Local Musicians by Rich Rivkin

Soundswell is a band of surfers, artists, and free thinkers creating meaningful sound experiences; fusing rock, funk, jazz, and blues, with heavy rhythmic currents and a pulsating beat. Based in Patchogue, these ten musicians explore the spirit of live improvisational music. Each member adds their own color to Soundswell’s canvas, playing an active role in generating a fluidity of sound, a sound that flows from a willingness to embrace each moment, to ride each wave. In little over a year the band has managed to plant themselves firmly in LI’s music scene. They have performed at The Great South Bay Music Festival, The Pennysaver Amphitheater at Bald Hill, Stephen Talkhouse, The Patchogue Theatre, Blue Point Brewery, 89 North Music Venue, Grey Horse Tavern, the Brickhouse Brewery and The Velvet Lounge. Dive on in. Experience the swell. For more information on upcoming

gigs or to listen to their music find them at: www.soundswellband.com The King’s Heartbeat Soca/Rock/Reggae band formed when Reggae/Soca Producer Kooly-Chat (King Heartbeat Entertainment Co. Brooklyn NY) teamed up with Into the

Whip Records recording artist Walker Hornung (Q-South, Machel Montano, The Brotherhood of the Grape) and assembled a cast of musicians that make up The King’s Heartbeat. The music is a mix of styles that make the heart of N.Y. beat. The vocals shared by Walker, B.M.W.A and Luci Emm provide an unlimited canvass on which Producer Kooly Chat can create his magic. The musicians that perform are some of the best in NYC; drummer Brian Senders, Matt McCann on bass, and Roger MASCETTI on Guitar round out the musicians. Together they play a unique mix and smash up classic Soca music with Rock and or Reggae music! A true melting pot of ethnic music just like if you were

walking down the street in Brooklyn or NYC Alter Ego Tom, Chris and Steve formed Alter Ego in early 2008. After playing up and down Nassau and Suffolk Counties, John joined on drums in August, 2010 and helped solidify their sound and attitude. After the sudden loss of one of their founding members and lead guitarist Steve Guidice to cancer in 2013, Al Pennachio and Wayne Heckler joined the band. They are all “old school” rock-n-roll fans and their set list reflects their influences - old and new. The band members are Tom Lee, vocals; Al Pennachio, lead guitar; Chris Hoefenkrieg, bass guitar; Wayne Heckler, keyboard and John Johnson, drums.

Rich Rivkin produces ongoing Art/Music events on Long Island, including Live Art Fusion, ArtMOSPHERE, and the 2013 Summer Arts Festival Series (40 Bands + 100 Artists), featuring the bands and artists listed in this month’s Spotlight. www.limusicfestivals.com

Pace’s Steakhouse in Port Jefferson

18 • LIVE Magazine • july 2014

With two locations in Suffolk County (this one in Port Jeff and the other in nearby Hauppauge), Pace’s Steakhouse pulls double duty as a neighborhood gathering spot and a classic American Steakhouse. We touched down at Pace’s recently to take in their wonderful atmosphere and of course, the food. Even though we were in the restaurant at 5pm on a Thursday, the bar was hopping by the time we left, and half the crowd was mingling with the owner. This seems to be a true neighborhood favorite where everyone is familiar with not only the restaurant, but also each other. Beyond their usual selections of steaks (which come straight from NYC), we dabbled in their crab cake, which was expertly prepared and perfectly cooked and plated. For those who do not eat meat or would want a little variety, this was a worthy addition to their menu. Pace’s Steakhouse 318 Wynn Lane Port Jefferson, NY 11777 631-331-9200

Chef Tito Onofre Jonathan’s Ristorante

Chef Tito Onofre, a native of Peru, discovered an interest in cooking at a young age. He was influenced by his mother, who encouraged his culinary curiosity in her kitchen. Onofre received his degree in Hotel Administration and Culinary Arts from El Centro de Formacion en Turismo in Lima, Peru. Hungry for more, he continued his culinary education at Florida Culinary Institute in Palm Beach, Florida and was inspired by popular chefs such as Mario Batalli, Alfred Portale and Jamie Oliver. The Peruvian chef took up a position with a popular Italian restaurant–Boom–which had two locations in Manhattan and Bridgehampton, NY. Onofre was working at both locations and spent much time commuting from the city to Eastern Long Island. In 1997, Onofre’s daughter Ashley was born and he wanted to spend more time at home with his family. He accepted a position as executive chef at Jonathan’s Ristorante in Huntington, NY and hasn’t looked back since. At Jonathan’s, Onofre is charged with designing menus that encompass European flavor and refined Italian cuisine. “I like recreating old recipes and sometimes forgotten dishes that are reminiscent of ‘Nonna’s cooking,’ Onofre said. “We also believe in having a

courteous and knowledgeable staff to enhance the experience.” Maiale con Vegetal Tartufati is one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. A double cut pork chop with cipollini onions, Tuscan potatoes, artichokes and truffle oil. “The dish has Northern Italian roots,” chef said. “It’s simple food with a somewhat complex preparation, making it desirable to those who feel they couldn’t emulate the plate at home.” What’s a perfectly prepared pork chop without a glass of red to complement it. The chef recommends a “super Tuscan” wine with this particular dish, for example a Gagliole which is 90% Italian Sangiovese grape with Cabernet Sauvignon. “It’s a dark and hearty Tuscan red with thick layers of black fruit and spice,” he explained.

Milagro

Would you like to take a ride in a Time Machine with Santana from the magic at Yasgur's Farm up to the present day? Well now is your chance to Feel the Music and Soul of Santana through the awesome Talented artists of Milagro! Milagro formed in 2005 with the vision of band leader Julio Claudio to bring you the complex rhythms and melodies of that Latin percussion sound. Milagro does not put on a show, they give you a Full Blown Concert. One of the many things that puts Milagro at a plateau by themselves is that they cover all four decades of Santana with the energy and the Groove that cannot be matched by others because of the skills developed by each member of the band. The band is made up of professional accomplished musicians led by Lead Guitarist and Vocalist Julio Claudio, on drums Drew Pantuliano, Bass Guitar Matt Bermudez, Congas/Bongos Juan Rodriguez, Timbales/Percussion Peter Robles, and Keyboards, Anthony Richards. I had the pleasure of attending the 1969 Woodstock Festival and will never forget the electricity and conduit that Santana sent into the Souls of everyone there. This is exactly what you will inhale from Milagro. I have not only had the privi-

lege of seeing Milagro live on a few occasions, but also had the honor of having them on my Internet TV show, The Maverick Soul Hour w/ Tommy Maher on Madhouse TV where we did interviews with each of the members but also had them play Live on two different shows. I have gotten to know all of the members personally and I can tell you these guys are Truly Great Human Beings and Amazing Artists. Another wonderful musical moment will happen in August when Milagro joins me at the 45th Woodstock Reunion at Yasgur's Farm in Bethel, NY where they will showcase themselves at the place where it all began for Santana. I have performed at the Farm at a few Reunions and cannot wait to see the response that will echo through the Forest and into the Hearts and Souls of the beautiful people who come to this Amazing Spiritual place for nothing but Fun, Love, and Music. So keep your eyes open and make sure you treat yourself to making it to a show that will Blow You Away, by a band called Milagro. Much Peace and Love to You All, Tommy Maher Tommy Maher is the owner of Mad House TV and host of THE MAVERICK SOUL HOUR w/ Tommy Maher

Kerry Kearney To anyone who has had the pleasure of being lured by his unique sound, weather locally or a abroad, known by many having performed with some of the greatest Artists he being one of them. He has always been of a equal if not outstanding amazement by his stage presence with well-known national acts. Kerry Kearney is undeniably a musician of great talent. As an icon for his unique sound ,introducing audiences to other great talents, he is also very modest and humble. I have been a fan of his for a very long time. The very first time I ever seen him perform was at the Great South Bay Music Festival, which is produced annually by Jim Faith. Kerry is always on the bill with the national headliner and the festival grows bigger and better every year. I remember arriving and everyone was in a mad dash to get to the main stage with their lawn chairs, blankets, hula hoops and coolers. The music was surely something I had never heard before. So, I knew this guitar man was really something special. It wasn’t long before I saw what he can do. He is like an aphrodisiac of happiness, spread with contagious smiles and love. Everyone seemed to be feeling the great outdoors with the wind blowing, the sun shining and the music of Kerry's unique sound enhancing the atmosphere. The most fascinating thing is the way he

plays his slide guitar. What he does seems so simple. He makes it look so easy. But from the faces of the many talented guitarists in the audience, shaking their heads in admiration, you just knew what he was doing had everyone in extreme amazement. There aren't too many musical artists that have that kind of effect. I have since tried to make it to every show he performs. I have always been pleasantly surprised every time I see him play, along with his band members who by far are equally of such great talent and bring a very fun loving enjoyment to every show Mario Staiano, David Bennett, Gerry,Sorrentino, Ken Korb. even in the same week that he manages to always make it different and equally as entertaining as the time before. What I admire the most is the level of talent he draws into every one of his shows. You never know what to expect. The one thing you should expect, if you want to get in, is to arrive early enough or you may be turned away because he truly packs the house. Aside from his musical talent, he has also written a book that is filled with short stories of his life and travels - “The Psychedelta Monologues.” He has also organized many fundraisers for friends in need and those who have experienced hardships. He's always right there to help. I can only say if you

sk yourself: “What do many iconic TV sitcoms, popular over the last few decades, have in common?” Look back to the seventies at The Brady Bunch, still one of television’s all-time favorites; to the eighties for The Cosby Show; and then to the nineties at Everybody Loves Raymond, to mention just a few. In most of the episodes, the cast — immediate family members, relatives and friends — were regularly seen gathered in the kitchen where all-to-familiar events occurred. As we look back at our own family lives, how often have we heard this familiar comment: “Why is everyone congregating in the kitchen?” So if TV-land really does mimic real life, get ready for a brand new set — the open-

air patio room, complete with lavish cooking, entertaining and leisure-time conveniences. As modern-day lifestyles are changing, we see entire households moving much of their activities out-of-doors while at the same time, redefining the backyard patio, as we once knew it. “Move over interior designers,” says Charles H. Gamarekian, Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc., manufacturers of a full spectrum of outdoor living products. “In today’s world, watch the landscape designer become producer and director, get a starring role, and earn rave reviews.” Leading interlocking concrete pavingstone and wallstone manufacturers such as Cambridge are dedicating entire segments of their product lines to satisfy the wish lists of homeowners who have migrated out the back door. Products run the gamut and include fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and complete kitchens, grill and bar islands, and even outdoor pizza ovens that cook pizza pies and other foods with an old world, brick oven flavor derived from authentic wood-fired ovens. No backyard gathering spot is truly up-to-date without an openair pergola or pavilion for outdoor dining, relaxing and entertaining. A pergola is typically a patio or garden structure with an open roof such as a trellis. In contrast, a patio pavilion has open sides and a closed roof. For added convenience and value, look for the aforementioned products in pre-packaged kits like those from Cambridge. So if you think Room With A View may be an appropriate name for a modern, family-oriented television show, ask a professional landscape contractor and find that it is easier than you think to create your own family “reality” series right in your own backyard.

Bob Dylan – Another Side of Bob Dylan Billboard #43 I know it seems crazy to include a classic Bob Dylan album on any list of the best ‘alternative’ albums, but technically, this record fits the criteria, because the record never reached the Billboard top 40. “Another Side of Bob Dylan” just missed the top 40, stalling out at #10, so here it is. Still, though, it does beg the question, “How could a classic Bob Dylan album not have made the top 40?” As it turns out, the answer is fairly straightforward. Throughout 1963, Bob Dylan had an extraordinarily comfortable relationship with the kingpins of the folk music movement. He graciously provided them with exactly what they were looking for, and they complied by lauding him as the voice of their generation. In 1963, folk music and leftist politics were two sides of the same coin. Pete Seeger’s adaptation of “We Shall Overcome” provided a blueprint that folk artists were expected to follow, at least in a political sense. Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’” were perfect templates for that genre - poetic sing-alongs that allowed the self-righteous and indignant to feel empowered and unified. Virtually every track from “Times They Are a-Changin’” reflect a strident, judgmental perspective where the rich and powerful are called to task for ignoring the needs of the poor and underprivileged. Dylan’s follow-up, though, totally abandoned the blueprint. The record company knew it, too, which is why they titled the record “Another Side of Bob Dylan.” Here, Dylan was no longer pointing fingers at a perceived enemy nor trying to adapt to the folk-liberal sensibilities of his cohorts. There’s no “Masters of War” here. Instead, the album deals with personal politics, matters of the soul that Dylan was experiencing in his own life. By closing the album with “It Ain’t Me, Babe,” Dylan implicitly gave his fan-base whatfor, basically telling them to find another lackey. For the first time, Dylan challenged the status quo of the folk world by shaking off their imposed expectations, and they in turn reacted harshly to

the change. In a manner that suggested treason, Sing Out Magazine panned “Another Side of Bob Dylan” outright, implying that Dylan’s songs were now selfish and useless to ‘the cause’. Folk critic David Horowitz referred to the album as “ an unqualified failure of taste and self-critical awareness.” Is it not bizarre that the very people who previously championed Dylan had, due to their own preoccupations, suddenly grown completely deaf to his poetics? Nonetheless, it is quite likely that such a reaction from his home team had a negative effect on album sales. As history reflects, this may have been the first time that Dylan angered the folk stalwarts, but it would not be the last – plugging in at Newport Folk Festival was the capper, but that controversy was simply the logical extension of Dylan expressing his independence, much like he originally did on “Another Side of Bob Dylan.”

Tom Ryan has written several books, including “American Hit Radio” and ”The Jimmy Buffett Trivia Book.” He hosts a pair of Radio Shows (“American Hit Radio” (again) and “How Music Changed”), and is a founder and principal of the New York Roots Music Association (aka NYRMA). He also plays drums with the Last Hombres and runs a Long Island manufacturing firm.
