provide a veritable garden of photographic delight. Among the exhibiting artists are Patricia Beary, Sandra Carrion, Lawrence Chatterton, Patricia Colombraro, Susan Dooley, Rosalie Frost, Andrea M. And it was worth the peek. Park Shore Country Day Camp, School and Extreme STEAM Science Kids Camp is situated on 15 beautiful acres and is a kid’s paradise. Established by the Budah family in 1959, Park Shore has been offering amazing and creative summer camp programs to the children on Long Island ever since. Park Shore caters to children ages 2-14. According to Bob Budah, co-owner of Park Shore, “I have seen the evolution of the day camp experience first-hand from a very unique perspective. I literally grew up at Park Shore,
eventually worked there and am now the co-owner with my brother Chuck. Although Park Shore looks very different than it did in 1959, the core values and benefits of the camp experience have not changed. Park Shore is an ultimate combination of historically rich traditions balanced with current trends to meet the needs of families in the 21st century. Simply said, some things change, some things never change.” Park Shore Country Day Camp & Extreme STEAM Science Kids offer 2, 4, 6 and 8 week programs beginning on June 27th. 450 Deer Park Road Dix Hills, NY 11746 (631) 499-8580 www.ParkShoreDayCamp.com

Anytime of the year is a good time to go on a vacation and a great to time to be in Hawaii. Hawaii is an all season destinations and the islands’ offerings vary from urban on Honolulu to the luxury resorts of Maui to the natural wonders of Kauai and the Big Island that makes it a location that is appealing to all kinds of visitors. There are two other islands that are less developed- Molokai and Lanai. All of the Hawaiian islands are rich in culture and worth a visit. Hawaii emerged from the sea millions of years ago, forged by the power of volcanoes. The natural beauty of Hawaii’s fragile environment comes from its geographical isolation from other ecosystems. Ancient deities play a huge role in Hawaiian life today. Gods and goddesses tend to be associated with particular parts of the land and most of them are connected with many places. One of the most important ways the ancient Hawaiians showed respect for their gods and goddess was through the hula. Various forms of hula were performed as prayers to the gods and as praise to the chiefs. Hula is uniquely a Hawaiian dance accompanied by a chant or song that preserves the stories, traditions and culture of its people and exemplifies their beauty. There are many types and styles of hula. The most familiar type of hula to visitors is danced with western influenced features and music and is known as Hula auana [modern hula] while the Hula kahiko [ancient hula] is danced to dramatic chants and drums with traditional costumes. Both artforms are impressive and you can find yourself getting lost in any hula performance. I love to
engage in authentic experiences and really understand the local people when I am in a place that is not my home. One of the most striking qualities in today’s Hawaiian culture is the sense of family, or ohana. While spending time in Hawaii I enjoyed feeling this connection and learning about a rich and diverse history. My childhood memories of Hawaii come from the Brady Bunch TV Show and all I could think about was the curse of the tiki until I experienced it myself and learned so much more. One of my favorite places to spend time in Hawaii is on the island of Oahu. I love the culture and its history. The north shore of Oahu is unbelievable with its beaches and scenic views. I loved Waimea Bay, which is the birthplace of big wave surfing. To really experience all that this island has to offer you should rent a car and drive around. In addition, I enjoyed a lot of my time spent at the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. It is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in the islands. The beaches and natural beauty are unparalleled, but a major must- see is Pearl Harbor. The attack on the American navy that occurred here during 1941 brought the United States into the Second World War. The memorial on Oahu has a memorial to the USS Arizona and you can take a boat to see it. This place is heart wrenching. The first time I visited Pearl Harbor was right after I spent time in Japan and visited Hiroshima where the first atomic bomb was dropped by the USA in 1945. I could not believe how blessed I was as a history teacher to experience these historic sites firsthand. I felt like I was in a dream. I was eager for school to begin so I could share my new knowledge with my students even though it was an emotional experience. I visited
Pearl Harbor numerous times and each time spent hours there. I love wandering around the site and also viewing artifacts in the museum while creating lesson plans in my head about what I want to use and how I will implement them into my classroom. Even if you are not a history teacher or a history lover it is a must see as an American. Hawaii is also known for many food items and two of my favorite were shave ice and malasadas. Shave ice is an ice- based dessert made by shaving a block of ice. Even though it is made with shaved ice it is called shave ice in Hawaii. It is refreshing and delicious anytime. A malasada is a fried dough pastry that is
coated in granulated sugar. If you eat too many you will start to look like a malasada. They are amazing and worth every calorie! The fresh air energizes you. The warm and tranquil waters refresh you. The breathtaking beauty renews you. Perfect weather aside, Hawaii might be the warmest place anyone can visit. You will feel great mana [spiritual power] while traveling in Hawaii. Adventure beyond the obvious. Live life for the moments now and you will be happy. I hope you will plan a journey soon and comment here to let me know about your personal experience in Hawaii.

Honey Kale Chips
These kale chips taste like candy, and with only four simple ingredients, they’re actually good for you! Ingredients: 1 head of green curly kale Olive oil Sea salt Honey Directions: Preheat oven to 325F. Rinse the kale to remove any impurities. Then, de-stem each stalk of the kale by pinching the base of the stem with one hand, and using your thumb and forefinger of the other hand to push the leaves up and away from the stem.
Take the kale leaves and place in a bowl. Drizzle with 2-3 tbsp olive oil, and use your hands to mix the oil into the leaves. Place the kale on a tray lined with parchment paper, and sprinkle with sea salt. Then, drizzle the kale with honey (or maple or agave syrup, depending on your preferences). Bake at 325F for 15 minutes, then remove from oven and enjoy.

“Stuck In A Good Place Crooked Rail
By Mike Savalli On assignment from "Village Connection Magazine" I was lucky enough to catch some quality music at the Crooked Rail in East Northport, last Saturday night. If you've never been there, it's a small bar, some would say, "a dive", but that's only in reference to its size. There was no surliness from the crowd, on the contrary they were friendly, and rowdy and cool. It's about a block away from the train station. They have a pool table, and oh, a stage. First off was Mr. Scary, a Dokken tribute band from Las Vegas. If you're a fan of 80's metal, then this band has got your fix. I'll use some trite words...screeching vocals (David Lee Williams), shredding guitar (Gee Silver), yada, yada...but it's really true. At one point lead Williams said of his guitarist, "he's got 12 fingers." I thought, "yeah, that sounds about right." I was more than impressed by their cover, "It's not Love." Yet, a little disappointed they didn't play my favorite, "Dream Warriors." These guys have a great sound, a do good justice to all that's best of heavy metal. Next up was local artist Jimmy Gerovac (Jimmy G) of the band Craving Strange. Jimmy did a strong solo set, on his acoustic, that kept the energy moving between the high energy of the other acts. Most memorably the heart-wrenchingly passionate "Heroin," and a feel-good cover of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror." (Jimmy, it was great talking with you. I hope to see you again. Stay sincere!) Last up, (for me, I left early, sorry Kiss cover band), was Stuck On Planet Earth, of Vaughan, Ontario. These guys were in he studio earlier that day, on "In the Village Live with Jim Savalli.
I watched that as a primer for what to expect at the show. They showed a subdued, melodic vibe, with a penchant for catchy tunes. Their live-show however was from another planet. From the opening chords it was clear that these guys came to rock. With sky-high decibels, and feedback that vibrated my bones. With the force of a tidal-wave they knocked all thoughts and worried from my mind. Projecting this wall of sound, they remind me of bands like Husker Du, but with the popping base and melodies of the Strokes. These Canucks aren't messing around. I see crowds of sweating, slam-dancing kids in their future. They also have the versatility, and dedication to their craft to make a good run at it. Their album shows some of this off, and that their sound has substance, and is not just a lot of noise. I was very glad to get a taste of their music in such an intimate setting. They'll be touring the US, with shows in Austin, TX; North Charleston, SC; and Myrtle Beach, SC. If they come to a town near you, be sure to crack a Molsons and go see em live, eh? I'm Mike, I'm out! http://www.villageconnectionmagazine.com/in-the-village-livewith-jim-savalli https://www.facebook.com/MrScaryDokkenTribute/ Jimmy Gerovac https://www.facebook.com/stuckonplanetearth/ https://www.facebook.com/thecrookedrail

PAVERS CAN DRIVE UP BOTH CURB APPEAL AND HOME VALUE A question posed: If you were driving leisurely down a street in suburbia USA and you came across a driveway that unlike most others along the street, was beautifully paved with an interesting and color coordinated, interlocking concrete paver system, would it turn your head? Well, let it be known that concrete pavers — first introduced in this country in the early seventies — unlike asphalt or poured concrete, continues to spur ongoing consumer attention largely because of their incomparable beauty and overall visual impact. According to Better Homes & Gardens, one of America’s most trusted magazines, if your home's curb appeal makes a great first impression, everyone — including potential homebuyers — will want to see what's also inside. However, if for now a new paver driveway is not in your budget, their online publication also suggested that a welldesigned walkway would make your home feel warm and inviting. For a dramatic and somewhat simple improvement to a straight concrete path, replace it with a contoured one made of concrete pavers, which can be arranged in a straight path or with soft curves in a host of patterns. A contrasting border will further define the landscape design and new driveway using the same pavers or ones in a complementing color, texture or pattern can become next year’s project. Symmetry is an important factor for increasing roadside appeal. This is where pavers and supplementary hardscaping products such as the manufactured wall systems from Cambridge, recognized as one of the leading national brands, can pull the whole design together for you. Landscape walls to support elevations, for example where there are slopes in your property; a well-thought out progression of steps leading to the front door; an inviting front stoop; landscape lighting and demarcation driveway paver lights can all contribute to making great first impressions. Columns also play a fundamental role structurally, functionally and aesthetically and you can even opt for a matching, fully assembled or pre-packaged Cambridge Column Mailbox with a powder coated, forged metal door in an antique finish. Wallstones and decorative edgerstones can be placed around trees and plant beds for greater continuity.
Most homeowners opt for a full house siding such as vinyl, aluminum, cement fiber or natural stone. But also consider a manufactured stone veneer product on the facade. The styles of Stone Veneer from Cambridge are molded from natural stone found here in America and retain all of the dimensional characteristics of the handpicked pieces from which they were cast. Stone Veneer siding offers the added advantage of tying in with paver and wallstones color choices in other areas. Planning to sell your home? Welcoming hardscapes can turn a driveby into a stop and buy. Some pavingstone manufacturers offer product warranties. For example, the lifetime warranty from Cambridge is fully transferable should you sell your home. Vivid Cambridge ArmorTec® pavingstone colors are specially formulated to last for many years to come. Before choosing a brand, check for assurances like these to add more value to your investment.
Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc. He is one of the founders and a current board member of the Interlocking Pavement Institute. Organized in 1993, ICPI is the North American trade association representing the interlocking concrete paver industry and considered by peer associations around the world as the leader in development and dissemination of technical information for design professionals and contractors. Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.

GNARLY KARMA W. ROBBIE KRIEGER OF THE DOORS, EDGAR WINTER GROUP IN NJ TOURDATES AND MORE Having recently taped a performance for their TV debut on My Long Island TV and Verizon FiOS1’s “Rick’s Rising Stars”, been featured on Reverbnation.com’s “CROWD PICKS”, Eastern Surf Magazine’s On the Record, premiered their video for “Grey Street” (Dave Matthews Band Cover) via Elmore Magazine, AND been mentioned in a recent New York Times article regarding their studio: Montclair Records - Long Island’s own Gnarly Karma seem to be spreading their good vibes to bigger and bigger audiences as they head further into 2016! With their debut album “Classic Breeze”- released via iTunes last September - as the catalyst for their recent growth, the band is set to continue bringing their mix of different influences while still keeping unique elements to their sound that make them stand out to bigger audiences. Too see for yourself, you can check them out as they hit the stage at Legendary downtown NYC venue The Bitter End Saturday, April 16th and rock one of their biggest shows to date- opening for Robby Krieger of The Doors & Special Guest The Edgar Winter Band Wednesday, April 27th at The Wellmont Theatre, Montclair, NJ! (Full List of Upcoming Dates Below) The group consisting of members Mike Renert (Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica), Jarrod Beyer (Drums, Percussion), Ryan McAdam (Bass), and Billy Hanley (Alto & Tenor Saxophone, Keyboard, BGV’s) brings a wide and varied range of influences to the table equating to their unique sound, which is most often associated with that of Dave Matthews Band, Sublime, and Mumford & Sons, but not restricted by genre. Originally starting in 2012 with Renert and Beyer, McAdam and Hanley later came into the mix having gone to school together with Beyer, who’d also performed with McAdam in Alt band “We Love Radio”. Though the “outer layer” of their music could be most closely associated with the folksy “jam” elements of bands like DMB, Mumford, or even O.A.R., a more unique style mixing a harder acoustic-punk, post-hardcore edge in many of the songs off “Classic Breeze” makes it evident that--like many bands often pigeonholed by genres--there’s more to find when you keep peeling. With songs like the acoustic driven “Neptune” evoking Jimmy Eat World’esque or even Taking Back Sunday comparisons, “Directions” could be more closely associated with that of
Dave Matthews through not only Hanley’s eloquent horn arrangement but Renerts vocals as well. A tune like “Please Come Home” brings these elements full circle with its catchy chorus “Don’t ask me where I’m going // Don’t ask me where I’ve been” with overdubbed crowd vocals making the true live band experience unmistakeable. Screenshots From Gnarly Karma’s “Grey Street” (Dave Matthews Band Cover) Video Directed By Andrew Malary and shot at Montclair Records. Upcoming Dates: Saturday, April 16th, 9PM @ The Bitter End, New York, NY Wednesday, April 27th, 8PM @ The Wellmont Theatre w/ Robby Krieger of The Doors, Montclair, NJ Thursday, April 28th, 8PM @ The Space at Westbury, Westbury, NY Friday, July 15th, 10PM @ Blue Canoe Bar & Grill, Greenport, NY Sunday, July 17th (Time TBA) @ 13th Annual Hicksville Summer Street Fair Saturday, August 13th, 10PM @ Blue Canoe Bar & Grill, Greenport, NY Sunday, August 28th (Time TBA) @ Sayville Seafood Festival, Sayville, NY Friday, September 23rd (Time TBA) Greenport Maritime Festival With a number of various musical elements making up the true core of Gnarly Karma, the band has said of both past and upcoming performances “We give it our all at every show, and do everything in our power to make sure the people that come to see us feel our energy and contribute to it”. And with so many upcoming live dates in the next few months, you can be the first to contribute to that energy Saturday, April 16th at the Bitter End in NYC and most certainly Wednesday, April 27th at the Wellmont Theatre as they open for Robby Krieger of The Doors with the Edgar Winter Band!
