Meal Prep Like a Pro

Meal prepping is simply asking the “what’s to eat” question BEFORE it’s actually time to eat! There are many different ways we can meal prep based on our lifestyle and preferences. But all will help us choose balanced food choices, save time and money, avoid food waste, and help us feel our best! Option 1: Portioned Out Meals This is when we prepare an entire recipe and portion it out into individual food storage containers for easy eating. Perfect for breakfast or snacks on the run, taking lunch to work, or having dinner ready to simply heat up after a busy day. Examples: • Breakfast: Overnight Oats, Egg Muffin Cups, Protein Pancakes • Lunch: Chinese Chicken Salad, Mediterranean Pasta Salad, Avocado Chicken Salad • Dinner: White Chicken Chili, Cauliflower Fried Rice, Broccoli & Cheese Chicken Casserole • Snacks: Yogurt Parfaits, Deli Meat & Cheese Snack Box, Trail Mix Option 2: Staple Food Item Prep By preparing a few staple food items ahead of time, you will be able to whip up meals and snacks QUICK during the week. This will allow you to have convenient roasted veggies to add to an omelette or salad, a hard boiled egg to grab as a snack, or cooked proteins ready to toss into pasta, etc! Examples: • Proteins: grilled chicken breast, hard boiled eggs, sauteed lean ground turkey/beef • Carbs: brown rice/quinoa, roasted sweet potatoes, chickpea pasta • Produce: roasted veggies, chopped fruits/veggies for snacking, washed and chopped salad greens • Fats: homemade dressings, guacamole, hummus

Nutrition Expert JAMIE MILLER

Option 3: Purchase Your Prep For those who just don’t enjoy cooking or don’t have the time, you can still meal prep by purchasing convenience items that’ll ensure you are ready to create healthy meals. Examples: • Proteins: rotisserie chicken, lean chicken sausage, canned tuna/salmon/chicken, no nitrate deli meat, frozen cooked shrimp • Carbs: microwavable brown rice/quinoa packets, frozen potatoes, frozen corn/peas/beans, no salt added canned beans/peas/corn • Produce: frozen fruit and veggies, no-prep veggies (grape tomatoes, baby carrots, snap peas), bagged salads, no salt added canned vegetables • Fats: pesto, avocado, nut butter, dressings, guacamole, hummus

S U PERB OWL T IP S SCORE A TOUCHDOWN FOR HEALTH

Nachos, chicken wings, dips, pizza, and beer… these are just a few star players at any Superbowl Party. So during the big game, is it possible to make healthy choices? Village Dietitian, Jamie Miller, has a play-by-play of how to not have a nutritional fumble while watching the big game. 1. D on’t go into the game starving. By eating a balanced, healthy breakfast and lunch, you won’t be so tempted to dive into the chip bowl from out of control hunger. 2. P ick your seat wisely. Instead of sitting right next to the appetizer table, find a spot that makes it difficult to reach for more food. This can really help with mindless grazing. 3. P ractice head-to-head matchups of indulgent vs. healthy fare. Make a gameday rule that for every wing you eat, you have three celery sticks. Or for every brownie, you have 1 cup of fruit. If your healthy choices outnumber your not-so-healthy ones, you can walk away feeling proud and satisfied, while still enjoying some classic game day foods. 4. W atch what you’re sipping on. Use the 1:1 drinking rule. For every alcoholic beverage you plan to drink, follow it up with a glass of water. Not only can alcohol add a hefty amount of calories to your evening, but lowered inhibitions may result in more munching than you intended. 5. Bring a healthy dish. This will ensure there will be at least one option to fill a big portion of your plate with. You can also impress your friends with a nutritious contribution to the spread that’s still absolutely delicious. Here’s some recipe to try out!

Here’s a couple recipes to kickoff your football party with a few Winners! Cheesy Buffalo Chicken Dip Ingredients:

• 1/2 (8 oz) package fat free cream cheese, softened • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 1/2 tbsp ranch dry seasoning mix • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or blue cheese) • 1/2 cup Franks Red Hot™ Buffalo Wing Sauce (more or less depending on desired heat) • 1 1/2 cup chicken, cooked and shredded (or pulled) • Veggies and baked crackers for serving Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a small baking dish with non-stick spray. In a bowl, mix together the first 5 ingredients. Add the pulled chicken, and stir until well combined. Spoon mixture into baking dish, and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until dip is warmed through and cheese is melted. Serve warm with celery sticks, carrots, cucumber, bell pepper, or other veggies, and baked crackers.

Mediterranean 5 Layer Dip Ingredients:

• Assorted fruit for serving

• 1 lb hummus (family size)

Directions: Stir together all ingredients until well combined. Serve chilled with berries, grapes, apple slices, or other fruits!

• 1 large red bell pepper • 1/2 english cucumber, diced • 2 roma tomatoes, diced • 3 oz (1/3 cup) feta cheese, crumbled • Serve with baked pita chips/cracker and veggies Optional: • 1/4 cup black olives Directions: In an 8-9 inch round (or square) serving dish, spread the hummus evenly on the bottom of the dish. Layer everything else on top of the hummus. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Serve with toasted whole grain pita or whole grain crackers and sliced veggies.

The TRAINER'S

WANT A FIT BODY? START WITH A HEALTHY MINDSET by Julia Sontag, CSCS

Fitness is so much more than just physical. Our mindset, attitude, and perspective all play an integral role in helping achieve our fitness goals. Read below for tips on having a healthy mindset while on your fitness journey. • E xercise should be fun, beneficial, and enjoyable! If you hate running on the treadmill, try walking up an incline instead. If you get bored sitting on the bike, try the elliptical. If squats bother your knees, try the leg press (or better yet, make an appointment with a personal trainer to help with form and modifications). There are hundreds of exercise options out there. Be creative, listen to your body, and have fun! • There is no magic exercise, magic number of reps, magic number of sets, etc. Elevating your current level of fitness is all about consistency! Working out intensely for a few days and then not returning to the gym for several weeks won’t bring any type of result you are looking for. You have to make fitness a part of your overall healthy lifestyle. It doesn’t have to be an intense, all-or-nothing program. Try to break a sweat 3-5 days a week, and give yourself grace if that doesn’t happen every single week. You’re a human being and you’re doing your best. • Motivation is a myth. If you wait to be motivated to go to the gym, it might never happen. Your body and mind (ego) want to keep you safe, comfortable, and at homeostasis. Working out is hard, and our survival instincts don’t want us to do hard things. Sometimes the most challenging part is simply getting to the gym. Before you talk yourself out of exercising, simply put your shoes on and get in your car. It is best to focus on tiny steps when trying to accomplish a goal rather than getting overwhelmed with the end result. • Don’t view exercise as something you HAVE to do, but as something you GET to do. Working out shouldn’t be punishment for something you ate yesterday. It should be a celebration of your body‘s abilities! Exercise endorphins are real, and staying active has amazing effects on your mood, confidence, and resiliency. You deserve to feel good and to have a healthy mind, body, and soul. You are WORTH it!

NEVER MISS A WORKOUT! We get it, sometimes your workout routine just doesn’t fit in your agenda for the day. Not to worry, your favorite instructors are ready for you 24/7 with the Village Virtual Studio. Never miss a workout again. The TRAINER'S

A PASSION FOR HEALTH AND FITNESS by Tray Ashby-Phan

Tray graduated from Morehead State University with his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Wellness Promotion, which is a mixture of Health Promotion and Exercise Science. He is a former collegiate athlete playing football and running track at the Division 1 level. He is a NASM certified personal trainer and nutrition coach, while also having experience coaching football, track, and cardio kickboxing. He got into personal training at a young age by helping his dad with his clients in gyms and helping him coach football and track. He gained a passion for helping people achieve their fitness goals and loves seeing clients’ confidence grow with each goal met! Tray’s philosophy is that he likes to incorporate many different methods to help people improve their fitness wellbeing with things such as mobility, resistance training, functional movement, and/or cardiovascular exercises. With careful consideration after getting to know his clients, his personalized approach to each client uses their strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes to create workouts that yield results. He has a passion for combining his experience and education to help members reach their fitness goals.

5 Fitness Tips 1. Never make exercise a punishment, but a form of self-care. 2. Strength training is more important than cardio for building muscle. 3. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night is essential for health & fitness goals. 4. Keep track of the exercises and weights/reps/sets you do so you can progress your fitness level. 5. Train your legs they have the largest muscles in your body!
