HISTORIC HUNTINGTON continued from page 30
The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building was completed in 1892 as a memorial to the 40 townsmen who died in the Civil War. The idea for a memorial was first proposed in 1865. Huntington’s leading citizens joined together to create The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Association in 1886 and fund raising efforts finally bore fruit when the building was completed in 1892. The building is the first of several monumental civic structures built in Huntington in the two decades surrounding the turn of the twentieth century. The Memorial Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and as part of Old Town Hall National Register Historic District. Open to visitors and located at 228 Main Street, Huntington. For more information call 631- 427-7045, Ext. 401, huntingtonhistoricalsociety.org.

Cold Spring Harbor History Up Close The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum collects, preserves, and exhibits objects and documents pertinent to whaling, especially the regional whaling history of Long Island, whale conservation, and the history of Cold Spring Harbor as a maritime port.
Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum
Now on Exhibit:
“New Exhibit: From Prey to Protection” This special exhibition explores the recent history of whaling and looks into some of the events which helped to bring about this complete turnabout in public attitude. It brings together artifacts, historic film, and audio and graphic elements to not only tell the story, but also to illustrate how much of what we hear and see today is designed to persuade us to particular points of view. The final piece of the exhibit is an informal poll, allowing visitors to express their own view of today’s whaling controversies.
Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum is located on Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor. Open 11am-5pm, Tuesday-Sunday; Open holiday Mondays. For information call 631-367-3418 or visit cshwhalingmuseum.org.

HISTORIC GReenlawn
See The Treasures Of Greenlawn & Centerport The Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association is an organization with a mission to research, collect, record and preserve the history of the communities of Greenlawn and Centerport. Today the Association’s Russell B. Brush Research Center includes hundreds of photographs, documents, written histories and genealogical information relating to Greenlawn and Centerport. In 1989, the Association purchased the Suydam Homestead, located at the corner of Route 25A and Centerport Road. This c1730 house was occupied by members of the Suydam family from the late 18th century until 1957. The Historical Association has repaired the West Wing and converted it into a gallery that now displays the many historical artifacts discovered on the site. Another feature added to the property is a non-historic barn built in 1991 to house and display the Association’s vast collection of furniture, farm tools, wagons, clothing and household objects, most donated by local Greenlawn and Centerport families.
Suydam Homestead is located at 1 Fort Salonga Rd., Centerport (corner of Centerport Rd. & 25A) Open to the Public June to Mid October Sundays, 1pm-4pm. Russell B. Brush Research Center is located in The Harborfields Public Library, 31 Broadway, Greenlawn, 631-754-1180. Open Monday-Thursday 9am-1pm, Friday 10am-1pm & by Appointment. www.gcha.info.

“Time Travel”
A Whole New Meaning
The Huntington Historical Society’s Passport to the Past summer program is an exciting step back into time for children ages 7 to 12. Each session runs for two weeks, each weekday from 9:30 am to noon. This program is designed to make history interesting as well as fun. Trained counselors, often dressed in period costumes, lead children on an exciting adventure where the crafts, games and everyday experiences enjoyed by children of the Colonial and Victorian eras come alive. All activities take place in the historic Kissam
Barn and children also have the opportunity to tour the interior of the Dr. Daniel W. Kissam house, built in 1795. An old fashioned snack and drink will be provided daily; something cooked over an open fire for authenticity. Also the new Bee-hive oven is used to bake bread the way it was done by the Kissam family. There are three Passport to the Past sessions each summer. For the schedule visit huntingtonhistoricalsociety.org, or call 427-7045, Ext. 401.

Huntington Toyota Excels At Customer Service Servicing our vehicle is not usually the number one thing on our “to-do” list. We know that it’s something that we should do, and we usually have good intentions, but the inconvenience is often behind the delay. Studies show that nationally 50% of customers who purchase their car at a new car local dealer don’t have their car serviced at that dealer, and only 21% take advantage of the first time service. At Huntington Toyota, they’ve found the formula to make their customers want to come in to get their vehicles serviced. With a truly unique menu of complimentary services available, they may even look forward to it. “It’s all about customer service, and making sure the customer does not feel the pain of the process of getting their vehicle serviced.” said General Manager Lenny Cafarelli To start with, Huntington Toyota gives their customers options. Call ahead and schedule a service loaner, arrange for transportation home from a professional shuttle service, or, if you live within 10 miles of the dealership, they will even come pick up your car and return it to you when it’s done. If you make your appointment online, you will receive a discount on your service. While many dealers may offer transportation, Huntington Toyota goes beyond. How does a complimentary chair massage with aromatherapy sound? Or maybe you prefer to drop your kids in the children’s room where they can watch the latest movies while you enjoy a continental breakfast and catch up on work using their wireless connection. Maybe you would prefer to receive a complimentary manicure while you wait. “Time is the second most important thing to our customers, other than their children.” General Manager Lenny Cafarelli explains, “At Huntington Toyota we offer these services so that they can spend more time with their families by allowing them to get other tasks done while their car is
being serviced.” Always looking to take customer service to the extreme, their most recent announcement is completely unheard of in the automotive industry. As of June 1, all work done at Huntington Toyota, exclusive of regular maintenance, is now covered by a lifetime, 100% guarantee for parts and service. Yes, that’s all work for life. That means if you bring your car in to replace your battery, if your battery ever needs replacing again, it’s free; the parts and service. Forever. These are just a few of the ways that Huntington Toyota has created its own brand of customer service. Visit their website, toyotaofhuntington.com, or stop in to visit to find out more about these services and the equally impressive list of courtesies extended by their sales department. – Jeanne Murphy
