z88.9, Party 103, Harrah's Pool After Dark, and Sizzahandz of Crooklyn Clan- its reached over 100 countries and is currently featured on MTV's Website: www.mtv.com/artists/corvaa. Her hit single 'In and Out of Love' has been heard around the country in NYC’s Highland

Ballroom, Stage 48 and Tokya, as well as on the West Coast in California’s Heat Ultra Lounge and countless other cities in between! With so much in store for this extraordinary vocalist, entrepreneur, and creative force including her recently released single “Zipper”you won’t want to miss your chance to catch her LIVE Wednesday, April 13th at Astoria’s Melrose Ballroom and Wednesday, May 4th at Revolution Bar & Music Hall in Amityville for a TV Taping of Rick's Rising Stars on Verizon FiOS1!
