ccording to research, part of the aging process involves shrinkage and weight gain whilst our happiness increases. That’s quite enough about me, but as Village Link reaches it’s 51st issue it’s no surprise it has shrunk a bit and gained some weight. Happily, we are truly bucking the trend by expanding our magazine at a time when overall paper advertising is declining in this digital age. The Village Link continues to be a family owned magazine, with my wife Michaela being the brains behind the whole operation. Nothing is too much trouble for us and there is always a friendly voice on the end of the phone, unless you ring me while I’m having my tea. The Village Link is seen by and talked about by our advertisers and readers alike and is relied upon by many as a source of contact for reliable, reputable trades and businesses. We hope you like the new format as much as we do, and we look forward to dropping a Village Link on your doormat for years to come. Don’t forget – if you wish to donate or submit a short article on any local interest topic or write about a special local person, please continue to send these to us by email to editor@village-link.co.uk. Last issue was packed with competitions – and here is a list of the Winners: Lynn McIntyre who won the amazing crossword prize thanks to Boyd Hair and Beauty. Rebecca Routledge is off to see Sigala at Carlisle Racecourse. Well done to young Oliver who found Bear in Cumwhitton and congratulations to Tyler who found all the Winston’s.

CARLISLE’S PAST
HISTORY
MARY JANE LONGSTAFF – A LIFE-LONG LOVE AFFAIR WITH SNAILS
I
written by david ramshaw
have recently published ‘Cumbrian Ancestors Unwrapped’, which features characters such as George Moore of Wigton (Philanthropist and millionaire), William Henry Gibson (fraudster and survivor, transported to Australia) and Mary Jane Longstaff (nee Donald) 1855-1935 (a life-long love affair with snails). Here, I give a brief synopsis of her story. Mary was the daughter of Matthewman, principal partner in the Carlisle cotton enterprise of Donald Brothers. She devoted her entire life to the study of snails, land and freshwater snails, living and fossil. She was brilliant in her field and delightfully eccentric. Behind her childhood home (Albert Villa), high on Stanwix Bank, lay an area of land which had long lain undisturbed. Jane was an acutely observant little girl, and here was a pocket paradise which she could explore in solitude and safety. Following her education in London, Jane enrolled on a course at the Carlisle School of Art. There she developed the artistic skills needed to illustrate her own papers which were published as Gasteropoda Recent and Fossil. Jane devoted herself to a tiny corner of the 65,000
Mary Jane Longstaff
species classified as Gastropods. She was totally absorbed. By the time Jane was 27, she had produced a comprehensive survey of the land and freshwater snails of Cumberland, presenting a paper to the Cumberland Association for the Advancement of Literature and Science in 1882. This, of course, was read for her by a man! Despite her slow ascendancy as a scientist, it would be a long while before women were accepted as equal to men. She became a member of the Geologists’ Association in 1883; a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1906, and was one of the first group of ladies to be accepted as Fellows of the Geological Society of London in 1919.
Jane travelled all over the county by train, horse and the family gig. Her meticulous handwritten notes tell of the discovery of fine specimens of Planorbis on dead leaves at Corby. Triumphantly she recorded an Arion at 3,192 feet near the summit of Ben Lomond. A Limax wandered into the cellar of Albert Villa, under her very nose. A rare Helix gave itself up at Furness Abbey. In all, Jane recorded 75 species in Cumberland, 7 in Westmorland, and an appendix to her work carried details of a further 20 or so. In 1885 Jane was strongly influenced by John George Goodchild of the Geological Survey who turned her attention to the fossilised inhabitants of the carboniferous period. There followed the publication of twenty papers on these long-dead wanderers whom she first discovered around Penton and Mosedale. In 1898 the prestigious Murchison Award was granted to Jane Donald. In later life, after her marriage, she travelled widely, working as enthusiastically as ever, publishing, at the age of 78, ‘British Carboniferous Loxionematidae with Descriptions of New Forms’. Honeysuckle HOUSE
B
aking is my passion. I come from a farming background so there was always someone baking something somewhere! Honeysuckle House came about following the death of my mum. I found that baking helped me to cope with the incredible sadness I felt, but my husband and I couldn’t eat everything that I’d made so my friends became eager recipients. They all told me I should sell it but I didn’t want to open a coffee shop or anything like that but I’ve always had this idea of ‘afternoon tea at home’. I love afternoon tea! It’s so decadent, and what could be nicer than gathering your nearest and dearest together in your own home to enjoy this delicacy? Delivered to your door, set up in a vintage style, and you don’t even have to do the washing up! Baking makes me happy and I hope my baking will make you happy too!

FOOD
JANE’S KITCHEN
I
Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson
was recently reminded of a song that you may be familiar with. The song is based on a letter from a young camper who begs his parents to take him home from summer camp which is called ‘Camp Granada’. At the start of the song it says, ‘and they say we’ll have some fun if it stops raining’. He then goes on to describe the horrors of being at summer camp. The last verse however, goes – ‘wait a minute, it’s stopped hailing, guys are swimming, guys are sailing, playing baseball, gee that’s better, mother, father kindly disregard this letter’. How true that is. The weather can affect our mood no end, well it does mine. If it’s cloudy and grey, I feel fed up and not motivated at all, but the minute the sun comes out my spirits are lifted and I again feel motivated to get on. And I think here in England we are doubly obsessed with the weather, mainly because we can’t trust it from one day to the next, or in fact from the morning to the evening. For example, it’s difficult to plan in advance BBQ’s or outdoor events because we cannot trust the weather. Instead, we have to do impromptu BBQ’s when
we get a nice day. Having said that impromptu and last minute events more often than not turn out to be the best. So let’s make the most of those sunny days and have our BBQ’s at the ready just in case. Staying with a BBQ theme, I have a beef burger recipe that I have had for years which is my go to recipe. This recipe came from a programme I saw years ago whereby a famous chef (Gordon Ramsay) saved some failing business. The recipe is called ‘Lela’s Famous Burgers’. In a bowl put 1lb ground beef, 1½ tsp Dijon mustard, few splashes of Worcester sauce, 2 egg yolks, 3 tbsp tomato ketchup, 1 medium red onion finely chopped and salt and pepper to taste. Bind the whole lot together with your hands. With wet hands

gently shape each portion into a loose round ball, then flatten each ball into a patty with a thickness of between ¾ and 1 inch. Then get a spoon or use your thumb to create a shallow well in the middle of each patty. This will prevent the patty from developing a domed top whilst cooking. Heat your grill to a medium heat. Put the burger on the heat and cook for 4 minutes before turning over. Resist the urge to press them down with a spatula. Also you should only turn your burgers once or twice during cooking. Make sure your burgers are cooked through before serving, As a guide the inside of your burgers should be 160˚ before eating. When your burger is ready to eat put it in a bun with fresh tomatoes and lettuce. These burgers are well worth making with very little effort. Jane ferguson

savings habit Ian Forth and Christine Lloyd run the local branch of The Furness Building Society in Brampton
T
he Furness Building Society was established in 1865, and originally began by playing a vital role for those in what is now South Cumbria and Furness peninsula, by helping them buy their own homes and providing a safe, solid and secure home for their savings. We may have been around for over 150 years but we are a modern, forward thinking building society that is committed to remaining independent and mutual. We are a truly independent and mutual building society and mutuality is simply about putting our members first. Unlike banks and converted building societies, The Furness Building Society has no shareholders that it needs to pay dividends to. This means we can pass on more of the profit we make in the form of better rates of interest, innovative products and efficient and friendly service. Whilst The Furness Building Society has a strong traditional background, our future will be based on our children of today. There are three very attractive accounts including a Junior Cash ISA, Young Saver Account and most recently the Pocket Money Saver. The Pocket Money Saver, is an exciting new regular savings account that will begin the habit of putting some money away each week or month. When they open their account, they will be given a special savings wallet and activity book which has a page where they can collect a sticker each time they save £10. When they have 10 stickers they will be given a “FurryNess” and there are 3 “FurryNess’s” to collect. The earlier children appreciate
written by IAN FORTH
The earlier children appreciate the ‘value’ of money, the better the “value” of money, the better. This will set them up well for the future. It is said that everyone could (and should) save at least 10% of their current income. Most people do not and very often, as a result of today’s world of “have today, pay tomorrow,” this is because a “savings habit” has not been formed in the early years when money first starts to cross our palms. Ian said, he remembers when he was young, his pocket money would be on the mantle-piece every Saturday morning. The first task was to put an amount into his savings box (which had teeth on the inside so you could not get
the money out!), he could spend the rest. Every now and then the savings box would be taken to be emptied and put into a savings account which could not be touched. The “savings habit” was started early and has stayed with him throughout his life and now he runs the Brampton Agency for the Furness. Ian and Christine have spent years helping, showing and advising others how to organise their finances, income and outgoings, dependant on their individual circumstances. Over recent months, The Furness Building Society have either transferred funds or printed cheques for many £100’s and in some cases £1,000’s from children’s accounts (now late teenagers/early adults!) to pay for holidays, computers, cars, deposits on homes and much more. Many of these accounts were first opened by Mums and Dads, Grandmas and Grandads, almost as soon as the joy of their new baby boy or girl had been born. Ian, Christine and Nicola would be very happy to help Parents and Grandparents open appropriate accounts for their children and grandchildren and start their loved ones on the path to the “savings habit.” Why not give them a call on 016977 3787 or just pop in for a tea or coffee to discuss what would suit you best.

The ongoing debate about Brexit has meant that many people are not looking to holiday in Europe this summer. In the industry, we’re in the period known as ‘Lates’, ie late availability and there’s plenty of it right throughout Europe. At time of going to press, there are some great deals for villas with private pools throughout mainland Europe, Balearic Islands, Greek Islands right through the summer holidays, ideal for a couple wanting to do their own thing, or a family who want some quality time together. People like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust
attractions, theatre tickets, and unique experiences. I’ll provide the airlines with all your relevant passport information. I check you in, and upload boarding cards to the MyTC travel app if that’s what you want me to do. All you have to do is turn up and enjoy yourselves, wherever that may be. I even provide travel insurance, airport parking, airport hotels, train tickets. My existing clients really value the personal service and attention to detail. You can’t get that online. My service doesn’t just stop when you book your holiday with me, it carries on during your holiday, and when you return. I sort things out on the rare occasion when things don’t quite go to plan. You can carry on with your travels, knowing that I’m looking after things in the background. If you want a personal service, and don’t have the time, or can’t be bothered to do lots of trawling through websites where sometimes you may not have full financial protection, or you don’t know what you’re getting, please give me a try. You won’t regret it. Short break, cruise, safari, trip of a lifetime, cottage in Scotland with your dog, Uk, Europe, Worldwide. Anything’s possible. Everything is bespoke. Small Trees
G
LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AND TIPS ON CARING FOR TREES AND SHRUBS
iven that many of us have limited space in our gardens, it becomes important that any trees chosen are right for their surroundings, in terms of proportion as well as for their decorative value. There are many factors to take into consideration when choosing a tree for a small garden. Here are some of the more important ones: Height and spread: This is probably the most important factor. Even small ornamental trees may, over time, reach a height of 6-8m (20-26ft) or more. If this is too much, consider a weeping form, as these rarely increase much in height, or choose a large shrub. If spread is a problem, such as in a very restricted area, consider a columnar tree, as these do not spread appreciably Season of interest: Consider when you want your tree to look good, thinking about flowering time, foliage, fruit and bark. If you only have room for one tree ideally look for one with more than one season of interest such as fruit or autumn colour following on from flowers Deciduous or evergreen: Both
“Many people worry about planting a tree close to a property, and there can be risks in doing so” types of trees have their advantages, the obvious one for evergreens being that they keep their leaves throughout the year. But many deciduous trees provide lovely autumn foliage colours not available with evergreen trees Trees for specific locations: Containers - Trees in containers will dry out far more quickly than those growing in the ground and will need regular watering. Several waterings may be needed

to ensure the full depth of the compost is moistened. Often the overhanging foliage of plants in containers shields the compost from the rain. Keep the compost moist, but not wet, at all times, even during winter when compost can dry out quickly in wind. In hard water areas, use rainwater for watering ericaceous plants wherever possible, with tap water as a back-up option. Wet Soils - Improve drainage at the base of the planting hole by forking through any compacted soil. Fork through the sides of the planting hole or break down the sides into the planting hole when backfilling. This avoids creating a planting ‘bucket’ or sump which fills with water: a problem that can lead to poor establishment or the death of the tree. On heavy soils prone to winter wet, protect the finer surface feeding roots by planting trees on a slightly raised mound to improve drainage around the root system and carry out the planting in early spring. Trees and buildings: Many people worry about planting a tree close to a property, and there can be risks in doing so. For more information see our trees near buildings profile To avoid planting a tree too large for the site, it may help to draw a scale plan of your garden and plot the size of your tree at maturity. If planting in the corner of your garden, be aware that most of the canopy will shade neighbouring gardens. To help you choose, you may find it useful to visit gardens where a good range of well-established and mature ornamental trees can be seen and evaluated. Any further queries or information, please give us a call.

Robert Southey, who was born in Bristol and buried in the churchyard of Crosthwaite Parish Church in Cumbria, was the first to write a Robin Hood novel in 1791, but it was never published. Robin Hood: The Life and Legend of an Outlaw is the first time it’s ever been discussed at length. Find out who historians think was the real Robin Hood, including Southey, and see the various twists and turns that the legend has taken over time. Profusely illustrated with images from medieval manuscripts, early modern books, and Victorian penny dreadfuls. RRP: £19.99 · 176 PAGES · HARDBACK

Slimming WORLD SLIMMING-WORLD CONSULTANT RACHEL DAWKINS IS CELEBRATING HER FIFTEENTH YEAR IN THE ROLE
W
ednesday night 7pm , 30th June 2004. I nervously awaited new members walking through the door of Harraby Community Centre as I opened my first Slimming World group. Having been inspired to lose weight myself over 2 stone - and keeping it off since I discovered Slimming World, I decided to take the plunge and open my own group. Over 40 members joined that night. Fast forward 15 years, and I’m now running 4 groups, with 6 sessions - looking after and supporting up to 400 members weekly. Throughout those 15 years, I have shared in so many successes - being awarded Gold status as a consultant and sharing the stage with various celebrities at our annual award ceremonies in Birmingham. However, beyond any glitz and glamour, there are real people, ordinary people changing their lives. I’ve seen members reduce medications for high blood pressure, asthma and diabetes as well as preparing for surgery. Members can be referred via their GP or health professional for a free 12 week course.

Food Optimising is the most generous, most liberating and most effective way to lose weight. It’s helped millions of people to lose weight without ever going hungry or feeling deprived. Our warm and friendly groups are where the magic happens and I’ve seen members build lifelong friendships that go beyond weight loss. Groups held at Harraby Community Centre each week on Tuesdays at 10am, 5pm and 7pm and on Wednesdays at 9.30am, 5pm and 7pm. If losing weight is something that interests you, come along to one of my groups or if you’d like any further information, contact me on 07734356537. 24

O
f all the locations in the Lake District that appeal to me in a variety of ways, my favourite place to be is, without question, when I am making my way (very carefully) along the south traverse of Great Gable. Carefully; because the terrain is very rocky, with great crags towering overhead and steep drops down to the beck far below – a hostile, vertiginous zone, one that tender-footed walkers would do well to stay away from. It is a quiet route, not very apparent when it commences, just south of the stretcher box at Sty Head. Two other tracks confuse the issue hereabouts; one climbs straight up Great Gable by what is known as the Breast route, the other descends to the Wasdale valley, ours sits between the two, heading up and across the slope, taking in a wonderful view of the Scafell range just off to the left. Great End, Ill Crag, Broad Crag, Scafell Pike, Scafell and the outlier Lingmell are all seen in detail, whilst ahead the first notable crag, Kern Knotts makes its presence increasingly felt. This huge slab of rock is split by two fissures, the Innominate and Kern Knotts Cracks, both providing challenging climbs (for rockclimbers only, I hasten to add!) The path here is quite hard
“A hostile, vertiginous zone, one that tender footed walkers would do well to stay away from” to follow; weaving alongside and often on top of a jumble of huge boulders that have at some time parted company from the parent crags above. Ahead, across a gulf of distance and higher up the slope, sits Tophet Bastion, a massive lump of rock that is the forerunner of the Great Napes ridges. This is preceded by a massive scree - shoot entitled, not very encouragingly, Great Hell Gate. The Napes are a massive wall of crags that sit full in the sun on the south face of Great Gable. They soar, vertically at first, towards a small neck of

land that connects them to Westmorland Crags, just below the summit of Great Gable. From left to right the main walls of rock are the Sphinx ridge, so named because of a rock there that resembles a cat or a Sphinx, depending on the angle of observation. Next is the Arrowhead ridge, a-topped by, yes, you’ve guessed it, an arrowhead - shaped peak of stone. Next along is Eagle’s Nest Ridge, then Needle Ridge, so called because of the icon of the Lake District that is Napes Needle, that sits at its base. The Tophet wall ends the crag, with the fang - like Hell Gate Pillar, standing on the stone shoot of Great Hell Gate. What a sight they are close up, quickening the pulse and drying the mouth! When I was last there, two cragsmen were perched on the right hand shoulder of the Needle. I clambered up to the aptly named dress circle, alongside, to watch their final ascent. There was a stiff breeze and verticality everywhere but it was a privilege to be in close proximity. Two others were high above on Needle ridge, a neck - straining experience to witness. At the far left hand side of the Great Napes is the scree - run of Little Hell Gate, which separates them from the White Napes, that has no crags of distinction. And there the excitement ends. The track descends to Beck Head which joins Gable and the unattractive bulky Kirk Fell. On the north face of the mountain sits Gable Crag mostly in shadow except for summer evenings. A short ascent links up with Windy Gap which marks the start of the long slope of Aaron Slack back down to Sty Head. 25
