ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

A

ccording to recent news, June 21st was the hottest day ... for 41 years.... since records began in 1976! A temperature of 34.5˚c (94˚f) was recorded at Heathrow Airport. This must have come as quite a shock to the passengers landing on British soil - surely its only when we step off a plane abroad that we are greeted by a wall of heat. Still, it gives us something to talk about as we wait for our suitcases to appear at the carousel - “I just can’t believe how sunny it is! Can you believe how warm it is? It was cold this time last week!” In fact, you don’t have to venture far when its hot before you hear “Oh, it’s too hot for me”, “I can’t stop sneezing”, “I can’t wait for winter, I’m more of a winter person”. So what is a heatwave? According to the Met Office a heatwave is an extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of the area at that time of year. They can occur in the UK due to the location of the jet stream, which is usually to the north of the UK in the summer. This can allow high pressure to develop over the UK resulting in persistent dry and settled weather. Inevitably though, the whole country will grind to a halt - there’ll be delays on the railways as the tracks have buckled, roads will melt and the British population will have downed tools and

rushed to Asda to buy as much bread and meat as possible for a spontaneous BBQ (only it’ll take you so long to get the grill hot enough to cook with that the heavens have opened, and you’ll end up eating your burgers on the sofa anyway). What will the weather bring for July and August? Well it’s the school holidays so that can only mean one thing..... Last issue was a busy issue for competitions, so congratulations to the winners of the fabulous Jess Glynne concert tickets, also Jake who rescued Bear from Hayton, and Abbie who won our Where’s Winston Competition, thanks to all who sent in entries! isitors to the Tullie House function room today may wonder about the five murals adorning the walls. In 1931 a series of ten murals were prepared by students of the ‘School of Art’, based in Tullie House, for the Reference library. These are currently not on display. However in March 1955 selected students of the re-named ‘College of Art’ were asked to execute large panels to replace the existing murals which had been there since 1932. The murals were to “depict the life of the community in and around Carlisle as it is today.” The first replacement panel was by William Cowper of “agricultural interests surrounding the city”. Another seven panels followed between 1955 and 1961. The topics were:Cumbrian Farmyard (1955) by William Simpson Cowper Carlisle Brewery (1956) by Max Shepherd Stead McAlpin & Company Ltd. (1957) by Joan Weightman Cumbrian Landscape (1957) by Donald Wilkinson Carlisle Covered Market (1961) by Margaret Harrison

Carlisle Station (1961) by Raymond Higgs Carlisle Market Place (1961) by Michael Mohamed. Workington Steelworks (1961) by Conrad Atkinson. Five of these eight murals are still on display in the Function Room, formerly the Reference Library. They are evidence of the quality of work carried out by art students at Tullie House around the time they moved out of Tullie House to the new ‘College of Art’ on Brampton Road. Much more about the history of Tullie House and the institutions housed there can be found in the book: ‘Carlisle’s First Learning Centre: Tullie House’, available from Tullie House, Bookends and online from P3 Publications and Amazon.

Rooted local arborist Andrew Edgar, from orchard tree surgery and landscape services, shares his experience to help save our trees

L

ove them or hate them, here in Cumbria trees are everywhere, from the most modern urban estates to the oldest country house. Living with them can be hard at times. They can block out the rise of the morning sun, give us the unending task of clearing up after them all autumn and we lie awake on long stormy nights waiting for yet another branch to crash through your greenhouse. But let’s remember what we love about them. The amazing varying shades of colour, the way in which they purify our air, the homes they provide for our wildlife and not forgetting the natural shields they form for our houses to keep out unwanted interest. As an Arborist (a tree surgeon to you and I) I’m regularly asked to remove a particular tree which is causing a problem. Many don’t necessarily want to ‘remove the tree’ but don’t feel they have much of a choice for instance, it may be blocking sun light, growing too close to bedroom windows or simply causing a headache (or more likely back ache) from picking up the mess it leaves (see what I

did there). I try to explain there are ways in which we can manage our trees and perform maintenance on them to reduce all of the problems associated with having a tree in your garden or grounds. On carrying out the maintenance work we find people are left feeling happy that the tree is still a feature of their garden but at the same time they have overcome a problem it has been creating. Shown to the right are pictures and terminology used for some of the regular tasks we perform. Have a look at the trees around you and see whether they could benefit from our services. What do you think? Hopefully you can see a way in which we can help you. Whether you are a homeowner, commercial organisation, Local Authority or agricultural business, we are able to assist you with your arboricultural needs. We are fully NPTC qualified in all aspects of Arboriculture and have 5million pounds of public indemnity cover.

Crown thinning is the removal of a percentage of the branch structure without changing the outline of the tree. Crown thins are usually conducted to allow more light to pass through tree but may also be conducted to reduce the sail area of vulnerable trees or to reduce water uptake. Heavier limbs may also be removed during this operation providing the form of the tree is not damaged or the tree is left in an unbalanced shape. It is also an opportunity to remove dead, dying, diseased, rubbing or crossing limbs.

Crown Lift

Crown lifting

Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches of the tree to give a uniform height above ground level. This practice reveals a clear stem which is often more pleasing to the eye. Common reasons for crown lifting are to bring more light under the tree and to give access to vehicles and pedestrians. Clearance for vehicles is 5.2 metres (17 feet), and for pedestrians 2.5m (8 feet).

Crown reduction is used to reduce the height and/or the spread of the crown of the tree. This is generally conducted for aesthetic reasons but may be carried out to remove dead wood, “stag horns”, at the crown thin top of a mature tree.

irst Aid skills here in the UK are much lower than other European countries. But thankfully we see that people are becoming more aware of how important it is to learn First Aid. Our aim is to educate as many people possible to have the confidence to deal with an emergency. Our basic 4 hour courses cover all the essential lifesaving skills for either Adult or Baby and Child. The courses are fun and interactive so not only do you come away with the knowledge but also the practical skills.

CHOKING One of the most important skills you can learn as a family member is what to do if someone is choking. Choking can be caused by any object (sweets, grapes, small toys, food ect) that is accidentally ‘breathed in’ causing a blockage in the airway. It can be an alarming life threatening situation but by learning these steps and keeping calm you can be successful!

Here are the simple first aid steps for a choking child (older thaN 1) or adult; 1. ASK, “Are you choking?” 2. ASK, “Can you cough?” 3. SHOUT for help 4. 5 BACK BLOWS Give up to 5 sharp blows with the heel of your hand between their shoulder blades in an upward movement. 5. 5 ABDOMINAL THRUSTS Stand behind the casualty, with your arms around them make a fist just above their belly button. With your other hand hold your fist and guide it in a quick J movement, in and up toward the ribcage. Creating an artificial cough. 6. Repeat steps 4&5 until the object has been removed. Call 999 if the method is ineffective. Anyone who has been given abdominal thrusts should go to A&E. Gain this practical skill and much more on one of our Baby and Child First Aid Courses or Basic Adult First Aid courses. Private group bookings are also available so bring the whole family along! All other certificated courses are available for local business and schools. Look online at our full course listing and prices.

B

uilt at Doncaster works in 1923 the Nigel Gresley designed then-A1 class Pacific (4-6-2) first entered service as No 1472. The new locomotive did not receive a name until it was sent for display at a Wembley exhibition in 1924, and then the name Flying Scotsman was chosen. The Legend was born. In 1928 the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) express steam locomotive hauled the first non-stop service from London to Edinburgh and in 1934 went on to break through the 100mph barrier. In addition to regularly hauling express trains for the LNER and later British Railways (BR), the Gresley steam icon has also travelled to, and worked passenger trains in, North America and Australia. Withdrawn by BR in January 1963 as BR No 60103, the locomotive was bought for preservation and soon became a regular sight on mainline specials and at preserved railways. The locomotives history in preservation is an interesting if not chequered one, however stability is now assured as Flying Scotsman has rightly become a part of the national collection administered by the National Railway Museum (NRM). The excitement which surrounded the return to steam of Flying Scotsman in 2016, and the ongoing celebrity status afforded to the famous Gresley designed engine, are perchance

confirmation of the fact that it is The World’s Most Famous Steam Locomotive. The most famous phrase entered into locomotive preservation folklore when first broadcast by John Noakes, a BBC TV Blue Peter presenter. This keepsake publication simply uses carefully selected images, dating from the BR steam era to the present day, to celebrate the Return of the Legend. ravellers to Poland will be captivated and moved by its remarkable history of heroic resilience and tragedy, and delight in the charming character of its cities and in the natural beauty of the countryside. The capital of Poland, Warsaw, was one of the most beautiful cities in central Europe until it was almost totally destroyed during the Nazi occupation of World War II. Most of the city was reduced to rubble and ruin by the end of the war and a large percentage of the population killed or interred in Nazi concentration camps. The historic old town of Warsaw has been painstakingly rebuilt to its 17th and 18th century grandeur. The charming old market square is now a major, UNESCO listed attraction. Even if you haven’t visited Poland, you have probably heard of Krakow the only major city to escape the destruction of World War II. Krakow has one of the best preserved medieval city centres in all of Europe with magnificent churches and palaces lining the old streets. Overlooking the city is Wavell Hill, topped by the striking Royal Castle and Cathedral. Also important is the city’s Jewish roots, and the history of

one of the great Jewish centres in Europe can clearly be seen in the old ghetto area of Kazzimierz, and remembered in the memorial death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau, just west of Krakow. At the very heart of Krakow lies one of the grandest squares in Europe, the Old Market Square. The Old Town is a fairly compact area surrounded by beautiful parkland. The main entrance to the old city is through the Florian Gate, one of the best known Polish Gothic Towers and now home to many a budding artist. Krakow also boasts the oldest university in Europe. The large student population creates a lively atmosphere and a vibrant nightlife. Numerous cafes and outdoor restaurants surround the cobbled main square and the unique atmosphere of this medieval city has made it one of Poland’s most popular tourist destinations. Buses and trams are the cheapest way to get around and tickets are valid for all modes of transport

but must be bought in advance. Taxis are in abundance but it’s best to agree on a price before getting in. However, the historic old town is best explored on foot. The city also provides rental bikes if you’re feeling energetic! Both Warsaw and Krakow have a long tourist seasons and is lovely to visit anytime between April and October. The peak tourist season is summer, especially July and August when it can also be unpleasantly crowded. If you don’t mind the cold and snow you will find that both cities are a great winter destination. If you like Prague and Budapest......trust me when I say you will love Krakow.

ak Tree Animals’ Charity has joined forces with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in a bid to show the people of Carlisle and surrounding areas, the softer side of Staffordshire Bull Terriers, as the rescue centre sees many unwanted Staffies surrendered to the charity. Oak Tree Animals’ Charity campaign - Staffies. They’re Softer Than You Think - aims to raise awareness of the plight of the Staffie, challenge negative perceptions about the breed and show the true soft character of these loveable dogs, that were once known as ‘Nanny dogs’ for their affinity with children. OLD ‘UNS ARE THE BEST

A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named ‘Amal.’ The other goes to a family in Spain, they name him Juan’. Years later; Juan sends a picture of himself to his mum. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds, “But they are twins. Fellwalking enthusiast Stephen Robson reflects on a labour of love which took forty years to achieve – completing all 214 Wainwright Fells.

et’s talk a little about the man that set me off with this obsessive little hobby. I first came across the Wainwright guidebooks as a young boy at my father’s warehouse. They stood out to me in a number of ways. They covered a local, beautiful area, they were hand written and hand drawn, they contained humour and philosophy and they really inspired me to get out there and drink it all in. I think they cost two shillings and sixpence at the time. And they fitted in your pocket! My brother got married in 1977 and I, as his best man, was rewarded with the seven pictorial guides covering all of the Lake District. I had just started driving and I went from fell to fell, ticking them off but more importantly appreciating the way everything was laid out- all the groupings, the distinctive shapes, the lakes that ran alongside, the tarns that suddenly came into view as you climbed, the scary notorious places that tested your mettle....I was in my element! It’s hard to explain the appeal to someone who hasn’t been there and done it, and I appreciate that a lung- bursting, heart- pounding, sweat provoking toil up a mountain isn’t everyone’s idea of fun, but after parking your backside on a heap of stones, allowing the breathing to return to normal, mopping one’s brow with a handkerchief, a person can then sit back and –wow!- admire the new perspectives that height brings to this wonderful scene. Or it could be raining...in which case remain optimistic, hope for the clouds to part, pray for the curtains of mist to be drawn aside, and for a new vista to burst upon the eye. This doesn’t always happen. Sometimes it just pours and pours. Whenever I am up there on a beautiful,

calm, sunny day, I invariably think to myself; old Wainwright would have loved this. But I wonder, what was he really like? The broadcaster Eric Robson, who filmed a handful of programmes with him toward the end of A.W.’s life, maintained that he only opened his mouth to speak when he had something worth hearing. Wainwright’s second wife Betty asked if she might accompany him on a walk. He agreed, on one condition; that she didn’t utter a word!!! A certain amount of people would consider him to have been cantankerous, irascible, testy, surly, sulky, sullen...(with grateful thanks to my thesaurus, there!) but I would have thought that in a one to one setting, twinned in spirit in appreciation of the marvellous landscape on view, he would have been agreeable company. But only for so long! A bit like an exchange with her Majesty the Queen - keep the conversation short! As he often stated, he preferred the company of animals to people, paradoxically he was something of a romantic. You only have to read his words to appreciate this softer and yet passionate side to the man. During his unhappy first marriage he was in search of his ideal woman, albeit mostly in his own mind. He seemed to end up with her, second time around. Time passed, his eyesight failing him was a major blow-his books had been written for his old age when he could no longer make it onto the heights- now Betty would have to read his words to him whilst he sat, eyes closed, with all the images in his head. His last journey was up Haystacks above Buttermere, with a small group of friends, to be tipped out of a little box by Innominate tarn. It was his favourite place, the finest summit. www.village-link.co.uk

off the wall

Stop for a light lunch, try great coffee, homemade cakes, scones or soup in our Coffee Shop while checking out artwork by local artists or using our free WiFi.

Situated in the heart of the historic market town of Brampton, Off The Wall is a unique family run business with a difference

eing food conscious has been important to us from when we first opened Off The Wall coffee shop in 2009. We’re a family run business, with everyone bringing their own talents and skills together to create; good food and a place that we believe in. In 2015 we expanded to include The Patisserie, just next door to Off The Wall. The Patisserie stocks artisan breads, our made here cakes and French organic wine. We’ve also been thrilled to be stocking English Lakes Ice cream this year too! We’re very eclectic in our style of food, sourcing traditional recipes and new ideas to give everything we create it’s own flare. Our meals are freshly prepared to order using local providers, free range, organic and fair trade when ever possible. We like to get to know the people who come through our door and hope that we can provide something for everyone. There is nothing nicer than seeing someone smile when we can make them a meal to suit their needs. Whether that is wheat, gluten and dairy free or just providing a smaller portion of something. We feel it is this that was an important factor in being put forward for and receiving a ‘Local Healthy Option Gold Award’ which has been a fantastic resource and way of showcasing what we do at Off The Wall. We have a lovely range of lunches available; our homemade soup is perfect for a wintry day or if you’re looking for something with hints of summer I can definitely recommend our homemade Hummus served

with whole food and mixed salad or perhaps a filled jacket potato or a Brampton Cobblestone pie to keep you going through the day? We freshly prepare sandwiches, toasties and paninis, a popular filling being a Multi grain Panini filled Creamy French Petit Brie and Caramelised Red Onion Chutney, all served with fresh cut salads. Our coffee is made from Arabica

beans, it has a wonderfully mellow, rounded taste which goes wonderfully with any of our tempting cakes, all of which are made on site. The Cherry Bakewell is one of the most popular, having received many fantastic reviews on Trip Advisor! There are so many tasty treats to be found in Off The Wall from traditional Victoria Sponge to Jam Jar Chocolate Cheesecakes! Our Off The Wall journey has been a rich and adventurous one. We’ve had many amazing experiences through the years. Having BBC Radio Cumbria host a live show for Jigsaw Hospice from our coffee shop, while we were all dressed as Pirates was an event I never would have imagined happening. However it is also the small moments that we are proud of; seeing families grow up, having young people return from University to tell us of their experiences, talking to walkers and cyclists on adventures along Hadrian wall. Each day is full of rewarding experiences. We have been described often as a community hub, a place where friends, families and strangers meet.

Our Sandwiches, Paninis & Toasties are freshly prepared to order. We have a selection of lunch options available, including; vegetarian and whole food, which are also produced on site.

am partial to a nibble. In fact, I am very much a nibbler. I will have a nibble immediately following a time trial – a nibble with lunch – a nibble in the afternoon and another before bed. In fact, when I stop and think, I have even been known to have a nibble at breakfast. My nibble of choice? Cheese. Yes, glorious, loveable cheese. In every scrumptious variety. Crumbly, hard, strong and soft. The lot.

Cheese contains tryptophan, which is needed to produce melatonin, the brain chemical that helps us to become drowsy Good old cheddar is my choice following a time trial for its high protein content to aid recovery. Lunch is hard; afternoon blue. Bedtime; cottage cheese. Wonderful cottage cheese - always plain and full fat. A cheese I never tire of. It contains tryptophan, which is needed to produce melatonin, the brain chemical that helps us to become drowsy - which goes a long way to explain why I drift off so quickly - and if that isn’t enough to have you reaching for that extra large pot, then I can tell you that it also strengthens your teeth with it’s casein and calcium phosphate. Who knew? Well, you do now. Finishing a meal with cheese is now an order. Strong cheese stimulates salivary flow and that (prepare to be surprised) cleans our teeth. It really does. You must never again pass on the cheese plate. Humph, you may be thinking, but what about all that fat? Increasing your dairy by eating more cheese, yogurt and milk will make you lean. Protein satisfies. It reduces blood pressure too. Trans-palmitoleic is a fatty acid that is found in dairy products. Healthy people have it in their blood. Still don’t believe me? Then grab yourself a copy of last months Journal of Epidemiology, it is all in there and while you are jumping around with joy – admit it you love cheese - your bones will be fine. They stay strong when you eat cheese so you can bounce as high as you like without breakages. Say cheese.
