Our longevity is due, in large part, to the loyalty and success of our customers. "My advert in Village Link Magazine has been a great success. In the early days, it helped get my business established, increased my reputation etc. I will forever be grateful".
Ten advertisers who have been with us for the past ten years, were presented (from a 1m distance) with a bottle of champagne. They told us why they are happy to stay part of the link!
Kris Stainton KS ELECTRICAL
"Print still works for our advertising especially in a premium product like Village Link. The quality of print & distribution is always first class. The fact we have suppliers ready with artwork for print, shows that they want their message to "hang around" and not just heard or swiped away. We look forward to working together with Village Link for the next 10 years".
"My continued support of the Village Link is down to the threat of violence should I cease my advert and because it brings me a regular flow of good quality work, from customers who appreciate a good job and remain loyal to that. They trust the Village Link as a good source of reliable traders and local info". Howard Fisher HANDY HOWARD
PJ Tyson PETER TYSON
"We’ve advertised in Village Link for ten years and have built many long lasting customer relationships from our little advert. Very happy with the value and service provided".
"I had such a quick response to my first advert that I became a regular advertiser. The owners are local Carlisle people who are happy to quickly nip and see you if necessary. The magazine is a true local success story". Andrew Edgar ORCHARD GROUNDS MAINTENANCE
Alex Teasdale AGT PLumbing & heating
"We have monitored the results of advertising over time, worked out what works and what does not. The fact that we have been using Village Link constantly for advertising over the last ten years speaks for itself. From our own experience, the magazine is well read by thousands of people, and the results of our advertising have been outstanding. We wish them all the best on their milestone anniversary and look forward to the next ten years". Michael McFarlane conservclean uk ltd
"Village Link is great value for money as potential customers read and keep it. Adverts don't get lost in a sea of words like in many other forms of printed adverts. Thank you!" Simon Richardson KEYISHOES
“This magazine has helped me meet some great people along the way. Advertising costs are very reasonable. I look forward to another ten years working with Andrew & Michaela". Mike Welton M D WELTON
"Village Link is a local business like ourselves, catering specifically for the local community. It is a form of advertising that is friendly and effective. We have advertised so long because we know from customer interaction that they enjoy reading the magazine".
"Everyone at BPK Estate Agents loves this compact, high quality magazine - what an asset to our local community. I’m really glad we chose to work with you since the start of your journey–here’s to another 10 years!"

s you may have guessed by the cover, we are celebrating our 10th Anniversary! Whilst this is our 60th issue of Village Link, the magazine was established before our ownership, making the Village Link one of the longest running magazines in Carlisle. We believe actions speak louder than words, and to steal a line from Mick McFarlane's testimonial, the fact that advertisers have constantly used Village Link for the past ten years, speaks for itself. We work hard to promote a sense of community among local customers, and in this way, ads are not just ads, they are recommendations from a personalised, trusted source. So we want to say a huge thank you to our advertisers for choosing our magazine to help build their business and to you, our dear readers, for using their services. Life continues to be challenging and uncertain. I still look both ways before I cross the street – fully expecting to get hit by a plane. Still, never in a million years did I think I could go to the bank, wearing a mask and ask for money. Congratulations to Theo who found all the hidden Winston's in the last issue, to Gabriel for finding Bear and Marilyn Andrew Corrie who won a copy of The NHS - The Story So Far Book! Keep Safe everyone. EDITOR www.village-link.co.uk

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson
re you a hobby kind of person? If not, maybe think about the benefits of having a hobby, especially in the recent climate we find ourselves in. Hobbies can help to relieve stress and feelings of being overwhelmed. They can help you to relax and seek pleasures in activities that aren't associated with work, chores or other responsibilities. According to the NHS website, under 'learn new skills', it states "Research shows that learning new skills can improve your mental wellbeing by boosting self-confidence and raising self-esteem, helping you to build a sense of purpose and helping you to connect with others. Hobbies definitely have their place and can be extremely beneficial. There is one point worth mentioning though, if you don’t enjoy your hobby, you won’t do it, which defeats the whole purpose. So make sure that anything you choose to do in your free time is something you’ll enjoy. It doesn’t have to be anything too elaborate, it can be something as simple as reading a book or doing a jigsaw. Or, why not play a board game.
There are thousands of board games out there on just about every theme imaginable, so don’t just think Monopoly which is my personal bugbear! How about getting crafty, be it knitting, sewing, painting, scrapbooking or woodworking. These are all very productive hobbies and allow you to be creative in so many ways. One final suggestion, especially in light of my column, how about good old cooking. Cooking is one of the most productive hobbies out there and forces you to be in the moment, focusing entirely on the product and processes at hand. It also forces you to plan ahead. So why not give it a go. Start with something simple and then progress from there. Here is a very simple recipe
using sausages. Sausages are so versatile because you can eat them whole, make them into mince, or you can make meatballs out of them which is something I often do. Sausage Stroganoff Tagliatelle Melt 20g butter in a frying pan until foaming. Squeeze out chunks of sausage meat from 6 pork sausage skins and cook for 7 to 8 minutes or until golden brown. Then add 350g sliced mushrooms to the pan and cook for a further 5 minutes. Stir through 1tsp sweet smoked paprika for 1 minute, then stir in 300ml soured cream, ½ tbsp wholegrain mustard and 150ml beef stock and bring to a simmer. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Meanwhile, cook 400g dried tagliatelle in a large pan of boiling salted water according to the pack instructions, then add to the sauce with 2tbsp chopped parsley. Serve in deep bowls with a sprinkle of parsley on top. This will serve 4 people. Not only will you enjoy this, but your loved ones will enjoy it too, bringing you even greater satisfaction. t 69 years of age, on the 24th May 1948, Agnes Arber became the first woman to be awarded with the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London, a world-famous institution dedicated to the study of natural history, recognising her outstanding contributions to botanical science. The Linnean Gold Medal is the highest honour and only awarded in recognition for ‘outstanding’ service to the Society. Agnes published numerous books on botany and philosophy, too. Signature Brands has created the Agnes Arber gins, in recognition and admiration of the first lady of botany. Agnes Arber Premium Gin is pot-stilled at the distillery from nine botanicals, plus premium grain spirit. The botanicals utilised are Angelica, Cassia, Coriander, Grapefruit, Iris, Juniper, Lemon, Liquorice and Orange. I consider this to be a perfect balance and (if it possible) even more perfect by adding a slice of pink grapefruit to the finished drink. Following on, from the original concept, a further production was created, to include another flavour
and more colour, to an already winning formula. The gin was infused with rhubarb, adding a luscious tartness. Agnes Arber Rhubarb Premium Gin pairs extremely well with Ginger Ale, plus garnishing with a slice of orange, if so desired. The productions are very well presented and are fabulous for cabinet displays, likely taking ‘Pride of Place’, in any collection. Great gins on their own or adding tonic (if such is a preference), these will not disappoint, with a softness on the mouthfeel, which follows through to the memorable palate sensation, superbly. Other high-quality productions, from Signature Brands, are very much worthwhile locating and trying, too. Spirits, including Old J Spiced Rum and Moonshine Vodka are very popular. Having a splendid range of drinks, with great presentations, take time and pleasure to locate your favourites, from this well-established company. www.signature-brands.co.uk As always, Enjoy! ell, by February, I really thought I would be writing about how my travel business is booming, and I can’t cope with all the enquiries that I’m getting. Think again! Recently we’ve been hearing from Grant Shapps that you shouldn’t book a holiday, despite Matt Hancock announcing that he was looking forward to his own holiday that he had just booked. We all know that until the current lockdown is lifted we aren’t going anywhere for holidays anytime soon, but there’s nothing to stop you from booking a holiday, except perhaps your own confidence. You’ll feel so much better once you’ve actually booked a holiday and you’ve got something to look forward to, even though it might be in this country. I suspect that by Easter we may be able to enjoy a self catering holiday. That in itself comes in all kinds of guises – pods, cottages, lodges, glamping tents, tree houses, railway carriages, even a double decker bus. There are accommodations to suit all budgets. If you haven’t been anywhere for ages, why

Time to review your will?
T
the FOURTH in a series of bite size articles brought to you by the tax specialists at Saint & Co.
op of the to do list for many individuals is to make or update their will. Many think this is something to leave until later in life but it is important to get things in place once property is acquired or when children come along. In the absence of a Will there are statutory rules which dictate how your assets are distributed on death. Those statutory intestacy rules may not be tax efficient and you might want to make specific provision in your Will for your unmarried partner or for the guardianship of your children.
PASSING ON THE FAMILY HOME
One recent change that should be taken into consideration when drafting your Will is the additional Inheritance Tax (IHT) nil rate band for passing on the family home to direct
descendants on death. We can work with your solicitor to make sure your Will is tax efficient. Now that the additional relief is fully phased in it provides an extra £175,000 on top of to the normal £325,000 nil rate band. Where the allowance is unused on the death of the first spouse, the unused allowance is available on the death of the surviving spouse, possibly even if the first spouse died before this relief was introduced. Potentially this will allow a married couple (or civil partners) to pass on assets of up to £1 million without paying IHT. This additional relief is, however, restricted if your assets exceed £2 million. The rules are fairly complicated but we can review your personal circumstances to ensure that you
take advantage of all the relief that you are entitled to. This relief is even available when you downsize to a smaller property. For example, if a married couple currently live in a large house worth £500,000 downsize to a flat worth £300,000, they could give away some of the proceeds during their lifetime and yet still benefit from inheritance tax relief based on the higher valued property. They could even sell up completely and move into a rental property or a care home and still get the inheritance tax relief! We have a team of tax specialists on hand to help you digest the complicated rules, and get the best from your situation. Speak to Pauline Jackson or Alex Dent, our inheritance tax specialists who are members of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, to ensure the best advice for your circumstances.

GARDEN
Biosecurity in the UK
I
Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort
t might seem strange to mention Brexit and biosecurity in the same breath; and you might wonder what either of them have got to do with gardening. However I thought that as my gardening readership is a responsible group who understand the vital role that horticulture has for our fragile environment it may be a good time to write on the subject. The starting point for my article is a simple statistic: according to the RHS since 1999 the import of live plants into the UK has increased 71 per cent, and the value of such imports last year was a staggering £1.06 billion. The range of plants that we can now buy from garden centres is wonderful, and both myself and my clients benefit from this trade. Of course the more plants we import in theory at least, comes the risk of importing unwanted pests and diseases. I read recently that there are now over a thousand pests and diseases on what is known as the UK plant health register - that is a sobering thought! Brexit has brought about new challenges in relation to plant health. No longer can you go on holiday and bring back plants and seeds from another country. Before the 1st of January this year it was possible to bring into the
Opportunities I think to strengthen our control over the plants that enter our country and with it improve the 'biosecurity' of the UK. The issue is certainly being taken seriously by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). As long ago as 2014 it published 'Protecting Plant Health: A Plant Biosecurity Strategy for Great Britain' country any plant that In essence it outlines just how originated in the EU. Some organisations such as the With the UK now outside the RHS feel the situation demands European Union new procedures that certain plant groups that are apply and the documentation has susceptible to dangerous notifiable changed. Now a phytosanitary certificate is required for virtually diseases such as Xylella fastidiosa any plant or seed we would like to should not be allowed to be exhibbring into the UK even for person- ited at RHS Shows. The RHS in essence assurance that the plant or plant material was safe – free from what promotes the use of UK grown and are known as quarantine pests oth- sourced plants/materials. RECORDMAN TOMMY JAMES & THE SHONDELLS
B
etween 1966 and 1973, Tommy James issued thirteen albums on Roulette either as a solo performer or with The Shondells and this 6xCD package collects together everything from that era. The group exploded on to the charts in America with Hanky Panky in 1964. We, in Britain, bought just enough copies when it was eventually released here in 1966 to make number 38 on our charts, but had the group continued in that raw, sparse, almost novelty style, that might have been the last we heard of them, but the following year Tommy James & The Shondells adopted a 'pop / bubblegum' style which despite having an ultra-commercial sound failed to click with British record buyers until Mony Mony arrived in 1968 and soared to the top spot. Between Hanky Panky and Mony Mony, we ignored I Think We're Alone Now (Tiffany would have a hit with that song in 1988) and Out Of The Blue, two among many of the groups's releases that deserved more recognition. Perhaps, before British record buyers could really catch up with their 'pop' output, the group chose a different path for their
music; they quickly adopted 'psychedelia' with songs like Crimson And Clover which gave the group another American number one. Continuing to ring the changes, the group's next hits were the smoother Sweet Cherry Wine and Crystal Blue Persuasion before James went to Nashville to record a countryrock album – and that's the 'problem' with the group; they were chameleons, they changed their sound as often as we change our socks. Of course, all that means there's much to enjoy in this release which, for the first time, chronicles the entire 141 tracks the group recorded for Roulette Records and with a superbly detailed booklet accompanying the CDs, this is a highly recommended education as well as entertainment. Celebration - The Complete Roulette Records Grapefruit Records QCRSEGBOX085 Austin Powell has spent his entire working life in the music business. From being an agent and manager of ‘beat groups’ in the sixties to working for major record companies in the seventies and eighties, he has also held management positions at radio stations in England, Wales and on the Isle Of Man. He continues to act as a consultant to several record companies and artists.

Lakeland Adventures FELLWALKING ENTHUSIAST STEPHEN ROBSON REFLECTS ON A LABOUR OF LOVE WHICH TOOK FORTY YEARS TO ACHIEVE – COMPLETING ALL 214 WAINWRIGHT FELLS
A
s any of you know who regularly read the Lakeland Adventures page, I usually write about the upland areas, the fells. They have always been my motivation to travel to the district, indeed wherever I go in the world if I see an inclined slope, a craggy outcrop, any kind of hill that offers a different perspective on the landscape, I feel a compulsion to climb it. Last year in the face of the pandemic, it was generally accepted that the high mountains with their inherent “dangers” were out of bounds, perambulation on them and subsequent mishaps might compromise key workers who are also mountain rescue volunteers. We opted instead to walk around two of the lakes. Totally flat walks. One day, way in the future, this might be standard fare, of course! ...But not quite yet... Setting off around Derwentwater, in a clockwise direction, from the vicinity of the old railway station, we walked past the landing stages to the lookout post of Friars Crag. The lake is three miles long, one mile across (making it
The lake is three miles long, one mile across (making it the widest of the lakes in the Lake District) with a maximum depth of 72 feet the widest of the lakes in the Lake District) with a maximum depth of 72 feet. Its shore length is just under ten miles. Just beyond the impressive Lodore Falls Hotel, the path takes you across to the opposite shore, returning beneath the High Spy, Maiden Moor, and Catbells ridge, through largely wooded areas to the head of the lake. One rather lovely moment was when we spotted a red deer just ahead on the path. The lake vanishes at the end of the walk. One thing to add is that I fell over a stone that day - whilst composing a photograph - and gashed my head. Wainwright’s advice to “watch where you are putting your feet” holds true wherever you are! Mike always carries a first aid kit and soon patched me up. A very useful thing to have in the rucksack. The next circuit took place in early winter, the walk was taken in the beautiful valley of Buttermere. There are no towns or villages here so the feeling is even more serene and far from the madding crowd. There is something about walking beside
We are committed to successfully promoting your business or venture
water that soothes the soul, unless it’s beside a turbulent ocean, of course! This time the setting off point was beside the Fish Hotel, again taking a clockwise route. The lake is just over one mile long, a third of a mile wide and 75 feet deep. Once through the farmyard, the lake beckons you through the trees, its shimmering waters backed by the mighty High Stile range, with the knobbly summit of Haystacks and the knife- edge ridge to Fleetwith Pike at the top of the valley, just before the ascent to Honister Pass begins. One of the most interesting features of the walk involvesducking (if you are tall, like me) through a man - made tunnel on the Eastern shore, which was excavated by a local land owner to keep his workforce busy in winter. The return through Burtness wood has beautiful views across the water to Newlands Pass, The sun broke through the clouds and lit the landscape in warm colours I spotted a nesting box filled with nuts, where many years ago my wife and I had watched, delighted, as a red squirrel and a robin competed for attention, the squirrel popping in and out of the box, whilst the robin chirped excitedly on a nearby branch. Today only a robin was there, hopping along a nearby wall. Two lovely walks, proving you don’t have to climb a mountain to have a good day out.

ECOLOGY & WILDLIFE LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AND TIPS ON CARING FOR TREES AND SHRUBS
I
n recent years there has been a dramatic change in the way we look at relationships between fungi and trees. In particular, the hollowing of ancient trees by fungal decay, previously seen as detrimental, is now recognised as a natural part of the ageing process, which can even prolong the lives of trees. Fungi are also essential to much of the wider wildlife values of trees. We only perceive the tree itself but if the cellulose and lignin could be stripped away, we might still be able to see the whole tree in ghostly fungal relief. It has been said that every tree provides a unique and dynamic support system for fungi, since almost the whole of every tree is associated with fungi. Certain kinds of fungi, which spread through woodlands below ground – can be extremely
large – a honey fungus in the USA has been estimated as occupying an area over 3.5 km in diameter and weighing as much as 650 tons. With an estimated age between 1,900 and 8,650 years, this individual is an example of the great age that such fungi can reach, owing to their continuous growth habit. In principle, this could enable them to live for ever, so that death for them is perhaps accidental rather than inevitable. What do fungi do in ecosystems? Fungi interact with plants and animals in a myriad of ways, which are essential for the functioning of ecosystems throughout the planet. For example, they keep trees supplied with many of the chemical elements that are essential for survival and growth. Do all decay fungi do the same sort of thing?

Most wood decay fungi can grow only in wood that is already dead, either in the form of dead branches and fallen trees or in the inner wood (heartwood or ripewood) of living trees, which is no longer needed for waterconduction. There are, however, some that can grow in the living sapwood of trees, by tolerating a lack of oxygen and by overcoming or bypassing the tree’s active defences. Such decay fungi could be regarded as pathogens (‘disease causers’) but their decay is often so restricted that the tree can remain healthy. What else do fungi do? There are many other fungi that do not belong to either of the two above ecological groups but that are associated with trees, occurring anywhere from the leaves in the crown down to the root hairs. Some of these fungi, known as endophytes (‘in the plant’) live between the living cells of the tree, while others live inside hollow, dead cells. Others, called epiphytes (‘on the plant’) live on the surfaces of leaves, or bark etc. Yet others live partly inside plant cells and are called biotrophic (‘life-feeding’), as in the case of some kinds of mycorrhizal fungi. Certain fungi, such as rusts and mildews, can clearly be classed as pathogens and they have conventionally been regarded as ‘bad’. They are, however, increasingly being recognised as an important influence on the composition and structure of woodland communities, for example in glade creation. Disease is thus a normal process in natural systems but it can become problematic elsewhere, for example in commercial forestry, in ornamental plantings or where human activities bring together plants and fungi that have not co-evolved. 29
