Welcome
A
s we head into the spectacular season of Autumn, the Virginia Creeper foliage, which graces the front of my whole house, changes into the most spectacular vivid, bright red colour. Whilst there’s no denying how beautiful a sight this is, its countdown time as literally, the whole lot falls into my garden and drive within a couple of weeks. I’ve used many tools in the past to collect this biblical amount of leaves – from rakes, tarpaulins, paying small children to collect them (that never works), my trusty wooden handled sweeping brush that has been left outside for years so the slightest bit of pressure sees the brush head falling off, to last year - trying a leaf blower. Whilst blasting the leaves in the air at a mph greater than a category five hurricane, I realised the machine was also whipping up a lot of hazardous particles and contaminants from the ground, sending them hither and yon, not to mention directly into my lungs. I guess if you don’t mind sucking in hydrocarbons from petrol, animal droppings, spores, fungi, pollens, pesticides and herbicides, fertilizers, brake-lining dust and tyre residue and heavy metals—all of which can lead to respiratory illnesses like lung disease and/or heart attacks—then you’ll be fine. For me, though, by far the best way I’ve found to get rid of the leaves is my petrol lawnmower for three reasons, 1) it’s got an engine which runs on petrol so of course it’s going to be great and 2) it’s so satisfying making clear paths through all the leaves and 3) it’s already chopped and shredded to go straight in your composter. Happy days! Congratulations to Jake aged 5 who found all the Winston’s, James aged 4 who found Bear in Houghton and Mr Randall who won the Robin Hood book. Finally, thank you for the positive feedback to the ‘new-look’ Village Link Magazine. Your comments are really valued and appreciated.

CARLISLE’S PAST
HISTORY
the pride of lorton vale written by david ramshaw
The Lorton Yew in 2018 with bobbin mill to the right
Low Lorton Bridge washed away in 2009
here are two villages in Lorton Vale, Low Lorton, next to the River Cocker and High Lorton above and to the east and, as its name suggests, is safe from flooding unlike its neighbour. High Lorton is famous for the Lorton Yew, described by Wordsworth as follows: “There is a Yew tree, pride of Lorton Vale, which to this day stands single, in the midst of its own darkness, as it stood of yore. Of vast circumference and gloom profound. This solitary tree! a living thing, produced too slowly ever to decay; of form and aspect too magnificent to be destroyed.” This poem probably saved the tree. In 1898 Edmund Bogg
hall in High Lorton. Incidentally the large barn-like building, which is now the village hall, was originally a bobbin mill and later a well-known local brewery, now based in Cockermouth.

described the tree as being “now only a wreck of its former glory.” He continues: “In its pride and strength the trunk measured twenty four feet in circumference; one of its own branches was some years ago wrenched off right down to the ground. At another time the tree was actually sold for fifteen pounds to a cabinet maker from Whitehaven, and two men began to stub it up, but fortunately a gentleman from Cockermouth, hearing of its proposed destruction, made overtures to the owner, and thus preserved, though shorn of its ancient dignity, the pride of Lorton Vale.” The tree can still be seen today on the green behind the village

FOOD
JANE’S KITCHEN
A
Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson
s I mentioned in my last blog I love the long days and blue skies. On the other hand, I have to admit that every single year the warmer weather takes me by surprise. Let me explain. On the odd days it is hot (or as hot as it can be in this country) I get a sense of foreboding for a number of reasons. I suppose the main one is what do I wear. Being a red head with freckles and not exactly a ‘twiggy’ it really is a dilemma. I am not lying when I say I try on about five different outfits before I feel comfortable to go out in public. Also, I can’t cope with my lily white legs, (you would see me coming a mile off) so each time I shower I need to tan them. It’s exhausting. Personally I never sit in the sun. I love being outside, but always find a shady spot, or a parasol to sit under, even when I’m abroad. Recently though, my husband and I had a couple of days away in Robin Hood’s Bay which I have to say is absolutely gorgeous. We spent a day in nearby Whitby which we really enjoyed and the weather was glorious. That What do you get when you mix 3.14159 with a lemon? Lemon Pie.
evening, my neck, arms and face were bright red and I looked like a belisha beacon. I didn’t think to put sun cream on, after all we were still in the north of England!! And it really doesn’t help either when people say ‘Aw, that looks sore’. Oh to be one of those people who tan naturally and effortlessly, how I do envy them. I suppose the only positive is that I wasn’t abroad and bitten to death by mosquitos as I normally
am. Another of my glamorous looks, but that’s a whole other story. On to food. This is the season of gorgeous fruits – redcurrants, blackcurrants, raspberries, strawberries, so let’s make the most of them. This is a great cheesecake recipe I found which works every time. Heat your oven to 180°/160°c fan. Grease 2lb loaf tin and line with grease proof paper. Smash 200g shortbread biscuits into breadcrumbs. Add 50g melted butter, mix well and then press into the base of the tin. Beat 600g soft cheese, 200g crème fraiche and 1tsp vanilla extract. Next mix in 175g golden caster sugar, 2tbsp plain flour and 2 eggs. Pour mix into tin and bake in your pre-heated oven for 10 minutes, then turn the oven down to 120°C/100°C fan and cook for a further 1 hour 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it cool in the oven. Decorate with mixed fruit and serve with cream. Summer on a plate.

Warwick Bridge Corn Mill THE RESTORATION
T
his historic corn mill is at least 600 years old and has served its time providing flour, bread and animal feedstuffs for many centuries. In times past it was owned by the “Lords of the Manor” when a fishery was part of the surrounds of the corn mill. The estate of the Salkeld family of Corby Castle and Lanercost Priory were in receipt of tithes from the mill. The mill underwent refurbishment in 1802 costing £750 and more rebuilding took place in 1839. For another 150 years the mill was in use supplying the needs of the human population and local farmers. Over the last 30 years while empty and unused it has been crumbling and decaying. Fast forward to 2015 when the North of England Civic Trust bought this historic grade 2* listed building to save it from further dilapidation costing £2.5m to
restore it. Funded by Historic England, the Heritage Lottery fund and other grant making bodies, their mission is to restore the fabric of the building, the mill race, the water wheel and the milling machinery for future generations. Hard work, long hours with an innate knowledge of traditional skills and dedication has to be the attributes of a successful and contented miller. The last one was Bob Willis who lived in the Mill House and had to retire through ill health in 1989. In 1991 Bob sold the mill to a property developer who saw the opportunity to build houses on the land now named Waters Meet.
Now, with restoration work nearly completed, the mill is scheduled to be up and running in September this year with a lady miller Karen Mason in charge. After studying Archaeology at university, Karen trained at Heron corn mill in Lancashire where she was taught maintenance and the running of historic equipment, so she has had plenty of hands-on experience. A steering committee has been formed to ensure the mill retains its place in the heart of the Village and contributes to the local economy. Flour sales and bread making will be the obvious activities. Guided tours of the mill will be offered and advertised in the coming months. Maintaining the mill by the community is considered to be an important objective and a share ownership scheme is envisaged. Outline plans can be obtained from the Chairman philipjhealy@hotmail.com.

POCKET MONEY Ian Forth and Christine Lloyd run the local branch of The Furness Building Society in Brampton

ith the new school year upon us, our thoughts have turned from holidays to new school uniform, new hobbies and often new school trips. These ongoing costs can be expensive items to budget for so particularly popular at this time of year are savings accounts for children and young people. This is a great way to create ‘the habit’ of saving for something special from a very early age. Pocket Money Accounts and Young Saver Accounts actively encourage saving every week or every month - seeing the balance in the book going up every time money is paid in, no matter how large or small the amount towards their savings goal.
15 things kids spent their pocket money on in the 70s, 80s and 90’s With the rise of smartphones and tablets, kids are saving their pocket money to buy far more sophisticated things than we did back in the day. 70’s: Vimto, Fizz Wiz, a space hopper, Blackjacks, Figurini Panini sticker albums 80’s: Masters of the Universe comics (He-Man for boys, She-Ra for girls. obvs), Arcade Games (Donkey Kong to Pac-Man), Smash Hits, Pez, Rubix Cube 90’s: Now that’s what I call music (once you got your Discman, you saved your pocket money for one of these bumper compilations.), Panda Pop, Pokemon Cards.

Once this habit of saving is formed it stays with them for life Sometimes this is from pocket money or for jobs done around the home or maybe even part of their birthday or Christmas money. Our young customers save for all sorts of things, to buy Mum and Dad birthday and Christmas gifts, a new piece of equipment for their favourite hobby, next holidays spending money, a specific toy they really, really want or as they get older, for driving lessons or towards a first car - the list is endless. What is magical is watching their delight, having accumulated their own money to purchase something for themselves or for others, the sense of achievement and of reaching the goal they had
saved hard towards over weeks, months or even years. Once this habit of saving is formed it stays with them for life - saving for bigger things maybe but saving just the same. The Furness Building Society in Brampton is Local – it is a truly independent and mutual building society and mutuality is simply about putting our members first. We also support the local community through the Furness Community Awards Scheme. We have been around for over 150 years and we celebrate this by helping 150 local charities, community groups and good causes every year to make a real difference to local people. So whether you need a new kit, want to give your youth club or nursery a lick of paint or simply need help with a fundraising event we could help. Why not pop into our office in Brampton where you will receive a warm welcome from Ian, Christine and Nicola and make your application today.

TRAVEL GUIDE
T R AV E L
TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK SHARES TRAVEL IDEAS FOR THE COMING MONTHS
H
ow was your summer? Is it fading into a distant memory? Schools are back and it’s now the time of year when those of us not limited to the school holidays can think about taking a break. There are still some great deals to be had if you haven’t yet booked, but now’s a good time to be thinking ahead to future holidays as well. September and October are wonderful months for travel in Europe. It’s less crowded, the temperatures are slightly cooler but there’s still some great sunny weather to be had, the sea is still warm and in most places prices start to fall slightly. If you want to be more active, then mountainous regions such as the Alps and the Pyrenees are great for walking and cycling holidays in September and early October. If you’re looking to travel further afield, the southern hemisphere is just emerging from the cooler winter months and the monsoons are starting to diminish in certain parts of Asia. It’s also a lovely time of year to explore some of our own country. Here’s a look at where you could go over the next couple of months (not exclusively limited to these months): September Most of the Mediterranean is lovely this month. Greece and its islands, Algarve, Italy, Austria, Spain, Croatia. Switzerland, Turkey (prices have been really reasonable here this year, it’s becoming more popular again), Scilly Isles, Scotland, USA, China, Morocco, Maldives (you may get some bargains here in September as the rainy season comes to an end), Mauritius, South Africa (and other countries in Southern Africa), where animals are more readily spotted around watering holes
Japan
“Japan is one of the most culturally interesting destinations I’ve had the pleasure of visiting” and there’s virtually no rain as they head towards the end of the dry season. October Southern and central Europe still offer some pleasant warm days, but evenings start to cool down. If you’re after some sun, but mixed with culture, South East Asia is now starting to come into the dry season, so Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia are all fabulous destinations with great food and offer very good value. Japan is less humid in October, and is one of the most culturally interesting destinations I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. Head across the Atlantic to the USA and the northern States will start to display their hues of orange, yellow and reds as the ‘fall’ foliage takes place. If you’ve got yearnings to go ‘down under’ to Australia or New Zealand, taking a road trip in a campervan is one of the best ways of seeing these locations. If you don’t fancy flying so far, Dubai, Oman and Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE are still
People like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust
warm, and are reached within 7 hours. Even closer are the Canary Islands, perfect for October halfterm. Cape Verde is also a great sun destination for this time of year, with its location off the coast of North West Africa with temperatures around 27-28˚c. If your preference is for cooler climates then why not think ahead to a winter sports holiday? Snow starts falling in the northern hemisphere resorts of Europe and North America early December. If skiing, snowboarding, winter walking or snowshoeing is your passion, there are plenty of destinations to choose from, with a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets. There are two other magical things not to miss over the upcoming cooler months in the northern hemisphere, Santa’s Lapland for any little people, and the Aurora Borealis, or the mystical Northern Lights. These can be best viewed between September and March in Canada, Iceland, and the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland. If you want any information about any of these destinations or holiday ideas, please get in touch with me. Look out for my next article which will all be about cruising.

EMMA BUCHANAN, FROM LINSTOCK, ENCOURAGES LOCAL VILLAGERS TO HELP CARE FOR HEDGEHOGS
B
ritain’s hedgehogs are in trouble. When it comes to environmental issues, it’s easy to think of global problems and large-scale actions. However, what’s going on in your own immediate area is just as important, and easier to affect. What could be closer to the heart of village life than looking out for Britain’s wildlife? You may not be aware, but the hedgehog, a quintessential symbol of the British countryside, is in serious trouble. The rate their numbers are declining threatens to leave them extinct on the UK mainland by 2025. That’s in only 6 years – an incredible prospect. Hedgehogs aren’t just friendly and cute - they are useful: they spend the night travelling through our gardens eating some of the pests that cause us trouble, such as slugs. One of the key reasons for the decline in their numbers is that gardens today are too enclosed for them to pass through. Faced with solid wall or fence all the way around, they can’t get in and are unable to find adequate food, shelter or water. Worse, occasionally they find a way in and get trapped. Luckily, it’s very easy to alleviate this issue and help their numbers recover. It’s crucial that you check whether hedgehogs can access your garden. Help them to get around by adding your home to the ‘hedgehog highway’, promoted by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. All you need to do is make sure there is at least one hole in your fence or wall (or gap in your hedge) at least 13x13cm. Once you do, entice them into your garden by leaving a supply of fresh water nearby, and maybe a scattering of suitable food. Hedgehogs are easily injured since they sleep in piles of wood and leaves. Be careful when strimming or having a bonfire, and if you ever see a hedgehog that looks in distress, injured or not ‘round’ please contact Knoxwood or your local vets. Village life will be all the better for it!

pruning Techniques LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AND TIPS ON CARING FOR TREES AND SHRUBS
M
any trees and shrubs have very attractive bark. In the depths of winter, plants and trees with strikingly coloured bark come into their own with colours such as bright whites, yellows, pinks, warm red-browns light up an otherwise gloomy garden. Winter interest provided by bark on trees and shrubs is an important aspect of planting up a garden, and is sometimes overlooked in favour of more colourful flower interest. A few of the brightest and best are Cornus (Dogwood), Rubus and Salix (Willow). These need pruning each year, almost to ground level in March, to make sure that a fresh crop of the brightest-coloured stems are produced for the next winter. This pruning technique is known as coppicing, and is very easy – simply cut back all stems to within 5-7.5cm (2-2½in) from the ground, or to the previous year’s stubs. Sometimes when a large tree is coppiced suddenly, it can take two seasons to come back into growth, so don’t worry if it seems to take a while to shoot.
Coppicing is very easy – simply cut back all stems to 2-2½in from the ground Pollarding is another method of pruning that keeps trees and shrubs smaller than they would naturally grow. This pruning technique is suitable for Willow, Eucalyptus and other species grown as small trees, and is another way of ensuring the brightest stem colour on new growth. It is normally started once a tree or shrub reaches a certain

height, and annual pollarding will restrict the plant to that height. Pollarding is used for many reasons, including stopping trees and shrubs outgrowing their allotted space, reducing the shade cast by a tree and often on street trees it’s used to stop electric wires and streetlights being obstructed. Pollarding a tree is usually done annually, and would need to be carried out every few years to avoid potential problems. Once young trees or shrubs have reached the desired height, you can begin to pollard them. This involves choosing a framework which for a shrub, this might be one stem cut to a metre high – a mass of stems will grow from the top. With a tree, it is more typical to leave a trunk supporting three or five branches – these branches are cut back to a desirable length and the twiggy growth appears at these ends. Initially, the new branches are held weakly in place as they grow rapidly from underneath the bark, rather than from within the tree. As the wood lays down annual growth rings, the union strengthens, often forming a thickened base where the shoot meets the trunk. Over a number of years, a swollen ‘pollard head’ forms where new shoots grow each year. Trees with weaker wood prone to producing multiple shoots, such as Poplar and Willow can become hazardous. Some of the weakly-attached branches can break off and fall to the ground. Ideally, try to return to a frequent cutting cycle and give us a call to carry out a safety check regularly.

Arnhem 1944 THE HUMAN TRAGEDY OF THE BRIDGE TOO FAR AUTHOR: DILIP SARKAR MBE Publisher: Pen & Sword Books www.pen-and-sword.co.uk • An analysis of fatalities in the battle for the bridge at Arnhem • Detailed biographical sketches of men killed from units involved • Includes Polish and RAF casualties, detailing the part played by these forces during Operation Market-Garden • Unique interviews with families of the deceased • Includes details of German casualties The airborne battle for the bridges across the Rhine at Arnhem ranks amongst the Second World War’s most famous actions – inspiring innumerable books and the star-studded 1977 movie. This book, however, is unique: deeply moved, the author provides a fresh narrative and approach – concentrating on the tragic stories of individual casualties. This raw, personal, side of war, the hopes and fears of ordinary men thrust into extraordinary circumstances, is both deeply moving and revealing: no longer are these just names carved on headstones or memorials in a distant land. Through this thorough investigative work, supported by those who remember them, the casualties live again, their silent voices heard through friends, relatives, comrades and unpublished letters. So, let us return to the fateful autumn of 1944, and meet those fighting in the skies, on the landing grounds, in the streets and woods of Oosterbeek, and on the ‘bridge too far’ at Arnhem. hether you are looking at downsizing, clearing a room or a full house, your unwanted items will be able to help make a difference at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice. Over the coming weeks, the local charity will launch their professional house clearance service which will make donating good quality items to the hospice even easier, whilst you help to support a local charity. Anne Hall, Retail Manager, said “We are delighted to be able to offer this brilliant house clearance service to the local community. From items of furniture to clothing, our house clearance team will be able to remove items from any property
size. The items removed will be taken directly to the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw shops in Carlisle, Penrith, Brampton and Wigton or listed online through our eBay page. The money raised through the sale of the items will help the care, support and activities provided to local people with life limiting illnesses.” An assessment of the clearance will be made and any items that we are unable to sell will be recycled or disposed of for an agreed fee by the customer. To find out more about the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw house clearance service please contact the Hospice Furniture Shop on 01228 549473, pop into the shop on Madford Retail Park, Carlisle, or visit: www.edenvalleyhospice.org

ellvellyn, the third highest mountain in the Lake District, is a mountain of two halves. Look at it from the Western side, from Thirlmere, and there is a bland mountain wall facing you, with only the spike of the Lower Man at 3033 feet to quicken the interest. This is half a mile away from the parent fell with a pretty good view out to the North West. By contrast, ascend from the East, via Striding Edge, and you have one of the best mountain days available. On a perfect summer day, I drove down the side of Ullswater, looking picture - perfect in the morning light. The hawthorns, the gorse, the bluebells, all in full bloom; a day that made you glad to be alive and living so close to this utopia. If I can find somewhere to park for nothing, I will. I tried parking by Patterdale church, but it’s for a maximum of two hours. I ended up parking - well I’d better not say, but it was for free. A lady watched me manoeuvre my tiny car into a microscopic space and said “well done!” I thought she was going to say “you can’t park there!” Oh my goodness, look at Grisedale. I struggle to describe it. Ahead, the mountain wall of Dollywagon Pike, Nethermost
“Ascend from the East, via Striding Edge, and you have one of the best mountain days available” Pike and a chunk of Helvellyn is rearing up. Peaks, scree runs, craggy outcrops. The valley floor falls away as I ascend the flank of Birkhouse Moor. Lots of people, couples and groups are out. I meet a lovely pair from Southampton who agree to doing a piece to my video camera, rather too well for my liking. It’s surprising how, if you put people on the spot, they will often turn up trumps. “What do we talk about?” is
Excellent value for money with high exposure
an inevitable question. “Just say where you are from, where you are headed” I respond. The young man said the experience of talking on camera certainly got his adrenalin going! The wind was picking up, to say the least. I eventually made the hole in the wall, a wooden stile which leads the way to Striding Edge, with the giant face of Helvellyn looming ahead. Red Tarn, an oval of blue, is down to the right. Swirral Edge and Catstycam sit opposite. Striding Edge, in terms of hairiness and exposure, is not as alarming as the spiky Sharp Edge on Blencathra, not as dizzying as Jack’s Rake on Pavey Ark, but there is still plenty to hold your attention. The wind buffeted me, knocking me off balance between steps. Midway along, the Dixon memorial marks the spot at which a foxhunter by that name met his maker. At the end of the edge, a rock chimney drops you down to the saddle, thereafter commences a lung - bursting climb up the final slope to the summit. I felt as sick as a dog during this, too much exertion and fizzy drink. At the top, I sat by the Gough memorial, which commemorates a dog that stood guard by the body of its dead master for three months, back in 1803. The wind was roaring and icy as I ate my sandwiches. I was moving for nobody! If they wanted to read the inscription, too bad. A foretaste of winter then, in the merry month of May. I descended the steep - and crowded - Swirral Edge to the wind - whipped tan below and walked the long track down to the lead mine. I met the young couple again, but didn’t pester them for another “interview”. 25

We thrive on personal recommendations and repeat business due to our commitment to go the extra mile for both our clients and potential buyers alike. Our Testimonial page says it all. If you wish to deal with a Company that have the time, patience, integrity and honesty to service your sale or property requirements then you have come to the right place. Unlike many companies operating in estate agency, BPK’s experienced valuers and sales team are not affected by the pressures of weekly targets, so when they visit a property they are focussed on providing an honest and realistic market appraisal. We do not ‘bid’ for a property and price it too high, nor do we look to undersell for a quick turnover. Our aim is always to achieve the best possible price for our clients and we pride ourselves on being strong experienced negotiators with an emphasis on looking to target the right buyers for the right properties. We also specialise in helping our clients finding their dream home which obviously is a very important part of the process. You can’t move home if you have nowhere to go!!
