Cover Artist
Frank Latorre
Frank Latorre, Long Island-based artist has worked in a wide variety of art mediums throughout his career. Starting in the early 70's, he began custom airbrushing motorcycles, vans, boats and cars. Many of his creations won trophies and awards for the vehicles' owners and his work has been published in many car and motorcycle magazines, including Easyriders, Iron Horse and Hot Rod. In the early 1980s, Frank became interested in the art of sandblasted glass and soon mastered the art of etching and carving glass. His work has been recognized and mentioned in publications such as The New York Times, Newsday and The Southampton Press. Many of his works can be seen decorating fine homes and restaurants across Long Island. Airbrush painting on canvas and hard board became the next area of interest, and, combining his two loves of art and Blues music, Frank produced a series of portraits of great Blues and Rock legends such as Jimi Hendrix and BB King. His freehand style of airbrushing has given these photo realist portraits a ghostly effect. In the early 90s, wall murals became, and continue to be, another area of Frank's expertise. He has decorated rooms, stairways and halls in fine homes and restaurants across the East Coast . Subjects range from Italian

landscapes and faux windows in Italian restaurants and private residences to an old-fashioned drivein scene for a family entertainment room to forest fantasies in children's rooms. If a client can dream it up, Frank will produce it! For the past few years, Frank has concentrated on acrylic painting and has produced a number of diverse series. Large and colorful butterflies has been one favorite, followed by whimsical women's portraits - large canvases with wide strokes of vibrant color accentuating the faces. One of these portraits was recently on the cover of the 50th anniversary Dan's Papers. Moonbeams, local landscapes and seascapes and ocean-related subjects are all part of Frank's current output. The ocean beaches and dunes of eastern Long Island are an unending source of inspiration for him. There is no subject he won't attempt and he welcomes all commissions. And for those who would like to be a part of the art experience, Frank also offers painting classes at Art & Soul. Frank's work earned him the "Westhampton Artist of the Year" 2011 award and he was chosen "Favorite Long Island Artist" 2010 by Gormusart, an association of gourmet chefs, musicians and artists. 5 REASONS YOU ARE NOT LOSING WEIGHT
I have helped thousands of my clients lose weight and keep it off. I have seen every mistake you can make when it comes to eating clean. Stop dieting and start eating real, clean, pure food and you will change your healthy and your body. 1. You are eating too much! You need to burn more calories than you consume however you want to make sure you are eating enough. You can purchase a calorie tracker like a Body Bugg or FitBit to get an idea of how many calories you burn daily. 2. You are eating too little! You dont want to have a calorie deficit of more than 500 calories daily as this will cause your metabolism to slow down. The general guideline is for women to eat a minimum of 1500 calories daily and men to eat a minimum of 1800-2000 calories. This varies tremendously based on your weight, body fat, level of exercise and any medical issues you may have but you can use it as a guideline. 3. You are eating too much sugar. Fruits and veggies are fine!! Eat them all day long!! You want to stay away from added sugar. Look on the ingredient list of the foods you eat and sugar (and any form of sugar) should not be on the list. If it absolutely has to be then make sure its not in the first 6 ingredients. 4. You are not exercising! Get 30 minutes of
village connection • january 2016
intense exercise in 3-5 times per week. This will allow you to eat more calories, strengthen your muscles , build muscle tissue which will burn more calories and body fat. 5. You are cutting carbohydrates! You need clean healthy carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables and small amounts of whole grains including quinoa and brown rice for fiber. The only carbohydrates you want to cut are muffins, donuts, cookies, cake, breads etc. They are all sugar. So get to the grocery store and fill up your cart with veggies, fruits, fish, lean meats, chicken, beans, oatmeal , quinoa and any pure food that falls into these categories. And get moving!! go for a 30 minute power walk or do an exercise video at home. But do something!! Get your body moving every day and feed it well and you will love the way you feel and look! GNARLY KARMA BRINGING THEIR
FOLKSY JAM ROCK FUSION AND
GOOD VIBES TO NYC’S “THE BITTER END” SATURDAY, JANUARY 23RD
Long Island Based Foursome to Play First Show of the New Year at the Legendary Venue On The Heels of Their Debut Album Release “Classic breeze” In a world of ever-growing music genres and subgenres it can often be a hard sell for band’s attempting to mix a lot of different influences while still keeping unique elements to their sound that make them stand out. For Long Island’s own Gnarly Karma however, this seems fairly effortless in regards to their debut album “Classic Breeze”released via iTunes in late September of this year. Now, as the band heads into 2016, you’ll have your chance to catch them Saturday, January 23rd at New York City’s The Bitter End- 147 Bleecker St, New York, NY! The group consisting of members Mike Renert (Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica), Jarrod Beyer (Drums, village connection • january 2016and Billy Hanley Percussion), Ryan McAdam (Bass),
(Alto & Tenor Saxophone, Keyboard, BGV's) brings a wide and varied range of influences to the table equating to their unique sound, which is most often associated with that of Dave Matthews Band, Sublime, and Mumford & Sons, but not restricted by genre. Originally starting in 2012 with Renert and Beyer, McAdam and Hanley later came into the mix having gone to school together with Beyer, who’d also performed with McAdam in Alt band “We Love Radio”. Though the “outer layer” of their music could be most closely associated with the folksy “jam” elements of bands like DMB, Mumford, or even O.A.R., a more unique style mixing a harder acoustic-punk, post-hardcore edge in many of the
songs off “Classic Breeze” makes it evident that-like many bands often pigeonholed by genres-there’s more to find when you keep peeling. With songs like the acoustic driven “Neptune” evoking Jimmy Eat World’esque or even Taking Back Sunday comparisons, “Directions” could be more closely associated with that of Dave Matthews through not only Hanley’s eloquent horn arrangement but Renerts vocals as well. A tune like “Please Come Home” brings these elements full circle with its catchy chorus “Don’t ask me where I’m going // Don’t ask me where I’ve been” with overdubbed crowd vocals making the true live band experience unmistakeable. With so many musical elements making up the true core of Gnarly Karma, the band has said of
both past and upcoming performances “We give it our all at every show, and do everything in our power to make sure the people that come to see us feel our energy and contribute to it”. And with “Classic Breeze” having debuted earlier this year, you can kick off the new year and bring some of your own Gnarly Karma and positivity to see them rock The Bitter End on Saturday, January 23rd at 147 Bleecker St, New York, NY! Superfood Kale Salad with Avocado Lime Dressing Makes 2-3 servings Prep time 45 minutes. Kale is one of the most popular superfoods, full of all-star nutrients to help jump start you into a healthier new year. This warming salad is perfect for wintertime, with roasted vegetables, quinoa, and a creamy avocado dressing. It's completely vegan, paleo, gluten free, soy free, and grain free, but packed with delicious flavor that's good for you too! This recipe makes about 2-3 servings, so you can make it ahead of time to have a few days of lunches or to share with your whole family. Ingredients for the salad: 1 head of lacinato (Dino) kale 1 sweet potato 1 red pepper 1/2 cup cooked quinoa seasoned with salt and pepper Ingredients for the dressing: 1 avocado 1/2 cup raw cashews 3/4 cup water 1 tbsp lime juice 1/2 clove garlic Pinch of salt 1. Wash the sweet potato and red pepper, and preheat oven to 425F. 2. Using a large chef's knife, cut the sweet potato
village connection • january 2016
into strips (skin on) and toss with olive oil. Cut the red pepper in half, then remove stem and seeds with small knife. Place the potatoes and peppers (inside face down) on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. 4. Roast red pepper halves and sweet potato strips at 425F for 30 minutes. The skin of the red pepper should blister, and the sweet potatoes should be soft enough to pierce with a fork. Once peppers are done, cut into slices. 5. While the peppers and potatoes are roasting, prepare the kale: first, wash all the leaves and rinse well to remove any dirt. Next, de-stem the kale by pinching the base of the stem with one hand, and using your thumb and forefinger of the other hand to push the leaves up and away from the stem. 7. Massage the kale by drizzling a bit of olive oil over the leaves in a salad bowl and kneading them like bread dough for 2 minutes, until they become soft and slightly wilted. 8. To make the dressing, combine all ingredients in a high speed blender or food processor and process until smooth. 9. Add peppers, potatoes, and quinoa to the kale in the salad bowl. Toss with dressing and serve. Perri Cohn is the founder and author of Life Gone Vegan, a blog dedicated to sharing vegan and allergyfriendly recipes, tips, and reviews. MIND AND MATERIAL
A Limitless Creative Outpouring With Hardscaping Luc de Clapiers, an 18th- century French essayist, said, “The most absurd and reckless aspirations have sometimes led to extra ordinary success.” When I began my career in hardscaping in 1984, the better part of my day was spent educating professional and consumer communities about interlocking concrete pavements. The idea of also designing an “outdoor living room” complete with a permanent, open air kitchen instead of the shaky, charcoalloaded barbecues; pizza ovens with features that pay homage to ancient cooking cultures; and outdoor fireplaces that mimic the charm of indoor varieties, would have been to me, somewhat of an absurd thought. But by reason of the advances from many hardscape product manufacturers coupled with the demands and influences of creative-thinking landscape architects and hardscape contractors, with of course input from consumer groups, the industry has evolved and reinvented itself. Thusly, a spirited amalgamation of motivated product development has opened front and back doors for homeowners to create a world of opportunity in landscape design,

more durable and earth-friendly pavements, and fully-featured outdoor living spaces. Reach For Your Very Own Creative Toolbox With the arrival of a new year along with visions of an upcoming spring popping into our thought waves, January is an ideal time to start the wheels turning to transform some or all of your outdoor spaces. It’s a perfect period, without timeline pressures, to explore the many new and triedand-true hardscaping products that leading-edge producers have brought to the forefront. Today’s diverse lifestyles and individual decorative leanings usually dictate what types of pavements and outdoor rooms homeowners want to add to a hardscape plan. Cambridge Pavingstones with Armortec® and Cambridge Wallstones with Laser Fit™ offer a diverse line of products in styles, colors, textures and pattern choices to help address current trends and create new ones. Selections coalesce unmistaken quality and value with versatility, ordering convenience and ease of installation. Design 101: Here are a few facts you’ll need to know as
you begin your creative journey: • Most concrete paver manufacturers offer full spectrums of standard colors. The Cambridge line, for example, has over three-dozen solid and blended shades — plus custom coloring capability. Cambridge sophisticated color technology produces pavers that are more dramatically tinted for true pigmentation. As a result of this value-added ArmorTec® formula, manufactured into every Cambridge Pavingstone, the pavers will remain recognizably smooth and dense with rich in color. You can also opt for cast stone and newly introduced, natural stone pavers, slabs, wall caps and treads. Cambridge travertine and planks pavers have the appeal of high-end flooring. • The characteristic interlock of pavers affords limitless pattern designs. Combine this with all the shape and texture options in the market and you have hundreds of creative possibilities. Ask any Authorized Cambridge Distributor for samples and a no-cost, 100-plus page Outdoor Living Room Guide. You can also search for the closest distributor on cambridgepavers.com. Cambridge can also help you in selecting a professional contractor to help make your wildest dreams come true. • Cambridge Design Kits can turn ideas like adding circles, fans into contemporary and European-inspired laying patterns integrating various sized pavers, from mini- to mega-size, into cost-effective realities. With these tools, installers are given popular adaptations along with other options for contrasting borders, adding definitive bands, mixing pattern arrangements and alternating the direction of shapes and styles for dramatic and uniquely personal results. • Concrete pavers are maintenance-free and set in sand without mortar. In the same fashion as you can with indoor tiles, the visual feel of an interlocking pavement can be further enhanced with contrasting joint colors through the use of a tinted polymeric sand and the overall field of pavers can be modified with a sealer. Although not necessary in the installation process, Cambridge offers polymeric sands in several shades and sealers in finishes from satin to glossy. Be conscious of trends Hardscaping products afford homeowners
innovative and practical ways to expand living spaces and create spectacular curb appeal. However, making the right choices can provide lifestyle benefits now and long-term financial payback down the road when the time comes to sell your home. So, my advice is to think ahead. For example, The American Society of Landscape Architects 2014 trends survey found that 92% of those professionals surveyed indicated that outdoor kitchens and living areas were somewhat or very popular. Other experts like CNN Money suggested that building an outdoor kitchen may get you high return on investment as well — 100%-200% (ROI). Be sure to check into fully-assembled and prepackaged kitchens, grill islands and refreshment bars offered by Cambridge and other hardscape producers online and in social media venues. Accent lighting, fire pits or fireplaces and installed seating, including benches, walls, boulders and rock formations in addition to ledges, also ranked high. Varying elevations (terraced garden beds, raised patios and retaining walls and seat walls) can be accomplished with manufactured wall systems like those from Cambridge that take on natural stone resemblances. The moral of the story is to open the floodgates of creativity with today’s reservoir of hardscape products but also be mindful of “good taste” and flow in splashes of utilitarian benefits that homebuyers in the future will find eye-catching and engaging. Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc. He is one of the founders and a current board member of the Interlocking Pavement Institute. Organized in 1993, ICPI is the North American trade association representing the interlocking concrete paver industry and considered by peer associations around the world as the leader in development and dissemination of technical information for design professionals and contractors. Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.

Wake of the Dutchman The phoTography of Virginia Mallon
The Alfred Van Loen Gallery at the South Huntington Public Library will present the photography of Virginia Mallon, exhibiting her series “Wake of the Dutchman.” Through her lens, Mallon captures deteriorating wooden ships and their nautical environment. Mallon is a photographer, painter and blogger who focuses on human and environmental subjects, with a goal to reflect and comment on current conditions. In Mallon’s series “Wake of the Dutchman,” she shares her deliberate eye, revealing the torn rigs and worn and weathered chips of brilliant paint colors -- the salts and winds uncovering a new under-layer of beauty. Photographing below the water Mallon also shows how both worlds collide -- our world, our backyard, man and his environment -- the vulnerable and strong together. Mallon resides in Northport and is
