ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

mother was recently told by a teacher that her child could not use lip balm at school. She would have to come in at lunch time to apply it. Health and Safety going a bit far? Well everyone loves a list, so here are some of the most bizarre health and safety ‘bans’ currently in operation. A ban was recently put on playing football in the playground – unless the ball is made of sponge. A pensioner recently paid the council to take away her old television - but the 85-year-old woman still had to drag her hefty gogglebox outside for the council staff in case they put their backs out lifting it. There’s a ban on royal wedding street parties – unless the organiser is prepared to shell out for insurance to the value of £5million and ... it’s game, set and match to the organisers of the Wimbledon tennis tournament for preventing crowds from watching Andy Murray’s match on a big screen on ‘Murray Mount’ because the grass was wet and they might slip. One of my favourite comedians once joked: “Have you ever just looked at an ironing board? Can you imagine getting that approved in today’s safety conscious world? “What did you want to get an approval on sir? “Erm, I call it an ironing board. I want to have a surf board shape device about waist high, and I want to support it with two thin crisscrossing poles, so the centre of gravity is precariously high, so the slightest nudge would be sure to topple it. Then I want to put a big hot metal

thing on top of that, with water the temperature of lava oozing out the side and dripping off the board for burn wounds. I want one side to be a white hot heat for scarring and I want the shear weight to be able to cause blunt force trauma, and I want the whole thing to come to a point for puncture wounds. Oh, and I want a cord coming down to get the toddlers involved. We know health-and-safety legislation exists to protect people from real risks at work and it’s absolutely right that employers meet certain standards, but there is also plenty of truth in the notion that health and safety has ‘gone mad’. Congratulations to our competition winners! Our two Crossword winners were Mr Peter Sedgwick and Mrs Kathleen Lynch, each winning Christmas Fayre Lunch at the Crown Hotel Wetheral. Mr Graham Simpson won tickets to see the Reel Rock 10 Tour film at Rheged and little Harry from Wetheral found Bear in the park in Great Corby. Thank all our advertisers, contributors, distributors, and of course you, our loyal reader.

hen travelling southwards down the Carlisle bypass recently you may have noticed an old bridge in the field on your left when approaching the Burgh Road roundabout. The bridge is an original relic of the Carlisle Ship Canal, drained in 1853 before conversion into the Port Carlisle railway. The bridge deck and stone walls of the railway bridge sit on top of the original canal bridge with the canal keeper’s cottage nearby. Why is it there?, you may ask, and the answer is because it is a listed structure. The original curved and dressed stone of the canal bridge can be seen at the bottom, together with the dates- tone 1821 AD. The canal bridge was a wooden cantilever structure operated by the bridge keeper and we know what they looked like by looking at a detail from a Sam Bough painting ‘Baggage Waggons er p Canal Cov approaching Carlisle’, Carlisle Shi which shows the canal bridge in what

is now Engine Lonning Nature Reserve. Guthrie Hutton, author of a book on the Forth and Clyde Canal, sent me a picture of the canal bridge at Bonnybridge which looks very like Sam Bough’s depiction. The bridge has always been in the field, but previously it was surrounded by bushes and trees. I understand the area has been cleared so that it can eventually become a campsite for Hadrian’s Wall walkers with the bridge as an object of historical interest, the cottage being used as a museum/shop.

THE little

BLACK DRESS

JANE COULTHARD, Jiggery Pokery, TELLS US How to avoid the Christmas ‘Party Dress’ meltdown

D

you own a Little Black Dress? No, me neither! As the festive season hurtles towards us at high speed, an office party, gathering with friends, luncheon date or Christmas night out may loom for many of you. Will you will opt for the LBD? What, if like me, the LBD is not an easy one to carry off? As a classic pear shape, an LBD is not an easy option. Balancing a smaller top half to proportionally bigger bottom takes careful consideration and style choice.

An LBD is not always a fail safe hassle free solution to that Christmas party invite!

A classic shift may fit across the bust but not the hip. A strapy little number is not for me - too much flesh is not good. A figure hugging body con draws the eyes to the ‘pear bottom’…..need I go on. An LBD is not always a fail safe hassle free solution to that Christmas party invite. It’s separates for me and many others with my body shape predicament. Tops ‘n’ bottoms balance out my disproportionate figure, helping to create the illusion of a sylph-like figure! Or so I’d like to think.

my check list for a pear shaped boD • Choose an easy wear top in a sheer lux fabric. • Pick simple cut and style. A soft relaxed shape over the hips but not too long. • Look out for subtle interesting detail around the neckline such as covered buttons or tasteful embellishments. Quirky use of fabric eg; delicate pleating or small ruffles. • I naturally seek out soft muted shades, but if I do opt for black, I’ll absolutely make sure I add more depth of colour to my make up routine, a rich colour for lips and a touch more bronzer, as black can be terribly draining especially on my older skin. A natural looking tan enhancer is a must if I’m showing my less than toned bare arms. • As I live in jeans or trousers I’ll be hunting down the perfect pair of smart casual variety. • High waisted. Sleek with a soft sheen for a touch of elegance. Slim fitting. Ideally with a light stretch. Slim legged as this helps to balance out the body top from bottom. Certainly a little stretch if I’m enjoying a meal and drinks with friends. I’ll slip on a pair of heels, grab a clutch, sling on some defining accessories probably a cuff and over sized pair of earrings, leaving out a necklace as this would be over kill. Jump in the taxi and let the party begin!

If you’re seeking an alternative to the LBD then drop by this month at Jiggery Pokery and let us help avoid the Party dress meltdown!

y formative years were back in the ‘70’s when I was in my teens. Those were the days of lava lamps; bean bag chairs; the first microwave ovens and platform shoes! Oh, how I was desperate for a pair of those. Happy Days and Dukes of Hazard were on TV although I drew the line at Daisy Duke’s shorts. Then there was disco fever, John Travolta springs to mind, and of course Abba. However it should be noted that back in the day, it just wasn’t cool to like Abba, hard to believe now I know, but true. You have to remember that the ‘70’s was the

decade of rock stars like the Rolling Stones, laid-back Americans like the Eagles, and British punk bands like The Sex Pistols. Abba on the other hand wrote catchy pop songs, wore ridiculous outfits and smiled too much. If you said you liked Abba in the 70’s you were quite simply uncool and before you ask, yes I was one of them. They have however, stood the test of time and are as popular today (if not more popular) than they were back then. Today, anything from the ‘70’s is now labelled ‘Retro’ which is viewed as cool, how ironic is that.

What about ‘70’s food? Remember Scampi, baked Alaska, vol au vents (Abigail’s Party springs to mind), prawn cocktails, coq au van and chilli con carne. As winter is approaching why not have a ‘Retro’ 70’s party and make a large bowl of chilli (not out of a packet) for your guests. Try the following recipe - Heat your oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 3. Fry 2 sliced large onions for about 8 mins in 2 tablespoons olive oil. Add 3 crushed garlic cloves, 2 tbsp mild chilli powder, 2 tsp ground cumin and 2sp dried oregano and cook for 1 min. Gradually add 1kg mince, stirring well until browned and then stir in 400g tin chopped tomatoes and half a tin of water. Crumble in two beef stock cubes, cover and cook in the oven for 30 mins. After 30 mins stir in 2 red peppers which have been cut into chunks, 10 sundried tomatoes, put back in the oven and cook for a further 30 minutes. Finally add 2 well drained tins of red kidney beans and reheat on the hob until bubbling. (You can make this in advance and re-heat when your guests arrive). Serve with some boiled rice, soured cream and guacamole. For a cheat’s quick and easy pudding why not buy a ‘retro’ 70’s artic roll. Boy, does that take me back! www.village-link.co.uk

MERCEDES GLE

COUPÉ

M

erc has decided to revamp its naming conventions in an effort to make them easier to understand. Your re-education starts here, with the GLE. GLE is the new name for the ML-class (also formerly known as the M-class). What was that about the GLE name being easier to understand I hear you ask? The logic behind the new name is that from now on all Mercedes ‘off-road’ models will start with the letter G. This is actually and officially in homage to the ‘legendary’ G-Wagen, nowadays better known as the G-class. The letter on the end then denotes the particular off-roader’s relationship to the rest of Mercedes range; in the GLE’s case, its closest conventional relative is the E-Class. Make sense?

suspension and steering systems to make for a softer or sportier drive. Not surprisingly for a 4x4, it comes with fourwheel drive as standard, meaning it grips well in corners and it handles twisty roads impressively – well, after all, it does weigh as much as a walrus! The interior is very posh and front and rear seat passengers get decent amounts of head- and legroom. They’ve also found a way to

Motor Review

As for the L, that’s just Mercedes’ preferred ‘linking’ letter, added to make the name more memorable and easier to pronounce. Honestly, that’s the official explanation! Since November is the month when many motorists decide to buy a new or used 4x4, I decided to test drive the mighty Mercedes GLE Coupe 350d. This GLE 350d Coupe gets the well respected 3.0-litre V6 diesel – a definite favourite in Mercedes’ engine line-up - complete with a new nine-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. This model has a ‘sporty’ styling inside and out with changes to the suspension and gear ratios for a sportier drive, and five different driving modes - Individual, Comfort, Slippery, Sport and Sport+ - that make changes to the chassis, engine,

give the car a sporty sloping roofline without making adults in the back feel hideously cramped. Traditionally, the only electrical device slotted into your car’s dashboard was nothing more than a radio and a CD player – maybe a satellite navigation system, if you’d really splashed out. However, nowadays, as systems have become all-encompassing and complex, they have started to provide information to the driver, as well as entertainment. Hence, the term ‘infotainment’ was born. The GLE Coupe has an eight-inch infotainment screen that appears to float in the middle of the dashboard. Being a techno-whizz, there I was happily finger-tapping and swiping this screen. Just as I was about to delcare it was broken, I realised that, although it may look like a touch-screen tablet - it’s not. (Ahh, that’s what the rotating controller between the front two seats is for). Do you think I got away with that? Not a chance!

3d printing? I

NOW THAT 3D PRINTING - THE PROCESS OF MAKING THREE-DIMENSIONAL SOLID OBJECTS FROM DIGITAL DESIGNS - IS AVAILABLE AND AFFORDABLE TO INDIVIDUAL CUSTOMERS, ITS PIQUED A LOT OF INTEREST ACROSS THE TECH SPACE IN THE PA ST FEW YEARS. tech4 OFFICE EQUIPMENT explainS MORE.

nvented by a man named Chuck Hull back in 1986, 3D printing is achieved by laying down successive layers of materials above each other until the entire object is created. From scale models, gifts and clothing to prosthetic limbs, hearing aids and the prospect of 3D-printed homes, the possibilities seem endless. How do 3D Printers work? It all starts with a concept. The first stage of 3D printing is laying out an original idea with digital modeling — that is, with computer aided design (CAD) or animation modeling software. Whichever program you choose, you’re able to create a virtual blueprint of the object you want to print. The program then divides the object into

digital cross-sections so the printer is able to build it layer by layer. The cross-sections essentially act as guides for the printer, so that the object is the exact size and shape you want. Now for the fun part. After the finished design file is sent to the 3D printer, you choose a specific material. This, depending on the printer, can be rubber, plastics, paper, polyurethane-like materials, metals and more. Printer processes vary, but the material is usually sprayed, squeezed or otherwise transferred from the printer onto a platform. Then, a 3D printer makes passes (much like an inkjet printer) over the platform, depositing layer on top of layer of material to create the finished product. This can take several hours or days depending on

the size and complexity of the object. Could 3D printing eventually change the world and even make mass manufacturing obsolete? We’ll have to wait and see? If you’d like further information, call Paul Thorburn on 01228 672186 or email: paul@tech4office.co.uk

HEALTH

NEVER GIVE IN TO

WEAKNESS

I

Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland

n a little over a week I have managed to experience the complete spectrum of feelings. Not having felt the like since November 2003. My legs ached such that I questioned whether I had run a half marathon and not remembered. I had not. Unrelenting, and unable to make it stop I, the self-proclaimed Queen of Stretch, could not shift it. Nothing, but nothing, took it away. I began to wake in the night with a need to do something, anything, to soothe my raw throat. Nothing helped. The penny slowly – by which point I had lost my mojo - began to drop with a quiet tinkle.

My legs ached such that I questioned whether I had run a half marathon and not remembered. But let’s begin at the beginning … My cycling season ended on the second to last weekend of September. Feeling mellow and satisfied with my efforts I did the unmentionable. I relaxed. Yes, relaxed. My defences lowered. I ate a bowl of chips. Albeit very special chips. To give you an idea of how relaxed I felt. Husband remarked, not so many weeks before, that he ‘never caught a bug alive, or otherwise’ was struck down. Naturally he did not complain. Not one bit. Just soldiered on. I paid little attention. Usually I avoid crowds, never touch handles with my bare hands and if I can see that the cashier at the bank (for example) is spluttering etc., I wait my turn for someone else. I hold my breath if near someone coughing/sneezing. I try to live in a bubble. I did not avoid my husband. So I succumbed to something that others were keen to give a name to. Me? I just wanted to call it weakness, as I slumped into a horribly miserable place. Of course, I presented myself to class and croaked. Double standards? As my husband said, ‘every cloud has a silver lining’. I spent two days during this misery unable to speak. He provided pen and paper. I believe I provided entertainment. I am now better. The drawbridge is back up and I will never, I repeat never, be so complacent again. The gloves are back on. S United set to return to Newcastle The summer seasonal United Airlines’ flight between Newcastle and New York will return next summer. The carrier is set to run six flights a week to Newark Liberty airport between 26th May and 6th September, 2016. The service will be operated by a 169 seat Boeing 757200 aircraft with 16 flat bed seats in Business First and 153 in economy, including 45 economy plus seats with added legroom. As well as connecting the region to New York, United’s Newark hub provides access to a huge range of key cities, including Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Orlando in the United States, and Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver in Canada.

Queensland and Qantas are a perfect match! Did you know that the ‘Q’ in Qantas even stands for Queensland? Qantas offers daily A380 flights from London Heathrow to both Sydney and Melbourne, via Dubai. Thanks to Qantas’ partnership with Emirates you can even choose to depart from regional airports across the UK. On arrival, Qantas customers can explore more than 60 destinations across Australia thanks to the Qantas domestic network including Queensland hotspots Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, Whitsundays and Cairns. large continental islands. One of the first decisions visitors have to make when visiting the Great Barrier Reef is how they are going to experience it. There are too many options to list but you may decide to keep it simple or mix it up with a variety of experiences. The reef offers something for everyone and can be experienced from above, on or below the water. Experiences can vary from scuba diving among the amazing coral life and endless schools of fish (yes, including Nemo!) to taking a sea plane and flying over the Whitsundays. Other activities include playing 18 holes on the only golf course on a reef island owned by Hamilton Island, swimming with dwarf minke whales and even sleeping on the Great Barrier Reef. However you decide to interact with the reef, it is sure to be an experience you will never forget. I could go on and on but Andrew will charge me for another page! Want to know more? TAKES OFF

Smallwood Interiors reveal the latest kitchen trends

O

ver the last few years, we have seen a new impetus in home baking. This is largely due to the popularity of TV shows such as “The Great British Bake off” and the multitude of cookery programmes that now saturate our evening viewing. Kitchens have changed over the years, becoming more aspirational. Ovens, with doors that slide underneath when opened are the ultimate for many home bakers. Integrated appliances such as steam ovens, wine coolers or fully automatic bean to cup coffee machines are desired by many. Induction hobs are available with built in technology that would make Nasa proud! Looks have changed too. High gloss is currently trending, as it did back in the sixties and seventies. These days it is more subtle with various shades of Cream, Ivory or light Grey, but the bold colours, for those with a more adventurous side, are still available. The ever popular shaker style kitchen originated from the “The Shakers”, a peaceful religious move-

ment founded in 18th century England. Their craftsmen made furniture had an emphasis on simplicity and functionality. Their styling is still a major part in today’s furniture manufacture with the shaker style being the main design in today’s timber and painted kitchens, with oak and ash being the predominant natural resource. Granite now competes with new man made materials such as Corian & Quartz. Whilst granite gives us the ultimate natural look, it is porous and can harbour germs. Quartz however, is a combination of ground natural stone mixed with resins and pigments, making it non porous. Certain manufacturers even have a microban substance within the composition of the material that kills bacteria. So if you want to impress with the perfect pastry, it is quartz that reigns supreme.

GARDENING

AUTUMN TREES local arborist Andrew Edgar orchard tree surgery and landscape services

S

o, the long hazy days of summer are behind us and we’re all getting ready for those long winter months when daylight is something we look forward to with anticipation. It won’t be long before bright frosty mornings will be upon us, and we’ll all be wrapping up in our scarves and gloves. Nature isn’t any different with this cycle of seasons, and many trees have their own way of preparing for the winter ahead.

Colours Right now, we’re all being treated to a display of colour that’s unmatched anywhere in the world, (well I happen to think so anyway). Deciduous trees are the “culprits” for this display, and if you don’t know what deciduous means it’s the act of releasing leaves from the tree. There are many species that develop all types of colours at this time of year, and if you’re looking for something to add to your garden that will warm the cockles of your heart when autumn arrives, try taking a look at some of the species below: • Various Acers are perfect for autumn colour. The campstre which is the only native Maple tree we have in the UK will treat you to stunning gold colours when it’s ready to shed its leaves. Another favourite is the osakazuki which (as the name suggests) is of Japanese origin. This type of Acer will turn shades of red and orange tints. • The native hornbeam is perfect if you want a natural hedge, and it’s very adaptable. If you want to add some buttery yellow colours with a slight hint of deep orange, you won’t be disappointed with this one.

• The Euonymus Europaeus or Red Cascade certainly lives up to its name and is perfect for smaller gardens. At this time of year, the foliage turns bright red. As winter approaches it will produce an abundance of orange and red fruits as the leaves turn purple.

Why Trees Lose Their Leaves There is a very simple way to explain this, and just like humans it’s all about protection from the harsh weather in winter. You may think that because we wrap up trees losing their leaves is the wrong way to about things. However, these magnificent plants have a plan. Photosynthesis is important for any tree, and this is done through the leaves. In spring and summer there is an abundance of light which is what helps leaves stay green and produce much needed nutrients for the tree. When winter approaches leaves become more of a hindrance than a help, and that’s why deciduous trees shed their leaves. It gives the plant one less thing to worry about in terms of “feeding”. Precious nutrients and moisture

People like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust

are needed for the branches and trunk of a tree to help get it through the winter, and leaves do little to help this process. Think about how a bear will stock up on fat reserves just before the cold months start to arrive. Once he’s managed to build-up enough, he can sleep the rest of winter away. Trees that lose their leaves are essentially doing the same thing – going to sleep, but not before they treat us to a display of beautiful colour!

BUSINESS An old man went to the Doctor complaining that his wife could barely hear. The Doctor suggested a test to find out the extent of the problem. “Stand far behind her and ask her a question, and then slowly move up and see how far away you are when she first responds.” The old man excited to finally be working on a solution for the problem, runs home and sees his wife preparing supper. ” Honey” the man asks standing around 20 feet away “whats for supper?” After receiving no response he tried it again 15 feet away, and again no response. Then again at 10 feet away and again no response. Finally he was 5 feet away “honey whats for supper?” She replies “For the fourth time it’s lasagna!”
