Lauren Levine

10 • village connection • summer 2014

Lauren Levine is a teacher and student of art and yoga. As a painter, Lauren’s work explores natural themes, saturated with a vibrant color palette. She is inspired by the spiritual, inviting energy of the outdoors and transforms these moments into fantastical landscapes and broad, colorful designs. Recently, Lauren has merged her fine art and yoga practices to produce participatory, installation projects exploring creativity and mindfulness. Lauren strongly believes in the complementary nature of art and yoga in healing the self and transforming society. As an educator she utilizes both traditions to serve youth and adults with an egalitarian style of learning that yields individual growth and social justice. Lauren received undergraduate degree in art history and studio art from SUNY New Paltz and her graduate degree in Art Education from New York University. During her time at NYU, Lauren was fortunate to research and employ creative mindfulness; a synthesis of both yogic meditation and fine arts that she invented as a tool to help her young students foster non-judgmental sentience prior to artistic practice. Since the development of this practice, Lauren has implemented creative mindfulness with youth involved in the juvenile justice system through the non-profit organization, Artistic Noise. Lauren has also worked as an assistant curator for a prominent Andy Warhol exhibition at the Dorsky Museum, which led to her publication in the Andy Warhol: Private and Public in 151 Photographs catalogue in 2010. She is a member of the Long Island Arts Alliance and the National Association of Art Educators. Currently, Lauren is pursing a career as a public school art educator, while leading various community and school-based yoga programming through her company, Good Life Yoga. She is also an adjunct professor of Hatha Yoga at Molloy College and teaching artist for Nassau and Suffolk BOCES Arts-in-Education. Lauren understands that the arts require a particular vision, an absorption in experience and an application of creativity that is cathartic and didactic for the artist and community in which the art resides. Yoga requires a constitution of awareness, an ability to release anguish and a call for compassionate social action. The teachings of yoga involve contemplative practices that serve the self and the community in which the self resides, much like the artist and the artwork. When evaluating the healing and transformative capabilities Lauren has experienced and observed through the arts and yoga, she realizes this power evolves from the mindfulness that necessitates both practices. Lauren is enthusiastic to continue her research and implementation of creative mindfulness, as she continues her path as a devoted teacher and student of art and yoga.

Tame Summer Hair The calendar finally says it’s officially summer, and the heat hits you like a blast when you open the front door. Add in the humidity and it feels like a sauna out there. While many of us like to keep cool by hanging out poolside or lounging at the beach, the combination of humidity, salt and chlorine can make it tricky to keep your tresses in shape. No matter how sleek your hair looks in the morning, by the time you walk to the car you resemble Little Orphan Annie, with a frizzy tangled mess of hair. Here is some advice, to help you tame those tresses, beat the heat and have fabulous summer hair. Protect your color. For color-treated hair, wear a hat or look for products that have sunscreen in them. The number one protection for color-treated hair is a scarf or bandanna, because the sun will fade your color. You can color-coordinate it with your outfit; make it a fashion statement. People who dye their hair red need to be extra-cautious. To keep your color fresh, ask your stylist for a color-conditioning shampoo such as Aveda Color Conserve, which helps preserve hair color for up to six weeks. It will also keep your highlights from getting too brassy. Dare to go straight. The quest for frizz-free hair is a constant summer battle. Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight Cream relaxes the hair’s natural wave over time, thanks to plant-derived

12 • village connection • summer 2014

fibers from organic cassava root that create a locking layer to help hold your hair straight. And it works progressively, so the more you use it, the sleeker your hair becomes. In fact, five consecutive applications will make hair stay straight for up to three washes. Embrace your curls. Sometimes, there’s no way to fight the humidity, so just let your curls go in the summer. You can always smooth out your bangs with a blow dryer, but that’s where you should stop. Give yourself and your hair a break and stop processing it with heat tools like blow dryers and flat irons, which cause breakage. They won’t give you a smooth look all day anyway. As soon as you step outside into the humidity, it will curl up. Just look for a good serum or spray, preferably one with UV protection, which will help smooth the frizzies. Stick with a low ponytail or bun. High ponytails will create “wrinkles” in your hair at the crown of your head, and elastic bands can cause breakage. Instead, a low ponytail or chignon will give you a sleeker look with less damage. Adriana Vater is the Creative Director and co-founder of Spa Adriana at 266 Main Street in Huntington Village. by Rich Rivkin

Vivien Pollack Vivien Pollack started as a textile designer after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. As a freelance textile designer, she spent the next 20 years creating designs on silk for manufacturers. Wanting to do her own art, she left the industry, got a part time job and used her design skills painting silk scarves and silk paintings. She recently became interested in other mediums, such as painting with oils. She really loved the idea of painting outside scenery, “plein air,” and oils lent themselves to doing this easier than painting with her silk dyes. Now her oil paints go with her when she travels, and she has painted in Maine, Block Island and places on Long Island. Long Island, she says, has such wonderful scenery that there is a wealth of inspiration. Working as a textile designer, the work atmosphere limited you to the area you were most proficient in. Now she enjoys being able to move between the different mediums and seeks the challenge to expand her creativity. She likes the fact that with oils she can go over mistakes, whereas with silk one usually has to live with them. Vivien's silk paintings have been in galleries and museums throughout Long Island and Maryland and some of her pieces will go to Santa Fe this summer for an exhibit. Her handpainted scarves are on etsy.com at her store Vivien Pollack Design and you can see her oil paintings and other work at www.vivienpollack.com. She also teaches silk painting at the Long Island Art League.

Since then, Eddie has practiced many mediums including oil, water color, sculpting, jewlery design, 3d foamboard display design, sign making, airbrush, graphic art, and most recently, “Sumi-e,” which is oriental ink painting. On the more technical side, Eddie is also skilled at computer photo editing and restoration. To see more artwork visit Eddie Hug’s public art albums on Facebook.

Five years ago, MaryAnn became a Certified Zentangle® Teacher (CZT) and soon added Zentangle to her roster of available programs. Zentangle is a worldwide phenomenon that employs the drawing of simple, repeated shapes to create miniature pieces of art which help people relax, lower their stress levels, and consciously shift focus. The idea of Zentangle is a mindful, meditative practice which has a by-product of a piece of art. The method is used effectively by artists to help unlock and release creativity but even therapists and clinicians can incorporate it in helping patients and their families deal with the stress of illnesses and recovery. In corporate culture, it’s useful to help distress, refocus, and even in team building. And it’s a great tool for teachers! Zentangle is a life skill applicable to just about any stressful situation! Ghosts From the Past at Henry Lloyd Manor James Lloyd of Boston purchased and leased the land once occupied by Native American Indians in 1684. By 1711, James’ son Henry Lloyd I inherited the land now known as Lloyd Harbor, and established a working plantation and manor house. The original property contained several outbuildings. In 1722 and 1732 some additions were made. Slaves were brought in to run the plantation. One of the slaves, Jupiter Hammon, became the first published Black poet in America. When Henry died in 1763, his son Henry Lloyd II, a Loyalist, acquired the property, but it was confiscated by the government. John Lloyd II, a patriot, took back the property and continued to use it as a working farm. By the 20th century, non-family members had purchased the house and it fell into a state of neglect. In 1921, Marshall Field decided to incorporate the house into his property. After doing some repairs, Henry Lloyd Manor became the gate house to the Marshall Field estate. Ruth Pruyn Field sold the estate in 1961 to the State of New York which called it “Caumsett.” The Henry Lloyd house was occupied by estate employees until the mid-1960’s. In 1978, the Lloyd Harbor Historical Society was granted a contract by New York State “to restore, maintain and operate the Henry Lloyd Manor House.” Clairaudient medium Joe Giaquinto and I toured the old homestead. Several reliable sources told us stories about apparent paranormal activity at the house. A barking dog and a singing canary was heard when no animals were around. A woman who was in the

22 • village connection • summer 2014

kitchen saw an actual hand floating in mid-air. Lights have been known to blink in the meeting room, and colder, heavier air could be felt in one of the bedrooms. While photographing, I received the image of an orb in a room on the main level. I then walked along the path to the front of the house. Twice I turned to look behind me, because I had the distinct feeling that I was being followed, yet no one was there. Joe did an EVP session (Electronic Voice Phenomenon.) When Joe analyzed his recordings, he found an EVP of pots and pans banging. A second EVP picked up the sound of a man’s voice saying "thank you." Despite the spirits that may roam there, the Henry Lloyd Manor remains a historical showpiece and museum for all to enjoy. Bursitis: A Chronic Annoyance Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa. Bursae are thin, fluidfilled sacs found between skin and bones, tendons and bones and ligaments and bones. When your skin, tendons, ligaments and bones move they cause friction. The job of the bursa is to decrease the friction so these tissues do not get inflammed. We have approximately 160 bursae in our body. When there is too much friction occurring, often from doing repetitive motions over and over again - for example a pitcher throwing a baseball over and over again - the bursae can enlarge and form more fluid to deal with the increased friction. This leads to inflammation and irritation of the bursa. Bursa of the knee, shoulder, hip and elbow are the most likely to become inflamed. Signs and symptoms vary depending on which bursa is inflamed. For example, I get Pes Anserine Bursitis. This bursa lies on the inner surface of the knee where your hamstrings (back of the thigh), adductors (inner thigh muscles) and Sartorius (large muscle that crosses the top of your thigh) all meet and insert into the bone. I get dull pain in that area of both knees after running long distances. It will persist for days and is alleviated with stretching these muscles and putting ice on the area. I also massage the area to increase circulation for improved healing. Other areas that you may feel a dull ache and could possibly be suffering from bursitis are: • Knee - supra patellar bursa where you’ll feel a dull ache in the front of the knee

26 • village connection • summer 2014

• Shoulder - subacrmomial bursitis, dull aching pain in the front outer side of the shoulder joint, pain when lifting your arm over your head and increased pain at night especially when lying on the shoulder. • Elbow - olecranon bursitis, pain at the tip of the elbow that increases when bending and straightening your elbow. • Hip - Iliopsoas bursitis, pain occurs in the front of the thigh and you may feel it as far down as your knee and the pain will increase when you are walking and stepping with the opposite foot. You may feel like you want to take smaller steps on the unaffected leg. Bursitis is hard to treat because it is often an overuse injury which requires rest, and when you are active and exercise often resting is hard to do! Remember, this information is not to diagnose or treat any pain you have as you always need to see your doctor and discuss pain with him or her to see exactly what is going on.

FERNtastic

We may not always think about ferns as being a great landscape plant, but rather more of something that grows wild in the woods in moist, shady locations. Perhaps since they are also associated with prehistoric times, where they grew in swampy outbacks and bogs, there is a tendency to exclude them as part of our landscape and choose something more mainstream. Ferns are actually very reliable perennials that can add many years of interest to your landscape with relatively little maintenance. They can have a "wow" factor that many would not think of until you see how amazing they look. Their fronds bring a soft, cool, breezy feel to the garden and they also provide an excellent backdrop or foreground to other plants, depending on what variety it is. Whether it's the stately Ostrich,Cinnamon or Royal Fern or the tiny Deer Fern, they all add a bit of magic to the landscape. The cinnamon colored hairs on the fronds of the Cinnamon Fern has the appearance of large cinnamon sticks as they rise from the center of the plant. The Autumn Fern makes an amazing show as their fronds emerge in bronze and red. The beautiful Japanese Painted Fern will add a remarkable spark of color with its silvery white, green and burgundy red fronds. They are great for brightening up a dark, shady area. Ferns make great companion plants to other shade lovers, including hosta, pulmonaria, jack-in-the-pulpit, Bleeding Hearts, Solomon Seal, begonias, ligularia, caladiums, heuchera, tiarella

and astilbes. They work wonders in containers as well as combined with annuals or perennials. Some varieties naturalize beautifully in a mass along woodland edges and shady outcroppings. Christmas Fern and Leatherwood Fern are evergreen, so they provide year round interest in the landscape. Hayscented Fern will spread by runners and is excellent for erosion control on a hillside in sun or shade. It is an excellent groundcovers along with the New York Fern and Branford Rambler. Lady Ferns and Maidenhair Ferns have delicate textured fronds that contrast well against the bold foliage of large leaf perennials and shrubs. Smaller growing varieties such as the Ebony Spleenwort Fern are great tucked away between the rocks in a rock garden or sprawling over stones as their soft texture helps to tone down the hardscape. Consider planting some ferns, if you haven't already, and enjoy them in your landscape for years to come. Photos By Alan Stableford

Summer on Long Island LIU Post College hosts charity Art & Photography Exhibit

LIU Post is hosting an exhibit in the Hutchins Gallery, located in the Schwartz Library, from Aug. 2 to Aug. 27, titled “Endless Summer – Visions of Long Island.” The exhibit is a fund raising event for the Nassau County Firefighter’s Operation Wounded Warrior (NCF-OWW), a non-profit organization centered on providing much-needed items to the wounded men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. Curated by Jill Rader Levine, an art consultant, the exhibit includes art from more than 60 of Long Island’s most distinguished, awardwinning artists and photographers, who are making donations to

the NCF-OWW, as well as donating a portion of any sales of their artwork to the organization. The theme of the exhibit is summer on Long Island expressed in a wide variety of styles and mediums. The exhibition will be professionally judged by Seung Lee, director of Fine Arts and professor of Art at LIU Post, Marc Kopman, a professor of the Hutton House Lectures at LIU Post, and Dominick Totino, the official photographer for the Queens Borough president. The exhibit, which will run from Aug. 2 to Aug. 27 is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

in perfect symmetry

putting together a comprehensive outdoor landscape

before There comes a time when facing a new or revitalized landscaping design can be an intimidating task at hand. Where to put this and that, which materials will provide lasting beauty with minimal maintenance, and how to stay in full control of the outcome are among the most common concerns of homeowners. It is my opinion that maintaining a strong sense of symmetry from start-to-finish is a good rule to adopt. The use of symmetry introduces order, which gives unity and permits us to see clearly and to comprehend at once both the ensemble and the details. When creating landscape design, best results can often be achieved if what is on the ground is in symmetry with all of the home’s surroundings, be they natural, architectural or simply functional. The attributes inherent in hardscape materials — pavements, wall systems, pre-packaged water features, ambient lighting and outdoor lifestyle amenities — are well suited to capture one or all three of these prerequisites and ultimately, pull the project together. Here’s why: • A beautifully implemented pavement can visually link areas of the entire outdoor footprint. • The more popular colors of interlocking pavers are derived from shades found in natural stone. Consequently, they lend themselves to more natural environment as opposed to poured concrete, black asphalt and mediocre, low-tech patio block. • Carefully selected textures are another way to boost symmetry. Although many designers encourage mixing shapes, styles and textures, it is important to maintain a common thread throughout the overall plan. • The diversity of patterns (the way pavers and segmental wall units are arranged) should also be limited, to not upset continuity. Although it is nice to add an accent to specific areas of overall paved surfaces. This can be quite easily achieved with specially-crafted design kits used to inset circle and fan patterns. The introduction of a different type of paver can add unique border and banding treatments. Ask an experienced designer or contractor to show you some pattern ideas from his or her

38 • village connection • summer 2014

after portfolio. Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations from their personal experiences. Don’t be afraid to put a contractor to task for creative ideas and specific solutions relative to your circumstances. Vertical Surfaces Lend Themselves to Continuity Manufactured hardscape materials offer an array of choices for vertical surfaces as well. Options include segmental wall systems, decorative columns, column mailboxes, stone veneer and staircases — all combining form with function while providing surface colors and textures that match or coordinate with an interlocking concrete pavement system. The wall systems can be used in a variety of applications ranging from retaining walls to perimeter walls around areas of the design or to border property lines in lieu of fencing. Because they can be arranged in straight lines, in circular shapes or in serpentine lengths, the walls can follow along paths, be used to delineate levels on the landscape, or be placed around trees and serve as borders for plant beds. By sticking with one manufacturer for pavers and walls, you can be more assured of coordinated results. Once you have a plan in place, you can move forward with confidence, right away or in stages, knowing that material is readily available from established and reliable manufacturers who are there to help you reach your objectives without the fear of a “patchy” outcome. Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc. He is one of the founders and a current board member of the Interlocking Pavement Institute. Organized in 1993, ICPI is the North American trade association representing the interlocking concrete paver industry and considered by peer associations around the world as the leader in development and dissemination of technical information for design professionals and contractors. Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many outdoor living products.

Artist Spotlight "Beach Chairs" by STANKO

STANKO, a lifelong Long Islander, has been showing his unique and whimsical art for over 20 years. From his home in Valley Stream to the world beyond, he finds endless inspiration in the iconic, the familiar and even the mundane (sunflowers, beach scenes, maybe even a grilled cheese sandwich), and each painting is lovingly created with bright fields of color in his signature eye-catching style. STANKO’s paintings are buoyant and optimistic, reflective of his colorful outlook on the world around him, and sprinkled with wit and plain old fun. STANKO’s work has been exhibited at the Mistretta Gallery in Locust Valley, the Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton, the Empire State Building and many other venues in the New York metropolitan area, including being represented by RIPE

Art Gallery in Huntington. He has been featured in a variety of print and television interviews, numerous videos and has donated paintings and/or Stanko T-Shirts to benefit various breast cancer organizations , Robert Kennedy Jr.’s Waterkeeper Alliance and ALS benefits, among other causes. STANKO’s works are also in the collection of Vice President Al Gore, The City of New York, 1-800- Flowers and many other private collections. He also has designed album covers for American folk artist Caroline Doctorow, daughter of author E.L. Doctorow. STANKO recently had one of his painting featured on the front cover of the East End publication Dan’s Papers. Visit Ripe Art Gallery at 1028 Park Avenue, Huntington or online at www.ripeartgal.com
