Twenty five years of professional photography and I am still having a blast! I started my career photographing bands, models and actors. After a few years I found myself in the wedding industry. There I learned how to photograph people in the most flattering way and helped preserve countless memories for my clients. I no longer photograph weddings but I now have years of experience behind me. So, I’m back! Back to my passion, back to bands, back to models and back to actors. And I'm having even more fun than the first time. I am so passionate about my work. My business has expanded to include head shots for both actors and business professionals, modeling portfolios and family portraiture. I‘m also one of the house photographers at the Paramount Theater in Huntington Village. I am thrilled to be doing this issue of Village Connection Magazine and I look forward to many more. A Survival Guide to the Perfect Look A woman’s wedding day is the most important day in her life, however it can also be the most stressful. As all eyes and cameras will be on you, you’ll want to make sure you look perfect. However, achieving your overall look doesn’t have to be stressful. Just follow these simple tips. First, start with the dress. Shopping for a wedding dress can be fun; as long as you don’t expect that the first dress you try on will be “the one.” Have some patience and you will eventually find your dream dress. This season, look for dresses that add drama and romance to your wedding day. Forget about last year’s drop-waist, look for a fitted waist that is sculpted and hugs your curves. And, you don’t have to stick with the traditional bell-shaped skirt. Dimensional details are big this season in fabric flowers and swirls. Now that you’ve picked your dress, you need to think about your hairstyle. The good news is that there are plenty of new, modern and trendy wedding hairstyles for 2013. No matter what length your hair is, you can find a style that will fit your personality and the look of your wedding. It is a good idea to go for your fittings with your hair and make up done. This will help you get the complete picture so you can decide on the look you want to achieve. At Spa Adriana, we are seeing a twist on a style that never will go out of fashion. Set on Long Island, the Great Gatsby is causing a wave of 1920’s nostalgia with its most recent feature film on the silver screen. The ghosts of Gatsby may be everywhere right now, but if you want to feel the glamour of living in what has come to be known as the Jazz Age, you must experience the restaurant, Jellyfish. This grand house, the Charles Whitney Mansion, named for its owner in 1881, sits proudly overlooking Mill Pond in Centerport Harbor. The present owner, Ralph Colamussi, restored this historic property to its original grandeur in 2012 when he created the uniquely original, Jellyfish Restaurant. Get a date and come dressed in modern flapper style---as we did for this issue’s Village Connection --and flaunt your inner Gatsby glitz! Begin the night with a cocktail or two (leave the extended cigarette holder at home!), and revel in Gatsby -fever with a Roaring Twenties-inspired specialty drink at Jellyfish. Cocktails with names of old-time gangsters like the Lansky, and the Lucciano will get the conversations started. Martinis anyone? Get started with Meatball Lollipops served with a dollop of ricotta or indulge in the ultimate Maryland Crab Cake with fried green tomato and corn relish. Appetizers and raw bar selections are winners!

As you dine, you will be surrounded by the scenic water view, and the whimsical details of the sea creature motif keeps you smiling. The blown- glass sconces resemble-- what else, but jellyfish--- give off just the right light to accent the soft-green and beige hues of the décor. General Manager and Wine Director, Joseph Scalice, a long-time restaurateur, enjoys sharing his wine pairing knowledge with guests. His wine picks hit the right note to perfectly complement each course. Menu options are a plenty-- entrees run the spectrum from pastas and salads to chicken and steak, with an emphasis on fish, seafood and sushi dinners. My handsome gentleman partner enjoyed the Bone-In Braised Short Rib, a hearty dish with garlic mashed potatoes and caponata, finished with a Chianti demi-glace and sherry steak sauce. My favorite was the Pan Seared Sea Scallops, delectable and perfectly cooked, served with a grilled oyster mushrooms truffle risotto and chardonnay beurre blanc—I could not stop eating it! Jellyfish has something for everyone, including a dockside menu to eat overlooking the water, happy hour and live music, exquisite dining rooms for private parties, a late night Speakeasy Tavern and even a live aquarium for all ages to enjoy. Gatsby Fashion Everyone seems to have “Gatsby fever” thanks to the newly released feature film that will be bringing back the Roaring 20s in a big way! Giving Back to the Community, With Style

W

alking into Spa Adriana on Main Street, one feels the welcome, the warmth, of this chic Aveda lifestyle spa and salon. Co-founder and creative director Adriana Vater has infused Spa Adriana with a genuine love for her craft, her community and sincere joy in helping others. She’ll frequently greet guests with a warm embrace; everyone knows they’re always in good hands with Adriana and her exceptional team of beauty professionals. She co-founded the award-winning Spa Adriana with her husband, John, 28 years ago. Today it is a thriving business; named one of the top 200 fastest growing spas and salons in the country by Salon Today magazine, Spa Adriana is one of Huntington’s fashion icons. Adriana’s leveraged that success to support causes that are close to her heart, such as the Hecksher Museum, the Vanderbilt Museum and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. She also plays a vital role in the Huntington Hot List, a “shop locally” initiative for Huntington businesses that first started during some of the most difficult times for community businesses. “We believe the success of one business helps ensure the success of all businesses, and the success of the community as a whole,” she said. “We’ve engaged local businesses through resource sharing, co-branded events and more to encourage guests to shop locally. We need to work together to keep all of us strong.” Her efforts were honored by Long Island Business News which named her one of the Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business. For Adriana, who grew up in Columbia in a family of 10 children, getting involved in the beauty industry was an opportunity to channel her creativity. “I loved dolls and for as far back as I can remember I was cutting and styling my dolls’ hair, crafting styles that were distinctive and interesting,” she said. “In school I explored my talents for sculpting, drawing and an all-around creativity.” She merged that love of art with a strong need to help others. “I was raised by a mother who was always very interested in health and wellness. This inspired me, and it fostered my own passion for healing others, while making them feel truly beautiful,” she said. “I always knew I wanted to work with others, but not just on a small scale. I wanted to start a business to help people look and feel good from the inside out.” Environmental responsibility fuels Adriana’s passion as well. She

spearheads a global effort on sustainability, and just this past April partnered with Aveda to help raise $5 million for clean water. She speaks to students about environmental awareness, oftentimes with Congressman Steve Israel, and works with pioneers in marine biology to help preserve the fragile marine ecosystem in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, supporting the local community with another business she and John co-founded, Ceviche Tours, an eco-tourism company that brings jobs to the region and helps protect whale sharks, an endangered species. Partnering with John, the love of her life, on this journey has been an important part of Spa Adriana’s success. “I think loving what you do, and being with people who encourage you to reach for your dreams, is what has fueled my – our – success.” “Having the love of your life alongside you, doing what he loves, too, encourages my own creativity. Our staff is family to us as well. I think our clients feel that welcoming spirit.” Connecting With Adriana Vater (Q&A) Where does passion fit in? You must make room for your passion. I think this is the key to success: find what drives you, do what you love. What do you do at Fashion Week? Every season John and I attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC. For years we were behind the scenes doing hair and makeup for many of the top designers’ shows and now I’m there in an editorial capacity and John is front-of-house in the media risers taking photos of all the runway action. We gather intel for our clients at Spa Adriana and bring back inspiration on the next season’s trends to our creative team at the Spa, keeping an eye on new trends in fashion and beauty. How does Spa Adriana reflect your commitment to the environment? Spa Adriana has always been an eco-conscious, “green” business. When it was first designed we employed many of the same green building techniques used by the Mayans. We’ve since taken this green consciousness further, using low-voltage lights, recycled steel and sustainable materials. The façade, which resembles an ancient Mayan temple, was built using man-made cements as architectural stone. Our good friends Dr. Alfonso Moralas, Archeologist and Luis Eschevres, Mayan Architect and Artisan produced wonderful Mayan art replicas. What one thing do you think young women today need to know? Be fiercely true to yourself. And in that you must love yourself, honor who you are, do not let anyone stand in your way. It is a commitment to give the world the vibrance that is who you are. Do not settle for anything less!

What’s Trending Right Now & How to Wear It

ong Island loves their summers. We may look forward to Spring and breathe a sigh of relief at the sight of green on the trees instead of snow on the ground, but it's summer that we desire. It's happy hour at Prime, weekends out east and BBQ's around the pool. Long Islanders are no longer hibernating, we are now celebrating....What does a girl wear? At the mention of summer I start to think of white, lighter fabrics, bolder colors and fun statement pieces. Florals are in, Wear them in your tops, dresses or pants. Make sure the rest of your outfit stays neutral. Update your wardrobe with Maxi's dresses and skirts. Pair them with flats or wedges. Maxi's will work for day or evening affairs; you only need adjust your shoes and accessories. Get used to this trend, it continues through resort of next year. This summer, printed pants are all the rage... Animal prints are a huge trend for summer and into fall. You will find them in tops, pants and dresses as well as in statement accessory pieces. Have fun with this new trend...and remember elephants are good luck. Another great look this summer is lace. It's more casual then sophisticated. Don't think of lace and pearls, think of pairing lace pants with a fun top or a lace top with denim jeans or shorts. Make sure to update your denim this summer. Colored jeans, cropped skinny denim and throw in a boyfriend jean for casual weekend wear. Want to show some leg? Go for it , with a high waisted short. Think black, white or striped...keep your top neutral and add

Stars on the Beach

The spectacular setting and the relative isolation of the Village of Asharoken have attracted celebrities over the years. Most came as summer visitors and had little impact on the life of the Village other than creating a brief frenzy of interest. They ranged from entertainers such as Jackie Gleason and Marlene Dietrich to writers such as Eugene O’Neill and Antoine de Saint Exupery. Two notables, however, found life on this beach attractive enough to become respected permanent residents who contributed greatly to their adopted community. After spending many summers on Asharoken Avenue cartoonist Rube Goldberg built a year-round house there. He is remembered throughout the world for his complicated and convoluted gadgets, but his neighbors remember him as a friendly man with a kind word and a fast quip for everyone who generously contributed his drawings to charity auctions. Goldberg served on the Village Board of Trustees from 1946 to 1954. In 1953 he was asked to draw a representation of Chief Asharoken for the cover of a pamphlet about the Village. In the 1970s, the Village Board adopted this representation as the official symbol of the Village to appear on its stationery and police patches. The marble statue of Asharoken that stands in front of Village Hall was later created from that sketch.

Edith Storey was a celebrated silent film star who had appeared in films ranging from Shakespearean drama and adaptations of Dickens to tales of the Wild West. In 1918, Storey abandoned her career to drive a Red Cross ambulance in New York City as part of the war effort. After the war, she starred in a few more films, but at the age of 29 decided to retire to the home she had purchased in1917 on the beach in Asharoken. Still motivated by public service, Storey became active in the community, and in 1932 she became Village Clerk, an office she held until 1960. When she took office, Asharoken had no Village Hall so her home was the scene of public hearings and elections. When the original Village Hall finally opened in 1939, it contained no office space. Storey’s residence continued to function as the clerk’s office throughout her tenure. Both Goldberg and Storey found more than a pleasant summer retreat in Asharoken. They found a warm community whose welcome they returned with selfless public service.

Instead, let’s talk about something that does matter. What does matter is that you can always work to be a better version of YOU and that is independent of what anyone else is doing. It is impossible to try and be somebody else. It is impossible because that “somebody else” already exists. You can never be somebody else no matter how hard you try. It’s a waste of time wishing for that and it causes envy which is a wasted emotion. But, you can always be a smarter, stronger and better version of YOU. Do you want to be a better version of you? Decide how bad you want it. Do you want it bad enough to do what it takes? Are you willing to put in the extra hours and go the extra mile? Do you feel that you are worthy of being a better you? Decide that you want to work for it and decide that you will stop comparing yourself to others. Understand that you will have to work for it. There is a solution for everyone if you want to find it. It may be harder for you, it may take longer for you, and there may be more obstacles for you, but that doesn’t matter because there is a formula for everyone including you! If you want it bad enough and if you are willing to work for it, you can find a solution that will work for you!

Recognize that every step forward is a step in the right direction. Every step forward is still a step forward! Let go of the idea that you have to do all or nothing and be proud of the strides you are making in the right direction. Instead of looking at how far you have to go, look at how far you have come. Think what you can do right during the day instead of beating yourself up over what you think you did wrong. Many people compare themselves to others when it comes to losing weight, getting fit or becoming a success. The problem is that all of this comparing does nothing to help you become a better you. Say you are bummed out because your friend just ran a marathon and you feel you could never do that. Instead of being bummed out, start taking action and do what she did; go jog around the block. That action alone is a step forward in the right direction and gets you one step further to your goals. Sitting there envying her and complaining about why it is “easier for her” does nothing to help you. So instead of pondering why someone else has more than you, take the time to decide how bad you want it and decide how hard you are willing to work for it. Excuses or Solutions, YOU decide.

This is one of my favorite and most used recipes on The Earth Diet. I love it because it is super simple and can be made in under 15 minutes, with only 7 ingredients, and in just 3 steps. It is also super high in protein and anti-oxidants. This recipe serves 3 people. Ingredients: One head of kale One avocado 1 Tbs apple cider vinegar 2 Tbs of flax oil 3 Tbs of amino acids (or coconut "soy sauce" or 1 teaspoon of Himalayan salt) 4 Tbs of nutritional yeast 4 Tbs of sunflower seeds 1. Tear the kale off from its stem and place in a large bowl. Tear into small pieces. 2. Massage the avocado into the kale. 3. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir, and it's ready. Training for a Running Event

I have participated in many 5K, 10K and mudd runs, including the 13 mile Tough Mudder, but I am taking on my biggest physical challenge ever this November when I run the NYC Marathon with Team Autism Speaks. Whether you want to run a 5K (3.2 miles) or a full marathon (26.2 miles), I am here to tell you that you can do it. How? By putting together a training schedule and a nutrition plan that will work together to get your body and mind into the best shape to succeed. I believe the best way to train for a running event is to combine different types of running with strength training. My training schedule consists of 3 days of running and 3 days of boot camp training sessions. My running schedule consists of one long run (right now it’s 11 miles); one short run off-road with hills and body weight exercises, like push ups, squats, burpees, jumping jacks etc worked into the run (3-4 miles); and an in-between distance of about 6-7 miles with hills and sprints. The other three days are any combination of body weight exercises, such as pull ups, monkey bars, battling ropes, jump ropes, box jumps, sand bag workouts, dumbbell workouts or suspension strap training. I have increased my stretching routine daily.

My nutrition is pretty clean on a daily basis; no sugar, no alcohol, eating every 4 hours, 5 meals per day, with a balance of carbohydrates and proteins in every meal. For example, steel cut oatmeal, fresh blueberries and a handful of raw nuts for breakfast; mid-morning meal of an apple with one tablespoon natural almond butter; for lunch, a salad with tofu; a mid-afternoon meal of raw veggies and hummus; and dinner is whole grain couscous or quinoa with black beans and fresh tomato, avocado and any vegetable I can get my hands on. Now, I eat mostly vegan but you can add chicken, fish or any lean meat into your protein choices. Tweak this schedule to include the foods you like, along with the distances you want to run, and make sure to get strength training into your workouts and you will be running across the finish line in no time!outs and you will be running across the finish line in no time!

Nasal Irrigation

An Alternative Treatment Option For Sinusitis

Sinus infection is the fifth most common diagnosis where doctors regularly prescribe antibiotics. However, they are no help against most sinus infection, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr.Jane Garbutt, of Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis, who lead the study said, “There is not much to be gained from antibiotics.” As in most cases where the causative agent is a virus, prescribing antibiotics is just worthless. In such a situation, another modality for treating sinus infection is nasal irrigation, or nasal wash as commonly known, a technique that flushes out congested nasal passages with a saltwater solution with the help of a Neti Pot or a nasal bulb syringe. In a WebMD.com article, Evangeline Lausier, M.D., Assistant clinical professor of medicine and director of clinical services at Duke University’s department of integrative medicine said, “I find it to be a first line of defense in dealing with complicated sinus problems and allergy problems.” She further added, “Particularly if you are developing congestion or have a sinus infection, it’s very helpful.” Sinusitis is a clinical condition characterized by inflammation of the lining of the sinuses. Sinuses are the air-filled spaces in the facial bones, which can produce mucus, a thick gelatinous fluid. Sinuses are lined by cilia; tiny hair like projections, which sweep out mucus through sinuses and nasal passages. Both mucus and cilia help in trapping bacteria and foreign substances from air that we breathe. Change in temperature or air pressure, excessive use of nasal decongestant, swimming, smoking, and allergy to dust and pollen can damage cilia, so they are not able to function properly. Hence, mucus gets accumulated inside sinuses and nasal passages. Different types of nasal wash techniques are available but use

depends on personal choice and doctor’s advice. Experts advise use of nasal irrigation for one to three weeks only, because it can be harmful when used regularly over a long period. According to a study abstract published in the archives of American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), a patient practicing nasal irrigation for a year and then discontinuing it for a year had only 62% decreased incidence of sinusitis in the discontinuation phase. Repeated saline use may wash away beneficial antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents from mucus and hence result in increased frequency of acute infection. Nasal irrigation is contraindicated in those having the complaint of frequent nasal bleed. So next time when you have a sinus infection you can think of nasal irrigation rather than relying on antibiotics. Benefits of Nasal Irrigation - It thins out mucus allowing its easy clearance through sinuses and nasal passages. - As it cleans mucus from the nasal passages, medications become more effective. - Improves coordination of cilia so they function effectively to trap bacteria and foreign particles and sweep them along with mucus. - Cleans allergens, irritants, bacteria, and viruses from nasal passage, minimizing their effect. - Decreases swelling in nose and increases airflow. A Rash of Shingles

The next time you are with family or friends, ask them how many people they know that have had shingles? I think you’ll be surprised at the high number, especially with an older crowd. Shingles is a nasty viral infection that causes a painful blistery rash. Since I knew no one who had shingles, it seemed to be another of those rare mysterious illnesses – until recently. First my cousin got it and then some of my friends. All were senior citizens who were miserably incapacitated for weeks and some for months. One person got it in her eye, which almost blinded her. These people implore everyone they know to get the shingles vaccine. With my awareness heightened, I began to take notice of a TV commercial about the vaccine that says 1 in 3 people will get shingles in their lifetime. Whoa! That got my attention. With odds like that I better watch out. I fired up my internet browser to get an education. Here are some highlights from the Mayo Clinic website: - Although shingles can occur anywhere on your body, it most often appears as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around either the left or the right side of your torso. While it isn’t a lifethreatening condition, shingles can be very painful. - Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you’ve had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles. Shingles is most common in people older than 50. The risk increases with age.

Some experts estimate that half the people who live to the age of 85 will experience shingles at some point in their lives. - The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of the varicella-zoster vaccine (Zostavax) for adults age 50 and older. Like the chickenpox vaccine, the shingles vaccine doesn’t guarantee you won’t get shingles. But this vaccine will likely reduce the course and severity of the disease. The people I know who got shingles said they were unaware of the condition. Their doctors never mentioned it - nor the vaccine - as mine had not mentioned anything to me. When I asked my young and very caring doctor about getting the shingles vaccine, he brightened up, saying it is a great idea. In fact he recently vaccinated his father. I wanted to know that if it’s such a great idea, why aren’t doctors suggesting it to all their elderly patients who are at such a high risk of getting shingles? He had no good answer other than to say it’s not life threatening and the vaccine, which costs about $250, is not usually covered by insurance. My wife and I both got the vaccination, gladly paying the $500 charge.

Bursting with Boldness

If you really want to make a statement in your garden…be bold! A burst of bright, vibrant, colorful plantings can be fun. Striking, loud colors can add excitement to your landscape and paint the way to another day beyond the concrete and clay. Listen to your neighbors say “Wow!” when they pass by your yard. The list of plants that can be used is endless; with so many choices from Alocasia to Zinnias. Recently on a trip to Wave Hill in the north Bronx, I was amazed by the abundance of big, bold plantings that abound in the display gardens. Tropical plants and annuals that are not winter hardy can be used to enhance a garden landscape from mid spring right through until late fall. Perennials, shrubs and trees can also take “center stage” when it comes to making a magnificent show of flowers, foliage, fruit or all of the above. Remember that foliage texture and color can be the perfect highlight and may offer more “staying power” than some flowering plants. You don’t necessarily need a large area to make a bold statement. A splash of color here and there with a simple theme can be more effective than some huge estate gardens that focus on formality. Perky patio planters can provide that burst of color for smaller landscapes where space is limited. Be daring and try something new each year for variety. Some of the “old standbys” that you’ve used in the past may work well for you while introducing a few new additions. Combining colors and textures that will complement each other is part of the fun in creating what you like. Get some ideas as you stroll through a garden center, botanical garden or park. I always like to try out new shade tolerant plants in my planters for the front of the house. Ferns, caladiums, coleus, fucshia, torenia,

begonias, and oxalis have all provided an abundance of color and texture throughout the summer. Ajuga and lamium are great for splashing over the sides of a container while acorus and carex act as nice accent grasses. Hakonechloa and Mexican Feather Grass also provide a cooling down effect with every breeze as their blades sway to and fro in the wind. Begonia alba provides an amazing fragrance and pig-skin begonia has an awesome texture. Rex and Angel Wing begonias have emerged as reliable performers. Hot colors such as orange, yellow, red and bright pink work great with chartreuse and gold foliage plants that will explode with color like a fireworks display. The “caliente” series of geraniums are as hot as the name implies both in color and popularity. The nursery where I work sells them out as soon as they come in. Let bold take hold in your garden and make it a fun and exciting way for yourself or the whole family to be proactive. Getting young children, grandchildren or students involved in starting a small garden area or planter may be just the inspiration and motivation they need. They can look forward to many years of enjoyment with a healthy hobby and getting back to nature while they escape from the high tech world that they are growing up in today. “Sow the Seeds” now and “Get Growing” for the future! BBQ Safety Tips Fire up the grill, bring on the steak, it is time to barbecue. You might think you know all you need to know about BBQ safety and grilling. We want your BBQ experience to be fun and safe for the entire family. On average there are over 9,000 home fires annually directly related to barbecuing. According to the National Fire Prevention Association; 16,000 people went to the emergency room and there was $80 million in property damage in 2012 associated with barbecuing. Follow these safety tips to ensure your BBQ experience goes off without any injury or damage. Home barbecue tips: General Safety • Never BBQ inside, in a garage, on the roof or on a second story deck. • Never leave your grill unattended. • If you’re using a charcoal grill, let the lighter fluid soak into the coals a few minutes before lighting them so that any vapors have time to evaporate. When you do light the coals, stand back! • Open the grill lid before you light it. • Don’t wear loose fitting clothing. • Keep a fire extinguisher outside or close by. • Make sure you use the grill 10 feet away from your house. • Have the BBQ close to a water source. •Allow grill to cool before placing in storage.

• Don’t let raw meat sit out long without being chilled or cooked. • Always wash your hands before and after handling food. Lava rocks are porous and can hold grease which can catch fire at worse and make for an uneven heating surface at best. • When you turn off a gas grill, remember to turn off the propane tank too. Always make sure that the barbecue is in a safe place, where children and pets won’t touch or bump into it. Remember that the barbecue will still be hot even after you finish cooking, anyone contacting the barbecue could be burned. Identifications and Business Success

Businesses are like people. They must have a reason for being. Another antique shop is simply... another antique shop. But... put your name in front of the store and it now has an identity. Ask yourself these four questions: * Who are you? * What's your name? * Does anybody know you? * Does anybody care? What pops into the mind of customers when they hear your company's name? How would you describe your business to a newly arrived resident to your community? If you listen carefully to other people, you will hear your business described in adjectives as if it were a "person." For example, "they're friendly... nice... they care about you"... OR "they're cold... unfeeling... uninterested... snobbish..." Comments may include the fact that you offer a particular service not available elsewhere. Perhaps your personnel is so "service-oriented," your customers are spoiled and simply "won't shop anywhere else." What you DO NOT want to be is a mirror image of your competition. You cannot make calling or coming into your business too desirable.

Michael Krasowitz is a painter and printmaker living in Huntington NY. His work deals with what he calls psychological abstraction, where the viewer finds their own personal stories within each work. Ferguson’s Castle W

hen people think of a castle in Huntington, everyone thinks of OHEKA. There was another castle, however, that was built in the hills of Huntington Bay in 1908. It was called, The Monastery, but most people referred to it as Ferguson’s Castle. Juliana Armour married New York City pathologist Farquhar Ferguson and together they had seven children. It was their dream to build a castle on Long Island’s North Shore. A site overlooking Huntington Harbor was chosen. Mrs. Ferguson, a convert to Catholicism, fell in love with the beautiful monasteries in Europe and modeled her home after one. Before the house was even constructed, Mr. Ferguson died suddenly. The best way to keep her husband’s memory alive was to continue the plans for their dream home. Construction was complete by 1911, and Mrs. Ferguson and her children moved into the white stucco, Spanish/ Italian style mansion. Mrs. Ferguson’s whole world revolved around her children and their friends. She was a very generous woman, and whatever her children had, she gave to their friends as well. It was not uncommon to see the children roller skating in the Grand Hall, or jumping onto the plush furnishings from the balconies. The house was also filled with animals who had full run of the house. She definitely wasn’t without her oddities. Mrs. Ferguson’s greatest hobby was collecting foreign tombstones that had once marked the

graves of young children. The stones were all over 300 years old. They were used throughout the house as decorative pieces, for benches and tables in the cloister gardens, in the floors and over the doorways to bedrooms. Shortly after her son Wallace died of illness and son Danforth on the front lines, Mrs. Ferguson reached her breaking point. She was so distraught that she had a wax dummy made in Wallace’s likeness. Every night her dinner table was set for two. Mrs. Ferguson would come down in her white flowing evening gown, then the wax dummy, also dressed in evening clothes, was wheeled in and would join her at the table. In 1970, Ferguson’s Castle, which had been left vacant and vandalized for years, was torn down. Only an old stone wall with entranceway, and a carriage house remain. During the years it was vacant, many who drove by at night claimed to see the figure of a woman wearing a long white evening gown, floating among the ruins.

The Art League of Long Island’s latest photography exhibit, “Structure: Within and Beyond” posed a challenge to photographers from the tri-state area to submit their interpretations of structure and design found in nature and the man-made world. Exhibition juror Karen Marks selected 52 photographs out of the 403 submissions from Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens, New Jersey, and upstate New York. The selected works on view explore structure and form from the simple to the grand, be it a humble shed or dazzling architectural design; or the living form captured in a moment in time. About the juror: Karen Marks is Exhibitions Director of Manhattan’s Howard Greenberg Gallery, one of the world’s leading photography galleries. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, Ms. Marks worked in the photography department of Swann Galleries, a New York auction house, for many years. For the past twentyfive years since leaving Swann she has built a career working for some of the most well respected photo galleries and dealers in the city. Her long and focused experience has made her a sought-after judge and curator of photography exhibitions. The exhibit runs June 2 through July 7. What the Heck is the Paper Bag? The Paper Bag is the World's Longest Running (and probably only) 70 piece rock band. The Paper Bag began as a song played by the Phil Gagliano Band in a basement in Hempstead, NY in 1973. The Bag band has performed annually in Long Island clubs since 1979 and will continue to perform until either the band or the audience stops showing up. The World Through Ward Hooper’s Eyes

Next month LaMantia Gallery will pay homage to longtime Northport resident and watercolorist Ward Hooper with a retrospective exhibition spanning 20 years. The paintings of the award-winning artist known for his vibrant use of color and loosely rendered brushstrokes can be found in both private and corporate collections across the country. According to coowner Robert Bluver, when James LaMantia first opened the gallery in 1990, the debut exhibit showcased Ward’s work. “We have a great history with him. He’s a prominent artist and our only watercolorist,” said Mr. Bluver, who is particularly fond of Ward’s color palette and his choice of perspective. “His work has an abstract feel.”

“Ward is a master of watercolor,” Mr. LaMantia said of the outstanding artist who has literally painted out of the lines color-wise for more than 30 years. “His style is playful, imaginative and the artistic license that he sometimes takes with colors furthers your appreciation.” Ward juggled dual careers as art director and award-winning design director for the J.C. Penney Company and vice president of the Coleman Group, one of America’s largest design firms, for more than three decades. Upon retiring, he pursued his passion for watercolor, and particularly enjoys painting “en plein air.” For the last ten years he has been instructing aspiring artists at the Art League of Long Island. Ward said that inspiration abounds in his “picture postcard village” of Northport, with many of his paintings centering around


the harbor dotted with sailboats and commercial fishing vessels, and Seymour’s historic boatyard. Other images focus on the seashore and fanciful Victorian painted ladies. His work resonates with a joyful exuberance for life and a profound appreciation of nature’s bounty. His talent is such that viewers can expect to see a familiar landmark from a new perspective or vicariously share Ward’s visual voyage of discovery during excursions to Italy, Maine, Puerto Rico and upstate New York. “I paint ‘wet on wet’ and the colors blend on the paper,” Ward said of the magical alchemy that ensues when he sets his brush in motion. Years of experience have made him acutely cognizant of the properties of individual colors and their degree of transparency or opaqueness in achieving the desired effect. As is their custom, LaMantia will be coupling the opening with a charitable fundraiser. Mr. Bluver, who is president of the local Kiwanis Club, said that a framed Ward Hooper watercolor will be raffled off to benefit Unicef ’s The Eliminate Project. “Kiwanis is an international organization which promotes children’s causes and The Eliminate program is striving to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus in developing countries,” Mr. Bluver indicated. trolling down Wall Street in Huntington Village gives you the feeling of being in the heart of town. The Hope Of Recovery

Hometown actress, Marisa Vitali, shot and starred in her film GRACE which took place in Northport, Long Island at Tim’s Shipwreck Diner. Vitali plays Janice, the head waitress and an addict newly clean in recovery. GRACE is inspired by Marisa’s first year clean from drug addiction. Celebrating 11 years clean this past January, she now shares her story of hope and recovery through this film. With addiction statistics increasing each year on Long Island and nationwide, it’s no wonder that the disease affects so many people in so many different ways. That’s why Marisa developed the character, Janice, a recovering addict who is faced with challenging, real life experiences, in order to show that any addict can find a new way to live by the choices they make. This film is an important piece in starting a dialogue as to how we can be a little more compassionate with one another surrounding this disease; how an addict in recovery can live life on life’s terms and not give up no matter what. The Flexitarian Diet Eat Italian at Porto Fino & Eat Mexican at Quetzalcoatl Another diet? Haven’t we already run through the spectrum of contemporary diets? There’s the Atkin’s Diet, the Macrobiotic Diet, the Anti-Inflammatory Diet, Vegan Diet, and so many more. There are the extreme eaters that we see on TV food shows chowing down on fast food, diner food, and mama’s food. Then there are the ascetics who extoll the virtues of a diet of only raw vegetables. Most of us never quite know what to eat, but in reality we are always trying to improve our eating habits. Enter the Flexitarian Diet--the latest concept of whole food eating --defined as essentially consisting of vegetables and fruits, fish, beans, eggs and milk—while allowing for an occasional meal of animal proteins. WebMD claims that the term flexitarian comes from a combination of the words “flexible” and “vegetarian”. Following a flexitarian diet simple means eating more plant-based meals and less meat. This way of eating is a balanced approach to optimal health and weight loss. Research shows that vegetarians tend to eat fewer calories, weigh less, and have lower body mass index (measure of body fat) than their meat-eating peers. If you begin to “flex” and swap out animal proteins for veggies and whole grains in your diet, you could expect weight loss, lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and cancer and a life that is an average of 3.6 years longer than your carnivorous counterparts. According to registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner, who wrote the book, The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease and Add Years To Your Life (2009), "Vegetarianism

Come Enjoy My Long Island Mansion How the Movies Imagined Long Island Living In 1933, when the average worker’s annual salary was about $1,600, the cost of traveling by train from California to New York was $120. That’s about $2,100 in 2013 dollars. People during the depression traveled less. Most west coast and mid-west citizens only knew of New York and Long Island from what they saw in movie theaters If you were a movie fan in Nevada, you wouldn’t want to see an Expressway traffic jam near the Glen Cove exit. You wanted to see the excessive mansions F. Scott Fitzgerald described in THE GREAT GATSBY. Here are some cinematic Long Island estates that stretched the truth, with let’s say, some imagination. THE CHEAT (1931) Elsa, a married, reckless spender (Tallulah Bankhead) is over her head in debt. She goes to her new friend, the wealthy Mr. Livingston (Irving Pichel playing the jazz-era cad to the hilt!) for a loan. For payback, he expects her to “be nice to him” (Irving says “nice” with a hiss!). In one scene, Livingston gives Elsa a tour of his Long Island mansion, which holds plenty of very large, evil-looking statues. Livingston shows her a hidden room that has a mandolin band playing in a garden, apparently round-the-clock. Imagine the mid-west movie-goer thinking most houses in Lloyd Neck and Huntington Bay come with these fun extras. DOCTOR X (1932) A cannibal serial killer is loose in Manhattan. The famous Dr. Xavier (Lionel Atwill, becoming a horror flick icon here) brings the leading cannibal suspects to his spooky hill-top estate located in Blackstone Shoals, Long Island. Dr. X’s place is insanely big, enough to hide hidden laboratories, a theater and twisting passageways. DOCTOR X is the first horror film photographed in color. It may be geographically questionable, but it’s such a fun film. HELLZAPOPPIN’ (1941) This totally batty comedy is sadly,

very hard to find. Olsen and Johnson was a movie comedy team who had no endearing qualities like Laurel and Hardy. Olsen and Johnson may have looked like bankers, but their surreal bullet-paced gags left audiences breathless. In HELLZAPOPPIN’ they help rich folks put on a massive stage show at a “typical” Long Island mansion. The larger than normal mansion here has a stage similar to Radio City Music Hall. With a polite Frankenstein Monster and a swing musical number in Hell, HELLZAPOPPIN’ is truly a must see. NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) Alfred Hitchcock’s wonderfully wild chase thriller-comedy has hero Cary Grant dodging the police and chasing vicious spies from Nassau County to Mount Rushmore. In the beginning of the film, the bad guys get Cary drunk and let him try to drive away from a Glen Cove mansion, and survive. There are several nail-biting moments when Cary’s car almost plunges off a cliff in Glen Cove. Movie westerns over-play the old west. In reality, the average western town in the 1870’s saw only about one murder a year. The same goes with the cinematic display of Long Island high life.

You want to see The Who?? Well, here is a story for YOU!

I have a very dear friend whose name is Neville Chesters. For those of you who might not know him, I’ll give you a quick little background on him. Neville was the Road Manager for the likes of The Who, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Mercy Beats, and also has worked with the Beatles, James Taylor, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake & Palmer and the list goes on and on. Neville hasn’t seen his old buddies from The Who in over twenty years. Recently, Pete Townshend came out with a new book, called “Who I Am: A Memoir”, and spoke very highly of Neville in one of the chapters in the book, and subsequently through friends, a connection was made. The Who extended an exclusive invitation to Neville and two guests to their next show. I received a call from Neville asking myself and my girlfriend, Janine Zarrilli, to accompany him for this once in a lifetime experience, to their upcoming February 2013 show at Nassau Coliseum. Being a musician/singer and TV host of The Maverick Soul Hour at Madhouse TV Studio’s, I have seen a lot of the great bands backstage and up close and personal, but never with the enormity of The Who. I have to send out a very special thanks to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry, for the way they made us feel welcomed and part of their family. From letting us park right next to their cars inside the Coliseum, to meeting all the band members, taking pictures, sitting in on a private sound check and even having dinner with the band. After dinner, we even had the honor of hanging out in Pete Townshend’s dressing room during the opening act, Vintage Trouble’s, performance. As if that

wasn’t enough, we were then escorted to front row seats to watch the concert, and we loved every minute of it!

I especially enjoyed the way the band incorporated the images of their former bandmates Keith Moon and John Entwhistle through a very large video screen and included them in the actual songs being played live on stage. But I must admit, the greatest part of the evening for me was sneaking peeks at Neville’s face and trying to read his thoughts of what he was thinking and feeling.They performed the entire Quadrophenia album which was absolutely amazing! And just when we thought we couldn’t have been more blessed, one of their people came and told us they were doing a “runner”, which means they were going to their cars right after the show from the stage, and we got to follow them right out before the rush of the crowd. It was the fastest I’ve ever gotten out of the Colisuem. It sure was a night I will never forget , and we owe it all to my wonderful friend , Mr. Neville Chesters! It’s only Rock n’ Roll and I LIKE IT! Tommy Maher.........
