Cover Artist Daniel Del Orfano

Daniel Del Orfano — Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Daniel decided to stay close to his roots and attend Dowling College in Oakdale, NY. There he received his BFA in Art Education and was teaching full time by the fall of 2001. After teaching at the prestigious Knox Boarding School, Daniel took a position in the public school system where he taught art to children of all ages. Though extremely rewarding, this was not his true calling. It was at this time Daniel decided to divert his attention from teaching art to creating art, and in the summer of 2005, he formed The Renaissance Workshop. Specializing in all things art, The Renaissance Workshop gave Daniel the opportunity to expand his horizons, creatively.

As demand for commissioned work increased, Daniel began developing his expressive style, implementing techniques that emphasized texture over realism. Though the work depicted realistic scenes, the effects produced an almost ethereal feeling. The imagery began to take a back seat to the memory of which the image represented. Daniel Del Orfano’s work depicts life, not as it may be, but more as it is remembered- a snapshot, not of a particular moment but of an overall memory. Daniel’s work is available for purchase at LaMantia Gallery - 127 Main Street, Northport, NY. (lamantiagallery.com)

As I open my door this morning, I am already looking forward to getting back into my warm bed later in the day. Walking to my car I find myself questioning why anybody would want to live where it’s 10 degrees and icy. I fumble my way through the snow and tuck my hands deep into my pockets to keep warm. As my car warms up, which seems to take forever, I once again tell myself to ask for an auto start next Christmas. As I put the radio on my favorite station, I head into the village for my morning coffee. I’ve been doing this for so long, that as I am pulling into the drive-through, my coffee is already being made. As I make my way out to Wall Street, I immediately start seeing people that I know; friends, neighbors, a beep here, a wave there. The more I drive and the more I see, I begin to realize the uniqueness of where we live. How many people live on an island surrounded by beaches and villages that are each unique in their own way? It’s something that can’t be duplicated anywhere else in the world. It’s why we cry the blues in the cold and anxiously await the spring. To see it all come alive again. I, for one, hate the cold, but I do love Long Island and all it has to offer. There’s no place that I would rather be. Stay warm and

A Winter Wonderland, a World Away:

Holly Gordon

In 1999, on the cusp of the New Year and the new millennium, photographer Holly Gordon, a Bay Shore resident and longtime member of Huntington’s fotofoto gallery, heeded a whim and embarked on a voyage of discovery to the most southern corner of the world, Antarctica. Although she originally believed that the “pursuit of adorable and amusing penguins” would be the primary focus of her picture-taking, very early on, Holly said that “they became upstaged by the visual splendor of the Antarctic landscape of which I am still daunted.” “Antarctica, the white continent, is the harshest, coldest, windiest, driest, most mountainous place on earth…truly a land of extremes,” Holly reported of the continent which is coated with a mile-thick icy blanket.

12 • village connection • february 2013

A double steel-hulled ‘icebreaker’ brought her and the other tour members within almost touching distance of icebergs, huge frozen monoliths whose tips loomed from the water with a stark yet ethereal beauty. Winter in Antarctica is diametrically opposed to that in the United States, and during her stay in the land of the ‘Midnight sun,’ light prevailed for almost 24 hours a day, Holly said. “I was most surprised by the brightness of the light,” said Holly, adding that she also felt that the lack of pollution in the atmosphere enabled her to capture nature in its most pristine form. The results of her photographic endeavor reveal a landscape imbued with an unparalleled luminosity, and images which resonate with a rhapsody of blues and whites.

“Nowhere on Earth have I traveled, where I discovered a greater clarity and purity of light than in Antarctica. For two magical weeks my camera and eye danced in unison as I documented, simultaneously, the beauty and fragility of our planet,” Holly said. And, as for the march of the penguins that had ignited her adventure, Holly encountered several delightful and intriguing species, including the Adélie, the Gentoo, the Chinstrap, and the Rockhopper. The Adélie penguin is the smallest, most, common and well-known of all Antarctic penguin species, the stereotypical penguin,” Holly said. “With its tuxedo shirt front and white rings around its eyes, it is most endearingly handsome and comical. They can be found forming colonies on coastal beaches throughout Antarctica. Scientists use the Adélie penguin as an indicator species to monitor the abundance of krill, which is

essential to the web of Antarctic life.” Holly’s images also convey a chilling message about the devastating impact of global warming, not only on the Antarctic region and its animal population, but for the ecological wellbeing of the world. The air quality of one of the purest habitats on earth is being compromised as pollution from the Northern Hemisphere steadily drifts towards Antarctica, where the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising. “Over the past twenty years, the annual ice-melting season in the Antarctic Peninsula has increased by two to three weeks. The Adélie penguin population has declined, substantially, due to the loss of sea ice habitat! A similar trend has occurred with the polar bear in the Arctic,” Holly explained. Holly’s image of an Adélie penguin, perched forlornly to a small morsel of an iceberg that probably once served as the home for colonies of these diminutive birds, speaks volumes about the dangers of global warming. This poignant image was awarded first place by National Wildlife Federation in the global warming category of their annual competition. Holly’s extensive travels around the world have provided inspiration for many of her exhibits. To see more of her work, visit www.hollygordonphotographer.com. Her images can be purchased via her website, at fotofoto gallery in Huntington, the Long Island Photo Gallery in Islip and at the Village Art and Frame Shop in Babylon.

Art & Music Christiane Matsumoto was born in Paris and grew up in France post World War Two. She was encouraged to paint by her polish grandmother who had a small art gallery in Paris. Her grandmother gave her a watercolor set and she started to paint seriously, portraying all of her classmates and teachers. She had a watercolor exhibit in her hometown of Viroflay before she came to the United States where she studied Landscape Architecture in Syracuse at the college of environmental sciences and forestry.

Christiane Matsumoto

Christiane graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in landscape architecture in 1981 and married Kyouichi Matsumoto. They moved to Long Island and found work as a landscape designer and landscape architect. In 2000, they created Kyo Matsumoto Inc., their own landscape and installation company, which is known by the name Madame Butterfly Gardens (www.madamebutterflygardens.com). As their children were growing up, she continued to paint and was invited by Peter Falotico to exhibit her work at the Northport high school. She has worked on developing her own art in her free time. Her latest series of paintings is dance and rhythm. In 2011, Christiane created the website Laviedartiste.fineartsudioonline.com for potential buyers to view her work. You can also view her work on her facebook page: Christiane Matsumoto Fine Arts. Elizabeth Cassidy rediscovered her artistic side three year ago while co-facilitating a women’s workshop in Manhattan. She met a woman who talked about wanting to draw for 30 days. Elizabeth’s arm went up into the air (she was hoping it was just a spasm) and thus began her journey back to her art. She had agreed to draw for 30 days with the photographer although it had been years since she had picked up a brush or a pen. Elizabeth quickly discovered that just because she wanted to get

by Rich Rivkin

back to and explore her art, her art didn’t come right back. Her artistic side was a little miffed with her for shutting it out for so long. Her first week of drawing was a total disaster. She started to grieve for the artist that she had been and abandoned, but then a remarkable thing happened, Elizabeth just told herself to paint whatever she wanted to paint with no restrictions. Little by little her inner artist decided to make another appearance and they have been living happily in the same body ever since that day. Her artistic side is teaching her a lot about herself and she lets it have its way when she sits down to create. Elizabeth’s success has come from listening without judgment or a critical voice, and that has made all the difference. When asked about her creative process, Elizabeth says, “I create art because I feel I have no choice but to paint what I feel. To me, it is a very emotional experience to put myself on paper whether it is words or art. And if I don’t get my art and words out – then who will? I like to think of this as the best job I applied for and got. And the good news is that I can’t fire myself. I tried once.I have to say almost anything I come across can inspire me. Sometimes I hear words and a visual pops into my head. Being known for being overly emotional is great when it comes to creating. Some days I feel like I can’t get my art supplies out fast enough. Some days I get them all lined up nicely and then I spend an hour looking at them. And that is okay. I keep in mind that Picasso Elizabeth Cassidy probably had a day or two like that. The trick is to keep showing up. Create your legacy when inspiration hits.” Elizabeth loves painting in pastels, dabbling with ink and colored pencils and she favors the abstract world since the rents are cheaper there. She also paints with her non-dominant hand and most of her portraits are created by using her left hand. Her favorite artists are Picasso, Modigliani, Monet, Calder, Kandinsky, Michelangelo, O’Keefe, Chagall and many others who have taught her to be true to her voice. Do not copy. Create your own masterpieces.

Elizabeth is also a humorist, creativity coach for artists and writers, Reiki Advanced Practitioner and a faculty member of the Art League of Long Island. She is a member of the Art that Matters Artists’ Collective and the Huntington Arts Council. MOMA even gave her an artist’s membership card. She is currently showing her art in shows and galleries around Long Island. Visit her website for info www.elizabethcassidyart.com Pamela K. Varacek is a native Long Islander; her love for the beach, ocean and Great South Bay has been a major source of inspiration for her. She received her B.S. in Art Education at Nazareth College of Rochester and soon after began a career as an art teacher. While taking time off to raise her 2 children, Pam decided to open a children’s clothing store where she hand painted children’s furniture. For the next 10 years, she enjoyed the creativity and challenge of running a store. But something was still missing from her life. About 2 years ago a friend introduced her to an online painting course taught by Mati Rose and Lisa Congdon. Pam realized that this is what was missing from her life, creating on canvas. Through this course, she found another course called Bloom True with Flora Bowley. The class was based on intuitive painting; the concept of

simply painting from your intuition. The course ultimately changed her life, for this is when she discovered a new love of expressing her imagination and whimsical imagery using mixed media and paint. She currently paints using intuitive painting. She is quoted by saying “This has been a liberating and life changing move for me.” Pam’s work starts out with simply covering the canvas in paint and then layers of paint are added over and over. With each layer, a metamorphosis is created on the canvas. Once the textured canvas is created, she uses her intuition to “find” imagery to bring out using acrylic paints but also mixed media such as found objects, photography, vintage papers, etc. She is currently showing her Pamela K. Varacek work in local galleries and shows and is working with a licensing company based in Connecticut. Visit her website, pamelakvaracek.com and on Facebook, pamelakvaracek. Rich Rivkin produces ongoing Art/Music events on Long Island, including Live Art Fusion, ArtMOSPHERE, and the 2013 Summer Arts Festival Series (40 Bands + 100 Artists), featuring the bands and artists listed in this month’s Spotlight. www.limusicfestivals.com

Eclectic Pairings are Setting New Trends in Outdoor Living Room Design Eclecticism in interior design, a trend that incorporates distinctive pairings, has found its way out the back door and into the outdoor living room, pool deck and even smaller patio designs where space is a premium. The movement combines modern with traditional design characteristics that include the use of a variety of colors, textures and patterns in an integrated design. Leading manufacturers of hardscape materials have broadened their product lines to reflect the avant-garde tastes of homeowners, landscape designers and hardscape contractors who share this sprightly, “almost anything goes” mindset. Hardscape materials such as concrete pavers, wall units and outdoor living room components, made from natural materials, can point to desired results without breaking the budget because they mimic the characteristics of their natural stone counterparts. Hardscape manufacturers such as Cambridge, have captured tasteful balances of solid and blended colors, pronounced textures and smooth surfaces along with limitless pattern possibilities within their product mix. Selections for designers and consumers boast value, durability, ease of installation and performance excellence while being mindful of coordinating colors and textures in both conventional and less-predictable ways. Having the ability to mix colors and textures without the fear of compromising performance allows flexibility in design that can step out of the box rather than box-in the designer to settle for the more mundane. Results can be quite striking and rewarding. Because solid and blended colors can be mixed if it complements a design objective or particular application, flexibility in choosing shapes, colors and textures is encouraged. Changing sizes from larger to smaller shapes will also add flavor to the final project. For example, areas can be sectioned off or highlighted by using bands of contrasting shapes in another color and/or texture. This is referred to as “banding”. If a retaining wall, perimeter wall, garden wall, tree ring or other kind of wall will be part of your landscape, an eclectic approach can also fit well in a hardscaping plan by not just combining different colors, styles and textures in the wall system but also in the design/build of the wall itself. Many contractors are demonstrating their creative prowess by integrating pavers, casual seating, column treatments, column

18 • village connection • february 2013

mailboxes, and untypical wall and column capping as well as semicircular and serpentine runs into the design. Most manufactured wall systems comprise modular units, which can be creatively arranged often without requiring additional cutting of the wallstones. By entertaining the many options at hand, the aesthetics of a wall can change from a traditional design to contemporary with little or no effort. This is the perfect time of year to start planning your outdoor projects. An array of photographs showing various applications of products ranging from pavingstones and wallstones to outdoor lifestyle amenities and enhancements can be found in the 2014 Cambridge Outdoor Living Guide, which is available online at www.cambridgepavers.com. Another good place to start your search is by attending home shows that usually pop up now through early spring. Manufacturers and contractors spend a great deal of money and time presenting products and services in the best possible light. You’ll find their displays are amazingly realisticlooking and idea provoking. If eclectic pairings titillate your taste buds when planning an front yard or backyard renovation, look for booths that catch your attention by displaying these techniques and professional expertise in executing them. Contractors with a bent for creativity will enjoy showing you samples of how their menus of hardscape products and installation ideas will satisfy even those homeowners most hungry for pairing up colors, textures and designs in a truly eclectic design.

Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc. He is one of the founders and a current board member of the Interlocking Pavement Institute. Organized in 1993, ICPI is the North American trade association representing the interlocking concrete paver industry and considered by peer associations around the world as the leader in development and dissemination of technical information for design professionals and contractors. Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.

Horace & Sylvia’s Publick House in Babylon C

hef Brian Fugit is now at the helm of Horace & Sylvia’s in Babylon, an establishment that boasts a wonderful bar scene and great food as well. With 18 beers on tap (and local offerings such as Blue Point, etc.) they’ve recently been delving into a once per month “Beer Dinner” to pair up some cuisine with tasty brew. Babylon is becoming quite the hub for dining on the south shore. New restaurants are popping up, almost weekly, and the old standbys have been placed on notice that they’d better perform to keep up and in business. We don’t have to worry about Horace & Sylvia’s though, they’re pumping out quality food just as they have for years. We stepped into their kitchen recently to photograph some of their more popular dishes coming off the line. Horace & Sylvia’s Publick House 100 Deer Park Avenue Babylon, NY 11702 631-587-5081
