It’s all part of the Winter Huntington Hot List of must-haves straight from Huntington. Huntington’s gorgeous Paramount Theater provided the backdrop for this stunning collection. While shaggy, longer bobs of full, healthy locks are vocal this winter, rockstar crops that are buzzed in back with texture and height on top are also very hot. Natural waves take center stage in longer looks. Bangs are back with edgy, jagged fringe. These compliment winter’s funky leopard prints, layered see-through tops full of shimmer, skintight leather pants and above-the-knee skirts climbing ever higher. I have one question for everyone: How is your new years resolution going? Have you stuck with whatever it is you have pledged to do? I used to love making my new years resolutions but as time goes on I realize that waiting until the new year to decide to make positive changes only made me procrastinate in getting things done. So, I have changed my thinking and I am no longer making new years resolution. Instead I am making REVOLUTIONS!! The definition of revolution is is a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time. A revolution can be made any time, any where about any thing you choose. So whether you are following your resolution or not, make time to make those important changes now. Stop making excuses! Now if your resolution was to eat healthy and lose weight and you have not done that, I am here to tell you it is ok. Don’t look back on what you see as a failed attempt to be healthy and fit which will make you feel worse and want to give up. What is not ok is continuing on the same path of self sabatoge. You can start today. Yes today. Go out and take a walk or go to the gym or workout to a home video or youtube a fitness workout and do it in your living room. Whatever type of workout you want to do, just do it NOW.

Eating healthy is the other crucial piece of weight loss success. You must be aware of what you are eating, how many calories, the ingredients in the foods you eat and you must burn more calories than you consume. My 5 most important tips for you to achieve your health and fitness revolution is this: 1. Schedule your workout days on your weekly calender now. Treat it as any other appointment you have that day and don’t miss or cancel it. 2. Do your grocery shopping on Sunday and prepare your meals and snacks for the week. 3. Pack your food for the day so you always have healthy snacks with you and never have to eat out or on the run. 4. Fill a water bottle and keep it with you drinking it all day long. 5. Eat 5 meals per day: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner. 6. Eat every 3-4 hours.

Cheers to being healthy and fit in 2012!!

How Should I Manage My Retirement Plan? Employer-sponsored retirement plans are more valuable than ever. The money in them grows tax-deferred until it is withdrawn at retirement. Distributions from a taxdeferred retirement plan, such as a 401(k) plan, are taxed as ordinary income and may be subject to an additional 10-percent federal tax penalty if withdrawn prior to age 59 ½. And contributions to a 401(k) plan actually reduce your taxable income. Conventional wisdom says if you have several years until retirement, you should put the majority of your holdings in stocks. Stocks have historically outperformed other investments over the long term. That has made stocks attractive for staying ahead of inflation. Of course, past performance does not guarantee future results. The stock market has the potential to be extremely volatile. The return and principal value of stocks fluctuate with changes in market conditions. Is it a safe place for your retirement money? Or should you shift more into a money market fund offering a stable but lower return? And will the instability in the markets affect the investments that the sponsoring insurance company uses to fund its guaranteed interest contract? If you’re participating in an employersponsored retirement plan, you probably have the option of shifting the money in your plan from one fund to another. You can reallocate your retirement savings to reflect the changes you see in the marketplace. Here are a few guidelines to help you make this important decision. Consider Keeping a Portion in Stocks In spite of its volatility, the stock market may still be an appropriate place for your investment dollars, particularly over the long term. And retirement planning is a long-term proposition. Since most retirement plans are funded by automatic payroll deductions, they achieve a concept known as dollar cost averaging. Dollar cost averaging can take some of the sting out of a descending market.

Dollar cost averaging does not ensure a profit or prevent a loss. Such plans involve continuous investments in securities regardless of the fluctuating prices of such securities. You should consider your financial ability to continue making purchases through periods of low price levels. Dollar cost averaging can be an effective way for investors to accumulate shares to help meet long-term goals. Diversify - Diversification is a basic principle of investing. Spreading your holdings among several different investments may lessen your potential loss in any one investment. Do the same for the assets in your retirement plan. Keep in mind, however, that diversification does not guarantee against investment loss; it is a method used to manage investment risk. Find Out About the Guaranteed Interest Contract - A guaranteed interest contract offers a set rate of return for a specific period of time, and it is typically backed by an insurance company. Generally, these contracts are very safe, but they still depend on the security of the company that issues them. If you’re worried, take a look at that company’s rating. The four main insurance company rating agencies are A.M. Best, Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s, and Fitch Ratings. A.M. Best ratings are based on financial conditions and operating performance; Fitch Ratings, Moody’s, and Standard & Poor’s ratings are based on claims-paying ability. You should be able to find copies of these guides at your local library. Periodically Review Your Plan’s Performance - You are likely to have the chance to shift assets from one fund to another. Use these opportunities to review your plan’s performance. The markets change. You may want to adjust your investments based on your particular situation. Avoid Winter Weight Gain 1. Keep a Journal 2. Drink Lots of Water 3. Eat Your Veggies First

I

t seems like just yesterday that it was the first day of summer. But as the winter solstice has come and gone and the daylight hours start to wane again, how do we maintain all the great work we did losing weight for the summer, as we enter into yet another new year and end of the holiday season? One of the biggest obstacles to weight maintenance or weight loss is our hectic schedules. As another year starts make sure you are keeping track of what you are eating. By keeping a nutrition log, it will force you to practice mindful eating so that you are aware of what you are putting into your mouth. When we are busy with school or work or family obligations, we start to slip into mindless eating. This habit of “mindless eating” can be detrimental to our waist line and thus our health. More often than not, my patients are astonished at how much they are eating in between meals and they only notice these things once they’ve started journaling their food intake. So, first rule of healthy weight maintenance and weight loss is to keep track of what you are eating and practice mindful eating…not mindless eating. The second rule is to keep water by your side at all times. Frequently, people eat because they are thirsty instead of hungry. Again, the mindful eating habit will help you to realize you are thirsty and not hungry. But, keeping water or green tea by your side at all times will help to ensure that you are well-hydrated throughout the day and will naturally help you sidestep this dietary pitfall.

22 • village connection • january 2012

The third rule is to eat all your vegetables first at every meal. This way, you will ensure that you get maximum intake of necessary vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients at every meal. You will also get all the fiber and water from the vegetables to help make you full, so that you will eat less of the less healthy foods on your plate. Also, since it takes longer to chew all the fibrous vegetables, it will allow you the time to digest and for your brain to realize you are already mostly full…thus eating less of the other more calorically dense foods. So, by simply keeping a food log, drinking fluids throughout the day, and eating vegetables first at every meal, you will be taking the guess work out of healthy weight maintenance and weight loss. This will free up your mind and time to deal with your school work and your work/family obligations…while keeping your waist line in its summer tip-top shape!

Large

LIVIN’

The American home may be shrinking, but not the Great American Dream. Americans are still living large, just doing so in smaller spaces. To some trend-watchers, the downscaling of the American home comes as good news. Architects, designers and social observers say our willingness to resize our floor space means Americans are rethinking the way we really live and how we use whatever space we do have. Home, they say, has become less about impressing others and more about making ourselves happy. And since we are mostly baby boomers - that tidal wave of Americans born between 1946 and 1964 - who have long been accustomed to getting what we want, happiness is often defined in terms of luxuries and personal amenities. This new definition of luxury includes top-quality, mostly natural materials, careful attention to architectural details like natural wood window frames and mouldings. Luxury comes from the materials we surround ourselves with. Beauty comes from natural materials. You can see where they come from - in the grain, the veining. The more natural the materials, like real hardwoods and granite, the more content you are. There's a quality you can't name, but you can feel it." Here are some suggestions for the best way to enjoy the shrinking and changing American home. Create a room within a room - Lay hardwood on the diagonal to set off special architectural features. Create a "rug" under a dining table with an inset frame of contrasting hardwood. Use a sectional sofa to delineate an intimate seating area within an open floor plan. Find a standing wood-panel screen to create

privacy or isolate a work space, say, in a bedroom office area. Make it sustainable. Living green is a high priority for the antiMcMansion generation. As Susanka sees it, we should think of the 21st-century house as "a well-tailored suit: you use less material, but it fits you perfectly."

A Northport Mystery

Frank Yamaki lived in Northport for less than twenty years, but he left the community an invaluable legacy and an unsolvable mystery. After emigrating from Japan in the 1880s, Yamaki came to Northport to work as a cook. He prospered, became a popular member of the community, and in 1895 bought Benedict Warner’s photo studio on Woodbine Avenue. His work as a photographer created his legacy to the community. He was successful commercially doing numerous portraits and wedding photos, but he also produced about 300 photographic plates that visually documented much of Northport Village at the turn of the Twentieth Century. In 1979, Stephen Cavagnaro donated these prints to the Northport Historical society. The Society then published a selection of the prints in a volume entitled Photographs of Old Northport. This slim volume provides a detailed glimpse into the life of the Village over a hundred years ago. In contrast to the clarity of this legacy,

stands the dark mystery of Yamaki’s marriage and death within five months. On October 1, 1905, Yamaki and Belle Pauline Brown revealed to her parents that they had been secretly married on July 16, three days after they had met and twelve days before they had announced their engagement. Following a brief honeymoon, they moved into the Browns’ Northport home. Then, on November 6, Yamaki went missing. Later that week, the Long Islander reported that he “had closed his place of business…telling his wife he was going to King’s Park, and has not been seen since.” On November 20, his wife and her family moved back to their Brooklyn residence. On Thanksgiving Day, a hunter came across Yamaki’s body in the woods in East Northport. The coroner later ruled his death a suicide by poisoning. The cause of Frank Yamaki’s mysterious death has never been determined. Bankruptcy has been suggested, but by most accounts the photography business was successful, and according to an interview with his mother-in-

law that appeared in The New York Times on the day of his funeral, he received a monthly check from Japan for $1500. Mrs. Brown further suggested that it was a threat of assassination for having disgraced the emperor by not returning to Japan at the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War that drove him to take his own life. A note addressed to his wife found on Yamaki’s body further confounded the issue. It read:

Come visit our new jewelry department featuring the unique Kameleon jewelry line.

My Dear Belle: Forgive me for doing this. I can’t stand it no longer. This will end all. Good bye. Please forgive me. Belle, I can not and will not tell. With this final message, the man who provided a definitive look into the life of his times in Northport also bequeathed to later generations an intriguing, enduring mystery.

Bob Little is a long-time resident of the Northport area who greatly enjoys delving into the community’s fascinating history and writing his column for the Northport Historical Society.

Make New Year's resolutions close to home

As each year comes to a close, people begin to make resolutions - typically, vowing to start something new in the year ahead. Making resolutions is easy; the hard part is keeping them. Start 2012 on the right foot with this list of easy home updates and tips to help conquer your New Year's resolutions. Develop better eating habits Research shows that people tend to eat less when surrounded by the color blue. Repaint your kitchen or dining room in a blue hue to help naturally suppress your appetite. And, painting is a great way to tone your arms if you also resolve to get in shape. Once the paint dries, clean out your pantry and replace any highcalorie or fatty foods with healthier options. Help the environment Growing concern for the environment prompts many people to resolve to be more green. Your refrigerator runs all day, every

Phone: 631-385-4334 Fax: 631-385-0866

day, which accounts for a large percentage of your home's energy usage. Keeping your refrigerator's thermostat set between 38 and 42 degrees will help save energy and keep your food from spoiling. Give to others or volunteer Clean out your closets and collect any gently used items you and your family no longer use or need. There are a number of national and local organizations that accept clothing donations; some will even pick up the items directly from your home. Learn something new One of the most common resolutions centers around conquering a fear or trying something new. Take a look at your home and challenge yourself to tackle home improvement projects on your own. Finish an unfinished basement, build an outdoor play space for the kids or renovate a bathroom. Not only will you conquer any do-it-yourself fears, but any revamp of your home will only add to its value and resale potential. Keeping New Year's resolutions can certainly be a challenge, so it's important to set yourself up for success. First, set specific and realistic goals; and don't be scared to break bigger goals into a series of smaller steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Most important, have a strategy for setbacks - we all slip up from time to time, but the key is to get back on track. It's been said that four out of five people who make New Year's resolutions eventually break them. Prove the statistics wrong and make this the year you keep your resolutions.

Creatures, Great and

Veterinarian James Herriot’s semi-biographical novel, “All Creatures Great and Small,” has delighted readers for decades because of his heartfelt appreciation for animals in all their diversity. The same can be said for prize-winning photographer Mike DiRenzo, a teacher in the South Huntington School district, who has been at the helm of the Huntington Camera Club for the past two years. In 2010, Mike’s fanciful photograph, “Bubble Boy” (in which the iridescence of a huge soap bubble blown by a young boy echoes the rainbow of colors of nearby tulips) took first place in the Town of Huntington’s Tulip Festival Photo Contest. Other prestigious accolades include two Leonard Victor Memorial Awards (the highest honor accorded by the Photographic Federation of Long Island) and a gold medal from the internationally-renowned Photographic Society of America. Although most celebrated for his landscape and lighthouse images showcasing captivating sunrises and sunsets, Mike has a gift for capturing the wonders of the animal kingdom. In order to convey the essence of his subjects in their natural habitats, Mike photographs them head-on at eye level. Lighting is an all-important consideration in capturing the glorious color for which his photographs have become known, and “timing is everything,” Mike indicated. Award-winning shots include a ‘smiling’ amphibian which Mike dubbed “Kermit Da Froggie,” and “Eye-Opener,” which appears to portray a tender moment between two macaques but was actually an exercise in grooming. Both were taken at the Riverhead Aquarium; the latter was chosen as photo of the month by Popular Photography.com. To see more of Mike’s work, visit mikedirenzophotography.com. Elise Pearlman has been covering arts and leisure for seven years. Her work has appeared in Newsday and Long Island Pulse Magazine as well as in various local newspapers. She has met and written about many celebrity authors, including Alan Alda, Jane Fonda, Candace Bushnell, Rosie O’Donnell, Caroline Kennedy and Barbara Walters. She creates the popular “There’s No Place Like Northport” calendar with her husband. She can be reached at LotusElise1@aol.com.

safe winter driving tips It’s important that you take precautions while traveling during the winter months. Here are some tips that will go a long way toward ensuring that you reach your destination safely. BEFORE YOU DRIVE: •Get your vehicle tuned up prior to the winter season.  •Make sure windshield wipers, batteries, tires and defrosters are working and in good condition. •Keep at least half a tank of gasoline in your vehicle at all times. •Ensure your car has basic winter driving equipment such as a scraper and brush, small shovel, jumper cables, road flares, tow chain and a bag of sand or cat litter for tire traction. •Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, gloves, hats, food, water, flashlight with batteries, and any needed medication. •Warm up your vehicle in accordance with operating instructions, and remove all ice and snow from windows and vehicle surfaces (including the roof) before starting your trip. •Plan your trips carefully, listen to the local weather reports, and the National Weather Service for weather conditions predicted along your travel route. WHILE DRIVING: •Always buckle your seat belt and require your passengers do the same. •Reduce speeds. •Allow for extra travel time or consider delaying trips if the

weather is inclement. •Don’t use your hand-held cell phone while driving, as mandated by law. •Use your headlights, as required by law. •Be alert and allow more distance between your vehicle and others. •Use your brakes carefully. Brake early and carefully as it takes more time and distance to stop in adverse conditions. •Don’t use “cruise control” in wintry conditions. •Keep to the right except to pass, using turn signals to alert other drivers of your intentions. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: •Do not stop within travel lanes. If the vehicle can be driven, motorists should travel to the nearest exit or safe location. If the vehicle is inoperable, activate four-way flashers, and stay inside the vehicle until authorized personnel arrive to provide assistance.  •Should an emergency occur, please call 911.  •Never walk along the roadway. You are a major reason why the Huntington Arts Council has reached its 48th year of service to our community. We ask for your help with a gift to our Annual Appeal campaign. Due to recent events, the Huntington Arts Council's programming is in jeapardy. As you know, the access to funds continues to diminish, and we are faced with draconian cuts that support our many programs. These cuts directly impact the popular Huntington Summer Arts Festival, and will eliminate a staff position, and alter our publication, Arts Cultural News, and its large distribution. For 48 years the Huntington Arts Council (HAC) has served our community with programs that strengthen the capacity and sustainability for arts creation, education, display and performance art, and the connection between artist and audience. In addition to its services to more than 600 member cultural organizations and individual artist members, HAC is the official arts coordinating agency for the Town of Huntington, and has designation as a "Primary Institution" by the New York State Council on the Arts, a title meaning "vital to the cultural life of New York State." Please help us reclaim our programs and help us continue to serve more than one million Long Islanders each year. For every dollar we receive, 80 cents goes directly to supporting our high quality programs, including: • “Journey” arts-in-education programs in seven school districts • Huntington Summer Arts Festival, which celebrates its 47th Season in 2012 • Exhibition programs at the Main Street Petite Gallery in Huntington Village and the Arttrium in Melville • Arts Cultural News – distributed 3 times a year, full of arts and cultural content plus event listings from more than 100 individual artists and arts organizations • Funding support to local artists and arts organizations through the Decentralization program, Local Capacity Building for schools from the New York State Council on the Arts, and Regrants from JPMorgan Chase Thank you for considering a gift to the Huntington Arts Council in celebration of our 48 years and in support of our exciting future. Your donation of any size demonstrates community support to all our funders and program partners. Sincerely, Andrea Maire & Diana Cherryholmes President & Executive Director P.S. Commercials, Commercials, Everywhere

I

’ve always hated TV commercials, but since they paid for my favorite shows I accepted them. In the early days of television - when TV was free, I watched 4 minutes of commercials in a half hour show. Today however, in addition to paying a cable company for my TV signal, those 4 minutes of commercials have grown to an astounding 10 minutes or one third of a show’s time. Let’s say if on average you watch three hours of TV a night, that exposes you to 60 minutes of commercials. That’s more than enough shouting and jingles to drive someone (me) insane. Over the years as more and more TV time was given over to commercials I found myself switching channels to view any show in progress, which drove my wife crazy. That was then. Now for a little bit more money each month I have a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) which allows me to easily record all my favorite shows AND fast forward through commercials. The DVR solved my TV problems but commercials on radio bugged me too until recently when I bought a car with commercial-free satellite radio. During the three

month free trial period I was sold. I liked it so much that I even bought a satellite radio for my home. With commercials expunged from our home lives my wife and I make an extra effort not to arrive at t h e movie theater early for the “preshow entertainment.” Nick Radesca is a volunteer at SeniorNet FSL, a not-forprofit learning center dedicated to training seniors in computer technology (seniornethuntington.org). Easy tips for fast and fun snow removal

THE LARGEST AUDI DEALER IN SUFFOLK COUNTY

Audi of Huntington

When you look outside, does the thought of snow leave you dreaming of spring? Since winter isn't going anywhere any time soon, you might as well make the most of the outdoors. When you need to remove snow from your driveway and walkways, some simple tips will make the task easier. You might even enjoy getting outdoors for a bit to breathe the crisp air and delight in the wonderment of winter. Groups make snow fun. While the chore of keeping walkways and driveways clean traditionally falls on fathers, there's no reason the whole family can't help out. Once snow has stopped falling, bundle the whole family up (appropriate attire is essential) and get them outside. Adults and older teens can handle the heavier shoveling tasks, while young children can help by sweeping light snow with brooms and spreading salt and sand. Play it safe. Straining your back while engaging in snow removal can leave you miserable. Before you set foot outside, make sure you have a proper snow shovel. Never use a garden spade or regular shovel to try to move snow; you'll only make the job harder. Remember to lift with your knees, avoid making twisting motions with your back, and push snow, rather than lift it, whenever possible. Plow through the pile with a sport utility vehicle. Plowing is the fastest, easiest way to clear your driveway, but until now you may have relied on professionals to do it for you or skipped it altogether because of the expense

and inconvenience of waiting for the plow guy to show up. Some snow plow manufacturers are now making products that will work on most light pickups and SUVs. With no electrical or hydraulic moving parts, it's easy to install and use, reasonably priced, and allows you to quickly and easily move snow while in the comfort of your own vehicle. Enjoy the snow and wait until the storm has passed. You might think that you're reducing your workload later by shoveling while it's still snowing, but you're really just making more work for yourself. Wait until the snowstorm is over before you even think about snow removal. Allow yourself some time to enjoy the pristine snow with your family while looking out the window or get outside and build a snowman with the kids. Take frequent breaks. You might be tempted to just push through and get the job done as quickly as possible, but doing so means risking injury or exhaustion. It's important to give your body a rest. Snow removal works not only the muscles in your back, arms and legs, but bright sunlight reflected on snow can strain your eyes as well. So work for awhile, then take a 10 or 15-minute break. Drink a hot chocolate, check on the game, poke the fire, and take the time to relax before heading back out into the cold. Make sure to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water as well. Winter weather will be around for a while longer, but with some caution, the right tools and a sense of fun, you can get through it, and ensure your driveway and sidewalks are safe.

hile many people today are looking to downsize their homes, they are also looking to upsize their amenities to help them enjoy every inch of their homes. And, while many different generations are following this trend, Boomers are a unique group, looking to enjoy their smaller nest now that the kids have flown the coop - yet ensure that their homes are filled with the many amenities they'll require for their golden years. Anything but basic baths While they may purchase a smaller floor plan, mature adults are looking for ways to turn ordinary rooms into extraordinarily indulgent experiences. In the bath, that means the ultimate spa experience - from elaborate showers to heated floors and towel warmers. But when it comes to the bathroom, it's just as important to keep it safe. Luckily, safe can also equate to stylish. Try installing comfortable seating for the shower with a beautiful fold-down shower seat made of teak and aluminum; or updating common bath accessories such as a paper holder, towel bar or shelf with a new integrated version that combines each accessory with a grab bar for added safety. Kitchens that cook ... and more Different generations have very specific desires in terms of creating a kitchen to meet their needs, and boomers are looking for kitchens with amenities that will assist with entertaining. These upgrades may include cooktops with special-purpose features, such as a built-in grill or wok; commercial or professional-grade

appliances; a built-in coffee pot connected directly to plumbing or an oven that dramatically reduces cooking times without microwaves. Bedrooms that sizzle Mature adults still know how to spice up their bedroom with hot amenities, including fireplaces, heated mattress pads and largecapacity warming cabinets for blankets, robes, towels and clothing. Convenience-based bedroom trends include a laundry room off of the master suite, remote-controlled window treatments and voice controlled lighting and electronics, making your mature boudoir much more magical than your childhood bedroom. The greater outdoors For homeowners who are tired of the hassles and hazards of snow removal, driveway heating systems are an ideal amenity. Radiant driveway heating systems provide heat similar to indoor infloor heating systems. Heat is delivered with either electric cable (electric systems) or by hot water pumped through plastic tubing (hydronic systems) compacted in the surface. Most driveway heating systems have automatic smart sensors that turn the systems on when it begins to snow, providing great consistency and reliability for snow removal, whether you're home or not. Regardless of the size of your home, whether you build new or buy used, filling your empty nest with hot amenities will help to make your golden years as good as gold.

Hardscaping Design Trends Hardscaping, in the practice of landscaping, refers to the paved areas like streets & sidewalks, large business complexes & housing developments. Typical smallscale, residential hardscaping examples include patios, pool decks, walkways and driveways. Retaining walls are often used to create boundaries between hardscapes and earth landscaping features, or softscapes. Currently, hardscaping trends in America are seeing a revival of classic Mediterranean design from Spanish to Italian styles, driven by renowned European landscape architects, designers and specifiers. This inspired style shift includes pavements consisting of larger scale pavers and shapes having more delineated surface textures. Perhaps, this Mediterranean movement in landscape architecture is influenced by the sprawling, centuries-old piazzas found in European landscapes. However, larger scale pavers can also be found as elements in classic English gardens, on verandas, streetscapes and walkways. As the fashion statement implies: “What goes around, comes around.” Manufacturers are introducing extra large, interlocking concrete pavers and mega-size slab pavers as an alternative to natural bluestone, granite and poured concrete with stamped patterns that simulate large shapes. Some of these products make use of cast stone manufacturing methods, but all are considered to be far less expensive than natural stone and offer durability and color options that rival and exceed their natural stone counterparts. For even more creative possibilities, designers are also bordering their larger scale paver patterns with contrasting shapes, textures and colors. From a design perspective, larger shapes in a running bond or randomly-placed pattern can often make an outdoor space look and feel larger much like what larger tiles will achieve in an indoor flooring application. Also consider a straight or diagonal pattern for varying

effects. Shapes can be arranged collectively or individually in various patterns to achieve an overall impression of natural stone but with a new sense of geometric scale and newfound versatility. Incorporating a manufactured wall system, decorative or functional columns and outdoor living products with similar attributes regarding color and rock textures can further enhance the final effect. In addition to a natural stone appearance, a more pronounced surface texture can also contribute to this expansive, visual effect. For optimum results, textures should always be placed in a different direction than on the paver shape it follows. A professional contractor or landscape designer can assist you in choosing the best pattern, color texture and border for your project. In closing, it should come as no surprise that European landscape designers are dictating what’s in vogue. After all, interlocking concrete pavers originated in Europe decades ago while interlocking pavers of natural stone date back to Roman times. An example of this is the renowned Appian Way (Via Appia) one of the earliest and most strategic Roman roads. Many parts of the original road, which date back to 312 BC have been preserved and are now used by cars. To this day the Via Appia contains the longest stretch of straight road in Europe, totaling 62 km (39.67776 miles).
