Cover Artist
Steve Zolin
Zolin’s artistic recipe includes gestural explorations into cityscapes, abstraction, and curved perspective. His creative experiments are inspired by a belief in the “unstraightness” of reality. Raised in West Orange, NJ, Steve Zolin earned his BFA cum laud in 1994 and won an MFA Fellowship, graduating in 2005. Between degrees he spent nine years in Santa Fe, New Mexico enmeshed in the art scene there. Married to photographer Robin Noble-Zolin, he now resides in Manhattan where he exhibits regularly. See both their work March 7th-9th at the iArt4 booth at Fountain Art Fair during Armory Week. Zolin was a featured solo artist at the (E)merge Art Fair in DC in 2012. His work has also been seen at the 24th International Juried

Show at the Visual Arts Center of NJ, curated by Susan Kismaric of the Museum of Modern Art, NY. Zolin has exhibited widely including New York, Florida, Santa Fe, and Toronto. His most recent installation, sponsored by Chashama and The National Endowment for the Arts, explored space, gesture, and movement, and was entitled “Unstraightness.” Career highlights include a 15’ mural for Senator Joseph Lieberman’s home synagogue in CT and a 35’ musical mural for Santa Fe High School. Zolin has also executed a 60’ backdrop of Emerald City for a theatrical production of the Wizard of Oz, 13’ and 16’ paintings for restaurants in Santa Fe, and three large mobiles for Florida State University. A light snow falls outside my window as I write this month’s publisher’s letter, but my mind is still on thoughts of Spring. It’s only a few weeks away, and like most of my fellow Long Islander’s, I’ve had enough of this winter! I’m also anxious for the new season because we’ve got some exciting things going on at Village Connection as we continue to grow our reach and readership to new villages across the Island. This March issue is now being distributed throughout Huntington Township and Babylon Township and just as soon as we’ve approved the final copy at the printer, we will be heading full force into our new areas as we expand into Islip and Smithtown in time for April. Our advertisers now have the option of reaching the audience that makes the most sense for their business, whether it’s their local community or the towns beyond. People often think of Spring as a time of renewal. Anyone who has seen me in the past couple of weeks knows that I’ve taken that to a personal level as well. While visiting my friend John Vater at Spa Adriana recently, I decided to spruce up for the new season myself and put myself in the hands of Ricchia and Nicole Gomez, hair style and color artists from Spa Adriana, who touched up my gray (just a little) and gave me a new, professional-looking haircut. It was time for a little bit of a change and so far the feedback has been all positive (as soon as people get over the shock of my long locks being cut off) One last thing I wanted to mention for March is that there are lots of great parades going on all over Long Island, including the largest in Huntington Village. Some consider the parades to be the unofficial start of Spring as everyone is excited to get out in their villages and enjoy a fun day with family and friends. We’ve listed a few in this issue for you to choose from. We hope you enjoy our March issue of Village Connection Magazine. I’ll see you in the Village...

Spring’s Fashion And Beauty Report It might still be cold outside but fashionistas and beauty mavens everywhere, the time is upon us to start look at the upcomgin Spring 2014 trends. And, what better place to look then the runways of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week! What a privelage it is to once again be front-and-center at a bevy of shows, from obscure designers like Fashion Shenzhen to mainstays like Falguni and Shane Peacock and Carolina Herrera. So for your convenience, I have compiled a comprehensive report of spring’s hottest looks. One of my favorite designers, Joanna Mastroianni marries fashion and art in colorful harmony. The concept of color theory, patterning, and emergence is shown in her detailed fabric weavings. The designer’s ability to create a coexistence of art and design in her collection is simply amazing. Plus, fashionistas will be happy; her bright and beaming floral patterns this season will save you from having to throw out last season’s floral outfits. Also, inspired by art – the Kinetic art movement to be exact, Carolina Herrera took a cue from the multidimensional optical illusion of geometric abstract paintings to create gowns and flowing skirts by layering geometric motifs on fabrics like chiffon, organza and voile.
Patterns of black and white in thin stripes and spiral designs moved gracefully with the prints in crimson, sienna and smoky umber. The whole collection had a soft color scheme with hues ranging from tea green, porcelain and mauve. There were silk and georgette gowns with embellished necklines, kinetic motif print silk organza skirts, and sleek tops paired with pleated pants. Hair styles were elegant updos and chignons. Make up was kept natural. When you think of Custo Barcelona’s Spring 2014 collection, think chic, contemporary and color. The international designer showcased delicate pieces juxtaposed through a play in subtle transparencies, woven patterns and tribal prints. Custo Barcelona focused on the sophistication of a feminine collection featuring soft exteriors over strong, bold pieces with high waistlines. Prints created and customized specifically by Custo Barcelona range from silk and chiffon to printed leather. The collection color scheme surprisingly ranges from white to black yet include the signature Custo trademark of color in every look. From tribal prints with metallic Lurex to laser cut dresses ranging from hues of pink to blue. CZAR by Cesar Galindo created a highly polished luxury look filled with chartreuse, pale blues, opaque black and vibrant red. The show opened with a soft cornflower blue coat, shown over a body conscious jersey dress. Classic CZAR, this collection mixed impeccable tailoring with luxurious knitwear. The 41-look curated show had something for day and night, with a fluid jersey jumpsuit being a standout look. For their Spring 2014 collection, married designer duo Falguni and Shane Peacock decided to take fashion into the sci-fi future sending glamorous Martians robotically strutting down the runway. They started their show with models in clear space helmets adorned in an embellished sequined cat suit, a deep V-neck printed body suit and plastic transparent light up dress with fire red details. Known for their audacious, theatrical aesthetics and body conscious silhouettes, Falguni and Shane Peacock kept to this tradition for spring 2014. The collection, somewhat similar to past season designs, was full of embellishments; hand beading, feather accents, original prints, and laser cut detailing. The bright colors of the collection were a pleasant surprise from the nude subdued tones of other collections. The colors shimmered and sparkled radiantly on the runway. Vera Wang showcased geometrics in bright and true colors. Headbands kept hair pulled back. Concept Korea had a dark 90’s grunge punk meets gypsy feeling. Hair was teased up and away in big messy top knot buns. The other half of the show featured bold black and white geometric lines with natural make up and sleek long hair with a clean center part. How to Get a Beautiful Butt!
I have learned that both men and women are conscious of their buttock muscles (as well as each others.) Not a day goes by where one of my clients doesn’t mention wanting a more toned and tighter “butt”. The scientific name for you buttock muscles (AKA your butt) is your gluteals. We have 3 gluteal muscles: gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. More importantly, we need to know what actions these muscles do so that we know how to exercise them appropriately. Gluteus Maximus is the largest of the three and works to extend our hip by moving our leg behind our body. Gluteus Medius and Minimus do the same action. The minimus muscle also internally rotates the hip joint, meaning it turns your hip joint (your femur bone located in your thigh) inward toward the middle of your body. The medius muscle externally rotates the hip joint, meaning it turns your hip joint outward away from the middle of your body. Minimus and Medius contract at the same time to keep your leg facing straight ahead for example when you push off of your back leg while walking. So how are we going to work this muscle group to get a lean, tight, strong butt? By doing these exercises 2-3 times per week. You can vary the number of repetitions by using light weights or
18 • village connection • march 2014
no weights and doing higher reps of 30-50. You can use heavier weights and do lower repetitions of 10-20. Or you can do as many as you can for time for example 30 or 60 seconds. Mixing it up and doing these varieties on different days will give you an overall workout for you butt! 1. Squats: You can increase the intensity by jumping up when you return to the upright position. 2. Lunge Walks: Do a lunge forward and bring the back leg to the front leg to move forward. Repeat on the other side and lunge walk around the room. 3. Butt Blasters: Get down on the floor on your knees and forearms. Lift your right leg up in the air with your knee bent and gently lift your leg about 10 degrees past hip level then lower it back down. Repeat on the other side. Always consult with your doctor prior to starting an exercise program and if you experience pain, discomfort, shortness of breath or any symptoms of distress stop exercising and call you doctor immediately. Manhattan Dolls Vocal Swing Trio Long Island veterans of all ages will be honored in a star-spangled show on Sunday, March 16 at 2 pm, when The Manhattan Dolls make their triumphant return to Five Towns College. “Manhattan Dolls Through the Decades at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center” features the popular swing/jazz style female trio, who perform regularly at Manhattan clubs. Originally founded by real USO Girls, the group has performed all over the United States in parades, national television broadcasts, air shows, hospitals for U.S. veterans, VIP dinners, large “hangar dances,” award ceremonies and major jazz and supper clubs. They have been featured on BBC Radio London, Fox and Friends, LX4NY, The Tucson Morning Blend and The Rachael Ray Show to name just a few. The women have also appeared on stage with top-name acts and have just returned from successful bookings on both the Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II cruise ships. The group is known for retrospective performances recreating specific periods of the classic Jazz era, ‘50s and ‘60s “Rockin’ with the Dolls,” and an “All Dolled-Up Roaring ‘20s” review. “Manhattan Dolls Through The Decades” is a rousing Best of the Best of all their shows. They regularly perform to sell-out crowds in Manhattan who come for the high energy, incredible harmonies and pure nostalgia (comparisons to the iconic Andrews Sisters is inevitable). Long Island fans will only
have to go as far as Dix Hills to see this critically-acclaimed show that will take its audience on a musical trip through the decades in tribute to Long Island Veterans. “We are so thrilled that ‘The Dolls’ are making their way back to our stage right here in Dix Hills,” said Sandy Hinden, Executive Director of the Center. “Their last two shows at DHPAC were among the most well-received we have offered. The group truly is in high demand worldwide and they have been busy touring the US and abroad. This is the perfect opportunity for fans and supporters of local veterans to come out for an amazing afternoon of entertainment and nostalgia.” Visit the classy cantresses’ new website at www.themanhattandolls. com for photos, bios, audio and video clips of the young women who comprise The Manhattan Dolls. Tickets are just $25 to $35, and are available through the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center box office at www.dhpac.org or phone at 631-656-2148.

Among the world class cuisine that they’re grilling up, the location is like no other on the island. Housed in an old bank, this is the perfect go-to spot for a power-lunch or romantic night out. Everything about Tellers is sophisticated. Before moving on to your table, you can set up for a drink at their bar area, called The Gold Bar. The bar is paneled in dark woods with comfortable lounge chairs in the back and a long, sophisticated bar for you to pull up to and have a seat at. The location; an old bank, still has the bank vault in the back of the restaurant. Instead of housing stocks, bonds and cash, it is now taking care of the restaurant’s long wine list. We’ve ventured inside and it’s quite impressive and filled with liquid treasures. The Bohlsen Restaurant Group owns and manages the restaurant. In the past few years they’ve expanded their Islip empire by opening
Verace in the building directly next door. You can cross between the two quite quickly and enjoy drinks at one and dinner at the other. While we’ve had occasion to visit Tellers two times over the past two years, we’ve always been impressed with the decor, the staff and the cuisine that we have sampled. The bone-in filet mignon was a first for us and was full of flavor and cooked to perfection. We’d recommend Tellers for a variety of different meals. Whether it’s an after-work drink at The Gold Bar, a romantic dinner in the main dining room or a larger get together in the upstairs semi-private area, we’re pretty sure that you can’t go wrong dining here. 605 Main Street Islip, NY 11751 631-277-7070

The Ghost of Abraham Lincoln
There are many rumors as to the White House being haunted by former presidents. None seem to be as popular as those surrounding President Lincoln. President Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover and Harry Truman all claimed to have heard knocking on their bedroom doors when no one was there. They all believed it to be the ghost of Lincoln. Calvin Coolidge's wife reported seeing Lincoln in the Oval office staring out the window with his hands folded behind his back. Lincoln's biographer, Carl Sandburg, claimed to 'feel a strong presence' of Lincoln in this same area. During Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration the ghost of Lincoln seemed to be most active. Lincoln's former bedroom had been turned into a study for first lady Eleanor, who reported having the feeling that someone was watching her. A maid saw Lincoln sitting on a bed pulling off his shoes. Queen Wilhelmina was a guest at the White House and was awakened by a knock at her bedroom door. When she got up and opened it she saw the ghost of Lincoln standing before her, and fainted from the site. Sir Winston Churchill saw Lincoln after climbing out of the bath. Churchill responded, "Good evening Mr. President. You seem to have me at a disadvantage." The ghost smiled, looked away and then disappeared. Since the Truman administration there have been less reports. Lyndon B. Johnson claimed to have spoken to Lincoln's ghost,

and Ronald Reagan's daughter Maureen and her husband saw 'a transparent figure' several times in Lincoln's old bedroom. At Lincoln’s gravesite many have claimed to hear weeping, footsteps and voices. At the homestead in Springfield, visitors have seen the figure of a tall, thin man holding the hand of a little boy, which is believed to be Lincoln’s young son Willie. Others have felt cold spots, while some have been touched by an invisible person. There have been reports of objects moving around, music being played from unknown sources, and mysterious voices. At Ford's Theatre footsteps have been heard, as well as strange sounds, laughter, and crying. Apparitions of Lincoln and Booth have appeared. During performances many actors have reported seeing lights mysteriously flashing in Lincoln's box. A ghostly funeral train carrying the body of Lincoln has been seen by hundreds every April, which marks the anniversary of his death. Interestingly enough, Abe Lincoln himself was 'sensitive' to the spirit world and he often had visions and premonitions including that of his own death, just ten days before his assassination. Six-time, award winning author Kerriann Flanagan Brosky, best known for her Ghosts of Long Island books, has been featured in a number of publications, and has appeared on radio and television. She is the co-host of the blogtalk radio show, “The Kerriann & Joe Show – Spirit Connection.” Her debut novel, The Medal, a work of inspirational fiction is her latest book.

Spring Renovation Time Whenever we think of renovating our homes or landscape, it can seem like an overwhelming task facing us. If you desire to have a fresh new look but dread putting it together, there are several considerations that can make the job easier and even enjoyable. You will also add value to your home and may inspire your neighbors to spruce up their property as well. When I decided to renovate the front foundation planting of my home, I found the easiest thing for me to do was to remove all the existing plant material from the bed and start with a brand new planting. You can try to visualize the final look you may want but sometimes it can be difficult to achieve it when you have to work around existing plants. Many factors may determine whether you want to keep some of what is planted there already or whether you want to transplant or remove them entirely. For example, if you have a favorite specimen tree or shrub, then you may choose to incorporate other plants around it. You may encounter roots that need to be removed if they interfere with preparing the new area. The benefit of keeping some of the existing plants is that they can add a more established look and enhance the appearance of a new planting bed. You may want to consider having a landscape designer or professional nursery person either create a design for you or recommend what may be best. The small front planting at my house would be easy to renovate because I decided to keep it simple. I wanted the landscape to complement the Cape Cod style home and since I would be doing

the job myself I made sure the task at hand was manageable for me. For maintenance purposes, I usually recommend to use shrubs and other plant material that will not demand a lot of pruning or become too overgrown. The area on one side of the front entrance of my house is only 2 ft. wide by 10 ft. long so I did not have much choice but to do a very minimal and simple planting. The other side is 4 foot wide by 15 ft. long, which allowed for me to be a little more creative, but I was still pretty limited. The plants I used needed to be fairly shade tolerant since it is a north facing location. I wanted to be able to work in some perennials that would give some foliage color and contrast well with the shrubs. Keep in mind that you can be your own artist when it comes to what you like personally for your landscape. Adding some large stones for structure or using a trellis with a vine for a vertical effect can enhance some of the problematic areas where you may not know what else to plant. It can be like putting a puzzle together where you may need to shift or rearrange some things along the way. Go ahead and be creative and daring. Once you decide to move forward with renovating, it will be fun and exciting when anticipating the final result. Have a great spring everyone! Hardscaping Can Turn a Drive-By Into a Stop and Buy The front of the house is a term associated with restaurant operations outside of the kitchen. It can refer to matters from décor and patron amenities to the attitude and service of a hostess or wait staff. What makes it important to the success of an eatery also likens to the successful sale of a home by making a good first impression. The term commonly used by real estate professionals, sellers and buyers is curb appeal. Upkeep to the exterior of your home and surrounding landscaping creates a positive first impression for potential buyers. When planning actions that can influence curb appeal, homeowners look to painting or siding, planting trees or bushes, spiffing up front entrances, replacing garage doors and updating windows. If you plan to stay in your home for a few more years, then adding a paver driveway and walkway could be the way to go. You’ll not only increase your home’s curb appeal and appraised resale value but also get to enjoy the many added, low-
maintenance benefits associated with pavers. An Interlocking concrete pavement system does not require sealants and other time-consuming treatments as do asphalt driveways; and because of their low absorption rate, pavers are resistant to cracking, spalling, and damage from frost, snow plowing and deicing salts. Concrete pavers are twice as strong as poured concrete and pavers such as those from Cambridge with ArmorTec®, have a broad spectrum of colors that are guaranteed not to fade. They are slip and skid resistant as well. Cambridge buyers get the added value of a fully-transferrable lifetime warranty — a bonus when the time comes to sell your home. The rise in the popularity of interlocking concrete pavements has been attributed to their visual appeal and design flexibility. Focus groups conducted by leading manufacturers bear out that homeowners prefer pavers over poured concrete because of the limitless pattern designs as well as the color and texture possibilities that are available to them. The ability to complete a well-coordinated landscape design also plays a role in final decisions. Depending on specific characteristics of your property, you may also want to consider a wall system with decorative columns for added visual appeal. Wall systems can be applied to properties with unattractive or sloping front yards, around trees and garden beds, and to build steps. The colors, styles and textures, when selected from the same manufacturer as the pavers, will assure a matching or distinctly coordinated result. Whether in front of your home or in the backyard, hardscaped exterior living spaces are the hottest trend going right now. More and more homeowners are considering their options. The great thing about a hardscaping project is that you can get it done in phases with cutoff points, so that the project is done within your budget and doesn’t look incomplete in the process. For example, this year you could add a paver driveway and next year have a front or side walkway installed. Whatever you decide, enlist the help of a contractor or landscape designer, be sure to do your homework first, and become familiar with the brands that are in the marketplace in addition to the reputation of the installer whose services you plan to engage. Be sure to ask for references and check into the company’s past work especially with the pavingstone manufacturer you choose.
Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc. He is one of the founders and a current board member of the Interlocking Pavement Institute. Organized in 1993, ICPI is the North American trade association representing the interlocking concrete paver industry and considered by peer associations around the world as the leader in development and dissemination of technical information for design professionals and contractors. Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.
