Dear Keith, I would like to thank you and the Long Island Hospitality Ball committee for the privilege of being named one of this year’s honorees. To share this recognition alongside Mike Ginty and the memory of John Smythe, Sr., a Long Island icon in the Hospitality and Entertainment business, is another honor. Indeed, I have worked with many former honorees and to be connected to those past and this present group of individuals leaves me a little speechless with gratitude and pleasure. It has also been a privilege to work alongside you over the twenty-some years we have known each other. I remember clearly the first time we met, when you offered not only the professional assistance of your agency, but the gift of friendship as well. As I quickly came to know, your reputation for hard work, integrity, and a calming level-headedness is truly well earned. You put everything you have into everything you touch. You also have a talent for surrounding yourself with friends and colleagues who share your work ethic and enthusiasm. It was therefore great news to hear that you and the committee had joined forces with the American Cancer Society, an organization that does so much good for so many people. It probably is a given for people to take special pride in their own industry and to consider theirs a cut above the rest. Yet, from my own years in the hospitality business, I speak from truth, not bias, in saying that ours is exceptionally gifted with generous and hard-working people. Given the talents and efforts of so many, I cannot say I deserve to be chosen as one of this year’s honorees, but I can and do say how grateful I am for this honor. The annual Long Island Hospitality Ball is a much-anticipated event with good reason. It focuses our industry members’ generosity on behalf of the American Cancer Society, while expanding our awareness of that organization’s work and mission. It shows other Long Island businesses and residents our commitment to a terrible disease that affects our wider community. It also allows us to meet and mingle, to enjoy and celebrate each other and the fantastic work we do as a whole. So I close with a different sense of thanks to you, the entire LIHB committee, all the suppliers and vendors, and the American Cancer Society. Thank you for your part in bringing us together here tonight. Your efforts expand our vision of what we do, why we do it, and who we do it for. Sincerely,
Sales Manager-Spirits Southern Wine and Spirits of New York
Bill DeSilva Bill DeSilva was born and raised on Long Island, New York. In 1980, he headed down south to earn his B.A. at the University of Miami, Florida, majoring in Communications and Film. During his junior and senior years, he received the university’s prestigious Allegro Award, a partial scholarship awarded to the top film/television student of the year. Bill came back to NY in 1990 to begin his film career -- a move that naturally led him not to stage or screen, but to the hospitality and entertainment industry. After two years in Manhattan, and a whole lot of hours working variously as bartender, bar manager, and music venue manager, he was approached to work for The Carriage House Importers and Appleton Rum. Initially hired as an On-Premise manager, he quickly realized he had made his way into an industry ideally suited to his personality, skills, and career goals. From 1996 through 2002, Bill worked On-Premise for the Future Brands Company, and from 2002-05 he was at Eber Bros. Distributor, covering their Spirits On-Premise business. Bill then moved in 2005 to his current position as Sales Manager for the On-Premise Spirits Division at Southern Wine and Spirits. In 2009, The Long Island Restaurant and Bar Association for Breast Cancer Awareness named Bill an Honoree in recognition of his outstanding community service. Bill is married to the beautiful and wonderful Maria and is the father of two terrific young ladies, Claudia and Sophia. When not working, Bill can sometimes be seen and definitely heard rooting for his San Francisco Giants and Dallas Cowboys. Less vocal but equally loved pursuits include golf, biking, and beach time. Fortunately, he can again be vocal rooting for his daughters at their soccer matches and other athletic events. Bill and his beautiful family live more or less quietly in Northport, Long Island.

Dear Keith,
Thank you for the honor of being chosen as one of the honorees for 2014 Long Island Hospitality Ball. I want to assure you of my commitment to the most worthy cause of helping the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer, aiding and assisting patients and their families. I look forward to helping this great foundation. Sincere thanks to all contributing to the 2014 Hospitality Ball. It is their donation of time and treasure which guarantees a most successful event. I would like also to salute my co-honorees, Bill DeSilva of Southern Wine & Spirits and the late John N. Smythe. Both truly represent the best of the Long Island hospitality industry.
Regards, Mike Ginty Sales Manager Boening Brothers, Inc.
Mike Ginty Mike started in the Beer Industry in 1980 as a summer employee while attending the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. During those summers, Mike was exposed to various facets of the whole sale beer distribution business. This education would prove invaluable in the years to come. 2014 marks Mike Ginty’s 30 year Anniversary at Boening Brothers, where he currently serves as a Sales Manager. Ginty believes that Boening Brothers stands in a class of their own because of their unmatched customer service, diverse brand portfolio, family run operation and commitment to Long Island. Mike has been an outstanding ambassador for both Boening Brothers and to his many customers in the Hospitality Industry. He continues to build strong relationships, works closely with customers to support their businesses and various charities. Mike’s true passion, beyond the beer business, of course, is spending time with his wife Dawn and children Mary, Michael Jr. & Sara. Mike is very honored to be selected as an Honoree of the Long Island Hospitality Ball. Special thanks to the Hospitality Committee & the American Cancer Society.
In memory of
John N. Smythe John Smythe’s 65 year career began in the hotel/restaurant management and catering industry in Ireland. He gained European experience at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin and the Savoy Hotel in London. This experience was successfully demonstrated later when he came to the United States, at Delmonico’s in Manhattan, and the famous Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C., where he organized and catered functions for history book personages, including the Kennedys, Johnsons and Nixons. John Smythe’s Long Island legacy began at the Garden City Hotel, a Long Island landmark noted for its elegant service and exquisite catered affairs. As President of John Smythe Food Services, Inc., he built the Colonie Hill Catering complex and opened it in 1972. At the time Colonie Hill was the largest catering complex on the east coast. At Colonie Hill he c raised millions of dollars for charities large and small. Probably the best known fund fundraiser at the Colonie Hill was the 4,000 person fundraiser dinner for our 38th president, Gerald R Ford. Colonie Hill was also famous for its world renowned concert events including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. Smythe took on Las Vegas in 1976 when he opened the 20th Century Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Within the hotel John operated very successful restaurants and a nightclub where he put on Las Vegas style shows. John Smythe returned home to Long Island in 1980 where he bought and operated The Westbury Manor. He continued his elegant catering style for two years until it caught the attention of many Long Island caterers and sold Westbury Manor to the Scotto family. In 1982 Smythe took on a fun project, on a golf course in Sayville, Long Island. He opened a nightclub called Sir John’s. Unfortunately this was short lived because of an opportunity that John just could not pass up. The world renowned Engelbert Humperdinck asked John to become his Personal Manager in 1983. John accepted this opportunity from his good friend and joined him on 5 world tours including producing the show “Engelbert Humperdinck: Live at the Royal Albert Hall” in 1985. In 1992 John Smythe returned home once again and opened up Maxine’s, a Restaurant & Nightclub concept in Melville. This venue captured the attention of the adult audience on Long Island with a certain class and elegance that only John Smythe could provide. Smythe had another vision in the year 1999 and opened up a new concept called Cyberia Nightclub. Located in Farmingdale, Cyberia Friday Nights established itself as the premier house music venue on Long Island.
In 2004 came the creation of one of Long Island’s greatest mega clubs. He built and opened Mirage Nightclub, an Egyptian themed Las Vegas style Nightclub. The Mirage Nightclub raised the bar by which all other Long Island clubs had to follow. Then in 2006 Smythe was presented with an opportunity in New York City and opened Glo Nightclub. Opening a nightclub in New York City was something John always wanted to do. Glo Nightclub created one of the most popular Saturday Night parties in New York City. Two years later, he was presented with another opportunity to sell this successful nightclub and being the shrewd businessman he was, he did. In 2008, Smythe decided to recreate the successful Glo Nightclub concept on Long Island. Glo Nightclub will be forever known for hosting some of the world’s renowned DJ’s and entertainers from all genres of music. John Smythe was a great visionary and someone who always stayed on top of the trends. He will be remembered as one of the great leaders in the hospitality industry with a flair for elegant service and class. He is survived by his wife, 3 children and 5 grandchildren.
Dear Keith, My family and I would like to thank the LIHB Committee for honoring my father at this year’s Long Island Hospitality Ball. It makes our family proud that my father’s peers have such admiration to hold him in such high regard, with the other such luminaries as Bill DeSilva and Mike Ginty. John Smythe was no stranger to Long Island and metropolitan New York charities and fund raising organizations. He was the recipient of numerous awards and presentations from such organizations as Cooley’s Anemia, The Sons of Italy; Suffolk Rehabilitation Centre; City of Hope; The American Cancer Society, The Boy Scouts of America; Suffolk County Easter Seal Society; Dowling College; and the Suffolk County Special Olympics Committee. He would have been honored to be a part of this opportunity to raise money for the American Cancer Society as his mother was a victim of breast cancer and he himself was a prostate cancer survivor. Keith, as a friend to my father and myself, for many years now, we would like to thank you and the entire Hospitality Ball Committee from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness. Thanking You Sincerely,
John Smythe Jr

On behalf of the American Cancer Society We raise our glasses to salute and thank Keith Hart, Event Chairman and Creator of the Long Island Hospitality Ball for his tireless efforts in creating such an incredibly successful event. You’re amazing! Heartfelt appreciation to the invaluable leaders of the L.I.H.B. Executive Committee, 2014 Honorees, MariaElena DiMino & all of the Committee Members for helping to finish the fight against cancer. Thank you to all of the event sponsors, participants and contributors for your tremendous support of the 2014 Long Island Hospitality Ball.
Dear Friends, Welcome to the American Cancer Society 2014 Long Island Hospitality Ball! Tonight promises to be both entertaining and uplifting as we raise money to help the American Cancer Society finish the fight against cancer. Every year, more than 1.6 million Americans hear the words, “You have cancer. It is likely that everyone here this evening has either helped a loved one, friend, or colleague after a cancer diagnosis, or heard these words themselves. Yet the 14 million cancer survivors alive today in the US are a true testament to the progress we are making in the fight to end cancer. Thanks to the generous contributions of supporters like you, the American Cancer Society is proud to have a network of 31 Hope Lodge facilities across the country, including our Jerome L. Greene Family Center here in Manhattan. These places of comfort provide lodging and support services for patients and their caregivers when they are receiving outpatient treatment away from home. Our Lodge is just minutes from Penn Station, and has serviced nearly 10,000 patients and caregivers since opening in 2007. The American Cancer Society is working to save more lives, faster, by preventing cancer, caring for those who have cancer, searching for cures, and working with lawmakers to make this world a healthier place to live. With your help, we believe we can save 1,000 lives a day domestically and, one day, 10,000 lives a day worldwide. On behalf of the Society, I offer my deepest appreciation to members of the planning committee, including event Chair Keith Hart, who worked so hard to make this an exquisite and memorable evening. I would also like to congratulate our 2014 honorees, Bill DeSilva, Mike Ginty and In Memory of John N. Smythe, known to all of us for their generosity and service to our community. Today, two out of three people survive cancer. The American Cancer Society is working to make that three out of three. With your help, we will finish the fight. Thank you for your generosity and continued support, and have a fantastic evening! Sincerely,
Kris Kim

June 2, 2014 Long Island Hospitality Ball Crest Hollow Country Club 8325 Jericho Turnpike Woodbury, NY 11797 Dear Friends :
! ! ! ! !! !!
It is a pleasure to send greetings to everyone gathered for the Fourth Annual Long Island Hospitality Ball to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Organized by restaurateur and thyroid cancer survivor Keith Hart and supported by the Long Island Hospitality Industry, this exciting event demonstrates the best of the human spirit. It highlights the altruistic enthusiasm of people- in this case, some of Long Island's most successful chefs and restaurant owners- to come together in kinship, united to save lives and end the suffering caused by cancer. The fight against this insidious disease is a battle that can and will be won, and everyone present tonight can take great pride in knowing that by joining together for a meaningful cause, you contribute to the progress that continues to be made. By addressing this difficult diagnosis with care, compassion, and knowledge, you offer the hope and promise of survival and good health to patients and their families. I join in congratulating your distinguished honorees: Bill DeSilva, Mike Ginty, and posthumously, John D. Smythe. Their unwavering advocacy and generous support has made it possible for the American Cancer Society to pursue its critical goals and gives us real hope that we are approaching the day when cancer no longer affects our lives and the lives of those we love. With warmest regards, and best wishes for a successful evening.

John N. Smythe 1935-2013 Dear Dad, I didn't know today would be our last Or that I'd have to say goodbye to you so fast I'm so numb, I can't feel anymore Prayin' you'd just walk back through that door And tell me that I was only dreamin' You're not really gone as long as I believe There will be another angel Around the throne tonight Your love lives on inside of me, And I will hold on tight It's not my place to question, Only God knows why I'm just jealous of the angels Around the throne tonight You always made my troubles feel so small And you were always there to catch me when I'd fall In a world where heroes come and go Well God just took the only one I know So I'll hold you as close as I can Longing for the day, when I see your face again But until then God must need another angel Around the throne tonight Your love lives on inside of me And I will hold on tight It's not my place to question Only God knows why I'm just jealous of the angels Around the throne tonight … “Jealous of the Angels”- Jenn Bostic RIP Love always, Dorothy
