LIVE MUSIC This month’s column features one very special group and one very special musician. Klyph Black & John Sparrow are a Long Island based acoustic duo that have been performing together for more than 25 years to receptive crowds. They have opened shows for The Subdudes, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, Mick Taylor, Taj Mahal, Hot Tuna and others. They were recently joined on stage at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett by Charles Neville as well as Grammy winner Terrance Simien. Yes, this is the Klyph Black that has also toured and recorded with the Zen Tricksters playing bass guitar. Klyph and John’s first CD was “Friend and Partner” which garnered critical acclaim. Black & Sparrow’s new CD “Second Time Around” was just released, and features ten, tight tracks of original country/blues/rockabilly music, taking on a whole new dimension with the addition of a full band behind their two acoustic guitars. (Klyph also plays dobro & slide guitar, John also plays blues harp). Hear Black and Sparrow every Wednesday night at Jewel, located in Rubies Corporate Plaza in Melville, from 6-9:30 p.m. Also upcoming are gigs at the Stephen Talkhouse on

May 3rd and June 21st, as well as in Wilkes Barre, PA and in Teaneck, NJ. Frank Bellucci, a 37 year veteran of the music industry, lays claim to being the hardest working drummer on Long Island. It’s not uncommon to find him playing two or three gigs in one 24 hour period, as he performs with many different groups which keeps him busy night and day. His repetoire is grand, and while my personal favorite are his jazz sticks, he can rock and roll with the best of them. His groups include Uppercut, F.B. and the Swinging Machine, Been There Done That, Willie Steel Band, Jazzaphonic, Gracenote Trio, Bob Lepley Trio and Steve Adelson and the Ucci Brothers, to name a few. I wish you a full month of live musical pleasure right here on Long Island! Valerie is a Realtor® by day and a live music freak at night. She fancies herself an aficionado of quality live music of all genres, specializing in the Long Island club and bar scene. Got a gig you want her to attend? E-mail her at vvancleef@gmail.com. Cover bands and original music…it’s all good!

ediacrime calls itself “Heavy Americana.” That is, their sound comprises elements of all the music that has come past them (provided they liked it, of course). The band is fronted by guitarist/vocalist, and songwriter Eddie Havoc, Drums and vocals are held down by Vicki Liotta, who can pound ‘em like Keith Moon or jam in a fluid, jazzy groove. C. Chris Peters play keys, theremin and various electronic instruments, shaping their distinctive massive sound. Neil McGowan’s vocals and bass round it all out. Shifting across the spectrum from Folk-Rock, to Island-Influenced, to Heavy Rock, to Country- Influenced, their sets are never the same. Guitar/theremin/percussion duels punctuated by Havoc’s manic stage craft make their live per-

s and Flyod - The Long Island based band Us And Floyd have been paying tribute to the iconic music of Pink Floyd in New York area music venues for the past two years. The nine piece group takes pride in performing accurate recreations of Pink Floyd’s best known songs, as well as some of the deeper album cuts treasured by avid Pink Floyd followers. Their shows have been wowing the legions of local area Floyd fans with a multimedia experience that includes a Pink Floyd style light and video show. Look for Us And Floyd appearing monthly at top Long Island venues such as Revolution Music Hall on May 17th, Plattduetsche Biergarten on July 19th, KJ Farrell’s on Aug. 9th and The Emporium on Aug. 22nd. ind Open - Forget everything you thought you knew about Jam Bands. One of the freshest, exciting, and unique sounding bands on the scene today is the very talented Mind Open. Instrumental and jazz based, with a touch of rock, Brazilian, and psychedelic grooves, the Mind Open experience is one you have to see to believe. The bulk of the material the band plays is contributed by Vibist Chris Covais, and Guitarist Andrew Ahr. The rest? Rare grooves from obscure groovy jazz-funk, rock, and psych records. Make sure you see Mind Open spread peace, love, and good vibrations through the medium of music, at one of their many shows in New York City, and Long Island. You can see their performance schedule at www.mindopenband.com. H2O Seafood Grill in Smithtown

H2O Seafood Grill in Smithtown is just one of many restaurants on Long Island owned and operated by the Bohlsen Restaurant Group, one of the premier groups in the area. Focusing on fresh seafood dishes in a wonderful atmosphere, H2O is doing for the north shore what Tellers and Monsoon are doing on the south shore. If you’re not familiar with the Bohlsen Restaurant Group, they’re operating some of the most unique spaces on the island. High-end dining at its finest, H2O is just one of many popular destinations in Suffolk County that they have their hands on. At H2O, diners are experiencing dishes that have seemingly just arrived from the sea. We’ve dined on both the shrimp and grits and a lobster sushi roll that was wrapped in shredded and fried potatoes – all pictured above. The quality of the ingredients is evident at each step of the way. On the interior there are three different ar-

eas to enjoy the cuisine. To the left of the entry is the bar area, where diners can bide their time while waiting for a table. Off the bar area is a smaller dining room, comfortably fashioned for a more intimate experience of dining. The main dining room is the most casual and open area of the restaurant. Booths line the walls while there are tables in the middle. It’s in the entryway to this dining room that the sushi bar is located to satisfy your sushi and sashimi needs. Outside a lounge area awaits to enjoy food and drinks. As far as dining on Long Island, one can never go wrong when dining at one of these fabulous locations. Each time that we have visited we have left full and satisfied. H2O Seafood Grill 215 W Main Street Smithtown, NY 11787 631-361-6464

Robert Bruey By Bonnie Spady

Photos by Laura Akscin Foord Sometimes you get to be a part of something that you know is special. Last fall was one of those times and it continue even today as I write this. Robert Bruey, a local singer songwriter, approached me and asked me to help him in any way that I could in promoting his upcoming music project. This one was going to be different from the other two that he had created, going into the world of Grammy winning producer’s and world class session players. For him, this was a step above all he has taken in the light of a new era in his life... music. Robert had only started writing music a few short years ago and knew that he had to take a chance and put it all out on the line. He had come to those he trusted and asked for support in getting the word out about his crowd funding campaign to help defray the costs of producing this labor of love. Some of us have seen his work with the countless things he does to give back to those less fortu-

nate without ever wanting anything in return. I felt compelled to help get this music out there and so I was happy to accept his request for help. It’s hard for any musician to hold a job outside of their music career while trying to find a way to get to the point of only being a professional singer songwriter. Robert has made it his mission because he truly believes it is what it is he needs to be doing. He seeks ways in which it will work for him. With all the support he was receiving he thought to ask a few who had faith in him to help him sell tickets that may help out with the costs of what he wanted to create. I was the first to ask that he please let me know what it is I could do. Although he is very well known on the north Fork, I wanted to introduce him and his music to those that had never heard him before in my area. All it took was for them to hear one of his songs on my website, “Kelly Green,” and they were in. Tickets sold especially well and

Robert promised a percentage of what was being raised to go to one of his charities. The next phase of fundraising was Kickstarter, a web-based crowd funding website which has helped a lot of artists, musicians and writers reach their goals. I really was impressed by how many of the family, friends and new listeners who were supportive of him wanted to see this materialize. At the same time I also wanted to help promote a new establishment, Vines & Hops in Riverhead which I was introduced to by a friend. I made time to go and see the place, and I was so impressed. The decor was very well thought out and you could tell it was an upscale venue and very welcoming. The owners are some of the friendliest hosts you ever want to meet. I wanted to let them see what great talent was out here on a local level so I met them to introduce myself as the place to go to look to see who was available for hire. After meeting them, what better way to support them then to suggest to my friend Gail that they host a fundraiser for Robert. I felt this could give them the opportunity to see the number of patrons that come to a place for exceptional musicians. Many of the other venues who knew of Robert Bruey gave very generous gifts and had kind words. For those that did not know him, after listening to his music on my website they also were willing to not only contribute but consider future dates for him to come and perform. It was an amazing thing to be a part of. A community coming together to support a local artist. The project, needless to say, got off the ground in December. With many months of work, Robert, along with his wife Dana on backing vocals, Cellist Jonathan Preddice, the one and only Jack Licitra, Malcome Gold, Ben Wisch, Jean Paul Vest, Chris Marshak, who charted his music in the process and made Robert feel it was something of a real milestone. As he expressed to all of us in his journal how it made him feel. All the positive energy gave him a wonderful outlook towards the whole project. What an amazing process and how interesting it was to watch and

hear about the process of recording. Step by step, even up to choosing the cover artwork, we watched the journey unfold while Robert made choices, revealed to us on the fly. Finally the date arrived. Carousel, as it was to be called, was introduced to the world at The Vail-Leavitt Music Hall Friday April 25th to a sold out audience filled with so much love and so many supporter who helped him get there. This is how it should be done, a community effort! It was a magical night of one man’s efforts to make his dreams a reality with the support of great friends and family. It was truly a blessing to be a part of so much of faith and love for Robert Brueys music. I somehow believe it will not be long before he reaches the top of the charts and I look forward to hearing it on our local radio stations and seeing him on the biggest of stages no matter where it is he does go. I am confident it will be in front of people who simply enjoy his Music immensely because he truly is a artist so uniquely gifted with not only words but with feeling that somehow touch your heart and soul in the melody of his guitar strings. I am proud to have been a prt of the whole process... .Bravo Mr. Robert Bruey Bravo!!!!! Want to know more or get your own CD? www.robertbruey.com.

sk yourself: “What do many iconic TV sitcoms, popular over the last few decades, have in common?” Look back to the seventies at The Brady Bunch, still one of television’s all-time favorites; to the eighties for The Cosby Show; and then to the nineties at Everybody Loves Raymond, to mention just a few. In most of the episodes, the cast — immediate family members, relatives and friends — were regularly seen gathered in the kitchen where all-to-familiar events occurred. As we look back at our own family lives, how often have we heard this familiar comment: “Why is everyone congregating in the kitchen?” So if TV-land really does mimic real life, get ready for a brand new set — the open-

air patio room, complete with lavish cooking, entertaining and leisure-time conveniences. As modern-day lifestyles are changing, we see entire households moving much of their activities out-of-doors while at the same time, redefining the backyard patio, as we once knew it. “Move over interior designers,” says Charles H. Gamarekian, Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc., manufacturers of a full spectrum of outdoor living products. “In today’s world, watch the landscape designer become producer and director, get a starring role, and earn rave reviews.” Leading interlocking concrete pavingstone and wallstone manufacturers such as Cambridge are dedicating entire segments of their product lines to satisfy the wish lists of homeowners who have migrated out the back door. Products run the gamut and include fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and complete kitchens, grill and bar islands, and even outdoor pizza ovens that cook pizza pies and other foods with an old world, brick oven flavor derived from authentic wood-fired ovens. No backyard gathering spot is truly up-to-date without an openair pergola or pavilion for outdoor dining, relaxing and entertaining. A pergola is typically a patio or garden structure with an open roof such as a trellis. In contrast, a patio pavilion has open sides and a closed roof. For added convenience and value, look for the aforementioned products in pre-packaged kits like those from Cambridge. So if you think Room With A View may be an appropriate name for a modern, family-oriented television show, ask a professional landscape contractor and find that it is easier than you think to create your own family “reality” series right in your own backyard.

Jerry Lee Lewis – Live at the Star Club Billboard – did not chart

In 1964, Jerry Lee Lewis was about as ‘off the grid’ as you could get. He was the living definition of a has-been, as his career was completely derailed in 1958. Once the scandal of his marriage to his 13 year-old cousin hit the streets, his future as a rock and roll superstar was eviscerated, and Lewis became a pariah that couldn’t be touched. Overnight, he was kicked to the curb. In the time that he retreated to lick his wounds, the music industry changed drastically. The Beatles made the 50s rockers sound obsolete, which further rendered Lewis into the dustbin of music history. The world expected Lewis to fade away, but he did not plan on cooperating with that expectation. Instead, he grew even more hardheaded, even more committed to his manifest destiny of being the greatest living performer the world has ever seen. Most venues wouldn’t even let him play, but when he could get a gig, he played as if his life depended on it. And in a sense, it did. In Germany, a cult following still supported him, so a small label decided to take a chance and record a live performance at the Star Club (yes, the same one where the Beatles played before they altered history) in Germany. Listen to this. The music is downright feral.

Jerry Lee was a scary guy, and this record captures his stubbornness, his absolute sense of self-confidence and a fearlessness that practically challenges his audience. It’s like he’s saying, “I dare you to ignore THIS!” He pounds so hard that I half expect the piano to go up in flames. The band rocks like crazy (that’s the Nashville Teens holding on for dear life), but they still struggle to keep up with him as he races through each song like a demented madman. Rolling Stone later reviewed the record, saying, “'Live At The Star Club, Hamburg' is not an album, it's a crime scene: Jerry Lee Lewis slaughters his rivals in a thirteen-song set that feels like one long convulsion”. You probably heard most of these tunes before, but you never heard them played better than here on this record. It just might be the most intense live album ever recorded…by anybody. Tom Ryan has written several books, including “American Hit Radio” and ”The Jimmy Buffett Trivia Book.” He hosts a pair of Radio Shows (“American Hit Radio” (again) and “How Music Changed”), and is a founder and principal of the New York Roots Music Association (aka NYRMA). He also plays drums with the Last Hombres and runs a Long Island manufacturing firm.
