We still have the holidays before us as I write my final publisher’s letter of the year. We’ve enjoyed a Fall filled with one gorgeous day after another, and we can only hope that the winter will be short and sweet. I have to start off with apologies to last months Huntington cover artist, James Miceli. After creating that amazing Billy Joel cover on a moments notice, his bio and credit were inadvertently left out of the issue. We’ve included it here, along with a look back on some of the other covers that he has created for us over the years. James has been a contributing artist since the start of Village Connection, and we always know that we are going to be thrilled with anything that he does for us. You will also read about another favorite of ours, Jo-Ann Coretti. Jo-Ann has been featured on many Village Connection covers, and has become our go to holiday cover artist on many occasions. We hope you enjoy reading about them both as well as the other artists that are featured in this issue. December is a busy month, and it’s already under way. We’ve featured some of our favorite upcoming events in this issue, along with the best places for nightlife and entertainment throughout the month. While it’s the time spent together that matters most during this time, there is something special about choosing a gift to express to someone that they are meaningful in your life. A musician’s art / an artist’s music. James Miceli is a graphic artist and musician living in Huntington Village. He has been a featured cover artist with Village Connection many times over the past eight years. Pictured below are some of his past covers where music and musicians play an important role. By day James creates websites, logos, packaging and more at his art and graphic design studio. You can see some of his work at www.urgecreative.com. By night James is a freelance jazz and funk saxophone player. He plays with Richard Rabatin’s Whiskey Rebellion and is a member of SwingTime, an authentic 30s and 40s style swing band. 3 1 0 2 s d n e r T y a Holid The holidays are among us and along with what to buy everyone on our list…we wonder what to wear to all our holiday events. If your holiday party is in a restaurant or a neighbor’s get together, try a great going out to dinner top paired with skinny jeans, velvet skinnys or mixed media leggings. This look works great with heels, we love stilettos, they make your legs look long and lean. Your tops can be sequined or go for color. The colors of the season are jewel toned. Emerald, or amethyst. If these are out of your comfort zone, try burgundy, It’s a great seasonal color and it’s very on trend …think of it as your “new black”. Leather is everywhere this season…skirts and pants…leather blazers….it’s all on trend and so fabulous. We are loving the high waist leather skirts as well as leather and ponte leggings with a great embellished top. Another option, jeans and a graphic tee topped with a leather blazer. If you don’t want leather as the main stay of your outfit…use it in your accessories. Leather cuffs are in, cuffs with studs…even better. If you have been invited to a cocktail party, make an entrance with a great dress or flirty skirt. Lace is right on trend and you guessed it, works well with leather. Leather and lace is very fitting this season, as are dresses with sequin detail or metallic accents. Another great option is red. I have personally always loved red this time of year. Think of it as standing out in a crowd of black. Of course , black is always in. For an updated look, try to mix in an animal print accessory or a metallic stocking and you will instantly update your little black dress. If your are coming from the office…swap out tights and flats for metallic stockings and heels or booties. Change up your accessories by adding some bold colored jewelry and trade in your handbag for a great statement clutch. Party on and see you in 2014!

Huntington’s Annual Historic Holiday House Tour
The Huntington Historical Society’s annual Historic Holiday House Tour has become the kick-off event for the holiday season for many Long Islanders. Again this year, the tour will feature 5 private historic homes in the Town of Huntington that the public will see for the first time. As in the past, many of the houses have a historical significance. The 2013 Huntington Historical Society’s annual house tour will again give the visitors a glimpse of the houses built and the families that owned them throughout Huntington’s history. The holiday decorations add to the enjoyment of the season. Tickets are limited and should be purchased in advance. Winterfest in Northport: Holiday Decorating at its Best
Northport Village has been transformed into a storybook town for Winterfest, the month-long celebration sponsored by the Northport Chamber of Commerce which runs through December. Parking meters done up like giant candy canes, and elaborately decorated store windows are some of the wonders that visitors will enjoy throughout holiday season. For the delight of both young and old, a strolling Santa will be in town from December 16-23, and caroling school children will enliven Main Street with song during the week before Christmas. Thanks to the Chamber’s ‘Holiday Doors of Northport,’ contest, those who venture into town can expect to be particularly impressed by the gaily adorned entrances to both businesses and residences. The Robert Krueger Bandstand in Northport Village Park will be done up with lights, transforming this beloved landmark into a brightly colored holiday confection. Check out the charming Christmas vignette that has graced the window of Northport Sweet Shop for as long as I can remember. This window, which takes on a decidedly rosy glow for the holidays, features a large, welcoming plastic Santa, coupled with a vintage paper lithograph of the jolly old elf, and a wreath sporting fanciful ornaments. Miniature snow-covered cottages and bottle brush Christmas trees complete this nostalgic scene. Also worthy of admiration and delight is the window of Northport Hardware Store, where the Leg Lamp, a facsimile of the one seen in the cinematic holiday classic, ‘A Christmas Story,” will be displayed during December. If you love seasonal decorating, the Northport Historical Society’s annual holiday house tour is not to be missed. “Homes for the Holidays showcases a handful of vintage homes, including a 1905 Victorian and a circa 1860 residence, charmingly decorated for the season. Of

particular interest is the circa 1761 Skidmore House, Northport’s oldest home, which has been restored and decorated for the holidays. The cost of the tour, which takes place on Sunday, December 8 from noon to 4 pm, is $25 for members, $30 for non-members. She concurrently is engaged in two major large scale painting series - The American/Icon Archtype Series and the Jazz/Horse Series, an intensely colorful expressionist series. Stephanie Yovino-Folk considers herself a classically trained artist with a modern expressionist style. Her work is rarely a blend of hues that form easily digestible imagery. Instead, SLY’s creations are uncomfortable and honest, even ugly at times. She draws her inspiration

from emotions and deep desires. Using a linear composition and saturated colors, Stephanie creates in almost a design-like style. She has invented her own system of hieroglyphs that only she can translate and uses them in many of her paintings; symbols being an important element in her art. All of her work is extremely personal and always tells the truth of how she is feeling the moment she is creating. Stephanie has been an artist since birth. She doesn’t remember a time when art wasn’t her focus. She grew up in Lloyd Harbor and attended the Huntington School of Fine Arts, after which she went to graduate with her BFA from Syracuse University and MS in Art Administration from Drexel University. During this time she was finding her artistic style and exhibiting extensively. After graduating from her Masters program she opened a local Art Cafe called ASTA. Her vision was to bring the NYC First Friday art openings to Huntington Village. She served fondue and lite fare paired with local wines from LI vineyards while featuring only local artists with monthly exhibits and events. SLY sold that business after two years and began working as the Director of Lumas Gallery in SoHo. She considers this time to be
her transitional period when she was

learn about other artists while exploring different ideals and beliefs. In 2008, after giving birth to her first daughter, Stephanie resigned from the gallery world and focused solely on creating, teaching and motherhood. Stephanie now owns her studio where she teaches art privately on a variety of levels and mediums. Stephanie’s Art Studio has been the perfect way for her to balance all the demands in her life while continuing her artistic passions. The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center presents the World Premiere of “Moey’s Fairytale Adventure” An Original Musical Comedy Fable The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center presents Moey’s Fairytale Adventure, a 60-minute, fun-filled, immersive musical, ideal for children ten years old and younger. The world premiere performances will be held Saturday, Dec. 7th at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 8th at 12:00 noon and 3 p.m. Tickets are just $10, and will have the entire family dancing in the aisles. The play is the brainchild of acclaimed children’s performer Melissa Levis, also known as Moey, and was adapted from a book by authors Leah Lane and Stewart F. Lane, a Tony Award winner. The play is being produced by Bonnie Comley and Alyssa Renzi, and directed by Five Towns College professor and Broadway veteran Marie Danvers. Moey’s Fairytale Adventure introduces children to Tina, a clever young girl, who is on a quest to rescue Storyland from certain doom. Together, Tina and the children will learn to use the power of music and imagination to save Storyland and outwit the Big, Bad Wolf. Melissa Levis is an award-winning children’s songwriter who created the character of Moey in 2005. Sporting her signature pink, sparkly
dress, Moey is one of the most well-recognized and beloved performers among boys and girls in the eight-and-under-set in New York City. The New York Post dubbed her The Pied Piper in Pink because her young fans faithfully follow her band, Moey’s Music Party, from gig to gig. Melissa, who has written for numerous Off-Broadway productions, discovered the joys of singing to children after the birth of her son. As Music Director of a New York City pre-school, she honed her skills and developed a real sense of the kind of music that children find inspiring. Melissa has been profiled in The New York Times, New York Post, The Huffington Post, Time Out NY Kids and numerous other publications. The Forgotten Exercise Component:
REST
For those of us that exercise regularly and love it, it is very easy to forget that our body needs rest. Overtraining can be detrimental to your health. Training for the NYC marathon this year has taught me a lot about giving my body rest. I knew the recommendations for resting your body but never realized what an impact it made on my health and my performance. As I trained I learned that my my body performed better and recovered faster if I took time off from all exercise. When you exercise your muscles break down and you energy storage and fluids get depleted. Glycogen is stored in your muscles and your body uses it to exercise. When you rest you allow your muscles to repair and rebuild themselves and by taking in healthy nutrients allow your body to store more fuel (glycogen). Drinking fluids to replace what was lost during the activity will hydrate your muscles and make your next workout performance even better. The Mayo Clinic states working out anywhere from 75 minutes per week to 300 minutes per week depending on the intensity of the workouts. To get a great workout that causes what we can the “Afterburn” and causes your body to continue to burn calories for 2436 hours after the workout ends you want to do high intensity short duration workouts. So 5 days per week of intense 30 minute workouts will put you right in the middle of what they recommend (at 150 minutes
per week). That means taking 2 days per week off for rest. The two days can be back to back or in between work out days depending how your body feels. Now does this mean you can’t workout 6 days per week? I think that depends on what you are training for and what you are looking to achieve and how you are training. There is a lot of different information available that gives contrasting information. I believe that listening to your body is the most important way to decide if you are not giving your muscles enough rest. If your muscles are really sore and you can rest the next day and workout again the following day then do so. Or perform different exercises than you did the day before. Cross training can help your body by doing different exercises in your daily workouts therefore working the muscles differently and reducing strain on the muscle tissue. However you decide to get rest into your workout routine just make sure you do get rest and take days off and avoid injury and overtraining.

Hardscaping: Easy Solutions Resolving For Difficult Conditions A New Year’s resolution is a promise that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something bad on the first day of the year. Resolutions can also encompass taking care of matters around the home that have been neglected or put on the back burner. More challenging chores can include a range of things from removal of storm water build up on a driveway or leveling off a sloping front or backyard to dealing with a host of other annoying and/or problematic conditions. Many times we put off negotiating projects such as these because we don’t exactly know the best solution. Your local hardscape manufacturer, supply yard or professional hardscape contractor may hold the answer you are looking for to help chip away at your list of resolutions for 2014. Weather-related problems rank high on just about any homeowner’s list. For people who reside near water or in areas with higher than normal water tables, controlling storm water is important – and it’s better to be safe than sorry. Many paver manufacturers offer different solutions by offering products that are specially designed for storm water management or have multiple purposes, one being the rapid removal of water build up that can cause flooding. Other benefits are the prevention of erosion and the pollution of local water supplies. When correctly installed, permeable paver products leave openings that allow for storm water drainage and ground water re-charge (a totally green solution). Water runoff can be reduced by as much as 100%. Today’s permeable systems are also aesthetically pleasing and have been tested to deliver a maximum degree of strength to handle both pedestrian and heavy vehicular traffic, making them ideal for walkways, patios and driveways. The pavers are laid out in a variety of patterns with gravel between them. For those living in areas prone to harsh winters, it is refreshing to know that an interlocking concrete pavement system, unlike poured or stamped concrete, is resistant to damage from deicing salts and, because of its low absorption of moisture, will not be affected by frost. By installing a heating system beneath a maintenance-free driveway of concrete pavers, customary winter care such as snow removal and the need to apply deicing salts are eliminated. Cambridge Edgestone is an ideal edging option for mulch beds, gardens and decorative gravel in lieu of concrete, clay brick, molded plastic and wooden ties. Manufactured wallstones are more than just functional, and when properly installed, should in no way be compared to painted or texturefaced, cinderblock landscape wall units that are subject to chipping, peeling, cracking, dislodging and more importantly, structural failure. When compared to natural stone, manufactured wallstones are usually a far less costly material. Because the wallstones are designed to use in a wall system, versatility and ease of installation are also prime factors. According to Freedonia Group, a market research firm in Ohio, America’s demand for landscaping products is projected to grow 6.9 percent per year through 2017. The residential market remains the largest for the overall landscaping category, accounting for 58 percent of sales in 2012. Angels and Miracles In this seasons of angels and miracles, do you believe in miracles? Miracles do happen. I know this because I've had one happen to me. It occurred within hours of my father's passing eight years ago. As much as I would like to reveal what that miracle was, I would spoil the ending of my novel The Medal, a work of inspirational fiction, which is based on my own true story. As for angels, they exist as well. Sometimes they may come in the most unlikely of forms, but they are there for a purpose. They're there when we least expect it. They're there to guide us, to console us, to lend a helping hand. Angels are among us, whether they be in earthly form or as celestial beings. Many people claim to have had experiences with angels because they do often take on human form. You may not know that you have encountered an angel until after the interlude. They, like spirit guides and our deceased relatives, are there to help us on our journey, and they are one of God's most precious beings. Sometimes angels appear to us in dreams. Others have reported being saved from burning buildings or terrible car wrecks by someone who appeared "not of this world". Someone I know personally believes that she and her sister were rescued by angels as teenagers when they were swept out to sea in an undertow and were on the verge of drowning. When people have an angel encounter

they don't know it at the time. As quickly as the "person" appears in time of need, he or she quickly disappears without a trace. It truly is remarkable. As for miracles, sometimes the miracles we are hoping for or praying for, just aren't supposed to happen. Sometimes people are cured of illnesses, and sometimes they’re not. Miracles can come out of hardships. It might not be until years later when you realize or understand the deeper meaning as to why things have happened in your life. Whatever you may believe, miracles and angels are available to all of us, regardless of who we are or what religion we may be. During this season of miracles, let's try to find the good amongst all the bad in the world, and maybe we can make a difference in someone's life. Believe in angels for they are the messengers of miracles.

Brownstones Coffee in Amityville
Every town on Long Island should have a coffee spot / cafe like Brownstones. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cup of expertly made coffee (or tea) and to indulge in some tasty breakfast foods as well. It’s a smaller cafe, so if you’re planning on staying for food on the weekends, be prepared for a short wait while the tables turn over; but it’s oh-so-worth-it. Stepping into Brownstones is akin to stepping back into the past. The decor and signage references the 1930′s and it is a cute place to sit, drink and eat. There is a dining room in the same room as the counter, with many tables while in the next room a few booths are littered against the wall to help with any overflow in the main room. Omeletes, pancakes and stuffed french toast dominate the breakfast menu and as such we indulged in the blueberry pancakes, “The Healthiest” omelete (egg whites, tomato, pepper turkey,

spinach and swiss) and the Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes for the 5-year old with us. The shape of the Mickey Mouse pancakes was enough to get her to eat most of her meal, so we can consider that a win. Easily accessible to most parts of the island, Brownstones in Amityville should be on the list for most people to stop in and sample. A great breakfast / brunch spot is hard to come by these days and when we find one, we latch on and try to let as many people know about it as possible. This is one of those times.
