Welcome

oronavirus has forced people around the world to change the way they live their lives. In Britain we have been spending most of our time at home, attempting to educate our own children and leaving the house only for essential reasons. What has kept us going? With almost half of us (48%) reporting that our well-being has been affected by the coronavirus crisis, unsurprisingly, top of the list is "staying in touch with friends and family". Almost eight in 10 of us (78%) say contacting important people in our lives, over the phone, social media or video conferencing is a key factor in coping, while being at home. 'Zoom' says its global daily users went from around 10 million in December last year to a massive 300 million in April. Talking of being kept in touch with those we love, the video that has made me laugh the most isn’t about toilet paper or online spin classes, but forced family quarantine. It features a serious-sounding narrator describing a hypothetical conundrum. “Because of coronavirus, you are going to be quarantined,” the voice informs a man on camera. “But you have a choice: Do you (a) quarantine with your wife and child, or (b)—” Before the second option is read out, the man interjects: “B,” he says, definitively. “B. B.” Laughing, I showed the video to my wife, who proceeded, somewhat disconcertingly, to laugh even louder before sending it to all her friends. The more we watched it together, the more we laughed together. It made us feel better about the ordeal ahead. It felt a lot better than looking at death graphs. Wonder what will happen this year.... Congratulations to Charley who found all the Winston’s in the last issue and to Joshua and Oliver who found Bear!

CARLISLE’S PAST

S

The ‘Miracle Towns’ in World War One

ir Arthur Conan Doyle, when visiting as a war correspondent, called Gretna and Eastriggs: ‘The Miracle Towns.’ In his newspaper article, for reasons of security, he referred to H. M. Factory Gretna as ‘Moorside. For a factory of this magnitude to be producing Cordite within a year of its inception was indeed a miracle in itself and by reaching its maximum output of 800 tons per week by 1917 surpassed all expectations. Thousands of construction workers, engineers, planners, and scientists created the factory and the township of Gretna. At the same time thousands of ‘Munitions Girls’ were trained up to run the factory. Many of you will have heard of these girls who came from all over the world to carry out this dangerous work. They are remembered at the Devil’s Porridge Museum, Eastriggs.

Gretna Girls

HISTORY

Gretna Girls

Transferring the acid; a nasty task for the girls

Rebecca West painted a very vivid picture of the Munition Girls and of the conditions under which they worked, ‘And it is habited chiefly by pretty young girls clad in a Red Riding Hood fancy dress of khaki and scarlet. Every morning at six, when the night mist still hangs over the marshes, 250 of these girls are fetched by a light railway from their barracks on a hill two miles away. When I visited the works they had already been at work for nine hours, and would work for three more. ….. Indeed, these girls, working in teams of six or seven in those clean and tidy rooms, looking as if they were practising a neat domestic craft rather than a deadly domestic process.’ She further described the process thus, ‘When one is made to put on rubber over shoes before entering a hut it might be

the precaution of a pernickety housewife concerned about her floors, although actually it is to prevent the grit on one’s outdoor shoes igniting a stray scrap of cordite and sending oneself and the hut up to the skies in a column of flame. And there is something distinctly domestic in the character of almost every process. The girls who stand round the great drums in the hut with walls and floor awash look like millers in their caps and dresses of white waterproof, and the bags containing a white substance that lie in the dry ante-room might be sacks of flour. But, in fact, they are filling the drum with gun-cotton to be dried by hot air. And in the next hut, where girls stand round great vats in which steel hands mix the guncotton with mineral jelly, might be part of a steam bakery. The brown cordite paste itself looks as if it might turn into very pleasant honey-cakes’. The construction of the township, the factory, and the lives of these young girl operators is dealt with in the book ‘Moorside’ by Gordon Routledge available from my website www.p3publications.com and various local outlets .

JANE’S KITCHEN

FOOD

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

his time last year, I’m sure none of us knew what was in store for us all, and what a year it has been. We certainly are living in a changed world. In some ways it has slowed us all down and perhaps given us time to do things that we never normally would have had the time for. On the other hand, there are many things we are beginning to miss, one of those being the opportunity to travel and go on holiday. For me one of the highlights of going to another country is trying the different cuisine. Whenever I come home from holiday I am inspired to try new things, however, it doesn’t take long before life takes over again and I get set in my ways. Now I’m not one for Facebook, however, I do have an Instagram page for family and close friends. During the early days of lockdown some friends of mine who have a young family, decided to do a themed night once a week and I was recently looking back at some of their ideas. To name a few they did a ‘Peru’ night, an ‘Indian’ night, a ‘Japanese’ night, an ‘Egyptian’ night and a ‘Tonga’ night. I really looked forward to seeing their weekly adventures.

They would dress the children up in the national costume and prepare food from that land. For example, on the ‘Tonga’ night they cooked everything in an ‘earth oven’. I’ve never seen or heard of that before, but the food looked amazing. I’m hoping they will do more of their themed nights which are so inspiring. So even though we can’t travel for now, with a bit of imagination and good old Pinterest’, we can still enjoy the different cuisines of the world in the comfort of our own homes. And what wonderful memories those children are going to have when they grow up. So sticking with one of my favourite places in the world, this being Italy, why not make this easy Margherita Pizza!

Put 300g strong bread flour in a bowl and add 1tsp instant yeast and 1tsp salt. Make a well in the centre and add 200ml warm water and 1tbsp olive oil. Using a wooden spoon bring it together and then turn out on a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 mins. Cover with a tea towel and set aside for half an hour. For the sauce, mix together 100ml passata, a handful of fresh basil and 1 crushed garlic clove. Season with salt and pepper and again set aside. After half an hour give the dough a quick knead and then split into two balls. On a floured surface roll out the dough into two large rounds, about 25cm across, the dough needs to be very thin as it will rise in the oven. Put the rounds onto two floured baking sheets. Pre-heat the oven to 200C. Smooth the sauce over the dough bases. Scatter the top with a ball of mozzarella that has been sliced, a handful of shaved parmesan, a handful of cherry tomatoes that have been halved and a handful of basil leaves. Bake in a hot oven for 8-10 minutes. Jane ferguson

A nation in lockdown has adorned windows with rainbows and stepped onto doorsteps every Thursday to celebrate the people who are risking their lives by turning up to work. But as the grim reports of deaths from the disease cumulate, along with stories of insufficient protective equipment for staff, there is hope that the crisis will raise awareness and bring change to the way the NHS and its people are treated. At midnight on 5 July 1948, the National Health Service was born with the founding principal to be free at the point of use and based on clinical need rather than on a person’s ability to pay. Over seventy years since its formation, these core principals still hold true, but the world has changed. This book traces the history of our health service, from Victorian healthcare and the early 20th century, through a timeline of change to the current day, comparing the problems and illnesses of 1948 to those we face today.

TRAVEL GUIDE

H

T R AV E L

TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK CAN ADVISE ON HOW TO TRAVEL SAFELY

appy New Year folks. I am so glad that we are now in 2021 and we can put that dreadful year behind us. At time of writing, we’re a week away from Christmas, and my thoughts are turning to setting my upcoming goals for my travel business. Today, though, two good things have happened; Travel Counsellors have been voted top in the British Travel Awards 2020 in the Best National Retailer category. After a very challenging year for us in travel, it is such an honour to be recognised in this way by our clients across the country. The second thing that happened – I took a call from a neighbour today. I gave him some advice earlier in the pandemic about what he needed to submit to help him with a claim against his travel insurance for a cancelled river cruise holiday. Although it has taken months, today he has finally had his claim paid out, and he said if it hadn’t been for what I had told him, he would not have been successful. I think I’ve got myself a new client. Staying with financial matters, some of you might have read reports in the national press about holiday companies and airlines that refused to issue refunds during this crisis and

insisted on clients rebooking, or accepting vouchers. There are companies who have been notoriously bad for this, namely Ryanair and Tui; there are a number of other companies who have not been great, but one of the huge benefits about booking with me is that all my customers

IT'S SUCH AN HONOUR TO BE RECOGNISED IN THIS WAY BY OUR CLIENTS who wanted refunds have had them. Other customers have been happy to rebook for next year, and others have been happy for me to hold their money in our Travel Counsellor trust account. This money is then ringfenced for their future travel. If they subsequently decide they would prefer a refund, that won’t be a problem. I have the odd situation where a supplier has issued a credit voucher, but again that voucher is protected by our financial trust. Another plus point about booking your future travel plans with a travel expert; I get to know you as a person. I find out what your likes and dislikes are, and what your expectations are for your upcoming travel plans. I then tailor it to your requirements. I’m currently

working on a Maldives holiday for a 50th birthday, Dubai for a mother and daughter break, a Yorkshire Dales cottage, a special weekend for a Golden Wedding anniversary, and some advance enquiries for a safari, a trip through Vietnam and a self drive holiday through Atlantic Canada. It’s time to think about those bucket list trips. Don’t put them off any longer. I’m really looking forward to this coming year. I’m looking forward to helping some of you with your travel plans in the coming weeks and months. I'll be there for you every step of the way, keeping your safety and wellbeing at the heart of everything I do. Don’t forget to look out for my virtual travel shows, I advertise them on my FB page, my next one is Costa Rica on 12 January. You might be wondering what my goals are. Simple, to build my business back up again, so thank you in advance if you’re going to help me do that.

Estate Tax Planning in an Economic Downturn the THIRD in a series of bite size articles brought to you by the tax specialists at Saint & Co. Everyone wants to be sure they are passing on the maximum amount possible to their beneficiaries. Ensure you maximise the planning opportunities during the current downturn. Thinking of making a charitable donation in your Will? Charities are currently seeing huge reductions in donations. If donations to charity are included in your Will, as well as giving a benefit to the charity, it may also benefit the beneficiaries of your Estate. If you give 10% of your net Estate then the lower rate of Inheritance Tax of 36% will apply. If a beneficiary’s inheritance is surplus to their requirements, you may be able to pass this on to their children or grandchildren. If you inherit assets and then gift them to other members of your family, this starts the clock ticking for 7 years on this potentially exempt transfer. Meaning for 7 years the asset may still fall within your Estate and be subject to Inheritance Tax. You should consider the use of Deeds of Variation to pass some inheritance onto younger genera-

tions, meaning that any gifts you intended to make are immediately outside your Estate and the 7 year rule does not apply. Timing of income and capital distributions for beneficiaries may be relevant if they are entitled to any means tested benefits during the Covid pandemic An Estate pays income tax on the income received during the period of administration. When an income distribution is made to a beneficiary, it is taxed on them at their marginal rate of tax. A large income distribution in one year could impact your entitlement to means tested benefits. Also the timing of distributions should be considered, even if it means waiting a couple of months till the next tax year to pay less tax. Executors of an estate should claim fall in value relief for share sales at a loss

This reduces the value of the investments for inheritance tax to the value they were sold at, so you pay less Inheritance Tax. Restrictions do apply however, if you then sell some shareholdings at a profit. Fall in value relief is only available on disposals made in the first 12 months of the period of administration. Maximise this relief by only selling loss-making shares, and appropriating out profitable shares to beneficiaries where possible so that this valuable relief isn’t restricted. Similar considerations also need to be given to any properties that are within the Estate. If you’re in the process of dealing with an Estate, let us help you with tax advice We find families who choose to deal with tax on estates themselves without advice often aren’t maximising the amount that’s available to be distributed to the beneficiaries. Whether you’re the executor of the Estate, or a family going it alone, we want to make sure that’s not the case. We have a team of tax specialists on hand to help you digest the complicated rules, and get the best from your situation.

GARDENING

The Future of Gardening

W

Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort

hat will our gardens look like in ten years, or twenty even? Is gardening fundamentally changing, or haven't we noticed? I throw these topical questions in at a time when the horticultural industry of professional growers and gardeners ponder just that. For those not new to gardening the gardening 'year' is remarkably different now to how it was when I started out in the 70s (the 1970s that is in case you were wondering!) Have any of you noticed how long the season has become; the fact that the lawn mower has barely time to be serviced before it is filling up the compost heap with grass cuttings in, well the 'dormant' period? Well I have, so I wasn't surprised when I read an updated report by the Royal Horticultural Society entitled 'Gardening in a Changing Climate'. It is well worth reading even for those with a degree of scepticism. It is of course difficult for anyone to say with any certainty what the future of gardens and gardening will be, but the facts speak for themselves in relation to just how long the season is compared to just a decade ago: it happens to be a month. Actually 29 days according to the industry. Moreover most will have

In each situation there will be challenges but opportunities too. I rather like the idea that at least in East Anglia gardeners might be growing more peaches, olives and noticed that whilst cold winters do almonds. I already encourage people to occasionally manifest themselves, grow more in raised beds, where many years are just wet with control over drainage, not to relatively few days of air frost let alone snow. Lakeland Adventures FELLWALKING ENTHUSIAST STEPHEN ROBSON REFLECTS ON A LABOUR OF LOVE WHICH TOOK FORTY YEARS TO ACHIEVE – COMPLETING ALL 214 WAINWRIGHT FELLS

A

fter many months of exile thanks to Covid 19, I returned to climb a fell in the Lake District with Mike, my fellwalking buddy, who is ten years older than me, but fit as a flea. Or so I thought. It was a summer evening, early August, so still plenty of light available. He fancied climbing Latrigg or Great Mell Fell, but I brow - beat him into tackling Blencathra, via the central ridge. He’d never set foot on Hall’s Fell before, an all time classic walk that becomes a scramble on rock in its higher reaches. I have climbed it many times, once even in the dark-which I would not recommend. Wainwright’s Northern Fells guidebook suggests a starting point in Threlkeld village, we opted instead to begin from a layby on the A66, attaining the base of the fell by trudging through fields and climbing three gates. This could have involved trespassing but there were no warning signs, so, on we went, zig-zagging up through the heather, the dual carriageway and fields soon falling away behind us. The cars looked like models and the sheep little dots, grazing far below. There were quite a few walkers and runners enjoying the

I carried on down, thinking about helicopters and mountain rescue teams, looking back to see him falling far behind exercise and fresh air. The rocky ridge, when it came, seemed sharper and more exposed than I remembered. I was also balancing a tripod with a video camera on top which became more and more of an encumbrance. At times the track was perched high above the Gategill side of the ridge, at other times looking sharply down on Doddick Gill . There were sharp, airy sections to negotiate with little security around...it was just a case of holding your nerve and not hurrying. Mike carried on climbing above me, occasionally advising me on the correct way to go, I sometimes obeyed and other times went my own sweet way, often talking to myself to keep the jitters at bay. The summit lay directly ahead- one of the best features of this walk is that it is virtually impossible to go astray. The view in retrospect was superb; the Helvellyn range seen endways on above Thirlmere, the Lakeland giants towering at the back and Derwentwater to the right. I kept

stopping to sip a drink from my flask. Mike did not. That detail is important...! All of a sudden we were on the summit, an Ordinance Survey ring beneath our feet and Skiddaw in full view out the back. The ridge runs down, over Gategill and Blease fell-tops to the West and over Doddick and Scales fell-tops to the East. There was a cold wind biting so we didn’t delay and set off down. That was when Mike’s problems began. He found the descent quite steep, although Doddick fell is not considered especially so. He opined we should have taken the gently rounded Scales Fell off the mountain. Pretty soon he was falling over and despite the aid of the stick he always carries, found it a real struggle getting back on his feet again. He was also complaining of feeling light-headed. As if all this wasn’t bad enough, the sole was also parting company from his boot. His legs were shaking and he looked awful. I carried on down, thinking about helicopters and mountain rescue teams, looking back to see him falling far behind. It wasn’t all bad- the landscape was suffused in a soft glow as evening fell. We eventually came down through Doddick farmyard- definately a trespass- as darkness settled on the land. Mike fretted half the night away..then realised he’d merely been dehydrated.

ancient Trees LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AND TIPS ON CARING FOR TREES AND SHRUBS • A low, fat and squat shape – because the crown has retrenched (reduced in size) through age • A wide trunk compared with others of the same species • Hollowing of the trunk (not always visible)

What do we mean by ancient? hink of an ancient tree and words that might come to mind are gnarled, knobbly, huge, bent and hollow. These sorts of characteristics are just as important as the actual age of the tree, but the term ancient is applied specifically to trees that are ancient in years. Ancient trees are those which have reached a great age in comparison with others of the same species.

T

How old is an ancient tree? The exact age at which you’d call a tree ancient depends on the species of tree and other factors including the type of site where it’s growing. A birch tree could

be considered as ancient at 150 years old, for example, but an oak tree would not be thought of as ancient until it’s at least 400 years old. Yew trees can live for thousands of years, so are not defined as ancient until they are 800 years old. It is often difficult to estimate how old an ancient tree is, but one method that is used, alongside considering the ancient characteristics, is to measure the girth of the trunk. What does an ancient tree look like? Characteristics of an ancient tree depend on the species, and on factors such as the site and conditions under which they have grown. However, they have three key features:

What is a veteran tree? Unlike an ancient tree, a veteran tree can be any age, but it is a tree which shows ancient characteristics such as those above. These may not just be due to age, but could result from natural damage, management, or the tree’s environment. Ancient trees are all veterans, but not all veterans are ancient. What is a heritage tree? A heritage tree is one that is part of our history and culture, and can be connected with specific historic events or people, such as the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest or the Tolpuddle Martyr’s Tree in Dorset. Other heritage trees may simply have particular appeal because of their appearance, landscape character or architectural setting, and have therefore become well-known landmarks in their local communities. There are also heritage trees such as the Thorpeness Apple, which are valued for their great botanical interest, for example as rare native trees or cultivars of historic interest. What is a notable tree? The term notable tree usually refers to a tree which is significant locally, because it is special or particularly large compared with the trees around it. Notable trees are usually mature, but not always; Wellingtonias for example, can appear to be huge even when quite young. What are champion trees? A champion tree is one which is the tallest, or has the widest girth, of its kind in a specific area. 29
