Welcome

anuary & February, what a hard couple of months these are. No sign of spring just yet and this time of year the country is once again facing it's gravest threat. We the British people must stand strong and united in the face of such a unrelenting invasion! A new varient? No. We are, of course, talking about the couple of days every year, when the entire country loses every fibre of common sense over —snow. For years, us Brits have been portrayed as a bunch of hopeless ninnies who are incapable of functioning as a society as soon as but a single snowflake falls from the sky. And sadly, it’s all true. We behave as if it’s the first time we’ve ever had snow. Will we get the car out? How will we get to work? Headlines like ‘big freeze’ and ‘deep freeze’ lead us to believed we are in for another Little Ice Age. It’s snow shovel and winter coat time, not Doomsday. What puzzles me is that, as the years go by, we are no more prepared for winter weather than we were in previous decades. We still have the usual debates: will they/won’t they grit the roads (with snow forecast it should be a given, but it’s not), will the snow bring traffic to a halt (yes, always), will school boilers be up to the job (no, never), do we need to get our mittens and woolly hats out (only if we face up to the fact that it IS winter)? We need to remember that we live in the Northern Hemisphere - it’s winter and it’s cold. It might snow. You might need to scrape frost off your car and wear your big coat. Congratulations to our Winston winner Jay and to Katie and Rebecca who Andrew Corrie found Bear in Linstock.

HISTORY

when hollywood came to wartime silloth

T

he Second World War changed the look of this little corner of England for ever. Three large airfields were built – at Silloth, Kirkbride and, further north, at Anthorn. Work began on the aerodrome at Silloth in 1938; the site being chosen because of its remoteness from what were expected to be the main operational airfields further south. In April 1940, No. 1 Operational Training Unit of Coastal Command was established there. Its job was to train bomber crews and the Lockheed Hudson was the plane chiefly used. A bombing range was built on the sea banks near Mawbray. Low flying exercises took place over the Solway, using targets placed in the water, and gunners trained using drogues, huge windsocks, towed by old Fairey Battle bombers. There was a continuous stream of young men, most in their early twenties, who passed through the base for training. They came from all parts of the Commonwealth, many from Canada. The toll on these young pilots was high, many crashing into the Solway

off Silloth, which (sadly), became known locally as ‘Hudson Bay.’ The movie “A Yank in the RAF” came out in September 1941, some months before America entered the war. Tyrone Power plays an American pilot who gets a job ferrying bombers from Canada to England. In London, he meets an old flame, Betty Grable, who is working as a show girl in the West End. He joins the R.A.F. to impress her and becomes a bomber pilot. Later, he is transferred to a fighter squadron and

takes part in the evacuation of allied troops from Dunkirk. Many of the flying sequences were filmed at Silloth although the contributions of the big Hollywood stars were obviously filmed in the studios there. There is much more about both World Wars in the book “A Century Around Silloth,” available from my website: p3publications.com, Winters in Silloth, Bookends in Carlisle and Tullie House shop.

FOOD

JANE’S KITCHEN

T

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

here is an old saying ‘If you look after the pennies, the pounds will look after themselves’ which means if you concentrate on saving small amounts of money, you’ll soon amass a large amount. I was recently reminded of this saying when talking to a dear friend of mine who very recently lost his mother. It turned out his mum loved a bargain. The family would tell her to treat herself and not worry about finding a bargain, but she was old school and never changed. I remember having a conversation with her myself years ago about one particular shopping trip. A certain supermarket had a voucher offer, and if you were canny enough and used the voucher in conjunction with foods that had been reduced (the yellow stickers!) you could end up with the supermarket owing you money, and that actually happened to my friend’s mum. It was the ultimate shopping trip for her. I think soon after this, the voucher offer ended! It brought to mind memories of my own grandmother, she too was

old school. Rather than buy a loaf of bread from the corner shop, she would get the bus with her free bus pass, and go five miles to a large superstore for her bread as it was cheaper to buy from there. Maybe we can all learn a lesson from these ones. I know I can. For example, if I needed a pint of milk and there were two shops even side by side, a large superstore and a small corner shop, I know for a fact that I would pay the extra and go in the small shop as the thought of going in a large store for a pint of milk is exhausting! Maybe in future I will think twice.

As you probably know from reading my column I am not one for wasting food and love it when I find a recipe that uses leftovers. I recently made this Ham, Cheese and Potato Pie using some leftover ham I had. Boil 350g new potatoes in salted water until tender but still firm (about 10 minutes). Leave to cool then slice. Heat your oven to 200c/180c fan or gas 6. Unroll 375g ready rolled puff pastry and put on a greased baking tray. Spread 100g crème fraiche on to the pastry, leaving a 2cm border around the edge. Season with salt and pepper. Layer the potatoes, 50g sliced ham, and 125g brie cheese over half of the pastry seasoning as you go. Fold over the other half of the pastry and seal the edges. Trim with a knife. Brush the pastry with milk, make a few cuts in the top, and bake for 35-40 minutes. Leave to cool for 10 minutes and serve with bread and salad. Jane ferguson

Obesity is a Disease WRITTEN BY STUART EDGAR [oscar pet foods]

t's that time of year again when we think about our waistlines and the extra calories we consumed over the festive period. But what about our four-legged pooches? Have they also enjoyed a treat too many? An extra Christmas dinner? Visitors feeding goodies? With over half the UK dog population currently overweight and the added extra pounds consumed over the festive period who will help with their growing bulge? Did you know that obesity is classed as a disease in dogs? It can shorten lifespan and lead to many other diseases such as arthritis, breathing difficulties, diabetes and certain types of cancer - to name but a few. So, what can we do? • Diet: If your dog is slightly overweight then feeding an appropriate diet with reduced calories and increased fibre such as OSCAR High Fibre Lite is important. Make sure you are feeding for the weight the dog should be, and not its current weight. • Measure: It is important, especially during weight loss, that the amount of food fed is exactly the same every day. Weigh food daily for the

exact food ration as studies show that measuring cups can be inaccurate. • Interactive Feeders: Using a slow-down bowl or interactive feeder will mentally and physically stimulate your dog. It is more interesting than feeding from a bowl and encourages them to work for each meal and burn calories whilst eating! • Exercise: Enjoy plenty of time together out walking, playing at home and in the garden. If your dog is very obese, start off very gradually and seek veterinary advice. • Regular weight and BCS: Ensure the dog’s weight and Body Condition Score (BCS) are regularly checked. • Treats: Avoid high calorie rewards. If you really have a special treat you want to give them, cut back a small amount of their daily food to allow for it. All extra calories from treats will be stored as fat in the body. • Food diary: Use a daily diary to record all the food the dog is currently being fed. This encourages all family members to be part of the dog’s routine and may reveal some extra food that you didn't know was being eaten! Let’s make this New Year the time to set a resolution for our dogs - making their future a healthier, happier and slimmer one!

pairs wonderfully with red meats, etc. If it’s a rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé will not disappoint, having grapes grown on ‘floating vineyards’ and at the Monsoon Valley Vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose, excellent mouthfeel and palate. A wine that is extremely popular, with many, on numerous occasions. If a Shiraz is required, for satisfaction, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz, from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine. Fantastic with red meats. For an aromatic, sweet wine, Chenin Blanc Dessert Wine (flagship) ‘ticks all the boxes’, for me. Having Chenin Blanc grapes, left on the vines for several days more, ensures provision of the added sugars required to produce this impressive delight, which gives a grand finish. As always, Enjoy! TRAVEL GUIDE TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK CAN ADVISE ON HOW TO TRAVEL SAFELY

H

ello 2022! Whatever this new year has in store for me, I am starting the year full of positivity. 2021 was certainly very challenging for a number of reasons, but it did have some good bits too. My absolute highlight was a recent visit to Tromso in the far north of Arctic Norway for a weekend packed full of winter activities. The weekend saw us feeding reindeer, engaging with the local Sami indigenous people, seeing the Northern Lights, but the best bit for me was setting off through the snowy landscape on a sled being pulled by husky dogs, with my husband as the musher!! A beautiful setting, with so many fabulous memories. 2021 saw my best year to date, my business is now 4 years old. Happy birthday to me. I’ve acquired a lot of new clients during the course of the pandemic, and all clients who have travelled have done so in the knowledge that I’ve been there for them from start to finish. They’ve loved being able to travel, spending time with family and loved ones, reconnecting with family members, and creating those special memories. Yes, the form filling and the

tests are a hassle, but I’ve made it as stress free as possible for everyone. Thank you for your support during what has been a difficult time with the constant changes to advice, red lists, and a new variant emerging. A new year makes me think about how I might do things differently. I want to focus on making my travel business more sustainable. The pandemic has made us all think differently about things. Travel has to be responsible and it has to be sustainable if the industry is to have any future at all, and I very much want to be part of that. There are many ways of doing this, from thinking about how we travel when we go on holiday, to where we stay on holiday, supporting local community

From January 2022 for every booking that contains a flight, I will be making a financial contribution from my profits to the right carbon offsetting programme. I want to do my bit, and make sure we don't ruin this planet for future generations. As ever, I’m here with the latest advice and I’ll make your travel as stress free as possible. More and more people are wanting to use the services of a trusted travel professional. You might be able to book things cheaper on the internet, but you won’t get the service. Tax Planning for Overseas Property guidance on tax for overseas rental income

I

f you own an overseas property which you let out, don’t forget that you need to report the income and pay UK tax on the rental profits and UK capital gains tax on the sale of the property. However, there are tax planning opportunities which can reduce the tax payable. It should be possible to claim the cost of travelling to the property as a business expense under the business expense rules. Don’t forget that there are likely to be local taxes as well as tax in the country where your property is situated. However, there are double taxation agreements with many

overseas countries which will ensure that your property income is only taxed either in the UK or the overseas country. It is essential to check the relevant agreement to ensure tax is being paid in the correct country. It would also be advisable to engage a tax specialist in the country where the property is situated. Many overseas countries impose some form of wealth tax on overseas individuals who own property in their country. One way to reduce this may be to take out a loan to buy the property. Even if you have the capital to purchase the property this can be good planning as the value of the

property is reduced for wealth tax planning, any loan interest will be eligible as a tax reducer at 20% or a tax deduction if rented out as a qualifying furnished holiday let; meaning the capital which you had can be invested elsewhere. Don’t forget that there may be VAT charged on the property. If so consider leasing your property to an hotel operator in the country your property is situated. If structured correctly it should then be possible to reclaim the VAT. For capital gains tax purposes if the foreign property is used as a home by you for part of the year, it may be beneficial to elect for your foreign home to be nominated as your principal private residence. This would then exempt some or all of the gain from UK capital gains tax. However, there could be potential downsides to this especially if you are thinking of selling your UK property. The figures need to be worked out to quantify any benefit. As ever with tax, it is never straight forward, but using our specialist tax experts and planning in advance, owning a property abroad can be a great adventure.

Great Books on Gardening

S

Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort

uch is the plethora of books on gardening and the environment there is surely something for everybody. In fact, some of my favourite books on gardens, trees and the history of gardening might even appeal to those friends of yours who couldn’t really be described as horticulturally inclined! Gardening trends come and go, but awareness of the natural world and the place of gardening in it has risen in recent years. Gardening is big business in the publishing world, and the list of new titles is almost endless. The big names are generally those that populate our TV screens, but I think there are a few gems that stand out – some of which have been around a while. I was recently asked if I had a favourite gardening book. Perhaps someone wanted to buy me a present, or perhaps they needed a good recommendation; I couldn’t tell at the time, but it got me thinking… To say that one of my favourite gardening books has been around a while would be an understatement! ‘The Gardener’s Labyrinth’ was first published in 1577! It could be described as the first practical gardening book written in the English language. It is a marvellous exposition of how the Elizabethan Garden came of age, and its author Thomas Hill

Winter – A great time to plant new trees! LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AND TIPS ON CARING FOR TREES AND SHRUBS

Y

ou might be thinking Spring or Summer would be optimal seasons to plant and nurture a new tree, as these are the seasons that we see lots of growth and when we give more attention to our gardens. Whilst it is possible to grow new trees in these warmer months, planting a new tree during November through March will give it a better chance to thrive. In the colder months, trees go into a state of dormancy, meaning they pause from actively growing like they do throughout the warmer months, when we see them outwardly flourishing with beautiful leaves, berries, acorns, and flowers.

This means, during the Winter all the tree’s energy can go into growing below the ground rather than above - into expanding its root system. Water is a key ingredient in helping the roots to grow and as the months of November through to March are generally wetter months, the soil is kept in the perfect moist conditions to support slow growing and establishing of a strong root base. If you plant in the Summer, you will need to be very diligent in watering your new tree daily, sometimes twice a day. Planting in the Winter means less maintenance. In the UK you can purchase rootballed trees throughout the

Winter, which are great options for planting new trees. Rootballed trees are where the tree’s root system has been wrapped up in the soil surrounding the roots into non-galvanised wire mesh and hessian sheet bags, making a solid root ball. These can be planted straight away into the ground with the wire mesh and biodegradable bag still in place. Another great reason to plant in the winter, is lack of competition for the nutrients in the soil. Other plants and shrub are becoming dormant, weeds have also died off providing your new tree more of the water and nutrients is desperately needs. Different trees do have different needs so always read and follow the instructions for your type of tree to give it the best chance of survival. If you take advantage of the cooler months to plant a new tree, by the time the Spring comes around next year, your tree will have a substantial base of roots and be ready to thrive!
