ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS
Welcome
T
he other day, I read that three-quarters of Brits plan to holiday in the UK this year. The article said “There’s a real feeling of nostalgia when you holiday in the UK as most of us have memories of playing eye-spy en-route, eating fish and chips on the seafront and enjoying quality time together”. My childhood memories are somewhat different to that. There was seven of us in our family, so our only viable holiday option was packing up our Citroen CX Familiale 7-seater and heading to far off resorts, like Hoddam Castle in Ecclefechan and if dad was feeling flush, Port Patrick near Stranraer. If the sun ever shone during these holidays, we were all almost tearful with gratitude. Dad was convinced that despite vile weather, traffic hold-ups, arguments, car sickness and breaking down – these camping holidays brought us all together. A story I heard recently just summed up many camping experiences of my own. After successfully setting up the tent, and admiring their brand new equipment, the wife gets the BBQ going approx 20 yards from the tent. Her husband decides to put the kettle on, so gets the little blue Camping Gas canister and twists it onto the stove. On doing so, it released a bit of air, which made him jump, which made him drop the canister, which rolled towards his wife, hitting the BBQ,

which burst into flames. The wife’s hair was burnt, the dog had a brown stripe down her back and the tent was on fire. The Husband stamped out the fire, with his bare feet. While the family frantically ran around to put the fire out, the camp site manager comes running over, helpfully shouting “DONT BURN THE GRASS!!!” Needless to say, they never went camping again. Still, it’s a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, and we certainly can give any landscape in the world a run for its money, if on a cosier, more domestic scale. Plus nobody else can do fish and chips or a decent cup of tea. Congratulations to Jane Cook, who won the Crossword competition, enjoy your Gold Pamper Day at the Crown Hotel, Wetheral and well done to Alice and Hannah, who found Bear!!

PEARL OF WISDOM Elderflowers have traditionally been used as a mild astringent and are used in skin washes to refine the complexion and help relieve eczema, acne and psoriasis. Both the flowers and berries in the Elder plant can be used when properly prepared, but all leaves, sticks, and roots should be avoided. Elder is somewhat similar in appearance to several other toxic plants found in Britain, so you need to be absolutely sure it is elder you’ve found before harvesting.

absolutely love a bargain and have to admit that I can’t walk passed a second hand shop without taking a quick peak. Fortunately, gone are the days when it is embarrassing to frequent one. My daughter used to be mortified if I went into a second hand shop and would stand well away until I came out, how things have changed. However, is it just me or are they getting really expensive, no longer can you can pick up a dress for a couple of pound. importance of the money raised by charity shops, but many people who frequent these shops are probably feeling the pinch and are looking for a bargain but these are getting harder to find. High Street labels are prominently displayed and prices marked even higher, and what is even more frustrating is that if they label it ‘vintage’ then the price quadruples. At the end of the day charity shops make money from things people don’t want which are donated and hopefully

FLOWER giving others a chance to grab a bargain. I am not sure how this will end, we will have to wait and see where the future of charity shops takes us. I love this time of year when everything is coming back to life, including myself!! Last year I did a recipe for elderflower cordial, but as I am such a fan of this I am going to give you another recipe I found which is even simpler. ‘Elderflower Syrup’. Put 10 or more large elderflower heads in a pot together with two or three halved lemons. Pour 5 litres of boiled water over them. Add 1kg sugar and 50g of critic acid, cover and leave to soak in a warm dry place for 24 hours. After this time pour the liquid through a very fine sieve and pour into sterilised jars, seal and store in a dry place. This obviously can be used as a cordial served best I think with soda water, or why not try it with prosecco for that something special. You could also add it to whipped cream and serve with strawberries, pour it over ice cream or soak some in cake sponge when making a trifle. There a so many things you can do with this syrup, let’s get creative.

hile I was waiting for the test car to be brought to the front door of the dealership, I couldn’t help eavesdropping on a conversation between two technicians. One was putting his viewpoint across on the various options on the “43” while the other gave a glowing review of the new “63”. You’d have a 500 over the 350 anyday of the week, but the 400 is a still a tasty option. It got me thinking (which was strange for a Tuesday). What is it about cars and numbers? One psychology theory states that “all men are actually a bit autistic” which explains why they are so obsessed with numbers. It also clarifies why cars remain one of the few products still labelled entirely by

numbers. Where else, apart from a Chinese takeaway, do you ask for a 75, a 406, or a 911 if you want to be served? There’s also the theory that numbers facilitate comparison, thus pandering to the male obsession with competitiveness. The bigger the number, the better it is! The Tech Bit: The new SLC has an impressive heritage to live up to. Formerly the SLK, the new name change acknowledges the traditionally close relationship with the C-Class, from which much of the roadster’s technology is derived. Among the styling changes brought to the SLC are a new front bumper with larger ducts for improved engine bay cooling, an altered grille featuring a MercedesBenz’s latest diamond-shaped insert

The only other reason I know why you should go out and by this car, is simply ‘chicks dig convertibles’. If you are a girl, you know this is true; if you are not a girl, you will find that driving a convertible will help you to attract and retain them. It’s much harder to argue in a convertible -- the combination of wind noise and exposure make a fight much less likely. Queue here, fellas.

Room 22 in the Keep of Carlisle Castle reveals more of its stories and secrets in even greater detail and depth.
T
he chance discovery of twenty-five previously unknown medieval outline images, carved on the walls in Room 22 in the Keep of Carlisle Castle reveals an elaborate carving process – one entirely unsuspected – which the original illiterate and untrained garrison soldiers and local peasants were thought not to be sufficiently skilled to perform. Equally, the additional images lend even more support to the hypothesis that the earliest carvings were requested by the Castle’s governor, possibly King David I of Scotland, as decorations to the small room in his apartment complex on the second floor of the Keep in the late 1100s. The book also traces the fortunes of the Barons of Gillesland – the Vauxs, the Moultons, the Greystokes and the Dacres – along with the adoption by these families of mythical heraldic animals – ‘supporters’ of their coats of arms, which later became known as ‘The Dacre Beasts’, now on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
A full account of the pictograms, featured on the stone blocks of Room 22, is offered – telling the spellbinding tales of such border heroes as Sir Andrew de Harcla, Sir James Douglas and his ‘Band of Brothers’ and, of course, Baron Thomas Dacre of Flodden Field fame. Also covered in detail are the stories of St. Sebastian and the ‘Black Death’, the ‘Bloody Battle of Towton’ and the Siege of Carlisle in 1460. Carvings in the Great Hall reveal connections between the Bruces and Comyns at the turn of the 13th century as defending governors and attackers of Carlisle’s Royal Border Fortress. Other images hint at possible connections with other Reivers like Kinmont Willie and Hutcheon Graham, as well as the raids across the border by hundreds of Moss Troopers during ‘Ill Week’ in 1603 in the first days of James I’s reign. Truly, Room 22 hints at more of its secrets on this second visit.

HEALTH & WELFARE LPA? by Butterworths Solicitors, Carlisle
A
Health and Welfare LPA enables you to choose a person (or persons) you would wish to make personal decisions on your behalf. It can only be used if you have lost the mental capacity to make such decisions yourself. All the time you have capacity, no one else can make these decisions for you. In making a Health and Welfare LPA, you have the opportunity to nominate someone you trust and who knows your wishes, to make decisions about your health and welfare, however, your Attorney has a duty to make those decisions in your best interests. If you want to ensure that someone has the authority to express
If you don’t have a Health and Welfare LPA decisions could be made without knowledge of your wishes
your wishes as to your continuing medical treatment if you become incapable of doing so yourself, then it is a good idea to make a Health
and Welfare LPA. Your Attorney could make decisions about your daily routine; about your medical care and treatment (including deciding whether to consent to or refuse life-sustaining treatment, such as being resuscitated, if you have given your Attorney this power). Your Attorney can also ensure that the care you receive (whether in your own home, or in a residential care home), meets your wishes and expectations. If you don’t have a Health and Welfare LPA decisions could be made without knowledge of your wishes. We understand that this is a difficult subject to discuss with your family, but doing so ensures that they are aware of your wishes, and prompts discussions as to how you would want those decisions to be taken. It also gives you the reassurance of knowing that – if the worst should happen – that you have chosen someone you trust to make those decisions for you. Here at Butterworths we can guide you through the process of making a Financial and Property LPA and a Health and Welfare LPA. Please contact Megan Wilkinson or Grant Harrison on 01228 593939.

GARDENING
A
Summer flourish and splendour
s bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is fast approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures these next months bring. Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae. The key to successful planting,
whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Beforehand, soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water with a watering can - this will give the plant
a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. For large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so.

Great ingredients and fine cooking leads to fabulous meals
C
arlisle based Fair Meals Direct are offering a quality ‘Meals on Wheels’ service in Carlisle. Scratch below the surface and you find a rather extraordinary story of local produce, quality preparation and dedicated volunteers. Originating during the dark days of the Blitz in World War II, the first Meals on Wheels service was operated by the Women’s Volunteer Service to prepare meals for bombed-out families. Shortly after, the first home delivery services came about utilising old prams for transport and keeping the meals hot with straw bales and even felt hats. As time went by, the sterling work of the WRVS was built on by local councils to provide a Meals on Wheels service to many elderly residents and it was recognised that having a daily visit was literally a life saver for some. Fair Meals Direct, a not-for-profit scheme, stepped into the role of providing meals in April 2014 when Cumbria County Council stopped providing a Meals on Wheels service. As part of Fair
16-70 Seater Coaches Food Carlisle, the meals service uses quality ingredients that are sourced as locally as possible. When it comes to selecting the menu and ingredients, Fair Meals Direct has their own professional cook who is very choosy about finding quality meats and vegetables. This is more akin to traditional home cooking than the mass produced foods found in the chiller cabinets of our supermarkets. Based in modern kitchens at Water Street in Carlisle, the meals are prepared daily by two cooks and transported out by a dedicated team of volunteers. It’s very much in the spirit of how the early services were provided, with good cooking and enthusiastic helpers. Prices for a main meal are £3.70 with an optional £1 extra for a dessert. The meals are available five days a week, Monday to Friday and it is a flexible service with no set minimum orders. The meals service can be used on a temporary basis, or as a supplement to regular arrangements in providing good wholesome hot meals. Visit the Fair Food Carlisle website for more information at: www.fairfoodcarlisle.org To find out more about using the service or volunteering please contact Trish on: 01228 267167.

W
hilst the British weather is up to its old tricks again, the sun continues to shine on Dawson and Sanderson as holiday companies look to tempt you with new and exciting destinations for Summer 2017. With deposits from £19 per person*, you can secure next years holiday before packing your bikini or budgie smugglers for this years holiday! Thomas Cook have added Croatia and Mykonos to their summer programme. The additions will begin running from May next year with the operator re-launching Costa Del Sol in the same month. This is the earliest Thomas Cook have launched a Summer programme for the following year as they look to steal a march on the competition by offering customers some fantastic deals for those choosing to book early. If you fancy something different, Thomson and First Choice are adding two new Caribbean destinations to their Summer 2017 programme. The two UK brands, which are part of Tui UK & Ireland, will introduce St Lucia and Cayo St Maria, an island just off the coast of Cuba, from next May. TUI will use the 787
12
If you’re into star gazing, Anne Hathaway, Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz have all been spotted holidaying around glamorous harbour town Porto Cervo. Dreamliner to fly to the destinations. Thomson customers will also be able to travel to Olbia in Sardinia, staying in two newly-renovated hotels. Olbia, often described as the “Emerald Coast” boasts some of Europe’s most sought-after beaches. With fine golden sand and sparkling see-through waters, they rival those in the Caribbean. Closer to home some of our customers had a fantastic surprise earlier this week when they were told they had been selected to each receive free travel money. Customers who had obtained the Escape Travel Money Card from our Bureau earlier this year had long forgotten that they had been entered into the draw, so they were delighted when we contacted them to ask them to call into the shop and collect their prize. One lady received £300 whilst 10 others
received £100 and 10 more received £50. The cards, backed by MasterCard are free to buy once £100 is loaded onto them, free to use at an ATM when over £100 is withdrawn and free to use at any point of sale. So for the lucky ones it has been a perfect scenario, they got a card for free and now they have money for free as well. When they can go on line they can view their card usage and much more all for free. So as the old Dire Straits song indicated, they have their money for nothing and their checks for free. The Escape Travel Money Card is one of the many foreign exchange products that we supply. It is not a debit card so there is no risk of bank account details being cloned or a PIN number being stolen and the bank account being emptied. It is not a credit card so nobody is running up a debt each time they use it. It does not resemble a Travellers Cheques but it could be described as the modern day equivalent. The Escape Travel Money Card cards is used in the same a debit or credit card is used. It can be used in shops, restaurants etc. to pay for goods and services or when cash is required it can be used at an ATM. Earlier this month we also released a new easy to use secure online holiday payment system (www. pay4myholiday.co.uk) It’s flexible to allow you to pay for your holiday out of office ours and when it’s convenient for you, plus it’s mobile and tablet friendly so it can be used on the go if needed. We are also one of the first travel agents not to charge any card fees on personal visa or mastercard. So there you have it. A little glimpse into the life of your local Independent Travel Agent.

Paul Crooks is the owner of local IT Service business, Cache4 IT Solutions. Having over 25 years experience working with computers, Paul previously ran the IT department at Carlisle Sony Centre, until Sony discountinued computers. Q: How long has your business been running? A: The business has been going for 19 months now. I really enjoy helping homes and businesses with their IT problems. Q: How did your business get off the ground? Like a lot of new, small businesses I started working from home. The spare bedroom was used as an office and the loft was converted into a workshop. With business growing steadily I started to outgrow “the spare room” and began to look for premises. In March I was delighted to move into McKnight House on Junction Street, Carlisle. This location and office size is perfect giving me extra room to manage and service my customers whilst offering easy access and car parking. Q: What kind of jobs are you asked to do? The jobs are diverse; for home customers it is mostly slow computers usually caused by viruses and spyware or internet and Wi-Fi problems. Businesses either use my services on an ad-hoc basis or by the more popular way of managed support. The latter is a more proactive and cost effective way of safe guarding your IT. I offer a free audit and with these findings I can tailor make a support package to suit the business’s needs.

Fellwalking enthusiast Stephen Robson reflects on a labour of love which took forty years to achieve – completing all 214 Wainwright Fells.
akeland adventures, eh? I’ll tell you a couple. I have often wandered as lonely as a proverbial cloud, but there have been several occasions when I have been in perilous situations with other people. Many years ago I was walking with a bloke called Nigel. That wasn’t his real name by the way; I am erring on the side of caution in case he recognises himself when reading this. Nigel had a different perspective on outdoor pursuits to me. He traded in a pair of his old boots to help buy me some new ones. Stiff - soled climbing boots that blistered my heels, I remember. The agreement was I would do all the driving- he had no car- and he would introduce me to snow and ice climbing. And so it came to pass that I found myself at the base of the cliffs of Great End, in the middle of winter, on a crisp sunny day. The gullies above gleamed with frozen waterfalls, Nigel talked of climbing them. Not that day, but certainly once I had mastered ice axe self-arrest skills; we would be good to go. With that in mind he proceeded to hold me in an upside down attitude on a snow covered slope, the ice axe held diagonally across my chest. I had a terrific, inverted view of Great Gable over my right shoulder. I was clad in a cagoule and overtrousers, everything about my apparel was very slippery. He gave me a shove for good measure; I flew down the slope on my back, head first. “Stop yourself with the ice axe!” yelled Nigel. Not a bad idea I thought, as I hurtled towards some outcrops of rock at the base of the slope. I tried to ram the axe into the snow. It bounced straight back out. Onwards I continued, panic stricken as to the outcome of this mad escapade. At the second attempt the ice axe held, nearly Great Gable

wrenching my arms out of their sockets and I lay face down with a mouth full of snow, swinging like a pendulum and breathing heavily. We never did any climbing; this and a frightening experience near sharp edge in a snow storm was more than enough for me! Years later I worked at an outdoor centre in Carlisle and a group of four of us set off to scale Napes needle on the side of Great Gable. There were two experienced climbers and two novices. I was, needless to say, one of the latter. I recall being helmeted, all kinds of clanking metal equipment suspended from my climbing harness, and feeling very nervous. We were standing at the dress circle, the needle above us, a rocky dagger pointing into the sky. The lead climber got to the top of it whilst I watched far below, trying to swallow my sandwich. I felt as though I was going to throw up. The other novice followed him, reaching the top to sit alongside. Now it was my turn. I made my way up the outside edge with a dizzying drop below me and the line of the Scafells directly opposite. My mouth was dry and my legs were shaking. It was like being on a church spire. I feared “freezing” and becoming crag-bound. I chickened out. “Let me down. I can’t do this.” The others didn’t argue. I never tried anything like that again, needless to say. I restored a little of my self esteem by abseiling off Shepherds crag in Borrowdale on the way home. As Clint Eastwood once said “a man has to know his limitations!”

Letter to the editor Dear Village Link You do your bit to support your Local community with news and information that lands on our doorstep. I wanted to make your readers aware that volunteering is another invaluable way of offering time and experience to support people who need it in the local area. Citizens Advice Carlisle and Eden are looking for more volunteers to support the delivery of our much needed service across Carlisle District. We currently have a team of over 40 volunteers who we rely on to provide a wide range of support to local people on issues such as debt, employment matters, housing and benefits. All our volunteers receive rigorous training and on-going support and supervision. We are looking for people who are friendly, approachable, open minded and non-judgemental. You need to have excellent verbal communication skills and be generally organised and competent using a computer. We look for people who can be flexible and are able to work well as part of a team and who have an understanding of some of the issues faced by the people to come to us for support. We ask our volunteers to give us one day a week and provide a long term commitment. Ian, who has been volunteering with us for several years, says “Citizens Advice is such an important organisation that relies heavily on volunteers. The role we are asked to do is stimulating, rewarding and challenging but it’s great to be part of a team and you are given all the support you need. I find it a really good way to keeping my brain active, providing me with some structure AND helping my local community.” If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering with Citizens Advice look at https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ about-us/support-us/volunteering/ or email volunteer.recruitment@ca-ce.org. uk or telephone 03300 563037 . I look forward to hearing from you! Kitty Booth-Clibborn Training Officer

ARE WE TOO
CLEAN?
Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland
T
he interior of my husband’s car is absolutely filthy but, once you have squeezed yourself in, it is strangely comforting. You can bring your coffee cup in, the dog, more dogs and anything else you fancy. Nothing, but nothing, is banned and this provides a very chilled and welcomed experience for the passenger. You may be thinking, but what about all that filth? Well filth, (I may be over-using this word but I rather like it) is good for you. Living in a sterile environment is positively harmful - all those chemicals. You build up zilch immunity against pesky bugs when your surroundings are too clean. Instead, it is better to live life on the edge and throw caution to the wind; kick back.
Living in a sterile environment is positively harmful! I found myself questioning the thoroughness of a recent car wash. Unlike my husband, I do care although I know some of the more observant of you will question this. The kindly attendant remarked that my expectations were too high. After all, he surmised you ‘live on a farm’. We don’t. On a more successful return visit the car and I arrived home gleaming. For three whole days my car dazzled. I found myself admiring its shiny exterior; such is the power of a bit of elbow grease. I pondered this morning, following my bike ride, whether we should both have a bath - the bike and I that is, although clearly not together. Mildly tempted, I would be able to stay warm and more to the point indoors. Though the temptation was great, I resisted. I only wish I could take a leaf from my husbands philosophy. It really does make for a happier day, or it would until the moment dad should take a look at my bike. Mud and expensive components do not mix. My slovenly happiness would then soon evaporate. So I set to with pairs of old tights (something I care not to wear), which I have found reach into all the awkward corners - maybe cleaning can be fun after all. On the other hand … T: 01768 896733 | M: 07976 266335 Email: carol@pilates-cumbria.co.uk www.pilates-cumbria.uk We are committed to successfully promoting your business or venture

The Inevitable Laws of Work If you are good, you will be assigned all the work. If you are really good, you will get out of it. A pat on the back is only a few centimeters from a kick in the butt. If it wasn’t for the last minute, nothing would get done. When you don’t know what to do, walk fast and look worried. There will always be beer cans rolling on the floor of your car when the boss asks for a ride home from the office. Keep your boss’s boss off your boss’s back.
