Welcome

hether you’re prepping blackberry puddings and crumbles at the mention of “September,” or in denial of the brisk nip in the air, there’s no doubt that autumn is upon us. Come to think of it, it seems to have been autumn all year? So it’s at this time of year, families exercise their ancient ‘freedom to forage’ rights, or go Blackberry picking to you and I (and I’m talking here about the fruit not the mobile variety). As kids, we loved walking through fields filling up our margarine tubs whilst getting told off by mum for eating too many. At least it’s free food! Tesco is currently charging £2.00 for 150g of blackberries. But they’re there for the taking at a hedge near you. Blackberries are normally at their best at the end of August to September. Like many things in life, the most successful blackberries will be ones that stand out from the crowd. They should be shiny and firm when you pick them. But remember to avoid bushes by busy roads or fruit low enough to be ‘watered’ by passing dogs. This autumn issue is packed with great features and giveaways. like to think I have come on leaps and bounds so far as cooking is concerned. For example, take the first apple pie I made as a teenager in which I forgot a main ingredient. Sugar! On taking a mouthful my brother ran into the garden and spat it out. He was duly reprimanded by my parents for being rude and ungrateful, but the general consensus was, it was inedible. Or the time when I was first married and invited my mum and dad for their first meal with us. For some strange reason I made gazpacho (a Spanish cold soup) which I am afraid did not go down very well at all. You have to understand,
I asked for the ‘middle of a lamb’ to which the butcher replied ‘the middle what of a lamb’?

we were in a little flat, in Carlisle, in winter, not in sunny Spain. ‘An acquired taste!’ I remember my Dad saying. I also remember finding a recipe that required ‘middle neck of lamb’, so off I went to the butcher to purchase some. On getting there I asked for the ‘middle of a lamb’ to which the butcher replied ‘the middle what of a lamb’ and for the life of me I could not remember. But this day and age we have no excuse. The other day when I was in a supermarket I heard a young woman ask her partner to look up what kind of rice goes into a paella, on which he took out his

phone and got the answer for her. Unfortunately mobile phones were not on the go at the time of my lamb debacle! Today however we can find recipes for all kinds. Take pumpkins for example. Apart from making decorations out of the carcass, from the flesh you can make things such as soup, risotto and of course pumpkin pie. But how about making a cake, after all we use carrots in cakes. Did you know that pumpkins are a fruit. A fruit is defined as being the part of the plant which contains seeds and the average pumpkin contains about a cup of seeds, so they are most definitely a fruit. Why not try the following cake. Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees/Gas 4. In a large bowl combine 110g margarine, 220g dark brown soft sugar, 140g SR flour, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, ½ tsp ground ginger, ½ tsp ground nutmeg, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 175g pumpkin puree and 2 beaten eggs. Mix well until smooth. Pour into lined 8” cake tin and bake for 25/30 minutes. Leave to cool. For the icing beat 100g butter until soft and then add 300g cream cheese, 100g icing sugar and 1 tsp vanilla essence and beat until smooth. Using a palette knife swirl on top of your cake. You could also make individual muffin cakes if you prefer. www.village-link.co.uk

Carlisle’s Past
Matthewman Hodgson Donald, Carlisle Cotton & St. Cuthberts Church Matthewman Hodgson Donald, born at Blaithwaite Hall near Wigton in 1822, built up an enviable reputation in the world of cotton. Matthewman’s home, Albert Villa, was one of the best situated houses in Carlisle. High on Cavendish Terrace, a world away from the nearby cottages at the junction of Brampton Road. His mother, Jane Donald, had connections and influence, both of which she used for the advancement of her sons. There were links with the Ferguson family and Matthewman’s place in the city was established through a loan of £5,000 from George Ferguson (after whom George Street was named) enabling him to enter partnership with the Fergusons. In 1857 a further loan came from Richard Ferguson of £30,000, an enormous sum in those days, and it enabled Matthewman with his four brothers to set up their own s n old cottage firm of ‘Donald tio nc ju ad Brampton Ro Brothers, Cotton Manufacturers’. They took over the Ferguson works in Backhouse Walk. Business flourished as a wide range of products came off the looms, including blue checked gingham which found its way back to the Southern States to clothe the slaves who picked the cotton. Matthewman was aware that Carlisle’s wealth was being built on the backs of slaves and cotton’s dependence upon slavery troubled Matthewman. But, he was providing employment for hundreds of people, not only those who worked in the factory, but handloom weavers who still operated on a piece-work basis in the front rooms of their cottages. was King in Carlisle, and there was little alternative. The development of factories, drawing power from the River Caldew in Denton Holme, required a breach to be made in the West Wall giving access into the City by means of a viaduct over the railway. Donald Brothers’ factory stood in the way of this project, and had to be relocated. In 1878 Donalds’ factory was put up for auction. The purchaser paid £5,000 for the site, and built the impressive Viaduct Hotel opposite a newly constructed access into the Railway Station. Donald Brothers moved into larger premises near Dixon’s Shaddon Mill. Steam soon replaced water power, and the works boasted 521 power looms, with winding frames and warping mills. Matthewman was deeply involved in Christian work. For 38 years he attended St Cuthbert’s Church in the Sunday School, later the Fawcett Schools. Here he taught a large class of young men, eager to absorb Matthewman’s teaching of faith, morals, discipline and character. He supported numerous local charities until, at Albert Villa on Christmas Day 1885, following a visit to the Blind institute in Lonsdale Street, he suffered a severe heart attack and died. A marble plaque, mounted at the foot of the gallery stairs in St. Cuthbert’s Church, preserves the memory of Matthewman, one of Carlisle’s finest men.

CASH ISA
Eclipse A change to taxes on savings puts Cash ISAs in the shade by Mike Turney [Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society]
W
hile the March Budget made Cash ISAs more flexible, next year’s introduction of the new Personal Savings Allowance abolishes tax on savings for 95%¹ of savers. Does that make the Cash ISA completely redundant? There have been two Budgets this year. The latest, in July, gave savers the freedom to withdraw and then replace money in their Cash ISAs in the same tax year without it counting towards that year’s annual subscription limit. Until now, any money taken out of an ISA promptly lost its tax-free status
anyone with taxable income of less than £16,800 won’t have to pay any tax on interest earned from their savings.
and couldn’t be replaced. The ISA allowance for the current tax year is £15,240. A landmark change in the earlier March Budget, however, may make the Cash ISA pointless for most savers. From April 2016, anyone with taxable income of less than £16,800 won’t have to pay any tax on interest earned from
their savings. From the same date, banks and building societies will stop automatically taking 20% in Income Tax from the interest earned on non-ISA savings. Instead, these earnings must be declared, and will be taxed via self-assessment through the introduction of a new ‘digital tax account’ early next year. But the introduction of the tax-free Personal Savings Allowance means that basic rate taxpayers won’t pay tax on their first £1,000 of interest. That falls to £500 for higher rate taxpayers, while additional rate taxpayers get no benefit. The Chancellor said that this would scrap savings taxes for 17 million people. Some observers have called this the “death knell” for Cash ISAs. When ISAs were first launched back in the late 1990s, cash savers could earn upwards of 7% tax-free. But with interest rates as low as they are now, the returns from deposit-based savings are negligible. The Personal
Savings Allowance dwarfs anything that might be earned in the early years of a Cash ISA. The average instant-access Cash ISA rate is a mere 1.01%. Anyone who deposits the maximum annual sum of £15,240 would earn interest of only £153² in the first year, well short of the new £1,000 Personal Savings Allowance. If and when interest rates go up, the gap would narrow, but savings rates would need to go well over 6% for Cash ISAs to pull ahead. Bank of England governor Mark Carney recently suggested that base rates might get back to 2% over the next three years. Indeed, with the Personal Savings Allowance, anyone paying basic rate tax would have to put £62,500 into the best-buy easy-access savings account³ before paying any tax on the interest. With the advent of the Personal Savings Allowance, the Cash ISA may finally have had its day. Today, UK investors

continue to use their valuable ISA allowance to invest in cash (nearly half of all ISAs subscribed to during 2014 were Cash ISAs). Yet history shows that the optimum way to generate decent long-term returns is by investing in those assets able to provide inflation-beating returns, such as equities. In our opinion, this represents the most sensible long-term strategy. The value of an ISA with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances. Equities do not have the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit with a bank, building society or cash ISA, as the value & income may fall as well as rise.

MOTORWAYS local arborist Andrew Edgar, from orchard tree surgery and landscape services, shares his KNOWLEDGE OF HEDGE MAINTENANCE
D
ANNUAL TRIMMING ue to the nature of hedge growth annual trimming is something that should be carried out on a regular basis. Dependant on the species this may require attention anywhere between once a year to three times a year. When asked to trim a hedge we will generally tidy up the appearance of the hedge by cutting back the previous years growth to give the hedge a uniform appearance. The overall size and shape of the hedge will however remain the same. On completion of the job all waste will be removed from site.
Hedge before trimming Hedge after trimming
HEDGE REDUCTION
Reducing a hedge is far more severe than simply trimming a hedge annually. This process will alter the size and if desired the shape of a hedge. This will generally be done when the hedge has outgrown its surroundings or where the hedge is now blocking a view. It also allows more light into surrounding area as by reducing the height of a hedge the shadow cast by the hedge is also reduced. Hedge before reduction Hedge after reduction
Hedge Removal
It is often desirable to remove a hedge completely, whether to allow for replanting or the establishment of a fence. The most common problem with hedge removal is that the root system is left in place which can allow for regrowth. We will cut the hedge down to root level before digging out the
8
entire root system. This will prevent the hedge from re-establishing itself over the coming years. All waste created during the process will be removed from site.
Importance of Hedgerows
Hedgerows are nature’s motorways ... they’re the means an example of green infrastructure - by which wildlife in all its biodiversity moves throughout the land. Small mammals, insects, butterflies, plants and even birds use hedgerows to travel from one region to another. The hedgerow provides a corridor along which to move, shelter from the elements, find safety from predators and a supply of food. So wherever hedgerows are removed or damaged, nature loses its means of travel, its source of sustenance, and becomes isolated and more vulnerable
Hedgerows as Habitat Hedgerows are a habitat for many native plant and animals species. A well-managed hedgerow can safeguard the habitats contained therein. A wide variety of plant species will in turn support a wide variety of bird and animal life, including both large and small mammals.
Maintenance of Hedgerows
To provide an effective livestock barrier, a hedgerow needs to be maintained by trimming back and replanting as necessary and by hedge-laying or coppicing to encourage new growth from ground level. A balance needs to be found since frequent trimming can help to keep the hedgerow dense but treeless, whereas neglect can result in the hedgerow becoming overgrown with tall trees and gaps.

utterworths Solicitors have had a presence in Cumbria for 20 years now, but the start of 2015 heralded a new era for our Penrith Branch, with expansion from three staff to 11 in the space of a few short months. We are now able to offer a full range of services from our premises in Penrith, with our main focus being Conveyancing and Private Client work. Our Penrith office is conveniently located in the town centre, but thanks to Penrith’s excellent transport links, we are also able to serve the wider rural area with our team being more than happy to attend clients in their own home. Our Private Client work in Penrith involves Wills, Estate Administration, Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection work. You will be aware from our earlier columns of the importance of making or reviewing your Will, and the advantages of preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney. Making a Will is something that is very easy to put off, but it is so important in ensuring your assets are distributed in accordance with your wishes, rather than according to the rules of intestacy. If you have already made a Will, making sure that it is reviewed regularly and kept up to date following any change in circumstances, either your own or those of someone named in your Will, is equally important.
Having a Lasting Power of Attorney correctly prepared can mean the difference between an easy transition Nicola Broyan for your Attorney to take over the running of your affairs and the frustration of a lengthy Court of Protection application for your family if you were to lose your mental capacity. Giving consideration to this now should be a priority; even if you have made an Enduring Power of Attorney in the past, which will still be valid, you should discuss with us whether a Lasting Power of Attorney would be of benefit to you. Penrith’s conveyancers deal with both residential and commercial matters, and we aim to make the process of buying and selling property as simple as possible. We understand that property transactions can be stressful, but our team will strive to reduce this as much as possible. If you are considering buying or selling a property, telephone us for a competitive quote. You can contact our Penrith office on 01768 868989 For Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney, please ask to speak to Nicola Broyan For conveyancing queries, please ask to speak to Rob Mason.

TRAINING Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland

as anyone noticed? Has anyone questioned this unforgiveable attack? Does nobody care? I ask because I am exhausted. Exhausted and battle weary. Twice weekly I fight against it and then become almost air borne with its power. The wind. Ferocious. I am concerned that maybe we are not paying it enough attention. All merrily noticing but not really noticing then WHAM! Who knew! It will sneak up from behind and we will all have been transported to who knows where.
Pushing against a raging head wind is free resistance training Of, course I am allowing my vivid imagination to get the better of me. But I may have a point. It is well documented that I walk my three dogs daily. We take a walk that ventures up high. Perfect to work out wind direction. We head west, then south. The prevailing. Every race day I pay particular attention to the wind direction I analyse. I work out where will I be assisted and where will I have to ‘dig in’. A favourite cycling term. There has been two calm days thus this year. Two days where there was nothing of note. As I write I can tell you that it is a strong southerly and that as we race tonight in our mid-week ’10’ mile time trial we will push into it all the way to the turn. Then get blown back at some speed. Delving deeper I discover that the whole country has experienced fifteen calm days this year. Where twenty weather stations have recorded readings of less than 11mph. Unheard of. At risk of straying into unchartered territory I am of the belief that my trees (all of junior age) are having a rough time too. Advised to remove their stabilisers they are now hanging on for dear life. This, I am told, is good for them. Good for them? It encourages their roots to become strong. I can’t argue that it is fantastic training and not just for the trees. Pushing against a raging head wind is free resistance training. You would pay a small fortune for such a delight in a wind tunnel. So I say we should all get out there and embrace the howling gales that are defining 2015 and the moment this goes to press; calm. S
ri Lanka and the Maldives are Indian Ocean paradises with Idyllic Islands, charming cities and ancient treasures. From diving in crystal clear waters to wildlife safaris or just relaxing on your own romantic honeymoon hideaway, Sri Lanka and the Maldives offer both Luxury and adventure. Most UK flights arrive at the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, with the nearby beach of Negombo an ideal stop off before or after a tour. There’s a swathe of stunning golden beaches as well as hotels, restaurants and bars. Whether you take a guided tour or hire your own driver, Sri Lanka’s tour guides are warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. Many tours start at the historic centre of Sri Lanka at the ancient capital Habarana with plenty of well preserved ruins as well as wildlife opportunities. Most people will want to visit
nearby Sigiriya Rock, a huge monument of stone with an ancient city scattered beneath it. The Golden Temple of Dambulla is close by and is the best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Galle has so much to offer from whale watching and wildlife safaris, to Buddhist temples, tea plantations and if you’re a sports fanatic try to fit in a test match at the world famous cricket ground. Wherever you stay in Sri Lanka you can be sure of a friendly welcome, excellent quality food and accommodation at reasonable prices.
Kurumathi is a good choice for families. The island boasts three main buffet restaurants, a floodlit tennis court and plenty of swimming pools. Getting to the Maldives is relatively simple with flights from Newcastle to Dubai, before heading down to Male. The islands can be expensive so an all inclusive package often represents best value for money. Don’t forget that Dawson and Sanderson can tailor make a package to ensure you have the ultimate Indian Ocean adventure.
The Maldives
Just a two hour flight from Sri Lanka, each idyllic island is home to its own resort with pristine white sand beaches, cooling clear waters and endless horizons. Just 10 minutes by water taxi from the capital Island Male is Kurumba, a popular choice with traditional style and great value. The island has eight restaurants and three bars, all just a few feet from the cooling water’s edge. Further afield is Maafushivaru which ticks every box for getting away from it all. With its own house reef, waterside villas and excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities, Maaf is truly your own private hideaway.

Business finances at your fingertips
How would it make you feel to know the financial position of your business when you want to? Would this lead to positive results for your business? Once it was difficult and expensive for businesses to get this information, with the advances in accounting software it is often more efficient to use it rather than not, never mind the benefits.
T
he caricature of accountants as boring has been given a scientific basis by researchers who say the language we use and the environment in which we work are, frankly, grey. The study said that the “dull and uninspired, jargonheavy language”, including such words and phrases as “mitigate” and “provisional tax liability”, is partly responsible for our dusty image. At SeavorChartered though, we believe accountants are not boring people; we just get excited about boring things. Many business owners meet with their accountant just once a year to discuss the business financials and how much tax there is to pay. We though, prefer to work with business owners throughout the year, to help them take control of their finances and understand how their business is performing. One way we achieve this is by using online accounting software. Ever heard Graeme Seavor

Cycling gets your legs moving and heart pumping without pounding your joints. While running has the potential to take its toll on the body, cycling is a much smoother lower risk form of cardio without the continuous impact on your knees, etc.
Reduces stress.
Much research supports the idea that exercise helps reduce stress. Added to that, when you are cycling you are not doing most of the things that are causing you stress in the first place!
Makes you feel better
16-70 Seater Coaches for Air & Seaport Transfers, Private Hire, Day Trips and Special Events
Feeling lethargic? Go for a brisk 30 minute cycle ride in the country side and see if you still feel the same. It shouldn’t be a surprise if you feel a whole lot better because
many testify that cycling gives them that “feel good” factor.
Lose weight & get exercise!
Regular exercise and a calorie controlled diet. How often we read these words. Daily cycling, even if it is only a short journey to and from work, will help you achieve your goal. The right exercise, regularly, keeps us healthy. Keeping motivated for exercise is often a problem. Because cycling is enjoyable it is easier to keep doing it.
