It takes a whole community to nurture healthy, strong families. The Town of Huntington, offering world-class facilities and resources for parents and kids, was a fitting backdrop for this year’s Mother’s Day photo essay featuring the Spring 2012 Huntington Hot List.

• New Birthday Party Themes • Trendy Clothes for Infant-14 (Girls Only)

The tulips blooming in Heckscher Park herald spring in the Village better than most anywhere in town. Complimented by the regal Heckscher Museum of Art, it is an idyllic setting for families to spend quality time together, a place for children to play, a gorgeous space in which to enjoy nature.

We then splashed in the crystal blue waters of the Huntington YMCA pool. The Huntington Y is all about building a stronger community with programs for healthy living, youth development and social responsibility. Generations of families learn to swim at the Y. Kids grow up taking Mommy & Me classes. It is a place for moms and families to connect with one another. There’s something for everyone (and kids of any age) at their community Y. Many thanks to Joseph Winkler of North Shore Aquatics Dive Center for being our Safety Diver in the water with us and supplying snorkel gear, and to the Y’s own Aquatics Director Joyce Sviba who supervised the safety of everyone in the water. Sirena, Goddess of the Sea We have always been drawn to the sea. Through our ecotourism travel company Ceviche Tours we do a lot of underwater photography, capturing the majesty of Whale Sharks, Sail Fish, Sea Turtles and other marine life. That love was the inspiration for the new spring beauty collection Sirena: Goddess of the Sea. The flow and grace of marine life under the water translated perfectly to fashion photography with regard to this graceful fluid motion.

Sirena pays tribute to moms on this Mother’s Day with its strength, poise, beauty and style. Frocks feature softly washed Caribbean tones echoing an exotic seashore hideaway. Skin has a mother-of-pearl sheen: a slightly matte, healthy shine. Makeup compliments the season’s watery palette with lips in Fire Coral Red standing out in contrast to eyelashes lined in Black Coral. Eyelids whisper in seafoam greens and pastels reminiscent of pretty seashells. The trend for hair is a past-the-shoulder length, highlighted with a color-melting technique that infuses an ombre-like graduation of tone where darker roots slowly give way to a lighter, sunkissed shade on the ends. Medium browns lazily soften into sandy blondes; warmer tones are highlighted with deep caramel that melts to a golden blonde.

Devin Jewelers: The name to trust in fine jewelry since 1972 By Elise Pearlman Whether it’s a diamond engagement ring or a necklace shimmering with precious stones, Devin Jewelers of East Northport has been the name to trust for fine jewelry since 1972. In fact, when owners and cousins Domenick Polimeni and Vincent Buoniello opened their business 40 years ago, they continued a family legacy dating back 60 years. Vincent gained his expertise at Tudor Jewelers, his father’s store in Elmont, and eventually became owner. Domenick, whose fatherin-law was involved in the jewelry business, previously worked on Manhattan’s famed Canal Street. When Vincent sold the Elmont store, both men brought their extensive knowledge of all phases of the jewelry business, as well as customer service, to East Northport. The store will celebrate its 40th anniversary in November. “The foundation of the jewelry business is trust,” Domenick said, adding that the partners didn’t realize how dedicated their customers were until they opened in East Northport. “People sought us out,” Domenick said of the clientele who traveled in from Elmont. “We are now serving the grandchildren and great grandchildren of many of our original customers.” In addition to the time-tested classics, Devin Jewelers follows the latest trends in jewelry. Due to the soaring price of gold, jewelry which combines gold and silver is really hot now. It’s the best of both precious metals and affordable, Domenick indicated. Also catching the eyes and hearts of customers are pieces boasting big beads and colorful precious stones, Vincent indicated. Particularly dazzling are necklaces and bracelets made up of strands of diminutive faceted rubies and sapphires, as well as coral, peridot, onyx, and topaz. For lovers of tourmaline, there’s literally a rainbow of choices. The two owners pride themselves on their large inventory, as well as personal service, including in-house repairs and special orders.

24 • village connection • may 2012

The store is unique in showcasing a large variety of children’s and religious jewelry. “All work is done on the premises,” Domenick said, adding that they have a craftsman who works with customers to design and create the visions of their dreams. Devin Jewelers also excels at remodeling old or inherited jewelry into new and up-to-date pieces, Vincent indicated. Devin Jewelers is located at 536 Larkfield Road, East Northport. The store is open Monday through Friday, from 9:30 am to 6 pm, and on Saturdays, from 9:30 am to 5 pm. All major credit cards are accepted. For information, call (631) 368-7010.

LaMantia Gallery, co-owned by James LaMantia and Robert Bluver, is embarking on its 23rd year in business. Highly applauded by Décor Magazine for retail excellence, the quality and diversity of its artistic offerings have earned the gallery an international reputation, and guests will be reminded why with the opening of the newest exhibit, “Masters of the Palette Knife,” on Saturday, May 19. Art lovers will have the privilege of meeting renowned French painter Jaline Pol, who is flying in from her homeland for the opening. I remember the first time that I saw one of Ms. Pol’s paintings in the window of LaMantia Gallery. I was stunned. One of the finest contemporary French Impressionists of our time, Ms. Pol uses the palette knife to create an astounding three-dimensional effect. The artist, who studied at Paris’

Don’t Let Injuries Stop You From Exercising Almost everyone should be able to do some level of exercise. I work with teenagers all the way up to centenarians. They all exercise at some level and many of my elderly clients have numerous illnesses and health issues and daily exercise is still a way of life for them. How do they do it and how can you do it if you are injured? It’s called modification. Every exercise can be modified for specific individuals. If it can not be modified to meet your needs then there are always other exercises that you can replace it with. You want to consult with your physician before you start any exercise program especially to discuss modifications due to injury or illness.

36 • village connection • may 2012

Here are some quick intense exercises you can do at home and modifications for each. Five exercises to be done for 60 seconds each and performed back to back with no rest in between. You may burn between 50 and 100 calories in 5 minutes depending on your weight, eating habits etc. You can also repeat this sequence as many times as you want to get a longer workout. Jumping Jacks - Modifications include not jumping and stepping leg out to the side and back in and/or keeping arms at your side.

Squats - Keep knees over your ankles, heels flat. Stick your bottom out behind you and sit down to 90 degrees at your knees then back up to a standing position. Modifications include squatting down half way to 90 degrees and back up or squatting down and holding it in place.

Birkenstock Depot • 285 Main Street • Huntington Dr. Richard E. Young • Dr. Arlene L. Vazquez-Young

Knee Ups - Alternate high knee lifts, fast and quick. Modifications include alternating knee lifts without jumping or alternating leg lifts while keeping knee straight. Push Ups - On your toes, abs tight, back straight, bend and straighten elbows to 90 degrees. Modifications include bending elbows only half way to 90 degrees or going on to your knees. Full Sit Ups - Lie on the floor, keep knees bent and feet on the floor. Sit all the way up and then go all the way back down and just before you touch the floor come back up. Modifications include laying on your back with your hands behind your head, squeeze abdominals tightly, keep back flat and crunch your abs to lift your shoulders and upper trunk off of the floor. Lower down towards the floor and just before you touch the floor come back up. You can also hold the crunch up. I recommend joining a group personal training program or hiring a personal trainer or reading more about proper form and technique before performing any exercises. This will make the difference between becoming injured and staying healthy.

Nasal Irrigation- An Alternative Treatment Option For Sinusitis Sinus infection is the fifth most common reason where doctors regularly prescribe antibiotics. However, they are no help against most sinus infection, according to study published in the Journal of the American Medical association. Dr.Jane Garbutt of Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis, who lead the study said, “There is not much to be gained from antibiotics.”As in most cases where the causative agent is a virus, prescribing antibiotics is just worthless. In such a situation, another modality for treating sinus infection is Nasal irrigation, or nasal wash as commonly known, a technique that flushes out congested nasal passages with a saltwater solution with the help of a Neti Pot or a nasal bulb syringe. In a WebMD article, Evangeline Lausier, M.D., assistant clinical professor of medicine and director of clinical services at Duke University’s department of integrative medicine said, “I find it to be a first line of defence in dealing with complicated sinus problems and allergy problems.” He further added, “Particularly if you are developing congestion or have a sinus infection, it’s very helpful.” Sinusitis is a clinical condition characterized by inflammation of the lining of the sinuses. Sinuses are the air-filled spaces in the facial bones, which can produce mucus, a thick gelatinous fluid. Sinuses are lined by cilia; tiny hair like projections, which sweep out mucus through sinuses and nasal passages. Both mucus and cilia help in trapping bacteria and foreign substances from air that we breathe. Change in temperature or air pressure, excessive use of nasal decongestant, swimming, smoking, and allergy to dust and pollen can damage cilia, so they are not able to function properly. Hence, mucus gets accumulated inside sinuses and nasal passages. Blocked nasal passages produce typical symptoms of sinusitis such as.

sinuses and nasal passages.
Different types of nasal wash techniques are available but use depends on personal choice and doctor’s advice. Benefits of Nasal Irrigation • It thins out mucus allowing its easy clearance through sinuses and nasal passages • As it cleans mucus from the nasal passages, medications become more effective. • Improves coordination of cilia so they function effectively to trap bacteria and foreign particles and sweep them along with mucus • Cleans allergens, irritants, bacteria, and viruses from nasal passage, minimizing their effect • Decreases swelling in nose and increases airflow Use in moderation
Experts advised use of nasal irrigation for one to three weeks only, because it can be harmful when used regularly over a long period.

According to a study abstract published in the archives of American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), a patient practicing nasal irrigation for a year and then discontinuing it for a year had only 62% decreased incidence of sinusitis in the discontinuation phase. Repeated saline use may wash away beneficial antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents from mucus and hence result in increased frequency of acute infection. Nasal irrigation is contraindicated in those having the complaint of frequent nasal bleed. So next time when you have a sinus infection you can think of nasal irrigation rather than relying on antibiotics.

• Headache • Nasal congestion/stuffy nose • Pain or pressure over an affected sinus • Thick, yellow-green nasal discharge • Fever • Cough, especially worse at night • Bad breathe or halitosis • Decreased sense of smell and taste • Teeth ache Pain-killers, decongestants and antihistamines can offer temporary relief from sinusitis symptoms. Many doctors prescribed antibiotics for treating sinusitis considering bacteria as a cause for infection. However, antibiotics don’t seem to be a powerful weapon to fight the infection, especially when a causative agent is a virus. Nasal irrigation is a centuries-old technique that has been described in Ayurveda. The basic principle is to act on a root cause rather than proving only symptomatic relief. During the procedure a light saltwater solution, a mixture of the one-half teaspoon unionized salt in an 8-ounce of sterilized water, is poured into one nostril with the help of a Neti pot. As it flows through the nasal cavity into the other nostril, it washes out mucus and allergens from

A Safari to Adventure In January, East Northport residents Herb and Marsha Knopp embarked on a three week long journey of discovery in Africa. Herb, an award-winning member of Huntington Camera Club, whose travels have taken him to more than 40 countries around the world, recalled the unforgettable experience. “There are landscapes and wildlife that you won’t see anywhere else in the world,” Herb said of their expedition. The adventurous duo visited the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. By following tracks, their guide took them within ten feet of some of the world’s most exotic animals. Herb was most impressed by lions and what he observed of their social groups known as prides. The females#W hunt and stalk prey, but the males eat first. Then the females and the younger lions eat, with hyenas and jackals finishing the leftovers, he said. In contrast, leopards are more solitary and feast on their prey in trees. The Knopps also enjoyed viewing elephant families of all ages and sizes. They visited with indigenous Maasi people in a village

protected by brush fences poised picturesquely at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. “They are very friendly and proud of their culture,” Herb said of the Maasi who danced for their guests and showed off their school. The couple was awed by the stark but gorgeous landscapes, and many breathtaking photographs showcase the silhouettes of acacia trees and the blazing beauty of the setting sun. He is thrilled to have experienced the world described by Karen Blixen in her epic memoir, “Out of Africa,” Knopp said of the tour that he booked through Overseas Adventure Travel in Boston. Step # 1: Know what you can afford. You can’t effectively search for homes if you don’t know how much home you can afford. In today’s lending environment, it is crucial to know BEFORE you begin a home search what type of mortgage, and how much of a mortgage you can get. As REALTORS, we have to present your offer, but most homeowners will not negotiate with you until they know that you are qualified to buy their home. We are beginning to see multiple offers on homes. If you aren’t pre-approved with all your ‘ducks in a row’ your offer may be at the bottom of the list. It is crucial to work with a good lender throughout the home buying process. Interview a few and find someone that understands your needs and wants. Step#2: Know what you are looking for. How many homes will you own in your lifetime? Based on my own experience of having owned 5 homes and rented twice I can definitely say – there is no perfect house! Especially today – technology is changing, lifestyles are changing and your needs will be changing as your family grows. When thinking about what you want to buy, be as detailed as possible. First thing is to select the town(s) you want to live in. Long Island is a big place …where do you want to be – North shore, South shore Nassau County or Suffolk? Besides the obvious things like Style, Bedrooms & Baths think about garages, basements, property size, pool or room for one, onvenience to train or highways or shopping. Get a notebook and make your lists – do it separately and then compare notes – and be prepared to compromise. If your children

are old enough, involve them in the process also. We moved to Long Island as the result of a corporate transfer. We knew it would be the first of many moves, so we made it an adventure for our children. I remember asking them as we were unpacking in our new Long Island home, “So what kind of home should we look for next?” Yes, moving is a traumatic experience for everyone, but making it fun and giving everyone some input certainly helps! Agents on Long Island can offer you the services of ListingBook which lets you search for homes based on your must haves, and don’t wants. It links to your REALTOR so she can answer any questions and suggest new ‘must see’ properties as they become available. Step #3: Be realistic and flexible. Late night infomercials may sound good, but if you’re looking at foreclosures or short sales – you aren’t going to buy homes for pennies on the dollar in this area. Flexibility is very important. As I mentioned before, there is no such thing as a perfect home. If you have some flexibility built into your must haves and likes, you will find the entire process much less stressful. Negotiating down a price on items from the engineer inspection or other items is also not always realistic – the plumbing, heating and electric need to be in working order and to code and the roof must be free of leaks. The homeowner must also take care of termite issues. But that is it. Remember that in most cases it is important to be flexible with the home seller. They are people too. If you got a good price – then just buy the house. Haggling can kill a purchase.

Step#4: Understand the Home Buying Process Your agent’s job is to know the entire home buying process. But the more you do understand the less stressful and mystifying the process will be. Knowing the process will relieve some of your stress in the transaction. One of the most important things to understand is your purchase contract. There are timelines that must be complied with, and if they are not, you can suffer some pretty serious / expensive consequences. Here’s where the importance of a good attorney comes in …they will guide you and explain all the intricacies during the process. Do not be afraid to ask your agent, attorney, or lender questions. Lots of questions. Everyone in the process tends to toss about terms and acronyms that only those dealing with this stuff on a daily basis understand. Sometimes we forget we’re speaking in a different language. Don’t be shy. If there’s a term you don’t understand, ask. Step#5: Have fun! You are about to enter into one of the single largest financial transactions of your life. Stress is a given. But buying a home is also an exciting time! Hopefully you’ll select a team of people, an attorney, a lender and a real estate agent that you enjoy working with and that will make it a smooth transaction! The Bottom Line is that buying a home doesn’t have to be torture. There are no guarantees, but if you understand the process, work with the right people and try to have a little fun along the way there is no question that you can find a great home and get the transaction closed.

Whole House Automation Unlike IP (internet Protocol Abbreviation - Internet protocol, the method by which information is sent between any two computers on the Internet or Local Network) based digital Music systems, such as Sonos Wirelss HiFi System, This Months Article will consist of two parts, examples of what is going on with new emerging Whole House Automation Technology along with the benefits to creating a Automated home. July’s Article will consist of the exact technology that is widely available today!.

YOUR HOME

So many benefits emerge from today’s available technology – I will hit on the most interesting points and the benefit of automating your home. So you think automating your home is too expensive and difficult to set up? You think that you must fall into “I’m a Geek” category in order to control your HVAC system remotely? Wrong Wrong Wrong! Automating your home can be done all at once, or in very small steps leading to the overall final product of an extremely efficient home and convinces our fathers only dreamed about! The simple most important fact to creating a “smart home” is the planning stage. An Example of taking small steps to being energy efficient, using smart technology is the changing of your thermostat. The cost of energy, especially here in the northeast is so expensive; a wifi thermostat that will allow you to check the temperature from anywhere anytime is an easy and inexpensive as upgrade. Why not know what electrical devices are running in your home at anytime? Turn them off remotely from anywhere in the world? Left a light on in your home, get a full report of what is running and simply tap a button on your smartphone to turn the light off. Yes, THAT SIMPLE! The technology is here right now and it WILL NOT break the bank account!

Another example of technology that exists today, yet is affordable is for example; anytime someone comes to your front door and rings the door bell, or knocks on the door, an instant notification how would like for your system to immediately alert you, a picture is snapped, and sent to you in an instant. You in turn, simply tap a button and ask this person what they want from your smartphone! (yes speak to them from anywhere) Oh, it just the house keeper, instead of giving a key to this “trusting” whole house cleaning God/Goddess you instead, tap a button on your smartphone to open garage door!

YOUR OFFICE

Ever wonder what that particular sound was coming from your office HVAC system? It’s the sound of your banking account counting backwards as your office cools nobody, or the sound it makes when someone left six 100 watt lights on in the back of your office, ALL WEEKEND LONG! (and if figures, this was a 3 day weekend!) A simple scene set up in your office can automate the lights to be turned off at a set scheduled time, or you can simply turn off the lights with a tap of a button on your smartphone! A wonderful example of a staged scene that can easily be setup in your office or home would be to install a passive detector aimed at an obvious window that a would be burglar would consider an easy entry point, this passive detector detects motion. When the burglar comes up to the window – a scene unfolds; first the light in the hallway comes on, then 15 seconds later the light with the passive detector comes on. Then the front lights come on. I will bet – your burglar will look else where for a home where the people in the house are less aware! Send us your technology questions, we post your question and provide a solution! Send your questions to rob@imson.com

You Deserve the “BEST”

As a hearing healthcare professional for over 25 years, the most frequent question I get from patients is, “What’s the best hearing aid?” Most often they are looking for a specific brand name or specific model. Fortunately, there are a number of best hearing aids. The only correct answer is: the hearing aid recommended and provided by an exceptionally well skilled and dedicated hearing care professional after considering what best suits your needs, life-style and financial considerations. It’s usually not the answer the person is looking for, but it is the truth! People with hearing impairment need a highly skilled and caring professional who will go the extra mile to provide them with a solution that is custom tailored to their own unique hearing loss profile and life-style needs. In addition, look for a hearing care professional that sells more than one brand of hearing aid, as no one manufacturer has the best product for every hearing impaired person. This is one reason why Island Better Hearing dispenses every major manufacturer, making sure we fit you with the best hearing aid for you. We sell Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, Siemens, Unitron, Resound, Widex and Lyric. Let me give you some real-world examples why this is so important. My own father, and founder of Island Better Hearing, now wears the newest Widex hearing aids and hears significantly better with them than previous aides he has worn; and he has tried every new aid on the market. His hearing loss is like most people with ‘nerve” damage. Basically, he began to avoid soft-spoken people and all environments with noise. Today he is doing the best he has ever done. Another patient I have is a professional musician that tried numerous brands but ended up loving Phonak hearing aids as he felt that their tonal sound quality was best for music. He even brought his instrument in the test booth for additional testing and adjusting. There is no one brand of hearing aid that would have yielded the same results, as these individuals had different hearing requirements and unique hearing loss. A major difference in the service we provide concerns hearing aid benefit validation and verification. We do this testing after each fitting. We test the benefits both in the sound-proof test booth and using real-ear technologies. These services are not even offered by most dispensers. We offer them because you deserve the best. Recently the publishers of “The Hearing Review” initiated a “BEST OF 2011” Hearing Healthcare Professionals program to recognize the Audiologists who exemplify quality hearing care in the nation and who “go above and beyond” the call of duty to serve the needs of people with hearing impairment. I was chosen along with Island Better Hearing for this prestigious award as one of the best Audiologist and Practices in the nation! While we are humbled by the award, our A+ Rating as an Accredited Business with the Better Business Bureau speaks to our old fashioned way of doing business with integrity and trust. We have served Long Island for over 40 years and our main goal is how to fit you with the best hearing aid for you. Don’t you deserve the best?

Northport, NY - “Excitement at Northport” read a headline in the Long Islander on July 17, 1908. The excitement had been caused by the shooting of Dr. James W. Simpson by his mother-inlaw Mrs. Ellen Horner on the previous Monday afternoon. The trouble between the two dated back a year and a half to December when Simpson had shot his father-in-law dead. In both cases, there were two very different sides to the story. According to Simpson, the shooting death of Bartley T. Horner was an unfortunate accident. He was merely breaking his shotgun open to show the household chore boy how to clean it when it went off. He was as shocked as everyone else since he had earlier demonstrated to his wife that the gun was unloaded. However, after a series of hearings held in the Union Opera House, which was filled to more than capacity by interested neighbors, Justice Partridge ordered Simpson held for the grand jury. He was indicted, but at trial he was acquitted in spite of testimony

by both Mrs. Horner and his wife that he had made threats against his father-inlaw. The only eyewitness was the chore boy who refused to testify. Seven months after his acquittal, Simpson visited the Horner home not to reconcile with his wife, but to collect several hundred dollars he claimed to have given her for safekeeping while in jail awaiting trial. He did not succeed in recouping the money and later brought a lawsuit for that he claimed was owed to him. The following July, Simpson again arrived at the Horner residence, according to him, to discuss a divorce with his wife. When Mrs. Horner answered the doorbell, she asked without opening the door, “Who is there?” Simpson identified himself and stated that he wished to talk with his wife. Mrs. Horner then demanded that Simpson leave her property. When he persisted in his request, two shots were fired through the glass of the front door, one of which struck him in the left side severely wounding him. Mrs. Horner was arrested and charged with assault. The grand jury failed to indict her after her daughter, Mrs. Simpson, testified that while Simpson remained on the front porch talking through the door, his hand went to his pocket as if to draw a pistol. It was then that the shots were fired. Finally in the excitement of the previous five years came to an end when the jury hearing a suit brought by Simpson for in damages for assault accepted Mrs. Horner’s side of the story and denied him any compensation.

Bob Little is a long-time resident of the Northport area who greatly enjoys delving into the community’s fascinating history and writing his column for the Northport Historical Society.

O

n Mother’s Day, kids sometimes sneak into the kitchen to whip up a surprise breakfast for their moms. It’s always a treat to wake up to the smell of breakfast cooking - eggs, bacon and, of course, toast. And their smiles more than make up for the disaster zone normally left in the wake. It’s great to see how excited they are about cooking something special for Mom. You, and your family, can rest easy knowing you have made the kitchen as safe as possible for the experiments (and mountain of dishes) to come. Every month, check all of your appliance cords. An average of 3,600 home fires each year start with toasters and toaster ovens; it’s best not to take chances. It’s easy for a cord to get too close to the toaster or toaster oven and melt the wiring. Replace them at the first sign of damage. Install special outlets in the kitchen and bathrooms (anywhere near water, really) called ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). If a problem occurs - an appliance overheating or a wayward coffee maker tipping into the sink - power is shut off. A red TEST button helps remind you to check these outlets monthly. They’re the first line of defense. Even “cold” appliances pose a safety risk - refrigerators are responsible for about 1,000 fires annually. Every three months, take off the small panel at the base of the fridge and vacuum away dust

66 • village connection • may 2012

and debris. Not only does this prevent a fire, it makes a fridge more efficient. By getting the kids to help you, you teach them how to take care of their own kitchen some day. A third of all home fires start in the kitchen, but every room could hold potential danger. May isn’t only a time to honor mothers, it’s also National Electrical Safety Month. Please take the time this month to check your home for electrical hazards. Spending a few minutes to check for problems can make all the difference when you’re faced with a potentially unsafe situation. Pascal’s Wager Audi of Huntington

Sorrentino

While reading a book about investing, the author surprisingly referred to Pascal’s Wager, which concerns the wisdom of betting against the existence of God and heaven. Pascal, a 1600s French philosopher, mathematician and physicist posed an argument that can be summarized in the following decision matrix:

Wager for God

No God Oblivion

God exists Go to Heaven

Wager against God

Oblivion

Go to Hell

In a purely logical sense, believers who lose their bet end up in the same place after death as winning nonbelievers which is Oblivion – while believers who win, gain Heaven versus Hell for losing nonbelievers. Therefore Pascal reasons that wagering against God’s existence is a fool’s bet because of the devastating downside risk. The investment book uses this wager concept to describe long term stock-only investors as people who are betting against a market crash, and while they can achieve greater profits than properly diversified investors, stock-only investors risk financial ruin should the market crash. The investment book stresses that the goal of investing is not to maximize the chances of getting rich but rather to retire comfortably and minimize the odds of dying poor. Here’s an investor’s decision matrix:

Wager for Crash Wager against Crash

No Crash Moderate Profits Super Profits

Crash Wealth Preserved Financial Ruin

Recently a friend, who suddenly became ill, told me that the high cost of life-saving drugs would surely drain his savings. You see, several years ago, as a healthy 65 year old, he refused Medicare D prescription drug coverage to save the premium cost that he could well afford. He therefore wagered against contracting an illness that required expensive drugs and regrettably lost.

Wager for illness Wager against illness

No illness Status quo Status quo

Illness Savings Protected Savings Drained

Life finds us making decisions daily. However, when faced with one that can have harmful consequences - do as Pascal did - view it as a wager and weigh the outcomes to determine if it’s a fool’s bet.

BIG BENEFITS from a small patio When readers browse through popular home décor and lifestyle magazines in search of ideas for a backyard patio, they are usually teased with grandiose designs and sprawling outdoor spaces, which can be far from feasible due to their individual space requirements. With the exception of occasional articles that appear in do-it-yourself publications that can entail more construction skills and building time then bargained for, rarely will one find professional design concepts for a small patio without minimizing or even omitting some of the key elements that can turn a wish list into reality. However, a solution may lie within the grasp of homeowners with minimal back or side yard space and/or a limited budget, by turning to manufactured hardscape materials. The many inherent attributes and benefits connected with interlocking concrete pavers and segmental wallstones can add up to big benefits in a small patio footprint. Compare your project to designing a small indoor room such as a kitchen, den or bathroom. Approach your patio design with a similar strategy but realize that an outdoor space, regardless of its size, can be multi-functional. First, figure out what you would like to see in the space to make it as functional as possible given the space you have to work with in your design. Often, a larger impression can be achieved by utilizing materials that offer the most versatility. Use of larger sized pavers, certain pattern designs and a centrallyplaced inset of a circular or diamond-shaped pattern arrangement are ways to make a smaller space look bigger. Also placing the pavers diagonally can, depending on the configuration of the patio, result in a wider perception. When incorporating a refreshment bar or cooking area, consider “bumping out” these areas from the main patio configuration and surround these sections with garden beds or pathway approaches. For

on-demand casual seating, think about a perimeter seat wall or a bench seat notched into a wall system. There are several other components of a well-appointed outdoor living space that are available in scaled down versions, yet offer the same conveniences as larger equivalent items. In lieu of a big, straight or L-shaped outdoor kitchen, look into a smaller food preparation and cooking unit made of wallstones. If you have always wanted a fire pit and there isn’t any room for one in your allotted patio space, build one just off the patio itself where it will be accessible a few steps away but visible to family and friends on the patio. If you are still bewildered, consult a professional landscape contractor to help you plot your small patio space. With the help of specialized software, they can create realistic, computer-generated, full-color designs right before your eyes. This software will allow you to preview the area, before and after, illustrating your new patio with any wall system and outdoor living area in the actual colors and patterns of your choice and calculate real paver and wall requirements. You will need a digital photo of your back or side yard. If you are computer-savvy, you can also visit cambridgepavers.com, download the software, and create images on your own. Charles H. How Long Will It Take to Double My Money? Wealth Management Services, LLC

...Your Advisors For Life.

Financial Planning & Wealth Services :: Insurance Accounting & Tax

Before making any investment decision, one of the key elements you face is working out the real rate of return on your investment. Compound interest is critical to investment growth. Whether your financial portfolio consists solely of a deposit account at your local bank or a series of highly leveraged investments, your rate of return is dramatically improved by the compounding factor. With simple interest, interest is paid just on the principal. With compound interest, the return that you receive on your initial investment is automatically reinvested. In other words, you receive interest on the interest. But just how quickly does your money grow? The easiest way to work that out

is by using what’s known as the “Rule of 72.”1 Quite simply, the “Rule of 72” enables you to determine how long it will take for the money you’ve invested on a compound interest basis to double. You divide 72 by the interest rate to get the answer. For example, if you invest $10,000 at 10 percent compound interest, then the “Rule of 72” states that in 7.2 years you will have $20,000. You divide 72 by 10 percent to get the time it takes for your money to double. The “Rule of 72” is a rule of thumb that gives approximate results. It is most accurate for hypothetical rates between 5 and 20 percent. While compound interest is a great ally to an investor, inflation is one of the

greatest enemies. The “Rule of 72” can also highlight the damage that inflation can do to your money. Let’s say you decide not to invest your $10,000 but hide it under your mattress instead. Assuming an inflation rate of 4.5 percent, in 16 years your $10,000 will have lost half of its value. The real rate of return is the key to how quickly the value of your investment will grow. If you are receiving 10 percent interest on an investment but inflation is running at 4 percent, then your real rate of return is 6 percent. In such a scenario, it will take your money 12 years to double in value. The “Rule of 72” is a quick and easy way to determine the value of compound interest over time. By taking the real rate of return into consideration (nominal interest less inflation), you can see how soon a particular investment will double the value of your money. 1 The Rule of 72 is a mathematical concept, and the hypothetical return illustrated is not representative of a specific investment. Also note that the principal and yield of securities will fluctuate with changes in market conditions so that the shares, when sold, may be worth more or less than their original cost. The Rule of 72 does not include adjustments for income or taxation. It assumes that interest is compounded annually.Actual results will vary.

designer look • barbara simons

Shop Your Home or Clean the Slate? This is a real challenge for DIY’s and professional designers alike. Over the years I have found that most clients really want a fabulous new look, but are reticent about parting with many of their possessions. For example, items like your first dining room set elicit questions such as “Can’t we just refinish it? It was my very first set, and it’s still in perfect condition” (probably because the dining room rarely gets used!). The answer is yes, of course. However, and this is a big however, you will pay quite a bit to refinish, refurbish, re-glue and reupholster - probably more than you think. In the end it will be your old dining room set with a new, more current finish. But it’s still what was fashionable in 1986, which may be a dated design that was trendy then, but is no longer; that is putting good money after bad. Your dining room will never look like the dining room of your dreams if you take this approach. If you have exquisite antiques, there is always a way to work some of them into an eclectic design. However, if you want extreme ultra-minimalism, the complete

“Mediterranean” bedroom suite you own will need to move on to another owner. Do not expect to get back what you paid for it, either. Just because second hand furniture usually doesn’t sell for a great deal, that is no reason to keep it, especially if you are sick of looking at it, and it has no intrinsic monetary value. You will never love these things as much as a freshly designed space, which can be done within your budget parameters. Parting with “things,” whether furniture that has memories attached to it, or items that seem just too well made to throw away, can actually ruin the end look of a design, unless there is careful editing involved. Before the baby goes out with the bathwater, shop your home. Which items do not reflect your tastes any longer, and perhaps never did but were given by loved ones. Would those people want you to be unhappy? Of course not, so find a new good home for them. So many charities would love to have your furniture that’s in good condition. If you can’t give the stuff away, that’s telling you something, right?

As you shop your home, see whether you could move beautiful chairs, rugs or decorative items to a new location. Quite often, a change of scenery for a really good old lamp will give it new life in another room with a great lampshade. If you use this approach, you will often find some really lovely things that were hidden or underutilized in their old locations and can get a new life in a different room with only minor modification. You probably have some cool stuff, but you need to be a tiny bit ruthless, so let a friend with great taste help you. Better yet, hire a designer to edit your home objectively. Even in one day a professional can help you shop your home, tell you what needs to be kept, moved or tweaked, and what should go bye-bye in order for you get a fresh and exciting new look. What’s Cookin’ Mom? Have you considered growing some fresh herbs in your garden or even in a container on your patio? Parsley, chives, basil, dill and bay leaf were some of my mom’s favorites and she would use them quite frequently in many dishes. We always tried to have some of these herbs around to add to a soup recipe or special dish that she would prepare on a Sunday afternoon. I will always remember picking the bay leaf out of the potato soup that she would make in the wintertime. I can still picture my grandmother or my mom tying up the parsley with string as they prepared to place it in the pot with all the vegetables, giving flavor to the beef soup. Often they would freeze what was not used for a later time. Spices such as paprika were used often in our household since we are from a Hungarian heritage on my mom’s side of the family. Both of my grandparents were born in Hungary. One of my favorite side dishes was a simple

cucumber salad. Chopping up the dill and adding it in with the sliced cucumber, sour cream, vinegar & onion was always a refreshing treat. The fresh smell of cucumber & dill was hard to beat. How about adding some lemon balm & fresh mint to your iced tea? You can savor the flavor in so many ways with fresh herbs. It’s a cinch with just a pinch of whatever may be your favorite. Rosemary, thyme, oregano and cilantro all have strong flavors that should be used more subtly as flavor enhancers. Lavender is great for aromatherapy since it has a soothing, calming effect. It is great for ornamental uses as well in the landscape with its outstanding display of lavender flowers. Be aware that mint can be

very invasive and is best if planted in a container. With the arrival of Mother’s Day this month there are so many ways to remember mom. I’m sure we all have special childhood memories of the delicious aroma of our mom’s cooking in the kitchen right up to today. If she is still alive and living nearby t h e n maybe you can cook a meal for her on Mother’s Day; unless you’re taking her out to eat of course. Perhaps she lives far away where you can write her a note about a special recipe you remember her cooking. I’m sure it will put a big smile on her face and maybe even bring a tear of joy. If your mom has passed on then possibly make a meal in her honor to celebrate her life. You could even start a tradition by preparing something together as a family that was special to you when your own mom made it for the family. There may be a favorite recipe that she passed along to you which you can share with family and friends. A special treat for anyone should be a visit to the Peconic River Herb Farm in Calverton. It is a magical place along the Peconic River where you can buy many fresh herbs, perennials, annuals and shrubs. You can get some great ideas for planting your own herb garden while you’re there. They have a nice selection of native plants as well and their staff can offer great advice for all your gardening or landscaping needs. The barn is filled with all kinds of goodies from soup to nuts and more. Stroll through the well- planned display gardens throughout the grounds or relax in the shade listening to the quiet. You might want to pack a picnic lunch and head out to the wine country from there! Cheers and bon appétit!

Plenty of Pizza

T

here’s no shortage of dining in Huntington Village. No matter what your appetite or the time of day, Huntington’s restaurants can satisfy any craving. Nevertheless, when time is short or you just want something easy, pizza is always a solid choice. As simple as pizza is - dough, sauce, and cheese - you can’t just go anywhere for a slice. My favorite for plain cheese is Little Vincent’s on New York Avenue. I get mine crispy and when I am feeling bold, I ask for a topping of cold cheese. Little Vincent is known for its late night crowd and will satisfy anyone’s “after drinks” appetite. If you’re after a specialty slice like a chicken tomato, broccoli cheddar, or buffalo you best head over to Rosa’s Pizza and Pasta on the corner of Main Street and Clinton Avenue. Their specialty combinations are plenty, so don’t get overwhelmed. Don’t forget to add a garlic knot to your order. They are the best at Rosa’s. Just north of the village on Wall Street is DiRaimo’s Pizza. DiRaimo’s cheese slices are known for the amazing homemade sauce with the perfect combination of seasoning. Similar to Rosa’s, DiRaimo’s makes an outstanding selection of specialty slices. My favorites are their eggplant rollatini and ravioli slices. DiRaimo’s also makes superb potato crochets. Prepared and cooked alongside the pizza, they are always crisp and flavorful! If you’re looking for convenience, Junior’s Pizza has 2 locations; in Halesite on New York Avenue and on Wall Street between Main and Gerard. I go to Junior’s for their thick Sicilian and thin crust grandma with basil slices. For more traditional and filling Italian delights, Junior’s on Wall Street is connected to Almarcos just next door. On the corner of New York Avenue and West Carver Street is Huntington’s newest pizza parlor, Porto Fino’s Ristorante. The new kid on the block is beautifully renovated with an open kitchen and windows bordering the entire corner. I was blown away by their stuffed pizza. Packed with various combinations, one slice is all you need. My favorites are the vegetable and sausage and peppers.

82 • village connection • may 2012

Porto Fino is much more than just a pizza shop. Just past the display case is their full service restaurant. For a casual Italian experiences, Porto Fino’s Ristorante is a go-to. When you’re in Northport, Nina’s Pizza on Main Street and Laurel Avenue offers more than just your average corner pizza shop. After a day spent in Asharoken or at Crab Meadow Beach, experience al fresco dining and amazing sangria with any of Nina’s astounding specialties. With the upcoming warm weather, let Nina’s be your Northport destination. As I mention the establishments above, please don’t get me wrong. I am an equal opportunity pizza lover. Although I cannot mention all of my favorite pizza shops, when I am in the mood for a specific type of slice, I no doubt have a local favorite in mind. Paesano Pizzeria on East Main St in Huntington - Chicken Bacon Bomber Sicilian Slice Jimmy’s of Centerport/Greenlawn/Northport - Greek Salad and Spinach Slices Broadway Pizza in Greenlawn - Southwest Chicken and Chicken Ranch Slices Johnny D’s Pizza in Huntington Station - Sausage & Pepperoni La Porta Pizza in Northport - Perfect if you come to Northport Village by boat. Everyone has their favorite pizza parlor and each has their own respective specialties. No matter what type of ‘za you’re in the mood for, Huntington has plenty of choices for you.

@LIComedyFest Real estate agents are now putting their pictures on the FOR SALE signs outside the homes. Are people thinking, “Wow, that real estate agent is hot! Maybe I’ll buy that house.” I was watching the news. What does it mean when they say “Here are some of the stories we’re working on?” What are they working on? It’s the news. Just report it. Are they making $#%@ up? I saw a truck for a cesspool company. On the back it read: ‘We’re number ONE at picking up number TWO’. Same day I saw a truck for a port a potty company. That one read: ‘You MAKE it, we TAKE it’. Is this really necessary? Weddings are getting expensive. People are looking to save money. I just received an invitation to a wedding on a Monday afternoon. How much larger are men’s watches going to get? Seriously. My left arm is now two inches longer than my right. At my gym while you work out they have TV sets all over the place… showing infomercials of other people working out. I’ve been seeing a lot of advertising for replacing missing teeth. Apparently on Long Island the toothless population is on the rise.

a balmy spring evening, while cherry blossoms floated on a gentle breeze, more than 300 people arrived at Coe Hall in Oyster Bay to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit for the season called Cocktail Culture, the Glamorous Gold Coast Years from Prohibition to 1960. The sold out Gala featured live Cole Porter music, hor d’oevres, and best of all, cocktails from the 1920’s through the 1960’s including classics like the Old Fashioned, Pink Lady, Planters Punch, Banana Daiquiri and French 75. Guests, some dressed in outfits from the era, mingled in the great hall, where they admired the exciting new exhibit which includes nearly 100 dresses, handbags, shoes and other accessories on loan from Jimmy Raye, a private collector, as well as 40 objects either purchased for the exhibit or drawn from the foundation archives. Period clothes included such famous designers as Chanel, Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Salvatore Ferragamo, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Mary Quant. The exhibit is the brain child of Henry Joyce, the Executive Director of the Planting Fields Foundation. Joyce should really be called Henry Higgins; since his arrival three years ago the house has undergone a major transformation, turning it from a shuttered mansion into a showplace for glittering parties, with Coe Hall being his Pygmalion. He has breathed new life into a mansion that was on life support. Each year the parties get bigger and better giving Newport, Rhode Island a run for its money. Joyce, an Englishman, feels a great kinship toward the house. “I am inspired by the house and its history - from 1920 when it was first lived in, to 1960 which is the great era of cocktails. It seemed natural to do Cocktail Culture from 1920 to 1960. The history of prohibition on Long Island is really fascinating, so that was another reason to do it, as well as to show fabulous clothes from that period.” It took eight months to plan the exhibit which runs until September 30. As guests roamed through the enormous mansion, they also

received a history lesson in the prohibition era and learned that Mr. Coe was stockpiling liquor in the years leading up to Prohibition. During that time it was legal to consume liquor in your private residence but illegal to transport it, which is why rum running became such a common occupation across Long Island. In the house there is a 700 square foot secret storage basement and a hidden bar in his den which guests can view during the tour. This exciting exhibit is open to the public daily from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm at Coe Hall, Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, 1395 Planting Fields Road, Oyster Bay, New York. Coe Hall admission is $3.50 and children under 12 are free. Planting Fields parking is $8. plantingfields.org ( 516) 922-8600. Holders of Empire Passes are admitted free to the grounds and have free parking. This wonderful exhibit is not to be missed.

Dr. Cynthia Paulis, a medical correspondent and international lecturer, is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Family Practice. A native of Long Island she spent four years as Lt. Commander with the USPHS working with Native Americans in Oklahoma and 18 years working border towns in Texas before returning to NY. She was a medical correspondent for CBS in Texas. wine speak • laurie maniatis MOMMY NEEDS A

Time Out Wine

May brings so many lovely things to the forefront. We all share a love of mild weather; food prepared on the grill; Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. In honor of Mother’s Day, I want to discuss the huge marketing dollars targeting the 77% of women who do the wine shopping. There are many blogs and Facebook sites devoted to this very topic. Some I know of are “Moms Who Need Wine,” and “OMG I so need a glass of wine.” These popular sites serve as a virtual mother’s group where moms with a sense of humor vent about day-to-day parenting issues over a glass or two of wine as the evening approaches. One recent entry said, "It's probably going to be a long summer when you look at a bottle of wine & think about making homemade popsicles with it."

Mothers who have a glass or two after putting the kids to bed are not a new phenomenon. One of the major companies that directly advertise to this group is Mommy Juice. Mommy Juice founder Durzy proclaims; “Wine has been used to relax and unwind, and no one deserves that more than a mom.” “It also says clearly on the label the importance of moderation.” Durzy continued, "People have been marketing to men for years. If it's ok to target Dad with advertising beer or scotch after work but not Mom, that kind of screams sexism to me." So let’s raise a glass in honor of moms and enjoy MAY! Laurie Maniatis is a lifetime Huntington resident who has worked in the wine and spirits industry for 36 years. She was one of the first women to be hired as a sales manager for a large distributor in Metro NY. She says teaching people about wines is more that a job; it’s a passion.

“Very Good...filet mignon was super tender...with a splendid bearnaise... succulent pork porterhouse...” JOANNE STARKEY

The mysterious, yet famous “phantom brewery” Evil Twin Brewing definitely will open your eyes to the world of craft beer. Evil Twin Brewing is the brainchild of Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø. An avid beer geek since 1997, Jeppe began home-brewing in Copenhagen, Denmark in June ’03. His first foray into the commercial craft beer scene commenced in September ’05, when he opened the now worldfamous bottle shop Ølbutikken in Copenhagen. The reputation of Jeppe & his shop grew quickly, and myriad side projects began. Evil Twin Brewing is the culmination of the vast knowledge, experiences, and relationships he’s built over the years. Evil Twin Brewery is the definition of a Gypsy Brewer. They don’t even have a website (yet), but that doesn’t stop fans of their beer from chatting up their experiences. Their Facebook fan page, Facebook group, and Twitter account all are used to continue fan discussion and appreciation. This is just one of more than 2,000 brands of beer in stock at Shoreline Beverage
