Welcome

or some of us, it's time to say goodbye to sleeping in and hello to hauling your children out of bed so you can attempt to get to school on time. In much the same way no two children are the same, so it is with the school run. Apparently, according to one report, mums and dads fall into six different categories – which parent are you? WhatsApp parent. Always late, always disorganised, depends on the class WhatsApp group for absolutely everything. Usually found WhatsApping at 9pm on a Sunday night to check which homework has to be handed in on Monday morning. Instagram parent. Arrives polished and preened with three picture-perfect kids. Bouncy hair, dazzling megawatt smile, endless supply of enviable, fashionable new clothes. Snaps a "what I wore on the school run selfie" each day. Activewear parent. Always clad in tight Lycra and the latest mesh-panel leggings. Runs to school, jogs on the spot at drop off, and can’t wait to "drop and dump" so they can get on with their exercise regime. (Often found in packs with other activewear types). Crafty parent. Always brings in recycling and expertly done homework craft creations. Feared at bake sales for producing handmade, perfectly iced and decorated cupcakes. Wrinkles their nose at your Tesco packed sponge cakes. Work at home trendy type. Often seen in cycling gear or dressed like an ageing hipster in T-shirt and shorts. Talks loudly about their freelance work and invites themself to the parents’ coffee shop meet-ups. Drive-by parent. Harassed and stressed, they park on the double yellow lines outside the school gates and throw the kids out of the car before roaring off. Kids always still munching on a slice of toast as they haven’t had a proper breakfast. It wouldn't be right to overlook the heroic golden oldies category who’ve swapped retirement for hardcore childcare duties so mum and dad can work. They are always seen slowly making their way home, laden with children’s scooters and saying “don’t tell mum’ while dishing out big bags of Haribo's at pick-up time. Congratulations to our last issue winners – Scarlet who found Winston and to Annabelle who won £25 Andrew Corrie when she found Bear. EDITOR

HISTORY

THE DAY THE TRAM GOT STUCK IN DENTON STREET!

Tram stuck under Denton Street bridge

A

single electric tramway with passing places ran over the viaduct and for the full length of Denton Street. Trams ran every 10 minutes from 30 June 1900 until 21 November 1931. Single decker trams were used because the bridge clearance under the Canal Branch railway bridge was only 12ft 11 in. The first trams were in a chocolate-brown and cream livery but these were replaced in 1912 by new vehicles which were dark green and cream, lined out in cream and red.

Ambulance trapped in Denton Street in 2005

In a test run on 29 June 1900 the first tram got stuck under the railway bridge. See the photograph with onlookers, which probably marked this occasion. The road surface under the bridge was lowered in 1954 when Ribble double decker motor buses came into Denton Holme. Today, although the bridge was removed in 1974 after the closure of the railway, the road still has a large dip in it and this is where an ambulance got stuck in the 2005 floods. There were accidents and in February 1903 three boys ran in

front of a tram when it was in motion. The driver cut off the power and applied the emergency brake but the tram hit the last boy who had both legs severed. He died in the infirmary soon afterwards. More about the social history of Denton Holme can be found in the book ‘Denton Holme’ available from P3 Publications website, Bookends, Tullie House and Carlisle Visitor Centre.

FOOD

JANE’S KITCHEN Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

M

y mum recently said to me, ‘This is not an old people’s world’, which I thought was quite sad, but I have to say I totally agree with her. She said this after we had been for a coffee to a café, which is very popular with elderly ones. We had to wait at the entrance to be shown to a seat, which was fair enough. We were then told we had to scan a QR code, which was on a card on the table, order what we wanted on-line and then pay for it on-line. I actually struggled to do this but did eventually manage after much tutting and moaning, but there is no way my mum would have been able to even order a coffee. At every turn, it is getting more difficult, as we have to rely on technology more and more, which doesn’t come that easy to a lot of us. And don’t even get me started on passwords which are the bane of my life. In addition, to make matters even worse, for some sites even a password isn’t enough, you then have to have a memorable word. The list goes on and on and in all

honesty, it’s exhausting. However, it isn’t going to change any time soon, so my list of passwords and memorable words continues to grow. I might need to invest in a safe to put them in, as my old brain certainly can’t remember them all! Talking of my mum, she will readily admit that she doesn’t particularly enjoy cooking, but when we were growing up there was always a homemade meal for the family ready every night. In our house, the go to cook book at the time was by someone called Robert Carrier. He was an American chef, restaurateur and cookery writer and here is one of his recipes. ‘Paprika Chicken’. Get one whole chicken, rinse and pat dry (his recipe said two young chickens, about 2½ pound each,

but I think one chicken should be enough to serve a family). Cut the chicken into serving pieces (although you could just buy chicken legs and thighs), and season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Heat 110g butter in heatproof casserole and add one chopped onion. Cook the onion until transparent and then stir in 1 tbsp paprika. Add the chicken pieces and cook slowly until golden then cover and cook for 20 minutes or until the chicken is almost tender. Sprinkle on 1 tbsp flour and 425ml chicken stock (his recipe said white stock) and 1tbsp tomato puree. Stir well and cover. Bring to the boil and simmer for further 20 minutes. Remove the chicken to a serving dish. Stir 150ml double cream and the juice of half a lemon into the casserole, stir well and cook for 5 minutes, without allowing the sauce to come to the boil. Pour over the chicken and serve with some new potatoes and fresh vegetables. Jane ferguson

Dog Fouling Problem WRITTEN BY STUART EDGAR [oscar pet foods]

H I had a neck brace fitted years ago and I've never looked back since.

ere at Oscar Pet Foods Carlisle, we love seeing people out and about with their doggie friends, as responsible dog owners, the care we give our adorable four-legged friends includes feeding, walking, grooming, playing and, most importantly, clearing up after them. We can all do our bit to help keep our local area clean. We have noticed over the last months the number of notices around the local area in relation to Dog Poo and it not being cleaned up. Picking up dog mess is an unavoidable part of dog ownership and an essential task. Abandoned dog mess can be a big problem in dog walking areas. It is offensive if stepped in and can ruin local parks, beaches and countryside. Failing to clear up after your dog can spoil the public’s enjoyment of the environment around them and leads to complaints which result in dogs being banned from local areas. Everybody loses out. Here are some important things to

remember and some simple steps to prevent dog mess becoming a nuisance: Picking up after your dog prevents the transmission of intestinal infections and diseases to other dogs and people. Roundworm and hookworm can be transmitted to children and adults who play or work where faeces is present. In warm summer months, abandoned faeces leaves an offensive odour. Get into the habit of taking a couple of poop scoop bags with you when you go out on a walk. Keep them with your dog’s lead or in your dog-walking jacket. Local authorities have the power to enforce Dog Fouling By-Laws. A person in-charge of a dog on a walk has a legal responsibility to pick up after that dog. Failure to pick up after your dog can result in a fine of up to £1000. If you would like some FREE poopa scoop bags just drop us a message. We will drop some into you next time we are passing.

TRAVEL GUIDE

J

TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK CAN ADVISE ON HOW TO TRAVEL SAFELY

ust like that, our summer is almost over and school will be starting again. Did you blink and miss it, or were you lucky enough, like some of my clients have been, to actually get away and have a well deserved holiday? The sands are shifting, I can sense it. There is more confidence out there. I’m getting ready for the great big bounce back of pent up demand and people wanting to travel. The last travel review mid August was the most positive one I have seen. More countries went to our green traffic light, the ruling has come into force which means that double vaccinated travellers can now return from an amber listed country without having to self isolate.

The UAE has now become amber, so that opens up Dubai and Abu Dhabi for some winter sun. Slowly but surely more countries are happy to have us back. In the past week alone, Austria, Norway and Denmark have opened their borders to double-jabbed travellers.

For cruising fans, international cruising is now allowed again after being banned by our government since March 2020. I’m definitely getting more interest for 2022 holidays, and

I’ve got a steady stream of people heading off on staycations, to Croatia, Greece, Canaries over the next few months. Travel isn’t just about having a holiday, although that’s a good enough reason; so important for mental wellbeing and relaxation. Just booking a holiday gives you a different feeling, you have something to look forward to and get excited about. Travel is also about reuniting families. I’ve got new clients who are heading to Copenhagen soon – they haven’t seen their son for 12 months. I had a lady who went to South Africa in March to work for

you might pay a bit more for my services, but you won’t get that kind of service from booking onlinE a family business – she had to be back in August for a family event. That was a tricky one. If she had come directly back from South Africa to England, that would have been 10 days hotel quarantine. After doing all my research, I routed her via Greece, where she spent her 10 days prior to returning. It didn’t all go to plan, despite me giving her the best advice and information. She missed one of her connecting flights, so she rang me at 6am, I was still asleep. I came downstairs, fired up my laptop, and within 20 minutes had rebooked a flight for her. That’s why you might pay a bit more for my services, but you won’t get that kind of service from booking online. Travel is also about getting from A to B and getting your life back on track. Zoom has been great and has served a purpose, but there are certain things that just can’t be

People like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust

done via the internet. Another new client is a professional golf caddy – he flew out to the US last week to caddy for a well known Senior South African golf player. Travel is also about making connections with different cultures, and experiencing new and different things, enriching lives. Beach holidays will always have their place, but why not do a different type of holiday when you’re ready to travel again. Do that bucket list holiday that you’ve been putting off for years, take a safari, sleep out under the stars, go on that walking holiday. Make your travel more sustainable, make your next travel matter. Whatever your reason for travelling, do get in touch. As ever, I’m here with the latest advice and can take the hassle and stress away for you. All you have to do is turn up. There has never been a better time to use the services of a trusted travel professional. I can guide you through all the travel requirements, and I'll be here for you every step of the way.

Quality, bespoke dentures direct to the public

“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.” JOANNA M

LOCAL BUSINESS

Maximise your residential let property Is it time to reconsider the ownership structure of your residential let property?

I

ndividuals and couples who let out residential property will have seen their net returns decrease over recent years as the restrictions on mortgage interest relief have taken affect. In some instances, where there is a high loan to value ratio, there may even be an overall net cash outflow. As the mortgage interest restriction does not apply to companies who operate a property letting business, it may be worth considering whether an alternative ownership structure would be beneficial and whether or not to create a limited liability partnership (LLP), incorporate the business, transfer the property to a trust, or set up a property management company.

There are a number of factors which need to be considered before making any such decisions including: • The administrative burden and cost of creating and operating an LLP, company or trust including the impact on current and future borrowings, bank charges and fees, costs of preparing accounts, tax returns and Companies House requirements. • Tax charges which may arise including capital gains tax and stamp duty land tax (or land and buildings transaction tax in Scotland). • Potential future liabilities such as inheritance tax. There is no right or wrong answer to this conundrum. The best solution is to ‘do the numbers’. It may be that there is

an upfront tax cost, however it is likely that this can be offset by many years of income tax savings and possibly inheritance tax savings. Another way of maximising mortgage interest relief is to let the property as an Airbnb or furnished holiday let. Provided the relevant criteria are met then full relief will be available for the mortgage interest paid. However, there are plenty of other considerations to take into account and not just the tax when comparing operating a residential let to a furnished holiday let. If you think that your property portfolio (even if only one property) needs a tax review why not contact us to see if we can help you maximise your income.

GARDEN

Casting a Critical Eye

W

Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort

e have all done it! That is, cast a critical eye over our gardens when late August arrives and wondered what went wrong. Reflecting on how beautifully the spring went with all the lovely tulips and the brilliance and colour of early summer only to see our borders looking a bit worse for wear, a bit ragged and decidedly lacking something or other! Well, my advice is perhaps not to be so critical, but rather adopt a slightly more philosophical approach. Gardening is a curious and wonderful pastime which is part science and part art. Seasons vary, and our planets’ climate is in flux. There is no getting it right but certainly there are lessons learned. What might work well one year may not the next. Dry summers or wet ones we need to adopt a flexible approach to our gardening. Practically speaking there are a few things we should do, which will invariably help to keep our gardens colourful and healthy and see less of the scragginess often associated with late summer. First and foremost how often do you dead-head? My question is based on the fact that gardeners who fail to dead-head through the summer are most likely to be disappointed at the lack of flowering come August and September.

Now I know from experience that many regard this task as a bit tedious, but I would encourage you to see it as an opportunity to get close to your garden. It enables us to study our plants cut out any dead or pest infested growth, and it will greatly reward us with lots more blooms. In the case of roses and geraniums it is essential, but basic botany tells us that putting off a plants ability to set seed and therefore complete its seasonal role is to encourage it to continue blooming. Many varieties of hardy geranium can be encouraged to bloom until November if they are regularly dead-headed. Associated operations in the garden consist of tidying up straggly stems on herbaceous perennials and pruning to encourage a later flush of flowers. This works well on the Anthemis genus which is part of the aster family which with careful removal of the dying flowers will often flower again. Others include Phlox’s and Delphiniums.

Much can also be gained by feeding our plants throughout the summer. A general garden fertilizer will do, and making sure our plants have adequate water at their roots is essential to maintain flowering. Remember any stress to a plant prompts it to complete its seasonal life and set seed. But perhaps the most important thing we should be doing is to record our gardens throughout the season. Make notes about what grew well and what didn’t. Look at the gaps as the season progresses, and think how to improve flowering continuity. If some plants are continually infested with pests then consider alternatives for next year. If certain varieties are prone to mildew then look for alternatives. Look at the overall structure of the borders, noting where one plant is perhaps too tall or too short. Think about the balance of colour. Now is the time to think about all these things before all the colour has gone and we forget what the garden looked like! It is very easy to do without making a physical record. Lastly, take a little time this summer to visit gardens to get a little inspiration. No amount of reading gardening books or watching TV programmes is a substitute for looking at an actual garden. Enjoy your garden and pat yourself on the back for what went well. Happy gardening

WRITTEN BY MUSIC EDITOR AUSTIN POWELL

T

wenty years after he chalked up his first hit in Britain, Johnny Mathis was back on our charts in a big way, both with hit singles and, more importantly, bestselling albums. Behind this rather bland title of Four Albums On Two Discs lie fortyfour tracks released across four albums in 1978 and 1979, a time in which Mathis proved he had real staying power and wasn't afraid to rise to a challenge in a world very different to that in which he first made his mark. Too Much, Too Little, Too Late, his duet with Deneice Williams made the Top 3 as would the album which included a second duet with Williams (the Bee Gees song Emotions) and a second Bee Gees song, How Deep Is Your Love. You Light Up My Life had been a hit the previous year, but Mathis proves the song has real quality while Where Or When (written in 1937) is perhaps more usual fare for Mathis, but isn't out of place among more contemporary songs. The album That's What Friends Are For, on which he's partnered again by Deneice Williams, was also a Top 20 best seller and contained another slew of contemporary

songs including You're All I Need To Get By, Just The Way You Are and Stevie Wonder's song Until You Come Back To Me. Mathis and Williams are on top form again. Gone, Gone, Gone was the lead track on Best Days Of My Life and a Top 20 hit in 1979. Would You Like To Spend The Night With Me should have been a single, catchy with a neat hook. He's back in his old song book on Begin The Beguine and As Time Goes By; another finely balanced album. Mathis Magic didn't contain any hit singles, but is no worse for that. Listen to New York State of Mind or She Believes In Me, (as good as Kenny Rogers' version any day). Night And Day is given a contemporary makeover as is That Old Black Magic. Mathis is a class act and this CD release captures that class perfectly. Highly enjoyable on several levels. Austin Powell has spent his entire working life in the music business. Prepare now for your Spring Garden LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AND TIPS ON CARING FOR TREES AND SHRUBS

A

s we head out of one of the hottest summers on record into the cooler Autumn and Winter months, ensuring our trees and shrubs are primed to cope with the transition, will give your garden a better chance to thrive next Spring. Here are a few simple things you can do to prep for the Autumn and Winter months: Pruning at the right time for each type of tree or shrub is crucial – Please always double check your tree or shrubs specific needs. However, a general rule for most Summer (May through August) deciduous flowering shrubs and trees is that they will need pruning in the late Autumn or throughout the Winter between Jan to March. Flowering Cherries can be pruned in the late Summer and Conifers in the Autumn. Make sure dead branches are removed. Any damaged or diseased branches need to be removed also. Remove any suckers

to stop unwanted spreading and energy sapping of the main plant or tree. Removing suckers should be done all year round however, not only at this time of year. Finally, look at the overgrowth, if the branches are stretching out over pathways, patios or if the growth is starting to become invasive or protruding, these areas need pruning back. If you are unsure of how exactly to prune, please speak to a professional, as if done incorrectly, pruning can kill off a plant or tree for good. Newly planted trees are susceptible to harsh cold Winters. Keeping them moist but not waterlogged will be essential in their growth throughout the first couple of years. Mulching can help with this. It locks moisture in on dryer days, it helps reduce

the number of weeds around the roots and helps prevent any frost getting into the soil.

Spread around 3 inches of bark, peat, compost, or other organic material around the tree. If there is going a particularly severe winter in your area, you could go one step further and put up some plastic sheeting as protection, pin each side down to the ground with wooden pegs or use a large plastic bag over the top on those nights that are forecast to be freezing. The beginning of Autumn is a great time to plant trees, perennials, bulbs, and shrubs – the soil should be warm and moist from the Summer season, and the air temperatures will have cooled - the perfect balance for planting new trees or shrubs. A vibrant Azalea or fragrant Daphne will bring a muchneeded boost to your Autumn Garden. Or try a climbing Clematis, with its many species there is something to suit everyone. Come Spring next year you’ll be thankful for putting in the effort over the Winter months.

Mum & Daughter tackle 'Gelt Gladiator' for charity

Emma & daughter Robin in their fancy dress outfits

T

here are few, if any, areas left untouched due to COVID-19, and sadly, the impact on our local charities has been devastating. With this in mind, local mum and daughter, Emma and Robin, have signed up to partake in the upcoming 'Gelt Gladiator 2021' (September 18th & 19th) dressed as a bottle of wine & a block of cheese – in order to raise as much money as they can for local charity, Eden Valley Hospice. Emma says "I have to admit, the last time I can remember running anywhere was around the playing field at school in the late 80's, so the idea of competing in an outdoor mud running event is a little terrifying.

But, we are living in very difficult and challenging times, and this wonderful charity needs our support more than ever. Eden Valley Hospice is dedicated to caring and supporting local people with life limiting illnesses and conditions. Jigsaw is Cumbria's Children's Hospice, caring for children and young people, also with life limiting conditions.

If you would like to show your support to Emma & Robin, please donate whatever you can to the charity by visiting: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/ Emma-Robin (Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity).

Jumper or just a shirt?” morning. Should last until mid-September by which time there’ll only be one answer. I heard that by law you have to turn on your car lights when it's raining in Sweden.
