Welcome
A
hh, the wonderful month of March with the first day of spring on the 20th and then the clocks go forward on the 27th to begin British Summer Time. So does that mean we only get 7 days of Spring? That can’t be right! But as soon as a daffodil appears - cue the spring cleaning product adverts! I used to hate this time of year as a child. In the early 80’s there wasn’t an outhouse in Harraby that wasn’t piled to the rafters with laundry in fact, anything that wasn’t nailed or screwed down was washed and taken outside. It was a major undertaking. On the plus side though, a day off school was inevitable. No child’s lung’s could have escaped pneumonia having inhaled the amount of toxic chemical gases we did during the week. So what is Spring Cleaning all about? In times past, when people kept their houses shut tight against the cold of winter, heated them with coal and oil and wood, and lighted them with candles, the coming of spring signaled a welcome opportunity to make a dingy habitation fresh again. On the first warm, dry day of the season, everybody in the family—that is, everyone in the family who had survived the ravages of the cold season—would pitch in to pull every stick of furniture and scrap of cloth outside. Then, armed with brooms and washrags, one squad of housecleaners would return to the house, sweeping and scrubbing every corner and washing down the

walls, while another would air out linens, remove soot and ash from couches and chairs, dust books and paintings, and mend a few items on the run. Today, the thought of taking a day or weekend to turn our houses upside down seems a near impossibility. Who has the time? Besides, our modern centrally heated and cooled, climate-controlled homes don’t get oily, sooty, or smoky, and our washing machines and vacuum cleaners help keep the dirt from sneaking in. All this talk has given me the urge to grab a mop and bucket and do some cleaning…oh… wait a minute…Nope…False Alarm…I’ll just have a brew instead! Congratulations to Patricia Hawkins who won our Crossword Competition. This issue’s Crossword prize is definitely not-to-be-missed! Not one, but TWO Gold Pamper Day treatments including lunch are up for grabs courtesy of the Crown Hotel, Wetheral. There’s no doubting we are ready for Spring after the winter we’ve just had - Enjoy.

T
he recent floodings of the Glenridding hotel are, unfortunately, not just recent events. The dam storing water for Greenside lead mine up the valley was twice the cause of similar flooding. At 1.30 am on Saturday 29 October 1927, after a period of exceptional rainfall, the earthen wall of Kepple Cove Tarn dam burst, causing a great wall of water to descend on Glenridding far below. The size of the deluge was such that it left a gap in the dam 80ft wide by 60ft deep. The flood rushed down Glenridding Beck carrying away Rattle Beck Bridge, flooding houses alongside the beck and Eagle Farm to a depth of 5 to 6ft. Debris, including dead sheep and a tea hut, was deposited on the other side of the lake near Side Farm. The basement bedrooms of the Glenridding Hotel were flooded and four sleeping girls floated up to the ceiling on their matam d tresses. One h t r a al e n i g i of these had r O ed a near escape breach as she was swept

through a window, but was then saved by one Ernest Thompson. The peninsula at Glenridding, which is now the site of the steamer pier, was formed as a result of this flood which also brought down a large mass of rocks with it. The rocks were used to build up this strip of land which is now a popular recreation area for visitors. The Keppel Cove earth dam was replaced by a rough concrete dam which also burst, although less spectacularly, in 1931. Both dams are still to be seen to this day.

PEARL OF WISDOM
Watercress contains significant levels of glucosinolate compounds and many studies now suggest that these have anti-cancer effects. Other benefits of watercress have been recognised since ancient times. Roman Emperors ate it to help them make bold ‘decisions’. Anglo-Saxons swore by watercress potage to ‘springclean’ the blood. Victorians thought the plant was a cure for toothache, hiccups and even freckles!

The arrival of SPRING
arch is the beginning of the busy season, the job list lengthening with the daylight. It can be a month of contrasts, too, with wind and frost set to challenge the first of spring growth. Knuckle down and complete winter work to make way for the tasks that are targeted at the growing season. Order your seed potatoes as they will need time to chit before planting out. Leave them in a cool, bright room to promote the eyes. Earlies can be planted later in the month and kept covered with fleece to prevent early shoots from frost damage. Choose your sunniest position for onions and shallots as they like the heat and free drainage, and wait until the second half of the month to plant. Do not plant in freshly manured ground as they prefer soil that was improved for a previous crop. Line out in rows that are easy to weed and use a dibber to insert the sets so that their necks are just below the soil. Birds love to pull them free at this stage so net until the roots have a hold.
The grass has barely stopped growing this winter so set the mower high and cut on a dry day. The smell of the first cut grass is like nothing else. Paths mown into meadows or a neat frame to a rough area will go a long way to provide the contrast that keeps a wilder garden feeling tended. As soon as the soil reaches

Sweet peas and broad beans can be sown first, and though the first of the salad can go in now you get better results if you warm the ground first with plastic or cloches. Early sowings of mustard, rocket and cut-and-come-again salad are some of the most delicious mouthfuls of the year, so seize the moment if it looks like the weather is with us and the month is kind.

or someone to make a valid Will they must have what is known as “testamentary capacity”, in other words they must be of sound mind, memory and understanding. If they lack ‘testamentary capacity’ to make a ‘Regular Will’ it is possible for an interested party to apply to the Court of Protection to make a “Statutory Will” for that person. A ‘Statutory Will’ is a Will made on behalf of a person who is judged unable to make one themselves on the instructions of the Court of Protection. It is only to be used where a person is not able to make their own Will. Although a ‘Statutory Will’ is normally made where there
any application for a ‘Statutory Will’ should not be undertaken lightly
is no Will in existence, it can also be made to replace an existing Will that is thought to no longer represent the wishes of that person,
however, there would need to be strong evidence that the provisions in an existing Will are no longer what the person wishes. When making an application for a ‘Statutory Will’ to the Court of Protection, all interested parties who may be interested in the estate must be informed. Any party who believes the Will to be unfair or unjust can lodge an objection and the Court will consider any objections. It must be remembered that the Court is being asked to make a major decision for someone and therefore any application for a ‘Statutory Will’ should not be undertaken lightly. The rules are extremely complex, it is very time consuming and the costs involved are considerable. It is wise, therefore to put your affairs in order while you still have ‘testamentary capacity’. Here at Butterworths we can advise on making a Will and guide you through the process. Our fees for making a straightforward ‘Regular Will’ are £135 plus VAT for a single Will and £199 plus VAT for a married couple, however, if the Wills turn out to be more complex then we reserve the right to charge more.

MILES
I
Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland
n the big and stupendous world of cycling ‘getting the miles in’ is an oft used expression. Often it refers to ‘winter’ miles which are the very foundation of the active summer months. Winter miles are often thought to determine your performance during the ‘season’ should performance be your thing. If it is not and you simply enjoy bitter, cold wets days on your bike then you will simply find your summer cycling more effortless. Naturally. Pondering this whilst walking my little crew I wondered if they knew how very fortunate they are.
Winter miles are often thought to determine your performance during the ‘season’ should performance be your thing Having read only a day or two before that many dogs are feeling depressed by their lack of such adventures - this because their owners are unwilling to venture into said bitter, cold wet days; for no good reason I can think of. As long as you can move your limbs in a forward motion it matters not how many layers you put on. Looking down at my little fellows pulling this way and that, missing nothing, I could not help but think how to them a good bit of mud and an extra large puddle to wade through is nirvana. Mischa our black Labrador is delirious when the weather turns stormy. Whilst my mind wandered I totted up our mileage. We have one rest day, usually Friday, otherwise it is harnesses on. We cover four and a half miles per walk – we think the half matters and often more miles at weekends. So we average thirty miles per week. Quite something. We all – I include myself - have great appetites, big lungs and we sleep like logs. Dreaming of our adventures in the great outdoors; again I include myself. We see the seasons change. Sometimes we are horizontal pushing against gale force winds. Other times we are bathed in bright sunlight and occasionally we all require a bath. We take it as it comes. Somewhere in there is a lesson to all. T: 01768 896733 | M: 07976 266335 Email: carol@pilates-cumbria.co.uk www.pilates-cumbria.uk We are committed to successfully promoting your business or venture

ometimes it can be quite a shock when you realise that actually, you are caring for a loved one, so you are their Carer. You could be caring for your Mum, Dad, relative, or neighbour, and as such you are entitled to a Carer’s Assessment, or maybe some other means of support. A Caring role can sneak up on you without you realising how much you are doing for the person you are caring for. Some people can be quite isolated, find their role as a Carer demanding and sometimes hard to accept. Please contact Carlisle Carers and let us talk you through some of the options of support available to you.
Is there a Young Carer in your family? There are times when it can be quite a challenge to fulfil everything a caring role demands, and some of the tasks are expected to be carried out by young sons and daughters. Do you have a young person in your household who has a caring role? Carlisle Carers support those Young Carers, working with them in school to balance home tasks with homework, and at home, working with parents and other siblings to support them in their roles. Some young Carers have quite big caring roles, and find themselves being late for school sometimes, or very tired at school. Working with the family and

ADVERTORIAL
Solway customers blissfully unaware as nationwide BT broadband outages run rampant. by Nick Kittoe, MD of Solway Communications
BT’s latest broadband collapse brought the UK economy to a grinding halt, with homes and businesses across the country unable to connect and communicate. uper-resilient fibre optic is the next generation in broadband networks, and you would think that industry giants like BT would have the skill and expertise to handle such an emergency. At Solway Communications we know just how seriously a poor-quality connection can hold you back in your day-to-day life. More people and more businesses are joining us every day because we can guarantee unlimited, top-quality connectivity (even in those hard-to-reach areas) and better reliability than the leading providers – and that’s no exaggeration. BT suffered from multiple serious issues, the most recent being a major core router issue affecting the whole of the UK, leaving those who have BT ADSL (Standard Internet), FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and Lease Line internet connections with no Internet whatsoever. Our industrial strength network routing meant that absolutely none of our customers lost connectivity for the duration of the BT issue, simply because being small, new and cautious, we make sure there are always at least two independent routes from our network to the Internet. Not only that, the recent floods and storms threatened to blow businesses in Cumbria off course just as they were preparing for Christmas. The Solway network provided an important lifeline for our customers during this incredibly vital time in the trading year. Our high speed, resilient broadband has provided crucial help to many homes and businesses in the North West at a time when other communications have been cut. Our expert engineers work flat out to secure and maintain the Solway network so communities can stay connected and businesses can continue to trade even when disaster strikes. It’s all part of being resilient and built for the bad times, as well as the good. Give us a call on 01228 915 020 or email info@solwaycomms.com to find out just how fast and for how little we could install you with better, faster broadband that won’t give up on you.

TRAVEL
ALL INCLUSIVE
TRAVEL
GUIDE
Heading off to the Caribbean for winter or enjoying some mediterranean sunshine in the summer? dawson & sanderson tell what are the top destinations and what to expect.
S
ome of the best spots for all inclusive holidays are clearly at their best at certain times of the year but it’s worth checking out when your favourite destinations are in season. It’s no good wanting to do nothing but sunbathe and sit by the pool sipping cocktails if you’re travelling in the rainy season! Here are a few of the most popular all inclusive destinations so you know what to expect. SPRING maldives: April is the last month of the dry season in the Maldives, and a great time to visit. The weather is still perfect for lying on the beach. Spring makes an ideal compromise for couples who want weather and great diving conditions. The northeast season from December to April is the driest time of year meaning divers on the eastern sides of the atolls get the best visibility, then from May to December, the currents change to mean west is best. Cape Verde: Weather is also the key in Cape Verde. Watersports enthusiasts flock to these Atlantic Islands for the optimal wind conditions between January and May. However, even if you’re not the sporty type, the breeze off the ocean is a welcome relief. February to May is also the prime time to go whale watching off Boa Vista Island. Summer Cyprus: Families are a significant target market for all inclusive holidays, giving parents the peace of mind on price and taking the pressure off having to find restaurants or entertainment every night....and I’m talking from experience! Cyrpus’s sandy beaches
12
and comfortable climate have always been a family favourite, so the growing number of all inclusive hotels - particularly in the four and five star end - make it even more compelling. Top selling all inclusive range from thhe Olympic Lagoon resort in Paphos to the five-star St Raphael Resort Hotel in Limassol where the ultra all inclsuive package allows access to six restaurants and a wider activity programme.
IT’S NO GOOD WANTING TO DO NOTHING but sunbathe and sit by the pool if you’re travelling in the rainy season! Barbados: The Caribbean?....In summer I hear you say! While it’s off season for the islanders, the chance of a few more downpours - usually over as soon as they’ve begun - isn’t a reason to avoid the region entirely. In fact, July and August are when the locals come out to play, with the Crop Over festival taking centre stage in Barbados, carnival in Antigua and Spicemas in Grenada. Airfares are on the pricy side but with significant reduced hotel rates, it’s perhaps worth a closer look. Families may want to consider Turtle Beach Resort where the all inclusive package covers water sports, kids club and dining at its sister resorts. Autumn Greece: Anyone who has braved Greece in the summer knows that, although ideal for sunbathing and long, lazy lunches by the sea, anything more strenuous is out of the question until it cools down. That’s why active types are better
off in autumn, when they can get out and appreciate the islands at their best. Why not consider Rhodes, where low 20s temperatures are comfortable for hiking or biking through the mountainous landscapes of the west and interior, discovering deserted beaches, or climbing up to admire the views from the Monastery of Tsambika. Spain: With many of the same factors in their favour as Greece, the Spanish mainland and islands are perfectly pleasant in autumn. Not only can sun seekers still catch the last of the warm weather temperatures stay in the 20s until late September on the mainland and through October in the Canaries - but it’s also a better time to see these resorts when they’re not overrun with other tourists. Many towns along the Costa Del Sol have their local fiestas in October - Nerja and Fuengirola among them plus movie buffs can look out for a few familiar faces at the Marbella Film Festival in October. In Tenerife, it’s a good opportunity to hike across the lunar landscapes of Mount Teide or go kayaking and surfing. Don’t forget sea temperatures stay warm long after the air has cooled - plus shorter daylight hours give stargazers more time to observe Tenerife’s clear skies. Winter The Gambia: It might be just six hours away and in the same time zone as the UK, but The Gambia’s 30ºc temperatures and days of unbroken sunshine are a far cry from a British winter. If you just want to sit back and relax, a multitude of beach front hotels can oblige. The Gambian Experience recommends the ‘all inclusive light’ option at Ocean Bay, which includes meals, snacks, afternoon tea, soft drinks and five vouchers a day for alcoholic drinks including beer, house wine, local spirits and selected cocktails. Sri Lanka: For a relatively small island, Sri Lanka has a complex weather pattern, with two separate monsoons to consider. Generally speaking, the west and south coasts are best from December to March, and the east from May to September. Mercury Holidays recommends Royal Palms Beach Hotel in Kalutara, 25 miles south of Colombo, which has a second week for free for selected 2016 departures and some remarkably good value rates.

Fellwalking enthusiast Stephen Robson reflects on a labour of love which took forty years to achieve – completing all 214 Wainwright Fells.
s there a more impressive fell than Blencathra in the Lake District? That’s opened up a can of worms! Rather like a lot of us, it has a good and a not so good side. The succession of ridges and gullies on the southern front of the mountain, well seen from St. Johns in the Vale, gives a true flavour of this distinguished peak. Blencathra would be a magnificent mountain regardless of where it stood. Sited where it is, amongst the largely unchallenging northern fells group, it reigns supreme. Out the back however, overlooking Skiddaw forest, it is perhaps the blandest of the fells. Mungrisdale Common has the distinction, if that’s the word, of being a hill without a single contour line to call its own. Climb it if you must, but it is a poor substitute for all of the excitement in the “front window”. It is the fell I know best and probably the one I’ve climbed most often, being one of the closest, geographically, to Carlisle. I have scaled it on wild windy days when one is battling the elements. There again, there have been days of absolute calm when I have lingered long on the summit, drinking in the magnificent views to the south and west. One September evening many years ago I headed up in the gathering gloom, climbing the central and finest of the ridges, to the summit. Having said that, there are safer peaks to climb in darkness and I was fortunate to get back to the car without incident. Another very scary experience was in wintertime in a white out with a young man intent on climbing sharp edge with one pair of crampons between us - one each! I insisted we turn back and was rewarded by carrying on living. Blencathra (I never refer to it as Saddleback) is my second favourite fell (after Great Gable). Days without number I have followed the Glen-

deramackin river to Scales Tarn, a gem of a pool set in a natural amphitheatre, before toiling up to clamber along the rocky spine of sharp edge, high above on the right. There is a large cairn at the start of the arête where I always take a moment to catch my breath. On the very apex a keen wind often blows up from the tarn-this is one of the best places to be in the area! That said; please don’t attempt this if you do not possess good balance and a head for heights! The mountain has been included in two films recently. It is to be seen in the latest Star Wars movie “The Force Awakens”, various scenes having been shot around Derwentwater and Thirlmere. Just to confuse aficionados of the district, extra mountains have been added in or painted out! The other is Terry Abraham’s new film “Life of a mountain: Blencathra”, due out this May. Terry has been up there in all weathers to capture the fell in all its moods. I tried to get myself included in September last year when he invited people to join him on the summit for interviews. Unfortunately the weather was rotten and the session was postponed. It would be remiss of me to not mention the fact that the mountain is up for sale for a cool 1.75 million pounds. Hugh Lowther, Earl of Lonsdale, is looking to use the proceeds to pay off a large tax bill from his father’s inheritance. There is a large group “Friends of Blencathra” hoping to purchase the peak. At the time of writing the national lottery is at a multiple rollover stage.... just imagine casually mentioning to someone whilst driving past “oh yes, I own that!”

That Computer Thing Again
Young Susie was having trouble with her computer so she called Tom, the computer geek, over to her desk. Tom clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away Susie called after him. “So, what was wrong?” Tom replied, “It was an ‘ID ten T’ error”. A puzzled expression ran over Susie’s face. “An ID ten T error? What’s that?” He gave her one of those condescending, know it all, geek expressions. “Haven’t you ever seen an ‘ID ten T’ error before?” Susie replied, “No”. “Write it down” he said, “and I think you’ll work it out”. t Discovery Childcare we are celebrating our one year anniversary and our first successful Ofsted inspection. We were delighted to be judged “good” in all areas with the inspector stating:
“The qualified staff team has a secure knowledge of how young children learn and develop. Staff carefully organise learning environments to meet children’s interests and keep them motivated. This means children eagerly engage in stimulating experiences.” Since we opened our nursery on Kingmoor Business Park in the North of Carlisle we have grown significantly. Our highly experienced staff team, with the support of our 2 apprentices, utilise their vast experience to provide a warm, stimulating environment for the children in our care. All of our core staff have management experience and continue to develop their skills through ongoing training. The nursery provides flexible care on an hourly basis to meet the needs of working parents. We recognise that not every parent’s working day fits a typical nursery session so we offer care to meet those needs. The nursery has a separate baby unit with attached sleep room, toddler and pre-school rooms. We have an outdoor area with grass and hardstanding and we also use the local area for visits to the park, shops and the nature reserve. For further details, please contact us on 01228 672459.

Good afternoon, I wanted to pass this on to your readers as there are so many positive stories I hear across the county about day care. I thought I would pass one on. Jo Radcliffe (Age UK Carlisle and Eden) T: 01768 863618 • T: 01228 536673
I was lonely and isolated
I lost my husband suddenly in a car accident. We had just moved here to enjoy our retirement together and then I was alone. We loved the area and had many plans to explore. These were now all gone! I was alone, depressed and isolated as I don’t drive. My children wanted me to move closer to them. I didn’t want to up root again, but my family were concerned about me being so alone. My husband had always been there and getting out was getting harder and harder. My son’s concern was also growing and he arranged for me to attend Age UK Carlisle and Eden day centre. I didn’t want to go and I made quite a fuss, ‘it’s full of old people!’ He laughed and said please just give it a go. The staff were very welcoming and treated us like old friends. We sat with some lovely people and I chatted for the first time about happy times. We had a delicious home cooked two course lunch. All too soon it was time to go home. But I didn’t want to go back without my son by my side. A few days later I was in the doctor’s surgery and a lady I didn’t know said hello. We chatted and she said she hoped to see me next week. I must have looked blank. ‘We meet at Age UK Carlisle and Eden day centre and I was hoping to see you again’, she said. ‘I don’t think so, I went with my son and can’t face it on my own’, I replied. I mentioned the conversation to the Nurse, whilst she was taking blood and she said she had heard that they had been on a day trip to Gretna and they had all had a wonderful time. I left the surgery with much to think about and later in the evening it was all I could think about. As I lay in bed that night I thought why not give it a go, if I don’t like it on my own I don’t have to go again. That was two months ago. I am so pleased that I took that first step, everyone made me feel so welcome and I have made a few friends too and my children have noticed the difference. Having something to look forward to, has made all the difference to me, it could to you too.

Men’s Help Line
“Hello, you have reached the Men’s Help Line, my name is Bob. How can I help you?”. Hi Bob, I really need your advice on a serious problem. I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. You know, just the usual signs: The phone rings and when I answer, the caller hangs up. Plus, she goes out with the girls a lot. I usually try to stay awake until she comes home, but I always fall asleep. Anyway, last night about midnight, I woke up and she was not home. So, I hid in the garage, behind my boat and waited for her. When she came home, she got out of someone’s car and was buttoning her blouse as she walked to the house. It was at that moment, while crouched behind the boat, that I noticed a hairline crack in the outboard motor mounting bracket. Is this something I can weld, or do I need to replace the whole bracket?
