go west, young man! Happy Spring! Technically, it’s still a few weeks away, but the warmer weather is just around the corner and everyone here at the magazine is looking forward to heading full force into the next season. And speaking of going full force...you know we never slow down at Village Connection. We have made some noticeable improvements with this issue, and some that are not as noticeable. This issue marks a change in the physical appearance of the magazine as well as in our distribution. We’ve added a 100 lb. perfect bound wrap, which you no doubt have already seen. At the same time we are growing our distribution to include the villages that surround Huntington to the west, Syosset, Woodbury, East Norwich and Oyster Bay; a major addition to complete our coverage of the 5 miles surrounding Huntington Village. As our readership continues to grow, so does our reach with social media, with thousands of additional readers reading our digital edition through links on facebook and twitter each month. Watch for the official launch of these new areas in our April issue as we continue our goal to be the only lifestyle and entertainment magazine for Long Island’s North Shore Villages. In the meantime, I’ll see you in the Village...

The Townwide Fund of Huntington was founded by a group of private citizens who wanted to help local charities raise funds. The organization’s essential mission is to keep money raised in Huntington within the community. Now 50 years and more than $10 million later, we continue to infuse local organizations with the support they need to provide health and human services to the people of Huntington. As a non-governmental agency, The Townwide Fund of Huntington bridges the gap between dwindling governmental support for local charities and the increasing needs of residents in Asharoken, Centerport, Cold Spring Harbor, Commack, Dix Hills, East Northport, Eaton’s Neck, Elwood, Fort Salonga, Greenlawn, Halesite, Huntington, Huntington Bay, Huntington Station, Lloyd Harbor, Melville, Northport, South Huntington and West Hills.

I Love Spring!
beauty - adriana vater
This season, groovy styles, watercolor designs and vibrant colors are ushering in a fresh new perspective. Think big hair, fun prints, flowy fabrics and an international flair! Fashion is feminine, a perfect complement to beauty that focuses on thick locks that are layered, touchable and filled with movement. Layers of sheer and natural, touchable textures in earthy tones were key in Vera Wang’s runway collection. Feminine lapels, lines and shapely skirts flowed. Jewel tones mesmerize - in pops of color on billowy frocks, and in beauty. Midnight blues add intrigue to otherwise neutral outfits. Outline eyes in these thick jewel tones and have fun with it! Use metallics (a nod to the ‘60s) in a crayontype liner to capture attention and add excitement to any look. Floral and animal prints deliver a retro-sexy look flirty, with attitude. Swingy, shorter hemlines are key this season. Watercolor prints wash sheer fabric gowns in bright colors, mixed with golds and neutrals. Side-swiped hair compliments any face shape. Bangs are longer and pushed to the side looking playful and effortless. Hair is full - if you’ve got curls, let them loose! Add layers for movement. Shorter crops are relaxed and edgy, think grown-out pixie cut with lots of layered texture and bangs that just swipe the eyes. Add volume to thinning hair with new invati™ from Aveda, a complete system that’s proven to reduce hair loss significantly and can be continued in the privacy of your own home. Volumizing shampoos and styling foams can also boost the thickness of finer hair.

WORLD STYLE
Custo Barcelona
The fashion runways of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week glittered with a new World Style for fall 2012. Tribal beading and woven fabrics of indigenous patterns paired with modern, high-tech metallics in bronze, silver and gold. The digital age grants designers limitless choices for prints and fabrics, from patterns as subtle as smoke to bold checkerboard compositions. Carolina Herrera
Decades past had a definable look or style, think of the flappers of the 1920s and 30s, the movie star elegance of the 40s and 50s, the mod 60s, disco 70s and big hair 80s with its rock-and-roll glam. Today’s styles are part of the global awareness that is the age of the Web, with the immediacy of instant communication and social media. This is the decade of World Style. Calos Melle
Neutrals pair with graphic black, gray and white; drama ensues with bold accents of bright colors for a high contrast texture and pop. Cultural influences from around the globe clash and collaborate to make up trends this season. Story by Adriana & John Vater

I was in Utah recently visiting friends and we went hiking and mountain biking in the most amazing places. When my friend suggested we go to Slick Rock in Moab, Utah to bike because “it was the best place in the country for mountain biking” I said sure!! Then I went to you tube to see what it was like. Then............I freaked!! I said “No way! I’m going to kill myself up there!” I only had experience biking on Long Island where it is relatively flat and my psyche got the best of me and I became very anxious. While getting a lot of grief from my husband and my friends, I took a deep breath and thought to myself “What would I tell my fitness clients right now?” I proceeded to answer myself and here is what I said, “ Kathy, you have to be a mental monster. A mental monster is someone who can use their mind to overcome their fears, overcome the obstacles that we create in our head, overcome anxiety telling us to run the other way and realize that our own mind stops us from doing things that we are completely capable of doing.” Everything I teach and coach people about health and
fitness I also do myself. So I grabbed my helmet and got on the bike and road up and down mountains and rock formations and crazy terrain. It was one of the most amazing places I’ve ever seen, and I would have missed it all if I listened to my fears. The reason that I am telling you this is that we all doubt our abilities at times, but we need to push the fear out of our heads and stop over-thinking a situation and just do it. Just achieve what we set out to accomplish. This goes for every aspect of our lives, whether it is a physical challenge or a career challenge or a personal challenge. We are all capable of so much more than our mind allows us to believe. We all have a mental monster living inside of us so unleash him. Let him come out and play and you will be healthier or fitter or more financially secure or enjoying a beautiful place or doing whatever it is you really want to be doing to live life to the fullest.

Reach More of Today’s Buyers Through the Use of SOCIAL MEDIA By Marilyn Urso Videos, Fans, Tweets, Check-ins, and now Pin Boards and Apps … what’s it all about and how will it help you sell your home? Today’s generation of homebuyers is totally connected! They grew up with video games, email, and computer lab from kindergarten. It’s not surprising that they have evolved into totally internet based consumers. No matter what product or service they want to find, they begin their search online, or they have an ‘app’ for it on their iphone. So how do the many social media sites come into play when one of these ‘tech-savvy’ buyers is looking for a home? Here’s a simple breakdown: VIDEOS: YouTube.com Consumers go to YouTube to find out about everything. It’s the second most used search engine on the Internet. If you’re thinking about buying a home you can get information on mortgages, home inspections, how to choose a REALTOR, as well as community tours and of course home tours. A buyer can be totally armed with all the info he needs before he even looks at one property! FANS: Facebook.com Facebook Business Pages provide the consumer with more information on real estate. From posts about local sales to community events or Open Houses, it’s all there and very easy to find! TWEETS: Twitter.com Consumers can follow their favorite REALTOR, or mortgage company, or any other real estate related person to get updated information on the market and tips on buying a home. Open Houses, Current Sales Data, and Community Info is tweeted daily by the local real estate experts. All the consumer has to do is follow – anonymously – to stay informed!

CHECK-INS: FourSquare.com This web-based phone app allows you to check-in wherever you are and score points, perhaps becoming the “Mayor”. Buyers relocating to a new town might check this site for info
on good restaurants, local events & happenings or to see how active the REALTOR they are using is in the community! PIN BOARDS: Pinterest.com This is one of the latest social websites to go viral in the last few months. Members “PIN” different items on their “BOARDS” – for example perhaps a board for favorite cookie recipes or info on bathroom makeovers. Many REALTORS have boards that include a variety of decorating and makeover ideas as well as information on the buying process and of course Open House boards and Listing Boards. APPS: There are many, many phone apps for real estate and
home related services. Our latest innovation in this area is easy to install and completely free! It will provide you with instant access to homes for sale or rent wherever you are! Simply Text: LIVR to 87778 and follow the download instructions. Whether you are buying and want to know what’s for sale in an area or you just want to find out what price your neighbors are selling for, it’s a simple click of button!. It’s a different way to look at purchasing a home, but it is the way our new consumers are working. For more information on how the Internet can help you buy or sell contact me at MUrso@LIVillageRealty.com or by phone or text 516-359-0690

Got Jobs? “Oh wow, oh wow. Oh Wow.” The last words spoken by a man who changed technology and the lives of most Americans forever. When Steve Jobs lost his battle with cancer at the age of 56, he took with him the possibility of changing our lives, even more then he has already! Can you think of any single person in our history who is directly or indirectly responsible for the creation of so many jobs? Forget the direct and the obvious facts that 50 thousand plus jobs are the direct result at Apple, but what about all the people employed by the creation of the tens of thousands of apps available on the Iphone / Ipad? What about all the people who make accessories that fit the ipad? And if it weren’t for Steve Jobs, consider Android might not exist! Every time a new technology is created, many more knockoffs become available – should we talk about the Apple Laptop? The Apple desktop? The many operating systems? Steve Jobs “Think Differently” concepts made people actually think differently! In my opinion, I see Steve Jobs greatest success as his ability to integrate technology with the human experience. His vision of integrating; the way we listen to music, read books, express our inner artistic desires, has made the unreachable technology easy to use by all! Who would have thought you could have so much power with “one button”? Simply understanding what the average consumer wants is an incredible feat in itself! Connecting, sharing and capturing life is what Steve Jobs did best. Simple Apps like Facetime allows the many to stay connected with each other. What about iTunes? The creation of an easy to use place to get more apps is “genius” in itself! So, go ahead America, be inspired! Whether you are an end user of Steve Jobs creations, an entrepreneur of new technology or simply love music, remember Steve Jobs had his hand in your life somehow and will continue to be one of our greatest innovators! Got Jobs?
BETCHA DIDN’T KNOW Steve Jobs collected Coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits! (in order to buy food) Steve Jobs was known to walk 7 miles in order to get one meal at a local Hare Krishna Temple! According to USA Today Steve Jobs, drove his 07’ Mercedes-Benz (SL-55, A very high end car) without a license place – using s bar code instead! Steve Jobs was offered an internship with Hewlett Packard in the 8th Grade! (it is said that he called the co-founder of HP, William Packard to get some missing parts, spoke to Mr. Packard for 20 minutes, and was offered Steve Jobs a bag of parts and a summer internship! (a well known NY times report)
STEVE JOBS QUOTES “I want to put a ding in the universe” “You can’t just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they’ll want something new.” – Inc. Magazine “Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles.” – Business week “The products suck! There’s no sex in them anymore!” – Business week “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.”

Most people have good intentions about saving for retirement. But few know when they should start and how much they should save. Sometimes it might seem that the expenses of today make it too difficult to start saving for tomorrow. It’s easy to think that you will begin to save for retirement when you reach a more comfortable income level, but the longer you put if off; the harder it will be to accumulate the amount you need. The rewards of starting to save early for retirement far outweigh the cost of waiting. By contributing even small amounts each month, you may be able to amass a great deal over the long term. One helpful method is to allocate a specific dollar amount or percentage of your salary every month and to pay yourself as though saving for retirement were a required expense. Here’s a hypothetical example of the cost of waiting. Two friends, Chris and Leslie, want to start saving for retirement. Chris starts saving $275 a month right away and continues to do so for 10 years, after which he stops but lets his funds continue to accumulate. Leslie waits 10 years before starting to save, then starts saving the same amount on a monthly basis. Both their accounts earn a consistent 8% rate of return. After 20 years, each would have contributed a total of $33,000 for retirement. However, Leslie, the procrastinator, would have accumulated a total of $50,646, less than half of what Chris, the early starter, would have accumulated ($112,415).* This example makes a strong case for an early start so that you can take advantage of the power of compounding.
Your contributions have the potential to earn interest, and so does your reinvested interest. This is a good example of letting your money work for you. If you have trouble saving money on a regular basis, you might try savings strategies that take money directly from your paycheck on a pre-tax or after-tax basis, such as employer-sponsored retirement plans and other direct-payroll deductions. Regardless of the method you choose, it’s extremely important to start saving now, rather than later. Even small amounts can help you greatly in the future. You could also try to increase your contribution level by 1% or more each year as your salary grows. Distributions from tax-deferred retirement plans, such as 401(k) plans and traditional IRAs, are taxed as ordinary income and may be subject to an additional 10% federal income tax penalty if withdrawn prior to age 59½. *This hypothetical example of mathematical compounding is used for illustrative purposes only and does not represent the performance of any specific investment. Rates of return will vary over time, particularly for long-term investments. Investments offering the potential for higher rates of return involve a higher degree of investment risk. Taxes, inflation, and fees were not considered. Actual results will vary.

ddressing your diet should be at the top of your list, and rather than adding certain foods, you’ll want to eliminate the most dangerous culprits first. Naturally, processed foods and soft drinks do not belong in a cancer-preventive diet. I believe red meat from animals reared in confined animal feeding operations (CAFO’s) is also a MAJOR contributor to cancer. These animals are given antibiotics, growth hormones and other veterinary drugs that get stored in their tissues. Additionally, cooking the meat over high heat creates heterocyclic amines, which further add to its carcinogenic effect. While I do recommend eating meat, I agree that there is absolutely NO benefit to eating CAFO beef. The ONLY type of meat I recommend is organically-raised, grassfed meats. It’s hard for a lot of people to grasp the difference between CAFO and organic meat, but truly, they are like two different species in terms of their nutritional content. One is health harming while the other is beneficial. So when we’re talking about the detrimental impact of red meat on your health, especially in terms of feeding cancer, please understand that I’m talking specifically about CAFO beef, aka “factory farmed” meat. Next on the list of cancer-promoters is sugar (this includes ALL forms of sugar, including fructose and grains). To me, sugar has no redeeming value at all, because they found that the more we consume it, the more we’re fuelling every single chronic disease. In fact, there was a study done about a year ago which concluded that sugar is a universal mechanism for chronic disease. It kicks up inflammation. It kicks up oxygen free radicals. Those are the two main processes we see that underlie any single chronic disorder, including cancers. It fuels the growth of breast cancers, because glucose is cancer’s favorite food. The more you consume, the faster it grows. Next is the type of fats that you consume. It’s important to remember that every cell membrane is made out of fat, as is your brain. Bad-fats in the diet are a major contributor to ill health and cancer. On the list of fats to eliminate are: Animal fats from CAFO-raised animals, Trans fats and Partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated fats Healthy fats of particular importance for cancer prevention are omega-3 and omega-9. Omega-3 in particular serves to effectively slow down tumor growth in estrogen-sensitive cancers such as breast-, prostate- and colon cancers. Fourth on the list of cancer promoters is ANY item that contains xenoestrogens

(chemicals that mimic estrogen). This can become a rather long list once you start including any food contaminated with such estrogen-mimicking chemicals, such as BPA, found in the linings of canned goods and in plastics. The list gets truly unwieldy when you include personal care products that contain such chemicals as well. There are case reports of five- and six-yearolds going through secondary sex characteristics because of the shampoo that they were using. There are all sorts of different sources where we’re exposed to these chemicals from our foods and from the products that we use. What we’re seeing is younger and younger puberty. Around the world, the average age is about 16 years old. In the United States, it’s 10 years old now, and sometimes even younger. The problem is that with each menstrual period there is a surge of estradiol, which is the strongest, most abundant form of estrogen, and the one that’s most associated with breast cancer. If you start your period very young, you’ll have more periods in your lifetime than what a person would have, obviously, if they started at an older age. In addition to that, when a girl goes through puberty, her breast cells become really sensitive to environmental toxins, radiation, and so forth. They’re considered immature. They haven’t differentiated– as a more scientific term for it– so there’s a longer period of time that they’re exposed to these toxins
where they have a greater sensitivity.” If you would like to learn more about Integrative Cancer Care go to my website: atkinswellness.com or call my office, I’d be happy to discuss it with you.

As a Real Estate Broker, I have met with many potential sellers in the last few weeks to discuss pricing strategies for their home. When I explain the compelling strategy of pricing their house at market value or even under, Sellers fear that Buyers will still come in with “low ball” offers. They feel they need to “leave room for negotiating” and tend to want to price it on the higher side. They find it hard to believe that if you price your house right, you will get that number or maybe even higher. Well, the proof that this strategy works is in the results. The following are just a few of the transactions I was involved in as the Listing Agent and show that buyers will pay the asking price or very close to and even higher. •House in Huntington listed for $199,000 sells for $235,000 •House in Syosset listed for $495,000 sells for $506,000 •House in Huntington listed for $949,000 sells for $949,000
36 • village connection • march 2012
•House in Huntington listed for $549,000 sells for $549,000 •House in Lloyd Harbor listed for $1,495,000 sells for $1,575,000. Of course the rebuttal to the above is that these sellers gave their house away and they should have listed higher. Although these Sellers initially did feel they should have priced their house higher, it did not take them long to realize that they did indeed get a great price for their house. Across the board, all my Sellers that took the compelling pricing approach were extremely grateful that they had done so. I spend enough time with Buyers to know for certain that when a house is priced right, they: 1. Will come quickly to see the house and not even let a snow storm hold them back 2. Will not hesitate to put in a full price offer 3. Will even put in a higher offer if they have a greater fear of loss 4. Will overlook objections the house may have. The noise from a nearby highway, train, etc will interestingly not be heard by the Buyers because they are so consumed with the great price. So this Seller Tip is all about one word…COMPELLING! My recommendation to all Sellers is to evoke interest in a powerful irresistible way. And to do it with the onset of the listing when you have the best opportunity to sell your house for the most money. A house with a listing price that is not even in the realm of where recent comparables have sold, is considered by Buyers to not be in the market. They will not want to see it even with encouragement by their Broker to do so. If you’re thinking about listing your home OR if you’re struggling to sell your home, I can help. Magnificent Magnolias When there is not too much happening in the yard in midwinter I can always look out the back of my house and see a splendid reminder of the spring which is soon to come. Right after I get up in the morning I take a peek out my bedroom window just to get rejuvenated by the view that nature displays. There, in all its glory, is the huge Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata) that I planted many years ago. I originally had planted it by my patio closer to the house until I realized it would not take too long for it to overgrow that area. I transplanted it while it was still young to a new location further back, where it now gives a magnificent display of deliciously fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers in April. The plant is covered with large, plump, fuzzy, silverywhite buds in the winter months, which offer an awesome display before it blooms. Since it provides a lot of shade in the summer, it is also a perfect place to set up a lawn chair under its canopy and relax on a hot summer day. I pruned all the lower branches so that it has a small treelike appearance rather than a large shrub. That helped to open up the area and allow for me to plant some shade loving, woodland type perennials around the understory. They are a welcome treat when they burst forth in color as the days begin to warm up. I have a huge Bleeding Heart that comes up every year underneath the magnolia along with Daffodils, Solomon Seal, Shooting Star, Sweet Woodruff, Ferns and Spanish Bluebells. There are many varieties of magnolias that are hardy to Long Island but my favorite has got to be the Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana). It is a great ornamental landscape tree because of its attractive foliage, flower and fruit. This variety is native to the southeast U.S where it grows in moist areas near streams and swamps. It is also known as Swamp Magnolia for this reason and prefers a humus rich, moist soil in the landscape. The fruits provide a great food source for wildlife and birds. The seed heads are covered with a thin, fleshy, red coat that makes an outstanding display. In the northeast it’s deciduous, growing 15 to 20 ft., but is evergreen in the southern states

where it also grows larger. The smooth, gray bark has a scent of bay laurel spice and the flowers have a magnificent sweet lemon fragrance that bloom in late spring and early summer. ‘Northern Belle’ is one of the hardiest varieties. Many are familiar with the Saucer Magnolia in this area (Magnolia soulangeana), which produce large blossoms in the early spring usually with deep purplish pink or majenta color flowers combined with white. They are one of the earliest blooming shrubs in spring, around the same time the forsythia’s are in bloom, and are always a welcome sight in any garden after the long winter. There are many different varieties of Saucer Magnolia and they grow as a small multi-stemmed tree or large shrub. When I was in Savannah and Charleston several years ago, the Southern Magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora) that I saw there were a sight to behold. The huge white flowers with the large glossy green leaves are amazing to see. The rusty brown appearance on the underside of the leaves is one of the outstanding characteristics of this variety. They do grow on Long Island but should have some winter protection, especially from the wind. The variety ‘Edith Bogue’ is probably one of the best Southern magnolias for this zone. There certainly are plenty of varieties of magnolias that you can use in your landscape. Deciding which one you want may be the more difficult choice!

Three Generations of Quality Workmanship Artie’s Collision has been Long Island’s Body Shop of choice since 1960. What started in Nassau County over 50 years ago, has grown and expanded to encompass three locations in Huntington, Lawrence and Long Beach. “Artie’s Collision was founded by my dad and grandfather in Lawrence,” according to third generation Artie Valenti, who runs the location on New York Avenue in Huntington. “I’ve worked in the business since my early teens and during vacations while attending Syracuse University. In 1998 I was able to open my own auto body and collision business here in Huntington.” These days, as many businesses come and go, the pride in workmanship and sterling reputation of Artie’s Collision means a lot to customers. Experts in collision repairs, they are an approved facility for major insurance companies, and will make your repair less stressful by handling appointments and arrangements with adjusters and agents. The shop also does all windshield and glass installation, paintless dent removal, pinstriping, professional detailing and 24hour towing. Artie’s Collision offers free pickup and delivery of your vehicle and a lifetime guarantee on all work. They pride themselves on their courteous service and they are happy to provide a free written estimate. If you have a leased vehicle that is scheduled for return, Artie’s offers free inspections and will outline potential problem areas that a leasing company is likely to charge for. If a vehicle is returned damaged to a leasing company, you are basically at their mercy as to the cost of repairs, which may be inflated. We all depend so much on our vehicles on Long Island; maintaining them in top condition is paramount. With that in mind, it is invaluable to know that there is a reputable and honest business to turn to whenever you need body or collision work. In 2004, Artie’s Collision received the Automotive Business of

Happy SAFE St. Patrick’s Day Let’s be honest—most people look forward to St. Patrick’s Day for the drinking. The parades are great and pinching people for not wearing green is fun, but the event’s spirit rests at the bottom of a good bottle of whiskey and a few pints of Guinness. And Irish stereotypes aside, that’s as it should be. After all, the levity and good natured exuberance of St. Paddy’s help make it such a popular and care free celebration. However, the greater levels alcohol consumption also make it a day to be responsible. Check out these five St. Patrick’s Day Safety tips to help you successfully navigate the hoopla and festivities on March 17th. Predetermine a safe way to get home for you and your friends. Whether you’re watching a parade hosting a party or enjoying yourself at the local pub, ensure everyone in your group has a safe means of returning home if you plan to drink. Select a designated driver, arrange for a cab, plot a bus route, or figure out a nearby place you can crash for the night. It’s a good idea to keep route maps of local public transportation, as well as the numbers for taxi companies handy during the day. Eat. Drinking on an empty stomach is a good way to end your St. Paddy’s day a lot earlier than planned. Make sure to get some nutrients in you to help absorb that alcohol. Lots of corned beef and cabbage will help absorb the spirits in your system! Stay hydrated. Getting enough water will also help keep the
party going on longer, and decrease the likelihood you’ll have a March 18th hangover. If you feel impaired, don’t get behind the wheel. In the eyes of the law, impaired driving is drunk driving, and even if you feel fine, a breathalyzer might not concur. With all the checkpoints on the roads, it’s best to play it extra safe. If you have even the least bit of doubt, don’t drive. Be extra cautious on the roads. Just because you’re a safe and sober driver doesn’t mean other people are. A disproportionate of traffic accidents on St. Patrick’s Day are caused by people driving under the influence. Whether you’re driving or just crossing the street on foot, keep your awareness levels high. St. Patrick’s Day calls for drinks with friends, a heap of green, and a healthy dose of responsibility. With that formula and the above tips, you can make March 17 a greater and safer night out for you and your loved ones. A theme that runs through these columns has been the concept of buyer’s remorse as it applies to interior design. I mention this concept often because it is so avoidable. It is not the goal of interior designers to furnish our own homes with items that our clients have rejected, and we take great pains to prevent that from happening. Happily, I am the owner of only two pieces that were rejected by clients, and have been a trained professional decorator for nearly thirty years--a pretty good record. Good designers work very hard to make sure that the items we order will delight the client and fit properly in their space. Lots of dotted i’s and crossed t’s figure in to the designer’s plan (along with the proper schooling and on-job experience, of course.) This column has always encouraged readers to try to tackle their own projects if a systematic approach is taken. However, there is no substitute for a professional designer’s involvement--from as early on into the project as possible--to increase the likelihood of the desired outcome. Many people are choosing to buy expensive items on line from luxury web sites. I deal with many vendors, some of whose products are also offered on many
beautifully designed ” luxury products and services” sites. We sign up and our inboxes are flooded with high end wares that endlessly bombard the senses with heavily discounted temptations. The “add to cart” click is often made as easily for a 9’X12’ carpet as it is for a book or a shirt. Most of these items are a “final sale” as well. Perhaps you don’t need your new dining room chair to be “the perfect chair.” But think very carefully in the realm of furnishings before you click “buy now.” Are you sure that the “beige” rug is compatible with the other beiges in your room? Go to the paint store and look at a paint fan-deck of colors, and you will see that there are hundreds of beiges-from oatmeal-y taupes to golden caramels--all “beige!” In interior design, I have always told my clients that “almost doesn’t count.” You need to eliminate as many unknown variables as possible. That is how the perfect chair, for example, is created for you. You sit in the floor models and pick out the best choice. Fabrics and finish choices are presented to you and samples provided and coordinated in color, scale and style. The soon to be happy result is underway. It takes a lot more than a click.

Weathering Retirement It has taken getting used to, but most of the time I’m cool with retirement. According to articles written about retirement, there are five emotional stages we oldies must go through which follow this approximate timetable: 1. Imagination (a distant dream) 6 to 15 years before retiring 2. Anticipation (pre-retirement planning) within 5 years of retirement 3. Liberation (I’m free! Leading into a honeymoon period) – up to 2 years after retirement 4. Reorientation (disenchantment causing formation of new identity) 2 to 15 years after 5. Reconciliation (coming to terms and contentment) 16 or more years after Accordingly - since I retired 6 years ago – I’m presently trying to find the new me inside a very confused brain. The key for me is to remain involved, which is fairly easy to do most of the year except for the bleak days of winter. Springtime, with warming weather, increasing daylight hours and plants blooming everywhere sets the stage for a wonderfully active summertime. Autumn is great with comfortable temperatures, colorful scenery and Thanksgiving. Gift buying in December pulls me along to the New Year’s holiday followed by ….. Winter.
The frigid days in January and February, with brief daylight hours, seem overly long and drab. Throw in brisk New York winds, with occasional slippery snow, and there’s nothing for this senior to celebrate. However, this is a far cry from my working days when January and February meant toiling nights and weekends feverishly preparing tax returns and financial statements like a maniac. While I don’t miss those hyper work months, winter did seem to go by quickly. Oh well, according to the above timetable I still have 9 more years to sort out my winter blues and I’m sure I’ll get there. For now I’m comforted in the thought that each bleak winter day brings springtime closer with its longer daylight, warm temperatures, lovely flowers and a long, long time until next winter.

Make a Designer Splash WHEN PLANNING YOUR POOL DECK
A
s the days get longer, for many homeowners thoughts turn to planning that new, in-ground pool as part of their backyard master plan. Resort-like advantages aside, homeowners are quickly learning that a pool with an adjoining pool deck, when welldesigned and properly installed, can actually increase the appraised value of a home even in times of a real estate downturn. Homeowners also know that a patio area with added comfort amenities combined with the conveniences for outdoor dining and entertaining can also increase their quality of life for years to follow.
But only some take into account the other benefits that choosing concrete pavers in lieu of other pavement materials such as poured or stamped concrete, natural flagstone, and composite decking can bring to the equation. Stamped concrete, which is actually a variation of poured concrete and designed to mimic pavers, and an actual interlocking concrete paver system are two of the most popular choices for a patio or pool deck. Both are, relatively speaking, durable and affordable. Even so, the differences in performance between pavers and stamped concrete are significant and should be taken into consideration before making a final decision. Although many stamped patterns are available, stamped concrete is made of low-density concrete and will ultimately crack. The contractor's responsibility is to put in control joints to cause the concrete to crack at pre-determined places, but sometimes the concrete will crack where it will spoil the finished appearance of the pattern and compromise the integrity of the finished pavement. The only way to assure that cracking will not occur is to go the route of concrete pavers, which are composed of a higher-density, lower absorption concrete mix design and are not prone to damage from freeze/thaw cycles, deicing salts or snow plowing. They are also smoother and more skid-resistant, making their surfaces safer for poolside activities especially when children are involved. Paver patterns can be created in an almost unlimited range according to a contractor’s custom motif or by referring to prescribed patterns made available by manufacturers. Unlike stamped concrete, concrete pavers constitute an engineered system. As a function of the interlocking system, the pavers are set in sand over an aggregate base and compacted soil. Additional sand is swept into the joints until all the joints are filled. When properly installed, the pavement will not heave (lift) as can a poured concrete pavement. The sand-set system allows for easy access to underground, poolside utilities by simply removing pavers and replacing them subsequent to making the repairs. Some consumers are concerned about the possibility of the sand loosening as a result of the more frequent hosing down of pool areas. The use of polymeric sand is almost identical to using regular paver joint sand except for the application of water to it once it is in the joints, which activates the setting process and causes the sand to harden. Once set, polymeric sand becomes firm and locks between the joints. Among its suggested uses includes pool decks. Continue the poolside design by integrating a spa or a broader outdoor lifestyle environment. You can separate cooking, dining and entertainment areas by designating them to a matching, raised paver patio complete with decorative columns, landscape walls and casual seating walls placed under a stylish, low-maintenance pergola or covered pavilion for added protection and all-season enjoyment.

PLANNING YOUR NEW KITCHEN
renew or redo?
Upgrading the kitchen is on many homeowners' "to do" list. And for good reason. A minor kitchen remodel ranks fourth on the list of the top 10 home improvement projects that deliver return on investment. But whether you're in it for the investment, or just to freshen up the space in your home where people spend the most time, a new kitchen look could be a fun, impactful improvement to your house. Some may start with a weekend project and a $40 can of paint, while others will jump into a $50,000-plus remodel. Either way, one thing is for sure - you can't go wrong with a beautiful, highly functional kitchen.
A FULL REMODEL Homeowners throughout the country are staying in their homes longer than they once did. Because of that, significant remodeling projects tend to rise to the top of the priority list. If you're in it for the long haul (or even to ensure you get that return on investment), a complete kitchen remodel could be for you. When the entire room footprint is your canvas, the possibilities are exciting. While a contractor is recommended for most of these projects, make sure you're involved in exploring the options that will help you use this space as wisely as possible (yet provide beautiful decor in the process):
A SIMPLE REFRESH If time or budget constraints limit you to changing just a few basic elements of the kitchen, focus on things that make the most impact. Even novice do-it-yourself homeowners can complete many of these items on their own:
Install display shelves. This hot kitchen trend is an eyecatching alternative to hanging wall cabinets. Taking down cabinets is a pretty simple task for two and hanging the shelves is even easier.
Paint the walls. Painting always tops the to-do list when a mini makeover is in order. It's an affordable, high-impact way to change the decor of a kitchen. If you're not changing out cabinets or countertops, be sure to select a color that complements those major elements. Add new accessories. Switching out the small decor details in a kitchen can make the room feel entirely new. Maybe it's replacing bar stools at the island, reupholstering pillows or a bench cushion, or even hanging a few new pieces of art or photos on the wall. Change the faucet. Often underestimated, the kitchen faucet has a lot of influence in the overall style of the room. Choosing a more up-to-date pull-down or pull-out faucet not only improves the look of the room, but can add significant convenience and functionality.
52 • village connection • march 2012
Evaluate the flow of the workspaces. Adding more water sources to your room could improve efficiency and ease. Consider a simple, yet beautiful faucet on the island for prep, a pot filler by the stove to help while cooking, and a hard-working faucet at the main sink for clean-up. Mix and match your surfaces. Replacing countertops is one of the most noticeable changes to any kitchen venue. Quartz surfaces are a popular choice, providing a unique combination of quality, hygiene and a look of natural stone. Selecting a lighter color surface for the perimeter and a darker, bolder color for the island is a great way to add another design element to the room. With today's growing popularity in cooking and a rise in the number of at-home chefs, kitchen flow and workspace needs are critical aspects to consider when completely remodeling your kitchen.

What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others. That is what I love about photographing people. A great photograph can change a persons outlook on their life, current situation, or bring them back to a place where they felt something special that only a photograph or video can remind you of with such an emotional impact. I've been involved in technology and the arts since I was in high school. I love creating and have often been told I have the "heart and mind of an artist." As I have both shot national ad campaigns and designed database driven analytical software, integrated software applications, and a futuristic social media network, Weepwa.com. I have the ability to use both left side and right side of my brain. I was an athlete most of my life and know what it is like to work with a team and I am a team player. Although I have had both creative and technical jobs, I find myself loving the fact that I am building Http://www.Weepwa.com as I get to do both, a dream job I must admit despite the challenges.

S
o, my Huntington connection dragged me kicking and screaming around the village again looking for Village Connection’s next top cover model. In the end Jim said, “John, I love your work. You get to pick the cover model this month.” After he swore he would honor my decision, I chose Jim. Partially because Jim had me schlepping around taking portraits of Huntingtonites on the fly, and partially because Jim helped reinvigorate my passion for photojournalism after spending many hours at my computer working on Weepwa.com. As I have become a bit of a reclusive artist and businessman these days, it took a chariot like 60 • village connection • march 2012
Huntington Jim Savalli to get me out and start creating again. Jim is the unofficial Mayor of Huntington. After only a few days, I found out that the people of Huntington, and Huntington’s nightlife are passionate about the arts, partying, and just plain old catching up with friends and neighbors, while being entertained by all the village has to offer. When I photograph people, I often ask them, “Where’s the love?” to get them to genuinely smile. In this photo montage a lot of that love was captured exclusively for Jim on his mission to befriend everyone on the North Shore (which he seems to be accomplishing quite well).

Long IslanD Jazz Vocalist
JB Baretsky Fresh, New Talent In the Form of an Old Soul
D
uring a time when the music scene seems to be under the reign of pop princesses like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Rihanna, 24-year-old JB Baretsky is summoning the stylings of a simpler time—one long before the advents of auto-tune, and dresses made of meat. A Commack native, Baretsky wasn’t born into a family of musical mavens, but still, he grew up to develop a sonorous skill that could not be ignored. “I had always been in bands,” he said of his adolescence. “I thought I was Rob Thomas.” It wasn’t until one pivotal day when he was indulging himself in daring karaoke choices that he realized he was able to hold his own when singing vintage tunes by the likes of Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Baretsky’s first live performance was in January of 2009, and he has since played everywhere from a bar best described as “the most disgusting, out-of-the-way, hole-in-the-wall” to New York City’s legendary Lincoln Center, which he cites as being one of the few times he felt pangs of pre-performance nerves. But stage-fright isn’t something to which he normally succumbs. “I’ve always enjoyed being in front of people,” Baretsky said. “When I was in elementary school, sometimes we had only halfdays. If the class was good, they’d let me go up and do 15 minutes of pantomime or something to make the kids laugh.” Even during his college years, he often found himself in front of an audience, whether he was doing improvisational comedy or performing as part of a jazz band. In addition to singing, Baretsky’s musical finesse also extends to the piano, guitar, bass, harmonica, and trumpet, although, his instrument of choice tends to be his vocal chords.
68 • village connection • march 2012
BY DANIELLE KRAESE Looking to broaden his appeal to include his own peers, he has uploaded several recordings on YouTube in which he puts his own jazzy spin on current hit songs, such as Taio Cruz’s club sensation, “Dynamite,” and Mike Posner’s “Cooler Than Me.” Despite his dabbling in modern hits, he still can’t help but lament the fact that the mainstream popularity of jazz seems to be waning as time progresses. “The style is appreciated and the music isn’t and that really bothers me,” Baretsky said. “If you break down some of today’s music, it’s really just a syncopated computer beat, four basic chords, and a couple lyrics and that’s it. They just speed up the beat to make it fancy and next you thing you know it’s a number one hit on the radio.” But Baretsky plans to take his own recordings beyond the realm of YouTube later on this year when he drops his debut album, “Less is More,” which will include a mix of the classic standards that he loves to perform as well as jazz renditions of popular hit tracks and even some of his own original songs. “One Nighter” is the first of his recordings that he actually co-wrote. The subject matter of the single is just what its name suggests, but with the combination of a cool, mellow tempo and rich vocals, Baretsky manages to make the typical events of a tipsy night in college sound charming—a little romantic, even. Looking toward the future, he hopes to eventually hit the road to expand his fan base beyond the confines of New York and maybe even take his show southbound. But before he sets off to take on the rest of the East Coast, Baretsky is scheduled to make his return to Huntington Social, one of the newest spots in the village for dinner, drinks, and live music. He will be performing on Friday, March 16, at 9 p.m. The kitchen will be open until 11 p.m., but reservations are recommended for dinner.

Nature’s Bounty at the atrium
72 • village connection • march 2012
Art League of Long Island and his private studio, among other venues, has twelve evocatively hued and detailed watercolors on display. “His paintings are wonderful records of nature at its most sublime,” Mr. Grabowski said of Mr. Ponsot’s idyllic scenes. Of particular interest is “The Summer Muse,” which immortalizes the beauty of the Central Park Conservatory Garden. This whimsical watercolor conveys the majesty of a water lily-strewn pond from the vantage point of a statue. EunJung Park is a mixed media artist who works on a large scale, with striking and dramatic results, Mr. Grabowski indicated. Ms. Park sometimes glues clear plastic rods over her pieces to great effect. Tonito Valderrama is an internationally known environmental artist and educator whose pieces poetically meld art and nature. “My work speaks of the timeless marriage between man and nature that must not be forgotten,” Mr. Valderrama said of his creations which celebrate the intrinsic nuances of all media, be it

“Nature’s Bounty,” a multimedia tribute to the grandeur of nature as seen through the eyes of five artists, is currently on display at the Art-trium, the Huntington Arts Council’s satellite gallery in Melville. The exhibit, which showcases the diverse work of Andrea M. Gordon, EunJung Park, Denis Ponsot, Susan Silkowitz, and Tonito Valderrama, can be viewed through April 30. Curator William Grabowski wanted the artists to share their unique impressions as to “how they relate to the world of nature in all its vastness.” The show brings together “a very eclectic and interesting blend of talent,” he indicated. According to Mr. Grabowski, Susan Silkowitz has traveled extensively, and viewers will find that the gifted photographer has an eye for “beautiful animals and beautiful people.” Her images, which include a scarlet macaw that she photographed in Ecuador and a gaily dressed Mexican dancer, resonate with vivacious color, Mr. Grabowski indicated. Photographer Andrea M. Gordon, on the other hand, likes to get up close and personal, highlighting the richness of texture and detail in her large scale images of subject matter, including flowers and fruit, printed on canvas. Through her viewfinder, a common dandelion gone to seed, becomes almost crystal-like, hence the title, “Dandelion Chandelier.” Denis Ponsot, who teaches painting at the School of Visual Arts, the

found objects, bamboo, stone, sand, clay, wood, or the earth itself. Mr. Valderrama used a hammer and chisel to hand-carve “Nature’s Gift” from a piece of found wood. “It is my son’s face when he was a baby, emerging from the natural wood,” Mr. Valderrama said of this particularly poignant piece which expresses mankind’s “special bond with nature” which must be cherished and respected. The Art-trium, located at 25 Melville Park Road in the heart of Melville’s Route 110 corporate corridor, is open Monday through Friday from 7 am to 7 pm and on Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm. Rachel Ray has that show on the Food Network, $40 a day, where she travels around for just $40 a day. $40 a day? What kind of a crappy vacation is that gonna be? I heard a commercial for laser hair removal. The person said “it’s the best decision I’ve ever made!” If deciding not to have to shave your armpits any more is THE BEST decision you’ve EVER made, you need more challenges in your life. I don't understand why people send you an email, and then call you immediately to ask you if you've read their email. My friend had eye surgery and has 20/20 vision. Now when I wake up in the middle of the night and want to know what time it is, instead of trying to read the clock, I call him. I was born in Brooklyn. But my parents wanted to live where it was less congested, so we moved to Queens. I just read the book The Secret, which states that you ARE what you THINK about. But now I judge people and say to myself, “Well what the hell was HE THINKING ABOUT?”

WE’RE LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD FRIENDS
No matter how much Chinese takeout you order they tell you 15 minutes. “I’ll have a pint of white rice please.” 15 minute! “Yes, I’d like to order everything on this menu”. 15 minute! I’m sort of a mix between Baby Boomer and Generation X. While I enjoy the benefits of modern technology, I find all of you people texting & tweeting annoying.

Lily - Embellished Limited Edition Canvas available at LaMantia Gallery The luminescent beauty and lyrical quality of Richard S Johnson’s work is what captivates collectors today. Johnson’s sure brush strokes, bold use of color and impasto, and delicate rendering of the human face and form all work together in harmony to create “Poetic Intimacy.” “When I paint, it is my hope to reach beyond the canvas and engage the viewer, to connect on the shared plane of experiences, to nod together and say, “Yes, that is what youth is like, that is what a rose is like, that is what morning light feels like. I seek to create shared moments.” - Richard Johnson

he “Ides of March” are upon us, signifying the 15th day of the month. In modern times the phrase “Ides of March” is known for the date in history when Julius Caesar was assassinated. The “Ides of March” look forward to a bright warm spring welcoming the flowers to open. Summer birds are welcomed home to sing freely giving all of us a new born feeling of inspiration and rebirth. We all but have to move and “March” forward with all the trials and tribulations that life has to throw at us. Looking back we say goodbye to the chill of winter’s beauty & her quiet still slumber. Sitting near the fire and watching through the window as the wind and snow carve designs in the landscape transforming before our eyes. Immerging from inside the home we will be brought to the outdoor living space to enjoy a warmer side of life. Such is a gift. March brings a feeling of celebration & The Irish eyes will be smiling on us as a grand parade will march down Main Street Huntington, so be there with your smile and thinking in a green way about you. Festivities bring closeness with family and friends at Palm Sunday & Passover and I truly believe these events in life that we share to be the most important we possess and possessions to be much less. Love is the most important thing in life that we share so give all that your heart has to offer and experience with one another. Let this season of rebirth transcend into our hearts and bring us closer to family and friends. March 11, 2012 - 2 am daylight savings ends until November 4th. This day always seems to be the one that brings home the warm feelings that summer is just around the corner. Let’s hope the March winds are gentle one’s and hasten us to a warm cool spring!

March 2012 Mars opposes Neptune. Mars in Virgo is the original fussbudget over details and overlooks the essentials. The energies of Neptune in Pisces are best used by persuasion rather than pressure. It rules fog and mist, therefore not allowing things to be seen clearly. Now we have these two planets opposing one another. The difficulties come through other people’s actions rather than through ones own actions. Deception can be a concern. Mars will show where this activity occurs, promising more than can be delivered by others not presenting themselves clearly.

Aloha from Paradise
beer
Kona Brewing Company was started by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa. The pair had a dream to create fresh, local island brews made with spirit, passion and quality. Their love of Hawaii, and a desire to protect the pristine environment there, brought them to the Big Island to fulfill their vision. Their ales and lagers are handcrafted with some of the best ingredients the islands have to offer with the goal of creating complex, full tasting beers with a relaxed style and charm that expresses their Hawaii based roots. Koko Brown Nut Brown Ale has a nutty toffee flavor and aroma that sends you straight to the beaches of Paradise thanks in part to the use of real toasted coconut during the brewing process. Is there anything more iconic of the lush tropics than the coconut? Kick back with a Koko Brown and savor the mahogany color and smooth, roasty malt taste. Available Winter/Spring
Suggested Food Pairings Koko Brown pairs well with coconut and caramel flavors, such as Thai curries, BBQ meats and carne asada. Its refreshing nutty aroma makes for the perfect beer after a day on the water.
