From the Publisher What a Difference a Day Makes… A Week… A Month… A Year… Actually Two Years It’s hard to believe all the events that have taken place since January 1, 2015. The year started with what was suppose to be a joyous occasion. After making the decision to bring my business focus back to the town of Huntington, I was proudly moving into my new location in the heart of the Village, ready to reclaim my territory and conquer the world. Life had other plans. In February of 2015, we received the tragic news of my nephew Frankie’s passing. He wasn’t just my nephew; he was like a son to me. The grief that followed was unbearable for me as well as my associate publisher, Jeanne Murphy, my right arm, my sister, and Frankie’s mom. And also for my daughter, Nicole Savalli, the creative designer of my company, who lost a cousin that was a brother and best friend to her. As we are a family-run business, my magazine hit a standstill and quite frankly, it was warranted. As we so desperately tried to move on, I was also preparing for my opening party with my new office mate, photographer Lenny Marks. I started to notice that I wasn’t as functional as normal but just brushed it off as nerves. We eagerly looked forward to the three-day party of friends, relatives and business associates joining together to celebrate a new beginning for my business. It was then that I was notified by my doctor, literally at my party, that I would need a major surgery immediately or I could be paralyzed for the rest of my life. Surgery was scheduled for the following week. Not really the best timing for me considering I was also in the middle of building a radio station. I did think to myself though, at least on radio people won’t be able to see my pain and suffering. “Yes! No one will be able to see my weakness on the radio!” Trying to stay on a positive note, I tried to convince myself that three months recovery wouldn’t be that bad. Well, three months turned into over a year of still feeling extreme pain and still not being able to walk very well. The solution was another, more serious surgery that took place a few weeks ago. Now, a scheduled 3-hour operation that wound up taking 7 hours has left me in excruciating pain, unable to walk at all. The back surgery that I had will require me to deal with a long recovery process but I will recover and will never be defeated! So, here I am now. Ready to go forward! With a little help

from my friends and plans in place to readjust how I work, I’m back with a vengeance. My desire to create a magazine that showcases the town of Huntington is greater than ever. And now that you’ve heard my woes, I want you to listen to my motivation. Under the circumstances things had to change, one of which is my physical location. My new studio is located right in the town of Huntington Village which is now at 11 Lake Place, Huntington, NY 11743. I would love to have people come visit in order to see the unbelievable things that can now be done. We’ve stepped it up quite a few notches and I’m eager to show it all off. From radio to television and from print to digital, and just about everything in between, we have it or we’re making it. Although I don’t often share my personal life in the publisher’s letter, I’m just like everyone else. Life knocks us all down sometimes, but we get up and we do the best we can to move on and come back even stronger. My intent with this letter is to reconnect with all of you and let you know just where I’ve been and where I’m going. And since I’m sharing, I’d also like to let you in on some better news. In the midst of all of the events taking place the last couple of years, I also proposed to the love of my life, Jennifer Riccoboni, and was married on August 9th 2015 right here in Huntington. Our next goal was to immediately start a family together. Six months after our wedding, we were blessed with the news of our pregnancy, something that we thought could never be possible before meeting each other. A true miracle. We’re looking forward to welcoming a new life into our family in just a few months. So, now you might understand my mission and determination. If you’d like to find out more about what we are doing or want to come visit the office, email me at villageconnection@live.com. In the meantime, I’ll see you in the Village.

Tedeschi the Traveler Be the Change

“Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference. And we have a choice: What sort of difference do we want to make? -Jane Goodall A few facts about Tanzania: Capital: Dodoma Language: Swahili/English Currency: Tanzanian Shilling Population: 49.25 million Drives on the: Left President: John Magufuli I recently returned from a journey in Tanzania. I was stationed in a camp in Engotukoit which is located about one hour outside of Arusha. On one side of my camp I had the view of Mount Kilamanjaro and in the opposite direction Mount Meru. Settling into the camp was a simple task and in true Camille fashion something crazy had to happen to start my adventure. The first guest in my tent was a scorpion. Oh yes, an actual scorpion with its tail curled up ready to attack. Thank goodness I had a fearless

facilitator who came to my rescue by killing it and burning it. Once this situation was a thing of the past my trip ran smoothly. I traveled with nine students and one additional adult. The trip was a service learning trip affiliated with Free the Children, Me to We and EF Tours. The focus of the trip was to work in a local community on a specific project connected to education. My group was assigned the task of renovating classrooms and getting them ready for the students of the area. The tasks included sanding, painting, moving furniture, digging holes and engaging with the teachers and students. None of the days at the school felt like work. We had so much fun listening to music and dancing while laughing and smiling the whole time. Meeting new people and being immersed in a new culture is refreshing. It allows for personal growth and an eyewitness account of the world around us. Kids are kids everywhere. As a teacher I can spot the child who loves to do his/her homework, the child who

dislikes sitting for an extended period of time and the child who just wants to be loved. The children in the community are just like the children I teach in my local community. The students ranged from first grade up to seventh grade and they all took an interest in each other. They had the most beautiful smiles and faces and loved interacting with my group of students. Each day one of my favorite activities was to just sit back and watch the students play together. One of my favorite scenes involved my student engaged in a language lesson swapping English words for Swahili words with a group of boys while the larger part of my group played in a soccer game. The trip itinerary was full of excitement in addition to the work we had to complete. Before being at the camp and the school I thought the best day was going to be the day we went on safari, but now that the trip is over that is the last thing I think about as I reflect on my experience. We engaged in Swahili language lessons with two Maasai warriors who were our teachers, local guides and by the time we had to leave they were a part of my travel family. These two men might have been two of the most interesting people I have ever met and I know that my students would agree. The way they interacted with my students and myself was precious. The tears flowing down my face the morning we had to leave and the night before we had to leave were a sign of how much I enjoyed them and did not want our time together to come to an end or as one of them would say, “The time is no longer with us.” Another activity that impacted my group was the water walk. We had the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of a local mama

to a nearby water source to collect water for her family. This moment allowed all of us to understand the challenges faced my many in accessing clean water. By walking in somebody else’s shoes it allows you to open your mind. I know that day changed all of our lives as we gained a deeper sense of how fortunate our lives are at home. Each day all of us were so happy and in awe of what we did the day before. Everyday was an amazing day.. Saturday is market day and we were able to become locals by going to the market and purchasing needed items to survive. I walked around in a small group and some of the items I purchased included corn, bananas, rope and avocados. Another fun activity was beading with Maasai Mamas. We had the chance to work with local mamas beading and singing while we worked. Beading is not easy, but it is a traditional skill that my group was able to embrace. Our facilitator told us that he never saw a group bead as much as we did and believe it or not the kids were still beading on the plane ride home! I walked to the back of the plane to see them using their barf bags to hold the beads as they were making more necklaces and bracelets. What makes you different is what makes you beautiful. Every person has the ability to make a change in this world, but not all people do. This trip to east Africa brought about many changes to our personal lives, the lives of the people we met in Tanzania and the lives of our family and friends at home who experienced what we did from our memories by listening to our stories, watching our videos and viewing our photographs. Change is defined as becoming different and I know each of us returned home a changed person and for that I am grateful.

BOYCE AVENUE Live at the Paramount

One of the biggest independent bands in the world, Boyce Avenue is a Florida-based band that consists of three brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano. The brothers first came together as a band in 2004 when Alejandro (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Fabian (guitar, vocals), and their older brother Daniel (bass, percussion, vocals) reconnected after Daniel graduated from Harvard Law School and moved back to Florida where Fabian and Alejandro were both attending classes at the University of Florida. It was there that the brothers started to play together, write music and start the formative steps toward becoming a Boyce Avenue. In 2007, in an effort to share their music and ideas with the world, the band decided to start filming and posting videos on YouTube of them performing their own songs as well as some of their favorite songs by other popular artists. The videos began to resonate instantly with YouTube viewers and to date the band’s YouTube channel has amassed over 2.1 Billion views and over 7.5 Million subscribers making them the biggest independent band on the network (ranked by subscribers above artists like Shakira, Ed Sheeran, Pitbull and Lady Gaga). The band has also amassed over 500,000 Twitter followers and almost 3 million Facebook subscribers, forging a lasting and passionate digital fan base that have followed the band’s every move for years. In 2010, the band released their major label debut album, All We Have Left, through Universal Republic Records, featuring the single “Every Breath”. However it quickly became apparent that the major label system didn’t yet understand a unique band like Boyce Avenue and the band elected to buy back their album and release it themselves directly to their rabid fans. Since then the band has

released all their music through their wholly owned 3 Peace Records and have sold in excess of 10 Million singles and 500 Million streams to date, making them one of the most successful independent labels in the world. Not content to simply interact with their fans in the digital world, Boyce Avenue has found tremendous success as a live touring band throughout their career and have sold over 500,000 tickets in 25 countries and 5 continents to date (including the United States, Canada, Australia, Asia, Brazil, Europe and the United Kingdom). Now Boyce Avenue is beyond excited to be releasing their new full length original album Road Less Traveled in early 2016, featuring the single Be Somebody that was produced by the Espionage production team (Beyonce – Irreplaceable, Train – Hey Soul Sister and others) and mixed by Mark Endert (Maroon 5, Gavin Degraw, Sara Bareilles). Boyce Avenue will be touring globally in 2016 to support the album release including confirmed shows in the United States, Canada, the UK, Europe, India, SE Asia, Brazil and Australia. RIPE Art Gallery brings the latest work by Gary Kroman to LI! Opening on Saturday, August 6, 2016, 6-9pm

A New York City native, Gary Kroman began working independently as a freelance illustrator in 1972. In 1973 he met with the people at Relix magazine and began illustrating for the magazine. Inspired by Rick Griffin, Kelly and Mouse and most of the San Francisco comic and poster artists of the late sixties and early seventies he created volumes of posters, magazine covers, album cover art and tee shirts. His posters, most notably the 100 Grateful Dead Songs, Sunshine Daydream, Summer of Love 20th year anniversary and Dead Serenade are licensed and sold to various companies in many categories and are still traded and sold all over the world to this day. After more than 30 years of doing traditional painting and drawing techniques he realized it was getting old and he wanted to experiment with new techniques. Everything seemed so flat. He saw some glass paintings and liked the “floating” aspect of an image seeming to be hanging in space. He has started working with plexiglass, and currently his subject matter is celebrity and what that persona means. The art makes a statement about the particular person. Every new piece goes

a little further to enhance the “hanging in space” dimensional view. He has shown most recently at the J. B. Kline Gallery in Lambertville, N.J. and was spotlighted at the Hard Rock Vault’s 30 Years of Grateful Dead Art exhibition at their gallery in Orlando, FL as well as been involved in higher end rock and roll auction houses such as Guernsey’s 40 Years Of Rock and Roll. He is well published and is featured in the Paul Grushkin book “The Art Of Rock” Vol. 1. RIPE Art Gallery is committed to presenting new, cutting edge and challenging art, showcasing underrepresented as well as seasoned artists. Established in the spring of 2004, the mission of RIPE Art Gallery is to inspire, excite and offer original works of art to a new, non-traditional collector base, at the same time creating an accessible and engaging gallery space. RIPE Art Gallery is also a Custom Picture Frame shop, priding ourselves on providing high quality custom framing with unique designs, and expert craftsmanship. Our selection of frames is unrivaled, spanning from traditional designs to the bizarre, and nontraditional framing options.

CREATE A MODERN-DAY MOSAIC WITH NEW AND BROADER PAVER CHOICES

C

onstantin Brâncuși (1876 – 1957), Romanian sculptor, painter and photographer, is considered a pioneer of modernism, and one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th-century. Brâncuși was once quoted as saying: “Architecture is inhabited sculpture.” Which brings me to the topic at hand — What makes today’s pavers something other than what you may have perceived?

In retrospective (but not that far back), an interlocking concrete pavement driveway, patio or walkway was an installation of one ore more concrete paver shapes laid within a pattern or randomly positioned with a matching or contrasting border. These similarities soon changed as landscape architects, designers and contractors envisioned interspersing additional colors and other enhancements such as circle and fan patterns to embellish the paved areas. For believers with a more creative bent, it still left limited ability for creative expression. As more interior lifestyles transcended into outdoor spaces, consumer demands changed and to some degree, turned mind-sets inside out. Concrete paver manufacturers like Cambridge — makers of pavingstones with ArmorTec® — heard their pleas and offered what is now a array of paver products that are designed to cohabit and appeal to primary appetites for individuality much like an art form. New offerings from Cambridge are available in a myriad of natural textures, scale and configurations in surprising, out-of-the-box colors and fashionable tones. So what does all this mean to you, the homeowner? Motifs in a compatible thicknesses range from classically traditional to perky ultra-modern. Surfaces can vary from quarried natural stone

to having resemblances of hi-end interior floors. Solo installations or mixed patterns are your preference. Here are four up-and-coming and popular paver interpretations: • Cambridge Nor Stone 4-Pc. Design Kit — Four smooth-surfaced, elongated shapes with chamfered edges that deliver linear, neo-modern yet classic results. • Cambridge Timber Stone 4-Pc. Design Kit — The much-coveted attraction of indoor hardwood flooring is captured in this plank-style concrete paver foursome. • Cambridge Natural Stone 7-Pc. Pattern Design Kit — Create idyllic, multi-dimensional appeal outdoors with these scaled-up seven paver shapes cut from reclaimed stone. • Cambridge Travertine 4-Pc. French Pattern Design Kit — Repurposed, this revered, finished form of limestone is carefully honed and tumbled for outdoor living. Also consider incorporating River Rock, a free-style array of shapes with old world charm; slender Brick Alley Cast Stone with handcrafted character; and randomly placed XL Smooth. According to info.houzz.com — a website platform dealing with architecture, interior and landscape design and home improvement — homeowners prioritize outdoor living, ease of maintenance and beauty in crafting outdoor spaces. Current manufactured pavement products and related, natural materials repurposed in paver form can address all three main concerns and stimulate you to “play outside” with creative ideas. Landscape architect Richard W. Gibney, RLA, ISA of Gibney Design LA PC said: “Having the wider variety of paver products to choose from offers a client the opportunity to focus on achieving even greater individuality.” Find inspiring photos, project specifications, distributors and recommended contractors at cambridgepavers.com and you’ll be ready to express yourself.

Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc. He is one of the founders and a current board member of the Interlocking Pavement Institute. Organized in 1993, ICPI is the North American trade association representing the interlocking concrete paver industry and considered by peer associations around the world as the leader in development and dissemination of technical information for design professionals and contractors. Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.

Park Shore Country Day Camp, School & Extreme STEAM Science Kids Playing with a Purpose: Fun activities and classes infused with 21st Century Skill Development “Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.” - Mr. Rogers Park Shore Country Day Camp, School and Extreme Steam Science Kids leads the way when you consider the importance of preparing children for the future that awaits them. Their programs are cutting edge and help their boys and girls develop strong social skills, critical thinking, collaborative team work, creativity and adaptability while at the same time having fun. “Playing with a purpose” is a central theme that winds its way through all that they offer the children who attend their programs. The children thoroughly enjoy their experiences while maintaining fun and excitement in a 21st Century play and learning environment. “21st Century Skills” (Collaboration and Teamwork, Creativity and Imagination, and Critical Thinking and Problem Solving) are defined as the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be competitive in the modern day workforce. At Park Shore Country Day Camp, campers participate in a wide variety of fun and exciting activities including swim, athletics, arts & crafts, MakerSpace and Extreme Adventure that challenge them to share, co-create and collaborate with one another, while developing social skills along the way. Campers have an opportunity to try new

things, overcome fears and limitations, navigate a variety of social situations, and end their time at Park Shore with a sense of growth and accomplishment - all while having FUN. Sam Coiro, Camp parent, “Park Shore offers an exceptional balance between exciting physical activities and creative, mind inspiring specialty areas. This is not the status quo of camps, and the staff is beyond caring and diligent. My son and daughter thrive at Park Shore and could not be more pleased with our camp experience!” Extreme STEAM Science Kids campers participate in a full STEAM curriculum. Each two week session is driven by a common theme which includes cross-cutting concepts in Robotics, Engineering, Technology, Life, Earth, and Physical Science, Artistic Design and Mathematics. Extreme STEAM Science Kids Directors and Teachers believe in developing scientific skills and then letting their campers use those skills to solve problems while working on a team. In this way they will develop critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and adaptation all needed for success while growing up in the 21st century. Their approach to learning has been developed with regard to the New York State Science Learning Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, yet keeps in mind that children truly grasp concepts when they are given real world problems to solve in a guided, yet playful and entertaining environment. Jayne Tom, Extreme STEAM Science Kids parent: “Haidin waits all year to come to Extreme STEAM Science Kids. It has given him a renewed interest when he’s in school in science and all the other subjects. What really struck me about the program is how theory seamlessly becomes application.” Park Shore Country Day School preschool and kindergarten students are introduced at a very early age to the importance of 21st Century skill development through their extensive Computer Science, STEAM, Literacy, Math, Music and Art classes along with Physical Education situated on their beautiful 15 acre campus. Students thrive in a nurturing

and warm environment educationally as well as socially. The face of education is ever changing. Through the use of integrated technology, cooperative and collaborative learning structures, cross-curriculum teaching, and goal setting, the teachers at Park Shore are truly preparing their preschool and kindergarten students for the challenges that await them in elementary education and beyond. Andrew Adams, Park Shore school parent, “The in-depth focus on actual skills and critical thinking that has been lost in public schools has been found at Park Shore. The leaps and bounds of my daughter’s problem solving skills is extraordinary both in academics, as well as playtime. Park Shore has laid the foundation for a lifetime of continued learning and a love for it.” Bob Budah, co-owner of Park Shore, “In a society that changes ever so quickly, we have aligned our programs and philosophies to meet the needs of our campers and students. We are committed to offering our young people opportunities for growth and development while still having fun.” Park Shore is truly a unique ecosystem for young people providing fun and fostering 21st Century Skill Development.
