ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

I

t’s certainly been a long, cold winter. We’ve had wind, snow, sleet, and even an earthquake. It’s fair to say that we’ve had to get our “big coat” on a few times. We’ve endured months of cold, dark, rainy morning journeys to work – followed by cold, dark, rainy evening journeys home from work. Most of us are probably quite ready at this point to say a not-so fond farewell to winter, and fortunately there isn’t too long to wait. There are two differing ‘official times’ for when spring starts, and depending on which definition you go by, it might be longer than you’d hoped. According to the Meterological calendar, spring starts on March 1st. This is fixed every year based on our Gregorian calendar, so every year this season starts at the beginning of March and ends on May 31st. After that will be summer, which lasts from the start of June through to the end of August. Then Autumn, which constitutes September, October, and November. Then back to winter again from the start of December until next year’s spring. But, if you go by the astronomical calendar, spring won’t begin until March 20th. This calendar looks at earth’s orbit around the sun. Spring starts on the vernal equinox in this calendar. [An equinox is the moment the plane of the earth’s equator passes through the centre of the sun’s disk and occurs

twice a year – once at the start of Spring and once at the start of Autumn - thank goodness for google!] The spring will end, based on this calendar, on the summer solstice (when the sun appears to reach its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere) around June 21st, the longest day, then it’s all downhill from this point towards winter. But whichever way you look at it, and whichever calendar you study, us Brits are great at forcing winter to end just by pretending it isn’t winter anymore. As soon as March 1st rolls around (and in spite of the inevitable icy, howling gales) we insist that it’s warm enough for a picnic, and just go for it. Congratulations to last issues competition winners: Ruby [winner of ‘Find Winston’], Marion and Imogen [who rescued Bear from Brampton] and Alison Watson [who won the book, Carlisle in the Great War]. Thanks again to all our advertisers, and of course to you, our dear reader.

FOOD

TEA LOAF Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

W

e Brits love a cup of tea, and are fussy with it too. When you ask someone if they would like a cup of tea, you always get added instructions ie. just a drop of milk; or, just dip the tea bag in and take it straight out, etc. Personally I like my tea quite milky and hate it when I am just given a drop of milk. I always have to ask for extra milk in café’s as these days they give you milk in the tiniest of jugs. I need about three of those for a good cup of tea. On the other hand what’s with the humongous mugs you get in some popular café’s, one of those would keep me going all day! Happy medium guys, happy medium! It’s crazy to think that at one time tea was extremely expensive. We have all seen tea caddies on antique shows and told how tea was kept under lock and key so that the servants couldn’t get at it. I read somewhere that when the lower classes finally were able to drink tea they added a lot of milk to it as milk was cheaper

and it was a way of enjoying a cup of tea (maybe that’s why I like a lot of milk, I know my place!!). I also read that milk was added because tea was drunk in china cups and it was a way of cooling it down so that the cup wouldn’t break. I’m not sure how true either of these stories are but whatever the truth is most of us drink tea with milk, which I have found to be a real British thing. When I visit my daughter in Canada and ask for a cup of tea when we are out, they want to know what kind of tea I want (there are so many) and it never comes with milk. For your information in case you are ever visiting Canada, the nearest tea to English tea is called Orange Pekoe. Here’s another question, should the milk go in before you add the tea or after? I could go on

and on but I’ll leave that one with you! Sticking with my tea theme, how about making a good old fashioned tea loaf. It’s fat free which is an added bonus for all those of us trying to be good. Pre-heat oven to 180˚c. Steep 280g raisins in 300ml strong hot tea for about 30 minutes. In a separate bowl add 340g sieved SR flour, 110g sugar, and 1 teaspoon ground allspice. Add the cooled down tea mixture to the dried ingredients together with 1 beaten egg and stir in gently, don’t over mix it. Line a loaf tin and add the mixture to it. Bake for about 1 hour. Leave to cool and enjoy a slice (buttered if you feel like being naughty). And what better way to accompany it than with a nice cup of tea.

PEARL OF WISDOM Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford, is reputed to have originated the idea of afternoon tea in the early 1800s. She conceived the idea of having tea around four or five in the afternoon to ward off the hunger pangs between lunch and dinner. Some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread.

WATCHTREE NATURE RESERVE

O

nly a few miles to the west of Carlisle, Watchtree Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife, with accessible footpaths and trails leading through wetlands, woodlands, flower meadows and scrub. Open to the public it is a haven to over 60 species of birds and home to mammals such as brown hare, fox and roe deer plus a large variety of amphibians and invertebrates such as moths, butterflies, dragonflies and beetles. It is a magical place to observe wildlife. Information boards around the reserve intrigue and inspire young and old alike whilst in the visitor centre there is always a friendly face to answer any questions and the Watchtree Café serves hot drinks, homemade and tray bakes and a selection of sandwiches. Watchtree was created in 2002 on the site of the former Great Orton WW2 Airfield. Between February and July 2001 the area was used to bury farm livestock killed during the Foot and Mouth Disease. When this stopped the overwhelming view of people from the Local Community who responded to a consultation was that it should be turned into a nature reserve. It was named Watchtree as this was the name of the farm that occupied the site before it was developed as an airfield in 1942. Watchtree Nature Reserve Ltd was created in August 2004 as a Not For Profit Company to manage and develop public access to the reserve.

“No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.” David Attenborough Since it’s opening in 2004 Watchtree has gone from strength to strength. In 2013 around 10,000 people visited the reserve but by 2018 this had risen to over 40,000. Schools, children’s holiday clubs and youth groups regularly make use of the site, whilst cyclists make frequent use of safe cycle-ways and specially adapted equipment for those requiring it. The Watchtree Wheelers are active on a weekly basis running cycling events for beginners and the experienced whilst the monthly 5k and 10k trail runs are now a regular on many local runners calendars. Over this winter the reserve’s volunteer army has been carrying out habitat management work in the woodlands, hedge laying and repairing paths ahead of another busy season. An army of practical outdoor volunteers has met every Wednesday at 10am - new faces are always welcome! Volunteers have also run the café and other facilities. The reserve is open every day and as spring approaches the program of family events gets into full swing. This includes school holiday kids clubs and guided walks focusing on specific areas or species within the reserve. You can keep up to date with what’s on at Watchtree via the reserve’s website and Facebook page.

Becoming a parent is just about the biggest event in anyone’s life, bringing with it a raft of challenges and unforeseen scenarios that potentially pose the sternest of tests.

F

or Paloma Faith, the experience of being a new mum may have left her wondering where her next night’s sleep might ever be coming from, yet it’s brought a renewed sense of purpose and focus to her music. “I’m trying to juggle being a mother and a singer. I have no idea how I am managing, but I am somehow,” she laughs, recounting her whirlwind existence recording her fourth studio album. The 36-year old Londoner has already amassed an enviable career over the past decade that has seen her become the only female artist beyond Adele to have three double platinum recordings to her name. The singer’s latest offering, The Architect, follows boldly in its predecessors’ footsteps, showcasing her distinctive powerful vocals that have earned comparisons with everyone from 60’s icons such as Etta James and Billie Holiday, through to the late Amy Winehouse. It seems the singer is enjoying a comparatively settled phase of her life living with French boyfriend Leyman Lahcine, and it’s apparent that starting a family has directly influenced her music. “I do feel my approach to music has changed since I’ve become a parent - which does have an impact. With difficult things that are happening in the world, you feel protective and want to make things comfortable for your family. I think things are changing in our history and maybe not for the better, which is something I’m concerned about. I feel there’s a sense of duty to talk about events.” While her towering vocal abilities have continued to garner contrasts with the late Amy Winehouse, it’s something Paloma is entirely at ease with. “I’m flattered by com-

parisons to Amy. It’s not something I am offended by, though I am quite different. When she met me once, she asked if I played an instrument, but I said no, and she said that was a shame as she would really have liked someone like me in her group. “I was a massive fan of hers, and after watching the documentary about her life, I actually wrote a song for her, Price of Fame, which is on the new album. Her death was such a tragedy,” adds the vocalist with a note of sadness. Having been nominated several times for a Brit Award, Paloma’s persistence paid off two years ago as she claimed a long-awaited win in the best female solo artist category. With a major award to her name, there has been plenty of hype surrounding her latest release, bolstered by notable additions including an appearance from Samuel L Jackson and a duet with singer songwriter John Legend in the mix. Besides the album, fans will have to wait a little longer for her next UK tour, which kicks off in March and she has announced a huge summer run of shows taking in Forest and Jockey Club Live events. It’s destined to feature some of Paloma’s trademark self-designed sets to spark the tone for a hit-packed series of shows. “The only reason I do what I’m doing is because I love touring – as when I’m out there I am excited and feel that I’m in the right place,” adds the engaging singer, who may well have a little In the next issu more to think about e... with a young child in tow, yet it won’t stop her from 2 Tickets enjoying every to SEE PALO M LIVE AT CARL A single moment. TRAVEL

LANZAROTE BY Lyndsey Campbell Ca sson dAWSON & SANDERSON

T

he closest of the Canary Islands to the coast of Africa, Lanzarote is blessed with year round sunshine making it an ideal holiday destination at any time of the year. Even though it does get windy at times, it rarely falls below 16Ëševen in the winter and stays sunny most of the time. Lanzarote has a spectacular volcanic landscape, however along the coast you will find many sandy beaches and popular tourist resorts. Playa Blanca, in the south of the island, was once a quiet fishing village but now offers plenty of friendly bars and restaurants along the promenade with a laid back atmosphere and white sandy beaches making it an ideal choice for families and couples. It also has a fabulous marina with plenty of boutiques, cafes and bars and has a great market twice weekly to pick up your local souvenirs. You can take a ferry across to Fuerteventura from Playa Blanca where you can visit the Dunes national park. Puerto Del Carmen is the largest resort on the island with a long golden beach offering lots of watersports. The resort has an attractive promenade with an abundance of restaurants and shops and lively nightlife with plenty of bars and clubs. You can also visit the old town and wander through the narrow streets that lead down to the harbour. Puerto Calero is an upmarket resort with an amazing marina , sophisticated restaurants and stylish boutiques. Costa Teguise is close to the airport and is a quieter resort with

a long sandy beach making it great for a relaxing break. The pedestrianised centre offers a good variety of shops, bars and restaurants and it is famous for its weekly market with jewellery, bags and local goods on offer. There are lots of things to see and do in Lanzarote and a visit to the Timanfaya National park is a must see for any visitor. Timanfaya means fire mountain and you can take an excursion here to view the moon like landscape where over 300 now dormant volcanoes once devastated the area. During your visit you will be shown several demonstrations of how hot the area still is - water is poured into a bore hole and erupts after a few seconds like a mini geyser. Even though you can not wander freely around the volcanoes a bus will take you through the area or you can even take a camel ride across the landscape. The Cueva de los Verdes is an undergound cave system formed from lava and you can take guided tours to see the colouful caves. Jameos del Agua is another series of lava caves with an underground lake, restaurant, gardens and concert hall. The lake is also home a species of blind albino crabs that are only found in Lanzarote. Cesar Manrique was a famous

artist and sculpture who was born and lived in Lanzarote. The Cesar Manrique Foundation - his former house which is now an art museum - is definitely worth a visit. It was Cesar Manrique who developed the idea for building homes in white with green or blue windows, no higher than 3 stories. There are a huge variety of restaurants from amazing seafood restaurants to local tapas , also try the mojo potatoes (wrinkly potatoes) and the locally produced wine from the La Geria region.

local arborist Andrew Edgar, [orchard tree surgery and MAINTENANCE] shares his experience AND TIPS ON TREES AND SHRUBS A very large formal hedge

A regularly maintained hedge will provide a thick, full, smart boundary to your property. Miss a few trimming sessions however, and you will soon have a hedge that has lost its shape and a more difficult job on your hands!

I

t is much easier to give the hedge a frequent light trim than it is to give it an infrequent heavy prune. Regular trimming is also much better for the hedge. Some conifers, like leylandii, react badly if you cut into old wood, potentially leaving your hedge with bald spots. WHEN TO CUT HEDGES An informal hedge, one where the natural outline of the plants are preserved, will require a maintenance trim once a year between spring and summer. A formal hedge should be trimmed two to three times a year during the growing season. Fast growing species may need a more frequent trim to keep the hedge under control. Guidelines on when to trim specific species of popular hedging plants can be found on the RHS website. HOW TO TRIM A HEDGE You will need hand-held hedge shears or a powered hedge trimmer. The latter will make the job of trimming a large hedge much quicker and won’t leave you with tired arms. When using a powered hedge trimmer make sure you stay safe. Wear safety goggles and sturdy gloves. With an electric trimmer use a safety socket, and keep the cable away from the blade. Try draping the cable over one shoulder to avoid it trailing on the ground in front of you. Before starting clear the work area of any obstacles. Using power tools above shoulder height should be avoided so use

a stable step ladder when trimming high hedges. To make the collection of clippings easier place a 2m wide plastic sheet under the hedge. This is an especially useful tip when cutting over gravel. You can then either sweep the sheet or fold it up to collect the clippings for disposal.

height. As the hedge grows taller the angle of the taper can be decreased. When using a powered trimmer to cut the sides keep the blade parallel to the hedge and use a wide, sweeping motion, walking forwards as you work. You can always use shears to go back and cut any missed sprigs!

Informal Hedges With an informal hedge you will only need to remove misplaced shoots with secateurs or loppers.

Aftercare Remember to brush off and clean up the trimmings afterwards to prevent the spread of fungal diseases. To keep the hedge in a good condition the last task is to water and mulch the plants.

Formal Hedge The hallmark of a formal hedge is that crisp straight edge and tight finish. If the hedge is only short then you could probably get away with cutting this by eye, stepping back occasionally to make sure you are on the right track. For a longer hedge, or an untrustworthy eye, create a cutting guide; place a cane into ground at both ends of the hedge then stretch a length of string between them. The sides of the hedge should be tapered in slightly so that the top is narrower than the bottom. This will allow sunlight and rainwater to reach the lower foliage and the ground, keeping the hedge thick and bushy across its entire

Get some help For hedge maintenance to be effective you need to do it regularly. Leaving it will make the job more difficult next time. If you don’t have time trim your hedge, or are not confident in your ability, then you may do more damage than good. If you would prefer for a professional to take care then Orchard Tree Surgery offer a hedge trimming service. Beautifully maintained hedges can add immense appeal to your property so don’t miss the trim this summer.

SUBJECT: HUMANS

● In 1567, the man said to have the longest beard in the world died after he tripped over his beard running away from a fire. ● Babies are born without kneecaps. They don’t appear until the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age. ● If you stop getting thirsty, you need to drink more water. When a human body is dehydrated, its thirst mechanism shuts off. ● One out of 20 people have an extra rib. ● The body’s strongest muscle is our tongue, and it is the only muscle attached at one end ● A sneeze travels out of your mouth at over 100 m.p.h. ● It is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open. ● Fingernails grow nearly four times faster than toenails. ● Most dust particles in your house are made from dead skin. ● Women blink nearly twice as much as men due to the higher levels of the hormone estrogen within their system.

f you are looking for the shortest route to a worthwhile summit then you can’t do much better than attaining the top of Latrigg from the Gale road end. This is an equally good starting point for the ascent of Skiddaw by the tourist route from Keswick. The road has been recently re-tarmaced (it was in desperate need, I recall once grounding the bottom of my car during the descent, the sparks fairly flew!) and steeply climbs to a large open area where sometimes, somewhat incongrously, a burger van sits plying its wares. At the start of the year, very early in the morning, we set off from Carlisle with a crescent moon shining down on the frozen fields, the day - when daylight arrived - would be cold, sunny and still. We reached our starting point near the old railway station in Keswick. Multiple layers, hat, gloves, handwarmers, thick socks the order of the day. The path leads through the Brundholme Woods, high above the River Greta and the old railway line. We encountered six roe deer that spotted us first and stood stock-still in an attempt to blend into the scenery. Once on the ridge, with Skiddaw hulking alongside and capped with snow, we soon arrived at the Gale Road end and took the limited ability path to the summit of Latrigg. I’m not sure if a wheelchair could be pushed along this route. It’s a long circuitous climb and would be extremely tiring to attempt. But as a walk it is fairly easy and the rewards of the views from north to south are out of all proportion to the effort required. Despite the magnificent panorama it was too cold to linger up there, so we set off down the flank of the fell with a fine aspect of the Newland’s mountains directly ahead. The track was icy in places and care was necessary. There were lots of folk about;

runners, walkers, families with dogs; we came across a couple with a toddler crying her eyes out in her father’s arms, she was obviously too cold, although well wrapped up. We hoped their car wasn’t too far away. On the same route last summer we encountered a man with a dog suffering from heat exhaustion, I recognised the spot where they had been. We were both perturbed by this and attempted to get the dog to drink from a bottle of water we were carrying - not an easy task! It seemed to be recovering by the time we left. Back to Winter, on reaching the car, my fingers were stinging and I felt a bit light -headed as my blood pressure had probably dropped. I drank a flask of coffee and that, combined with the heater blasting away in Mike’s car, soon revived me. The hand warmers, resembling a pair of tea bags, had let me down. One had burst open in my glove, leaving charcoal-y grit inside. All in all, a good morning out, though. Other rewarding short walks I recommend are Hallin Fell from Martindale Hause at the top of the Howtown zig-zags, an easy climb with a great view of Ullswater, the ascent of Loughrigg fell from Grasmere, Helm Crag from much the same starting point, Side Pike on Lingmoor Fell from the road up to Blea Tarn in Langdale for its magnificent prospect of the Langdale Pikes, the walk up to Small Water from Mardale road end, Rannerdale Knotts above Crummock Water with its sublime panorama of the Buttermere landscape and Castle Crag or indeed Grange Fell from Borrowdale, two lovely mountains in miniature.

nly very few artists out of the millions of local talented ones ever reach fame and fortune, probably, just because the time or place has not been right to be noticed. However, now is the time to see these equally impressive artists who live locally. Their creativity brings to life, in all shades of colour, the beauty and fascination of landscapes far and wide, portraits, birds, animals and flowers. To open the exhibition this year is Marie-Elsa Bragg, a Cumbrian by birth and an artist in her own ‘write’, she has published a book “Towards Mellbreak” a story about the fells and a Cumbrian Farming family.

A SECRET

COACH

CEL

EBR

Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland

need little by way of encouragement. Metronomic in my ways, I find it easy to become regimented in routine. I am alarmed by change. A few years ago I spent a day without any physical activity. Having both arms in plaster. I didn’t hate it – I spent the day outside in the sun – but I did feel without purpose. I believe you need to be physically active to have an appetite for life.

I believe you need to be physically active to have an appetite for life With all that said, I have never needed SMART technology to motivate me but I absolutely love it. Can’t get enough of it. On impulse, I recently bought a Garmin Forerunner 35 for my father to wear; his heart had an electrical fault. We – my sisters and I - wanted it to alert him (24/7) to any blips. Like me, he is a cyclist and, like me, uses Garmin on his bike and consequently has at hand enough data to sink a ship – if that’s not mixing my metaphors. This is different. It is worn as a watch. As I suspected, he soon found his cycle data of more use. He purely cycles. As I cross train I inherited and now I am obsessed with this little wonder of technology. My peak steps to date have been 28,760. Yes, 28,760. I never knew my resting heart rate, but I do now, and I am thrilled with my quality of sleep. I scratch the surface. It oozes data. These SMART devices should be on prescription for everybody. For me it is simply a validator but this is gold if you lack motivation - a sort of secret coach. Imagine being able to wear something that just looks like a watch and with nobody looking have a sneaky peak to see how many steps you have achieved and what your heart rate is doing; all at the press of a tiny button. Before, I would see my watch as a reminder that I was scheduled to a timetable. Not anymore. This is very welcome. I want to be informed of all aspects of my health. Why not become SMART too. CROSSWORD

For the answers to this crossword, email: editor@village-link.co.uk John’s stress level was at unsurpassed levels. His wife Maggie was in labor and John was sure it was time to head to the hospital. Breathing heavily, John grabbed the phone and called the doctor. “My wife, she’s ready, should we come?” The doctor tried to relax the poor fellow, “just try to relax, now tell me how much time elapses between the contractions?” “Maggie!” John screamed at the top of his lungs, “How much time in between the contractions? Ten minutes? OK, ten minutes in between!” “And is this her first child?”questioned the doctor. “No you idiot, this is her husband!”.
