ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

C

an you really believe what you read? Well obviously, when you are reading the Village Link Magazine, the answer will be an emphatic YES! However more and more recently we are hearing reports of “Fake News”. According to the Oxford Dictionary the word “Post-Truth” was nominated as the word of 2016. What is “Fake News” and why is this “Post-Truth” trend happening? Well according to one website....(I’ve checked it’s real), Fake News is a type of hoax or deliberate spread of misinformation (false information), be it via the traditional print or broadcasting news media or via Internet-based social media. To qualify as fake news, a story has to be written and published with the intent to mislead in order to gain financially or politically. Sad really that people have to resort to false information for their own gains - are people really that gullible? Well, yes. No names mentioned here, but someone very close to me, let slip the other day that she (clue) was looking on her Facebook feed and somebody had posted one of those “try this” things... it said “if you say the word ‘gullible’ slowly, twenty times, it will sound like oranges”. It was only on the 20th ‘gullible’ that she thought “no it doesn’t” - that the penny dropped.

So whether you read, repeat or repost news in 2017, here are things to ask yourself: Have I heard of the publisher before? Is this the source I think it is, or does it sound a bit like them? Can I point to where this happened on a map? Has this been reported anywhere else? Here at the Village Link we don’t do Fake News; we only give you great stuff to read that hopefully you enjoy! Congratulations to Josh and Gracie who rescued Bear from London Road Park. Finally, we have two pairs of tickets up for grabs to see the fabulous Jess Glynne at her upcoming open air concert at Carlisle Racecourse – get your entries in fast - you won’t want to miss this!!

Circus horses coming out of the station in the 1950’s

s common carriers up to 1962, railways had to take everything that was offered for transit. Perishable livestock was taken by passenger train, in the guard’s van, or a specially designated carriage attached to a scheduled service. Often a special train would bring in an entire circus to Carlisle, big top, elephants and all. Otter hounds travelled by train from Carlisle to Arran and racing pigeons were regularly taken by train to be released 300 miles or so away. Today there is no such traffic on the railway, but there is plenty of wildlife in the station. The Cumberland News reported in 1994: “Rail chiefs desperate to get rid of starlings roosting in Carlisle station have hired pest controllers from Kent to scare them off – with exploding balloons. Dozens of birds are making their homes on girders under the station roof and are creating a nuisance for passengers and station staff.” A decoy owl sat for many years above the west side of the footbridge (it has been removed

temporarily while the station roof is being glazed, but will be replaced). More drastic methods have been used to deal with starlings. The five year old Harris Hawk pictured, called ‘Rolf’ and handler was called in. On one occasion a train was delayed by 16 minutes whilst the hawk was coaxed of a carriage roof, where it had settled to devour a starling. More about the Citadel Station in the past can be found in the book by Denis Perriam and myself entitled ‘Carlisle Citadel Station, 150 Years a Railway Centre’ , available at Bookends, Tullie House, or online from the publisher at P3 Publications www. p3publications.com

s parents, we have lots to worry about. At Mini First Aid, we have to make sure in our classes that we don’t worry parents too much but that we do provide the facts and the emergency treatment techniques. Many parents and carers attending our classes have never heard of a febrile seizure. We are seeing however more and more parents who have experienced

What should you do? • Stay calm • Put pillows around them to protect them, but do not restrain. • Cool them (without sudden shock cold temperatures) once the seizure has stopped. • Remove additional layers of clothing. Open a window/door. • The seizure should last for less than 5 minutes. • Place the baby/child on their side with their head tilted back • Call 999 Whilst these seizures are normally not life threatening, as parents and carers we need to know what to do. If the seizure reoccurs within 24 hours there may be something more serious going on, which is why you should always ring 999.

(sometimes violently). During this time the baby or child is unconscious. Febrile seizures are most common in babies from birth to 3 years; the age in which their bodies heat control system is rather amateur and they are unable to regulate their body temperature. Illness causes a fever (high temperature) and their body responds by having a seizure.

FOOD PEARL OF WISDOM Haddock are demersal fish, meaning they live and feed on and around the seabed. The haddock is much more selective about what it eats than the cod, with small invertebrates, shellfish, worms and crabs making up the majority of its diet. The smoking of haddock was highly refined in Grimsby. Traditional Grimsby smoked fish is produced in the traditional smokehouses in Grimsby, which are mostly family-run businesses that have developed their skills over many generations.

I

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

have finally come to the conclusion that I am set in my ways. Take my hair for example. Those who know me know that I always wear my hair up. On occasion however, usually when I have just had my hair cut, I try wearing it down during which time I am totally out of sorts. I become self-obsessed, constantly look at myself and actually feel I walk differently, strange I know but true. The record to date of wearing my hair down is five days. The minute I put my hair back up I feel calm is restored and life can go on. I only

ever thought that this applied to my hair but apparently not. I recently decided to try a new colour lipstick and sought the advice of a beautician in a department store. The beautician looked at me and told me that with my colouring I should wear coral, so on her advice I bought a coral coloured lipstick. I tell no lie when I say that on the following Monday morning at work the lady I share my office with did a double take when she saw me but politely said nothing. After a week of being obsessed about my lips I reverted back to my good old lipstick and once again calm

was restored. I could go on but I won’t bore you anymore. All I can say is that thank goodness I am not set in my ways when it comes to food and trying new recipes which I love doing. Having said that when it comes to midweek meals I think we do get a little bit set in our ways, I know I do. There is, however, one item of food that always ends up in my shopping basket each week and that is smoked haddock. I find it really handy to have in my fridge especially when it comes to quick and easy mid-week meals. There are a couple of things I do with smoked haddock, for example it makes a great risotto. However, the recipe I am going to share with you is for Smoked Haddock Chowder. This is so quick and easy and I defy anyone not to love it. Heat a knob of butter in a large saucepan. Tip in 2 rashers of chopped streaky bacon and cook until starting to brown. Add 1 chopped onion and cook until soft then pour over 500ml milk. Add 2 medium peeled and cubed potatoes and bring to boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Add 2 fillets of smoked haddock and cook for a further 5/10 minutes until the fish is cooked, it will break into chunks when cooked through. Finally add a small tin of sweetcorn, season and heat through. Scatter over some parsley and serve with lots of warm crusty bread. Absolutely delicious www.village-link.co.uk

You’re back for the second year running playing at The Jockey Club Live events around the country and coming to Carlisle, what has brought you back? Jess: I had a lot of fun last year firstly. Secondly, the support from The Jockey Club Live for charities was really special and loving horses as much as I do and the shows we did I couldn’t say no. Your Autumn arena tour was a huge success, do the crowds at these differ from those at the racecourse? Jess: Every crowd has a different energy but they don’t differ too much! The atmosphere at both types of shows was overwhelmingly amazing. You managed to go into the crowds at some events last year to watch the racing, did you place a cheeky bet and win? Jess: Yes I did, I sneaked out into the crowd and put a bet on and came up with a winner but it wasn’t down to my knowing the form though. Just luck! Jess: Is it good to know that your music has such broad appeal when you consider the ages and demographic of your fanbase? Jess: I love the fact that the songs

www.carlislepressurewashing.co.uk People like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust

resonate and touch people, whatever their age or background! What can we expect from your live show? Jess: At this point in time I have no idea. I haven’t got in to planning my live shows for this year yet! It will be exciting no matter what though. As they are large scale outdoor summer events, do you approach them differently from the indoor shows? Jess: Our approach is the same for both indoor and outdoor events - the band and I love playing live and the crowds don’t differ too much in size so it’s great! Carlisle is a perfect example of this, but is it good to play in parts of the country that are not on the normal touring circuits that you would do? Jess: Yeah, of course. It’s always good to see people that I wouldn’t normally reach. Will you be bringing your friends and family along to the show? Jess: Maybe but I doubt it as the shows are dotted all about the country. That’s ok though cause me and the band always have a lot of fun. What have you got planned for the remainder of 2017? Jess: 2017 is going to be an exciting year.. You’ll have to wait and see!

T

he British Red Cross is proud to announce their Plant, Craft and Gift fair, a brand new event taking place at the beautiful setting of Leighton Hall, Carnforth in Lancashire (just off J35 of the M6) on Sunday 21 May 2017, 10am until 4pm. This will be a fair with a difference – country fair meets market day in a bid to capture all the local flavours of Lancashire and Cumbria as well as its craft skills and green fingery. We already have a good selection of unusual plants, floral arrangements, quality crafts and gifts including handmade soaps and other toiletry products, wooden products, fairy doors, garden products, all kinds of handmade jewellery, vintage clothing, art and antiques, cupcakes, a local brewery plus a hog roast and great coffee supplier! But we have room for more stalls and there is a lovely marquee in case of inclement weather. If you’d like to join us on this fabulous day as a stallholder, stalls

are available from £40 but full details including the application form and terms and conditions are available on www.redcross.org.uk/leightonhall. The Leighton Hall tea room will also be open all day and there will also be various quality food concessions such as a hog roast and great fresh coffee. This will be a great way for many quality crafters and plantsmen to reach a new audience with their products, make new contacts and do business in a delightful setting. By supporting the British Red Cross in our special event they will help us to continue our services in the UK and overseas. Stalls are available from £40 outside and from £65 within the marquee for more delicate crafts and gifts. Entry to the buying public on the day is £5 per person – children and parking free - with all money raised going to fund the work of the British Red Cross. Tickets are available on our website at just £4 in advance.

W

ith its glaciers, hot thermal springs, spectacular geysers, active volcanoes, lava fields, stunning waterfalls and snow-capped mountains, Iceland is indeed the original ‘land of fire and ice’ as well as being home to several Hollywood blockbusters. So much so, that the Iceland Tourist Board has set up an interactive map of the best known sites for filming Hollywood movies and television series, including Game of Thrones, James Bond, Star Wars, Interstellar and Batman Begins, to name but a few. Long summer days with nearly 24-hours of sunshine are offset by short winter days with only few hours of daylight. Iceland is steadily increasing in popularity as a travel destination with flights on offer from Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Iceland also offers so much to see and do that repeat visits may be necessary, particularly as the country seems so different in Summer and Winter. The Summer weather enables all sorts of outdoor fun in the glorious unique landscapes, but

the icy winter months bring with them the spectacular Northern Lights, truly one of the most magical experiences the world has to offer. Most of the country’s popular tourist features are in the south of the island near the capital, Reykjavik, and can be explored on the much celebrated ‘Golden Circle’ route. Top of the list for scenic splendour are the Gullfoss double-tiered waterfall and the spouting hot springs of Geysir. Reykjavik has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the cleanest, most invigorating cities in Europe, and boasts one of the highest standards of living in the world. The city may be small, but it is full of interesting attractions, from galleries and museums to thermal

bathing spots, and the nightlife is second to none. Iceland’s mildish climate can rapidly change into heavy rain, biting wind or fog. May, June and July are the driest months of the year. In the north and east, the weather is better. Mid June to August is high season.

A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. “My dog’s cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him? “ “Well,” says the vet, “let’s have a look at him” So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth. Finally, he says, “I’m going to have to put him down.” “What? Because he’s cross-eyed? “ “No, because he’s really heavy”

Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. There are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It’s either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother Colin. Or my younger brother Ho-Cha-Chu. But I think it’s Colin.

My dad used to be a bomb disposal officer. He likes to keep his hand in by stopping the microwave with just one second to go.

Adventures Fellwalking enthusiast Stephen Robson reflects on a labour of love which took forty years to achieve – completing all 214 Wainwright Fells.

A

friend of mine recently asked for a few recommendations; what were my favourite fells? This prompted me to scurry into my utility room where on the wall is pinned the Fir Tree map of the Lake District national park. This is what I consult before many a walk; it illustrates the whole area as though one was surveying it from a plane. My two first choices are easy and occur to me almost before I start thinking about the 214 contenders. One, in the North of the district, is the noble Blencathra, the other in the Western fells, the mighty Great Gable. I have had more happy days on these two than I care to remember. Blencathra has its series of south facing ridges above the A66, as well as the well named arête Sharp Edge, Gable - crumbs, where do I even start? My very favourite place to be in the lakes is centred on the south elevation, the bristling Napes ridges. Full in the sun on the right sort of day, facing the wall of the Scafells. Then there is the arc of Gable crag to the North; dark and forbidding above stone cove. The summit holds a special reverence for many walkers and commands great views. Other good peaks in the Northern fells include Skiddaw, if you climb it via Ullock Pike and Longside above Bassenthwaite Lake. I always enjoy Carrock Fell via Rake Trod and the combination of Bowscale Fell and Bannerdale crags, descending by the latter’s East ridge - an excellent expedition. The Northwestern fells have linking ridge walks; those from Causey Pike to Eel Crag and Whiteside/ Hopegill Head are two I love. In the West, the High Stile trinity above Buttermere , the ridge from Gatesgarth to Fleetwith Pike with its wonderful retrospective view, and of course the sublime top of Haystacks where Alfred Wainwrights ashes are scattered by Innominate tarn, are all unmissable. Yewbarrow above Wastwater has a great summit ridge and was my pal Julian’s final Wainwright fell. Not that he’s died or anything.

Your online advert includes a Live Link to your website at no extra cost

The Langdales The Southern fells have the Scafells, highest of all, some of it a stony wilderness, Bowfell and Crinkle Crags; possibly the best ridge walk of all (subjective!) Esk Pike next door to them with its cracking view of upper Eskdale and the lovely summits of Illgill Head and Whin Rigg with their dramatic plunge into Wastwater, far below. In the centre of the district, the Langdale Pikes present a striking facade like no other, best admired from Lingmoor Fell opposite. Helm Crag, above Grasmere, is my unattainable summit, the Howitzer is too scary to attain. Grange Fell and Castle crag are both of lower elevation and rather sweet. Eagle Crag and Sergeants Crag above Langstrath are well worth doing; the former’s summit one of the very best. To the East Helvellyn with its edges, Nethermost Pike, particularly when climbed from Grisedale, the steep sided St Sunday Crag and Cofa Pike are all exhilarating walking country. Finally, in the Far East, the undulating Ill Bell ridge, High Street from Mardale Head with a descent via Nan Beild pass and Small Water and the lovely summit of Angletarn Pikes complete my nominees. And yet - there will be many people who disagree with my choices. Not all of them, but some at least. One man’s meat, another man’s poison. Some to avoid are the boggy terrain of Bleaberry Fell, High Seat, Armboth Fell and Ullscarf above Thirlmere. An absolute quagmire, even after a long period of dry weather. Surely no one can disagree with me there? www.village-link.co.uk

Feeling

Hot, Hot, Hot!

A

s the summer finally reaches our region, you can take simple steps to help your pet cope with the heat and humidity. Heat stress can be serious. If not treated, it can result in the hospitalisation or even death of your pet. Animals most at risk are those with thick coats, short snouts, are overweight, extremely old or young and also those suffering from heart conditions or other serious medical problems. The most common signs of heat stress are: • heavy panting often with long thick strings of drool. • Lethargy, lack of coordination and being unusually quiet • Vomiting and collapse. If your pet starts to show any signs of heat stress, move them to a cool area away from the sun and contact your vet. You can keep your pet cool by following these top tips:

• Provide plenty of shade for your pet to rest in • Increase the amount of fresh drinking water • Never leave your pet in your car, even with the windows open • Enjoy your walks first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening when temperatures are lower. • Put your dog’s favourite food in an ice cube, or stuff a Kong and put it into the freezer to make a tasty, cool treat. • Groom your pet regularly to remove all that hot excess fur!

ack in 2004 my home ‘Hill Top Barn’ was celebrated for its pinkness. Pink cooker, pink fridge, pink dustbin (you get the picture). I had a pink car. So I am justly tickled pink to see that in 2017 pink is everywhere – a national obsession. I did it first. The Swan in Newby Bridge is my spiritual home. Any interior styling decision I make I ask myself

Pink is feminine and romantic. It tones down the physical passion of red replacing it with a gentle loving energy. would The Swan do this. If the answer is yes then more pink is bustled in. There is nothing bashful about The Swan in Newby Bridge. There is nothing apologetic - it is just pure, unadulterated unabashed pink. Of every hue. The exterior stonework of our home is a gentle pink with strawberry pink lintels. On grey days the pink is more prominent and on bright sunny days less so. Curiously, our home, that was possibly once two cottages, is defined by ‘his’ and ‘hers’. Two bedrooms and a bathroom on one side the same on the other separated by a little step that my husband reminds me would once have housed a door! My side is washed pink floral and his duck egg blue. This works. My bath is painted pink my floor tiles adorned with rose buds my taps gloriously ornate and it should go without saying gold. We recently welcomed a new sofa into our lives it is gloriously, unashamedly pure velvet and pink. It asks you in an inviting tone to make yourself comfortable and you can’t resist. It is neither formal and proper nor squidgy and soft. It is firm, but without an ounce of pretentiousness and that is maybe the thing about pink. Pink lovers have warmth in their hearts. There is no edge. I can only wear red occasionally. I am devoid of anger. I have watched others growling, hopping up and down, from behind my hands, and wondered why do they do that? Lose control. Me? I would rather waft off to a dreamy cloud of pink marshmallows and leave them to it. I conclude.
