Summer In The Village Summer’s here and it’s time to get out and enjoy all that the villages of Huntington have to offer at this time of year. June 25th marks the opening night for the 46th Annual Summer Arts Festival, presented by the Huntington Arts Council. Enjoy live entertainment at Heckscher Park six nights a week throughout the summer. All performances are free and held at the Chapin Rainbow Stage beginning at 8:30 pm all nights but Monday. From Jazz to a Hispanic Dance Festival and live theater, there is something for every member of the family to enjoy including a special tribute to Huntington’s own Harry Chapin on July 16. There are also free concerts at the Northport Village Gazebo as well as live entertainment at venues all over town. You’ll find the complete schedule in this issue of Summer in the Village. Boating weather also means the return of Huntington Lighthouse Tours with dates still available on July 10 & 24, August 7 & 21 and September 18 & 25. Find out more at huntingtonlighthouse.org. Wednesday 7/6 Huntington Community Band Tonight’s “AN AMERICAN TRIBUTE” will include the Huntington Women’s Choir in a program honoring America and our veterans. There will be a stirring rendition of “The Battle Hymn of The Republic,” an inspirational evening and celebrate our great nation. THursday 7/7 Huntington Choral society Since 1962, The Huntington Choral Society has been entertaining the Long Island community with the great choral works of the world. Tonight’s program will include excerpts from Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess. Friday 7/8 Theophilus London An alternative rap artist from Brooklyn, NY, Theophilus London has a genre-bending approach draws from a range of styles, from soul-pop and post-punk to electro and contemporary R&B. saTurday 7/16 “Harry Chapin: a Celebration in song,” July 16 will mark 30 years since an automobile crash on the Long Island Expressway took the life of singer, songwriter and social activist Harry Chapin. Two generations of Chapins – Harry’s daughter Jen, his brothers Tom and Steve, the Chapin Sisters and others, will gather to honor that anniversary and Harry’s life, music and legacy. This family reunion concert is collaboration among the Huntington Arts Council, the Town of Huntington, Long Island Cares and the Folk Music Society of Huntington. Songs include “What I Did for Love,” “At the Ballet,” and “One.” TueSday 8/9 Teatro Sea- Ricitos and the Three Bears Super nosey Ricitos (Goldilocks) leads audiences on a Latinized adventure in this bi-lingual version of the classic fairy tale. HISTORIC HUNTINGTON continued from page 30

The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building was completed in 1892 as a memorial to the 40 townsmen who died in the Civil War. The idea for a memorial was first proposed in 1865. Huntington’s leading citizens joined together to create The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Association in 1886 and fund raising efforts finally bore fruit when the building was completed in 1892. The building is the first of several monumental civic structures built in Huntington in the two decades surrounding the turn of the twentieth century. The Memorial Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and as part of Old Town Hall National Register Historic District. Northport Historical Society Museum Exhibits History Through Scrapbooks

The Northport Historical Society plays a vital role in the preservation and presentation of the community’s historically rich heritage. The final piece of the exhibit is an informal poll, allowing visitors to express their own view of today’s whaling controversies.

See The Treasures Of Greenlawn & Centerport The Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association is an organization with a mission to research, collect, record and preserve the history of the communities of Greenlawn and Centerport. Today the Association’s Russell B. Brush Research Center includes hundreds of photographs, documents, written histories and genealogical information relating to Greenlawn and Centerport. In 1989, the Association purchased the Suydam Homestead, located at the corner of Route 25A and Centerport Road. This c1730 house was occupied by members of the Suydam family from the late 18th century until 1957. The Historical Association has repaired the West Wing and converted it into a gallery that now displays the many historical artifacts discovered on the site. Another feature added to the property is a non-historic barn built in 1991 to house and display the Association’s vast collection of furniture, farm tools, wagons, clothing and household objects, most donated by local Greenlawn and Centerport families.

“Time Travel”

A Whole New Meaning

The Huntington Historical Society’s Passport to the Past summer program is an exciting step back into time for children ages 7 to 12. Each session runs for two weeks, each weekday from 9:30 am to noon. This program is designed to make history interesting as well as fun. Trained counselors, often dressed in period costumes, lead children on an exciting adventure where the crafts, games and everyday experiences enjoyed by children of the Colonial and Victorian eras come alive. All activities take place in the historic Kissam

Barn and children also have the opportunity to tour the interior of the Dr. Daniel W. Kissam house, built in 1795. An old fashioned snack and drink will be provided daily; something cooked over an open fire for authenticity. Also the new Bee-hive oven is used to bake bread the way it was done by the Kissam family. There are three Passport to the Past sessions each summer.
