ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS
Welcome
O
ne thing that seems to be lacking these days is loyalty. For example, we recently acquired a second car here at Village Link HQ, and as the law states, the vehicle had to be insured – and so the nightmare began. I naively thought this would only take a few minutes, so I contacted my current insurer who we have been with for many, many years (yes, I know, I should have switched!!!) After a 20 minute interrogation of my life, the advisor delightedly mentioned his companies fantastic “Multi Car Discounts”! Excellent, I thought, just the job! Now, bearing in mind that the second car isn’t anything flash, just a little run around, you can imagine my concern when, after what had now been an eternity, the bloke said (and I quote), “I’m delighted to tell you, Mr Corrie, that the policy for this new car is coming up more expensive than your currently insured car, which I am sorry about – would you still like to go ahead”. Mmm, let me think about that one. You see, if customer loyalty existed, he, they, my current Insurer, would genuinely have cared about my experience. They would have heard my knees buckle and give way when I heard the price - then rectified it so I stay with them – and keep coming back to them in the future! But sadly, no such joy.

Whatever happened to the words of Henry Ford “It is not the employer who pays the wages. Employers only handle the money. It is the customer who pays the wages.” Anyway, at least I’ve got that off my chest. Enjoy this last issue of 2017. Many thanks to all who have been involved this year - we couldn’t do it without you (no seriously, Henry Ford has a good point!) Congratulations to Mrs Baker, Warwick-on-Eden and Mrs Bain, Dalston who both won a copy of the fantastic book written by Keith Gregson, Tracing Your Northern Ancestors. Congratulations also to Ciara who found Winston and Poppy who rescued Bear! See you next year....

idea that used a magnet to keep the buckle closed, once engaged. John Kell, a brilliant engineer and designer, carried out further work to reduce its weight, cost and improve its ‘crash–worthiness’. Once patented the company saw its seat belt sales increase spectacularly and the product became a major licence fee earner. This led to the iconic name ‘KANGOL MAGNET’. Business continued to expand and several take-overs ensued between 1972 and 1993. These were the golden

n 1893 Jakob Henryk Spreiregen was born of Jewish parents in Russian controlled Warsaw. He came to England in 1918 and set up a business importing Basque berets from France. By 1930 the business was doing well and he decided to brand them. The name ‘KANGOL’ is thought to be contrived from the constituent fibres – Knitted ANGora woOL. Then in 1938 he began making his own berets at Cleator in West Cumbria. During the war the factory made military caps which in the 1940’s became very popular with civilians due to Montgomery’s fondness for berets. In 1952 a factory in Frizington was opened and in 1954 the factory in Denton Holme, previously owned by hatters ‘William Carrick and Sons’, was acquired. By 1959 the firm in Carlisle was producing early ‘pudding basin’ safety and ‘peaked’ motorcycle helmets. The latter were soon considered a safety hazard and the peaks were then made detachable (to prevent broken necks when the peak hit the road!). The real breakthrough came in 1962 when, at the advice of Jack Rigby, the company changed their role to become a Safety company rather than a Safety Helmet company. The Kangol Seatbelt company was born and the firm advertised for a buckle suitable for seat belt use. A man named Seward came up with an
years according to Alan Tucker, managing director of the plant until it’s closure in 2003, when production was re-located to Romania. The site was cleared and replaced more recently with student residences. Kangol, Carlisle, employed up to 1000 employees in and around Carlisle. It was the largest seatbelt and in-car safety company in the UK with annual sales of around £50 million in the late 80s and early 90s, 40% of that total being exported. If you wish to find out more, Alan Tucker’s new book, ‘Kangol – The Golden Years’ tells the whole story. Available direct from the publisher, P3 Publications.com, from Bookends, Carlisle and various other outlets in the city. All profits from the book will be donated to Eden Valley Hospice.

For most climbers, it’s safety first. But Brad Gobright is definitely not most climbers. Fuelled by day-old doughnuts and unhindered by a fear of falling, this young talent is pushing the limits of scary trad and free solo ropeless climbing in his backyard playground of Eldorado Canyon, Colorado. Having survived a few big scares, Brad is determined to make his boldest ascent yet – a first-ever free solo of one of Eldo’s most exposed and difficult routes. Margo Hayes Stumped Maureen Beck may have been born missing her lower left arm, but that hasn’t stopped her from going hard. She pushes her ‘stump’ to the limit, takes whippers on 5.12, and crushes overhanging boulders, while sinking beers between burns. She isn’t making excuses for herself though. “I don’t want to just be a good one-armed climber,” says Maureen. “I want to be a good climber.”

The other is when a blood vessel ruptures and an area of the brain is then under pressure. Strokes can affect all ages, although, they are more likely to affect older people. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

RANGE ROVER
VELAR
V
elar. It’s an odd name, isn’t it? But believe it or not, it isn’t the result of a few glasses of wine and a Scrabble bag; there is history to it. When Land Rover developed the original Range Rover back in the sixties, the firm wanted to conceal its identity, so derived Velar from the latin word Velare, meaning to veil or cover. Land Rover’s chief creative officer Gerry McGovern said at the reveal of the Velar that it aims to fill the “white space” between the Evoque and Sport. There’s plenty of head room and the seats go back a long way to accommodate taller drivers and passengers, believe me this was well tested with my passenger/photographer Phil...(he’s about 12 ft tall in his
socks) The front seats are mounted a long way apart so you won’t be rubbing shoulders with your passenger, a welcome relief for those with personal space issues. The twin 10-inch touchscreens are both a work of art and a touch of genius. When turned off, they’re flush black panels adding to the minimalist interior style. But when the car is switched on, the panels spring to life with crisp, high-definition displays, and the top unit swivels forward by 30 degrees to greet you. Integrated into the bottom of
People like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust
Written by Andrew Corrie the lower screen are two larger dials with their own LED displays, and a central volume knob. The bottom monitor controls the heating and ventilation as well as the advanced Terrain Response system, with the two dials working with either setting. The upper screen will take care of navigation, telephone and audio systems, while both screens are easy to use, swiping from one control to the next.
Driving the Velar is a great experience too, and for the size of it, it’s actually quite agile. The Velar has very little body roll, which helps you feel that the car is firmly planted onto the road. The 3.0 litre V6 Diesel that we tested has Adaptive Air Suspension as standard, and, as I set the suspension to off road, I was transported back in time to my dads old Citroen CX Familial, which would slowly raise itself up .. amazing really how advanced that old Citroen was back in 1985! To sum up, this is an incredibly stylish car packed with all the latest tech (it’s literally like driving your iPad) it’s big enough, very practical and a real pleasure to drive! eep inside the Arctic Circle and tucked away in northernmost Finland, Santa Claus’ homeland is the stuff of fairytales and will create memories that last a lifetime. Cosy log cabins to snow covered forests that stretch for miles, and a population that’s made up of more reindeer than people. Whether you’re in search of the Northern Lights or Santa Claus, Lapland really does have something to suit all tastes and there’s no better time to visit Lapland than when your little ones are still swept up in the magic of Christmas and a family holiday to Lapland wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the big man himself. One day trips generally run throughout December until Christmas Eve, with convenient departures from most northern airports, including Newcastle. Upon arrival, you will be met by your representative and whisked off through snow covered forests to a winter wonderland where you will put on your thermal suits and boots and head off into the snow for an action packed day. You’ll have a chance to sample a range of winter experiences that
are guaranteed to get you in the Christmas spirit. Whizz along on a sled pulled by energetic huskies or for the not so energetic, take a reindeer sleigh ride over the icy tundra. The highlight of the day of course is meeting Santa Claus himself. Each family will get to meet Santa in his log cabin , deep in the snow covered woods where you can share your Christmas wishes during a private family encounter. Transun offer day trips from £499 pp with one child going half price when travelling with two full fare paying passengers. Prices include return flights with hot meals, loan of thermal suit and boots, private family meeting with Santa and a small gift for children. Hot lunch, huskey experience, snowmobile adventure and reindeer sleigh ride.
Fact File
In December, daytime temperatures generally range from 0 to -20 degrees, but it can fall as low as -40 during a particularly cold spell. You’ll get four to five hours of ‘grey light’ between about 10am and 3pm, but the rest of the time it’s dark.

Christmas food dangers
for dogs
We all want to treat our animals at Christmas but be aware some Christmas treats can do more harm for your pet than others, here are some top tips for your dog this year.
T
he festive season should hopefully be a joyful time for the whole family, whether you have two legs or four! But we urge all the responsible pet owners out there to take extra care with all the tempting delights on offer. Over the festive period we find ourselves indulging in delicious treats such as mince pies and chocolate, and may find ourselves wishing to share these festive foods with our pets. Christmas cake, chocolate coins and alcohol are just three examples of things humans may love to enjoy lots of over Christmas, but which could prove fatal to a beloved pet. The best advice is to keep all those tasty treats we like so much out of reach from inquisitive dogs or cats and give your pet species-specific treats, which can be bought from
your local pet shop. Keeping human food away from your pets will help ensure you don’t have any unexpected vet trips during a time meant for celebration. Of course accidents can happen and if you suspect your pet has digested something harmful to them, seek veterinary attention immediately. Even if the local practice is closed, there will always be an out of hours service available. For more advice on Christmas and festive food please visit the advice section on our website: www.oaktreeanimals.org.uk or speak with your veterinary practice.

The bandage was wound around the wound. The farm was used to produce produce We must polish the Polish furniture. He could lead if he would get the lead out. The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert. Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present. A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. I did not object to the object. The insurance was invalid for the invalid. There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row. They were too close to the door to close it. To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. The wind was too strong to wind the sail. Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
We need your Christmas Trees please!
Are you having a real Christmas Tree this year within your home or business? Do you live or work in the CA1, CA2, CA3, CA4 8, CA5 6, CA5 7 postcode area? Following the success of last year, Hospice at Home is once again organising the festive fundraising initiative that not only recycles trees after the festive season but also hopes to raise vital funds for this local charity. The process is simple. Supporters book their tree collection via the event website (www.charityxmastreecollection.com) and make a donation of their choice to Hospice at Home. On Monday 8th January the Charity Team and Volunteers will collect the trees and take them to be recycled locally. No trips to the tip or needles in your car – just leave the trees in your front garden or outside your property and Hospice at Home will do the rest! The Charity hope this initiative will raise great funds to enable their Clinical Team to continue to provide a vital service in the North and East of Cumbria. Bridget McDonald, Fundraiser, said “We hope members of the community will support the appeal by booking their trees in for collection! We hope the initiative offers a simple solution to the task of disposing your tree that will also directly benefit people within our local area. The funds raised from the donations given will enable us to support and care for patients who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting and life-threatening illness”. The Charity would like to thank local businesses and Volunteers who have all supported this fundraiser. For more information about the Charity or the Christmas Tree Collections please visit www.hospiceathome.co.uk

BUYING AND PLANTING BARE- ROOT
TREES & SHRUBS local arborist Andrew Edgar, [orchard tree surgery and MAINTENANCE] shares his experience AND TIPS ON TREES AND SHRUBS you’re not going to have an opportunity to plant it within a few days, we’d suggest waiting before you buy it. Your plant might survive longer if you water it but you won’t be giving it the best start. Before planting your new plant, give it a soak while you dig the hole you want to plant it in. Your hole should be just deep enough that all the roots will be underground and the stem or trunk is above ground. Depending on the room you have available, you can make your hole up to three times as wide as the root system, to ensure the tree is not trying to establish itself in compacted soil.
I
f you’re looking to buy a new tree, including hedging plants and larger shrubs, you will probably find you have three options:
• Bare-rooted • Containerised (that is, in a pot) • Root-balled (usually having been root-pruned and wrapped in fabric) At this time of year, bare rooted plants are starting to become available to buy or pre-order. They will usually be cheaper than the other options and provide the opportunity to put plants in the ground outside of their growing season, when they will be less distressed. If we have a long winter, bare-root season can extend to early April but we’d suggest not leaving it as late as that. Your bare-root plant is likely to be between one and three years old. It should be wrapped in polythene or some other medium to prevent the roots drying out. Select a plant that has an even spread of root growth and which looks fairly well developed. Your plant will need planting as soon as possible to prevent it drying out and to get it established quickly. If you know
area is prone to rabbits or deer, think about adding a tree guard too. Give the whole area a good watering, even if it’s a wet day. Drought stress is common with newly planted trees and shrubs so make sure it doesn’t dry out during its first few years. It also helps to keep the area weeded, so it’s not competing with other plants, and you might want to fertilise or mulch the area during the winter to help it establish. (Don’t mulch right up to the trunk as that may cause rot). Finally, if you’re thinking about a new tree but aren’t sure what to choose, we like the Woodland Trust’s guide to native trees.
BARE-ROOTED PLANTS provide the opportunity to put plants in the ground outside of their growing season
Remove any wrappings from the roots and, if they are knotted or bound up, tease them out. Place the plant in the hole, supporting it at the correct height for the soil level, and refill around it, being careful to ensure you don’t leave air pockets. If it’s large enough or in an exposed position, think about adding a stake or support while it establishes itself. If your

n The Eye of Storms follows the history of Cumbria from the earliest times to the end of the Dark Ages. This is history without the boring bits and with a generous sprinkling of humour, legend, whimsy, satire and surrealism. The story begins with the post-glacial migrations and shows how the Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Norsemen all left their mark on the Cumbria of today. This is the third book by the author on the history of Cumbria. His previous titles are The Best Kept Secrets of the Western Marches and Room 22.

cLENCHING
T
CEL
EBR
Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland
o clench, or not to clench, that is the question: And, it seems, a jolly big question indeed. My neighbour, friend and class member Sarah (yes Sarah, this is you) has been blissfully clenching and, to my disbelief, for a considerable amount of time. How she can do this and breath is beyond me. I have been given no choice but to tell Sarah to stop. Clenching that is. The breathing bit is good. Why? Well, while Sarah clenches she is not allowing her postural muscles – the ones I want and need her to employ - to engage. After the initial debate wore off she is now fully aware of her failing and is promising (almost daily) to stop. To engage your postural muscles requires little more than awareness. Think about walking through a room naked. You wouldn’t do that with everything sagging or worse clenching. Or would you? I would say you would not. No, you would engage your deep postural muscles (secretly) and instantly stand taller shoulders back and down appearing elongated. Clenching does not have quite the same effect. I would imagine (I do not clench) that clenching makes it appear that you are chewing a wasp - metaphorically speaking. Has anyone noticed how many dopey wasps there are? One had the misfortune, or fortune depending on how you see it, of being squashed by Elaine, another of my lovely neighbours, whilst she rocked side to side during class. It reacted with anger; Elaine with shock. Fortunately, Castle Carrock village hall had cooling gel at hand, and it worked. Once those postural muscles are awake you will feel more comfortable. You will want to lengthen your spine and align your pelvis. It will feel odd not to. The support is in place. To re-educate can take – depending on your starting position – anything up to eleven months. Eleven months well spent for a lifetime of perfect posture. No clenching required.
